Some children may not get a spot for preschool during the Cherry Hill school district registration process
Selection of preschool students is expected to rely on a lottery process
with each applicant's identifier on a ball in a drum and randomly drawn
Farrah Mahan, Cherry Hill Public Schools assistant superintendent for PreK through 12, said a preschool preregistration link will be added to the district website from February 3 through February 14 so parents of a child who turns 3 or 4 by October 1
"We do have parents who will (try to preregister) at 1 a.m
on the third," she said during an information session about the district’s preschool expansion last week
"But it does not matter if you are the first person to hit submit or it is 11:59 p.m
You are still on the list to be included in the selection process."
Each name received during the 12-day window will be assigned an identification number
The numbers will be written on balls and mixed with others in a rotating drum
Children not chosen in the first round will be waitlisted
and their order on the list also will be based on their spot drawn in the lottery
because we understand that universal free preschool can really be life-changing for some of our families," she said
"We know the impact that it has for our students
so we take the process very seriously and want to give everyone an equal opportunity to get into the program."
In his State of the State address on Tuesday
Phil Murphy called for the New Jersey to continue toward free
"We will save every parent money by offering them a free
and enriching environment to leave their child during the workday
whether it be full-day K or universal pre-K," Murphy stated in his prepared remarks
Cherry Hill parents or guardians who complete pre-registration will be notified in April whether their child was chosen for a preschool seat or was waitlisted
Parents whose child is already enrolled in a preschool program or waitlisted do not need to pre-register
The district is expecting between 700 to 1,000 preschool applications for the 2025-26 school year during the preregistration period
"While we want to have a seat for every child we do not
We ask that you be patient with us as we continue to expand," she told parents
Mahan also said the logistics of scheduling individual bus routes for the number of students enrolling make it impossible for parents and guardians to choose which of the preschool programs their child attends
She said that preschool currently is being offered at the Estelle V
Malberg Early Childhood Center or one of the private provider locations of Cadence Academy
follow the same school calendar and have teachers and teacher aides vetted under the same state or district guidelines
The information session was held as the district entered year two of a five-year preschool expansion that was funded by a New Jersey Department of Education grant totaling $3.4 million
the district’s supervisor of preschool and English as a second language
"Not everything is perfect or in place at the moment," Katsikis said
adding more students and expanding to include more private providers
You will see changes throughout those five years."
Mahan added: "We understand that many of you have children who are already enrolled in a private location
and you have to notify them and/or secure your spot.…We had a lot of parents tell us last year '(The district) needs to move faster.' We heard that

“We pride ourselves on our excellence in teaching and research in science here at City College and as such
To be able to help more of them pursue these important careers is wonderful news.”
Bronx native Bernard Malberg (1922-2016) graduated from CCNY in 1950
Army during World War II and attended the New York University College of Dentistry on his return
Shortly after establishing his dental practice in West Islip
and Flower also assumed the roles of his unmarried and childless friend’s personal attorney and the sole trustee of his charitable trust
“When he first approached me (about being the trustee)
‘what charity do you have in mind?’ He said

"So remember from where he came," Lewis-Hall continued
" The black man who made it to the top of his profession
facing many challenges that had never been able to be broken through."

Not everyone is happy. The Cherry Hill school board renamed its administration building to honor Arthur Lewis
Some community members wanted to keep the current name to honor a special needs advocate
While high schools around the country have been changing their names to move away from offensive stereotypes and the nation’s segregationist past
the Cherry Hill school district has a different problem: how to honor two outstanding community members
A proposal to rename the district’s administration building to honor Arthur Lewis
its first Black school board member and a champion for diversity
passed unanimously after a heated debate at a three-hour meeting Tuesday that some said divided the community along racial lines
a longtime educator and advocate for special needs children
“I think it’s a fitting tribute,” said Pat McCargo, of the Cherry Hill African American Civic Association

After the plan became public a few weeks ago
there was an outpouring on social media to keep Malberg’s name on the building
There were calls to name another building in the South Jersey district or a park after Lewis
“I don’t understand why one legacy has to be erased for the other,” Jen Richman
“They are both outstanding individuals who contributed so much to the betterment of the community.”
who was recently named an assistant superintendent in Cherry Hill
board member Miriam Stern tried to delay the name change until May
The board said it would discuss how to honor Malberg at its May meeting
“The either-or proposition I find troubling,” board member Ben Ovadia said
said Cherry Hill continues to experience institutionalized racism “that makes it seem like we are choosing one over the other.”
