Residents of Nieuwegein have reacted with grief after an 11-year-old girl was fatally stabbed in their neighborhood. Flowers and candles have been placed at the site of the attack.
“It’s terrible. She was only 11 years old. It’s just awful,” a neighbour told NOS. Many locals expressed shock that such a violent crime had taken place in their area
“It’s always peaceful here, and then this happened,” said a child from the neighborhood. “I played with her a lot
but I wasn’t outside that day because I was at my mother’s house.”
The girl was on her way to visit a friend when a man suddenly attacked her with a knife
A 29-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident in a nearby garden
Police have not disclosed further details about the suspect or his motive
Police spokesperson Wim Hoonhout said on the radio program Met het Oog op Morgen that it was “very likely” the suspect and victim “did not know each other at all.”
Several neighbors stated they had previously reported the suspect’s erratic behavior. “People had already warned about him before,” Van Zwieten said. “Even on Thursday evening and Friday morning
people called the authorities because he was outside shouting again.”
“The impact here is huge,” said Pieter van Zwieten, a resident who has lived in the neighborhood for 50 years. “It’s usually a very quiet area with long-time residents. There are always children playing outside
Van Zwieten witnessed the immediate aftermath. “I was in the garden and heard a lot of noise. It went on for a while, so I went to look. I saw the child lying there,” he said.
The incident took place directly under a ceramic sculpture of children playing. Van Zwieten placed a small mourning band on one of the figures. “The child’s father was inconsolable. He was screaming and crying,” he said.
Photos from the scene show a knife found on the roof of a shed near Anemoonstraat. Police have not yet confirmed whether it is connected to the attack.
The suspect is being held under full restrictions, meaning he is only allowed contact with his attorney.

Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein partially collapsed
outside normal visiting hours, prompting a swift response from emergency services
Firefighters and police were on the scene to conduct thorough searches and secure the structure
with all medical services running as scheduled
The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation
Structural engineers and safety inspectors are working to determine the factors that led to the incident
Initial reports suggest that the collapse affected a small portion of the garage
causing minimal damage to surrounding vehicles
Antonius Hospital's management expressed relief that there were no casualties and thanked emergency responders for their prompt action
"Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of everyone on our premises
We are cooperating fully with the authorities to understand the cause of this incident and to prevent any future occurrences," said a hospital spokesperson
Patients and visitors are advised to use alternative parking facilities provided by the hospital while the affected area remains closed
Further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available
A 29-year-old man was arrested near the scene and is currently under investigation in connection with the incident
with a medical team arriving shortly after the attack
The Anemoonstraat area was cordoned off for investigation
and multiple police vehicles were seen on the scene
Authorities have not disclosed any details about the circumstances surrounding the stabbing or the relationship between the victim and the suspect
The police initially reported that the girl was in critical condition
but no further information has been made available regarding his potential motive or any prior connections to the victim
with law enforcement continuing to gather information from the scene and witnesses
“We lost an 11-year-old girl who will never come back
And a psychiatric patient now sitting in a cell,” said De Roos
the deputy chief of the Midden-Nederland police
If politicians do not make fundamental choices to improve psychiatric care
The attack occurred Saturday afternoon as the young victim, Sohani, was walking to meet a friend. Witnesses described a sudden and brutal assault in broad daylight. Police were alerted at 2:47 p.m
He was known for shouting in the streets late at night
One neighbor told NRC he had been chased by L
he was reportedly told that no patrol car was available
They didn’t show up,” said PVV leader Geert Wilders in the Tweede Kamer on Tuesday
De Roos dismissed accusations of police negligence
We’ve been saying for a decade that this system needs to be addressed.”
Officers had responded to previous calls about L.

it gets passed to local teams and mental health services.”
had been flagged in the Zorg- en Veiligheidshuis
He was registered there a month ago after moving from Haaglanden to Nieuwegein
“We talked about him in meetings with healthcare workers,” De Roos said
De Roos argued that police officers are being asked to manage psychiatric cases without the necessary expertise or resources
“We want to focus on investigating criminal gangs
But we are being pulled away by these incidents involving psychiatric patients
Officers are not trained to make mental health assessments.”
including a shortage of psychiatric professionals available 24/7 to assess individuals immediately
a fragmented care system that leaves responsibility unclear as patients are shuffled between institutions
and a lack of appropriate housing for high-risk individuals who cannot safely live in family neighborhoods
The Netherlands has shifted toward outpatient psychiatric care over the past decade
De Roos said this transition has left a gap in care
increasing police involvement and incidents of violence
“Arrest teams are now frequently deployed for cases involving mentally ill individuals
especially with patients who need care,” he said
The case has drawn comparisons to past failures in the mental health system

“How do we ensure this time is different?” De Roos asked
“It’s up to politicians to make those decisions
our officers are dealing with people in crisis
we are being blamed for a problem we cannot solve.”
