The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has ruled the result of Heerenveen’s 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard will stand — despite the visitors briefly having 12 players on the pitch
managed by former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie
were leading 2-1 late in the Eredivisie game when Fortuna made a double substitution
but only one of their on-field players left the pitch and the officials failed to recognise the additional player
Fortuna won a throw-in and while the discrepancy was then finally spotted after around 22 seconds
they would directly then earn a corner from which they equalised
Despite Van Persie calling for the goal to be ruled out and the game to be restarted with Heerenveen 2-1 ahead
the nation’s football authorities have ruled that the draw will stand
a Dutch team played with 12 and it has caused chaos
“The conclusion is that the incorrect administrative/organisational decision of the officiating did not have a decisive influence on the final result of the match,” the KNVB said
it was decided that the match was played and ended in a 2-2 draw.”
The KNVB had previously described the situation as “very unpleasant and extremely messy” and they would request advice from the International Football Association Board (IFAB — the organisation that sets global football’s laws) on how they should handle it
Heerenveen head coach Van Persie said he expected a resolution “to be to our advantage” and added: “In my opinion
the fairest solution is that we continue playing at 2-1 and then give the ball to the goalkeeper.”
There were four matches in the Eredivisie on Sunday and below is a round up of all the action
Willem II made it 8 losses in a row as they were defeated by Fortuna Sittard in Limburg
The visitors needed to win to have any realistic chance of avoiding the relegation playoffs but after 61 minutes they fell behind
A cross from Jesper Dahlhaus was netted by Ezequiel Bullaude
Fortuna had chances to kill the game but they couldn’t and it seemed that Willem II had rescued a point when Yousuf Sylla netted
Fortuna Sittard are ninth and still in the race for Europe while Willem II are almost guaranteed to finish 16th
A penalty was enough to secure all three points for Heerenveen and their European playoff place is almost guaranteed
Heerenveen had the better of the first half but they could not find the net and just before the break
Kento Shiogai almost put NEC ahead but shot over
Ion Nicolaescu made it 1-0 from the penalty spot for Heerenveen after Luuk Brouwers was brought down in the box
Marcus Linday then had a goal disallowed as Heerenveen hung on for the three points which sees them sit eighth
With a five point gap to 10th it seems they have secured a European playoff spot
Youri Regeer netted a 97th minute equaliser as Ajax rescued a point against Sparta Rotterdam
The title seems to be on its way to Amsterdam and a win on Sunday would have put Ajax nine points clear
Ajax were sloppy and the best chances of the first half fell to Sparta
Both Mitchell van Bergen and Shunsuke Mito couldn’t convert
Ajax improved in the second half with the introduction of Wout Weghorst
Kenneth Taylor also hit the post as Ajax had several chances to break the deadlock
The woodwork was keeping the hosts out as Youri Regeer hit the bar from close range
while Weghorst’s header deflected onto the upright shortly afterward
Ajax goalkeeper Matheus caught a backpass and Sparta got an indirect free kick in the box
Mohamed Nassoh scored and Sparta seemed to secure an unlikely win
Ajax managed to equalise though as Youri Regeer reacted quickly in the box to net and it could be a crucial point gained
Ajax have three games left to play and cannot afford many more mistakes should PSV keep winning
Go Ahead Eagles failed to move into sixth spot after being held to a 0-0 draw by Almere City
Go Ahead Eagles are only playing for pride at this moment as they have already secured a Europa League spot after winning the KNVB Cup
Almere City were trying to keep their faint hopes of survival alive and they had a number of chances in the first half
James Lawrence did have the ball in the net for Almere City but it was ruled out for offside
Victor Edvardsen then had the ball in the net for the visitors but it was also disallowed for a foul
Almere City are 17th but still four points adrift of Willem II

SC Heerenveen faced Fortuna Sittard at the Abe Lenstra Stadion
The match showcased moments of exuberance and confusion
particularly with the late equalizer by Fortuna Sittard
which left both teams grappling with the outcomes
with Levi Smans netting the opener just three minutes after kickoff; his shot deflected off Ryan Fosso
catching the goalkeeper Luuk Koopmans off guard
Coach Robin van Persie’s strategy seemed effective
especially with new signing Milos Lukovic making his first start alongside Ilias Sebaoui
who had been under scrutiny for unfortunate penalties
Fortuna Sittard leveled the playing field through Kristoffer Peterson
who converted from the penalty spot after Sebaoui’s ill-timed foul inside the area
Heerenveen maintained their offensive approach
with Alireza Jahanbakhsh nearly scoring just before halftime
The second half featured numerous opportunities for Heerenveen
but it was the debuting 17-year-old Eser Gürbüz who brought the crowd to life
Gürbüz scored the potential winning goal from a cross from Jahnbakhsh and just ten minutes remaining
Fortuna’s Rodrigo Guth found the net during stoppage time
stemming from a corner created after chaotic substitutions which saw Fortuna fielding 12 players momentarily
TEHRAN - Alireza Jahanbakhsh joined SC Heerenveen with immediate effect
The 31-year-old winger has joined the Eredivisie side on a free transfer after his contract with Feyenoord expired last summer
Jahanbakhsh signed a contract until the summer of 2025 and will play in Friesland with shirt number 30
Jahanbakhsh has previously played for Brighton & Hove Albion and AZ and NEC
He also has 89 international matches for Iran national football team

Robin van Persie's coaching debut ended in defeat on Sunday as Heerenveen lost their opening game of the new season in the Netherlands at Ajax Amsterdam
A goal from Kristian Hlynsson was enough to send Heerenveen home without any points and leave the former Dutch international striker, who played at Arsenal and Manchester United
feeling they had missed out on an opportunity
there might have been more in it," Van Persie told television reporters afterwards
We had hoped that one of them would have gone in and created a bit more belief
you could see our intentions but we didn't really create any chances."
