Acting Kingdom Representative Jan Helmond delivering his speech on Sunday KRALENDIJK--Acting Kingdom Representative Jan Helmond delivered a deeply personal and reflective speech connecting the history of World War II on Bonaire with today’s calls for unity and understanding during the annual Remembrance Day ceremony held at Wilhelminaplein in Kralendijk on May 4 people were imprisoned at Camp Playa Pariba,” Helmond reminded the audience “It was a colourful collection of prisoners: Dutch members of the NSB Austrian and Italian residents of Aruba and Curaçao and people who opposed the colonial power of the Netherlands Helmond noted the irony of how history has transformed the site: “There is nothing left of the camp The wood from the barracks was used to build the seaside hotel on the same spot a place where diving tourists and sunseekers enjoy breakfast while Playa Pariba was once a symbol of captivity in an unsafe world.” He emphasised that while much has changed in 80 years the challenges of human coexistence remain “The small island community of 6,000 people has become a melting pot of 25,000 Bonairians of various backgrounds,” he said “People born and raised here like their ancestors and people for whom Bonaire has become a beloved home later in life Helmond spoke candidly about the uncertainties of the present global climate: “Just like 80 years ago But I am sure that none of us longs for a world of war and conflict.” He called on residents to take responsibility for building peace: “How can we safeguard peace No matter where they were born – on Bonaire and safety begin with an open attitude toward everyone around you,” he stressed “because the other person simply has the right to be here Speaking directly to the recent tensions felt on the island Helmond said: “I say this explicitly here on this square very different words echoed in this place – words that violated the freedom of fellow Bonairians.” He acknowledged the difficulty of empathy and understanding: “Where people differ So we must keep trying to understand and sense one another to make more of an effort to understand someone else’s pain or longing And I’ll be honest – I find that difficult sometimes too.” I’m seen as someone ‘from the islands.’ Here I’m often seen as ‘one of them,’ from the Netherlands And I believe many others will recognise that feeling It is precisely for that reason that it’s important we keep recognising the most important thing in each other: that we are all human.” He noted the island’s multilingual character and the growing presence of world languages: “Many of us speak either Papiamentu or Dutch – languages spoken by few around the world More and more fellow Bonairians speak English or Spanish – two global languages Helmond concluded with a call for mutual learning and love for the island “We are all people who can and should learn from each other We all want our beloved Bonaire to remain an island of peace and freedom Copyright © 2020 All copyrights on articles and/or content of The Caribbean Herald N.V. dba The Daily Herald are reserved Without permission of The Daily Herald no copyrighted content may be used by anyone Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl A high school in Helmond has been plunged into chaos after a group of students allegedly bullied a 14-year-old Polish girl who then committed suicide, Omroep Brabant reported. The school has been criticized online for being aware of the bullying, but not addressing the situation, and several accused of bullying the girl have faced abuse and threats online. The school claims to have offered support to Nina, the girl who took her own life a week and a half ago. A silent march will be held Sunday in Nina’s honor. The girl’s school and the organization that it belongs to have received many indignant messages via social media and mail. “Messages like: ‘you should be ashamed’, and ‘how can you allow discrimination?” a spokesperson said to Omroep Brabant. The spokesperson said that the abuse that the school is receiving is not justified. "It all feels threatening. People are making all kinds of assumptions that are not true. It is said that we do nothing to stop bullying, but that is not the case. What we knew about the bullying has been addressed. The school is also devastated." Photographs and personal information of the alleged bullies have been shared on social media. Police told Omroep Brabant that they have received two reports of people saying they are being threatened online. Police have called on people to stop sharing photos, personal data, or rumors connected to Nina’s death online. "We know that a lot of information is going around online, often incorrect information," says a police spokesperson. “This creates even more unrest and this can harm others if you just throw names out into the world." Police also said that they are currently discussing whether officers should be present at the silent march this weekend. