The police found the decapitated body of a 63-year-old woman in her home in Hellevoetsluis on Wednesday afternoon. Her son, a 31-year-old man from Diemen, was arrested on the A4 between Rotterdam and Delft a short time later. He had his mother’s head in the car with him, sources told AD
The police did not confirm this, only saying that a 63-year-old woman was found killed in her home on Molenlaan and that a 31-year-old man from Diemen was arrested as a suspect on the A4. The police responded to the home at around 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to AD’s sources, the police stopped the man’s car on the A4 near Schipluiden and found the 63-year-old woman’s head in the vehicle. They arrested the suspect and took him to a police station. The police placed black screens around the car for forensic investigation, closing one lane of the highway to give officers space and privacy to work.
A neighbor told AD that she saw the woman coming home with bags full of shopping shortly before her death. She heard a loud noise a short time later. “It was like an animal being abused.” Another neighbor said he heard a woman scream and a deep male voice. But because there are also noisy young people in the neighborhood, it did not immediately alarm him.
The street was filled with police cars not much later. The police cordoned off the area around the house for investigation.
A blood trail can be seen from a few meters in front of the house, leading towards the nearby Peperstraat, where the woman parked her car, the neighbors said. According to the newspaper, surveillance camera footage shows the son walking towards his mother’s car with a blue bag.
A neighbor said that the son no longer lived with the victim, but had been visiting for a few days.

Residents of Hellevoetsluis are shocked by the murder of a 61-year-old woman in her home on Molenstraat on Wednesday
Sources told various media that the woman was beheaded
He was arrested on the highway with his mother’s head in the car
Mayor Arno Scheepers said he and the municipality were “shocked and in disbelief about the horrific event.”
AD identified the suspect as Jesse R
he shared on the networking site LinkedIn that he no longer had a job
“Now I am looking for an organization that dares to understand the limitations of my manic depression,” he wrote at the time
“And is also not afraid to use my giftedness as much as possible.”
The police responded to the woman’s home at around 2:45 p.m
They arrested a 31-year-old man from Diemen on the A4 highway in connection with her death
the police have only said that the woman was killed in a crime and that the suspect is a family member
Neighbors told Rijnmond that Alia had two adult sons, both in their thirties. “She had good contact with one of them. The other, from Diemen, came by every now and then. Apparently, he suffered from psychoses,” one neighbor said. “Everyone is in shock. Because this is normally a very quiet street.”
Alia was known as a “very sweet woman,” the woman said. “We knew each other, but we didn’t knock on each other’s doors. I didn’t know what was going on.” Another local told Rijnmond that they didn’t know each other personally. “We said hello to each other here on the street. She seemed like a sweet woman to me.”
Until recently, Jesse R. lived on the large student campus, Our Campus, on the edge of Amsterdam, AD reported. The door to his 27 square meter studio was also closed by police tape when the newspaper arrived.
According to the newspaper, most of R.’s neighbors didn’t recognize him when presented with a name and photo. A few said they’ve seen him in the elevator, but the rest said they’ve never seen anyone enter or leave the studio apartment in question.
A 33-year-old from Hellevoetsluis was arrested this week for sexually harassing two children at a middle school in Brielle. The man, who worked there as a teacher, is suspected of sexually transgressive behavior. The examining magistrate ruled that the man will spend two weeks in pre-trial detention.
Michael Scheffers, the Rector at Maerlant College in Voorne-Putten, has said that the teacher has been fired since the incident. “We received the first indication about this in February, and we then investigated the matter ourselves. He was fired instantly based on that.”
The school have informed the parents, students, colleagues about the incident. “We want to be a safe learning and working environment,” said the rector. The Maerlant College is a large school community with around 1,350 students.
“A case like this is far-reaching and impactful, especially for victims. We are, therefore, cautious in the information we share. That does not mean that we do not understand the concerns of parents and students,” police said in a statement.

