Oliver Heer completed his journey from a supporting role as an IMOCA boat captain to finishing his first Vendée Globe today becoming the first Swiss-German sailor to do so. After 99 days racing he fulfilled his childhood dream, one which he harboured as a nipper who had posters of his sailing idols on his bedroom wall. He has shown great tenacity and resilience but also excellent seamanship, always taking the low risk choices, the option which gave him most chance to finish the race.
How do you feel after your first non stop round the world race and this finish?
You faced many obstacles even before the start of this Vendée Globe: a collision during the Route du Rhum, a rigging problem during the Transat Jacques Vabre... Do you think that these challenges made you stronger to take on this race?
Yes, these events have strengthened my team and me. It really wasn’t easy to get to the Vendée Globe, but it had two positive consequences. Firstly, it forced us to improve the reliability of the boat. Secondly, it proved how determined we were to be at the start. In hindsight, I wouldn’t change anything.
What will you remember from this round the world race?
That’s a difficult question to answer. What I can say is that I experienced some incredibly strong moments, but also some very complicated passages. I really can’t point to one moment that was more memorable than another, but sailing 23,000 miles without stopping is proof that there was real harmony between my boat and me, despite the small problems encountered along the way. Considering the budget and the time we had to prepare, I think we achieved a great performance.
It was never a problem for me. The word solitude has a negative connotation in French, but in German, it is rather perceived positively and in fact there is not such a word. At sea, I was happy, I felt good. I had also worked before the race with a mental trainer, which helped me a lot to understand this aspect.
Do you think you have changed as a result of this experience?
Give me a week or two, then ask my wife! (Laughs)
I’ve only just arrived, so it’s a bit early to say. But one thing is for sure: I had an extremely positive experience in this Vendée Globe. I thought that finishing the race would mark the end of a long project, and in the end, I feel like it’s the start of something even bigger. I’d be very happy to be at the start in 2028!
In the Vendée Globe's namesake department, the event is much more than an ocean race: it's a matter of pride, sharing and emotion. This tenth edition, unprecedented in terms of the number of participants and media coverage, has brightened the winters of the local people, who have thrilled alongside…
Adélie, the mascot of the Vendée Globe since this 10th edition, is a species of penguin living in Antarctica. Recently, a lost and disorientated Adélie penguin was found on the coast of New Zealand, a long way from its natural habitat. This is not an isolated case: Antarctic birds are sometimes…
The 10th edition of the Vendée Globe ends on an exceptional note, from a sporting, popular and media point of view. The level of competition has never been so high: Charlie Dalin, the great winner of this anniversary edition, smashed the event record by more than 9 days! The public, as ever,…
Meet Actress: Let's go back in time and try to dig deeper into one such top actress who ruled the late 60s and 70s with her impeccable acting chops and beauty.
She made her debut in 1964 release Haqeeqa, directed by Chetan Anand, elder brother of superstar Dev Anand and Vijay Anand. What followed was 'Heer Raanjha' in 1970, opposite actor Raaj Kumar. The movie was a massive hit.
Chetan Anand's sons Ketan Anand and Vivek Anand along with their employees Mala Choudhary and Ashok Chinnaswamy were charged with her murder. The motive behind her killing was reported to be the rights to her inheritance of Chetan Anand's property.
The four accused were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2002 but they were granted bail in November 2002. In 2011, the Bombay High Court agreed to hear the appeals filed by the accused duo against the trial court's order.

