The electricity grid in Rotterdam and the surrounding area has reached its maximum capacity
Large consumers who apply for a new connection or want to expand their existing one will now end up on a waiting list
The affected area includes a large part of Rotterdam-Zuid
Parts of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpernerwaard are also affected
Stedin is investigating whether it can reward some large consumers for using electricity at non-peak times
Large consumers who would like to participate can register with the grid operator
Stedin also appealed to households and small businesses to avoid peak hours on the electricity grid - between 4:00 p.m
“By using charging stations and heat pumps mainly outside these peak hours
residents and businesses help relieve the electricity grid,” regional director Maarten Bijl said
Stedin is working with TenneT on expanding and strengthening the grid around Rotterdam and expects it to have space again from 2029
The power grid throughout the Netherlands is under pressure
Demand for electricity keeps rising as the country transitions away from natural gas for cooking and heating and fossil fuel vehicles
Zuid-Holland is the only province in the Netherlands that still has some space on the electricity grid
All other provinces are colored red or orange
“Zuid-Holland still has some white spots because heavier grids were installed here due to the many industries,” a spokesperson for Stedin explained to NU.nl
the electricity grid is reaching the limits of its capacity and therefore expansion is necessary

Henk Rozema started his own fruit and vegetable trading company
The name is a tribute to the parent company
I try to deliver the trade directly to customers as much as possible
there are plenty of logistics service providers nearby to store the wares if necessary
I want to deliver the fruit directly from the source."
Fruta Rosa will focus primarily on imports from Spain
"Watermelons are a product I want to carry
"Like leaf mandarins and other special products
They often want produce outside the standard range."
Henk happily calls starting his own business a lifelong dream
"I have nearly 30 years of experience in the fruit and vegetable trade
I believe there's undoubtedly room for specialists in the market," he concludes

His father owned a cow farm in the United States
but after 1970 he started getting back into the cultivation business
they grew cauliflower and broccoli outside and green peppers in the greenhouses
where Hans and his father made the switch to pepper cultivation
they have 8.3 hectares of red and yellow peppers
Hans explains in the Growers in the Spotlight-series of ZON Magazine
After going to Wim and José Tas in Zevenhuizen for the fourth edition of ZON Magazine
this time to meet with Hans van der Waal and his wife
she will not join the conversation this time
van der Waal is officially registered as a partnership where Jolanda and I share ownership
We can do this with the support of three foremen
of which Wim Hoogendoorn has now joined the conversation.’
Both men begin to laugh when I said I initially thought Wim was a co-director
but Wim is in charge of all communication with ZON
I’m not a grower who insists on doing everything on my own
one that I can trust most tasks to without being worried
His two colleagues are in charge of the remainder of the work
including personnel matters and crop protection
We complement each other perfectly and are able to take on the tasks of the others if need be.’ When it comes to harvesting operations
the company works partly with temporary workers and
Hans’s father started his own cultivation company when he moved back to the Netherlands after having owned a cow farm in America for several years
‘Partly because he was homesick and partly because he didn’t like the farm life in America
He started an open field cultivation company growing crops like
He also had a greenhouse of 8000 meters where he cultivated green peppers for Bakker Barendrecht
In the years after he expanded the product range with eggplants and the pepper cultivation was expanded’
but his father believed he should first work in the company for a while
We didn’t earn a lot in the first few years
which we sometimes ate five days in a row because we didn’t have much money to buy anything else
Luckily the company faced better times in the years after"
the opportunity to buy a two hectares plot of land in Moerkapelle presented itself
and Hans and his father decided to build a new greenhouse there
we were the largest pepper cultivation company at the time; you can hardly imagine that now"
and Hans was given the opportunity to take over the company
In 2004 the neighboring company went up for sale
with which Hans’s company could double in size to 4 hectares
"There was actually a pretty unique moment back in 2008 when I was able to buy the 8.3 hectares of ground here in Zevenhuizen and sell the greenhouse in Moerkapelle at the same time
van der Waal has been in this location since then
but recently with half of the grounds used for red peppers and the other for yellow"
DialectDuring his final year in Moerkapelle
he opted to join the ZON in the Dutch province of Limburg
‘It took some time to get used to the Limburg dialect
but we did feel right at home at ZON from the very start
The growers from Limburg are sometimes a bit more emotionally connected to the industry and
ZON is a true growers club that works for the growers
Other sales organizations are often too close to a trading firm
Especially the transparency of ZON towards the growers is a good thing and is by far the most important to me.’
Although the company used to participate in the central sorting of peppers in the beginning
made the conscious decision to do this themselves
Wim Hoogendoorn had the following to say: "As a grower
and we thought that we would do a better job doing it ourselves
I really enjoy taking on a challenge like that as a company
We were very transparent about that towards ZON at the time
Wim is the person who attends all of the meetings of pepper growers club Pamosa
relations between Pamosa and ZON were awkward
I always say a bit of tension keeps things interesting
but you shouldn’t end up in direct opposition with each other
You also need to ensure a good connection with your sellers
which I think everyone at Pamosa is now aware of"
ClockAbout 40 to 50 percent of Van der Waal’s product makes it to auction
ZON’s strategy to also get Spanish products to auction is something we have nothing but support for because if that is what’s needed to keep your winter customers engaged
you do need to make sure not to be in the way of your own growers by doing so
What does Hans (53) see for his company in the future
"Let me start by saying that I’m happy with how things are going at the moment
It still makes me happy when I walk past the peppers in the morning
one of our four kids finished horticultural education and now has his orientation at the company
he loves it and shows an interest in one day actually joining the company
Hans smiles: "But I will not be giving it all up anytime soon