It offers modern facilities and good tourist information
along with access to canal sightseeing tours
with large cruise ships using Antwerp or Zeebrugge instead
There is little of interest in the immediate port vicinity
so hop on the metro system (buses are available at Heembeekkaai
while the Beco dock is near the Yser metro station) and head downtown
Antwerp's gorgeous cathedral and famous Diamond District make it worth a day trip if you've already been to Brussels
Trains run directly to and from Brussels and take about 45 minutes
Zeebrugge is a largely industrial port city that's mainly used as a jumping-off point for day trips to Bruges or Brussels
just head for the train station; the trip will take about an hour and 15 minutes
Liege is another city worthy of a day trip
this city of about 195,000 is tucked in the Meuse River valley
Locals will tell you there are two types of Belgium waffles -- Brussels and Liege -- and even those who live in the capital prefer the Liege version
museums and streets are often known by two names
one in French and one in Flemish -- so keep that in mind when asking for directions and navigating your way around the city
if you're looking for Grand Place and you find yourself in Grote Markt
Also be aware that most Brussels museums are closed on Mondays
it's easy to walk between Brussels' main attractions -- just remember to pack comfortable shoes for navigating the cobblestones
You can purchase single ride tickets or an unlimited day pass
By Taxi: There are many taxi stands throughout the city
particularly near major train stations and hotels
but it may be difficult to find one during rush hour
By Car: We don't recommend using a car in Brussels
as navigating the crowded streets can be more trouble than it's worth
and efficient train service is available both within the city and to most of the surrounding cities and towns
Avis and other major rental agencies offer multiple pickup locations in Brussels
Visit www.xe.com for up-to-date conversion rates
Nearly all street signs are in both French and Flemish (a variant of Dutch)
Only river ships are small enough to fit through Brussels' canals
and they dock at either Heembeekkaai or the Beco dock
only the Beco dock is a comfortable walking distance from downtown
Big ships dock farther away in Antwerp or Zeebrugge
Train service connects both cities to Brussels

that's where you might smell an agricultural odor
People in the Netherlands are not likely to complain about it
For a greenhouse in the polder near Hellevoetsluis near the Rotterdam harbor
The cannabis grower is under fire for odor nuisance
or is it mainly fear of an unfamiliar smell
one of the ten authorized cannabis growers for the Dutch Experiment Closed Coffeeshop Chain
cannot help but feel that the complaints about the smell stem from unfamiliarity with cannabis cultivation
A whiff of illegality surrounds cannabis cultivation
and in nine other locations in the Netherlands
Under the full control of the Dutch government
ten growers are allowed to grow cannabis legally
and transport from the greenhouse to the coffee shop is closely monitored at CanAdelaar
Track-and-trace is nowhere in the agricultural sector as extreme as in this cannabis trial
Late to the partyCanAdelaar was initially not even going to participate in the cannabis trial
CanAdelaar ended up as number 12 on the list
When two parties turned out not to be able to participate after all
with Austrian owners and experience with cannabis cultivation at home and in Canada
"We were late to the party," Max says with a sense of understatement
The Commercial Director understands Dutch well and is also well-versed in Dutch politics
This is evident when he later talks about the agricultural debate in the Netherlands
The agricultural sector in the Netherlands
Greenhouse rapidly convertedBack to the beginning
There was a rush to get the cultivation site ready after receiving the cultivation license in March 2023
The tomato greenhouse in Hellevoetsluis was quickly converted
Greenhouse builder Horti XS was in charge of this
"When it became clear that the mother plants would soon arrive
we worked with about 60 men at a time to get the greenhouse ready for that," Project Manager Sebastiaan Hijstek and COO Dennis Flaton of the greenhouse builder remember well
Max also repeatedly stresses how special it is what we can already see in mid-February
Two of the three greenhouse compartments in the complex
The third compartment is being prepared during our visit
and an air filtration system also passes by on a cart to be installed
Contact with neighborsAt the start of cultivation
had already been modified by greenhouse builder Horti XS so that irrigation water could be collected and recirculated
The tomato greenhouse became a greenhouse for potted plants
The fact that odor nuisance could be a problem with cannabis cultivation had not been realized enough at CanAdelaar
they had included the neighbors from the beginning in the plan to convert the greenhouse from growing tomatoes to growing cannabis
including the former tomato grower himself
complaints came to the environmental department
keeps track of complaints for the entire municipality of Voorne aan Zee
Whether that complaint is about CanAdelaar or one of the many chimneys in the port area cannot be seen on the public reporting website
Max can hardly imagine that there are still many complaints about his company
CanAdelaar immediately decided to invest heavily in air filtration systems
realize that well," stresses CanAdelaar's Commercial Director
we wouldn't do it."Once the crop starts flowering
That is substantially more than was previously needed when growing tomatoes in the same greenhouse
cultivation and processing in one companyAnyone entering the cannabis greenhouse smells virtually nothing
The first greenhouse compartment is set up for long-day treatment
mostly free sun light from outside supplemented by artificial lighting from (for now) HPS lamps (LED is an option in the future)
the plants move to a greenhouse compartment for short-day treatment
greenhouse builder Horti XS has installed blackout screens
so that the plant can sense that the days are getting shorter
The plant's natural response to this is flowering
And where in nature the plant starts making seeds afterward
cannabis growers make sure they harvest the flowers by then
you get cannabis ready for the coffee shop
What is special is that CanAdelaar does all the steps of the process itself
from the propagation of plant material to harvesting
the former tomato shed has been converted into numerous (air-conditioned) compartments
"We are quite proud of how our plan from Excel turned out in practice."
