Brabantsdag Heeze is a complete experience, with a well-filled programme around the highlight, the largest theatre parade of the year.
From 11.00 hours you can enjoy (street) theatre and music along the route and on the Sfeerpleinen. As soon as the towering theatre parade passes, the programme stops.
Brabantsedag Heeze is the place where culture, music, and theater come together in a vibrant event on a Sunday in August. Starting at 11 AM, Heeze is transformed into a lively cultural hub. The theater parade is, of course, the highlight of the day, but before and after there is plenty to experience in the Pearl of Brabant.
Before the sixteen impressive parade floats fill the streets of Heeze, the pre-parade already creates a fantastic atmosphere. Along the route, spectators are thoroughly entertained by various acts such as Close Act Theatre with I Puppets, TukkersConnexion Classic Rally Ride, The Italians, The Timecruisers from Abacus Theatre, Luc Vaesen ‘The Peddler’, and Brigadier Bob Jeroen Engeln. These acts provide excitement and thrill as the audience gathers and prepares for the theater parade.

2023 Instead of worrying about energy bills
how would it feel to live in a house that is energy positive
That is what is on offer in the picturesque village of Heeze, just outside Eindhoven, where developer Ballast Nedam is building the country’s most sustainable – yet still affordable – homes
Natuurrijk is a small development of 82 properties in rural Heeze (pronounced “hay-ze”)
just 20 minutes by car or train from the bustle of the big city
combining the charm of an authentic village with the proximity of Eindhoven’s facilities
All the homes in the development are being built with solar panels and green techniques
with prices ranging from an affordable €250,000 to around €800,000 for a large detached house
But eight of the properties will be extra special
and an open outlook on beautiful woods and fields nearby
it’s possible to build very sustainably,” says Rosa Bos
a real estate developer with Ballast Nedam
“These will be the most sustainable terraced houses in the Netherlands: more than 90% bio-based
This kind of thing doesn’t often come to the market
The sale of these properties will start soon
building will start in 2024 and the development will be finished in 2025
and the houses will generate as much energy as they use.”
Eindhoven, which is a magnet for new technology firms and a host of internationals coming to the Netherlands, is promoting new housing with the help of a €75 million state budget for 3160 homes
Another appealing real-estate development in Eindhoven is Berckelbosch – inspired by the Dutch word for “birch tree” – built for both local tastes and expat appeal
Just 10 minutes from the city centre, but still bordering on a new park and beautiful nature, Berckelbosch is a new neighbourhood of classic 1930s-style houses
complete with solar panels and modern features
have already won an award for nature-inclusive design
preserving the tree structure of the area so that while the houses feel new
New-build houses such as these are particularly attractive for expats
“Estate agents can help people who aren’t familiar with the process of buying in the Netherlands
There’s no overbidding and you can have your house made as you want it
“You also won’t have any maintenance surprises – because in an old house you might well find all the pipes need replacing or the woodwork is rotten and the costs for a plumber in the Netherlands can almost be as high as for a lawyer!”
There are no restrictions on renting out these properties – unlike in other cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam – so even if an international left the Netherlands
it should be possible for them to switch to a buy-to-let mortgage and keep the house as an investment
And even if a new house doesn’t have a history
the door is open for the buyer to make it part of their own story
“The Eindhoven city poet Iris Penning has written a poem,” says Bos
“and on a bench in front of each house