Prior to the vote, Superintendent Joseph Meloche said renaming the administration building was a fitting way to honor Lewis. He also touted Malberg’s accomplishments as a teacher and administrator. The building houses the district’s alternative high school program and the board of education
Lewis doesn’t take away from the legacy that Miss Malberg had,” the superintendent said

She said the family “humbly asks for nothing.”
“My father was a man for all people,” she said
A decision by the Cherry Hill school board to move its Alternative High School from the Lewis Administration Building to Cherry Hill High School East is not universally supported by the public
according to comments made at the Tuesday school board meeting
The alternative school student population consists of those who are experiencing trauma
have difficulties managing their emotions or those who need academic recovery and acceleration
Discussions to relocate the Alternative High School have been going on for at least a decade
the district's director of special education
the timing for the relocation finally seems right
staff and group of students to endure a transition like this," Mallory said
The district plans to designate the B Wing of Cherry Hill High School East exclusively for Alternative High School students
That space will be called Coles Alternative High School and will retain the current Alternative High School's academic core staff
two full-time certified mental health clinicians
The relocation will also allow Alternative High School students to take electives with Cherry Hill High School East students
expand alternative school student extracurricular opportunities and create new fundraising opportunities
Acting Superintendent Kwame Morton called the relocation
a "tremendous opportunity" and "the right thing to do."
Public comments during the school board meeting suggest that not everyone shares the school district's outlook
"East is very congested in between class periods (when) moving between classes
By relocating a certain portion of the building to the alternative high school
it may exacerbate those issues of congestion," said Matt Rentezelas
the Cherry Hill High School East representative to the school board
said the relocation announcement was "a slap in the face to wake up (to) the morning after we were marching on Trenton (to support more school aid) with you by your side
Added Laurie Neary: "The most disturbing behavior that I have seen is from the adults." She said that some refer to alternative school students as prison inmates
The district can accommodate less than a third of the free all-day pre-kindergarten students whose parents applied for available openings in the district's program
A total of 526 families applied for 150 available seats
Letters will be sent April 22 to the parents whose children were chosen
the school board unanimously agreed to apply for a waiver regarding the classroom size in the district's current preschool and preschool expansion programs at Malberg Early Childhood Center
The waiver is needed because the current classrooms at the center are smaller than the 950-square-foot of usable space that the New Jersey Department of Education generally requires
The classrooms meet the waiver requirements of 700 square feet of usable space and have bathrooms in the classroom or within line of sight
Assistant Superintendent Lynn Shugars said it is common for older schools to request the waiver
Shugars said the yet-to-be-constructed additions that are part of the preschool expansion will comply with the space requirement
The school board approved job descriptions for a director of elementary education and a director of secondary education
Member Renee Cherfane abstained and members Benjamin Rood and Sally Tong did not attend the meeting
Several members of the public asked the board to justify that action in the wake of the $6.9 million state aid reduction and likely cuts to district operations
Morton said confidentiality about human resource decisions kept him from discussing the job descriptions in depth
He added the positions are "budget neutral" and that a reorganization of the district's organizational chart is coming
Board President Miriam Stern said that some of the cuts that the public alluded to will affect positions
TAUNTON — Maria’s Place is coming to downtown Taunton and with it what is to be believed the area’s first pizza muffins
Located at the site of the former Stephanie’s in downtown Taunton, at 67 Main St., Maria’s Place is set to open in December, just in time for the Lights on Festival at the Taunton Green and will be a “family operation” serving breakfast and lunch
with the addition of a dinner menu and pizza if things go well
Taunton resident Marie Malberg is leading the venture
who has owned and operated restaurants and pizza shops in the area all his life
Frazis says pizza muffins were a big draw at his shops in Arizona
and he hopes his pizza muffins will catch on in Taunton
a pizza muffin is all we love about pizza merged with hand-held
Frazis says the pizza dough is cut to fit a muffin tin and can be stuffed with cheese
pizza sauce and just about any and all pizza toppings in known creation
so of course pizza and pizza muffins will be on the menu
The plan for now is to open for breakfast and lunch
“It's always been a dream of mine,” Malberg said
I'd spend weekends with my dad if I wanted to spend time with him
“And my dad can do this with his eyes closed
but we're gonna be doing breakfast and lunch here
Playoff pointersGreater Taunton football players to watch this postseason
Fraziz has owned and run nine pizza shops over the years
including past ventures at Middleboro House of Pizza
Central Pizza in Bridgewater and Nick and Angelo’s in Bridgewater
but returned home recently to be with the family
and specifically his 1-year old granddaughter
“I have a 1 year old and I want to set an example for her
I want her to see me working and that you have to be driven
you have to have ambitions and shoot for what you want in life
Though food and restaurants have been a constant throughout her life
Maria’s Place marks a career change for Malberg
who worked as a nurse prior to getting the itch to get back into the restaurant business
and my husband and him and I have just been talking about putting our all into a little family restaurant."
