“Human influence on sea level is a fairly recent phenomenon,” writes science historian Wilko Graf von Hardenberg in his slim
extensively-researched new book Sea Level: A History
“But the means we use to assess the effects of anthropogenic climate change are
and scientific agendas that were radically different from the current ones.”
These are the three concentrations of von Hardenberg’s book: the history of how sea level was first conceived and established
the way it’s been spread and established as the bedrock
and of course its uncertain future in the face of tides rising as result of climate change.
The book’s historical thread naturally opens it up to the kind of anti-factual nonsense that infects even scientific writing in the popular market
“Mean sea level – like other height reference points – does not exist independently of cultural techniques for the appreciation of verticality
and its changes do not exist independently of the methods used to assess rates of change over time,” he writes at one point
but almost before the reader can start wincing from that “appreciation of verticality,” the line is almost entirely rescued: “But once created within a specific social and cultural setting as a tool to make the world more legible
sea level becomes quintessential in shaping the environment as we know it
In the various historical iterations of what sea level is
“politics often proved more important than the accuracy of measurement.” And only shortly after those political complications began to sweep out of the purely scientific aspect of the concept
von Hardenberg’s most pertinent concern sweeps in: climate-driven rises in sea level around the world
His End Notes for the book (fairly heavy ballast
since the book itself is just a bit north of 100 pages) are a wealth of follow-ups on contemporary data about the crisis unfolding.
naturally rated as one of the most vulnerable major coastal cities in the world with its vast skylines sitting directly on the water like it was a tabletop
citywide processes or even with the steps taken by one’s neighbors,” he writes
unconcerned with the preservation of a functional urban infrastructure
face pressure from developers seeking to remove them from the high ground to which they were forced during the city’s earlier waterfront boom
or find their own homes and savings threatened due to sea-level rise.”
Sea Level is a delightfully compacted study
refreshingly free of the kind of doomsaying that usually accompanies this subject
And the sotto voce warning about hobbling science with the politics of the moment is unfortunately pointed.

It is unclear whether anything was done about these alarming signals
The 53-year-old woman and her 56-year-old partner lived in the Drenthe village of Schoonebeek
They’d been together for decades and had four children
It was an open secret in the village that things were not going well
The man could not accept that the relationship had ended
he waited for his ex at her job at the childcare center De Kameleon in Hardenberg
He stabbed her as she tried to get into her car
Many children and their parents witnessed the violence
The man then stabbed himself in the stomach
He too was taken to hospital and the police arrested him there
Chairman Jos van Hees of Dorpsbelangen Schoonebeek told RTV Drenthe that the village council had been aware of the situation in the family for some time
but we passed the signal on to the mayor during a visit in July.” According to Van Hees
the mayor said that he was already aware of the situation
Van Hees doesn’t know if anything was done
confirmed to RTV Drenthe that the police knew about the family
He also did not say whether the family received any support
“The police are currently investigating the circumstances and the municipality will also be involved in this,” he said
This is the second tragedy to hit Emmen this year. Early this year, a man from Weiteveen shot a married couple dead after a long ongoing argument about the condition of the house they bought from him. The case received extensive publicity because the man live-streamed a confession shortly after the double murder.