The whole village of Heeze (10 km from Eindhoven) is a living stage for the day
The theme of the 62nd Brabantsedag is ‘What moves Brabanders?’
This question has been haunting many a Heezenaar since the announcement of the theme in November last year
After the first designs and sketches at the beginning of this year
the icing is now being put on the cake in the construction season
The Brabantsedag parade is the largest in the Netherlands and is visited yearly by around 30.000 people
the sixteen float groups will take their audience on a journey through the former Duchy of Brabant: on the hunt
on the run or on the winding path of life of Vincent van Gogh
Various well-known Brabant places will be visited
Special: in the year that 75 years of liberation and D-Day is celebrated
three groups bring a topic from the Second World War to life
Brabantsedag Heeze was given a new look last year
On five “Atmosphere & Taste squares” there are well filled stages and tasty food trucks
the Brabantsedag Foundation has expanded the Preparade and has even more artists around the theatre parade in store
If you want to listen to well-known Dutch singers
Nederpop All Stars with Erik Mesie (Toontje Lager) will perform
In order to involve the youngsters of Heeze even more actively and with a view to the future
there has been a real Children’s Parade for two years now
Last year the number of young participants had already doubled to no less than ten groups with about two hundred children
The children’s parade ends at the town hall
where the traditional opening party will start in the garden
The Children’s Parade runs through the entire centre of Heeze and is free to visit
Brabantsedag Heeze is from 10.00 till about 20.00 hours
culminating in the theatre parade which starts at 13.30 hours
Entrance and stand tickets can be ordered via Brabantsedag.nl. Children up to and including 12 years of age have free access
The website also contains the complete programme
as well as more information on accessibility and parking

Nights in Brabant are long, according to the famous local song, but the longest day in Brabant is invariably the last Sunday of August in Heeze, close to Eindhoven. What began as a simple parade with farmers’ carts in 1958 will again become an alluring event full of cultural history. On 26 August, the 61st Brabantsedag will take place in 2018
which is the product of the hard work of sixteen amateur groups
creating social cohesion as it passes through the community of the Pearl of Brabant
The birthplace of the event is Herberg De Zwaan (The Swan Inn)
directly adjacent to the drive of Heeze Castle
the plan was hatched to enact a yearly culture-historical parade
From the first procession of artisans in 1958
the parade has grown into a mobile Brabant history lesson wrapped in a theatre production
The spectacle attracts thirty thousand (extra)-regional visitors
Not bad for a municipality counting approximately ten thousand inhabitants
The amateur acting groups manage to portray an entire story during the parade
It’s not for nothing that Brabantsedag has been added to the National Inventory of Non-Material Cultural Heritage
as set out in the international UNESCO treaty
skills and rituals and aids in the passing down of this heritage from generation to generation
Due to the sixtieth anniversary of the event last year
the organisation was awarded the Silver Tulip by the Eindhoven Press Club
Chairwoman Boukje van Ettro is terribly appreciative
noting and expressing the sentiment in the name of the thousands of volunteers
A solid quarter of the community in Heeze is actively involved
The procession alone counts for two thousand actors
Behind the scenes are easily another two thousand people who act as sponsors
‘Do you know Brabantsedag and are you joining?’ isn’t even a question
Authentic Heezeners take it in with their mother’s milk
That community feeling is something to treasure
emphasizes Boukje: “A neighbour day can’t compare
Brabantsedag is the way to meet all of Heeze
At every set-up site people from outside Heeze sign up
That’s also one of the reasons why the provincial administration has embraced Brabantsedag; the King’s Commissioner and provincial deputies are present every year
asylum seekers participated in the set-up of the floats
Last week a volunteer signed up who has only been living here for a week
comes every year for the entire week and camps out
In 2016 his grandson was allowed to participate because a group lacked a pusher
Even contrary teens are willing to join mum and dad
and for younger children the event is a mobile Efteling
Clever move by the organisation: kids up to 12-years-old get free entry; parents and grandparents will join anyway
Even newer generations are being infected by the bug: “Since a few years
with a morning of information and workshops
we had the first children parade within the same theme on our Saturday opening
and the community garden was already full of float builders
Based upon a shared theme – last year: Parade of Pleasure
this year 2018: From Ravenstein to Roosendaal – the float builders choose a historical Brabant issue from before 1957 and have lots of freedom to translate it into a mobile theatre spectacle
the meters-high construction tents spring up all over Heeze
and lines are being memorized and brainstormed at kitchen tables and in bars; the quality is top-notch
Boukje calls it “Culture with a capital C and Art with a capital A
Something in the genes of Heeze breeds creativity
Everyone tires to out-do themselves; not even the yearly planning gets copy-pasted after all these years.”
the scaffolding goes up for the next Brabantsedag once again
together with the reveal of the new theme: “With this jubilee we made a point of also looking forward
The uniqueness of Brabantsedag remains the procession
the enormous rolling theatre spectacle that is unrivalled in the province or in the whole of the Netherlands.”
The plan this year is to make it an immersive experience
with even more events planned for all age groups
reveals Boukje: “You spend an entire day at a festival
and that’s the idea to make Brabantsedag even stronger and to continue attracting tens of thousands of visitors.” Because that is something the tiny village is colossal at

