SEARCHThe global authority in superyachting
The 71.8-metre Feadship build Project 827 has officially hit the water following outfitting works in Amsterdam
The superyacht has lain low since her first sighting in May 2024
when the bare hull was transported to Amsterdam from the yard's Nieuw-Lekkerland site
Construction began in 2022, with Project 827 sold by Burgess just six weeks after entering the market in July 2023
"From the moment we released information about [827]
there were several clients who jumped at the opportunity
including her new owner," said Maarten Janssen
"He was attracted by the relatively short delivery time and the opportunity to bypass the waiting list."
Janssen continued: "He [also] loved the exterior and interior design
and the yacht totally fit what he was looking for in terms of layout for family use
Project 827 blends the East and West in a marriage of "Scandinavian warmth" and "Japanese minimalism", the yard has previously said. A raked-back superstructure and sharp bow by Studio De Voogt come together to create a dynamic profile on the water
Guests boarding from the swim platform can either ascend the staircase to enter the yacht from the main deck – complete with a seven-metre swimming pool – or
the steps open to reveal a dedicated wellness area at the heart of the vessel with dual accessibility through the beach club and main staircase
Project 827's interior, designed by Italian studio FM Architettura d'Interni
embraces the "Japandi" style with its use of modern furnishings decorated by light
In a series of renders released by the yard
an unconventional layout sees both the formal dining and lounge areas sitting longitudinally along the main deck saloon
raising the capacity for onboard social gatherings
Accommodation is spread across seven cabins
including two VIP suites and four additional staterooms on the main deck that have been strategically placed to maximise the amount of natural light entering each cabin
A dedicated owner's deck – a "rare feature" for a yacht of this size – houses the master suite with wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows supplying panoramic views
There is also direct access to a private breakfast area and a hot tub
with the secluded level made possible by the raised pilothouse exterior
the sundeck boasts a second pool with large sunpads forward
as well as a spacious aft deck for dining and relaxation underneath a large overhang
Project 827 is scheduled for delivery in summer 2025
According to BOATPro, Feadship has 17 projects in the works across its four construction sites, the largest of which measures 132 metres and is scheduled for delivery in 2027. The Dutch yard hit the headlines just yesterday with the news that its 80-metre Project 716 had entered outfitting.

A 57-year-old man who sexually assaulted at least 30 women in Zuid-Holland in four years from his racing bicycle has been sentenced to a year in prison
The court sentenced the man to 24 months in prison on Wednesday
with half of those conditionally suspended
The sexual assault incidents occurred between May 2019 and August 2023 in the polders near Leiden
at random and touched them on their buttocks
or cycling in remote recreational areas at the time
The court concluded that they were chosen as victims because there would be no witnesses
The suspect acted "deliberately and calculatingly," the ruling said
Police became aware of the man after he had been filmed by a camera of a boat rental company
The images were shared in a whatsapp group of the man's cycling club after a television broadcast of the investigation program Team West
A psychologist has diagnosed the man with frotteurism disorder
a condition in which someone becomes aroused by touching another person without consent
The women had no way of knowing that the man’s intention was to touch them shortly
“many feared that he would return and do something worse,” the court concluded
“These are exactly the type of incidents that make women feel limited in their freedom of movement on the streets or going for walks.”
The court has ordered the man to undergo treatment at a forensic clinic
If he commits the same offense again within three years
he will also have to serve the other 12 months in prison

The transition to electric buses in the Netherlands is facing serious setbacks, with charging station failures, battery issues, and power grid congestion forcing the temporary return of diesel buses. Public transportation companies across the country report delays in electric bus deliveries
The challenges have resulted in hundreds of diesel buses being reintroduced to compensate for electric fleet shortages
causing the pantograph to occasionally fail to make contact,” a spokesperson for bus operator EBS said about charging issues at Apeldoorn station
The rollout of electric public transport has been far from smooth
Transportation companies are struggling with power grid congestion
The cold weather in recent months has further reduced battery efficiency
we often find that charging stations either don’t work at all or function only partially,” EBS stated
the company currently operates only 12 electric buses alongside 228 diesel buses due to power grid limitations
“We have applied for the necessary power connections to ensure we can achieve zero-emission operations in Fryslân by 2030,” a Qbuzz spokesperson said
supply chain disruptions have forced Qbuzz to use diesel buses
with vehicle manufacturer Van Hool’s bankruptcy and late deliveries from Iveco contributing to the crisis
Delivery delays have become a recurring problem
multiple transportation companies have received their electric buses late
forcing them to bring older diesel models back into service
Arriva has managed to maintain electric operations where required but anticipates needing diesel buses in the Roosendaal region starting in December due to power grid congestion
“The power grid is simply overloaded,” the company said
As charging infrastructure in a new depot remains unusable
the company has no alternative but to use diesel buses
Buses are forced to recharge at Lelystad Airport and an industrial park before heading to transit hubs for service
which means deploying 40 diesel buses,” the company said
Thirty-one of these replace electric buses that were supposed to arrive in 2023 but have not yet been delivered
while nine additional buses are needed due to charging limitations
Passengers and environmental goals are both affected by these challenges
The frequent use of diesel buses leads to increased emissions
contradicting the Netherlands’ goal of achieving fully zero-emission public transport by 2030
The responsibility reportedly partly lies with provinces and regional transit authorities
which often require transport companies to operate emission-free fleets when granting service contracts
companies may overpromise on their ability to deliver
the bus must raise a pantograph,” one industry source said
and limited battery range reportedly makes it difficult to adjust schedules on the fly
Some transportation companies are now taking a more cautious approach
we are still allowed to operate a diesel fleet,” a Keolis spokesperson said
but in consultation with the province of Utrecht
we are doing so gradually due to grid congestion.”