That is what he said he would work on for the next game
"We are going to face FC Utrecht next week in high spirits.
"With this way of playing, I cannot promise that we will win every match, but in terms of intensity and sometimes also quality, this is football as I think you should play it. We will show that every week," he added.
The 41-year-old Van Persie, who scored 50 goals in 102 internationals for the Netherlands, was part of Feyenoord's coaching staff as an assistant and youth team coach after he retired from playing in 2020, before joining Heerenveen.
They will play their first home match of the season against Utrecht on Saturday.

Sc-heerenveen.nl – HEERENVEEN, Alireza Jahanbakhsh is added to the selection of sc Heerenveen. The 31-year-old attacker comes transfer-free to the club after his contract with Feyenoord expired last summer.
Jahanbakhsh signs a contract until the summer of 2025 and will play in Fryslan with jersey number 30.
With the arrival of Jahanbakhsh, sc Heerenveen adds the necessary experience to the selection. Until last season he was under contract with Feyenoord, and previously he played for Brighton & Hove Albion, AZ and NEC. He also won 89 internationals for Iran, in which he scored seventeen times.
“Alireza is a player with depth, variation in his game and the necessary international experience,” said Ferry de Haan, general manager. “He has qualities that we can use in our selection. We are happy to be able to count on him until the end of the season.”

supporters of [insert team you support here] — may feel aggrieved at recent refereeing decisions
but at least you haven’t had to play against 12 men
That’s unless you’re a supporter of Dutch side Heerenveen
who were on the wrong end of one of football’s most basic rules being flagrantly breached during their top-flight match against Fortuna Sittard at the weekend
Visitors Fortuna made a late double substitution with Heerenveen — now managed by legendary former Dutch striker Robin van Persie — 2-1 up
But only one of the players getting replaced actually left the field
the 12 men of Fortuna won a throw-in and from that
albeit after the error was spotted and rectified
Referee Erwin Blank certainly drew a blank when it came to counting how many footballers were on the field — and the fallout could be substantial
with Van Persie calling for the goal to be ruled out and his team awarded the win
The KNVB (the Netherlands’ football federation) is even asking the International Football Association Board (IFAB — the organisation that sets global football’s laws) for advice on what it should do about it
Here’s how events unfolded at the Abe Lenstra stadium on Saturday night…
With just over two minutes of the 90 left and chasing an equaliser
Fortuna coach Danny Buijs makes a double substitution
On come Owen Johnson (No 30) and Darijo Grujcic (No 5)
There are two Fortuna players (in between Johnson and Grujcic’s heads in the screengrab below) jogging towards the touchline as if they are the ones being replaced
Edouard Michut (No 20) is the first player off
but as he does so there’s some loud shouting from the Fortuna bench which grabs his attention
Ryan Fosso (No 80) does leave the field and heads for a place on the visitors’ bench
But Michut is turned around and sent back into the fray by a member of the Fortuna backroom staff
Fortuna have restarted the game with 11 outfield players plus goalkeeper Luuk Koopmans
who is out of shot in our next grab — utilising the rarely-seen 3-4-4 formation…
They now win a throw-in deep inside the Heerenveen half
Please note the position from which this is initially taken
Around 22 seconds after Fortuna started playing with 12 men
the error is now spotted and referee Blank blows his whistle
Van Persie has understandably been haranguing the fourth official
Turns out it is Fortuna’s No 8 Jasper Dahlhaus who was supposed to have been substituted in the double change and his number now goes up
leaving the pitch via the far-side touchline
now back down to the regulation 11 players — aka
the number of them football teams have used for 150 years — restart play with the previously halted throw-in
notice the position from which it is now taken (a few yards up the line than on the previous attempt)
the extra stoppage of play has given Fortuna the time to get more of their (checks notes) 11 players nearer the Heerenveen goal
which is taken by one of the recent substitutes
Rodrigo Guth plants a header past goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart to equalise
There are no further goals in seven minutes of added time
“Fortuna Sittard had 12 men on the field for a minute before that throw-in,” Van Persie stated to media outlet ESPN afterwards
he’s exaggerated that slightly but let’s forgive him
he was understandably pretty angry.) “Apparently that is allowed and possible
“Normally I never talk to referees and always let them do the job
but it can’t be that they play with 12 men
‘Shouldn’t you do something about that?’.”
