Schiphol Group's CFO hopes for a resolution in 2025 - but one had been expected in 2024
At the heart of the matter is the conflict between growth and environmental protection
unless a conundrum involving potentially overlapping airspace and - more significantly - a row between government and farmers and the presence of nitrogen can be resolved
and the odds are stacked against it ever happening

GREEN+ - Essent and Circul8.energy plan to build a 20-megawatt electrolyzer in Lelystad
Essent and Circul8.energy plan to build a 20-megawatt electrolyzer in Lelystad
set to become the Netherlands’ largest green hydrogen production facility
this project marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions
with the potential to scale up to 105 megawatt capacity by 2026
The partnership between Essent and Circul8.energy symbolizes a pioneering effort in the transition to green energy within the Netherlands
By deploying a 20 megawatt electrolyzer in Lelystad
these companies aim to convert surplus solar and wind energy into green hydrogen
a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels
The use of electrolyzers facilitates the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen
minimizes carbon dioxide emissions previously associated with hydrogen production
Known for its robust renewable energy infrastructure
Flevoland is positioning itself as a leader in the green energy revolution
This initiative is part of a larger regional strategy to create a ‘Hydrogen Valley’ in Flevoland
aiming to leverage its abundant wind and solar resources to foster the production and distribution of green hydrogen
The project’s modular design allows for an eventual expansion to a 105-megawatt capacity
which could produce approximately 11,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually
The expectation is that by the end of 2026
marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future
The body of the woman from Joure was found by an employee of the Staatbosbeheer in the water on Knardijk in Lelystad on May 28, 2024. Her father's cell material was found under the nails of three fingers, the prosecutor said in the court in Lelystad. "That indicates she had resisted."
Results of the investigation show that the victim’s shoes had to have been taken off before she was tied up as her ankles were taped together, according to the prosecutor. Her hands were tied up behind her back. Her mouth was also taped.
The OM has stated that the taping was done by Ryan’s father, 52-year-old Khaled Al N. His DNA was found on several parts of the tape. He is currently allegedly living in Syria.
The victim must have been restrained or unconscious while being tied up, the prosecutor said. Both of her phones were thrown into the water. The phone cases were put in her shoes, which were also found in the water. “The phone case found in the victim's left shoe contained a fingerprint belonging to her brother Mohamed,” the prosecutor said.
Prosecutors quoted conversations between the family members near the time of the murder. A conversation was found on Muhanad’s phone between his brother and his father. "If she is lying and causing us to lose even more face, she must be punished,” the brother said 12 days before the murder.
Ryan’s family felt that she was acting in too much of a Western way. The OM claimed that her family was wishing for her death in chat conversations. “I hope that she comes back in a box,” and “she needs a bullet in her heart and poison in her body.”
Ryan's mother wrote: "God willing, we will see her wrapped in a shroud. Ryan is a disgrace to the family and deserves to die."The next introductory sessions are on April 25 and June 30. The case will be substantively dealt with at the end of this year.

2024 Building under way on the control tower
Photo: Depositphotos.comInfrastructure minister Barry Madlener has told current affairs show Nieuwsuur he hopes to be able to open Lelystad Airport for holiday flights next year
said it would be a waste of money if the airport is not opened
“A lot has been invested and it would be a real crime if all that investment had been done for nothing,” he said
His comments are notable because a majority of MPs oppose the plan but Schiphol is keen to see it open as an overspill hub for charter flights
The cabinet is due to take a final decision in 2025
a majority of MPs voted in favour of a motion to stop Lelystad airport opening to commercial traffic
but the far-right PVV and the VVD were in favour
public health and the nitrogen issue mean it is no longer responsible to open a new civilian airport at such a location
The airport is currently used by private jets and a flying school
The government had hoped to open Lelystad to holiday traffic in 2020 and so allow Schiphol to focus on more lucrative intercontinental flights
but that was delayed by a variety of problems
not least of which was approval from Brussels
in 2019 it emerged that the noise calculations for local residents were wrong and that people will suffer far more aircraft nuisance than expected
Many charter airlines too were opposed to being forcibly moved to Lelystad
which is without a direct link to Schiphol or a train connection