says 40 percent of its fleet is now emission-free
“Where delays in the transition occur due to power grid congestion
such as coordinating charging schedules with other stakeholders,” a company spokesperson said
Not all transportation companies are struggling
we have been operating one route with passengers,” an HTM spokesperson said
“We immediately monitored battery performance
cousins Sven and Lennart de Jong bought a disused water tower for €200,000
with a plan to turn it into their joint full-time home
They then hired RV Architectuur to help make it happen and after spending approximately the same amount of money again on renovations and other costs
Rising to a height of 34 m (111 ft) in the Netherlands
Transformation Watertower Nieuw Lekkerland
was originally built in 1915 by contractor Visser & Smit and held a water reservoir for the area
The cousins actually used to spend time in the old tower as children
climbing up and down the stairs and playing games
The pair moved into the tower as soon as possible and then continued renovating the interior
with additional changes made to accommodate their growing families
One concern was to make sure the relatively small 9-m (29-ft)-diameter space did not feel claustrophobic
The original three-story interior was also split into six floors to accommodate both families
The interior layout is now arranged in two distinct living areas and sleeping areas – one for each family – with additional sleeping space for the smaller children
The cousins also plan to install an indoor swimming pool in the tower's old water basin area
which should make for a nice addition once finished
Renovating water towers is a regular enough occurrence in the Netherlands that the country's Dutch Water Tower Foundation hosts an annual award recognizing the finest examples
Transformation Watertower Nieuw Lekkerland was named the winner in 2020
"The basis of the successful transformation is formed by the powerful design of [RV Architectuur's] Ruud Visser and Fumi Hoshino," says a statement from the owners
"Huge floor-to-floor windows looking out over the river De Lek and the Dutch polder landscape contribute to the quality of the spaces inside and fit perfectly with the robust appearance of the watertower
It is refreshing to see that such an inspiring transformation can be realized with a small budget
"The motto of the architects during the design process was: 'Do not change a water tower into a house
yet live in a water tower,' and exactly this was the strength of this transformation!"
the structure is situated on a dike overlooking the lek river and the windmill populated landscape
the project revolved around two main challenges: how to create windows in the façades
without losing the character of the original structure; and how to configure the building so that it celebrates living inside the water tower
rather than appearing as a typical residential property

RVArchitecture’s conversion of the project recently won the dutch watertowerprize 2020 — an award given every year to the owners of the best transformed water tower
the tower in nieuw-lekkerland belongs to two cousins who were born and raised very close to the site
the duo bought the building with a view to transforming it over the next decade
the tower and the surrounding area has been remodeled on a modest budget
they both got married and started families of their own
RVArchitecture — led by project architects ruud visser and fumi hoshino — concluded that the façade’s diamond-shaped windows must be preserved as they were essential to the structure’s character
the new openings were to designed to ‘dance around’ the diamond windows and were positioned in accordance to their respective floor plans
the windows in the sleeping areas are screened on the outside of the building with vertical wooden lattices that serve as curtains
the hexagonal tower had to meet all housing and building regulations
the project’s ambition was to celebrate living inside this unique structure
the tower has been divided into three sections: a double height garden-room
both homes have a floor with a living area and a separate floor for the sleeping quarters
‘the basis of the successful transformation is formed by the powerful design of ruud visser and fumi hoshino,’ states the jury of the dutch watertowerprize
‘huge floor-to-floor windows looking out over the river de lek and the dutch polder landscape contribute to the quality of the spaces inside and fit perfectly with the robust appearance of the watertower
it is refreshing to see that such an inspiring transformation can be realized with a small budget.’