Ian Beveridge to hand over executive management of Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement to Sebastian von Hardenberg with effect from January 2025
HAMBURG-headquartered Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement has confirmed that Ian Beveridge will hand over executive management of the company to former chief financial officer Sebastian von Hardenberg
Effective from January 1 2025, BSM said that Beveridge will remain chief executive of parent company The Schulte Group
He will continue to support BSM as chairman of the company’s board
“As the long-standing chief financial officer of BSM and current vice-president of InterManager
Sebastian knows the company and the industry exceptionally well and has built a proven track record in various positions within the Schulte Group,” said Beveridge
Von Hardenberg has been with Schulte Group since 2005 and from 2006 to 2009 he served as head of controlling at Bernhard Schulte
the ship owning division of the Schulte Group
prior to taking up the role of financial director at BSM Germany
Following several roles at BSM’s overseas offices in Hong Kong
Von Hardenberg was appointed chief financial officer of BSM in 2015
BSM manages a fleet of some 670 ships and employs 25,000 seafarers and 2,000 personnel ashore

senior government official and businessman
it came as a surprise when he was selected to play one of the leading roles in a successful TV series
one of the most popular Danish TV series in history
His role was to introduce them to the country
“I was very surprised when they suggested that I apply for a role – I have never acted before,” Mr
In Borgen Hardenberg plays the role of Hans Eliassen
the Greenlandic minister of Foreign Affairs and natural resources
Hardenberg has first-hand experience of Greenlandic politics since he has served as the politically appointed chief of staff of Prime Minister Ms
in addition to his career in business and administration
helped the writers of Borgen with the political context and overcoming clichés about Greenlanders
“They had written quite a lot but from Denmark
We introduced them to the real issues between Greenland and Denmark
they rewrote several of the characters.”
Novelist Niviaq Korneliussen also contributed to translating dialogues into Greenlandic
Hardenberg says he is happy with the outcome and convinced that the time the authors spent in Greenland helped them to “really understands the systems
Research just based on what kind of articles that are in the press
We wanted to introduce them to the real Greenland“
In the programme the main character Birgitte Nyborg
has to deal simultaneously with geopolitical and domestic political crises
which touch upon USA-Chinese-Russian relations
Borgen became a smash hit when it premiered on DR
known for such civilised and peaceful consensus politics that the opposition usually votes for the government´s budget proposal
BBC has called Borgen “the greatest political drama ever,” but over 4 seasons the stories and the characters have developed
The New York Times said that the new season of Borgen is darker than previous seasons less “West Wing” and more “House of Cards.”
The plot in the 4th season revolves around the theme of drilling for oil in Greenlandic waters
For the time being Greenland relies on financial contributions from Denmark
the equivalent of about 20 per cent of Greenlandic gross domestic product
While the Greenlandic government’s full control over the country’s natural resources was recognized in 2009
a roadmap was also established on the modalities of possible independence – once Greenland would be able to stand on its own feet without financial handouts from Copenhagen
Mr. Hardenberg does not hide his pro-independence politics
“Denmark has no interest in developing Greenland because that moves it closer to independence.”
the fact that the discovery of oil could finance Greenlandic independence and benefit Denmark is weighed against the implications for the climate crisis
the minister of raw material and energy in the Greenlandic self-government says the storyline is quite accurate
These are the issues that we have and the power struggles between Greenland and Denmark
One of the Greenlandic characters in Borgen says that it is not reasonable that Greenland should be held accountable for 200 centuries of CO2 emissions by industrialised countries
It is not reasonable to put a break on our development because the development of other countries has damaged the environment and the climate
This opinion is well represented in Borgen,” says Svend Hardenberg
The current Inuit population of Greenland migrated to the island from Canada around AD 1200
They shared the island with Nordic settlers
mostly from Iceland and Norway for centuries
the Europeans disappeared mysteriously around 1450 but in 1721 the United Kingdom of Denmark and Norway reclaimed Greenland
Christian missionaries fought Inuit customs
In recent years there has been a considerable revival of ancient customs- for instance