Leave condolences here - Flamm Funeral Home
passed away due to congestive heart failure on January 31
Valene was born the youngest of six children in South Weber
1929 to Jasper Seaman Taggart and Cecil June (Thompson) Taggart and at the age of one
Her early years were spent on a family farm complete with dairy cows
chickens and draft horses that were used to plow fields
It was during these years that she determined that boys had more fun than girls and became a certified tomboy
After a straw stack fire burned down most of the farm
the family moved to the town of Aberdeen where her father worked in the potato industry
It was at this time in 2nd Grade that Valene met the funnest and funniest boy in the class named Leo Heer
The future would prove this friendship to be extremely fortunate for both of them
her mother fell ill to tuberculosis of the spine and was sent to Salt Lake City where she was confined to a hospital bed
Utah each summer and stay with relatives so that she could visit her mother in the hospital
her mother developed cancer and passed away when Valene was 17
Valene lived with two of her married sisters and her Senior year
with the family of the Aberdeen School Superintendent
She supported herself during these years with a job at the Aberdeen Sweet Shop and working behind the lunch counter at T&K’s Grocery
Her high school years were filled with basketball
drill team and tumbling but her favorite activity was anything that involved her growing love for singing
American Legion events and other community events all provided her with many opportunities to share and hone her beautiful voice and this became a life-long love
Another life-long love began to develop with her school friend Leo Heer
He was the Class President in high school and this is when they began a more serious relationship
Idaho to attend the University of Idaho and Valene went to Pocatello
One year apart was all it took to convince the two of them that they needed to spend the rest of their lives together and they were married in Pocatello
When Leo later joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
their marriage was solemnized and their family was sealed in 1960 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple
They settled on the Heer family farm where Leo worked on the farm and Valene kept house in a tiny 10’ x 30’ hired man’s house
was that the outhouse for the entire farm was just across the road from them in the orchard
Illinois so that Leo could attend and graduate from Coyne Electrical School
Idaho where Leo accepted a position at Idaho Potato Starch
a job for Leo at Westinghouse at the new National Reactor Testing Station meant that Valene got her first real home in the small village of Ammon
Idaho and the family grew to nine with their seven children
The friends and relationships that she developed over the next 20+ years on Avocet Drive in the Ammon LDS 2nd Ward would last a lifetime
These years provided her with countless opportunities to sing at church functions
community events and even multiple years on top of the announcer’s perch at the War Bonnet Roundup dressed as the Statue of Liberty belting out The Star-Spangled Banner
Her accompaniment was a 33-rpm record of the orchestral arrangement played by Leo through the announcer’s microphone
A change in employment for Leo in 1969 took him to Rexburg
Idaho as General Manager of Intermountain Block and Pipe
After driving every day on the old two-lane highway for three years
the decision was made to move the family to Rexburg to a home on West 1st South across the street from the baseball diamond in Porter Park
1974 would bring the final family move to West Main Street in Rexburg and the wonderful home that Valene loved to call her own for the remainder of her earthly journey
This move happened just prior to the Teton Dam Flood in June of 1976 and after the clean-up and repairs
she was able to re-decorate her home in the colors and style that she had always dreamed of complete with powder blue carpet and 3D wall treatments
Valene spent a lifetime of service to others as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as such
Her favorites were any that involved her love of music and included Ward Chorister
Relief Society Stake Chorister and numerous performances as a soloist and in groups
Another of her favorite assignments was as a Temple Worker with her husband in both the Idaho Falls Temple and later in the Rexburg Temple for over a decade
She also opened her home in later years to five of her grandchildren who came from Denmark to Idaho and attended high school at Madison High School
She was happy to do this because she felt a sense of gratitude to the people who gave her a home to live in all the years her mother was in the hospital in Utah
Valene is survived by six of her seven children including Garth (Eveonne Christensen) Heer
Douglas (Julie England) Heer and Patrice (Knud) Mogensen
Her life was also blessed with 31 grandchildren
51 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren
Valene was preceded in death by her husband Leo
Dorothy (Jack) Dahle and brothers Lyle (Leila) Taggart and Lynne (Ethel) Taggart as well as a granddaughter

WHAT THE SKIPPERS SAID (23/40) : From Zurich
and so hoping to be the first Swiss-German skipper to finish the Vendée Globe
non-stop round the world race since he was very young
After a fledgling career in business in the Far East he chose to follow his dreams after the premature passing of his sailing mad father
LISTEN TO OLIVER'S PODCAST
joined Alex Thomson Racing as a nipper and rose through the ranks to be ultimately become responsible for Hugo Boss up to and after the start of the last Vendée Globe
And while he had been wrestling with the idea of setting up his own challenge it was only when he was delivering Thomson’s boat back to the UK
after the British skipper had retired into Cape Town last time
that Thomson advised him to take the plunge and go for it. His qualifying route to get to the start line has seen several setbacks
A collision at the start of the Route du Rhum meant he had to stop into Lorient to repair his boat and set off some five days later
And on this Spring’s The Transat his boat was knocked down which caused a major power failure meaning he had to limp to the finish many days after his rivals spending hours hand steering
But he proved himself on the New York Vendée race and so will now complete his ‘boat captain to solo Vendée Globe skipper’ journey when he lines up on Sunday 10th November.