The Tweede Kamer has requested a formal response to the case
emphasized the urgency: “If nothing changes
people will point fingers at the police or mental health services
Police are investigating whether warnings were issued about the mental state of the 29-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing an 11-year-old girl in Nieuwegein on Saturday. Authorities said Sunday they are checking reports that the suspect displayed erratic behavior in the days before the attack
“We have heard indications that the man may have exhibited disturbed behavior earlier in the week and that there were reports about it,” a police spokesperson said Sunday
“We are checking whether that is correct.”
The 29-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the attack
which took place in front of other children
It remains unclear whether he and the victim knew each other
“The scenario that they did not know each other is realistic,” police said
Police also corrected earlier information about the suspect’s background
He has both Dutch and Moroccan nationality
Police have not confirmed whether she was also Dutch national
A student of the Anna van Rijn College in Nieuwegein died this week while playing a choking game, the school announced in a letter to parents and guardians that RTV Utrecht has seen
The police said that there were no indications of a crime being committed and spoke of a “tragic incident.”
The school announced on Tuesday that one of its students had died in a fatal accident
the school informed parents and guardians about what happened
children suffocate themselves or each other by pinching a carotid artery
The idea is to let go just before someone loses consciousness
resulting in a euphoric rush that can be addictive
warns that the game is extremely dangerous and can cause brain damage and death
The child who died was a 3 VWO student at the Anna van Rijn College
the parents asked that the cause of death be shared
“They think it is important to warn other parents and to draw attention to the life-threatening risks of this or similar challenges.”
School director Wouter Luckel told RTV Utrecht that everyone at the school is shocked
All that remains is for us to do the things we have to do in the best possible way
And I think that we have managed to do that together,” he said
The school sent information to the parents on how they can discuss what happened with their children and warn against the dangers of the choking game
It is also offering extra support to the students and parents
A memorial was set up at school where students can express their condolences if they wish
The police arrested two men on suspicion of money laundering in Nieuwegein last Thursday
the officers caught one man handing a bag to another
officers noticed a vehicle with German license plates behaving suspiciously on the A2
They decided to follow the car when it left the highway near Nieuwegein and turned into a residential neighborhood
The driver of the car turned out to have a meeting with another man
The second man retrieved a large bag from a house and handed it to the driver
The officers thought this suspicious and decided to stop the two men for a check
They found two bags containing money and several loose stacks of banknotes
a 50-year-old from Bulgaria and a 37-year-old from Lithuania
They are in custody for questioning and further investigation
A severe traffic accident on the A2 highway near Nieuwegein early Saturday morning resulted in both a truck and a van catching fire
leading to a complete closure of the road in the southbound direction
Police confirmed Saturday morning that two bodies were found inside the burned-out van
The A2 between the Oudenrijn interchange and Nieuwegein is expected to remain closed in the southbound direction until 7 p.m.