Since the nationalist movement in Greenland rose to prominence in the sixties and seventies
relations have been established with other Inuits in Canada
Greenlanders are also active members of the UN Permanent Forum for the World´s Indigenous People
the recent revelation of the death and burials of indigenous children in Canada
has not gained much attention in Greenland
but one explanation might be that similar local stories have dominated the media
As recently as March this year, Denmark had to pay compensation and apologize to Greenlandic Inuits who were taken from their families in the fifties. It was part of an experiment to build a Danish-speaking elite in the fifties. Today, most Greenlanders speak a Western-Greenlandic dialect
dozens of women have come forward and told the story of forced contraception in the fifties
Thousands of young girls were forced to have a coil
without their or their parent’s knowledge
Some of the women only found out much later when they were examined by gynaecologists
but Danish state TV has reported that 4,500 were subjected to the procedure
Danish authorities aimed to tackle the number of children born out of wedlock in Greenland since they were considered a burden on taxpayers
Hardenberg and many Greenlanders see it as a deliberate attack to keep the number of Greenlanders down and ensure Danish dominance of Greenland
The current population of Greenland is roughly 57,000
it was only 32,000 in 1960 and has since grown by over 70%
“Living conditions were improving and the population was growing,” says Hardenberg
“But they decided on their own that it had to be managed because they didn’t want more cost of running Greenland
even though we were a natural part of Denmark
This topic surfaced only recently because many of the girls were ashamed
It appears that 46 % of all women in the childbearing population have experienced this
The International Day of the Worlds´Indigenous People is celebrated annually on 9 August
This year the focus is on the role of indigenous women in the preservation and transmission of traditional knowledge
The shipmanagement company has promoted its chief financial officer to the top executive position
Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has promoted chief financial officer Sebastian von Hardenberg to become chief executive
taking over from Ian Beveridge on 1 January 2025
Mr von Hardenberg is a long-standing employee of Schulte Group and BSM
he served as head of control at Bernhard Schulte
before assuming the role of financial director at BSM Germany
Following several career milestones in Hong Kong
where he held positions including executive assistant to the chief executive and director of business risk
he was appointed chief financial officer of BSM in 2015
His promotion to chief executive comes as the global shipping industry is facing huge challenges
“The shipping industry is undergoing fundamental change
and the shortage of skilled workers are having a lasting impact on the market,” said Mr von Hardenberg
“I look forward to driving BSM’s strategy forward during a time where transition and constant change are essential.”
Mr Beveridge will remain chief executive of the Schulte Group and will continue as chairman of the BSM board
The former Greenlandic politician Svend Hardenberg plays the Greenlandic Minister of Foreign Affairs and Natural Resources in the Danish Netflix series Borgen - the kingdom
Greenlandic politician turned TV Star – Svend Hardenberg (53) – was initially hired by Netflix to show the Borgen production team Greenland's culture
"We showed them the real issues between Greenland and Denmark
resulting in parts of the script being rewritten," Hardenberg explains
When the Danish Netflix series Borgen decided to shoot its fourth season in Greenland after a nearly ten-year-long hiatus
the producers realized how little they knew about the world’s largest island
Greenlandic politician now turned TV Star – Svend Hardenberg (53) – was initially hired by Netflix to give the production team a crash course in Greenland culture
and politics and to provide real facts about Greenland
“We learned a lot about how little we knew,” says Borgen director Per Fly
The season - which aired on Netflix in June - focuses on a geopolitical crisis brewing in Greenland. Netflix has said that they wanted to revive the series and place it into the present by putting current international agendas at stake
The season was described as a game of power
where relations with Greenland are put to the test
and both the USA and China become key players when an oil discovery in North Greenland disturbs the relationship between Greenland and Denmark and the geopolitical balance
as the discovery of oil could either finance Greenlandic independence or benefit Denmark
oil is found in Greenland and starts a fight between different political interests
Birgitte Nyborg is the Danish Foreign Minister who wants to shut it down
The Greenlandic Foreign Minister (Svend Hardenberg) has other ideas about the discovery