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
and the functionality and sustainability of the re-designation
The water tower prize was specifically established to promote the quality re-use of the many water towers in the region by highlighting good examples
and this tower and its redesign by RVArchitecture became a much-lauded illustration of that vision
Situated on an embankment outside Nieuw Lekkerland, a village in western Netherlands
the water tower boasts of impressive views
wherein one side of the tower looks out to the lek river while the other side overlooks the quintessential dutch landscape encompassing the many windmills of Kinderdijk
The tower stands as a distinctive landmark owing to the white colour and its position at the foot of the Lekdijk
marking the beginning of its built-up area on the east side of Nieuw-Lekkerland
the structure's ownership was transferred to the families of the two cousins in the year 2013
aligned with their thoughts and perspectives while operating on a frugal budget
The transformation involved revamping and replanning the available interior space of the existing 34-meter-high tower having a concrete hollow-bottom reservoir with a volume of 400 cubic meter
This sizeable structural assembly is placed on a concrete support frame with a closed hexagonal substructure
The project eventually came to be centred around two major concerns: the first being the configuration of the building to break the imagination of a stereotypical residence
while celebrating an unusual living in the inside of a water tower
and the second being the creation and placement of fenestrations on its six-faced surfaces without losing its original character
Following extensive research and multiple findings
led by project architects Ruud Visser and Fumi Hoshino
concluded that the new openings were to "dance around" the existing diamond-shaped windows in order to conserve the central character of the tower
However the new windows were arranged in relation to their respective floor plans
and not on the basis of their earlier zigzag pattern which was earlier independent of any considerations to the inner volume of the water tank
the hexagonal tower had to accommodate housing for two small families
while also keeping a check on the local building regulations
The substructure of the tower originally had three floors
and the new floors were laid between the existing floors
resulting in a total of six floors after renovation
The typical square windows were strategically placed just above or below the new floors while also considering the views offered
also manifesting in characteristic interior details for the two homes
while walking up a pair of staircases through the tower opens to the upper dwelling
Owing to the windows being derivative of a "rotating layout"
while one of the houses overlooks the river
the other offers a view towards the polder landscapes
These specific views have in turn been crucial in dictating the orientation of the floorplan to which the layout and construction have been completed
The design has thereby transformed the project in an impactful way to embrace living engagements and interactions for the owners of the water tower
On the overall transformative process and approach carried by RVArchitecture
the Dutch Watertowerprize jury commented that “the basis of the successful transformation is formed by the powerful design of Ruud Visser and Fumi Hoshino
Huge floor-to-floor windows looking out over the river De Lek and the Dutch polder landscape contribute to the quality of the spaces inside and fit perfectly with the robust appearance of the water tower
It is refreshing to see that such an inspiring transformation can be realized with a small budget”

The province of Zuid-Holland have issued 3.5 million euros worth of fines to transport company Qbuzz, because the company did not meet the requirements as was agreed. Qbuzz controls the bus transport in the northern part of Zuid-Holland since the end of last year, this includes cities like Alphen aan de Rijn, Gouda, and Leiden. The first months went chaotically under Qbuzz stewardship
with many busses being canceled or not on time
“Qbuzz left passengers in the cold in a figurative and literal sense
Travelers could not count on reliable and accessible public transport,” said the province of Zuid-Holland
who pay Qbuzz to control the bus transport
Deputy Frederik Zevenbergen announced in January that Qbuzz was going to be fined for the “false start.” The board has now determined the fine amount
but I think they are more than justified,” said Zevenbergen
That is what we hold Qbuzz accountable for.”
Qbuzz has to pay 2.3 million euros because the busses did not meet the requirements
The company used touring buses and dozens of diesel busses because almost 110 of the 140 electric busses order from Iveco were not delivered on time
The replacement busses did not have systems that could show traffic information and were also inaccessible for people with a wheelchair or stroller at times
Qbuzz also failed to come through on their promise for emissions free transport
Around eight percent of the trips were canceled in the first few weeks of Qbuzz taking control of the public transport. Of the busses that did drive, almost half left too early or more than three minutes later. Both percentages are far below the pre determined requirements
Qbuzz are forced to pay 1.15 million euros for these failures
The province will use the money to make improvements to public transport in the region
one example is the renovation of bus stops
“We will continue to work with Qbuzz on improving the service to the level that was promised to us and the passengers,” said Zevenbergen
Qbuzz director Annemarie Zuidberg apologized for the problematic start at the end of January. Zuid-Holland is not only fining Qbuzz but is also considering "partially suspending" the monthly operating contribution
Qbuzz will likely receive almost 47 million euros this year
Approximately 5 percent of Qbuzz's scheduled bus trips in the northern part of Zuid-Holland have been canceled in recent weeks
This is much higher than the contractual obligation of a maximum of 0.2 percent of culpable trip cancellations
The province of Zuid-Holland is contemplating fining Qbuzz for this
Qbuzz took over bus transport last month for Alphen aan de Rijn, Gouda, Leiden, and Katwijk from Arriva, but the services have been chaotic thus far
Passengers have waited for buses that did not come
There have also been stories of drivers going the wrong way or not knowing the route at all
One of the reasons that they expect this is because around 15 extra buses are going to be used in the coming time
who only completed 31 of the 140 electric buses that were ordered on time
forced Qbuzz to find last-minute alternatives like touring cars
Dozens of diesel buses have been driving for Qbuzz temporarily
The transport company has been getting a lot of complaints from customers about buses not appearing on time or at all
“We are using temporary buses which lack IT equipment
This can mean that the real-time travel information in our travel planners is incorrect
We are aware of the impact of this,” said a spokesperson
“We are doing everything we can to solve this as quickly as possible by using new buses.”
Qbuzz hopes to achieve "more reliable bus routes" by adjusting driver schedules
These changes will take effect at the end of January
some journeys will be canceled on some lines
it offers "considerably more" rides in this area every day than in the previous concession period
has officially been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
marking a significant milestone for the sweet’s global popularity
The stroopwafel entry was officially added in December
According to the Oxford English Dictionary
stroopwafel is a "sweet snack consisting of two small
circular waffles sandwiched together with a syrup or caramel filling." The treat and the word for it back date to 1974
In its commentary
the OED added to that by saying that a stroopwafel "is best warmed atop a hot tea or coffee
It originated in the Netherlands but is now popular in many other parts of the world too (including
The word "stroopwafel" first appeared in American media in 1995, according to the Oxford English Dictionary
An advertisement in the Akron Beacon Journal
described the treat as "Just arrived from Holland
these syrup waffles go particularly well with good coffees or teas."