The incident occurred between the Oudenrijn interchange and Nieuwegein
Authorities received the first report at 4:15 a.m
Fire crews and emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene
where the truck driver was rescued with only minor injuries
Uncertainty surrounded the van for hours as it was completely destroyed by fire
“Emergency services are still searching for possible occupants of the van,” a spokesperson for the safety region initially stated
police confirmed that a deceased individual was found inside the van
The vehicle has been transported to a police facility for further investigation
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released
The fire was severe enough for officials to escalate the response level due to difficulties with water supply
Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control
but they remained on-site to extinguish any remaining hot spots
but authorities have not provided an estimate for when the road will reopen
The safety region has strongly urged motorists to avoid the area
as traffic disruptions are expected to last for an extended period
While the entire southbound side of the A2 remains closed
one lane in the northbound direction has also been shut down due to the severity of the accident and recovery operations
A 25-year-old man was arrested Tuesday in Nieuwegein on suspicion of involvement in a right-wing terrorism plot after authorities received a tip
the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said Friday
The man is alleged to be a follower of right-wing extremist ideology and expressed violent intentions
The criminal investigation was launched based on information provided by the AIVD
“The man was said to be a supporter of right-wing extremist ideology and sees himself as part of a battle
He was also said to have expressed violent intentions and may have been in possession of a firearm,” the OM said
investigators found a double-edged bayonet and two historical firearms which were deactivated
The items were seized along with telephones and other data carriers
He is suspected of involvement in “terrorist crimes,” the OM continued
It was not specified what the man may have been planning
or if he had started preparations to carry out any specific acts of terrorism
the intelligence from the AIVD and the evidence gathered by a national police unit was enough for prosecutors to ask that he remain in custody
During a preliminary hearing at the District Court of Rotterdam on Friday
an examining magistrate remanded the suspect to jail for at least 14 more days
the investigation is continuing as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the alleged plot and the suspect’s potential involvement in terrorist activities
His next hearing will be a closed-door arraignment before a panel of judges at the district court
who will then decide whether to keep the Nieuwegein man in pretrial detention for up to 90 more days
Authorities in the Netherlands have raised alarm bells regarding right-wing extremism and the growing threat of violent acts from people in those circles
Dutch counter-terrorism office NCTV specifically warned that such groups are becoming more willing to find justification for violence
and have become more likely to promote acts of domestic terrorism
In December, the NCTV indicated the risk of a terrorist attack in the Netherlands was “substantial,” placing the risk at nearly the most severe threat level on a five-point scale
The office warned of a “realistic” chance that an attack could occur because of how rapidly young people can be radicalized online
both in right-wing extremist groups and jihadist circles
The office said it knew of active chat groups with hundreds of participants as young as 14 who were at risk of being radicalized
The culprits and suspects of the incidents in question were often undergoing treatment in psychological care or were being supported by their municipality
Some of them had been in contact with the law in the past
The inspectorates are concerned about these incidents
Investigations will be conducted by the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate
which is a cooperation between inspection services
The inspectorates will also look into how care organizations
and police/judicial services cooperate “to offer the right care and support to people with psychological issues
The police said that they think it is “very good news” that these investigations will take place
If the inspectorates investigation identifies bottlenecks in dealing with people with psychological issues
He added that the police cannot map out whether incidents involving people with psychological issues happen regularly
but they are able to determine that it is a problem
The police did not ask for this investigation
but they have been pleading for more intense cooperation with institutions like Veilig Thuis
which offers support to victims of domestic violence and child abuse
The spokesperson explained that various processes are now underway for this collaboration
The parking garage at the St. Antonius Hospital in Nieuwegein partially collapsed on Sunday night. No one got hurt and there are no indications that anyone is under the rubble, the local security region said, NOS reports
The emergency services responded in large numbers
A specialist team combed the rubble with sniffer dogs
Camera and drone images showed nothing that could indicate victims
and the police received no missing person reports
The hospital also made contact with all staff present on Sunday
one person was in the garage when the collapse happened
The cause of the collapse is under investigation
The Q-Park paid parking garage has six floors and is used by visitors and hospital staff
Cars are still parked on several floors of the garage
Antonius Hospital postponed scheduled procedures that could wait
and staff to only come to the hospital if absolutely necessary and to use bicycles and public transport to do so
It will search for alternative parking spaces this week
Mayor Marijke van Beukering of Nieuwegein said she was shocked by the incident
“It is still unclear how this could have happened,” she said in a statement on the municipality’s website
I now want to offer the emergency services every opportunity to do their work and wish them luck and strength.”
According to AD, the garage’s structural soundness was inspected in 2017 after a similar garage collapsed at Eindhoven Airport
The inspectors concluded that the floor in Nieuwegein was safe
Authorities have confirmed the identities of the two men who died in a severe crash on the A2 near Nieuwegein early Saturday morning, according to the police. The victims were two men
The crash occurred around 4 a.m. when a van collided with a truck, causing both vehicles to catch fire. The truck driver sustained only minor injuries, but emergency responders were unable to save the two occupants of the van.
