BELGIUM – President Gijsbertus van Hattem of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belgium (Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk in België – ELKB)
former Secretary of the International Lutheran Council (ILC)
“President van Hattem was a true servant of God
faithfully bringing Word and Sacrament to his congregation in Antwerp for many years,” said Rev
General Secretary of the International Lutheran Council
“But he was also a great servant to the worldwide confessional Lutheran church
serving for many years as Secretary of the ILC
May God give his family comfort in the knowledge that Gijsbertus is now in the presence of His loving Saviour
President van Hattem served as pastor of the ELKB’s Heilige Geest church in Antwerp
the Lutheran church in Belgium operated as part of a combined Evangelical Lutheran Church – Synod of France and Belgium (EEL-SFB)
van Hattem served as Vice President of the EEL-SFB from 2000-2002
the church in Belgium became recognized as an independent legal entity in that country
van Hattem became president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belgium (ELKB)
He would go on to receive degrees in Civil Engineering from the Universidade de Ponta Grossa in 1978 and in Theology from Seminário Concórdia in Porto Alegre in 1983
His first call as a pastor was in Rio do Sul from 1984-1986
during which time he also served the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (Igreja Evangélica Luterana do Brasil – IELB) as Statistician from 1985-1986
President van Hattem married Verônica Ana Kuchenbecker in 1984
and the two had six children: Mattias Willem (1989)
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belgium is a small church
with one congregation each in Antwerp and Brussels
But President van Hattem had a lasting influence on confessional Lutheranism worldwide through his work on behalf of the International Lutheran Council
President van Hattem was a fixture in the ILC
having participated in all but one ILC World Conference from 1995 to the present

He continued in that position until the 2022 World Conference in Kenya
following which he continued to serve the ILC as Assistant Secretary until his death
In the leadup to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017
President van Hattem worked with local authorities to have “Martin Luther Square” (Maarten Lutherplein) inaugurated in Antwerp
The square pays tribute to Antwerp’s Reformation history
and is situated near the location of a former Augustinian monastery which adopted Luther’s ideas early on
The monastery was subsequently razed to the ground by Catholic authorities
were burned at the stake in Brussels in 1523—the first Lutheran martyrs of the Reformation
and the broader history of Lutheranism in Belgium
are recounted in President van Hattem’s 2018 book 450 Years—Lutheran Church in Antwerp: 1566-1585 and Beyond (450 Jaar—Lutherse Kerk in Antwerpen: 1566-1585 en daarna)
President van Hattem was diagnosed with a new occurrence of cancer
Despite his health challenges over the following months
he continued to faithfully serve the church in Antwerp and participate in online meetings of the ILC’s Board of Directors
He and his wife Verônica were also able to be present for the ILC’s 2024 assembly in Wittenberg
the assembly publicly acknowledged President van Hattem for his long service to the International Lutheran Council
A funeral for President van Hattem will take place at 9:30 a.m
on December 21 at Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraa (Cathedral of Our Lady) in Antwerp

The state level charges against a Minot man for allegedly sharing child sex abuse material (CSAM) with his wife have been dismissed after he was indicted on federal charges
along with his wife Amber Lyn Hattem after an investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation accused the couple of seeking and sharing CSAM with each other on a messaging app
Dalton Hattem was charged in North Central District Court with one count of promoting or directing an obscene sexual performance by a minor
a Class A felony; and possession of certain materials prohibited
Both counts were dismissed without prejudice by Judge Todd Cresap on April 2 following a motion by Assistant Ward County State’s Attorney Logan Simons
Simons’ motion indicated Hattem had been indicted federally on other charges
Information on the federal case against Hattem is currently under seal
The CSAM case against Amber Hattem is still active
The Hattems are also charged as co-defendants in a second case for allegedly conspiring and committing gross sexual imposition against several elderly residents of a Minot care facility where Amber Hattem was employed
They are scheduled for a preliminary hearing in that case on Friday

Wrigley announced today that Amber Hattem and Dalton Hattem
have been charged in connection with a disturbing case of sexual abuse and exploitation involving vulnerable adult residents at a facility in Minot
a former Certified Nurse Assistant at Minot Health and Rehab Center
faces two counts of Gross Sexual Imposition (Class A felonies) and one count of Indecent Exposure (Class A misdemeanor)
The charges allege that between April and December 2024
Amber Hattem engaged in sexual acts with two adult patients who were either unaware of or unable to comprehend the acts due to severe cognitive impairments
Hattem is also charged with recording and transmitting a sexually explicit video of herself exposing and touching her genitals while on duty inside a patient’s room
has been charged with two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Gross Sexual Imposition (Class A felonies)
Dalton Hattem requested and encouraged Amber Hattem to perform the sexual acts against the residents
and stored the sexually explicit videos of the acts created by Amber Hattem
Attorney General Wrigley condemned the alleged conduct
emphasizing the importance of protecting vulnerable adults and holding accountable all individuals involved in such exploitation
“The charges filed against Amber and Dalton Hattem reveal deeply troubling allegations of acts committed against individuals who were under care and unable to protect themselves
These are egregious allegations of troubling violations of human dignity and trust,” Wrigley said
“The State of North Dakota is fully committed to pursuing justice for these victims
and we will continue working closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure accountability.”
Attorney General Wrigley praised the North Dakota Medicaid Fraud Control Unit
and the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) for their coordinated and diligent efforts in investigating and bringing these charges forward
“This case highlights the power of collaboration between local and state agencies in protecting our most vulnerable citizens,” Wrigley added
“I am grateful to the investigators and prosecutors whose thorough work made it possible to file charges and move this matter towards justice.”
Amber and Dalton Hattem face significant prison time and mandatory sex offender registration