The court in Rotterdam on Friday imposed prison sentences of up to eight years on the suspects of a series of violent robberies, including that of YouTube star Nikkie de Jager and a failed robbery of football analyst Rene van der Gijp. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had demanded up to ten years in prison.
The men committed four robberies and three burglaries in a varying composition in 2020
The court did not see enough evidence to conclude that the eight suspects
aged 21 to 33 from Rotterdam and Ridderkerk
it could not be established that there was a formal partnership
acquitted all eight suspects of this charge
Armed men robbed Nikkie de Jager and her fiance at their home on 8 August 2020
They tied the makeup artist and her fiance up with duct tape
and ropes and stole valuable jewelry and a Louis Vuitton bag
The court sentenced Rotterdam resident Eddie N
whose DNA was found in the influencer’s home
instead of the eight years the OM demanded
it cannot be proven that he was at De Jager’s residence during the robbery
he was involved in the failed robbery of Rene van der Gijp
in which the perpetrators smashed his armored car windows in the driveway of his Dordrecht home
The intention was likely to rob him of his Rolex
He had 95 notes on his phone of license plates
his telephone beamed on a transmission tower near Dordrecht on the night of the crime
as did the phone of a man who had already been convicted of complicity in this crime
The other suspects were sentenced to prison terms of one year
The police have arrested two people after finding 334 kilos of cocaine in the port of Vlissingen
The drug find was already on Wednesday but was made public by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) on Friday evening
The drugs were among a shipment of bananas from Colombia
and according to the Public Prosecution Service had a street value of over 25 million euros. As a result of the cocaine find
the detective team of the Zeeland-West Brabant unit of the Seaport Police launched a further investigation
This led to the arrest of a 55-year-old resident of Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht on Friday
The suspect's home was searched on a court order where digital data carriers
another 26-year-old man of no fixed abode was arrested on the highway near Ede
Both suspects were taken into custody for further investigation
They are currently under strict house arrest. The drugs were seized and have since been destroyed by the customs special task force (TBB)
The police arrested three men on th A16 highway near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht on Sunday night for impersonating police officers and trying to fine tourists
They were dressed in clothes that resemble the Dutch police uniform
the fake cops asked a tourist for his ID documents
The tourist did not trust the situation and called the police
The real police caught up with them near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and arrested them
The suspects are a 28-year-old man from Pakistan and two men from Iran
the Pakistani man is in the Netherlands illegally
foreign gangs are active along Dutch highways trying to scam money out of tourists
They often approach foreign tourists at parking lots and gas stations
where they issue a fine which the tourists must pay immediately to them
As tourists don't know the rules in the Netherlands
"A Dutch police officer will never let you pay a ticket or fine on the spot" the police said
If a non EU citizen is fined for committing a violation
they will have to go to a police station to pay the fine
The police call on victims to note down the perpetrators' license plate number and call the real police
A total of 146 kilometers of traffic jams formed on Dutch roads on Saturday around 12:30 p.m
This made it the busiest Saturday of the year
but also border controls in the direction of Germany in connection with the European Championship
Rijkswaterstaat reports the greatest delays on the A15 between Sliedrecht-West and Gorinchem
the A16 between Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and Dordrecht
the A9 between Badhoevedorp and Amstelveen and the A10 between Amsterdam-Sloterdijk and Landsmeer
The roads in and around Rotterdam were also very busy on Saturday
This is partly due to the closure of the Benelux tunnel on the A4 towards The Hague
where new asphalt is being laid in both tunnel tubes
Let op! 🚧 De Beneluxtunnel is dit weekend afgesloten. 👇 https://t.co/23ZzOflTxn
Accidents and breakdowns also cause problems
In Rotterdam itself it is "absurdly busy" due to diversions
there is a long traffic jam on the A15 from Rotterdam to Gorinchem
This is due to the closure of the A20 between Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and the Gouwe interchange and the closure of the A12 The Hague-Utrecht between the Gouwe and Oudenrijn interchanges
Roadworks are also being carried out there