“So it's been about two months we've been really pushing and looking around
We thought about food trucks but then this just came right into my hands
Push back from neighborsHarvey Street neighbors say traffic already a problem as city eyes land for houses
with a service counter and kitchen in the back
But Malberg says it’s the perfect size and just the right spot for what she has in mind
Malberg is leasing the space from Stephanie’s owner Stephanie Connors
who closed Stephanie’s due to injuries sustained in an auto accident
has been nothing but supportive and helped to make an easy transition
“We were just driving down here and we noticed it was closed
see where it goes.’ She gave us this opportunity and we're just running with it.”
The plan is to do some minor interior renovations
get some new signs and menus and get cooking
but will help out where he can and more than likely will lead the fixing up effort
so he definitely was pushing for this for me," Maria said
Malberg says the menu will build off her dad’s cooking repertoire and input from guests
a number of interested customers have suggested breakfast burritos
The lunch menu will include staple sandwiches and soups
We're definitely going to bring some Greek to it
But Taunton has a big Portuguese community
But definitely we're going to bring a little bit of Greek-ness to the menu.”
The goal is to be open in time for the Lights on Festival
“We want to be out there showing our face and contributing with all the other local cafes and diners around here and just bringing some good food to the community
Parents seek answers Thursday at a Cherry Hill public schools informational session on the expanded preschool program
and it was no different last night for the expansion of the preschool program offered by the Cherry Hill school district
Cherry Hill school board President Miriam Stern said the district in October received word of the $3.4 million grant to expand preschool
She asked for patience as the district works to bring on the additional preschool students
"We absolutely understand and recognize there are pain points," Stern told parents at the session at the Malberg Early Childhood Education Center
thank you for bearing with us and understanding."
Additional funding from the state has made 150 preschool spots available
Letters were sent to parents whose children were on the waiting list in mid-November
A second group of letters recently went to other parents
who said he has lived in the district for 20 years
wanted to know why he was not contacted in mid-November
placement list," he told the school officials
"He has probably moved up because I am sure some people did not accept."
The officials said they did not know the answer but said someone would provide him with that information later
All provider sites for the preschool program have been vetted by the district and the New Jersey Department of Education
Sites must abide by all district policies and procedures
the district’s 15:1 student-teacher ratio and required districtwide professional development
Several parents expressed concern during the meeting that a child at one preschool location may not receive the same experience as a child at a different location
Edwards said the person who holds the school district's community parent involvement specialist position will be key to ensuring that does not happen
"This person will support our community and the parents from Malberg or in our provider sites to ensure you all stay connected with our program and that your needs are being met through our program," Edwards said
Resident Michelle Njaeu had questions about substitutes that the private providers will use "and how that will affect the kids in the class
…I find that an ongoing challenge with day care centers is that oftentimes when teachers are absent
The Cherry Hill Public School District representatives at the meeting said they did not know the answer but said someone would provide answers later
"We know there is a high demand and a high need on the west side of Cherry Hill," board President Stern said
The district needed to find school properties with space to expand
a safe route and there needs to be enough space on the property," Stern said
Some of the children will be sent to private providers
Parents cannot select which private provider site their children attend
Each class is permitted a maximum of 15 students and each class will be composed of only Cherry Hill district students
Several parents expressed concern that online reviews suggest quality differences among the private providers
"That is why there's extreme oversight in our partnership," Edwards said
"That is why there are so many additional positions that come with the funding (to regularly visit) the sites to ensure the safety of our students
Children who accept a preschool spot and are subsequently fully registered will be assigned a location based on proximity to that location and their home elementary school location
The district must offer the child transportation
Cherry Hill school board member Gina Winters said those who had additional questions could email Acting Superintendent Kwame Morton, at kmorton@chclc.org
Ed Flower can only think of one reason why his friend of 60 years
“I suspect it was his idea of a joke,” Flower said
one of the things that Flower has “figured out” is anything but a joke for students at Stony Brook University’s School of Dental Medicine: how to distribute his friend’s money to defray the cost of a professional education
Bernard Malberg Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund will make education more accessible for dental students at Stony Brook
establishing a partial scholarship for one student each year
“Investment in the education of our students at this level creates a resoundingly positive impact on our students and the school community,” said Mary R
“This generous gift will allow the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine to be competitive with our peer institutions in the recruitment of talented students interested in a career in dentistry.”