A day after the photoshoot that graces the cover of this issue
we’re speaking to Hattem Mattar via video call as he drives to his family home in Egypt with his mum.In many ways it makes perfect sense
Mattar is first and foremost a family man and
he’s very hard to pin down – always on the move from one event
Mattar is in Egypt – his home country – to discuss opening a restaurant there
one of a number of projects he has in the works
It’s been 10 years since he delivered his first deli meats order from Mattar Farm (a business he’s no longer involved in) and a lot has happened in that time
the dad of two was going through a divorce and he turned to food to recreate the love and affection he felt as a child
knowing that his mum’s cooking always brought people together
putting a smile on the faces of others brought him some joy
“I started barbecuing at probably the saddest time of my life,” he says
I wasn’t going out of my way to be in public
but by making food and barbecuing I got one of three things; money
I couldn’t go out there and tell my friends I wasn’t feeling so good and get a hug from them
At that time it just wasn’t the kind of relationship I had with them
so instead I got it from strangers in return for a sandwich
“They had no idea what I was getting in return
Mattar has reached his childhood home in Alexandria and
the topic switches to his time growing up in Egypt
and no-one has ever seen inside here before
There were times we’d have my mum and my dad’s families in here
all sleeping in a three bedroom house,” he gushes
“That hospitality is part of my upbringing and I want to show that kind of hospitality to others through barbecue
“Even if I don’t have the qualifications of some other chefs
While celebrating with food had been a constant in Mattar’s life
it wasn’t until a trip to Texas in 2013 that the barbecue bug got him after trying smoked brisket for the first time
After a while he decided to try smoking meat himself and did an apprenticeship in the US to help him along the way
Very soon he had to quit his succesful day job in oil and gas
He says: “I used to be at work in my suit and get an order to deliver some meats
get changed into the apron in my car and personally drive to deliver it then go back to the office and put the suit back on
There was really no way to explain to my colleagues where I was going and why I smelled so much of meat when I got back.“I didn’t realise at first that it was going to be my calling but hospitality just came naturally
I tried to be a salesman but I was putting all my efforts in and not getting the results
As soon as I started cooking I realised I got results 10 fold and I knew then and there it was my thing.”
From deli delivery to pop-ups at food markets and community events
Mattar’s meats captured people’s attention and his stands soon had queues wherever they appeared.“What we do is not a gimmick
so while we can’t say we’re the only barbecue joint
“In 2015 I was gearing myself up to give this a go without knowing what would happen
Ten years later I have the self-confidence that comes with success
And I have success because of that self-confidence.”
If you’ve ever seen Mattar in action you’ll be aware of his generosity of spirit and natural charm
He’s an animated presence behind the barbecue and in front of a camera
and as he walks out of his old house and into the garden
he comes alive with memories of his younger days
He turns the camera to show us the coastline behind the home and spots a rosemary bush in the garden
“My daughters exist because of this bush,” he says
“The girl I met and fell in love with lived here
and when I was 15 I asked her to come over for some food
I snipped some rosemary from this bush and made a pasta sauce with it in
“That was the first thing I ever cooked and I ended up marrying that girl.”
The villa is number 278 – and seeing the sign on the wall sparks another topic
“I have a dream to open a restaurant inside one of these old villas and I want to call is 872
I want to take the traditions of my childhood and flip them,” Mattar explains
“All of the things that my mum taught me how to make
From the initial success at pop-ups and activations he opened a concession at Time Out Market Dubai when it launched in 2021
That was his first brick and mortar location
and was followed by a temporary home at Madinat Jumeirah
as well as the seasonal Fiya at Keturah Reserve
teaming up with Pinza founder Tamer Elkhayat
His meats are now on sale at Spinney’s stores across Dubai and he’s still appearing at the likes of Icons of Porsche
he split from his previous business partners
while the man himself now uses simply Mattar
He says: “We had to start from scratch again after that but people really stuck their neck out for us and helped us get through it
All I has been was the pitmaster in the previous company
I didn’t take care of anything else and my business partners would lose it with me for giving away food to people in the line and things like that – I wasn’t thinking of it as a business
He credits some of Dubai’s most recognisable F&B names for helping him go it alone: Chef Colin Clague
former Time Out Market CEO Sandy Hayek and Pinza’s Elkhayat to name a handful
becoming more contemplative when we ask what drives him to keep going and trying new things
“It is my note of gratitude to my parents for how they raised me
it’s about connection because even if you have a public-facing personality
Clark needs friends and Bruce Wayne needs friends
“At times I have struggled and I’ve been personally lonely
I’ve used my success as a coping mechanism for my heart
and I’ve used it as revenge for the things I’ve felt were taken from me
but at some point that confident persona helps the good feeling resurface and things get better again
“Even if I need to put the public face on when we start serving
by the end of the line I know I’ll be good.”
Mattar is clearly a man who wears his heart on his sleeve
and his need for connection is not just a personal one
“Every time I’ve traveled the people always ask where I’m from and I would love to be an ambassador for Arab countrie and show that we’re more than they see on the news
I want to build a restaurant that we can take to New York
I want New York to wonder why they don’t have a halal smokehouse
“All of that isn’t to grow a business empire
it’s to give the world more touchpoints to Arab culture
I can achieve much more if I have more than a single restaurant
My dreams have actually very little to do with food
I want the opportunity to hug more people and please them.”

The news has now been confirmed that Van Venrooy KTM will be in the MXGP paddock in 2025
The team is slightly different than in the past as Gebben aren’t involved but most of the same people are back and motivated for the 2025 season
In the past the team focused on the MXGP World Championship but for 2025
they will have an MX2 World Championship rider in the form of Cas Valk who will step up from the EMX250 series
2025 will be his rookie season in the MX2 World Championship class but we know the speed is fast at the front of the EMX250 series so he has the potential to do well
We caught up wih Hattem who will be the team manager to discuss the deal
You left the paddock at the end of the 2023 season
what was this year like without working in the paddock
But luckily there is more to life than motocross
GateDrop: Going back to the end of the 2023 season it seemed a tricky situation as it looked like the Gebben van Venrooy team would maybe get factory backing but then that didn’t happen
Hattem: It is pointless for us to look back at the past
GateDrop: The news has just been announced you’ll be back in the MXGP paddock in 2025
How did the deal with KTM all come together
Hattem: When a brand like KTM approaches you to become a partner in a multi-year project with factory support
the people at KTM Austria are extremely helpful and that is very motivating
GateDrop: In the past the focus has been on the MXGP class but for 2025
the focus will be on the MX2 World Championship
What was the thinking behind this and is it a new motivation
Delivering a rider in the top six in the MXGP World Championship was the maximum achievable for us as a private team
In 2025 we will try to achieve the same in MX2
That is our challenge and we are very motivated to achieve this
you must be looking forward to working with him and he’s Dutch as well which must be nice
Hattem: For us as a team it is necessary that a rider believes in himself to achieve his goals
The fact that he is Dutch and comes from the same region is a bonus
GateDrop: Valk will be a rookie in the MX2 World Championship next year but we all know EMX250 is fast
What’s your expectations for him in the rookie season
Hattem: The level at the top of the EMX is quite high
That is the basis from which we will continue to work
We will have to reach a higher level than where Cas has now arrived
GateDrop: What can you tell me about the machinery that Cas will have in 2025
Hattem: KTM has an obligation to provide us with a competitive package and they will definitely keep that promise
GateDrop: You will only have one rider under the awning
what is the reason for this and was running two riders ever explored
Hattem: At the beginning of the negotiations
Our experience also shows that when you put all your energy and attention into 1 rider
this has a positive effect on both the rider and the team
GateDrop: I believe that the plan for 2026 will be to have two MX2 GP riders
Hattem: Then you are better informed than we are (laughs)
GateDrop: How long is your deal with KTM for
GateDrop: Where will the team be based in 2025 – has it involved getting a new warehouse/building etc organised
Hattem: The team has also made a professional step forward
The workshop has remained in the same place (in Rogat
the Netherlands) but has been completely renovated
everything has been adapted to the new colours
GateDrop: It seems like KTM are making some budget cuts in MXGP
Hattem: The youth is the future and they see that at KTM too