Your journey to get here has been touch and go at times…
although only due really to late developments
and we struggled to find a budget but at the end we gave ourselves the aim of taking part in the Vendee Globe with a boat which is prepared
with a good team in the background and a title sponsor on the boat and this has all come to fruition
so I’m actually quite happy and proud to be here.
They always say it’s harder to get to the start line
That’s a bigger challenge than actually completing the race.
people only really see the romantic side of the story which is just going sailing
The other two thirds it’s tough business and it’s definitely a big challenge to actually get to the start of the race
And so now I can’t wait to set off on what my wife Theresa calls my ‘sailing holiday.’
Talk to us little bit about the real downtimes
How many points have you thought ‘I’m not going to make it’
To the outside I was always very confident and full of energy and optimism that we’d get to the start
but I think I’d definitely be lying if I said that was always the way I was thinking inside of me
There were definitely times where we had big question marks about whether we would make it
be it selection and qualification-wise or from a financial perspective
You have had numerous problems on big races like the Route du Rhum and The Transat for example
but in fact how has your actual sailing performance changed or improved over the last two years
I am now very confident that I can pretty much deal with anything that a race can throw at me
I would say I haven’t had a particularly easy two and a half years behind me but I always managed to a) achieve my ultimate goal and b) to get the boat and myself back to land safely
This gives me a lot of confidence to tackle the Vendée Globe especially the Southern Ocean
From that perspective and from learning from the experiences you’ve had
what are you taking with you in terms of spares that maybe others are not or what contingencies do you have in place
‘you don’t lose a race because of an extra 10kg of spares
you might as well take it.’ If I can’t with clarity say ‘no I don’t need this’ then it’s most likely a wise decision to take it
And then it’s not just the decision of the spares
it’s the critical equipment of the boat that tends to cause problems and then we have a bit of
it’s just wise to take as many things as you can.
Getting that final piece of the budget in place
what difference did that make in terms of performance
being able to buy things like sails?
So on the rigging side it’s all a complete new base
And then from the electronic side we have new batteries
The whole power generation side has been changed completely and last winter we changed all the B & G systems and pilots etc so really all the systems on board have all been replaced in ‘24.
And the boat which was launched as Gitana originally knows its way around the race course.
After Gitana not finishing with Loick Peyron in 2008-9 (he was dismasted when leading)
it was Jean Le Cam’s boat in the race 2012
Then it was Fabrice Amadeo’s finishing the race in 2016
And then it was Romain Attanasio’s finishing the race 2020
The boat has a good record. The structural part of the boat I think is pretty much bulletproof.
And how do you think you’ll deal with the loneliness
I can’t with certainty say how I’ll react because I haven’t ever been isolated for that long
I know from my time how important the mental side of the training is and performance and I have been working with the same mental performance coach for the last two and a half years and he’s great help and we try to visualise in our sessions together how it will be being alone on
I’m confident that I have got enough resilience
The trials and tribulations you’ve been through
they say ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’
Sailing is constant problem solving and I think in every problem or every negative experience
there are also so many positives you pull out of it
So whenever I had one of my rather difficult moments at sea
in the debrief afterwards I always tried to find the positives and say ok
it might actually be a good thing because of that in these experiences we also base our decisions of what we change on the boat and where we do upgrades and stuff
I’ll always pull the positives out of negatives.
When you reach the points in the race where you have to detune or destress
needing to come out of the intensity of the race
I don’t carry a single book with me on the boat but I do listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts
And I’ll make sure I have occasional conversations with close family members
For me it helps you to…And audio books I like autobiographies
or business podcasts or these kinds of things I’m interested in.
Who’s the most inspiring autobiography you’ve read recently or you’ve listened to at sea?
it might not necessarily be an autobiography but the Diary of a CEO with Steven Bartlett
He is holding a lot of inspiring conversations with inspiring people.
On the race course who will be your benchmarks or are you really looking to sail your own race?