When Van Persie was asked what should happen next
While the ghost player Dahlhaus didn’t touch the ball during those 22 erroneous seconds
the fact remains that Fortuna launched an attack with 12 men
from that throw they won a corner and from that corner they scored
It said in a statement: “This is a very unpleasant and extremely messy situation
“We have requested the statements about the exact events from the arbitration and the clubs
the professional football league board will take a decision.”
The Athletic has contacted the same organisation for comment
Are there precedents for this that IFAB might call upon when offering advice to the KNVB
It also happened three years ago in the German Bundesliga
when Bayern Munich had 12 players on the pitch for 17 seconds during a match at Freiburg
Bayern were 3-1 up at the time in the latter stages of the game (and eventually won 4-1). Kingsley Coman was supposed to come off during a double substitution, but the fourth official showed the wrong number on the board, leading to Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern’s manager at the time, counting players on his fingers
but the Deutsche Fussball-Bund (DFB — Germany’s football federation) judged the mistake had been made by the match officials
“The DFB sports court has decided Bayern Munich cannot be blamed for the introduction of a non-eligible player,” the DFB said at the time
“It is more down to the mistaken behaviour of the officials that a 12th man was introduced and the game continued.”
second-tier Tranmere Rovers’ shock FA Cup fourth-round win over top-flight visitors Sunderland was marred by a similar incident
had defender Clint Hill sent off in second-half stoppage time
Stephen Frail came on for them as a substitute shortly afterwards
however no other Tranmere player left the field
The BBC reported at the time: “Initially play continued — but once the officials had noticed that Tranmere still had 11 men on the pitch
with both benches embroiled in a fierce row.”
Tranmere’s then manager John Aldridge said: “There was a lot of confusion
but the fourth official showed Clint Hill’s number instead.”
Sunderland counterpart Peter Reid wasn’t happy
saying: “It was like Billy Smart’s Circus out there
I don’t like talking about officials instead of football but someone has made a major error.”
However, Sunderland rather sportingly chose not to lodge an official complaint with the FA, which 48 hours later stated that Tranmere had not “knowingly and deliberately distorted the outcome of the game” and ruled the tie did not have to be replayed
The major difference with what happened in Heerenveen on Saturday is that the scoreline and the eventual result changed so shortly after the period where Fortuna played with 12 men

The Rotterdam team put their money where their mouths were with a midweek win against FC Groningen
This put them five points behind a PSV side that just had its confidence take a big knock
To start their charge at the reigning champions, Robin van Persie’s men first had to deal with a tricky meeting with AZ in Alkmaar
Recent history leaned in Feyenoord’s favour with AZ failing to win the previous four Eredivisie games and the Rotterdam side winning the six meetings with AZ prior to Saturday’s outing
A sunny Alkmaar was the setting for a meeting between the third and fifth-placed teams of the Eredivisie
which many fans were hoping would serve up a fine bit of entertaining football
But as the Dutch saying goes, those people would come home from a cold fun fair. The match between AZ and Feyenoord left much to be desired regarding entertainment and quality. An own goal from Zico Buurmeester, who headed the ball over stand-in goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet into his own net
The own goal would account for a peculiar stat: Feyenoord became the first team in the last 15 seasons to win an Eredivisie match without recording a single shot on target
The win would also put Feyenoord within two points of PSV, who’d meet FC Groningen the same night
The Pride of the North had re-ignited a flame over the past few weeks with some positive results
which propelled them from the bottom of the packed midfield to the very top
Now defending a spot in the European football playoffs
With three wins in their previous six Eredivisie games
FC Groningen had matched their win total between August 18th and February 7th
PSV lost their hopes of a second consecutive title after winning just three Eredivisie games in 2025
Peter Bosz’s team proved early on that they’d not lost their touch as Malik Tillman, who’d returned from injury and got his first start since recovering, and Ivan Perisic helped PSV to a 2-0 lead within 30 minutes with two skillful goals
However, FC Groningen would put up a valiant fight, highlighted by the creative brain of Italian-Dutch midfielder Luciano Valente
Two weeks removed from his debut for the Dutch U21 team
Valente showcased his talent with a team-leading two created chances
Valente also accounted for the assist for Dave Kwakman’s 2-1, who curled the ball behind Walter Benitez and scored his second goal of the season
It was a fun match for 20-year-old Kwakman for more than one reason. The Volendam native played against his old neighbour, Joey Veerman
The midfielders' mothers and sisters are best friends
and it made for a lovely interview afterwards
“He was amazing today,” Veerman said about Kwakman
“I believe he got fouled about 20 times – he was really good today.”