For hours after the crash, uncertainty remained about the van’s occupants due to the extent of the fire damage. Initially, emergency services were unsure if anyone was inside. On Saturday morning, police confirmed that two bodies were recovered from the burnt-out vehicle.
The accident led to a prolonged closure of the A2 between the Oudenrijn interchange and Nieuwegein as investigators worked to determine the cause. The road remained partially closed for much of Saturday. The Midden-Nederland traffic investigation team continues to examine the circumstances of the deadly crash.
Traffic around Utrecht is at a standstill again on Friday due to the closure of the A2 between Oudenrijn and the junction Everdingen. As was the case last week, traffic on the A27 is completely gridlocked. The delays were around an hour at 1:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the traffic information organization ANWB said. Traffic is also at a standstill in Nieuwegein. "You can't go anywhere around Utrecht now."
The ANWB advises drivers to go around Utrecht or choose a different travel time. But the A1 from Amsterdam to Amersfoort is also busy, said the ANWB spokesperson. "So people are going around Utrecht, but they still end up in traffic."
Dutch infrastructure Organization Rijkswaterstaat has also said that it is hectic. "We have to call on people again to avoid the Utrecht region. It is busy, really busy on the roads around Utrecht," said a spokeswoman. She also confirmed the busyness in Nieuwegein. "There is a lot of traffic, especially from Nieuwegein, towards the A27."
Measures have been implemented to combat the traffic in Nieuwegein, like the use of traffic wardens. According to a spokesperson, it has not reached the point where food and water are being handed out, which did happen last week.
The motorway A2 of Utrecht towards Den Bosch has been closed since 9 p.m. on Thursday for road works. This includes replacing asphalt and carrying out maintenance. The construction will take place up till the end of September. The road is also closed next week and on the weekends of 6 and 20 September.
The VVD in Nieuwegein wants the new asylum seeker center that is being opened on Newtonbaan in the municipality to become a shelter for refugees from the LGBTIQ+ community. VVD, the largest faction in the Nieuwegein City Council, will call on the mayor and aldermen on Thursday to make the maximum effort to ensure this happens. In the Netherlands, there are no asylum centers specifically for LGBTIQ+ people.
VVD politician Anastasia van der Lugt says that asylum seekers with an LGBTIQ+ background need a safe haven urgently. These migrants are currently being housed in asylum reception centers spread out over the country. They are often the victims of discrimination and threats "with horrible consequences like suicide as a result."
She added, "They came to the Netherlands in the hope of tolerance and understanding, but upon arrival, they find out they are being kept in an environment with their enemies." Germany already has asylum seeker centers specifically for this target group, and Van der Lugt said they are successful.
Nieuwegein has a high level of tolerance and integration and would, therefore, be well-suited to being the first municipality with an asylum center for LGBTIQ+ people, according to the VVD. The party wants the Council to agree with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) that people from the target group will arrive at Newtonbaan.
The COA does not yet have a specific policy for this. According to the LGBT Asylum support organization, there are now approximately 1,200 LGBTIQ+ people in an asylum center in the Netherlands. This group is probably much larger, but because there is no specific policy, no figures are kept.
There is room for anywhere from 85 to 112 asylum seekers and people are granted refugee status at the asylum reception facility on Newtonbaan. The first asylum seekers are expected at the facility in the middle of the year.