Well from my past races I tend to sail a little bit too hard and to break the boat so I’m really trying to rein it back for the first two thirds of the race
I can not be drawn in and base my performance or how much I push based on another boat’s performance
But I will really try to just sail my own course
Every now and then I tell myself that it’s just a long
I think there are some boats that are very close to my boat like Seb Marsset is on my sister ship
I would also be interested to see how I do against Manu Cousin on my sister ship but he’s done a lot of upgrades to it
And then all the daggerboards boats I think it will be like almost a race within a race
What are your very first memories of the Vendee
I was fortunate enough that I grew up without the age of the internet so I remember the Vendee Globe as following the races in magazines but it was the early early 2000s
the Swiss contestant and I remember always just cutting out the pictures from the magazines and I put them in my room and it was full of Vendee Globe and Whitbread pictures.

The 10th edition of the Vendée Globe ends on an exceptional note
The level of competition has never been so high: Charlie Dalin
the great winner of this anniversary edition
smashed the event record by more than 9 days
When he crossed the finish of the Vendée Globe solo non-stop race around the world this Monday afternoon off Les Sables d’Olonne at 1729 hrs UTC to secure 29th place overall
Swiss German solo racer Oliver Heer fulfilled a childhood dream
one which he has harboured since growing up sailing as a youngster on Lake Zurich
But although he grew up with posters of his ocean racing idols on his wall it was only four years ago that he launched his own Vendée Globe project
Following the premature death of his sailing mad father Heer was inspired to give up a burgeoning business career in the Far East to start professional sailing in England
He rose to become boat captain for British skipper Alex Thomson
a role he held during the last Vendée Globe
Indeed it was during the delivery back from Cape Town early in 2021 on Thomson’s freshly repaired IMOCA that he was actively encouraged by the two times Vendée Globe podium finisher to move on and take on the Vendée Globe in his own right
That conversation lit the blue touch paper and after a decidedly tough two year qualification process which saw the Swiss racer only just make the cut to be included in the 40 boat line up at the start, today Heer now completes an accomplished
3 days hrs after 28th placed Antoine Cornic
In finishing the course he delivers on his sole
primary goal completing the course and thereby creates a track record that he now hopes to step up from and take on the next edition on a more competitive footing
Heer made a good start but then – in something of a foretaste of the bad timing which was to mark his race – he hit a wind hold which his competitors slip away in front of him
He crossed the equator in 37th place after taking a two-hour penalty for a sail unloaded pre start after the authorized time cut off
In the South Atlantic, the first major problem was a flooded engine, he damaged his mainsail before the keel ram issue appeared
As he rounded the Cape of Good Hope he celebrated his first Great Cape moment with a cigar and a sip of whisky
In the heart of the Pacific he saw an iceberg as he passed near Point Nemo
he started to relay his feelings about the enormity of the challenge he has taken on
Then comes Cape Horn an iconic landmark that he has dreamed of since his sailing trips on an Optimist on Lake Zurich and read about in all the ocean racing books and magazines he devoured as a youngster
Heer long since proved his determination and resilience
After a collision with another IMOCA hours after the start of the 2022 Route du Rhum he had to stop into Lorient to make a significant composite repair
He restarted five days later and still went on to finish within the time limit to step up the qualification ladder
And earlier this year on the Transat CIC race from Lorient to New York he was knocked flat and suffered a full electronics failure which then required him to hand steer for many hours each day to ensure he finished the race which was an essential stepping stone to Vendée Globe qualification
And so Heer completes a major personal achievement today
a fitting legacy to his late father and a reward for his sheer determination and will to succeed
whilst bringing a new group of mainly Swiss German sponsors and fans with him on his remarkable journey from accomplished technician-boat captain to Vendée Globe finisher.
Oliver gets a little too close to a calm zone
and Tut Gut is 36th as he approaches Cape Verde
The Swiss sailor had unloaded a sail from his boat after the time limit to do so without prior authorization from Race Management
Releases his weather buoy in the South Atlantic
Rounding the Cape of Good Hope in 33rd position
celebrated with a cigar and a sip of whisky
He breaks a batten of his mainsail and has a problem with his keel ram
The anticyclone sets in and pins Tut Gut in place… Tough on the nerves
"I've always dreamed of rounding this Cape
ever since I started sailing an Optimist on Lake Zurich..
If he manages to hoist the 300 m2 of fabric on board
and he sees his rivals behind him overtaking him..