The OED's timeline further includes a 2019 mention in Time Out London
where the treat was described alongside the vibrant cultural scene in the Netherlands
"It's tulip season; the cracks of the city are bursting with flowers; the air is saturated with the smell of...pancakes with sugar and stroopwafels," the OED writes
The province of Zuid-Holland is considering reducing the money given to transport company Qbuzz for bus transport in the northern part of the province. The province feels that the number of bus trips being canceled is too high
has been considering imposing a fine on Qbuzz for some time and is now also considering "partially suspending" the monthly operating contribution
The transport commissioner wrote this in a letter to the Provincial Council, who will debate Qbuzz’s chaotic start in the Zuid-Holland Noord public transport area on Wednesday
Qbuzz took over the bus transport from Arriva midway through December for cities like Alphen aan de Rijn
Qbuzz was forced to improvise with diesel buses and touring buses after orders of electric buses were not delivered on time
This has led to many canceled bus rides and buses that did not arrive on time
Zevenbergen has described the current situation as “untenable” and wants a plan of improvement from Qbuzz by next Monday
This must include a plan for how the transport company will ensure that less than one percent of the rides are canceled
The province reported that 7.5 percent of the trips were canceled at the start of this week
despite the fact that Qbuzz had promised to have their services in order by January 27
Zuid-Holland will pay 46.9 million euros to Qbuzz this year
although that fee can change based on national index numbers
The province pays an advance payment halfway through each month
but Zevenbergen wants to suspend part of this if there is no "substantial improvement" in the short term
should not have to pay for services that are not delivered," according to the commissioner
Qbuzz claims that the issues are mostly related to the delay in deliveries of electric buses and the old vehicles that are now being used for the rides
“The issue of not using enough drivers seems to be the biggest reason for the regular cancelations.”
apologized to the province on Wednesday for the chaotic month
the public transport is unreliable at this time
I give my sincerest apologies on behalf of Qbuzz for this,” Zuidberg said
“That people are sometimes literally left waiting in the cold has led to stories that affect us deeply
I am literally lying awake because of this.”
Zuidberg explained some of the reasons for the issues by Qbuzz
"Making public transport more sustainable requires a lot from the entire sector
also due to the complexity of rules and laws.”
the new Environmental Act means it takes longer to obtain permits
including for intended new bus depots in Leiden and Gouda
due to a full power grid (grid congestion) in almost all of Zuid-Holland
it is not possible to get a stronger electricity connection at some existing depots
"No power means that zero-emission buses cannot charge and drive at that location," according to the director
The new village to be built in the Zuid-Holland municipality of Zuidplas has been given the name Cortelande
announced the name on Saturday at the site where an information center about the new construction project in the polder area will be built
The residents of Zuidplas cast more votes for Cortelande than for the other two proposals
marks the start of a new chapter for our municipality,” says Weber
The municipality had launched a competition to find a name for the new village of 8,000 homes
A jury headed by the mayor selected three suggestions
This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of our community,” mayor Weber said
a reference to an earlier name for the polder (Cortlandt)
A historical association had campaigned for this name
a boundary post to mark the borders of the villages in the area was once known as 'pael van Cortelande'
now consists of four villages: Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel
The construction plans for the center of the Zuidplaspolder had the working title The Fifth Village
The municipal council approved the zoning plan in May
but 22 parties - including Rijkswaterstaat and Hoogheemraadschap Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard - have appealed to the Council of State
thinks that the zoning plan does not pay enough attention to “good and safe water management” and the future consequences of climate change
The case is not expected to be heard for another year
Zuidplas is continuing to work on the plans
The lowest point of the Netherlands is located in the Zuidplaspolder
The transition from Arriva to Qbuzz in Friesland and Zuid-Holland Noord has caused significant disruptions for bus passengers across the regions
leaving tens of thousands of travelers inconvenienced
Bus services were hit with delays of up to 45 minutes
and drivers unfamiliar with routes frequently stopped at incorrect locations
Qbuzz faced a shortage of nearly 100 electric buses
partially due to the bankruptcy of bus manufacturer Van Hool
Qbuzz turned to diesel buses from Berlin and Reykjavik
additional coach services were employed to fill in the gaps
Drivers from neighboring provinces like Drenthe and Groningen were also called in to assist
public transport in Zuid-Holland Noord was made free until the weekend of January 6
the ongoing issues have raised concerns about the timing of such transitions
with provincial officials and the travelers' association Rover calling for a shift to off-peak seasons
The bus service changes in Friesland and Zuid-Holland Noord were part of a broader shift in the Dutch public transportation sector
Qbuzz took over routes previously operated by Arriva
but numerous problems arose as buses and drivers struggled to meet demand
Qbuzz promised a 20 percent increase in service hours but failed to deliver
has suggested that such transitions be moved to the quieter summer months or the May holiday period to allow for smoother adjustments
“It’s a more practical time for both operators and passengers
Provincial governments have already begun to consider alternative solutions
Noord-Brabant has decided to implement changes in the summer months starting in 2029
believing it will reduce the risk of disruptions
Qbuzz has also expressed support for this approach
acknowledging the added complexity of transitioning to electric buses and integrating new technologies
“Concessions have become more complicated with electric buses and IT systems
so we are in favor of a summer or May transition,” a spokesperson for Qbuzz said
The Leiden city council has formally demanded improvements to the regional bus services
calling the current state of affairs unacceptable
In an open letter to the province of Zuid-Holland
representatives from ten political parties expressed their dissatisfaction with the ongoing issues since Qbuzz took over the public transportation contract in the northern part of the province in mid-December
The council emphasized the urgency of resolving the situation
stating that "it is of paramount importance that the situation improves significantly and quickly."