A 31-year-old from Lelystad who still had to serve two more years in prison for causing a deadly accident has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Netherlands has asked for his extradition.
The man caused a serious accident in 2019 in Lelystad. A 67-year-old man and his four-year-old grandson lost their lives in the accident. The man’s partner and the boy’s grandma were severely injured. The man was driving two times as fast as the speeding limit.
After an appeal, he was sentenced to two years in prison, a sentence that was confirmed by the Supreme Court early last year, but the man was untraceable. The FAST team (Fugitive Active Search Team) managed to trace him, and on December 20 last year, he was arrested in the UAE. He now has to serve 717 days of his sentence.
2024 Photo: http://www.lelystadairport.nlLelystad local council has said it will only consider allowing its airport to become a new base for F-35 fighter planes if commercial flights also get the green light
The council’s reaction comes after the defence ministry mentioned Lelystad airport as a promising location for the base
as part of its search for more space for “a growing defense capability”
having just the base to the exclusion of commercial activities would hold back the region’s economic development
The Flevoland provincial authorities backed the council’s stand
In January, MPs voted against opening the airport to commercial traffic because of noise nuisance, climate and nitrogen issues, but the current government’s infrastructure minister Barry Madlener said he hoped to do so next year
The airport authorities said they were not sure the airport could accommodate the base. “It was designed for commercial traffic. The ministry will have to investigate if this is a proper location,” a spokesman told Omroep Flevoland
former base De Peel in Limburg and Groningen airport Eelde figure on the defense ministry’s list
Groningen deputy Yvonne Turenhout said that it was “incomprehensible” that the government would launch another bombshell plan before repairing trust over its handling of the quake damage to their houses
It’s crystal-clear to us that a base would ask too much of the locals,” she said
Limburg provincial authorities have also rejected a base on its doorstep
Twente Airport and Woensdrecht air base were also mentioned but can only provide half of the space the ministry needs
An underage girl from Lelystad was arrested on Wednesday for spreading messages on social media in which she made threats towards schools in Lelystad. Messages have been circulating since last Monday evening in which people are called to shoot at various schools in Lelystad. The police are currently in talks with her, the police said in a statement
Police took the messages very seriously as soon as they saw them and put all their energy into tracing the source
Various punishments are possible for an offense like this
Police are taking into account that these incidents could have been the result of copycat behavior
The threats have often been shared via social media platforms TikTok and Snapchat
Lelystad Airport is currently the Ministry of Defense’s first choice for expanding its fighter jet capacity
Research has shown that practicing with the F-35 fighter jets in Lelystad would cause the least noise nuisance for locals
State Secretary Gijs Tuisman announced on Thursday
but only if holiday flights can also finally start operating from the airport
“We have really looked at all possible locations. We are looking at various criteria such as nature and housing. But the most important is how much nuisance it causes for local residents,” State Secretary Tuinman told Omroep Flevoland
The Defense sector will have to practice more
but the Ministry is trying to be as considerate as possible about it
Defense wants to add 2,300 additional F-35 take-offs and landings to its current available space of 5,200 flight movements per year
The Ministry’s first choice is for all 2,300 flight movements to happen at one location
but two locations with 1,150 flight movements each are also an option
The Ministry is also looking at the former De Peel air base on the border of Noord-Brabant and Limburg and Groningen Eelde Airport near the border of Drenthe and Groningen
The municipality of Lelystad will only consider fighter jets at Lelystad Airport if the airport also opens to holiday flights, alderman Dennis Grimbergen told the regional broadcaster
The arrival of the F-35s also must not hinder economic development in the region
The provincial government of Flevoland agrees
Allowing fighter jets is only negotiable if the airport also opens for wholesale traffic
The airport told the broadcaster that it has been in contact with the Ministry of Defense and it is not clear whether the airport is suitable for the fighter jets
“Lelystad Airport is set up for its current activities and for commercial trade in the future
Further research by the Ministry of Defense must determine whether Lelystad Airport is a suitable location.”
"It is crystal clear to us: it is non-negotiable
Fighter jets at Eelde would ask too much of our residents."
Limburg has never been in favor of reopening De Peel Air Base. The provincial government and the surrounding municipalities in Limburg and Oost-Brabant are all against the idea, L1 reported
A teenager allegedly murdered by family members last May was being monitored by intense surveillance and was receiving protection from authorities before she was killed. Ryan Al Najjar, 18, was abducted, bound with tape, and drowned in Lelystad
It was not clear why her protection was stopped
Prosecutors have said they believe her family felt disgraced by her involvement and integration in Dutch society
and her father fled to Syria to evade arrest
the Public Prosecution Service (OM) previously indicated
Her protection by the authorities was already ended before she was killed
confirming reporting by the Leeuwarder Courant which was published on Monday
The office also would not say when security started for Al Najjar
who was living in Joure at the time of the slaying
The Leeuwarder Courant requested information from the police and the Public Prosecution Service about Ryan’s security in the period before her death
Information about her was found in the system to log surveillance and security details for individuals
Prosecutors suspect that Al Najjar was the victim of an honor killing, saying they have evidence to indicate that her family thought she acted too much in line with Western beliefs
They were ordered to remain in pre-trial detention in February
The brothers accused her father, Khaled Al N., of carrying out the murder
Prosecutors said his DNA was found on the 18 meters of tape used to restrain his daughter
His DNA also matched forensic evidence found under three of her fingernails
which “indicates she had resisted,” the prosecutor told the District Court in Lelystad in February
Her hands were bound behind her back, her mouth was taped shut, and her ankles were taped together when her body was found in the water near Knardijk by a forest service employee
“If she is lying and causing us to lose even more face
in a text conversation with the other two suspects 12 days before the murder
Other statements were made indicating she should be killed for her behavior in those messages
The young woman’s mother also allegedly wrote
Ryan is a disgrace to the family and deserves to die.”
The next preliminary hearing in the murder case will take place in Lelystad on April 25
and another status hearing is expected on June 30
The trial date will likely take place later this year
Minister Barry Madlener of Infrastructure hopes to open Lelystad Airport for holiday flights next year, he told Nieuwsuur
I think it would be a shame if such an investment turns out to have been for nothing.” A small majority in parliament is against opening the airport for commercial use
The PVV Minister recently visited Lelystad Airport
which is currently only used for sports aircraft
has been wanting to use the airport for overflow holiday flights for years
but the opening has been delayed time and again
The government program only states that the Cabinet will decide next year on whether or not to open Lelystad Airport to commercial use
Madlener made his intentions clear for the first time
there are “some opponents” but many proponents for allowing holiday flights from the airport
“So I still have to see where that will land
In January, the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament, adopted a motion against commercial flights from Lelystad
Coalition parties NSC and BBB also supported the motion
“We are against it because the added value of opening the holiday flights does not outweigh the inconvenience for local residents,” NSC MP Olger van Dijk told the program
The BBB’s biggest problem is that opening Lelystad will cost a lot of nitrogen space
which the farmers’ party would prefer to reserve for the agriculture sector
But BBB MP Cor Pierik did tell Nieuwsuur that the party’s position isn’t set in stone
And then we could come to a different conclusion.”
there will be a parliamentary majority in favor of opening Lelystad Airport to commercial flights
Pierik said that this responsibility weighs heavy on the party
there are other parties that could play a key role.”
Four schools in and around Den Bosch and schools in Almere and Lelystad are the newest targets of school shooting threats posted on social media platforms like Snapchat and TikTok
The Noord-Brabant schools involved are the Yuverta, the Bossche Vakschool, and the ds. Pierson College in Den Bosch and Rodenborch College in Rosmalen, Brabants Dagblad reports
which consist of pictures of guns and the text “shooting tomorrow,” circulated online on Monday evening
threats targeted various schools in Almere and Lelystad on Tuesday morning
The schools in Noord-Brabant notified students and parents
“An image has been shared via social media for a few hours now showing threatening language
and the name of four schools,” they wrote in an email
“Because the name of our school is also mentioned
the police have been informed via the safety protocol.”
The schools are open on Tuesday and lessons are continuing as normal
“The police indicate that the school can provide their education as usual
The Flevoland schools are also open on Tuesday. The police are keeping an eye on the situation, a spokesperson told Omroep Flevoland.
A police spokesperson confirmed to the Brabants Dagblad that they are aware of the threats and are investigating
“Online threats have been made more often in recent days,” the spokesperson said
“Schools in Breda were also mentioned earlier.”