The plot also circles around the implications this could have for the climate crisis as well as a country and a people still very much in the process of decolonization
Along with Hardenberg and the Danish Ambassador to the Arctic
Fly talked about how art mirrors life from the stage at the Arctic Circle Assembly last weekend
and I was offered the part as Greenlandic Minister of Foreign Affairs and Natural Resources
who is a real-life politician in Greenland and had never acted before
For both the Netflix production team and the fresh actor
Hardenberg's original character was meant to be more of a romantic
But Fly quickly realized that this is not the nature of politicians on the Arctic Island at all
"I made it clear that the Greenlandic people had to recognize their land in the series
There are real issues between Denmark and Greenland and I wanted to put pressure on Denmark in this story," says Per Fly
who spent a lot of time talking with Hardenberg and the Greenlandic people
but Hardenberg has first-hand knowledge from the political world as he has been a politician
He also comes from a family of politicians
“People respected the portrayal of Greenland as the new
modern country it is today," says Fly
Real-life Arctic Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark Thomas Winkler
confirms that the series is a realistic take on the current geopolitical situation
“Although real life is not as dramatic as on TV,” says Winkler with a laugh
Svend Hardenberg (53) from Greenland has been a politician
senior government official and businessowner
From the Arctic Circle stage he discussed the Borgen plotine with the Danish Ambassador to the Arctic
The richness of the region is more accessible and is moving forward,” says the Ambassador
Greenland is absolutely on the world's geopolitical game board
and director Per Fly says he is grateful that he had access to the Greenlandic politicians along the way
Greenland has decided to completely stop further oil and gas exploration to make the country more sustainable
The Greenlandic government also stopped the exploration of uranium in Kuannersuit in South Greenland
But these resources are the reason powerful nation-states like the United States and China have a special interest in Greenland
Greenland is also a hotspot for climate change and during his Arctic Circle speech
Egede made it clear that no drilling of oil will take place on his watch
Hardenberg says he is happy with the result and convinced that the time the authors spent in Greenland helped them to fully understand the issues
"You can only research up to a certain point from afar."
reviews in the Greenlandic press have been mixed
“It quickly becomes a caricatured depiction of a beautiful land with noble people who are submissive,” wrote Member of the Folketing and Inuit Ataqatigiit, Aaja Chemnitz Larsen in Sermitsiaq

The 2024 edition of the SAGA Festival, held in Bucharest, faced significant backlash due to numerous issues, including artist cancellations and logistical failures. In an interview with HotNews.ro
Allan Hardenberg (photo) and Thomas Vandewalle
addressed the accusations and outlined their perspective on the events that transpired
and Business Review contacted them for further clarifications
the organizers revealed that her cancellation came as a surprise just hours before her performance
citing security concerns over a planned protest in Bucharest
Despite reassurances from local authorities about the safety and insignificance of the protest
Hardenberg mentioned that they were investigating the matter and consulting with lawyers
as all contractual obligations were fulfilled from their end
The festival also faced severe criticism for the lack of promised amenities
Hardenberg and Vandewalle responded by stating that there was a misunderstanding regarding the water points
which were intended for handwashing rather than drinking
They claimed that these facilities were provided inside a dedicated hangar but might not have been easily located by attendees
On the issue of payment with wristbands, Vandewalle acknowledged the challenges but explained that the system was designed for drink purchases, while food could be bought using cash or cards. He admitted that despite clear instructions at refill booths, the communication might not have been effective enough to avoid confusion.
Hardenberg mentioned that while they had faced similar issues in the past
efforts were made to improve facilities based on previous feedback
the unpredictable nature of artist cancellations remained a significant hurdle
He noted that the festival had grown substantially since its inception
which came with growing pains that they were continuously addressing
Looking ahead, the organizers are committed to holding the SAGA Festival in 2025, which will mark its fifth anniversary. Hardenberg emphasized their long-term dedication to Bucharest and hinted at lessons learned, particularly regarding the booking of certain genres of artists. Despite the setbacks, they remain optimistic and determined to make future editions successful and problem-free.

