the barrel vault of the Grote Kerk in Naarden showcases an extraordinary work of art
The five-century-old paintings above the nave and choir are astonishingly well-preserved
often called the “Sistine Chapel of the North,” is undergoing a 3D scanning project to uncover the secrets of its medieval ceiling murals
The digital research initiative aims to illuminate the long-standing mysteries surrounding the artwork’s origins
including the artists’ identities and the precise timeframe of their creation
Researchers from various Dutch universities are collaborating to create a detailed digital 3D model of the church’s barrel vault
the team produces high-resolution digital mural replicas
These scans will enable researchers to examine the artwork more precisely
revealing intricate details in brushwork and pigmentation that are invisible to the naked eye
This in-depth analysis could potentially lead to the identification of the artists and provide new insights into the techniques and materials they used
This project serves a dual purpose: uncovering historical information and preserving cultural heritage
The digital models will act as a permanent record of the artwork
ensuring its preservation for future generations and increasing accessibility through online platforms
Student involvement and restoration planning
Before the commencement of large-scale restoration efforts
students can explore and work within the church
The technology allows for comprehensive documentation of the expansive painted surfaces
students are tasked with developing strategies to support the restoration process
such as creating digital models to test potential interventions without risking damage to the actual vault
The project covers 700 square meters of painted planks and beams
Following the completion of the research and scanning phases
the restoration process is expected to take two and a half years and require an investment exceeding $2 million
researchers are optimistic that their work will unveil new aspects of Grote Kerk’s artistic legacy
providing a more profound understanding of this significant piece of Dutch cultural heritage

So whether you are eating delicious cheese in Edam
marveling at the fortifications at Naarden
or roaming about in the roadless paths of Giethoorn
you will undoubtedly enjoy your weekend retreat in the best small towns in the Netherlands
Hailed as the “Venice of the North” and about 33 minutes from the city of Zwolle, the dope dorp (village) of Giethoorn is only accessible via the many waterways and walking/bicycling paths crisscrossing the centuries-old thatched abodes of the town
Because it is a car-free and road-deprived area
Giethoorn promises plenty of fresh air and liberal treks for those interested in regions such as the Weerribben-Wieden National Park
and gemstones from De Oude Aarde (The Old Earth) museum

There are also numerous treks and trails in the Thorn-Wessem ferry route beside the Maas River
places like the Hotel Abdijhof Thorn do not disappoint
“Hansa” refers to an alliance among old European trading cities, and the small town of Doesburg is one of these prominent trading communities in the Netherlands. Only about 22 minutes from Zutphen, Doesburg used to be a bastion fort in the 1700s on the River IJssel at its confluence with the River Oude Ijssel
Designed by engineer Menno van Coehoorn at Prince Willem III’s request
part of Doesburg is shaped after a star-shaped fortress
replete with High Defensive Lines composed of ramparts
and trenches down to the Low Defensive Lines with the Turfhaven or Kraakselaan road
Within the town’s barricaded walls are the Martinotoren—an old church tower—and the Doesburgse Mosterdfabriek
one can find the Netherlands’ famous tulips at the National Park Veluwezoom
and one can enjoy a good night’s rest at either the Stadshotel Doesburg

Whether you are strolling through the Oude Haven (Old Harbor) or traipsing through the Oosterschelde National Park
you will never feel reproachful or morose when exploring the beautiful sceneries Zierikzee promotes and protects
get a much-needed vacation and a long-awaited sleep at the Hotel van Oppen
Naarden is similar to Doesburg in that its shape is akin to a star-shaped fortress most European towns are known to have
has protected the Gooimeer River and the 20-minute-away city of Amsterdam from invading armies
Every third Sunday from the months of May to September
the townsfolk of Naarden their bulwarked legacy by reenacting the 17th century via the “Garnizoensdagen.” Travelers can learn all about Naarden’s past at both the Comenius Museum and the Vestingmuseum
while the Het Spans Huis (The Spanish House) focuses on the year 1572 when troops from the Spanish Empire massacred much of large Naarden’s people
Feel safe and sound while staying in Naarden’s welcoming establishments like the Fortress Hotel
Whether you are coming from the neighboring nations of Belgium and Germany, or from any other country in the world, the Netherlands or Holland welcomes newcomers with an austere and straightforward attitude renowned among the Dutch
Step into fairytale-like dwellings in island abodes such as Zierikzee or in carless communities such as Giethoorn
Delve into a wartime past in fortressed abodes and dwellings as best seen in Doesburg and Naarden
sniff a few tulips and gaze up at the impressively lazy windmills that the Netherlands is known for
There are many new experiences to gain from this small but influential country
and among these wonders are the best small towns in the Netherlands suitable for a weekend retreat