Mid-market rental supply quickly drying up; Only 8 listed in Amsterdam
The supply of mid-range rental homes is quickly drying up, also outside the Randststad. There are currently only 8 mid-segment rentals available in Amsterdam. Almere has two. Lelystad and Middleburg do not have a single home listed for rent between 900 and 1,158 euros, the Telegraaf reported after scouring rental sites like Pararius and Funda
most landlords in this segment are selling their rentals as soon as the current tenant moves out
Since the Affordable Rent Act was implemented in July
rents in the mid-segment have been regulated to between 900 and 1,185 euros per month
That often barely or does not cover the sharply increased taxes and other costs
“The tax alone is quickly 800 euros per month
Mid-range rentals are quickly disappearing in Limburg too
said Stefan Stijns of the real estate chain Boek & Offermans
it is usually no longer profitable,” he said
“There is really a chronic shortage in the price segment up to 1,500 euros
your phone will be ringing off the hook.”
Joshua Holsnijders of Verra Makelaars in The Hague told the newspaper that they rented out only four mid-segment homes last year
“That is only 1 percent of all the rental homes we did
you could live for rent between 1,000 and 1,500 euros
The rental market now actually starts at 1,700 euros
The homes that are still available for rent in the mid-segment rarely appear online on the market
“Landlords don’t want to answer 400 responses to a home
That has been mandatory since the new Good Landlordship Act
Then you are more likely to rent to someone you know,” Holsnijders said
Real estate agents in the Amsterdam region and Limburg said the same thing