and Katwijk have faced significant disruptions
Travelers have experienced long waits at bus stops with no buses in sight
while others have been delayed for extended periods
There are also reports of drivers who are unfamiliar with their routes
the police impounded a bus in Leiden for displaying an incorrect license plate
The Leiden council’s letter also conveyed their frustration with the chaos surrounding the transition
urging Zuid-Holland’s transport commissioner
is responsible for overseeing regional transportation and has already indicated its displeasure with Qbuzz’s rocky start
The province is considering imposing fines on the transport provider in response to the numerous complaints received from across the service area
some experts argue that the real issue lies in the broader shortage of bus drivers
which is not likely to be solved simply by changing the timing of transitions
explained to AD that the entire European transport industry is struggling with a critical shortage of drivers
“The demand for more buses is understandable
but we need to recognize that this shortage won’t be fixed overnight,” Kamminga said
and that only adds to the risks of delays.”
The situation has also highlighted the tensions between operators and provinces
Arriva refused to transfer bus depots to Qbuzz
“We must prevent this from becoming a bargaining chip for the outgoing operator,” said Zevenbergen
Freek Bos from Rover also noted that transport companies often make overly ambitious promises in their bids for new contracts
and basic services like bus information must be up to par,” he told AD
The transition issues have led to calls for reconsidering the market-driven approach to public transportation
The trade union FNV has questioned the effectiveness of privatizing public transport
not a profit model,” said FNV official Edwin Kuiper
where issues are less common due to consistent public transport providers

The Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout is a group of buildings in an exceptional human-made landscape in which the centuries-long battle of the Dutch people to drain parts of their territory and protect them against further inundation is dramatically demonstrated through the survival of all the major elements of the complex system that was devised for this purpose
Construction of hydraulic works for the drainage of land for agriculture and settlement began in the Middle Ages and has continued uninterruptedly to the present day
The property illustrates all the typical features associated with this technology: polders
high and low-lying drainage and transport channels for superfluous polder water
2 discharge sluices and 2 Water Board Assembly Houses
The beautifully preserved mills can be divided into three categories: 8 round brick ground-sailers
The installations in the Kinderdijk-Elshout area demonstrate admirably the outstanding contribution made by the people in Netherlands to the technology of handling water
The landscape is striking in its juxtaposition of its horizontal features
with the vertical rhythms of the mill system
There is no drainage network of this kind or of comparable antiquity anywhere else in the Netherlands or in the world
Criterion (i): The Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout is an outstanding human-made landscape that bears powerful testimony to human ingenuity and fortitude over nearly a millennium in draining and protecting an area by the development and application of hydraulic technology
Criterion (ii): The Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout with its historic polder areas
outlet sluices and Water Board Assembly Houses is an outstanding example of the development of Dutch drainage techniques which were copied and adapted in many parts of the world
Criterion (iv): The Mill Network at Kinderdijk-Elshout is an extremely ingenious hydraulic system which still functions today and which throughout the ages made it possible to settle and cultivate a large area of peat land
It is nationally and internationally the only example on this scale
making it a unique and outstanding example of an architectural ensemble as well as a cultural landscape which typifies the Netherlands and illustrates a significant stage in human history
The area retains all the relevant features such as the polders with drainage channels and dikes

with its historic ‘high and low polder areas with natural drainage’
outlet sluices and Water Board Assembly Houses is practically unchanged
typically Dutch and characteristic features of the landscape and the environment

The authenticity in workmanship and setting of the structures and in the distinctive character and integrity of the human-made landscape is very high
No changes have been made to the functional hydraulic relationships between drainage machines
and rivers since the sixteen mills of De Nederwaard and De Overwaard were built in 1738 and 1740 respectively
and so the authenticity of the system is also high
The reservoir system of both is also intact
the lower reservoir of De Nederwaard dating back to 1369 and that of De Overwaard to 1365
was in keeping with the techniques used at the time the mills were constructed
Authentic materials will also be used in the restorations
which is headed by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands
and the Waardhuis building are listed as national heritage sites under the 1988 Monuments and Historic Buildings Act [Monumentenwet 1988]
the area was designated a conservation area [beschermd dorpsgezicht] pursuant to Article 35 of the 1988 Monuments and Historic Buildings Act
the Kinderdijk-Elshout World Heritage property is a protected nature reserve under the Nature Conservancy Act [Natuurbeschermingswet]
and is covered by Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the Conservation of Wild Birds
The Provincial government’s Spatial Planning Decree lays down rules for the mills that are meant to guarantee open exposure to the wind and a permanent view of the mills
Restrictions have been placed on the height of any buildings