The two companies inked a non-disclosure agreement on December 22
One of the things apparent is that the companies wanted to make a splash at the JPM conference
the deal came together in a surprisingly short two weeks
The filing indicates Lilly’s team wanted to “expeditiously” perform due diligence and then make a big splash at the JPM
In that regard, they were successful
with other companies working on targeted oncology therapies like Agios Pharmaceuticals
“Today’s acquisition marks the third deal for targeted oncology companies since the beginning of December
and we believe the resurgence in M&A is likely to benefit the other late development-stage and early-commercial stage companies in our coverage universe.”
The two companies had been in contact since April 2018
but acquisition talks only began in December
Loxo has one FDA-approved drug on the market, Vitrakvi (larotrectinib)
It is an oral TRK inhibitor developed and commercialized in collaboration with Bayer
Regulatory documents suggest that Lilly was most interested in one of Loxo’s pipeline products
which has “positive interim data” in early-stage clinical trials and had been granted breakthrough status by the FDA in September
LOXO-292 is an oral RET inhibitor being evaluated across multiple cancer types
Investment bank Raymond James projects almost $500 million in annual revenue for the drug by 2023
an oral BTK inhibitor currently in Phase I/II
being evaluated in several B-cell leukemias and lymphomas
a follow-on TRK inhibitor being studied by Loxo and Bayer
Loxo didn’t hunt for competing bids and Lilly apparently revised its offer only a single time
going from the initial $230 per share to $235 per share
This was a 68 percent premium on Loxo’s January 4 closing share price
Loxo’s chief executive officer Josh Bilenker and his team are big winners as well
Bilenker’s stock options are worth $240 million
raked in $92 million in stock and $41 million for the golden parachute
senior vice president of Finance gained $25 million in stock and $13 million for the golden parachute
Lilly has been trying to build its oncology presence. The Loxo acquisition will go a long ways toward that goal, even though the company took a hit today. Its ANNOUNCE Phase III clinical trial of Lartruvo (olaratumab) in advanced or metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS) failed to meet the primary endpoints of overall survival (OS)
a platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha blocking antibody
was being studied in combination with doxorubicin in patients with STS compared to doxorubicin alone
It didn’t meet OS in the full study population or in a sub-population of patients with leiomyosarcoma
There was no difference in survival between the study arms
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granting the drug accelerated approval and conditional marketing authorization by the European Medicines Agency (EMA)
Soft tissue sarcoma is a complex disease marked by multiple subtypes
Sarcomas are described as “relatively rare” and typically develop in connective tissue
The American Cancer Society estimated 13,040 newly diagnosed cases in 2018
with about 5,000 of those people likely to die from it
“Lilly was surprised and disappointed that Lartruvo did not improve survival for patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma in this study,” stated Anne White
“Lilly is committed to helping people who have soft tissue sarcoma and we will carefully study the detailed data in an effort to better understand the different results between the two trials
We are thankful for the patients and physicians who have participated in the ANNOUNCE study.”

2012 at 4:26 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}It is with great joy that our School Board of Directors awards Renee VanNaarden the Lion’s Pride award for October 2012
She was nominated by a fellow teacher who wrote that
“Renee embodies all that is good and right in American education
She is the consummate teacher—professional
Renee has matured into what all of us in education aspire to be: an inspiration to colleagues
and a great source of pride for the Lower Moreland community.”
but Renee did not set out to be a Spanish teacher
She thought she was going to be an English teacher
which was what her first job out of college was after majoring in English and Spanish
She actually had her first teaching job in the high school from which she graduated
She then taught in Massachusetts for three years when her husband was transferred
She did substitute teaching while her three children were younger
One of her substitute positions with Lower Moreland was as a long-term substitute Spanish teacher
This position required a great deal of courage on her part given that the bulk of her experience was in English
but it turned out that she loved teaching Spanish and she happily accepted a contract teaching Spanish when it was offered to her
Initially she travelled between Murray Avenue and the High School
but now she is happily immersed in the High School
She started the Spanish Club around 17 years ago at the High School since none had existed
The event for which she is now famous throughout the community is “Dancing with the Spanish Stars” extravaganza which will have its 6th performance in March
We expect that the High School Auditorium will be packed once again
“Dancing with the Spanish Stars” got its start through cultural activities that the Spanish Club was doing including dancing flamingo
Renee has brought in professional dancers to assist with the event
but she has been able to find students in the Club who dance competitively
she has been able to get a former student to teach the dancing
but Renee still spends countless hours ensuring that this presentation is a night to remember
but when the students decided that they wanted to give something back to the community
the nearly $1,000 in funds raised were donated to the Foundation for Lower Moreland Schools
Renee is motivated to go above and beyond her teaching duties because she enjoys the positive vibes that she gets from the students and she enjoys seeing them grow and be challenged
Her own kids laugh at her because when a school year is ending
she will say that she doesn’t think she could ever enjoy a group of students as much as she did those who are departing
she won’t be able to stop talking about how great her new students are
Renee is also motivated as a former Lower Moreland parent who sent her three children here
she volunteered at each of our schools and
got to know so many of her fellow teachers and gained such a respect for the faculty and programs
Her daughter went on to go to the University of Pennsylvania and then obtain a Ph.D
Her middle son went to Lehigh University and then to Villanova Law School
She is also a proud grandmother of three with a set of twins on the way