may have been the victim of an honor killing
the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reported
The body of the young woman was found in the water on May 28 on the Knardijk in Lelystad
They are accused of committing the murder together
De Telegraaf and the Leeuwarder Courant have already published extensively about the case; both papers received an alleged confession from somebody who said that he was the father of the girl
The OM is now reporting that he is suspected of involvement with the murder of his daughter
There are clues that the man is currently in Syria
The victim stayed in Rotterdam in the days before the body was found the victim
the police reported in a new plea for witnesses to come forward
She was said to have been taken to Lelystad in a dark-colored Saab station wagon with several people in it
Police are looking for people who saw the Saab on May 27 at 10 p.m
They are also asking for footage of the car and its occupants
Prosecutors would not comment on the case earlier due to the two suspects being under restrictions
which means that they were only allowed to contact their lawyer
"In the view of the Public Prosecution Service
it is no longer necessary in the interest of the investigation that the two have no contact with the outside world other than with their lawyer."
The first public hearing in this case is planned for September 13 in Lelystad
The police arrested two men for involvement in the death of 18-year-old Ryan al Najjar from Joure
The young woman’s body was found in the water along the Knardijk in Lelystad a week after she disappeared from her hometown
Al Najjar was last seen in Joure on May 22
Her body was found in the water along the Knardijk in Lelystad on May 28
The police started a large-scale investigation
which led them to two suspects - a 22-year-old man from Joure and a 24-year-old man from Leeuwarden
The police arrested the two men in Joure on Monday
which means that they are only allowed contact with their lawyers
The police are investigating how Al Najjar died and what happened to her between the time of her disappearance on May 22 and her body being found
Investigators asked witnesses to come forward