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. The facility formerly operated by the now-bankrupt British company Custom Powders processed Teflon powder for chemical giant DuPont which later split off its chemical operations under the name Chemours The internal records show that DuPont was aware of the illegal discharges for years The plant released thousands of kilograms of PFOA a toxic PFAS substance now banned due to its carcinogenic properties Chemours told Zembla it had no knowledge of the internal documents The company also stated that it did not withhold any information “under the legislation that applied at the time,” and emphasized that Custom Powders was solely responsible for adhering to its environmental permit obligations The municipality of Helmond is preparing legal action “This is a complete violation of the environmental permits in place at the time,” Helmond alderman Arno Bonte told Zembla “Dumping directly into the sewer is criminal.” With the factory now closed and Custom Powders defunct the municipality is targeting Chemours with a new claim for damages Bonte says DuPont’s awareness of the pollution justifies the move “This is a deliberate act of environmental contamination an additional reason to send the cleanup bill directly to Chemours.” The city is already dealing with a major pollution fallout Custom Powders filed for bankruptcy in late 2023 after Helmond submitted a damage claim related to PFAS contamination from the facility Cleanup costs are currently estimated at no less than 10 million euros Internal communications and test results also reveal that DuPont misled workers about the health risks Employees at the Helmond site were told that exposure to PFOA was not harmful Some of the measured concentrations of PFOA were reportedly many times higher than those found in DuPont workers in Dordrecht and the United States one Helmond employee had a blood concentration of PFOA that was 1,000 times higher than the current safety threshold PFAS is a group of industrial chemicals known for being extremely persistent in the environment and harmful to human health They are associated with a wide range of medical risks the specific PFAS compound discharged in Helmond has since been banned in many countries due to these dangers In 2023, Chemours was found partially liable for damages caused by PFAS pollution at its plant in Dordrecht Zembla reported that DuPont had been aware of PFAS-related health and environmental risks for decades—long before any serious action was taken This weekend, the 7th edition of the Electric Night Ride took place in the Netherlands. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects him of sexually abusing 18 girls and filming sexually tinted videos of two children. W. has now been diagnosed with a pedophilic disorder. The prosecutor wants him to be checked again by a psychiatrist. This is in connection with a possible sentencing to mandatory psychiatric treatment at a tbs facility. The prosecutor said on Thursday that her sentence recommendation will be “far above” a four-year jail sentence. The 25-year-old suspect was a teacher's assistant at a school in his hometown of Helmond. The sexual abuse allegedly happened between April 2018 and September last year at the school and at several babysitting addresses. It has been know for some time now that the case is of considerable magnitude. W. has already made a confession. In the court in Den Bosch, it became clear that it amounted to seven different criminal offenses, including sexual penetration of six girls. He filmed the child sex abuse of 13 victims. He also forced a brother and sister who he was babysitting to touch each other inappropriately. Four girls were allegedly forced to touch W. in a sexually explicit manner. In total, he is said to have performed sexual acts on 18 children or vice versa. In addition, he possessed already existing videos portraying child sexual abuse. The suspect is currently at a special wing at the remand center, a so-called Extra Zorgvoorziening, which in English translates to Extra Care Facility. This has been designed for vulnerable detainees who cannot function in a regular detention center. His lawyer, Marcel Heuvelmans, said during the previous hearing that a regular detention wing would not be safe for his client. Allegedly, W.’s cell door was being knocked on daily, and attempts were being made to open the hatch. The court decided that another psychiatrist would be added to the investigation. The next interim hearing is on May 15. The abuse took place at the primary school where he worked as well as at several addresses where he worked as a babysitter. He confessed to most of the crimes, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said on Tuesday “The police and the OM believe there are 20 victims There are currently no indications that there are more victims The abuse is said to have taken place between 2018 and 2024,” the OM said The suspect’s arrest was announced over two months ago, but few details were released at the time. It was clear that many parents had spoken with police about a man working as a teacher’s assistant after a report was filed that the man had sexually abused an underage girl. Local media reports indicated that the incidents involved a worker at the Kindcentrum Mondomijn in Helmond. The man primarily worked with children aged 7 to 12. “Until recently, the man worked as a teacher assistant at a primary school in his hometown,” the OM confirmed. After the man’s arrest, the police investigated his phone and found images of the sexual abuse of children at the school and several babysitting addresses. “Because of these images, the man is also suspected of producing and possessing child pornography,” the OM said. “No indications have been found that the man distributed the images.” The authorities have informed all involved parents and offered professional help to the children and parents. The suspect is still in custody. The first pro forma hearing in this case is scheduled