By making education more accessible for aspiring dentists at Stony Brook
Flower sees a fitting way to honor the legacy of a man who made dental care more accessible in his community
“It’s amazing that he put together as much money as he did when you consider that his fees were very modest,” Flower said
“He dealt with patients who were not wealthy
The West Islip community had a large cross-section of people
and he got many patients who did not come from the wealthiest part of town
by investing conservatively over the years
a portion of that estate has been used to create far-reaching impact across the country
“I’ve embarked on a program of helping small
$15,000 or $25,000 can mean to some of these smaller charities
Malberg would support?’ I’ve known him since 1956
and what he would like and what he wouldn’t like.”
but the veteran of both World War II and the Korean War quickly became more than a dentist to Flower and his wife
was within walking distance of our home,” Flower said
he might get on his bicycle or he might walk over to our house
He took care of our kids; he was our dentist until he retired.”
while Flower has found great satisfaction in donating his friend’s money “off the beaten path” — “You change the whole face of their charity,” he said — it seemed truly fitting that the largest gift go to support students in his chosen profession
in the Long Island community where he practiced and made his home
in various communities on Long Island,” Flower said
Stony Brook will be able to ease students’ path toward possibly filling that need
“We are honored to be the permanent home of the Dr
Bernard Malberg Memorial Scholarship Endowment in Dental Medicine,” said Dexter A
senior vice president for University Advancement
“The Malberg Scholarship is a lasting example of how our neighbors strengthen the University for generations to come.”
The Dr. Bernard Malberg Memorial Scholarship Endowment is part of the $600 million Campaign for Stony Brook, the largest in SUNY history. To date, more than 47,000 people have contributed a total of more than $589 million. For more information, visit stonybrook.edu/campaign

About 30 parents spoke about the district’s response to the Hamas October attack on Israel at the Cherry Hill school board meeting on Tuesday
receives the Cherry Hill School District's "Heart of the District" award during the school board's November 14 meeting
the Cherry Hill Board of Education on Tuesday approved an expansion to the district's preschool program with little discussion
Acting Superintendent Kwame Morton told 70and73.com after the meeting that a $3.4 million grant the district received in October will provide for all-day
general preschool education for about 150 students
Morton added that once those students are placed
there will be about 50 students left on the preschool waiting list
A child who enters preschool through the expansion will not have to pay registration or attendance fees, according to a FAQ on the district's website
Parents cannot pick which school their child attends
Some said they felt left out of the loop regarding the preschool expansion
"I would like to know when the public will have the opportunity to hear a full discussion on this plan," said Anne Einhorn
"I feel like I'm pretty much in the dark about how you intend to move forward."
Others living in Cherry Hill said they wanted to know if the district intended to hire new teachers or would delegate responsibilities to existing teachers
School Board Member Gina Winters apologized for the board's action
she noted that little could have been done differently since the state decision on the district’s grant application came up after the last board meeting
The district will hold a town hall meeting on November 30 at 7 p.m
at Malberg School to provide more information about the preschool program
The town hall meeting will also be live-streamed
Officials at the town hall meeting will answer "all of your burning questions…or I will write them down and get you answers as best as I can," the board member said
Each preschool location will also host an open house in the coming weeks
For the second consecutive school board meeting
parents of either Jewish or Palestinian backgrounds raised concerns and fears that their children do not feel safe in school
Some also claimed that the district's administration is showing preferential treatment towards one group over another
John Starling, executive director of the Gracious Center of Learning and Enrichment Activities in Cherry Hill
a nonprofit that serves the South Jersey Muslim community
"It is imperative that we take proactive measures to foster an environment where diversity is not only embraced and celebrated," Starling said
"I am following up today and emphasizing a proposal that we made in a recent meeting with the Board of Education to implement comprehensive diversity and sensitivity training for both students and staff
tailored to address the specific challenges posed by the rise in Islamophobia."
asked: "If we are going to devote so many resources towards Islamophobia
what are we going do about anti-Semitism?"