trees or other plants within a 400-metre radius of the mills (the mill biotope)
The Provincial Spatial Planning Decree is binding for both individuals and municipalities
Most of the land in the Municipal Zoning Plan for the Rural Area of Nieuw-Lekkerland is a designated nature conservation area
Building is not permitted here; any earth-moving activity may only be carried out after a permit has been obtained
The southern part of the Kinderdijk-Elshout World Heritage property is part of the Municipality of Alblasserdam; most of it has been zoned as an “agricultural area with valuable natural and landscape features”
Water and dike management is in the hands of the Rivierenland Water Board
The protection arrangements are considered to be effective
the Kinderdijk World Heritage Foundation [Stichting Werelderfgoed Kinderdijk; SWEK]
has held a 30-year lease on the property’s nineteen mills
Its goal is to exercise effective management according to a set of uniform standards
The Wisboom Pumping Station was refurbished and opened in 2011 as a visitors’ centre
One of the mills is also open for visitors
The Municipal Zoning Plan for the Rural Area of Molenwaard was updated in 2013
The new plan pays particular attention to conservation areas and the World Heritage property
To face spatial challenges at the property
It forms the basis for the new Management Plan and future developments
Plans are being considered for a new and larger visitor centre that allows for better visitor control and guidance and will help increase public awareness of the importance of the property
The integration in the landscape gets particular attention
Ilvy Njiokiktjien isn’t interested in celebrating her birthday
and making certain to thank everyone—for her
being the center of attention is an overwhelming and unwelcome experience
It’s not exactly the background one would expect from a photographer who, over the course of a couple of years, photographed 140 birthday celebrations, from a first to a 100th, in the Netherlands. The project, which became the book Cream Cake and Paper Chains, The Netherlands in 100 Birthdays that was published by Schilt
began when Njiokiktjien was named the national photographer of the Netherlands in 2013
The responsibilities that went with the honor were twofold: to create a body of work that represented Dutch culture and to act as a type of ambassador of Dutch photography
Njiokiktjien decided to focus on the theme of family and from there narrowed it down to birthdays
She announced on national television that she was looking to find people to document and received thousands of emails
many of which she quickly realized wouldn’t work
“Dutch people like it when something is free,” Njiokiktjien said
“They would get free pictures and some of them also wanted free advertising for their companies
so that was definitely one of the reasons they contacted me
I had to look hard to find the ones who wanted to do it to show Dutch culture.”
She quickly realized she needed to be extremely organized if she wanted to get as broad a look as possible of Dutch culture that covered heritage
and even went door to door trying to find very specific people
and I would just take it one person at a time,” she said
“I would put it out on Facebook that I was looking for a Moroccan guy in the north of the Netherlands between age 40 and 50 whose birthday is in the next eight months
and it would be great if he were living on a houseboat.”
most adults celebrate their birthdays on Saturday evenings while children often have parties on Wednesdays
Njiokiktjien quickly realized her initial goal of photographing 100 birthdays over a year would be impossible
She also had to find the right parties to attend
although she knew she wanted to include a few popular events such as swimming or bowling parties for children
Njiokiktjien said once she left her parents’ home at 17
she essentially stopped having lavish birthday parties
so different from Dutch people,’ ” she said
“Dutch people don’t invite a lot of friends over to help celebrate; they like to keep things to themselves a little bit.”
Njiokiktjien turned 30; her boyfriend threw her a surprise party
“I wouldn’t have celebrated it myself,” she said
“That was the feeling that came to me while I was photographing the parties: Why do they want to celebrate?”
the young architects derive their approach which uses simplicity combined with functionality from the works of renowned architects
such as lina bo bardi and aldo van eyck — these references can be traced through the color selection and very gentle and exact use of materials.
three main materials were used in the exterior: western red cedar
the design of house 1 serves as a perfect base for a young and modern family where three design principles are to start with: the kitchen is the central core
horizontal and vertical connections are open and visible constructions work together with tangible textures
stone base is topped with a wooden construction
the landscape and the beautiful view can be seen from the spacious and naturally exposed kitchen which extends all the way up to the roof
the living room is completely different: the dimly lighted room is meant for quiet and intimate moments with the family
the chimney separates the rooms and functions as a natural backbone throughout the house
it connects the garden to the living area with its in- and outside fireplace
these important features all revolve around the concept of maximizing human potential
which both lina bo bardi and aldo van eyck used in their architectural concepts
the tangible materials give the house a feeling of old-fashioned craftsmanship
the separation of the living areas by functional and natural features creates a different purpose for all rooms in the house. ‘we tried to create the home in such a way that all of the rooms have a different atmosphere for varying tendencies,’ explains namelok team
‘it takes the experience of famous architects to adhere a different character to every space in the house as to make the family feel at home during any time of the day.’