for Wednesday. The police confirmed this following a report by AD. The police believe it was an accident. It had previously been reported that the baby had fallen from the fourth floor. The police are not commenting on whether it is a boy or a girl, nor are they stating when the child died. Recently, small children have repeatedly fallen out of windows in the city and surrounding areas. At the end of July, young children in Rotterdam and Vlaardingen were injured by falling out of windows, and last week, a girl fell from three floors of a house in the Franselaan in Rotterdam. The police previously stated that all cases were accidents. Furthermore, the one-and-a-half-year-old child who fell out of a window in Helmond this week also died from her injuries. The girl died on Friday afternoon. The police report that it was an accident. The girl fell from the third floor of a flat on the Markt on Wednesday evening and was seriously injured. The girl had probably climbed onto the windowsill, the police said earlier. According to Brabant media, the girl was staying with her grandmother. In a restaurant near the apartment from which the baby fell, the guests on the terrace saw the accident before their eyes, the restaurant owner told Omroep Brabant. "The guests saw a baby fall. They didn't know how or what, but they were in shock. Some couldn't speak because the situation was so intense." Shortly after the fall, dozens of people immediately came to the girl's aid, according to the local broadcaster. Several people with a medical background immediately resuscitated the child, and the emergency services, including a trauma helicopter, were quickly on the scene. This summer, several young children have been injured by falling out of windows in Rotterdam and Vlaardingen. In all cases, the police believe it was an accident. a seven-time Emmy Award nominee who played lusty matriarchs on the hit television sitcoms "Soap" and "Who's the Boss" from the 1970s into the 1990s who also delivered a memorable turn as a vain woman obsessed with plastic surgery in director Terry Gilliam's dystopian film "Brazil" (1985) 23 at her Los Angeles home due to complications from Alzheimer's disease."My beautiful who starred alongside Helmond in "Who's the Boss," said on Twitter "You were an instrumental part of my life You taught me to hold my head above the marsh What an example you were!"Helmond was in her 40s and had already been nominated for a Tony Award for her work on Broadway before landing a starring role on "Soap," a prime-time parody of daytime soap operas that ran on the ABC network for four seasons from 1977 to 1981.She then starred on "Who's the Boss?" on ABC with Milano Tony Danza and Judith Light from 1984 to 1992 followed by recurring roles on sitcoms "Coach" starring Craig T Nelson from 1995 to 1997 and "Everybody Loves Raymond" with Ray Romano from 1996 to 2004.“Katherine Helmond was a remarkable human being and an extraordinary artist; generous charming and profoundly funny," Light said in a statement "She taught me so much about life and inspired me indelibly by watching her work Katherine was a gift to our business and to the world and will be deeply missed.”Helmond played Jessica Tate "Soap," a show known for warped characters and deliberately farfetched plots including alien abduction and demonic possession People magazine referred to its "cheerfully tasteless handling of such topics as impotence etc." and it caused some controversy when it debuted."I don't think it's lurid," Helmond told People "Daytime soaps go into areas - lesbianism a woman in love with a priest - that would not be touched in prime time We just take real situations and exaggerate them."On "Who's the Boss?" The police would like to contact the owner, but according to a spokesperson, they have not yet been able to do so. A serval is a feline predator with sharp teeth and claws. Shortly after the big cat’s escape, the police sent out a Burgernet message warning residents of Helmond (Noord-Brabant) to keep their dogs and cats indoors or on a leash. Th spokesperson could not say on Monday whether that was still necessary. The Helmond Animal Ambulance said it was unaware of the escape and was not looking for the animal. Another serval recently escaped in Lexmond in Utrecht. That animal has been recaptured. The AAP Foundation, which takes in exotic animals in need, is currently caring for the serval from Utrecht because the owner did not want to take the animal back, said director and biologist David van Gennep. According to Van Gennep, the serval currently on the loose in Helmond has a good chance of survival. The animal eats “anything smaller than itself,” like mice and rats, but also rabbits, chickens, and small cats or dogs. As a rule, wild animals like servals don’t like the taste of other predators, such as cats and dogs. But if it has lived in a house for a long time, Van Gennep thinks the animal may no longer recognize cats and dogs as other predators. According to the director, keeping a serval as a pet is “highly undesirable,” and people often quickly regret it. In recent years, the AAP Foundation has received 50 to 60 requests to take in servals per year. It currently has a waiting list. As of July 1, Netherlands residents are no longer allowed to keep servals as pets. People who already have one can keep it until the end of its life. They’re also allowed to sell or give the animal away. It is not allowed to release the animal into the wild.