HILLSDALE — A Coldwater man charged with delivery of methamphetamine and felony firearm pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine
Monday afternoon in Hillsdale County Circuit Court
entered into the plea bargain arranged with the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office who agreed to dismiss the two original charges in exchange for his guilty plea
Hardenberg was arrested in July by the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office when corrections officers discovered methamphetamine concealed in a sports bra that Hardenberg was attempting to bring to 30-year-old Kristine Marie Fiorini of Reading
Fiorini was incarcerated at the time on unrelated charges
When the corrections officers discovered the narcotics they alerted command staff who had Hardenberg arrested by members of the Hillsdale Narcotics Enforcement Team
During Hardenberg’s interrogation by HNET deputies
Hardenberg admitted to having a .45 pistol and a .22 pistol in his vehicle located in the jail’s parking lot
Hardenberg initially denied knowing the methamphetamine was concealed within the sports bra
but similar packaging material used to package the methamphetamine was discovered in his vehicle
The Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office also relied on a taped phone call between Hardenberg and Fiorini which arranged the delivery as evidence against Hardenberg to secure the conviction
Hardenberg has been out on bond awaiting a scheduled jury trial in the matter and will appear for sentencing at 8:30 a.m

Since the creation of Mobius Capital Partners in 2018
the landscape of emerging markets has undergone a significant transformation
An evolution that the investment firm itself has also experienced
after announcing the departure of Mark Mobius
takes a further step without losing its essence
founding partner of the firm and co-manager
discussed both matters in his latest interview
Could you give an assessment of the legacy he leaves at the firm
I have collaborated with Mark for nearly 25 years
and his expertise in emerging markets (EM) is invaluable
Often regarded as a pioneer in the asset class
Mark’s foresight has played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of our firm
his global network and great insights have been instrumental in MCP's success
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mark for his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind
Mobius’ departure further strengthens your leadership
what plans do you have for the fund manager’s business
we see an opportunity to position the company for the future
My plan includes the promotion of select employees to partner roles
This is a reflection of their contributions and performance
aligning the team’s interests more closely with those of our investors
our focus remains on the singe strategy that
has demonstrated its potential to deliver sustainable long-term returns in emerging markets
this strategy is accessible through two vehicles—a closed-ended London-listed trust and an open-ended SICAV fund
we are exploring the establishment of a private fund catering to the interest we’ve received from U.S
We have a strong leadership and deep bench of talented analysts
The funds will be managed by the same team as over the past years
Regarding “The Mobius Emerging Markets Funds” and “Mobius Investment Trust”
you have explained that there will be no changes
could you highlight what are the strengths of these vehicles and their attractiveness to investors
The Mobius Emerging Markets Fund has just achieved its 5-year track record with significant outperformance
returning over 25% (USD) during a period when the index (MSCI EM Index USD) was negative
active strategy investing in quality companies in emerging markets
The strategy provides access to lesser known
highly innovative EM companies with improving financial productivity
This active approach requires a much more bespoke research process and sets us apart from many of our competitors who invest in the well-known mega caps and largely track the benchmark
In Latin America we have seen that there is a certain rage for Mexico and Brazil
The type of companies we’ve identified and the opportunities we see make us particularly excited about Brazil
we are actively exploring opportunities to further enhance our exposure to the Brazilian market
quality companies guides our investment decisions
Brazil currently stands out as a compelling and promising market for us
as inflation and interest rates are coming down consumption is bound to recover
and a paradigm shift in central bank policies
the question arises: What does emerging market exposure bring to investors’ portfolios
Forward-looking investors focus on future trends rather than present conditions
the dollar weakening and the global economy poised for mean reversion
emerging markets present a compelling proposition
Anticipated outperformance of emerging market growth over developed markets
coupled with advancements in technological innovation—such as artificial intelligence
and the Internet of Things—position these markets as hotbeds for highly innovative products
the current low valuations in emerging markets add another layer of appeal
the stars seem to be aligning favourably for emerging markets
In which Latin American countries do you see value
How does the situation in China affect the outlook for these countries
China is one of its most important trading partners
so a sluggish recovery in China will obviously have an impact on the country
we should not forget that China is still forecast by the IMF to grow by 4.6% and 5.4% in 2023 and 2024 respectively