Two different cultural sites in the Netherlands were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Monday
The new water defence lines and the Colonies of Benevolence became the 11th and 12th locations from the Netherlands on the list
A Dutch and German portion of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire was also going to be discussed by the World Heritage Committee later this week
There are over a thousand World Heritage Sites in total
The Defence Lines of the were constructed on orders of King Willem I in the early 19th century as a system of waterworks to protect the country against its enemies and to defend against high water
It is an 85-kilometer long route from Biesbosch to Muiden
It includes the Muiderslot and Slot Lovestein castles
The Defence Line was extended to Amsterdam towards the end of that century
"Extending 135 km around the city of Amsterdam
this defence line (built between 1883 and 1920) is the only example of a fortification based on the principle of controlling the waters."
the World Heritage Committee added the Colonies of Benevolence from Belgium and the Netherlands on the list
just south of the Dutch border with Belgium
The Society of Benevolence built the seven sub-sites starting in 1818
"to reduce poverty through social employment in new agricultural settlements," UNESCO stated
"The colonies were established either as ‘free’ - for families who received the chance to run small farms
or ‘unfree’ - as large collective structures for vagrants and orphans," the organization added
"The Colonies of Benevolence pioneered a new public private approach based on investments in agriculture on barren land
providing access to education and employment
and preserving ‘peace and order' in society on the one hand
but also 'false assumptions about the make-ability and productivity of people and land' on the other."
Poor people in cities were given plots of land and cattle so they could become self-sufficient
and their children were given an education
The Roman Limes was a northern border of the Roman Empire which had territory in the Netherlands extending to include Nijmegen
The World Heritage Committee will consider adding them this week as the 13th UNESCO site in the Netherlands
Just last year archeologists uncovered a section of an aqueduct in Nijmegen. Roman roads were also found further away near Katwijk
The UNESCO submission was made by 20 Dutch municipalities

North Melbourne footballers have been accused of behaving badly and abusing residents during the club’s post-season celebrations at a Port Melbourne pub last Wednesday
3AW Breakfast’s Rumour File was alerted to a possible case of ‘out of control’ behaviour from members of a ‘sporting club’ last week
Port Melbourne resident Tzena Naarden then revealed on 3AW Drive she had been abused by a group of young men who had spilled out into a laneway next to her home
but did not realise who they were at the time
She said she had since found out they were North Melbourne players
Ms Naarden said the men were looking for a set of keys outside The Cricketer’s Arms Hotel and one of them set off an alarm after climbing onto the roof of a house
‘They told me to go away in not the nicest terms,’ Ms Naarden said
‘I’d like to say I’ve found those keys
She said the pub had a reputation of being a ‘little out of control’ at times
‘I’m not completely blaming them (players)
I’m more blaming the pub for letting them escape and run riot in the street,’ she said
3AW Drive retrieved the set of keys from Ms Naarden and Tom Elliott has invited their owner to come and pick them up
LISTEN: Port Melbourne resident says North Melbourne players abused her
we think there's some value in giving the SurvivorNet community access to some key players in the oncology ecosystem who have tremendous influence over what medications ultimately make it into the oncologist’s office
at the country’s largest cancer conference
we had the chance to sit down with Jake Van Naarden
Executive Vice President at pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly
“It’s an unfortunate reality that I think our innovation hopefully over time can either reduce those kinds of phone calls over time in the best-case scenario or at least make those phone calls a little bit less scary,” he added
“I don’t take a lot of pleasure in reporting that
for patients with newly diagnosed metastatic breast cancer
only 60-70% receive one of these drugs as their initial therapy,” he said
“So that means that 30 to 40% of patients are not getting drugs that have proven clinical benefits
Eli Lilly says the next step lies with on-the-ground education for physicians
“We need … physicians to make sure they’re up to speed on the latest data coming out of conferences … so that they’re adopting the medicines that can most impact [patient] lives,” he said
This helps make sure “that those medicines are adopted for the right patient so that the outcomes that we’ve observed in clinical trials can actually be felt by public health and by individual human beings.”