A twisted lazyjack block has damaged the mainsail and so Oliver has to climb the mast to fix it and repair the small mainsail hole
Second crossing back across the equator in 30th position
"Don't wait for everything to be perfect to be happy"
Finish Les Sables d’Olonne in 29th position

and we were at least able to cut it by 10 million Swiss francs
of course happened before we had proof that UNRWA is really supporting the terrorists
that they are teaching in school hatred against Jews and glorifying terrorism
And we hope that there will be a change in Swiss parliament and that we will have in the future a majority to cut the funding and maybe to replace UNRWA – to replace it by another organization
And we hope that cooperation with Israel and other Arabic speaking countries could replace this organization
and I think we have also to be able to speak with people from other countries
And I’m also a member of the Council of Europe
We hope that we also can make pressure from the side of the Council of Europe that this organization will be abolished

Linda retired from a 38-year career in medical office management
where she provided for her family and demonstrated her unique ability to care for the sick and suffering among us
She worked for a prominent Joliet surgeon for many years before establishing her own medical coding business
quietly observant of the nature and needs of those she loved
She served her family with a brimming love that bonded them together in safety and tenderness
With the wisdom gained from her storied life
she offered a haven for her loved ones to share their joys and sorrows
where she – frequently covered in a fine dusting of confectioners sugar – baked incredible treats with a gift for timing and taste
always delivering the favorites of her family and friends
from live concerts to garage jam sessions to her favorite tunes on the radio
As a frequent passenger on Raul’s Harley-Davidson
charming the tough and burly motorcycle crowd with her soft and sweet presence
Her favorite place was anywhere her family was
though she held the Mississippi River in Bellevue
She enjoyed many peaceful camping trips there
and more recently with Raul and their grandson
calling themselves "The Three River Rats."
Linda’s heart and soul always lay with her family
as a teenager and shared an incredible love story with her “Mr
she led her family as the caregiver for her parents
She made her children the cornerstone of her life
selflessly loving and cherishing Tawnie and Armando with patience and pride
C" and "Mama Cisneros," and she welcomed one and all into her home and her heart
The greatest joy of her later life was Hudson
she instilled in him her unshakeable sense of wonder
This incomparable woman defined grace and indomitable spirit in a world that needs both
Please join our family in honoring her legacy during a visitation at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, New Lenox, on Saturday, November 4, from 1-4 p.m. All are welcome to stay for a memorial service at 4 p.m., which will also be live streamed at https://www.asimplestreaming.com/lccisneros

A discussion of Garry Wills’s 1982 book on the Kennedy family
In this episode, Matt and Sam welcome the Nation’s Jeet Heer to the podcast to continue their journey into the work of Garry Wills—in particular
The Kennedy Imprisonment: A Meditation on Power
The book might be thought of as a sequel to his earlier Nixon Agonistes (1970)
As Wills puts it in his introduction to the most recent edition of The Kennedy Imprisonment
but an attempt to see what could be learned about America from the way Nixon attracted or repelled his fellow countrymen
Why not do the same thing for the Kennedys?”
The result of Wills’s efforts is a devastating portrait of an Irish-Catholic family who strove to be accepted at the most rarified heights of American society—and then
used his money and influence to create a series of myths surrounding his sons
most of all the son who would become president
It is these myths at which Wills takes aim
showing how Joseph Kennedy bought his second son good press
And it was Joseph Kennedy who taught his sons what was expected of them as men: to use and dominate women (many
and to understand power as enlightened leadership by the best and brightest (most of all
not as harnessing the popular energy of mass movements
What begins as a book exposing the Kennedy men as wannabe aristocrats bent on conquest
ends as an indictment of the liberalism they came to represent

It was with a huge measure of relief that the Swiss German solo skipper Oliver Heer brought his Transat CIC solo race across the North Atlantic from Lorient to New York to a satisfactory conclusion today at 22:19:32hrs UTC (18:19:32hrs local time NYC)
finishing in 25th place and keeping alive his hopes of qualifying for this year’s Vendée Globe
There were times when I was not sure we would make it
there is always a way to get the boat to the finish line
some of them about redundancy but we will debrief in a couple of days.” Smiled a delighted Heer who now faces a 100 miles upwind sail to Newport
Heer’s IMOCA Oliver Heer Ocean Racing was knocked down when his autopilot failed and his boat made a massive
Hit by a big wave he was all but rolled in 40kt winds and big seas
Unable to power his autopilots with 1300 miles to the finish of the 3500 miles course he spent six days glued to the helm
taking only cat naps trying to fight his way towards New York
At one point he was so tired he fell asleep for five hours straight
