The International Finn Masters Committee is delighted to announce that the 2021 Finn World Masters will be held in Medemblik
Following the cancellation of the 2020 Finn World Masters at Port Zelande
and then the postponement of the 2021 Finn World Masters in Puntala
the Dutch Finn class immediately began to work on finding a venue for 2021 to complete their commitment to host the Finn World Masters
It will happen 13 years after the last time the Finn World Masters was held in Medemblik
many Finn Masters will remember a week of amazing tropical weather
The dates will be the traditional Masters week of 21-28 May
Planning is already underway and more details will be published as soon as they become available
said: “We are very happy that Finn Club Holland has stepped up and made this great offer in these uncertain times
We know we can rely on their enthusiasm and the experience of the Royal Yacht Club Hollandia to put on another great event for us
We have to wait longer to visit Puntala again
but I also know that will be well worth the wait.”
“We look forward to working with Finn Club Holland and Royal Yacht Club Hollandia over the coming year to plan what will now be our 50th Finn World Masters.”
The 2020 Finn World Masters was supposed to be the 50th Anniversary event
but all the celebrations have now been put back to 2021
“I am sure that Medemblik 2021 will be a great party and hope as many Finn Masters as possible from all over the world will be able to take part.”
of course we are very sorry that we cannot go to Puntala in 2021 as many Dutch Finn sailors have really good memories of the Masters in 2011
But we understand the extreme difficulties our Italian friends are facing
so we are happy to be able to take over from them.”
Many of you will remember Medemblik as a great place to sail with often very nice conditions
two Gold Cups and three European Championships were sailed in Medemblik
And of course many of you competed in the yearly SPA-Delta Lloyd-Breitling-Medemblik regatta
So many of you will feel at home in one of the best European sailing areas.”
“The very experienced Royal Yacht Club Hollandia will be our host again
So if the weather is like it was in 2008 and if the COVID-19 disaster is behind us we will have a fantastic FWM2021.”
“Hope to see many of you next year in good health.”

won the 2016 A-Class Catamaran World Champion held June 20-24 at Medemblik
Here class editor Gordon Upton provides a debrief of the event and the latest designs on display…
This was Mischa’s second title following the 2012 win at Islamorada and being runner up last year to Glenn Ashby. With 7 straight bullets and a race to spare
he beat a strong field including Olympian and Former Oracle AC team member Darren Bundock and former double World champion Stevie Brewin
the event experienced all weather conditions other than snow
The first scheduled day was blown off with 31 knot gusts
Day three had a massive torrential downpour right on the first race start gun
followed by a flat calm and then a 180 deg windshift
All this made for challenging conditions and a true test of sailing
With 118 boats from 17 countries competing
the fleet was initially split in two randomly for the first two days
but with a seeding of the top sailors to avoid them racing each other too early on in the tournament
The group was then redistributed overnight onto fleets again
However this had the side effect that some sailors could be lucky and be drawn in a fleet with
as the weather was usually changeable throughout the day
who was drawn to race all his races in the higher winds where
he excels – his previous title was won in the beginnings of a hurricane
Mischa’s fast powerful sailing style forced the speed from his new DNA F1 ‘A’ cat
a boat that he had a major input into the design of
as he accidentally overstood the top mark after a windshift
before executing a perfect handbrake turn around it and foiling off in the opposite direction
The battle for second between Bundy and Brewin was over after Stevie Brewin
and broke a rudder on the last downwind of the penultimate race
fixed it and got back in time to get his second bullet of his series
sailing in his first ‘A’ Cat Worlds was always up at the front
other than in the first race on the final day when a plastic bag on a rudder dropped him to 11th
Polish sailor Jacek Noetzel was a close 4th
The fastest woman sailor was Carolijn Brouwer
She finished her first ‘A’ cat event happily in a superb 15th overall place on her Exploder Ad3 with its slightly reduced mast height
that this certainly wouldn’t be her last race in the class
which hopefully may become more popular with women
as they realize that the boats can be customized to their own weight and sailing styles
most of the foiling boats are now using the decksweeper sail
The lower centre of effort really works well on a foiling boat that needs to be kept flatter
This also gives them another gear when going uphill for the same reason
The concentration of the smooth airflow under and over the trampoline has been noticeable too
Twin skinned tramps with all the ropes sandwiched between
mean the underside is now sealed to the hulls to create a tunnel hull effect which aids lift when foiling
Sandro Caviezel’s Scheurer C7 even had an extended ‘empennage’ type wind extending back from the rear beam to the stern
This was designed to further smooth the airflow
it may make the boat a handful in a high wind going uphill
The older design ‘Classic’ C or straight board boats proved to still score high places in the non-foiling winds below about 8 kts
The new Holland Composites DNA F1 with its exquisite stealth fighter looks and semi solid tramp was fast in the hands of the right sailors
the considerably cheaper Polish Exploder Ad3 is more customizable as regards adding control systems
And it’s not much slower either – ask Bundy