Hattem is a historian of early America and author of The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History and Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution.
During the presidential campaign for the 1912 election
addressed America’s anxieties about looking to the past for inspiration in his book The New Freedom. He began by claiming
“The laws of this country have not kept up with the change of political circumstances in this country.” “The government
which was designed for the people,” he continued
“has got into the hands of bosses and their employers
An invisible empire has been set up above the forms of democracy.” He pointed out that “our laws are still meant for business done by individuals; they have not been satisfactorily adjusted to business done by [corporations].” When circumstances changed
the government and its laws must change with it.
He directed his ire at conservatives in both parties who preached what he called “do-nothingism” out of “fear that we are now about to disturb the ancient foundations of our institutions.” To argue that the government could change while still retaining the character of its institutions
The founders who drew up the Constitution lived in an intellectual world defined by Isaac Newton’s laws of motion
and so they spoke of the Constitution as a machine
with its mechanical language of checks and balances
But the new intellectual world of the modern 20th century was defined by Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution
society was a living organism that constantly evolved
“All that progressives ask or desire is permission … to interpret the Constitution according to the Darwinian principle; all they ask is recognition of the fact that a nation is a living thing and not a machine.” With this metaphor
progressives argued that a nation needed a “living Constitution” to achieve progress.
Wilson also set his sights on the Declaration
“Some citizens of this country have never got beyond the Declaration of Independence,” he declared
“Their bosoms swell against George III
but they have no consciousness of the war for freedom that is going on today.” Besides
“the Declaration of Independence did not mention the questions of our day
It is of no consequence to us unless we can translate its general terms into examples of the present day.” Earlier
“We are not bound to adhere to the doctrines held by the signers of the Declaration of Independence; we are as free as they were to make and unmake governments
We are not here to worship men or a document
Every Fourth of July should be a time for … determining afresh what principles
what forms of power we think most likely to effect our safety and happiness
That and that alone is the obligation the Declaration lays upon us.”
many Americans came to see socialism as distinctly un-American
not least because the membership in various socialist parties in the 1900s and 1910s consisted largely of recent immigrants
the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia raised the stakes even higher
both for middle-class Americans anxious over the growing number of poor immigrants and for upper-class Americans worried that popular discontent could lead to the end of American capitalism and the class structure that kept them at the top
If Bolshevism could topple an ancient feudal empire in Russia
it could certainly topple a young capitalist republic
Many worried that immigration was serving as a Trojan horse for radical European Bolsheviks
a growing popularity of pseudoscientific ideas about racial hierarchies reinforced the rampant nativism and antiimmigrant sentiment of the 1910s and 1920s.
the Daughters of the American Revolution had been concerned that the United States was being “denationalized by Hungarians
and Italians who have never read the first letter of the spirit of Americanism.” By the 1910s
local DAR chapters had already spent two decades trying to assimilate immigrants by teaching and promoting their own interpretation of the principles of the Revolution
the national organization became more antiradical
In 1906 it stepped up its efforts “to educate and qualify the coming hordes for assimilation into the American type” by creating a national Committee on Patriotic Education
The committee organized lectures and evening classes that introduced immigrants to the nation’s history
It distributed preapproved sets of slides and other educational materials nationally
These efforts reached many immigrants across the country who hoped to assimilate and become American
while others did it out of prudence or necessity
The DAR also hosted patriotic clubs called Children of the Republic to teach immigrant boys and girls “a high standard of civic honor and patriotic citizenship.” Teaching them “American values” and their importance might make them less likely to grow up to become radical socialists
immigrants needed to learn to appreciate the inheritance of the Revolution
which was not just a set of ideas but a “way of life” they called “Americanism.” The organization defined this term in part by a commitment to the Constitution
and an appreciation for the nation’s revolutionary heritage
of which the DAR was the self-anointed keeper.
Political and economic elites worried after World War I that the country was heading down a dangerous path
Many Americans were losing their faith in the recently coined “American Dream.” Progressives had extended populists’ cynicism regarding the political system back to its origins
the system had not just become rotten over time; it had been rotten to the core from the very beginning
Many had come to believe that the Constitution did not truly represent the will of “We the People,” as they had long been told
had allowed wealthy elites to seize power from the democratic state legislatures and impose a powerful
centralized government that seemed to be the very antithesis of what ordinary Americans thought they were fighting for in 1776.
After the relatively recent history of radical Republicans’ Reconstruction amendments and the upholding of antitrust law to regulate monopolies
conservatives in the early 20th century reasserted their ownership of the Constitution with a renewed enthusiasm
that Americans are showing themselves the most conservative nation in a turbulent world
the largest cause of it lies in our Federal Constitution.” Sounding much like Southerners in the 1850s
conservative commentators praised the Constitution’s “powerful restraints on democracy.” They began to fear that if enough people came to feel that the nation’s origins were corrupt
the failure of the country itself would become inevitable
They worried that too many aspects of the modern world were diluting the revolutionary ideals that defined what it meant to be an American
Their brand of Americanism was characterized by an appreciation for the past and opposition to both government intervention and political and economic reform.
All these factors gave rise to a renewed brand of constitutional conservatism that helped create the distinctly modern popular memory of the Constitution. This conservatism was built on the belief that the first principle of the Constitution (and
the Revolution) was “limited government.” It was based on the narrative that the patriots rebelled primarily because of their opposition to Britain’s distant
and active centralized government. In this memory
the Constitution was intended to create a small
This characterization of the Constitution and the Revolution gained popularity among conservatives in the 1910s and 1920s in response to the rise of progressivism
opposition to President Wilson’s wartime price controls
Organizations from the DAR to conservative legal societies promoted the notion that the founders at the Constitutional Convention intended to create a limited government
an interpretation that contrasted usefully with progressivism and Bolshevism
Of course this rhetoric failed to consider that the convention’s purpose was clearly to create a more powerful government than that of the existing Articles of Confederation
But conservatives in the early 20th century played on the particular emotional attachment many Americans had to the Revolution
They claimed that progressives’ questioning of tradition and their criticism of the Constitution were insults to the memory of the Revolution
the National Association for Constitutional Government allied with the DAR and other patriotic organizations to create Constitution Day
an annual holiday each September 17 to mark the day the Constitutional Convention concluded in 1787
Constitution Day celebrations quickly became commonplace in the 1920s; both the American Bar Association and the National Education Association promoted an extended Constitution Week
By 1930 nearly all the states had passed new laws requiring public school students to learn about the Constitution
One of the biggest boosters of this revival of the Constitution after the end of the Progressive Era was the recently resurrected Ku Klux Klan
which was relatively small in numbers and primarily Southern
by 1925 the new organization boasted five million members from across the country
including many non-Southerners wary of Catholic immigrants and the beginning of the Great Migration of African Americans from the South into Northern cities
the organization’s periodical the American Standard celebrated Constitution Day
the publication explicitly tied the Revolution to Protestant Christianity: “When Washington and his great colleagues put into written form the immortal principles of liberty
and equal justice … they forged a weapon against Roman Catholicism.” In their telling
the founders “inscribed upon the eternal tablets of history the God-inspired provisions of our Federal Constitution
whose principles they derived from the teachings of the Holy Bible.” The issue included an editorial entitled “God and the Constitution” that claimed to give “a complete answer to the question
Are we a Christian nation?” Unsurprisingly
when the Ku Klux Klan described a “Christian nation,” they excluded all non-Protestant
including the recent waves of Catholic immigrants
who they claimed were part of a coordinated plan by the Pope to undermine the United States
The Ku Klux Klan — like Southern slaveholders in the antebellum period who had seen the Constitution as their most powerful tool for protecting slavery — believed the combination of a federal government strictly limited by the Constitution along with targeted political violence could help resist racial integration and both religious and ethnic diversity.
was neither first nor alone in their convictions about the relationship between religion and the Revolution
that the history of the United States had been guided by divine providence
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took it a step further
the Constitution itself had been a direct product of divine inspiration. In a revelation given to church founder Joseph Smith at Kirtland
“I established the Constitution of this land
by the hands of wise men whom I have raised up unto this very purpose.” As a result
Smith called the document “a heavenly banner.” In 1898 Wilford Woodruff
the current president of the Mormon Church
testified before his general conference to having been visited two nights in a row by the spirits of George Washington and the signers of the Declaration of Independence
whom he called “the best spirits the God of Heaven could find on the face of the earth.” In the early 20th century
some devout evangelicals were coming to share this belief that the actual writing of the Constitution had been “divinely inspired” and therefore it served as the nation’s “holy of holies
The idea of a divinely inspired Constitution had become common enough among some Americans by the 1920s that a few prominent legal scholars felt compelled to counter these perceptions at length
wrote in the New Republic about “the mystical adulation of the Constitution in the pious faith that it contains in itself the saving grace that will shield the interests of the worshippers from the ambitions of those whose interests are adverse.” “Self-styled patriotic societies,” he continued
“have spent themselves lavishly in expounding the gospel according to Mammon and identifying it with the parchment that came from Philadelphia.” In other words
Powell saw distinctly political interests behind these religious beliefs
a professor of constitutional law at Columbia University
reminded the public that “the constitution of the United States was not handed down on Mount Sinai by the Lord God of Hosts
It is not to be worshipped.” In his 1927 book The Written Constitution and the Unwritten Attitude
Charles Merriam incisively assessed this approach to the Constitution: “Those who worship the text
worship in reality their own attitudes which they fondly hope the interpretation of the text may produce.” This conservative inclination to celebrate or “worship” the founding in the early 20th century contrasted with progressives’ critical and utilitarian approach to the Revolution
and these two conflicting approaches would continue — with some slight modifications — throughout the 20th century.

Members of the Chamber of Deputies Marcel Van Hattem
DC (20 December 2024) In light of the ongoing state-driven censorship crisis in Brazil
including Senator Eduardo Girao and members of the Chamber of Deputies Marcel Van Hattem
are challenging the violations of their free speech rights before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
The Commission has jurisdiction over Brazil as a State Party to the American Convention on Human Rights
The American Convention robustly protects freedom of speech
including prohibitions on prior restraint (censoring expression before it has occurred) and special protections for political speech
Article 13 protects the “right to freedom of thought and expression” which includes “the freedom to seek
and impart information and ideas of all kinds… through any other medium of one’s choice… The exercise of the right…shall not be subject to prior censorship… [and] may not be restricted by indirect methods or means
such as the abuse of government or private controls … or by any other means tending to impede the communication and circulation of ideas and opinions.”
The legislators claim violations of their rights under the Convention
including their freedom of expression and the equal protection of the law
as a result of escalating state censorship
which recently reached a head with the X (formerly known as “Twitter”) ban
In their legal challenge now filed with the Commission
the legislators note that state-sponsored censorship
is “disproportionate and of dubious legal basis” and “has affected the conventional rights of the Victims in a direct
The petition goes on to say that the country’s X blockade “violated the rights of more than twenty million people in Brazil who are users of the platform
having prevented them from accessing the dissemination and reception of information during that time.”
Julio Pohl
ADF International’s lead legal counsel on the case
stated: “The world watched as Brazilian authorities blatantly clamped down on the free speech rights of over 20 million Brazilians by shutting down X ahead of the national elections
the fact remains that millions of Brazilians
including the five legislators now taking their case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
were subjected to unlawful censorship during a critical time in their country
and it’s time for the Commission to intervene and condemn the vast and ongoing violations of free speech being perpetrated by Brazilian authorities.”