After a rig failure early in last year’s Transat Jacques Vabre forced him out of that two-handed race to Martinique meaning he also missed the solo IMOCA race back to Lorient
Heer needed to finish this historic race across the North Atlantic to keep his hopes of qualifying for his first Vendée Globe alive
more than six days and seven hours after 24th placed Belgian Denis Van Weynbergh
Heer is determined to have his boat and damaged sails repaired on time to compete on the return race to the Vendée which starts 29th May
“I went through a nightmare.” Said Heer as he finished
“For six days I just had to be glued to the helm
At some 1300 miles from the finish I was in a very
He was knocked down on the night of May 5th whilst racing in winds of 35-40kts and big seas
it took him several days to be able to rig up a rudimentary power system
his solar panels feeding his engine battery to allow him to use his autopilot
But it was only after a discussion with his mental preparation coach who advised him to literally ‘embrace the shit’ and devote his energy only to solving his many problems rather than waste his mental energy on emotions such as anger
“When I was knocked down here I still had 1300 miles to go with no power at all and some very serious weather to contend with
I was at the nav station when suddenly the pilot went into a Chinese gybe
full ballast it puts you over quite quickly
And then a big wave hit me and put me over even more
I looked on my log files (later) and I was at 128 degrees heel
Worst of it was that after 10 seconds I had a complete blackout
I flew across the inside of the boat and have a badly bruised elbow and sore neck
The first 24 hours then were full crisis mode
I had no power and somehow had to get the sails down safely
so I really struggled getting it furled and there is a lot of damage.”
“I was then licking my wounds for a day or two
Then I managed to set up this basic electrical system
the most basic important things to run with my solar panels feeding the engine battery
And so when I had sun I could run the most important things on the boat
But up there on the Grand Banks it is grey
The first couple of days I could do nothing much
I had no AIS and I was in the shipping lane and I saw ships around me and so that was not vey nice either
but the boat has some sail damage specifically.”
It was the first time on a sailing boat I just did know what to do or how to do it
His core message was ‘Ollie there is no other option you have to …embrace the shit
embrace it.’ And also I had a couple of thousand litres of water in the boat
And he said ‘look Ollie you just have to embrace this
any other way you are wasting your mental energy and you need all of it
I wrote in on the wall inside the boat and got on with it
I had to prioritize all the work I had to do on the boat.”
Heer says he reached rock bottom and struggled to emerge from a dark place “It was such chaos after the incident
it was just overwhelming to consider all the jobs
He said ‘embrace it’ and then prioritise the most important things
make a list such as make water – I was almost out of drinking water
I started to try and wire up the autopilot
and so I slowly started to work through the jobs
It took me a couple of days with every job I ticked off it became more and more realistic I can finish the race
Once I had these jobs I said ‘Look Ollie you have a boat that works
but it is safe enough to get these 1200 miles done and get finished…”
With sunshine he had a working autopilot and regained most of his good humour
although an extra 12 hours fighting light winds to the finish line
But as soon as he reaches Newport RI tomorrow his shore team will be ready to swing into action to get the boat ready for the return race
Heer meantime was looking forwards to a delayed birthday beer and a good cup of coffee before returning to boat preparation
“The boat has many issues and problems to fix in Newport
We have quite a big team out here and I have a good friend from England who basically offered to come out and help
so the shore team already know all the jobs
I have electricians lined up and sail loft is standing by
I am very confident I’ll be on the start line for the return race but having said that I will not be in a competitive position
with the Vendée Globe selection going on it is still about making the miles and getting to the finish
So fingers crossed I will be off on my merry way to Europe again in two weeks time……”
Oliver Heer’s elapsed time for the course is 18d 10h 49m 32s and he finished 10d 3h 56m after winner Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkéa)
his average on the great circle 6.66kts his real average 8.12kts

a headline in the Chicago Tribune breathlessly announced
Makes Principals Gasp.” Ella Flagg Young
Superintendent of Chicago’s public schools
told the Tribune she thought up what she called the “duo-personal” pronouns he’er
and him’er as she walked to a meeting with school principals
I have simply solved a need that has been long impending
The English language is in need of a personal pronoun of the third person
Superintendent Young used her pronouns throughout her remarks
and after the principals recovered from their shock and confusion
and himer and encourage their teachers to teach them to students
Young’s gender-neutral pronouns made headlines as newspapers all over the country trumpeted her words
telling the Post-Dispatch that he favored generic he
“generically we are all men.”