Closing Schiphol at night would bring peace and quiet to 9,500 locals whose sleep is currently severely disturbed by aircraft noise, RTL Nieuws reports based on an analysis Schiphol sent to the Cabinet earlier this year
Banning night flights would hit Transavia hard
but would not jeopardize Schiphol’s hub function
Reducing noise pollution for locals has been high on the political agenda since a court ruled earlier this year that the government has been ignoring locals’ interests in favor of the airport’s economic interests for years
The government previously promised to send an impact analysis to parliament before the summer
It got delayed and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management hopes to submit it soon
The broadcaster discovered that Schiphol did its own impact analysis and submitted it to the Cabinet earlier
According to Schiphol’s analysis, night flights cause 10 times as much nuisance as flights during the day. A night closure is, therefore, the most effective measure to reduce disruption quickly. A quieter fleet or flying less at night - options Minister Barry Madlener is examining - will be much less effective
The RIVM previously discovered that the slightest form of noise pollution already significantly increases the chance of sleep disturbance
Only a night closure eliminates that completely
The party most affected by a night closure would be Transavia
The KLM subsidiary carried out two-thirds of the 8,300-night flights at Schiphol last year
Cargo flights accounted for 10 percent of that number
According to Schiphol, holiday airlines like Transavia could continue serving their customers by moving their flights to Lelystad Airport. A majority in parliament is currently against opening Lelystad Airport for commercial air traffic, though Minister Madlener said he hopes to do so next year
where flight numbers are to be capped from the end of 2023
a decade after the prospect was first mooted
The result is an impasse that has dragged on and on
by which time every conceivable environmental reason for axing the project will have been exhausted

Lelystad Airport (EHLE) is the biggest general aviation airport in the Netherlands
The airport also has a fully completed terminal building

The Dutch military is investigating whether fighter aircraft can jointly use the civil airports in Eelde
the Ministry of Defense announced on Friday
the military will need much more space in the coming years
the ministry presented plans for expansion
These included additional ammunition storage places
and more options for low-flying helicopters
The ministry received over 2,200 responses to the plans
About a fifth of the questions were about areas where fighter jets fly overhead
The Defense Ministry answered some of those questions on Friday
The shared use of civilian airports is one option
and the ministry is investigating the possibility at the three airports
The airports in Rotterdam and Maastricht are ruled out because flight movements already cause a lot of disruption there
The ministry may also expand exiting air bases like Leeuwarden
People are mainly concerned about the impact on quality of life and health if more flight movements take place
They also want to know whether they can expect compensation if there are more fighter jets in the area
The ministry will conduct a study into the health effects of more flying
The armed forces need more space to train and practice sufficiently
The plans could also have consequences for housing
The military is also looking for an additional location for large-scale ammunition storage in Flevloand
and Drenthe for ammunition storage capacity that can be deployed quickly
The Army also wants to concentrate units in the center of the country
A new barracks in Flevoland is still a possibility
as is the expansion of the barracks in Stroe and Ermelo
representatives from the ministry and the military will visit all provinces to explain its plans

Material handling and logistics automation company Vanderlande has secured a new contract to incorporate a new baggage handling solution at Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands
which is a member of the Dutch airport operator Royal Schiphol Group
is set to undergo a phased redevelopment project to provide alternative capacity for non-Mainport Amsterdam-Schiphol related air traffic.
The upgrade project is scheduled to be completed by 2019
the new system will be integrated with automated guided vehicle (AGV) technology that will help replace the use of conveyors and sorting systems for handling passenger luggage
It will also feature a self-bag drop solution that will enable the airport to optimise the travel experience for passengers
Vanderlande’s baggage handling technology will offer high levels of flexibility and scalability with the possibility of implementing additional vehicles
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
This will help the system upgrade itself with the growing airport traffic without the need of any immediate building expansion
Vanderlande chief technology officer Vincent Kwaks said: “This is an excellent example of how Vanderlande is able to adapt existing technology to create an entirely new solution
“We’re confident that our innovative equipment – combined with intelligent software applications – will provide maximum efficiencies to Lelystad and the wider aviation industry.”
The new solution has been designed to ensure shorter project lead times and uses up to 50% less energy compared to traditional baggage handling systems
the system will enable the vehicles to be easily recycled
Lelystad was granted a permission to develop into an airport that could accommodate 45,000 flights each year