Acting Superintendent Morton denied that a preference was being shown for one group over another
He also talked about the communication he sent out to the district shortly after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7
"The communication really was to make our students and our community aware of the mental health and resources that are available," he said
"We were intentional in mentioning Hamas attacks
The district presented Cooper Elementary School student Olivia Miller with its second-ever "Heart of the District" award
said this recognition is given to someone within the district who displays "outstanding character
devotion and caring that may not be in the spotlight but touches many and improves all."
The school board also approved several strategies that will take effect immediately to boost Student Learning Assessment scores
including hiring more basic skills teachers for elementary school students
providing additional tutors and allowing high school teachers part of one workday a month to discuss best practices
A demographic study to assess the district's future needs might begin soon
as would the district’s first-ever communications audit and a review of the district's website
Mayer said "is not as great as maybe some users would like it to be."
A naturalised Maltese person is to be stripped of their citizenship after the US added her to its sanctions list
saying she has ties to Russian intelligence services.
The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control on Thursday added 21 entities and 13 individuals to its sanctions list
saying they are “operators in the Russian technology sector” that helped Russia illicitly procure dual-use equipment and technology for its defence sector
They are the latest companies and people blacklisted by the West
which is targeting wealthy Russians with ties to Vladimir Putin's Kremlin
Three of those companies are based in Malta.
Among those 13 individuals is Evgeniya Vladimirovna Bernova
who is listed as a Russian national who also has Maltese citizenship
one of the companies on the sanctions list
through her shareholding in Djeco Group Holding Ltd
The US government said that Bernova is an associate of the Moscow-based OOO Serniya Engineering
a company that Washington says is at the heart of a procurement network “engaged in proliferation activities at the direction of Russian Intelligence Services"
operates through companies in several countries
“Malberg has worked to deceptively acquire dual-use equipment on behalf of Russian end-users,” the US said
the US said that Moscow-based Sernia-Film Co Ltd
has facilitated the export of equipment by Malberg to intended government end-users in Russia
Also added to the US sanctions list and linked to Bernova and Malberg is Nikita Aleksandrovich Sobolev, who serves as director of the Malta-based firm and is a Maltese resident, according to US information made public.
Bernova and Sobolev are also the joint directors of a Maltese company that leases high-end camera equipment to film crews shooting on the island
That company does not feature on the US list
Djeco Group Holding Ltd and Maltarent Ltd were also added to the US sanctions list
Both are Malta-based companies that the US says formed part of the network that worked to "deceptively acquire dual-use equipment on behalf of Russian nationals"
Malta's Home Affairs Ministry did not name whose citizenship is being stripped and did not specify how the person in question had acquired that citizenship in the first place
A graphic provided by the US Treasury Department illustrates the Serniya network's reach
It instead noted that Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri has started the “deprivation process” to strip the unnamed person of their Maltese citizenship, in line with provisions in the Maltese Citizenship Act and subsidiary legislation.
Malta, Cyprus and Bulgaria have come under pressure from the European Union to strip Russian and Belarussian nationals who bought EU citizenship through golden passport schemes of their EU passports.
Malta froze its controversial cash-for-passports scheme for Russia and Belarus last month
saying at the time that no person who featured on the sanctions list was a Maltese citizen.
all property and interests of the designated persons that are in the US or in the possession or control of US nationals are blocked and must be reported to OFAC.
50 per cent or more by one or more blocked people
all US transactions with these entities are prohibited.
financial institutions and other people that engage in certain transactions or activities with the sanctioned entities and individuals may expose themselves to sanctions or be subject to enforcement action
In a guidance note issued on Friday and seen by Times of Malta
Malta’s Sanctions Monitoring Board said it is helping EU and international investigations into the sanctioned activity.
While OFAC sanctions are not enforceable in Malta
the SMB recommends that Maltese economic operators undertake the necessary due diligence when dealing with people
entities and bodies listed by national sanctions of other countries.
Operators should pay close attention to the reasons why such sanctions have been imposed in the first place
“The SMB strongly recommends that all Maltese economic operators and financial institutions in the Republic of Malta exercise enhanced due diligence when dealing with the persons
entities and bodies listed by the OFAC and with assets belonging to these persons
“The SMB is also calling public entities to undertake any necessary action
in line with their respective local legislation.”

Government will be revoking the Maltese citizenship of two Russian nationals sanctioned by the US
The act allows the responsible minister to deprive people of their Maltese citizenship under certain circumstances
It applies to those who bought citizenship as well as those who were naturalised.