and in fact the forecast was recently upgraded
which we always hear about today as a great opportunity
We are currently very bullish on India and have been actively dedicating substantial time on the ground in the country
India has been a crucial allocation for the Mobius Emerging Markets Fund since its inception
with the Indian holdings contributing around 40% to the gross return since then
This notable contribution is primarily attributed to our meticulous stock selection
Our recent visit to India has further affirmed our bullish outlook on the region
The dynamic and exciting companies we’ve encountered during this visit reaffirm our confidence in India’s potential
we are particularly encouraged by the business-friendly and supportive policies implemented by the Indian government
We believe that diligent stock pickers can uncover compelling opportunities in the Indian market
and we remain committed to leveraging these prospects for the benefit of our investors
When it comes to thinking about emerging markets in Europe
are the geopolitical risks too heavy right now
We are not invested in Eastern Europe because of stock selection rather than macro developments
We simply find more exciting companies in other regions
What is your approach to investing in emerging markets
Our approach to investing in emerging markets is based on a set of criteria
just to name a few factors that play a role in our stock selection
we have developed a preference for smaller
under-researched and undiscovered companies in emerging markets
We find that there are often significant inefficiencies in this space
creating opportunities that align with our investment philosophy and help us find attractive investment prospects that can deliver long-term sustainable returns
what is your outlook for 2024 for emerging markets and what will be their main challenges
as we are heading into the new year challenges remain including the sluggish recovery in China
the war in the Ukraine and the shaky China-US relations
when asset classes can fall in and out of favour in a matter of weeks
it is important to cut through the noise and focus on fundamentals and the long-term potential of our quality portfolio
The strongest factor in our decision-making process is the information we get from the companies themselves
And what we have heard in our regular interactions with the management teams has strengthened our conviction and given us a positive outlook for FY24 and FY25

but it is one that Italians have been discussing of late due to a fire that occurred at the end of August
So should we see the forest first and foremost as a forest
a natural landscape that perhaps should be restored
as a preservation of the memory of the country’s history
Or should we leave it to its destiny and forget about it
In 1998, the centre-left regional government allocated 260m liras (about €130,000) for the restoration of the forest. Although the aim was to promote the forest while writing over the text with the growth of new plants, it still ignited a heated debate, which even reached the national parliament
but ultimately ended without further consequences
The region is now ruled again by a centre-left coalition
less committed to the conservation of this fossil of fascist forestry
But there is something unique about the DUX forest. This is not a monument made of concrete and bricks, but memory inscribed into the landscape. The fire provides an opportunity to reflect on the natural and cultural legacies that are embodied in landscape
whether a vast burial field remembering the fallen of the war or even a national park set up in a border region to mark the state’s control over the area
not just in the more obvious human-made memorials
The stories with which they haunt the world are the lens through which we interpret the landscape
Recreating past symbols as they are is not just conservation, but rather an action with much symbolic and political value. So we are not sure whether there is any defensible reason to replant a hideous symbol of fascist rule, especially considering that foresters themselves are starting to reconsider whether reforestation is the right answer to fires
the area selected by fascist foresters for the DUX script was a calcareous
which may not be suited to supporting woodland in the long term anyway
in a completely different historical and social setting
The idea would be to be able to superimpose
historical elements and related contextual explanations on the landscape
Nature is made up of memories as much as of rocks
We need to imagine a critical preservation of controversial memories
one which does not reproduce oppression and hierarchies but frees the hidden stories of resistance and liberation

Her novels offer a view of life the wisdom of which is belied by the physical slenderness of the texts
a fictional representation of the early life of the 18th-century poet-philosopher Novalis
the pen name of Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg
This is a shame for he was an important figure in the developing Romantic tradition and explored in his work the many-faceted dimensions of reality
The novel’s epigram is a quote from Novalis — Novels arise out of the shortcomings of history — which hints at the nowadays common failure to distinguish realism from naturalism
two conditions which sound alike but are non-identical
The latter is an attempt to delineate life as we live it
while the former attempts something far more inclusive and may explore a less quotidian view of the nature of being
The novels of Sally Rooney are naturalistic