the beautiful village of Heeze- a suburb south of Eindhoven-has been known for its annual culture festival
Brabantsedag – or the Brabant day-is the largest cultural event about and in Brabant
It started as a peasant parade- there in lies the root of this event- now it has grown into a top event with more than 30.000 annual visitors
It is a nine-day festival that takes place every last Sunday of August and includes art
The high point of this day is the impressive parade that roam the streets of of this cosy village demonstrating the finest creative and innovative talents of almost 2000 actors in 16 rolling wagons with their splendid theatre decors and accompanying theatre
The floats displayed are unique and one of its kind other than being completely complex
elaborate with highly sophisticated designs
choreography and detailed costume designing
The groups work sometimes for longer than 10 months with passion and dedication on their cars
accessories and make their fantastic creations come alive with music
This year Heeze celebrated the 62nd theater parade on the 25th of august
sixteen groups participated and as many theater sets toured through the center of Heeze
The aim of the Brabantsedag Foundation is to look for a theme within the history of the Duchy of Brabant that can be motivating and inspiring to the car builders
This year the chosen theme was: ‘What moves the people of Brabant?’ The theme set the tone for the great rolling theatre parade by 16 car manufacturer groups
The historical subjects like ‘‘Ge Wit ’T Oit Noit Nie’ (‘Storm van Ramptoerisme’) -a tornado from 1925 that had left a destructive trail all over the Brabant countryside and how a million disaster tourists rushed over to the area struck with the calamity
causing their own chaos or the float named ‘Worthy of a Ribbon (Vriendenkring Schenkels) show how during the second World war Heeze’s weaving company Van Engelen & Evers continued their usual production monitored by the Nazi’s and yet in secret produced ribbons & emblems to celebrate the imminent freedom
The floats recreated the time gone by and reminded us about the legacy that continues
but that did not prevent the spectators to reach the venue and enjoy the 62nd edition of the Brabant Day
The spectators- almost 40.000- came prepared with caps, hats
umbrellas and water bottles to make the most of this special day filled with spectacularly towering theater sets
All the 16 groups participated for the prizes that were declared at the end of the day
The public and press prizes went to the impressive ‘Fleeing from Camp Vught
(‘Gevlucht uit Kamp Vught’) by Vriendenkring Ietskes Schif
‘Ge Wit’T Oit Noit Nie’ (‘Storm van Ramptoerisme’) was named the overall winner of the 62nd Brabant Day
The Pearl award (de Parelprijs) which is given special group performance or for special construction, representation or use of materials was handed over to Skôn construction
Their creation was on the incomparable inner thoughts of Vincent van Gogh
‘Its amazing how they have turned the concept into a theater parade of this level’
said Joyce who visited the Brabantsdag for the first time from Utrecht’I’d no idea it was going to be this huge
I’m surely going to recommend it to all my Expat friends

This year’s theme was “Parade van Vermaeck” (parade of entertainment)
The local Brabantse Dag associations spend about a year on preparations for their presentation
With enormous tractor-pulled carts, refined costumes, masterpieces of grime, choreography, and sound, the Brabantsedag parade is a two-hour mobile theatre which attracts a crowd of 30.000 people each year
Floats passing by this year included haunted houses
and “who is the fool in the mirror.” Some a treat for the eyes
others with a deep historical or political meaning – all made possible through tremendous hard work
A cart named “Charivari: public entertainment or public targeting?” which highlighted similarities between public shaming in the Middle Ages and modern ways of #targeting others