the official four-year experimentation phase begins
CanAdelaar will be the only grower cultivating entirely in a greenhouse
whether or not in a complex that does resemble a greenhouse
Max explains that the Austrians wanted to keep costs as low as possible
whether legal cannabis cultivation in the Netherlands will be allowed to continue after 2028 is not yet clear
The Hellevoetsluis-based growers want to grow a high-quality product at the lowest possible cost
they managed to be first in production despite the late admission to the experiment
"We now supply almost all 73 participating coffee shops," Max points out
he expects an oversupply in the cannabis trial
states where cultivation has been legalized
"Is that why they call it that (wiet) in Dutch?"
It is another reason why the company chooses to keep costs low
Especially the (over)regulation by the Dutch government makes cultivation expensive
The subject of track and trace comes up repeatedly
but due to the form chosen by the government also a nightmare," according to Max
A lot of manual work is involved in all the administrative operations
Five types of productsWhat helps growers in Hellevoetsluis keep costs down
is that the greenhouse complex is connected to geothermal heat
That geothermal heat comes from a project in nearby Vierpolders
This generates electricity for the HPS lighting
and the various systems for processing the cannabis
CanAdelaar will also start making specialties later this year
Some of the harvest will be processed into edibles
and none of the other participating growers can make it
That's why we decided to do it anyway." Alongside weed
those edibles will soon be the fifth end product from the greenhouse
which grows more than 30 different varieties
from propagation to cultivation and processing for delivery to coffee shops participating in the Dutch government's cannabis trial
VentIt is mainly the terpenes that give cannabis its recognizable
VFA Solutions' systems filter gases and odors from the air
The system also removes (ultra)fine dust from indoor and outdoor air
Vincent van Baaren of VFA Solutions explains: "Our technology combines ASPRA® technology with specific adsorption material
we test four types of adsorption material to choose the optimal product configuration for these greenhouse conditions
we already have experience with two types of adsorption material
but we think we may have found two more materials that can also work well."
The electrostatic air filtration technique is powerful
"It is possible to save up to 80 percent on energy costs of ventilation systems with our systems because our filtration systems have an open structure and do not clog." The growers in Hellevoetsluis do ventilate occasionally to get rid of moisture from the greenhouse
The availability of geothermal heat helps get moisture out of the greenhouse
we don't come across any dehumidification units
Max says: "Opening the windows occasionally is the best way
Sebastiaan Hijstek (Horti XS) and Max Schreder (CanAdelaar)
Air filtrationASPRA air filtration technology was originally developed for medical care but is now used in many sectors
these can lead to a reduction in yield and product quality
VFA Solutions devised a plan for the CanAdelaar project
VFA Solutions' first units were installed in Hellevoetsluis last autumn
CanAdelaar placed a hefty order to solve its problems
Vincent: "I think it's great to see here now in practice that whatever has been proven in the laboratory also works
the air filtration system also works under humid greenhouse conditions
Vincent explains: "HEPA filters do not work optimally under such conditions and can clog up more easily
We tune the closed ionization to the air composition
controlled ionization we work with in our systems is unique."
Fair treatmentWhat VFA Solutions does at CanAdelaar can be done for the entire agricultural sector
For the agricultural sector in the Netherlands
agricultural activity sometimes involves an odor
"Our entire complex is still being equipped with air filtration systems
We are very satisfied with VFA Solutions' systems
You can hardly smell cannabis here in the greenhouse now
That's why we are now also asking for fair treatment and are challenging the fines we receive."