Marcel van Hattem
member of the Chamber of Deputies for Brazil and one of the legislators who filed the petition
“What we have seen time and again in Brazil is an egregious silencing of political voices
or anyone else who might share different viewpoints from Judge Alexandre de Moraes or others in control
This is a major violation of all Brazilians’ free speech and expression rights
We can’t afford to lose Brazil to authoritarianism
which is why I am taking my case to the international level with the help of ADF International
These attempts to silence and censor cannot be allowed to stand.”
Eduardo Girao
Senator for Brazil and party to the petition
“Brazil is facing a very serious censorship problem
While our constitution protects our rights to speak and express ourselves freely as citizens of Brazil
Brazilians throughout the country are afraid to share their beliefs for fear of persecution and punishment
We must push back against censorship in our country
and it is my hope that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will fulfill its obligation to condemn the human rights violations that are taking place in our country.”
Censorship in Brazil has been a persistent and escalating problem in Brazil since 2019
The state has targeted conservative voices
including blocking pro-life messages during the 2022 election campaign
which contained views contrary to the pro-abortion position held by then-candidate Lula da Silva
Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the “immediate
complete and total suspension of X’s operations” in the country after the platform refused to comply with government orders to shut down accounts which it had singled out for censorship
ADF International petitioned the Commission to urgently intervene
“The blocking of X in the country is symptomatic of an endemic problem…it has dragged on for more than six years and has caused real damage to Brazilian democracy
producing a chilling effect on the majority of the population who
are afraid to express their opinions in public.”
Elon Musk thanked ADF International for its intervention
In September, over 100 global free speech advocates – including former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss
European and Latin American politicians and professors united in an open letter to call for free speech to be restored in Brazil
the state of censorship in Brazil remains severe

A Minot husband and wife previously arrested for alleged child sex crimes are now facing similar charges against vulnerable adults
were each charged Thursday with two counts of gross sexual imposition
sexual contact where the victim is unaware
The offense carries a punishment of up to 20 years in prison
Amber Hattem was also charged with one count of indecent exposure
The latest charges were announced Thursday in a statement by North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley's office
Charges were filed after alleged incidents at an adult facility in Minot between April and December 2024
Amber Hattem was reportedly employed as a certified nurse assistant at Minot Health and Rehab
Her role allowed her to make contact with patients
Authorities allege she made sexual contact with two patients who were unaware of the offense due to severe cognitive defects
She is also accused of exposing herself in a sexually explicit video while on duty inside a patient's room
Dalton Hattem reportedly encouraged his wife to perform and record the sexual acts
which she reportedly did and then sent videos of the acts to him
A review of images and videos from the couple's cellphones showed numerous sexually explicit scenes of Amber exposing herself inside identifiable sections within Minot Health and Rehab
Several of those images and videos included identifiable patients in the background who were reportedly unaware the incidents were taking place
Amber Hattem allegedly admitted to making the recordings at the urging of her husband Dalton for his sexual gratification
The Hattems were booked into the Ward County Jail on Dec
12 after they were charged in cases alleging they promoted or directed obscene sexual performances by minors
and possessed sexually inappropriate images or videos of minors
Those charges each carry up to 20 years and five years in prison
Dalton Hattem is also being held in connection with a pending federal case
according to information from the Ward County Jail
Details regarding that matter are currently unavailable
The December arrest came after an investigation that reportedly began after state Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents received a cyber-tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding alleged child sexual abuse materials
The cyber-tip included information that files were being transmitted using the KIK app
KIK provided investigators with information on the email addresses and electronic data of users linked to suspected child sexual abuse materials
These addresses and devices were registered to Dalton and Amber Hattem
Additional evidence came from cyber-tips from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation
leading investigators to the Hattem residence in Minot
BCI agents reviewed more than two dozen files reportedly containing child sexual abuse material
allegedly linked to devices owned by the Hattems
Minot police and Homeland Security Investigations personnel
Both Amber and Dalton Hattem were present during the search
Dalton reportedly denied having anything to do with the child sexual abuse material
telling investigators his electronic devices had been hacked
He also reportedly told law enforcement he had previously been "raided" when the couple lived in Fort Worth
He also reportedly stated he had never possessed child sexual abuse material or used the KIK app
Amber reportedly admitted to communicating on the KIK app and trading the child sexual abuse material
but allegedly only for the purposes of satisfying her husband
She also admitted to working at Minot Health and Rehab
investigators seized all of the couple's electronic devices for further analysis and both were taken into custody
Both are in custody on $500,000 bonds each
Preliminary hearings are scheduled for May 2