“I’m normally not of the goals,” Kwakman said as he reacted to his goal
Smiling was Veerman’s right more than Kwakman’s after the match, as Johan Bakayoko headed in the decider in the 88th minute
PSV held onto their 5-point lead over Feyenoord after a testy win in Groningen
The home side lost control of their crucial eighth spot in the standings
which could propel Groningen into the playoffs for European football
At the top of the Eredivisie, Ajax held onto their lead as NAC Breda, one of only two teams to beat Ajax this Eredivisie season, were beaten 3-1 in Amsterdam

Kenneth Taylor, Ajax’s joint-top scorer with eight goals, stepped up and converted from the spot in the 32nd minute, two minutes before Steven Berghuis earned Ajax its first lead after a nifty combination between Konadu and Taylor
After celebrating the return of the injured Wout Weghorst, 16-year-old Jorthy Mokio wrote history by becoming Ajax's second youngest goal scorer in Eredivisie history. Mokio’s age of 16 years and 346 days has only ever been bettered by Clarence Seedorf
who was 16 years and 343 days old when he scored his first Eredivisie goal
The seven games and battles Farioli spoke about during the homecoming after the PSV match have now become six as Ajax edge closer and closer to a 37th Eredivisie title
he would not entertain any conversation about a potential title
so 18 more points to earn,” the Italian boss told ESPN after the win
which now consists of the so-called ‘Traditional Top 3’
were three of the five teams to win their games this past weekend
It meant the chasing pack had disappointing weekends
Antman is the league leader in assists and entered the game with 12 assists to his name. However, two assists in the first half increased his total to 14 in 27 games. The Finnish midfielder set up Oliver Edvardsen with his first assist in the 14th minute, before helping Mathis Suray to his goal just three minutes later
Go Ahead Eagles dominated the game and had Utrecht manager Ron Jans scrambling for help. The experienced boss decided to change his team in two positions before the 40th minute, with an irate Souffian El Karouani and Alonzo Engwanda making way for Oscar Fraulo and Kollbeinn Finnson
and the Spaniard got to finish an easy 1-on-1 with De Busser
As entertaining as the first half was from the Eagles’ side
the second half couldn’t have been more different
The two sides produced a first half with a total xGOT (xG generated by shots on target) of 2.37
whereas the second half produced a measly 0.03
Mathis Suray was the only player to come close to finishing off Utrecht
but the Belgian’s effort smashed against the crossbar
Neither team gained nor lost much with the point, especially considering the lackluster performances from rivals FC Twente and AZ. On Saturday night, Twente hosted Fortuna Sittard in a brutally cagey match in Enschede that ended 1-1
FC Twente dominated the first half against the Limburg team, but could only force a breakthrough via a penalty and Sem Steijn’s 23rd goal of the season. The ‘Tukkers’ kept Fortuna silent throughout the first half, but were left bitterly disappointed when Brazilian centre-half Rodrigo Guth earned Fortuna a point in the 92nd minute
The only other winners in the top half of the Eredivisie were sc Heerenveen. Robin van Persie’s former team played just their second match under coach Robin Veldman and dominated lowly Willem II in a 3-1 win in Frisia
Moldovan striker Ion Nicolaescu and centre-half Sam Kersten
who scored his first professional goal in his 217th game
put Heerenveen up 2-0 after 31 minutes against a toothless Willem II
The Frisians fired 15 shots at Thomas Didillon-Hodl’s goal in the first half alone
but could not continue this trampling style of football after the break
but couldn’t prevent a sixth consecutive Eredivisie loss
Heerenveen have taken Groningen’s eighth spot in the table and now possess the (current) final ticket for the playoffs for European football
Thanks to NAC Breda’s defeat in Amsterdam, Willem II’s loss would not hurt the Tilburg side too much. Who will have endured some hurt this past weekend, were RKC Waalwijk
The struggling team from the South of the Netherlands faced off against Heracles in their own Mandemakers Stadion in Waalwijk
an opponent RKC knew they’d have to beat in order to maintain the challenge for survival
The loss meant RKC would finish the week equal on points with Almere City, who produced a stellar second-half comeback to snatch a point from PEC Zwolle