It's easy to explore the sights of this medieval city on foot and
Though street crime isn't particularly common
you should still be on guard in heavy crowds
Ghent offers an authentic experience with lots to see and do amid easily walkable streets
There is nothing in the immediate vicinity of the Zeebrugge docks
except other cruise vessels and container ships
Don't expect to be able to walk from the ship to anywhere interesting
the walk into the city is just a few minutes
Be careful of your belongings when in crowds of people; otherwise
From the fortress-style Ghent Sint-Pieters railway station
Note the hundreds of bicycles lined up in the forecourt -- they're intended for commuters
as long as they're returned to the station
The half-hour walk (about two kilometers -- less than a mile and a half) into the center is also recommended
as the pleasant route follows a commercial shopping street (same as the tram route) and passes through the university quarter
you can also parallel one of the city's many canals
which are lined with barge-type houseboats
everything is within easy strolling distance
The tourist bureau is located in the vaulted basement of the 14th century belfort (belfry) on Botermarkt
You will find maps and booklet of restaurants
Free toilet facilities are located adjacent
and ATM machines are available in several locations throughout Ghent
Money exchange facilities are found in the train station
and an ATM is located next door at the post office
small stores and some transportation providers may not accept credit cards
so you should keep a stash of euros with you
The official languages are Flemish and French
You should have no problems in locations that are geared toward tourists
use English when talking to Flemish speakers
Belgium experiences considerable tension between the Flemish (similar to Dutch) and Walloons (French)
so you don't want to unknowingly offend someone
most lines provide shuttle buses to Blankenberg railway station
The fare doubles on weekends but is still a bargain
The Belgian Coastal Tramway runs from Zeebrugge to Blankenberg and to the seaside resort of Ostend every 10 to 20 minutes
catch a train every half hour from Central Station to Ghent
Ghent is also a stop on some river cruise itineraries
River boats dock less than a mile and a half (about two kilometers) from the city
and the transfer to the city center takes about 5 to 10 minutes
(Transportation is usually provided -- if not

The police found the body of a 46-year-old woman in her home in Wanroij
“Much is still unclear,” the Oost-Brabant police said on X
“We suspect a crime.” Officers placed white screens around the home and cordoned off the street
The arrested man is suspected of “involvement in the death of this woman,” a police spokesperson said to RTL Nieuws
but was arrested about 60 kilometers away in Duiven
and the police are investigating what happened
Coincidentally, another woman was also brutally killed in her home on another Molenstraat, this one in Hellevoetsluis. The police found the 61-year-old woman beheaded in her home
Sources told various Dutch media that he had his mother’s head in the car
The Netherlands’ experiment with regulated cannabis production has entered a new, crucial phase. From today, all coffeeshops in the ten participating municipalities are only allowed to sell cannabis grown by regulated cultivators. They can still sell tolerated hash bought through the “back door” for the time being
This involves almost 80 coffeeshops in Almere
This is a big step because it puts an end to the tolerance policy - in which coffeeshops were allowed to sell cannabis
but authorities turned a blind eye to where they got their supply because cultivation was illegal - in these municipalities
Popular legal types of weed are not always available
After coffeeshops raised the alarm about supply issues in the run-up to this next step in the experiment
the government decided to allow the sale of illegal hash for a few more months
we will have a serious problem,” Esmeijer said about the cannabis supply
“Then we have empty shelves and we fear that street trading and nuisance will increase.”