while Fitzgerald’s are realistic; that is to say they explore intangible states that for all their impalpable quality none the less reflect authentic
The title of Fitzgerald’s novel is taken from another work of fiction
The Blue Flower — which became Heinrich von Ofterdingen and the real-life Novalis never completed
stealing the title of her hero’s story and in some sense finishing it without
finishing either the story of his life or his own fictional creation
This is an example of art reflecting quotidian life but allowing glimpses of something stranger and more impalpable: Fitzgerald transports us to the half-completed life that was Novalis’s (he died aged only 28) and his half-completed work
Her highly individual style — allusive and elusive
dryly humorous — allows the form of her fiction to reflect her own shadowy vision of her hero’s shadowy intimation of reality’s multidimensional
a stranger arrives out of the dark and poses a question both to the young man
but we assume it is one Fritz asks Karoline: “What is the meaning of the blue flower?” She cannot answer; she remains in the dark
we are all left somewhat in the dark about the meaning of the story
but for Novalis the dark was not a condition of obscurity but a highly generative state
Novalis describes how: “It is as if until now I had been dreaming
or as if sleep had carried me into another world”
By Salley Vickers
The second time the tale is told is to Sophie
the unremarkable 12-year-old with a double chin with whom
the woman whose empathy and intelligence by rights should have won his heart
But there are no “by rights” in a Fitzgerald novel
Of all contemporary novelists she best understood the antinomianism of the human heart
A funny and poignant example of one of the important strands in the book
the generative power of absence and nothingness
manifesting one of the many blanks that the book celebrates
when he comes to tell her that Sophie is his “heart’s heart” and she
the nature of desire between a man and a woman.” Stung into a kind of semi-revelation
Karoline retorts: “Not everyone can speak about what they suffer
Some are separated from the only one they love but are obliged to remain silent.”
misconstrues this by at once envisaging a fantasy lover for Karoline and capturing his non-existence in some dubious verse
So that Karoline’s “lover” becomes a double fixture — he exists in the mind of Hardenberg but also in his verse — and so becomes a genuine prop for Karoline’s pride when she has to bear the fact that the man she loves with all her heart loves not her but the very ordinary — irritating even — Sophie
the unreal has been bodied forth through Fritz’s energetic imagination and given objective form in his art
So we are left asking: what kind of reality has this figure
from Fritz’s passion for the unremarkable Sophie
It is Sophie’s very blankness out of which the extraordinary love which Hardenberg feels for her is conceived
although in human terms Karoline is clearly a better match
By Paul Kingsnorth
Before he reads Karoline the blue flower fragment
Fritzl tells her: “there is something else I have written and which I want to read you while I still have time… It will not truly exist till you have heard it.” This is another aspect of the question
If it is not quite the case that something has no real existence until we apprehend it
that our human apprehension has a seminal role in creating reality; that reality is
The significance of the blue flower evolves in the repeated renderings of the story
in the way that the image of a rose evolves in “a rose is a rose is a rose”
surreptitiously reads the story and we are told afterwards that for “some time” he had recognised the “meaning” of the blue flower
have understood its meaning had he been introduced to the tale
despite a harrowing operation undertaken without anaesthetics
will be curtailed by TB and we learn in an elliptical Afterword that the Bernhard drowns
The flower we begin to apprehend is our mortality
the fragile breath of life airing the series of turns
cul-de-sacs and twists of fate which make up the novel’s loose and beguiling narrative
Much of the texture of that narrative comes from its humour
The Bernhard complains to his elder sister about the latest addition to the Hardenberg family: “There are now two younger than myself
It will be hard for me to attract sufficient attention.” “But you love little Christoph,” said Sidonie patiently
“On the whole I hate little Christoph,” the Bernhard replies
By Aris Roussinos
The mine of wit and intelligence in this slight-seeming book is as wide and deep as the Saxon salt mines for which the young Fritz becomes the unlikely overseer
But for me its peculiar virtue lies in how
without being in the slightest bit solemn or portentous
it conveys Novalis’s intimation that in this world there is no barrier between the seen and the unseen
The question of the meaning of the blue flower is never openly answered
But when the story is told for the second time
Hardenberg suggests: “If a story begins with finding
it must end in searching.” And it’s this sense of an unfolding universe
Hardenberg reflects: “When we catch sight of certain human figures and faces
thoughts take on the meaning of laws… a view of life true to itself without self-estrangement.” In these increasingly fractured and fractious times
we need to be reminded that the world may be a larger
like the blue flower both fragile yet enduring
and so ultimately a more numinous place than our limited reason comprehends
to have “a view of life true to itself without self-estrangement”

(Correction: Chetan Sehgal will remain in Singapore and will not move to London as reported earlier.)