In his book, Past and Prologue: Politics and Memory in the American Revolution (Yale University Press
Hattem discusses the creation of an American historical memory that started at the founding of the nation
His book traces the shifting narratives that would become “American history” and how that history was created during the revolutionary period
As he explains in an interview with Max Pierce
the way that we think and talk about the past has a large effect on what we think and do in the present—in reshaping and reimagining the past
Max Pierce [MP]: Can you tell me how you chose the topic of your book?
So I took a mental note: it’s one of those things that you notice
and then it just floats in the back of your mind for a long time.
when I got to the point of needing to find a dissertation topic
but also because there really wasn’t a lot of early American scholarship on memory
Finding a topic that there hasn’t been a lot done on is not always an easy thing to do in any American history field.
that the dissertation would look at what I had found in the 1750s in New York City: how did English or British historical memory translate into a colonial society
it’s always perpetually subject to change depending on what is in the sources
I found some really interesting sources that forced me to expand the chronological scope of the project into the Revolutionary period.
MP: When you discovered new sources that changed the direction [of the project]
how did you decide what you wanted to include
MDH: I struggled with that. The main source that changed the project was at the New York Historical Society. I was looking at the John Jay papers
and I saw a manuscript in the catalog entitled
“The History of the American Revolution.”
I knew that John Jay hadn’t written a history of the revolution. Then, I saw that there was a notation on the cover that said, “Found among the papers of Governor William Livingston.” Livingston became the governor of New Jersey in 1776 and was originally from New York and a big part of those King’s College debates
I also knew that he didn’t write a history of the revolution either
but the most important history of the Revolution to be published in the early national period
I did some more research in Ramsay’s papers and found some letters where he talked about sending out the first six chapters of his manuscript to various people
The manuscript had sat in the New York Historical Society for 150 years without having been properly identified and authenticated
It was a really neat find just from an antiquarian perspective
but [that] its real value was that it really changed my thinking about the chronology of the project
MDH: When I compared the manuscript to the final published version
it was largely the same except for the first chapter
which in the draft gave an outline of seventeenth century English history
much like the stuff that I had seen from the 1750s
most of that was taken out and replaced with individual
more expanded histories of the settlement of the individual colonies.
stop thinking that the British past was their history
And how did they come to replace it with what we now call “American history”
That question then became the project’s overarching framework: reckoning with the creation of “American history.”
One of the things I found shocking was how similar the narrative
of what they came up with in the decade or two after the Revolution was to what I learned in high school back in the early nineties
And it was created by specific people in specific places who made very specific choices about what would originally be included in American history
They made hugely consequential decisions that then shaped how generations of Americans would understand American history.
MP: A lot of your work has to do with historical memory and the creation of historical memory
but some of our readers might not know exactly what you mean by that.
historical memory is a narrative about a specific event in the past that conveys a specific meaning to a specific audience
There’s a way to talk about the history of the American Revolution as though it was all about these high-minded ideals
There’s another way to talk about it that doesn’t take [those] ideas into account at all
and focuses on the experiences of people who have traditionally been left out of those kinds of popular narratives
Neither of those stories is necessarily wrong
historical memory reinforces previously held beliefs
It’s a way to make the past useful in the present by how you shape the narrative and the meanings that you want people to take from that narrative
MP: But I think a lot of people think that history is just one thing: that there’s a story that’s simply true
MDH: I have a line in the book where I say that memory lives in the shadow cast by history
everything that’s happened in the past
It’s everything that’s come before
But when historians try to recover the past
there’s a process of selection that goes on
Because you can’t include everything.
to try to recover something concrete from this mass of ambiguity
And the past is ambiguous until historians make some sense of it
there’s a lot of room in that shadow for memory to do its work.
Part of the reason the past is malleable is because there are many ways that you can tell [it]
each [history] could look like an entirely different event
That’s where you start to hear people talk about revisionist history
especially when conservatives use that term.
The way my book tries to address that kind of thinking is to show that the Revolutionary generation that many conservatives idolize were the biggest historical revisionists out there
They totally discarded a history that they had believed was their own for hundreds of years and said
we’re going to throw that out and make it up as we go along.” One of the broad points of the book is that historical revisionism
was a fundamental part of the process of the Revolution and its cultural process
is that every generation of Americans has defined the Revolution to suit their ideologies
The specific narrative that many Americans
the way they learned it was that this was always the case: “This is how Americans have always thought about the Revolution,” when in reality
The idea that people have never thought about the revolution differently is not intuitive for most readers
Part of that is because the memory of the Revolution was part of Cold War propaganda—and think about how effective Cold War propaganda was
Some of it outlasted communism and the Cold War itself
It’s a reminder of how powerful historical memory can be
Historical memory is almost analogous to religion
Part of the intention of Sunday school is to instill the values
and narratives of faith into the child because the earlier they internalize those things
the less likely they will be to question them later on in life.
MP: How have changes that we’ve seen in recent years affected your work or how you view your work as a historian
MDH: When I started my dissertation research in 2013 or 2014
I didn’t choose the topic for its relevance
But by the time the book came out in November 2020
and revolution were all over the headlines.
I felt like most historians: I wasn’t pleased with how history was being used in the public sphere
When I would see people saying wrong things
or making what I thought were wrong interpretations of the Revolution
I really don’t feel like that anymore
Part of the reason is that I’ve come to realize
not just how common political uses of historical memory are
but how common they have been throughout American history
or a political agenda is fundamental to American political culture and has been since 1800.
The other thing that softened my indignation was that a lot of what I would get upset about was almost always about an interpretation rather than a factual error
“The Declaration was signed in 1777,” then somebody needs to correct that because it’s a factual error
But trying to make sense of the past in light of the present is such an important part of American political culture
[and] it isn’t necessarily the historian’s place to try to dictate what meanings people should take from the past.
here’s my interpretation of the coming of the American revolution.” It’s another thing to say
“This is the only possible correct interpretation.” And no historian should think that because historiography moves so fast—books that were written 30–40 years ago are not read anymore and they’re superseded
My book won’t be read in 20 years or 30 years
So there’s no real cause for any kind of certainty in your historical interpretation.
But what is the meaning that people are supposed to take from a certain interpretation of the Revolution
I increasingly think that it’s not my place as a historian to tell people
“This is the meaning of the American Revolution,” or
“This is the meaning of whatever part of American history.” That’s for them to decide as citizens of the United States
People are going to come up with meanings that I don’t agree with or that I think might be wrong
but there’s lots of room for persuasion there
and we should approach that with a bit of humility
MP: What do you want your readers to come away with after reading Past and Prologue
I want people to realize that the past is subjective
We turn the past into history by interpreting and attaching meaning to it
I want people to realize that this process of rethinking the past—what the past means—is a fundamental part of our political culture
and has been since the founding of the nation
Once you realize that American history was
then it should be easier to come to grips with the idea that how we think about the past changes over time and is different for different people
And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Because you recall the history of the last time that you did laundry
That’s not meant to downplay the importance of expertise or of specialization
Just because everybody is a historian or everybody comes up with their own meanings doesn’t mean that they’re all equally valid
but it still has its place and value because the past is an important part of how we try to make sense out of the present.

One bit of dissent: When Hattem says “My book won’t be read in 20 years or 30 years,” he overlooks the likelihood that someone will be reevaluating the reevaluations of American historical identity in the 2020s.”
He should have been asked his opinion on The 1619 Project.”

As a single father, chef Hattem Mattar’s ideas and dreams on parenthood might not align to that of his own upbringing, but he’s determined his girls make life-long memories to cherish
“No matter what question I ask myself getting up in the morning, the answer is always, somehow, ‘For my family’.
Growing up I had the quintessential third culture upbringing – strong Egyptian roots. My parents were very present in our lives. It was an inquisitive Islamic upbringing that had us reading all the time, and saw us embark on adventures in every part of the world you could think of. My mum was the heart of the entire family, aunts and uncles and grandparents included. My father was the sage for the same people. We had the best of both worlds – emotion and intelligence, in that order.

I had both girls before I was 30. So now, a few days away from 40, I have two young adults to hang with. That’s such a great feeling. We are father and daughter when there is discipline that needs to be addressed, otherwise we are friends. We are colleagues in the kitchen, coaches and students in the sports we play. It gives us the capability to always communicate. We always have a chance to be there for each other.
A post shared by Hattem Mattar | حاتم مطر (@hattemmattar)
The time I have with the girls is piecemeal. It hurts to miss out on things like school mornings together and dinner together consistently. But we make the most of our time. Because the time isn’t what a ‘normal’ household would be. You have to balance being a disciplinarian with knowing that you don’t want to spend the limited resources doing this instead of being there for them.
It’s so important to make memories together, naturally and all the time. The obscure things we remember as adults from our childhood are things our parents never thought we’d remember. So I try to make as many of those memories positive and happy. They will be better for it, as will I as a father.
I’m just so proud of my girls, of their characters and how they carry themselves with such grace and confidence. They are wise beyond their years. My hope for them is that they grow up to be happy. I hope they find their sense of satisfaction early and run with it, making the world a better place.”

The Supreme Court’s ruling last week that federal law protects gay and transgender workers from discrimination was facilitated
by law students working in the Stanford Supreme Court Litigation Clinic
Last week the United States Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – the statute that bars discrimination in the workplace based on sex – protects gay and transgender workers
The ruling was a major victory for the LGBTQ community
as well as some Stanford law students graduating this year
“We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome,” said Connie Wang
Wang is one of the Stanford law students who participated in the Stanford Supreme Court Litigation Clinic last year
Under the direction of Stanford Law School faculty members
students in the clinic work on Supreme Court cases
representing parties and serving as advisers
The case they worked on was Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, which combined three cases, including one involving Donald Zarda, a New York skydiving instructor who was fired after telling a customer he was gay. Zarda’s legal team included students in the clinic, and the clinic’s co-director, law Professor Pamela Karlan
who argued the case before the Supreme Court last October
“There are only so many cases that go up to the Supreme Court each year,” Wang said
“So we’re lucky that the court chose to hear this one.”
assisting Karlan in researching and developing legal arguments
The case had already been heavily debated in lower courts
so their work focused on how best to frame and add to the existing arguments
One of their main arguments focused on Title VII’s use of the word “sex” and whether a person fired for sexual orientation is discriminated against because of sex. In an article published last November in Stanford Lawyer
the students explain that firing an employee for being gay is
“If a man is fired for being attracted to men where a woman attracted to men would not be
that is discrimination on the basis of sex
both show up to work on Monday and tell their boss that they married Bill the day before and the employer congratulates Joanne but fires Joseph
that employer has clearly discriminated against Joseph because of his sex.”
the justices ruled that the protections outlined in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act extend to gay and transgender workers
In the days since the Supreme Court announced its decision
many have lauded it as a victory for LGBTQ workers’ rights and the plaintiffs in the case
“I’m relieved that the gay and trans employees at the heart of these cases ‘won,’” said A.D
a trans student at Stanford Law School who previously served as president of OutLaw and is now the organization’s Trans & Nonbinary Outreach Chair
But Lewis explained that while the court’s decision is a step in the right direction
there remains much work to be done to achieve full protections for marginalized workers
He noted that many people remain unprotected because of inherent and court-created limits of anti-discrimination laws
workers aren’t even covered by the decision,” he said
“More and more workers can’t access courts to vindicate their rights because the Supreme Court held that the Federal Arbitration Act permits employers to require workers to sign away their rights under Title VII through mandatory arbitration clauses.”
Karlan noted the importance of this decision for so many people
“I’ve gotten emails from young people who are gay who now realize the importance of this – that they can aspire to fair employment practices
And that just means a huge amount to me – that this is a case that touches real people’s lives in real ways,” she said