The supply concerns stem from only five of the ten regulated growers being fully operational
The rest are still starting up or haven’t even started cultivating yet
Some struggled to find a suitable location
and the search and screening of investors took longer than expected
Growers also had trouble opening bank accounts
“The intention was to start this new phase with more growers
so I understand the concerns of the coffeeshops,” Rick Bakkers of Hollandse Hoogtes
The company started with 15 people six months ago and has since grown to 140 employees working in the cultivation halls in Bemmel
Hollandse Hoogtes supplies around 200 kilograms per week
Bakker thinks that the active growers can supply enough cannabis for now

turn left and pass the Job Centre into Pimlico and the Pickwick
Double back at the GPO roundabout and up past the Odeon Cinema
past Croft Lodge Convent School and the Casino, you’ll see the Railway Inn and the Pelican
Keep going beyond the Clarence Hotel towards Newton Abbot”
If any of the above directions made any sense at all
you’re probably a Torquinian of a certain age
Younger readers may well be totally bewildered by all these names from the past
Names tell us a great deal about our history and how the Bay has changed
We often need to make educated guesses at why a place is known by a certain name
particularly if we go way back into the past
all placenames meant something to our ancestors and their study offers a great deal of information on how we got here
Local place names have come to us through the dialects of the Celts
and the Modern English of the past few centuries
it’s only in the past 500 years that we would really see English as something we would understand today
Some South Devon place names have Dumnonian Brittonic Celtic origins from before 800AD
Tor means ‘rocky hill’; Dart is ‘oak stream’; Kent is 'land on the edge'; Teign is ‘stream’; Exe is ‘full of fish’; Lemon
the river that flows past Newton Abbot’s ASDA
The majority of the names of our present-day communities
come from the time of the Anglo-Saxon settlement of the South West
This dialect is known as Old English and dates from 450AD to 1150AD
and we can break them down to make a bit more sense
we may have someone’s name informing us of their link to the settlement
probably named after an Anglo-Saxon and so we have Cocca's settlement; Paignton is Paiga’s settlement; Preston
around 1250 the abbots of Torre Abbey spotted a business opportunity and were given the right to hold a Wednesday market at a nearby river crossing
Or the settlement might be known for its location or what grew there
the location of an Iron Age fort; Berry Pomeroy
the fortified place of the Pomeroy family; Warberries
The 1086 Domesday Book records ‘Carsewelle’ which means spring where watercress grows
Watercress was an important medieval food and medicine
The land was owned by the King and so we have ‘the King’s watercress spring’
Nearby is another watercress spring, this one was owned by Torre Abbey
We mentioned earlier that Tor means ‘rocky hill’ in the Celtic language. The beginnings of what became Torquay were around the outcrop by Tor Hill Road
Possibly dating back to at least the sixth century
‘Torra’ was later recorded in Domesday as the manor of Torre held by William the Usher
the manor needed a more precise name. And so
we have Tor Brewer when held by William Brewer
It was William who founded Torre Abbey in 1196
William's daughter Alice married Reginald de Mohun (1185-1213) giving us Tor Mohun
But we still weren’t known as Torquay or Torbay
We know this as both quay and bay are French words and come from the Middle English that was spoken between 1150 and 1500
The first record we have of the future resort by name is from when the Catholic martyr Cuthbert Mayne was drawn and quartered in 1577
Instructions were given that a “quarter” of his body be put on a pole at a place called “Torquay”
the site of the recently disestablished Catholic Torre Abbey
was presumably chosen to make a political point
It would be another 200 years before Torquay achieved an equivalent outside interest
‘Torrebay’ similarly isn’t recorded before 1401
there often weren’t even fixed spellings for places across the Bay
and Tor Quay; while Paignton is in Domesday in 1086 as Peintone
the arrival of the railways ended that flexibility. A railway station serving Torquay opened in 1848
with one closer to Abbey Sands and another at Paignton in 1859
How names are pronounced and how they should be spelt can still cause debate even today
there is an inconsequential railway crossing
For decades there has been disagreement on whether this is Lowes Bridge or Lawes Bridge
a passerby was asked whose land it was and the heavily accented local replied with something that sounded like, “That be Mr Law”
The surveyors wrote down what they had been told
This wasn’t particularly important until we built a new hospital nearby in 1928
As we know that the Hengrave Estate Lodge was occupied by Mr
The railway transformed Torquay and a decision was made early on to market the resort as a premier destination for the Empire’s elite and their international counterparts. A ‘Little London’ with similar architecture and amenities to the capital was then created
Part of the growing town was even renamed Belgravia to make an explicit parallel
the hotels were given appropriately impressive names
The founders of nineteenth-century Torquay were a few families whose names live on
even though few remember their contribution
The Haldon family began to withdraw in 1885 and had gone by 1914; the Cary family had been at Torre Abbey since 1662 but departed in 1930; Cockington's Mallocks had been here since 1654 but also sold their estate to the Torquay Corporation in 1932
They left behind a legacy of streets and parks named after themselves and their family members
died fighting for the King at Newbury during the Civil War in 1643
He is remembered in Falkland Road and Lucius Street.
Even recently introduced names can cause bafflement
In December 1989 the Hellevoetsluis Way dual carriageway opened as a way to recognise Torbay’s twinning with the Dutch town
and means ‘Lock at the foot of the Helle’
it still causes pronunciation challenges for both residents and visitors
If saying Hellevoetsluis has caused anybody any awkwardness
note that there’s someone in Holland at this very moment trying to pronounce ‘Paignton’