the difference in lightness between the two levels is also shown by the color of the window frames
the used materials go together to form a minimalistic
the coarse plaster and frost grey bricks have a simple design but add tangible textures to the inside and outside of the house and chimney — the vertical western red cedar slats add warmth and define and unite the parts of the house because of the difference in color and texture
the massive chimney is equipped with an open fireplace outside and a gas fireplace inside
view from the second-floor bridge down the stairs
the light grey brick chimney connects every space: outside
large glass sliding doors open to the garden and the outside dining area
the beautiful window seat is an ideal spot for relaxation in the kitchen area
the en-suite bedroom provides the best view over the dutch polder landscape
the upstairs lavatory is accessible from the en-suite bathroom as well as the children’s bathroom through two sliding doors
the minimalist glass parapet ensures a visible connection between the levels

2014 — Two Netherlands companies are using this week’s OTC event in Houston to unveil a solution that increases the window for offshore helicopter landings in severe weather conditions
Bayards Aluminium of Nieuw-Lekkerland has teamed with Barge Master of Capelle an der IJssel to design the first aluminum Motion Compensated Helideck
The new Motion Compensated Helideck (MCH) is driven by three actuators compensating two translations (sway and heave) and one rotation (roll) of the vessel on which it is installed
This ensures that the platform stays in an earth-fixed steady position and that the influence of sea induced vessel motions will no longer be a limiting factor for offshore operations

Alberto Aleman Zubieta is the latest backhoe dredger designed
The vessel is touted as the largest of its kind in the world and was delivered following a trial period of 30 days on the Panama Canal
construction and delivery of the vessel was signed by its previous owner with IHC Global Production in April 2011
Its keel was laid in December 2011 and the construction was launched at the shipyard of NMC in Nieuw-Lekkerland in September 2012
The backhoe dredger will carry out the dredging works for the $5.25bn Panama Canal Expansion project
The backhoe dredger has also been designed to carry out maintenance works for the canal
The backhoe dredger measures 62.2m in length and 23m in breadth
It has a depth of 5.1m and draught of 3.2m
It has a maximum dredging depth of 19.5m with a backhoe bucket of 31.5m³
is installed with a maximum power capacity of 3,000kW
and provides daytime accommodation for ten people
The vessel features a diesel-hydraulic modified Komatsu PC5500 excavator and is designed to accommodate the modified Komatsu PC8000 in future
The vessel is equipped with three spud hoist winches
three deck cranes and two thrusters with power of 300kW each
The equipments are controlled using hydraulic power
The vessel is also equipped with five box coolers with anti-fouling systems
The Komatsu dredger PC5500 onboard the vessel has an installed power of 1,880kW with a fuel tank capacity of 10,800l and an operating weight of 49,000kg
The vessel’s five box coolers incorporate anti-fouling (AF) systems to prevent the growth of barnacles and mussels
which can prevent the heat transfer process
The design involves a copper anode which is connected to a control panel and attached horizontally under the cooling tubes of the box cooler
The box coolers and anti-fouling systems were supplied as a complete assembly
which cut down the installation time and eliminated fabrication work at the yard
The hydraulic system onboard the barge were designed
manufactured and commissioned by Hycom Hydac
while the five box coolers were supplied by Blokland Non-Ferro and the anti-fouling systems provided by Cathelco
Leiv Eiriksson is a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) that was delivered in May 2010
which is also known as the Third Set of Locks Project
is being implemented to double the capacity of the Panama Canal and enable larger ships to pass through it
The project has generated approximately 27,000 direct jobs so far
The dredging of the Culebra Cut (formerly Gaillard Cut) forms part of the project for which the current backhoe dredger was designed
The deepening and widening works for this narrowest portion of the canal’s navigational channel were completed in March 2013
with about 3.2 million cubic meters of materials dredged
The backhoe dredger will operate at the Culebra Cut and neighbouring sections of the canal to dredge blasted rock and heavy soil
The vessel will further maintain the canal along the Culebra Cut as the section is most prone to landslides

The province of Zuid-Holland has given eight municipalities
a warning that if they do not house enough refugees with a temporary residence permit
then the province will do it for them and charge them for it
and Zoeterwoude were sent a letter with this message
These eight municipalities are lagging when it comes to housing refugees with temporary residence permits
The government decides every six months how many residency permit holders need to be given shelter
They decide this number based on the number of residents in a municipality
Provinces are allowed to intervene when municipalities miss their target from the government for the fourth time in a row
Zuid-Holland also gave Barendrecht and Goeree-Overflakkee a last warning like this in the last few years
This led to both municipalities reaching their target
A spokesperson for the province said that Zuid-Holland has never had to find housing for the permit holders on the municipality costs
The Hague was around 400 homes behind when it came to their target for housing for residency permit holders on January 1
Leiden still had over 50 people that they had to find accommodation for
The municipalities in Zuid-Holland had to find housing for 5,600 residency permit holders
but they have only been able to do so for almost 3,400 people
The other residency holders are waiting in asylum seeker centers for a home
Some municipalities give residency permit holders priority when allocating social housing
Residency holders are also regularly housed in flexible housing or temporary living spaces in vacant buildings
The National Digital Infrastructure Inspectorate (RDI) has fined Vodafone 2.25 million euros for not properly securing its wiretapping system
which could contain state secrets or criminal information
did not meet the legal requirements in several areas
wiretapping is only allowed under strict conditions and on the orders of the Public Prosecution Service (OM) or the intelligence services AIVD or MIVD
Dutch law also sets strict requirements on telecom providers’ wiretapping systems because these systems can contain sensitive information
Telecom companies must properly secure the physical space in which their wiretapping system is located
and prevent information from the system from reaching unauthorized persons
Vodafone’s security plan did not meet the requirements
The telecom provider also did not properly screen the personnel who had access to the system
“A large number of them lacked an adequate job description
and a certificate of good conduct,” the inspectorate said
The physical security of the system itself was also inadequate