Hardenberg (pictured) had worked at Franklin Templeton for 16 years and overseen a strong recovery in the trust’s performance since replacing Mobius as the trust’s lead manager less than two years ago
His decision to quit stunned the investment trust’s board and its chairman Paul Manduca and saw its shares drop 2.5% as investors worried about the impact on the £2.2 billion fund’s prospects
Hardenberg will continue as a portfolio manager until the end of March at which point Chetan Sehgal
raising concerns that he will be less accessible to investors than Hardenberg who had moved from Turkey to London
Hardenberg’s promotion to the helm of the trust in July 2015 started a delicate process by which Franklin gradually extricated Mobius from an emerging markets franchise with which he had become synonymous after more than 30 years with the group
All had apparently gone smoothly until yesterday when the 81-year-old Mobius formally retired as executive chairman of the Templeton Emerging Markets Group and Franklin Templeton announced a new boss for its emerging markets equities teams
chief executive of Fullerton Fund Management in Singapore
has been hired to a new role as chief investment officer of Emerging Markets Equity reporting to Stephen Dover
Franklin Templeton’s head of equities
Sehgal will report to Sekhon raising the possibility that Hardenberg objected to the new order or left out of disappointment at not getting another promotion
Franklin Templeton declined to comment other than to say he was leaving to pursue other opportunities
A more sensational theory suggested by one shareholder in the trust was that Hardenberg had quit in order to set up a new business with Mobius (pictured)
‘It might be Mark didn’t want to go,’ said the shareholder, who pointed to the departure of Greg Konieczny, former manager of Romanian investment company Fondul Proprietatea (FPq)
as possible evidence of a regrouping by an old general and two lieutenants
‘Both came through the ranks under Mark,’ the investor said
Templeton Emerging Markets shares shed 20p to 795p as investors expressed their concern and took profits on a stock that produced a 32.5% total return last year
Hardenberg made his mark on the trust by increasing the number of positions from 56 to 92 in order to reduce stock-specific risk
he amended Mobius’ traditional value investing approach by rapidly introducing technology stocks into the portfolio for the first time
This was well timed with a surge in Asia tech stocks pushing the sector’s allocation to 31% of the portfolio by the end of last year
His impact was shown in an improvement in returns with shareholder returns over three years of 51% beating the 47.7% advance in the MSCI Emerging Markets index
it was not entirely clear if the manager had actually turned round performance or had simply benefited from a rebound in emerging markets after a three-year slump in commodities
Over the same period the trust’s net asset value underperformed its benchmark with growth of 45.4%
the improvement attracted investors with demand for the shares narrowing their discount to NAV from 14% to 9%
said the trust could be vulnerable to a de-rating and a widening of the discount
particularly if technology stocks suffered a correction
Murphy played down the prospect of a change in the way the fund is run: ‘We understand that there will be no significant change in investment approach given that Carlos and Chetan worked closely together
and they have been jointly managing a number of portfolios.’
The analyst pointed to the 90% overlap between the trust and Templeton Developing Markets
a $1.7 billion US closed-end fund run by Sehgal