The home side forgot to reward itself for a good first half and found themselves down 2-0 at the halfway point thanks to goals from Anouar El Azzouzzi and Dylan Vente
even though Almere City had generated a total xG of 1.73 – almost a whole point more than PEC’s 0.76
As Almere outperformed their opponents again after the break, Iraqi Como loanee Ali Jasim and Frenchman Junior Kadile earned the home side a well-earned point as Almere City stayed unbeaten for the third game in a row – their longest such streak in a year
The standings in the EredivisieFlashscoreWinners of the WeekAnother team that established a rare unbeaten streak were Sparta Rotterdam. Under the guidance of the returned coach Maurice Steijn, Sparta have now gone five Eredivisie games unbeaten after beating NEC Nijmegen 2-0 in Rotterdam
The home side finished the first half without a shot on goal but with the lead after Ajax loanee Kristian Hlynsson’s header hit the post, but ricocheted into the NEC goal after hitting goalkeeper Robin Roefs’ thigh
After Vito van Crooij got sent off with his second yellow card, Nokkvi Thorisson decided the game in Sparta’s favour with a thunderous shot at the near post in the 84th minute
Sparta’s fifth consecutive unbeaten game made this their best streak since early 2022
and it made Sparta jump from 15th to 12th in the table
From relegation terrors to fighting for a ticket for the European playoffs – Sparta Rotterdam are beating every friend’s and foe’s wildest expectations
Knowing Willem II are in terrible shape and with a winnable game at hand
RKC Waalwijk failed to do themselves a huge favour in the fight against relegation
A dreary 0-0 draw could’ve been turned into a win on several occasions
were it not for a black-and-white or even divine intervention to keep RKC five points adrift from safety
German full-back Jannes Wieckhoff saved Heracles with a truly fantastic intervention at the far post
whilst Oskar Zawada made every footballer’s worst dream come true by missing a sitter in the second half
It could’ve been the goal which got RKC within touching distance of Willem II
but the difference to their noisy neighbours remains five points with just six games remaining
With not too many truly eye-catching goals having been scored this past weekend
Sam Kersten made his professional debut for second division club FC Den Bosch as an 18-year-old in December 2016, but never scored at the professional level. Even at the youth level for Jong Brabant United
When a rebound fell exactly his way against Willem II
Kersten did what could only have felt unnatural to the defender: he scored his first goal in his 208th professional league game
but it made sense: “It even surprised me,” Kersten told ESPN after the match

Ajax and Feyenoord both deliver two players to this week's Top XI. Steven Berghuis (1 goal, 8 crosses, 23 passes in the final third) and Kenneth Taylor (1 goal, 1 assist, 3 created chances) were crucial in Ajax's 3-1 win over NAC Breda, while Gernot Trauner (4 interceptions, 10 clearances) and Timon Wellenreuther (5 saves
clean sheet) earned their team a hard-fought win over AZ
Malik Tillman (1 goal, 12 duels won, 5 tackles won) is the sole PSV player in the line-up, while Mathis Suray, Jannes Wieckhoff, and Mike Eerdhuijzen represent Go Ahead Eagles
Suray accounted for the 2-0 besides 3 shots on target
while Jannes Wieckhoff stole the show with his defensive heroics (5 tackles

PEC Zwolle has Sunday afternoon against SC Heerenveen
The Zwolle team took the lead thanks to a goal by Dylan Vente
Alireza Jahanbakhsh made in the second half equal for the team of Robin van Persie
PEC Zwolle against SC Heerenveen was the match between the number thirteen and number eleven
For both teams the ideal chance of climbing to the left row
Although there are more hijackers on the coast: the gap between 15 and eight is only three points
Dylan Vente set PEC Zwolle on course early
who played for the suspended Filip Krastev
kept the overview and gave the ball on Vente
He scored his tenth league goal of the season
What followed was a first half in which both teams had the necessary opportunities
First Linday was dangerous for the Frisians
on which PEC from the counter was threatening
Vente just did not get the ball behind Van der Hart again
the Zwolle team failed to maintain the threat of the first half
That sc Heerenveen made 1-1 a quarter of an hour after the break was therefore not surprising