making it vulnerable to unauthorized access
it stressed that its investigation found no indications that anyone gained unauthorized access to wiretapping data
Vodafone has since taken action to get its security in order and eliminate the risks of unauthorized access to wiretapping data
The nationwide four-day strike by regional transport workers that was set to begin in the north of the Netherlands on Thursday has been put on hold
The FNV labor union had given regional transport employers an ultimatum to respond to the union's demands for a new collective bargaining agreement by Sunday
the FNV said it wanted to continue ongoing talks with employers
The dispute revolves around one of the two collective bargaining agreements in regional transport
which applies to some 1,300 employees of companies such as Qbuzz
the unions demand that wages automatically increase in line with inflation
Workers on regional trains in the north of the Netherlands were supposed to get the strike started on Thursday
when collective bargaining negotiations failed and stalled
we will organize a strike on the regional railroad in Friesland
the regional railroad in the province of Groningen will follow and on Monday
the regional railroad in southeastern Drenthe," said Edwin Kuiper
More strikes were expected to follow after that
but the unions were still debating details on Friday
the announced strikes would have affected Arriva trains
Kuiper previously stated that employers have "again and again" failed to fulfill their agreements
They announced the four-day strike when employers missed a deadline from the FNV
the employers presented their latest wage offer
"They indicated they would present a better wage offer
all the union's proposals were swept off the table," the union representative said last Thursday
An Arriva spokesperson had called the planned strike unfortunate
"We were satisfied with the talks that were held
and that they are now being broken off again
We would have liked to negotiate a little longer and we still hope that we can return to the negotiating table soon," the spokesperson said
Passengers who had to deal with a new bus operator last month have been complaining about delays and cancellations
The passenger association believes travelers affected by the problems should be compensated
This mainly concerns parts of the country where a carrier has been replaced with the introduction of a new timetable
the Israeli bus company Egged Bus Systems (EBS) took over Connexxion's transportation contract
EBS will be fined for substandard services in regional transport in the Zaanstreek region by the organization overseeing Amsterdam regional transportation services
EBS took over the concession for bus transport in Zaanstreek-Waterland just a month ago
the Zaanstreek-Waterland advisory committee expressed its serious concerns about the implementation of the transport contract
late or overcrowded and travel information was incorrect
because the company has not yet been informed of it
A spokesperson acknowledged that the company is facing a major shortage of bus drivers
That is why the number of journeys in the region will be reduced for the time being
Passengers can then take the bus less often
The adjusted timetable will remain in force until at least the end of March
It is especially important that EBS delivers what they promised as quickly as possible
Purmerend lawmaker Coen Lageveen recently wrote in a letter on behalf of the Zaanstreek-Waterland advisory committee to the Amsterdam transport authorities
The committee has demanded that the bus company from now on report twice a month on the reliability of the service
EBS is also experiencing problems on bus lines elsewhere
services are also regularly canceled due to staff shortages
a delivery of new electric buses was delayed
The company is "doing all it can" to resolve the problems
"The new buses are coming in little by little and we are busy recruiting staff."
Arriva took over bus transport from Keolis
including the Zutphen-Hengelo-Oldenzaal railway line
Changes in carriers have often caused complaints in the past
The problems seem to be exacerbated this year by a staff shortage that has been causing bus cancellations in almost the entire country for some time
"It is strange that transport companies have still not mastered the trick of changing a concession," said Rover director Freek Bos
Drivers and passengers using motorized scooters will be required to wear a helmet starting on 1 January
The Dutch government announced on Thursday that the new law affects those using a scooter
and a top speed of up to 25 kilometers per hour
The Cabinet expects the helmet rule to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries
People are already required to wear helmets if those vehicles
categorized as a “snorfiets,” are used on the roadways and not bike paths
Amsterdam and Utrecht have banned these vehicles from bike paths in many areas
or speed pedelec helmet can be fined 100 euros once the law takes effect
Administrative fees can push the total cost even higher
Although some e-bikes can also reach a top speed of 25 kilometers per hour
those bicycles were not mentioned as being covered by the new law
The province of Limburg wants to give Arriva permission to put Croatian drivers who do not speak the Dutch language behind the wheel of regional buses
Although the province has a requirement that every bus driver "understands and speaks the Dutch language," the public transport company will probably be allowed to temporarily deviate from this policy
The regional transport company has been struggling with a shortage of personnel
Arriva wants to run a pilot project where it hires three or four drivers from Croatia to work on bus routes in Venlo and the surrounding area
as the province included in its schedule of requirements for transport proposals
That states that all staff who have contact with passengers must be able to speak and understand Dutch
They must also understand English and German
and preferably be able to speak those languages
"The province of Limburg intends to agree to this proposed temporary solution," said a spokesperson for Jasper Kuntzelaers
the deputy in charge of public transport on the province's Executive Board
He pointed to the "long-standing challenges for Arriva to attract sufficient staff" and the consequences of understaffing
"The province of Limburg believes it is important that passengers are faced with as few journey cancellations as possible."
it will make a condition that the drivers in question take part in a Dutch course
The same collective labor agreements must also apply to them as to Arriva's regular drivers
The transport company said that the Croatian drivers will receive "a good orientation" so that they can be deployed quickly and in a positive manner
we are continuing to work tirelessly to train and recruit new colleagues
with the aim of connecting them to Arriva with permanent employment," said a spokesperson for the company
"The fact is that we simply don't have enough people to be able to offer a reliable timetable," she said
More than 50 people are currently training to become bus drivers at the regional transport company
Arriva expects that they will have the necessary driving license in three months

Hun gemiddelde oppervlakte bedraagt bijna 1 500 vierkante kilometer