The Brabantsedag tells about the past of the Duchy of Brabant
by bringing the (cultural) history innovatively to life
This year’s theme for the 63rd Brabantsedag is ‘With verve’ (with fervour and verf in Dutch means paint)
Each float building group chose a painter from the Duchy and was inspired by a painting by his hand
without literally portraying the work of art

Its search for a scalable climate-positive house started at the end of 2021
It aims to introduce the Natuurhuis - Nature House - as “the new normal” for living in the Netherlands and unleash a materials transition
Architecten en en and Bouwbedrijf Van Herpen has been chosen as the winner of the Natuurhuis competition
The first pilot project will take place in Heeze in the province of Noord-Brabant
Construction of the first Ballast Nedam Development nature house is expected to start in mid-2023
Ballast Nedam Development said that it is striking out in a new direction with the Natuurhuis and that the climate-positive home is being made accessible to a wider public
It said that the Nature House fulfils high sustainability ambitions and at the same time focuses on affordability and scalability
As well as straw - a residual product from the agricultural sector - a whole range of other bio-based materials are used
The Nature House is energy-positive and produces more energy than it uses
This makes the house a small power station
The design seeks a connection with nature and the façade and the roof are largely covered with greenery
The greenery and natural aspects act as a buffer for water management and counteract heat stress
The winning design is by Architecten en en - a partner of Strotec
Construction company Van Herpen will build the houses in Heeze
Strotec is the Dutch supplier of prefab straw panels made by EcoCocon
This supplier offers a complete wall system with tailored straw elements
The modules are load-bearing up to five layers
have an excellent Rc value and store CO2 from the atmosphere
The first eight Nature Houses will be built in the North Brabant village of Heeze

Another sheep has been attacked by a wolf on De Groote Heide nature reserve in Heeze
This emerged from a DNA investigation by platform BIJ12
an organisation that keeps track of wolf numbers for provinces
Whether it is the infamous wolf GW1625m is not yet clear
This is because many different DNA samples are being tested at the same time
The deceased sheep was bitten to death on 9 July
That it is only now clear that a wolf is the culprit can be explained
Jansen: “We first see if it is actually caused by a wolf and then we see which ‘individual’ it is”
Several sheep were previously bitten to death in this regional nature reserve
Many of these sheep were killed by “infamous” wolf with the number GW1625m
It is a male wolf that lives mainly in the area around Heeze
The animal was especially active in recent years
He is said to have killed more than a hundred sheep during this time
Whether the wolf is also responsible for this sheep will become clear later
“Every quarter we do a DNA analysis of all samples to see which wolf it is
the next result will come at the end of September”
It is argued that imbalance of nature (no space to roam and live a natural life for the wolf) is the cause

2022 Artist's impression: Ballast NedamDutch developer Ballast Nedam is turning to straw in its efforts to find new ways of making homes both more energy efficient and better for the environment
which would be burnt or used as bedding for animals
will be used as insulation material in a terrace of eight new homes being built in traditional Dutch style in Heeze
The homes will be more than 90% bio-based and will be energy positive
meaning they will supply more electricity back to the grid than they use
They will also absorb some 90 tonnes of CO2
The idea was to create the most energy efficient and sustainable house we could
‘We held a competition to look for the best ideas and people came up with houses made with cork
which has been working with the waste product for some time
‘We really believe this is a good way forward,’ says Bos
‘It is a traditional building material and sometimes we have to go back to basics and look at the materials which are already there.’
New techniques are being used to process the straw into prefabricated panels and it is
‘Building sustainably is not just about energy efficiency
but about making sure the materials you build with are as sustainable as possible as well.’
Straw is not the only 100% natural product which is being incorporated into modern housing in an effort to improve sustainability and energy efficiency
the the underground fungal network of mushrooms
is also being used in construction when mixed with fibres such as flax to create light but very strong building panels
Eindhoven is also home to Europe’s first fully 3D printed house, which has been built out of layers of concrete.