Protesters set hay bales on fire on the A7 near Medemblik in Noord-Holland.
The A1 towards Apeldoorn is completely closed between Voorst and the Beekbergen junction
and two lanes are closed in the other direction
The closure will likely last until late afternoon
The public works department struggled to find a contractor to clean up the asbestos-containing waste dumped there by farmers
“We are working hard to clean the road
but it is expected that the contractor will be busy with the work for quite some time
We are now taking into account the end of the afternoon,” the Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson said.
The contractors initially hired to clean the road withdrew due to threats and intimidation
The A7 is closed in both directions between Middenmeer and Abbekerk
The same highway is also closed toward Heerenveen at the Oude Riet service area
And three lanes of the A28 toward Hoogeveen are closed at the Lankhorst junction.

Netherlands) – All fleets completed two races today at the Laser Radial World Championships in Medemblik
Breeze on the IJsselmeer was a steady 12 knots
creating a decent chop and more challenging conditions for the sailors
Marit Bouwmeester (NED) found the stronger conditions to her liking and repositioned herself at the front
Viktorija Andrulyte (LTU) and Bouwmeester were launched at the pin
and Bouwmeester rounded in fourth behind Pia Kuhlmann (GER) and Evi Van Acker (BEL)
and by the final downwind she had the fleet behind her
Alison Young (GBR) had an outstanding performance as she rounded every mark in first
sailing into a comfortable win ahead of Bouwmeester in second
Bouwmeester began the Championship with a rough start sitting in 60th after Day 1
“Despite the difficult situations on the water today
Marit managed to show a good and stable performance,” Marit’s coach
“Our starting point for the remaining races stays the same: we can’t allow ourselves any more mistakes
The new conditions unveiled different leaders in the white fleet today
Race 5 took off with Manami Doi (JPN) ahead of the fleet after the first upwind
with Weger following in fourth behind Silvia Zennaro (ITA) and Sarah Douglas (CAN)
Doi placed second with an established distance from of the rest of the fleet
Pernelle Michon (FRA) initially headed the fleet around the first mark
with Douglas and Georgina Povall (GBR) close behind
Weger evidently found these conditions favorable
and Josefin Olsson (SWE) sailed into third
Doi and Van Acker are tied for first place with 21 points
as they have maintained top 10 finishes (each with one discard) over three days of racing in very different wind
The key to consistency is “preparation for lots of different conditions
and be prepared for everything,” Doi explained
I hiked hard today and I do enjoy the waves in Medemblik.” A sailor who has also adjusted to these conditions
is Weger with 22 points and only one point out of first
the leaderboard changed with today’s conditions
Eliot Merceron (SUI) used the wind and chop to his advantage as he lead the fleet around the course in Race 5
Maxime Mazard (FRA) and Nik Pletikos (SLO) followed Merceron to the finish
Race 6 was claimed early on by Marcin Rudawski (POL)
rounded in second and maintained his position to the finish
Zac Littlewood (AUS) worked his way up to take third in the final race of the day
Racing continues tomorrow with two more races scheduled

with the Australians at their best when the winds reached 15 knots
King’s best placings were a second and a third and he finished in the top 15 in five races
The huge fleet was divided into four fleets after qualifying races with fellow OTB sailor Josh Ragg finishing third overall in the Emerald fleet
just one point behind the second placegetter