Even stronger opposition came from George Harvey
who warned that any assault on masculine grammatical dominance signaled the end times for language:
When ‘man’ ceases to include women we shall cease to need a language
and won’t care any more about pronouns
It turns out that all the attention focused on the pronoun revolution attributed to the first woman to lead Chicago’s schools was misplaced
who had just finished a term as president of the National Education Association and later earned her doctorate studying with John Dewey at the University of Chicago
almost ten months before Young claimed the words as her own
Pond reasoned that even though the masculine pronoun was supposed to be generic
it was often awkward to use he for a woman
Pond acknowledged that his words have neither beauty nor euphony
which he also labeled “strange” and even “ludicrous,” offered an escape from the troubling absence of a third-person singular pronoun that does not refer to gender
Three days after the Tribune’s announcement drew national attention
is the inventor of the new pronoun.” According to stories in the Chicago Examiner (Jan
Young admitted that Pond had written to her about his coinage several months earlier
and that she used the pronouns at the principals meeting to lighten the tone her speech
Perhaps fearing a charge of plagiarism along with criticism for tampering with English
“I want to be set right in this matter
I don’t want to be accused of stealing anybody’s thunder.”
Edit embedded media in the Files Tab and re-insert as needed
Smoking gun: Young tells the Chicago Examiner (above) and the Live Stock World (below) that she did not invent the pronouns after all
Superintendent Young changed her story yet again to claim some of the credit for the new pronouns
Young told the New York Sun that she and Pond had co-authored the words:
Pond of Chicago and myself had talked over the duo pronoun before I ever mentioned it
Pond and myself agreed there was need for a terse form of mentioning the third person without identifying that person by gender
It’s true that Pond’s initial announcement went largely unnoticed until Young publicized the words as her own
But we are now left with four versions of the birth of heer
Two of these explanations are true: Pond did indeed coin the pronouns
One is a lie: Young did not think up the pronouns “in an instant” on the way to a meeting one cold Chicago day
And one bends the truth: Young may have been a pronoun publicist
many people proposed a gender-neutral pronoun that blended he with she
who called herself “a progressive teacher,” came up with hesh
long before the compound occurred to either Pond or Young
But Young never explained the multiple positions she took on pronoun authorship
and she ended her Sun interview by suggesting that anyway
it’s not really important who came up with heer
since neither she nor Pond could single-handedly reform the pronoun system
But instead of showcasing the new pronouns in her latest explanation
no matter how exalted his or her station may be
is qualified to make a part of the language without the aid of others
Since none of us is custom or law unto himself
what right has one to foist upon us some word
The lexicographer Isaac Funk told the New York Times on January 12 that he didn’t like these new pronouns
he just preferred the gender-neutral pronoun thon
But Funk grudgingly acknowledged that Young’s pronouns had some merit:
New words as a rule are very grudgingly admitted to good society
Funk quickly admitted these untested new words to good society by putting them in the 1913 edition of Funk and Wagnalls Standard Dictionary
Rather than crediting either Pond or Young as the coiner of the new pronouns
and himer with authorship claims from both
There’s this citation from a letter that Fred Pond sent to Funk dated February 8
As illustrative of the elimination of our present awkwardness and often incorrect use of the English language
has a style of diction peculiarly hiser own (or hisern) which distinguishes himer from all others.”
And this one from the January 7 Chicago Tribune story that attributes the pronouns to Ella Flagg Young:
A principal should so conduct his’er school that all pupils are engaged in something that is profitable to him’er
Dictionaries record words both new and old
and himer in your Funk and Wagnalls until the dictionary ceased publication in the 1950s
Once in a while someone tried to revive Converse’s thon
and today gender-free coinages such as E (created in 1841)
zie (1891) and hir (1920) are gaining some traction
or nonbinary pronoun remains singular they
which has been the go-to pronoun for English speakers and writers in both formal and informal contexts since the fourteenth century.
—If you'd like to learn more about the history of gender pronouns, pick up a copy of my new book, What's your pronoun? Beyond he and she, available from Liveright/W.W. Norton here, or wherever you buy or borrow books
As a non-binary person in the 21st century
it's incredible to see the use of neo-pronouns and using pronouns to challenge a set gender hierarchy in the early 20th century
People have been challenging gender for as long as its existed