Home | Food | Hattem Mattar became the Arab world’s king of barbecue to find a way back to himself
From fire comes life—Esquire Middle East visits the Middle East’s first pitmaster at the Mattar Farm in Dubai
Hattem Mattar was a child growing up in Egypt when he learned an important lesson: food and fire bring people together
a master home cook who never got a title as fancy as ‘pitmaster’ attached to her name but probably deserved one
Every summer she would fire up the kind of feast that people come from far and wide to get a taste of
even people on her husband’s side of the family would come to Mattar’s mother for advice
soaking up her every technique—traditional Egyptian food that would “bring the Egyptian truth,” as Mattar puts it
and see the joy on people’s faces—friends and enemies bending to the will of a great meal
as he sat at home alone with his two daughters after his marriage had fallen apart and his career in security seemed to be sputtering with it
Mattar turned to food to find a way back to joy
“Barbecue has the magnetism of both food and fire
I’m going to tell you this—I pushed for Mattar Farm to become what it is during my divorce
It was the satisfaction of people giving me a hug because I made them a great sandwich
that was the little hit of dopamine and comfort that I needed over the two years I was getting divorced,” says Mattar
Before Hattem Mattar became the Arab world’s greatest pitmaster, before he was picked to represent the UAE at the country’s embassy in the United States, before his delectable, authentic-yet-unique ‘third-culture’ brisket sandwiches had crowds in the hundreds lining up for hours at every weekend pop-up that the Mattar Farm set up around Dubai
Mattar’s biggest accomplishment was to not let the people telling him he was a failure seep too far into his psyche
And if enough people tell you that—hundreds of people that were supposed to be your crew
telling you that you’re not going to be sh*t—it’s hard to hear,” says Mattar
Mattar woke up every morning and said to himself
I have an adamantium skeleton,” again and again
with each journal having a name to reflect his current state of mind
his journal was titled ‘adamantium heart’—the fictional metal of the X-Men universe that can never be broken
And Mattar turned to the same thing he did when he missed his mother back at university in Windsor
and marvelled at the ability for the food he made to bring people closer
blood and toil is demanded of the work that took Mattar years of trial and error to perfect
His shelves are lined with every book ever written on the subject
and Mattar devoured them with the same appetite as he did the food
failing more often than succeeding to recreate the years of wisdom others gained in the smoky pits of Texas
before finally creating something he was proud of
Let’s cut to the happy ending for a minute—the Mattar Farm is not just a brand name
has planted his spirit and watched it bloom
Esquire Middle East went to visit it in February
and Mattar’s boundless energy reverberated off of every surface—a patch of heaven full of goats
of still-growing vegetables that Mattar plucks from the earth so you can taste how they are supposed to taste
Mattar welcomed us with open arms on the condition that we bring along with us a healthy appetite
over one fire was a prime rib—that was for his family’s dinner—and over another was one of his latest projects
It’s hard to imbue the words ‘chicken wings’ with mic-drop energy
or make it feel as if there is a herculean effort involved that requires an encyclopaedic knowledge to execute properly
Mattar burns only oak—which he has to source from woods in Romania
Sometimes his wood guy runs out of the right wood
‘I know where you live!’ That changes the flavour of the brisket completely
It changes the flavour of everything!” said Mattar
who now has stockpiles of oak around his farm
If you put a piece of wood on there and mid-burn the smoke changes colour
you’ll taste the contamination in the food
You’re constantly having to make sure,” said Mattar
and most of the food Mattar makes takes days
even though smoking them is by far the slowest option
His are crispy and juicy because during the smoking process
I responded with an exclamation not fit for print
Mattar then brought out some jerky he’s been working on
with the aim of selling them at petrol stations around the country
That response causes Mattar to furrow his brow
“That’s not what I like to hear… Alright
I guess we’ll keep working at it,” says Mattar
after Mattar finally reached a point where he felt he’d perfected the art of the smoke
the same place he tried the brisket sandwich that changed his life
to put himself to the real test—an apprenticeship with a true Texas pitmaster
Mattar was nervous—this wasn’t in cosmopolitan Houston
a place where the double-duty Ford F-350s had stickers on the back that said
we have our own guns.’ Mattar was suddenly extremely aware of his non-whiteness as an Arab guy from the other side of the world
He didn’t know if the only smoke he’d smell would be from the end of a gun barrel
what his mother taught him—food and fire bring people together
“I was introduced to a man named Carter Jennings
from four o’clock in the morning until nightfall
with the smell of smoke in so deep you couldn’t wash it out
Bracewell and company took Mattar out to their secret spot on the Colorado River
I asked them to tell me about where they grew up
making sure to spend a week with them each trip
Some days they would paddle the Guadalupe River
there was still a hole in his life he was still fighting to fill
The part of him that was ‘husband’ filled so much of his mind and heart that he ramped up the number of events that Mattar Farm appeared at
just to see the same familiar faces return to eat his food
it’s that I remember every single person that comes to eat my food
Even before his divorce, Mattar was the type of guy whose ‘love language’ was ‘words of affirmation’—a need he now knows the terms for and is able to articulate. In previous incarnations of himself, he was an undefeated professional fighter who fought on the undercard with George St. Pierre, regarded as one of the greatest of all MMA fighters
with records at his university that stood until 2010
so I was always chasing that,” said Mattar
Mattar Farm fills that need like nothing ever has before
I’m proud of you.’ It makes it easier to sleep.”
he’s even been able to reconcile with some of the people who told him he’d never amount to anything
including an old boss at a major security company who once fired him on his birthday
when he was at his lowest point eight years ago
That manager knew that he had the uncanny ability to connect with people
that that power wasn’t being channelled into something productive
‘I’m letting you go just because your attitude reflects on your peers and your peers look up to you
it’s a detriment to follow you because of how you’re behaving
Mattar has since retired his ‘Adamantium Heart’ journal
and for the last four years has written in one with a different title—Kintsugi
the Japanese art of putting broken pottery pieces back together with gold
making them stronger and more beautiful for having been broken
The gold that’s filled his cracks are the barbecue and the joy it’s brought both him and everyone who’s tried it
and he’s stronger than he ever was without it
and the space he’s built for himself and his family
I don’t have to lecture them about gratitude
because they saw how long it took to make each egg
The lesson is right in their hands,” said Mattar
“I will say with extreme humility and gratitude
When they think of the best brands to represent Dubai
and become the person that deep down he knew—and at some points maybe just hoped—he could become

This T-Shirt has not only raised over $100,000 for restaurants and eateries nationwide but it also built a tight-knit community of food lovers and makers from Harlem to Hawaii
The campaign officially started five weeks ago
when Hattem and Aaron along with Samah Dada and Celine Yousefzadeh began partnering with Manhattan and Brooklyn-based restaurants to create a simple product with a big payoff: a white cotton tee
Keeping in mind that employees were already under a lot of pressure
Hattem and Aaron structured the campaign to require the least additional efforts from each individual restaurant to make the most possible money for all

a method that encourages community instead of competition
“With all of the shared challenges that everyone is experiencing

the duo found a safely operating factory to print the tees and secured enough partners to launch their first collection
which included brunch go-tos like Good Thanks
For art direction, Josh Greenstein took the lead on the initiative's call to action aesthetic. The campaign’s eye-catching and empathetic slogan, “Bought This T-Shirt And Stayed The F*** Home,” has even garnered the attention and following of foodie models like Meghan Roche and Karlie Kloss

Krost conceptualized his namesake streetwear brand in response to the March for Our Lives demonstration by making a point to stitch awareness and design together under the brand’s unifying message “Support Your Friends.”

BELGIUM – On the morning of March 22
Belgium suffered twin terror attacks on Brussels’ international airport and a city metro station
At least 34 people are confirmed dead with more than 230 injured as of this report
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack
“We are devastated by this news,” said President Gijsbertus van Hattem of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Belgium (ELKB – Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk in België)
who had been scheduled to fly from the airport later the same day
“But we take comfort in the peace of Christ—a peace which passes all understanding
we have the suffering and risen Lord with us.”
President van Hattem is encouraging Christians across the globe to lift up the situation in prayer
“We ask our friends around the world to keep Belgium in prayer in these days,” he said
“Pray especially for those who are mourning the loss of loved ones
and those tasked with investigating this dreadful incident and protecting citizens.”
“And keep not only us in prayer,” he continued
“Pray for all those suffering in the midst of civil unrest and terrorism—in Europe
but especially also in the Middle East and Africa
May God grant comfort to the sorrowing and peace to the persecuted
And may the Gospel of Jesus Christ be good news to a world in great conflict.”
The ELKB is a member church of the International Lutheran Council
a global association of confessional Lutheran church bodies

Home | Brief | The first Arab ‘pitmaster’ Hattem Mattar is using fire to ignite his future
He is that guy who is the life of the party
He’s the guy who rides a Ducati; who knows Jiu Jitsu; who has jumped out of a plane more times than you’ve had hot dinners
But he’s also the guy who will make you dinner—and insist that you bring your family and will toil away to make sure that everyone has everything they need
He’s the first guy to put his arm around your shoulder when he sees that something is wrong
He’s the guy whose presence lifts the room when he walks in
He’s the most interesting person in the room
but in some way are glad that you’re not because all that seems a lot to carry on one person’s shoulders
The Farm House is buzzing
The recently launched al fresco restaurant in Dubai’s Souk Madinat Jumeirah is simmering with the sound of people chatting mixed with banging old school hip-hop tunes
The winter air is thick with the smell of wood-smoked meat and there is an almost visible energy swirling under the strings of festoon lights and between the picnic-style tables
It’s the soft opening week of Hattem Mattar’s first permanent restaurant and it is filled with Mattar loyalists
People are partly coming to show their support for the self-styled ‘first Arab Pitmaster’
and partly to chow down on some of that insanely good barbecue and brisket that has propelled his star into the public conscious (and the city’s casual dining scene) over the past couple of years
That’s what I want [The Farm House] to be.”
The man at the centre of it all is cock-a-hoop. Wearing his trademark orange camel leather apron (custom-made by homegrown brand Tamashee, and personally inscribed by the calligraphy of Dubai-based artist eL Seed)
seamlessly flipping between eruptions of laughter and humble nods of appreciation thanking people for giving up their evening. “People come in as strangers
and leave on a first-name basis,” says Mattar of his new Jumeirah-backed restaurant where all the food will be cooked on a ‘live fire’
We built a community that turned into a business—not the other way around.” And that community has shown up in force
There is a bit of a ‘line in the sand’ feeling to the evening
Mattar’s first foray into the restaurant business was several years ago via a pop-up in Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue arts district, called The Mattar Farm
The fact that there was an unprofessionally trained cook from Barsha who had dedicated hundreds of hours to painstakingly smoking meat in his back garden for the purpose of sharing his passion and appreciation for the cuisine with others in a way that was untapped in the city’s dining scene
failing more often than succeeding to recreate the years of wisdom others gained in the smoky smoking pits of Texas
“I’ve always been someone who is ultimately self-sufficient
but also someone who is amplified when there are others around me.”
Mattar only burns oak—which he has to source from woods in Romania
“That changes the flavour of the brisket completely
It changes the flavour of everything!” says Mattar
You’re constantly having to make sure,” he says
The commitment to detail is something that Mattar has built into his ethics. With the previous success of The Mattar Farm
and the positive early signs of The Farm House
the response from the public has been overwhelming
and because of that it is something that he takes seriously
The impact that food can have on people when they need it most is something that Mattar has experienced first-hand
more stories about how much his barbecue is appreciated by people—some willing to cue for an hour to taste it
But he also hears stories of how his food is often used as a sign of commiseration as well as celebration
I had one customer who had the tough job of having to let some staff go during Covid lockdown
Whenever he had to deliver some bad news he would later send that person a delivery of our brisket plate to try and cheer them up
When I got those orders I would always add in a pot of ice cream on the house,” he recalls
“I am quite humbled that food that I cook can have that effect on people
a mouthful of brisket and some ice cream can make someone’s day better
The additional free ice cream is probably a bad business move
but it is the exactly the human element that he lives and dies by

While new players must find a way to integrate themselves into a situation where the team may have already built a strong relationship and chemistry with one another
a new coach often must get a group of players they may not know — and often
their parents — to buy into their philosophy and approach to the game
Some coaches spend years taking their lumps
Panas head coach Matt Evangelista saw his team reach the Westchester County Center — which has hosted the Section 1 girls basketball semifinals and finals championships since 2006 — this year after six seasons of mediocrity while molding the Panthers into a postseason contender
Somers girls basketball head coach Marc Hattem is becoming an expert at this
“The one thing I always attach with leadership is trust,” Hattem said
following Somers’ Class A section final win over Eastchester last Sunday
“I believe if you can build that trust — and it’s taken a long time
right after the Slam Dunk (Tournament) — from there
Somers sophomore Hannah Angelini and freshman Dani DiCintio both voluntarily praised Hattem in their postgame interviews after the section final
When DiCintio was asked what the deciding factor was that earned Somers the win in a back-and-forth battle
Hattem’s counterpart in the title game, Eastchester head coach Lindsay Farley, knows all about turning around a program from the start. Farley transformed a rebuilding Eagles program into a championship contender in just the three years she’s been at the helm
The Eagles had previously never reached the County Center and last won a section title in 1991
Farley declined the school’s offer to watch game film of the team from the previous season because she wanted to get her “own thoughts about the girls without judging them on past experiences.”
who coached under her maiden name of Carr before getting married this past offseason
even the greatest of coaches will have difficulty finding success without the right group of players who are receptive to change
Steve Loscher coached Keio to a program-record 14 wins and an appearance in the Class C section final in his first and only season with the Unicorns
and they just do everything the right way,” he said last year
kids that don’t get in the game don’t pout
they don’t complain about playing time — they just want to be a part of some success.”
Loscher took Peekskill — a highly competitive girls basketball program — to the Class A final in 2015
an all-Japanese school that never won more than 11 games in a season prior to his arrival
Loscher now coaches the Ramapo boys basketball team
given his position as a physical education teacher in the Ramapo Central School District
Loscher, who has coached male and female teams and has coached at both the high school and collegiate levels
said it was “refreshing” to see how the Keio players conducted themselves on and off the court
that some of these other teams that have played since third grade have,” Loscher said last year

Co-op Dungeons & Dragons hack-and-slash series Dark Alliance is making a comeback
will be released next autumn for PC and consoles
developed by Tuque Games and Wizards of the Coast
Back to Dark Alliance: it will be a spiritual successor, not a direct successor, to the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games from the PlayStation 2 and Xbox era
"It's a new story," Tuque studio head Jeff Hattem told me in an interview
It's been so long since the original Dark Alliance and Dark Alliance 2 - it's generations ago
console generations - we felt it wouldn't do that- those two games are really good in their own right and we're putting our own spin on things
"We felt like this is a new beginning for the franchise."
The new beginning means moving away from the Baldur's Gate setting and into Icewind Dale
but the story will continue to center around Drizzt Do'Urden and RA Salvatore's stories
a new beginning means moving from top-down gameplay to third-person
"We wanted to bring in the camera to have a more intimate
visceral experience with the harshness of Icewind Dale," Hattem said
Co-op will still be fundamental to the experience
Four people will be able to play through the entire story
We know the playable characters are Drizzt Do'Urden
The teaser video (embedded) reminds me of Warhammer: Vermintide
another four-player action RPG but a first-person game
But Hattem said: "Our game is its own thing
Definitely there's the co-op aspects of Vermintide that are similar
Our game plays completely differently to Vermintide since theirs is first-person and ours is third-person
[...] Our game is more group-focused." He wouldn't elaborate how
Hattem wouldn't specify which consoles Dark Alliance is in development for but bear in mind an autumn 2020 release date puts the game in next-gen
Hattem couldn't talk about the possibility of cross-platform play but did say Dark Alliance will not be a free-to-play game
"We don't know the pricing just yet but it's not a free-to-play game," he said
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was basically Baldur's Gate for console and therefore sped up and more action packed
The original was developed by Snowblind with help from publisher Black Isle
A planned third game fell apart when Black Isle was closed and Interplay went bankrupt
Snowblind, however, would go on to make a spiritual successor of sorts in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it was pants. Snowblind was then merged with Monolith to create the excellent Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Not many people remember Dark Alliance these days. It's nearly 20 years old, after all. So it was some surprise when our former intern Imogen Beckhelling announced - herself not much older - she was a big Dark Alliance fan. How could this be? The answer is "her nan". Imogen shared her rather touching Dark Alliance story a couple of months ago.

nearly all of them refugees from South Sudan's civil war
The 27-year-old South Sudanese refugee sells candy
cigarettes and other small items at his shop in Uganda’s Bidi Bidi refugee settlement
behind a stylized sign reading “Welcome to California."
There are more than 1 million South Sudanese refugees living in Uganda
fleeing a nearly four-year civil war that has split backers of President Salva Kiir
More than one-quarter of the refugees live in Bidi Bidi
it's now the world’s largest refugee camp — bigger even than the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya
which has long held the title and been open since the 1990s
There are no longer thousands of new refugees arriving at Bidi Bidi each day, as there were several months ago. Now, on its first birthday, the settlement is preparing for the likelihood that many of its residents will stay for years — or perhaps permanently. In the words of the United Nations’ refugee chief, these refugees are likely in for “a long-term exile.”
“[If] there is peace there [in South Sudan]
over the next decade it will be transformed into “a big city” with factories and shopping centers
“I’m actually more optimistic than ever now,” he said
“Because I see more creative ideas from the refugees themselves
I see them try to engage now in livelihood programs.”
The settlement’s population is already larger than most Ugandan cities
rural area of bureaucratic zones and planned villages that looks
There are marketplaces scattered throughout and a growing commercial area near the main entrance
Baryamwesiga predicts that Bidi Bidi’s population might double or even quadruple in size
“It’s possible that that place can host even a million people,” he said
Uganda has been praised for its unique refugee policy
allows them to travel freely and gives them a plot of land on which to build a home
If not for the UN’s distinctive tarpaulin or occasional aid group signs
parts of Bidi Bidi could be mistaken for neighboring Ugandan villages
Uganda’s refugee system rests on a requirement that all aid groups working with refugees devote 30 percent of their projects to local Ugandans
Locals benefit from the new schools and health centers
and some get high paying jobs with international aid groups
the policy acts as a sort of development program for Uganda’s impoverished northwest and earns goodwill abroad
Uganda has accepted refugees from virtually all its neighbors
Many refugees have remained for long periods of time
“They have been integrated within the community,” said Naku Charles Lwanga
the Uganda country director for the Real Medicine Foundation
“Sometimes it is very difficult to identify who’s a refugee and who is a Ugandan.”
“If the policy remains friendly the way it is
the refugees after maybe 10 years [or] 20 years
they’re just totally integrated," he said
But money is tight. The UN has received just 29 percent of the $674 million it has requested to respond to the South Sudanese refugee crisis
Locals are starting to complain that there aren’t as many jobs or facilities as they had expected
Doko has seen the beginnings of Bidi Bidi’s evolution
A few feet up the road there’s a primary school made from brick and mortar
instead of the tents that have been used across most of the settlement
have built permanent mudbrick homes to replace the temporary structures from the early months
but are increasingly rare thanks to new boreholes
the miles of dirt roads can wash away or flood during seasonal rains
There are few opportunities for older children to attend secondary school
Refugees in Bidi Bidi struggle to earn an income
Many rely on rations from the UN World Food Program
and some sell a portion of their rations to afford sugar
The soil is too rocky and infertile for farming
but unfortunately the seeds were burned by the sunshine,” said Calisto Bonju
who fled from the South Sudanese town of Yei when his neighbors’ houses were burned and looted
Bidi Bidi is far preferable to South Sudan
who left the capital of Juba when explosive inflation caused by the war made his money worthless
much of South Sudan’s southern Equatoria regions have been so ravaged by the war that there would be little left for them
“There is nothing there at all,” said Ben Bero
South Sudan underwent decades of conflict and destabilization under Sudan’s northern government before its independence in 2011
either as refugees or to look for opportunities in its schools and businesses
was born in Uganda and lived here until he was 14 before moving to his family’s home in the South Sudanese town of Torit
he’s wary of going back home just to become a refugee again in another few years
because you cannot stay for 10 years and then be back here,” he said
permanent city of refugees might not be acceptable to all of its Ugandan neighbors
Related: Ugandans pose as refugees for food because the drought is so bad
said that he was threatened by local Ugandans when he attempted to look for fertile ground to plant his crops near Bidi Bidi
Disputes between the two communities have taken place over natural resources such as farmland and firewood
Some locals have grown aggrieved that there aren’t as many jobs with international NGOs as they had expected
But the tensions rarely boil over into overt anti-refugee sentiments
People from South Sudan with education or a little money in their pocket often travel out of the refugee settlements
to find work in nearby towns or even the vibrant capital
but occasionally visits aunts who work in Kampala
It could be another decade until the war ends

Chef Hattem Mattar talks us through his bespoke culinary journey and his love for well-sourced ingredients
The first 30 minutes of my day in the winter are my dreams come true
say a prayer and then get in the car to take my eldest daughter to school
It’s a hunger (pun intended) that turned into a form of expression that turned into a calling
I was interested in a dish that didn’t exist in the UAE
To connect us to them and them to the region and our culture
“More and more the journey has been how barbeque and live fire cuisine connect all cultures and how similar we are.”
The journey has been the evolution of what we’re doing
From grilling in the backyard to cooking in front of the White House as the culinary ambassador of the UAE embassy
More and more the journey has been how barbeque and live fire cuisine connect all cultures and how similar we are
The heart of any house is the kitchen table
I’m still honing my cooking skills as we speak
My mother is still my culinary idol and I don’t think there’s a better chef in the world
I ask her about things she made for us kids and she’s always happy to show me the magic behind the curtain
We’ve travelled the world representing the UAE
Anywhere you can light a fire or put a pot
We’ve had the privilege and pleasure to cook and watch some of the best in the world doing it
The cool thing about barbeque is there is no trick
Cooking with fire is like a Rubik’s cube that has no wrong answers
The important thing is to know what is the end result you’re looking for and to be confident in the variables you’re working with to get them
Low and slow for brisket is pretty well known
Hot and fast for grilling is also pretty effective
To be called to the list in and of itself was an experience
The team and the island are the perfect example of head-to-toe hospitality and professionalism
We got the freshest ingredients locally and made a menu that reflected the Arabian hospitality and simplicity of the cuisine we make
It was an honour to be included with other experts
craftsmen and creatives to be able to share our passion for barbeque with the guests on the island
“The cool thing about barbeque is there is no trick
FIYA is about the power of the element to bring people together
The intensity of the fires we build every day contrasted with the tranquility of our olive grove setting outside the city
It’s a collaboration between old friends and colleagues in the industry
Tamer El Khayat from Pinza is the first person I did a collaboration with when we started
We launched Mattar and Pinza two weeks apart in 2015
The opening of FIYA is miles further down the same road we started then
It still stands for the same things which is excellent ingredients
incredible service and happiness in everything we do

Personally and professionally I would have told my younger self to do it better
I already held and hold myself to a higher standard
I feel like my younger self could have squeezed out a bit more excellence
I don’t think I would have listened to myself anyway
There isn’t anything that influences my cooking more
In everything we do we are exemplifying where we are from with the polish and knowledge of where we’ve been
I’m cooking at a wedding in Spain for a couple I met while travelling through Brazil
It’s a year long promise that I kept when we hung out
After that and for the first time in seven years
I might actually decide to take some time off during the summer and not put on the apron or have my knives with me
I plan on trip to California through their national parks in the wild of the west