Irem is from Turkey and they* are starting a Master’s in Public International Law at Utrecht University
They knew that finding a room in Utrecht would be hard
so they started their search back in April
they are finally moving to a room in Nieuwegein
The search process was an emotional rollercoaster
They documented it all and shared it with DUB
If you spot a shop underneath the apartment
you might want to call that establishment to ask if it really is for rent
Another great tip is to use Kadaster’s website
I used Google Translate to navigate through their website
Despite all these efforts not to waste time with scammers
we ended up talking to one for way too long
He was advertising such a nice place that we were really hoping it was legit
our visas to enter the Netherlands were not ready yet
so we couldn’t view the apartment in person
My relatives did it on my behalf and they said the flat was OK
We even had a video chat with the landlady but
she decided not to rent for us because she never saw us in person
We were this close to closing a deal and we had our hopes high
Although it’s nice to know that I can count on relatives who wouldn’t let me end up on the streets
I’d rather live on my own because I don’t want to disturb their lives
I’m now dedicating about six hours a day to my search and I’m sending five to six messages a day
I am considering not only Utrecht but surrounding cities such as Zeist
Even though I know I will spend a significant amount of my time travelling
I am in dire need of finding a roof over my head
I just leave the tabs open and refresh the browser every five minutes because being among the first to reply is key
I’m basically replying to any advertisement I see
I consulted TU Delft’s legal assistance team but there is nothing they can do for me because I didn’t have a contract with this person and the conversation happened over the phone
At least I’ve learned my lesson: I am putting every possible detail on the rental contract for my room in Nieuwegein
the landlord there accepted all of my requests

Good news for students who live in Kanaleneiland
they will no longer need to transfer when taking the tram to the Utrecht Science Park
Currently, Jaarbeurs square is still the first and final point of the tram lines to Nieuwegein and Ijsselstein
The tram that goes to the Utrecht Science Park stops at the other side of the station
Passengers looking to transfer from one train line to another must walk approximately 500 metres
This inconvenient situation is due to the large-scale renovations taking place around the central station in recent years
the final stop of the tram to Nieuwegein was moved from a place next to Moreelsepark
at the city-centre side of the station
in order to make way for construction works
which connects the central station to the Utrecht Science Park
it was not possible to connect the two lines
A joint track will be created under the station
which will also be used by busses and taxis
additional safety measures are going to be taken
according to a statement by the province of Utrecht
In the role of national student housing director
Utrecht resident Ardin Mourik has to make sure there are enough places to live for students
he believes it necessary to look beyond Utrecht
Bunnik is just another part of Utrecht."
a former industrial site right behind Vaartsche Rijn station that is now home to several cafés and restaurants
“This used to be a really messy area,” he reminisces
attributing its current set-up to the arrival of student housing
“This is a really interesting product that can inspire other cities looking to develop messy areas.” One of its advantages is that it can accommodate lots of people: students usually don’t have a car
“If you see how many people are living in such a small space and compare it to your regular residential area
Mourik has been in touch with all the parties involved
Mourik studied in Utrecht himself: he followed the Geography teaching programme at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences
The first room he ever occupied was at Smaragdplein
"I think I lived there for three or four years
enough time had passed since I'd first registered at SSH
but I had such a nice house by then that I didn't think it was worth the move
even though I was paying way too much." Mourik ended up challenging his rent and the rent committee ruled in his favour
he was not on good terms with his landlord
"The vulnerable position tenants are in has always stayed with me," he says
But that wasn't the only thing that stayed with him: he also learned the importance a student room could have in someone's life. "I come from a very solid
in which it’s not common to go and live in lodgings
I came out of the closet in three months." He thinks those two things are related
347,000 students were expected not to be living with their parents but this figure jumped to no less than 409,200 in 2022 — an increase of 14 percent in eight years
This has been caused by something that wasn’t foreseen in 2015: a significant increase in the number of international students
“They all need a home since they don't have parents to live with
That creates a huge pressure on the market," he explains
Most international students in the Netherlands come from other countries in the European Union and European Economic Area
which means they cannot be turned down due to European law
One of the solutions proposed is reducing the offer of English-taught courses
"But that would be a very drastic measure," Mourik ponders
But what do international students think of this plan? It’s common knowledge that they have a harder time scoring a room and
Sofie (19) studies Economics and has been living in the city centre since December
she was staying at a hotel because she didn't have a room
“It was extremely hard to find a room.” Edoardo Menoncin (25)
also spent his first twenty days in Utrecht in a hotel and an Airbnb apartment
He managed to find a room on Voorstraat but he is paying a lot for it
He wouldn't mind living outside of Utrecht
“As long as I spend less than an hour on my commute,” adds his friend Nicolas Stavrides (23)
“It’s better than a hotel,” Sofie underscores
He considers an appropriate offer of public transport to be an important prerequisite for student housing in outlying areas
it’s a fact that many provinces are cutting back on public transport,” he laments
That's why he's been in talks with the province of Utrecht
Asked whether he thinks most students would be interested in a room outside Utrecht
he says: ”We know that distance is an issue
it’s either living with your parents or living a bit further away from the university.”
Neil FetherstonhaughSat 3 Jun 2023 at 19:20The Dutch criminal pal of Christy ‘Dapper Don’ Kinahan
has been hit with a gag order that bans him from speaking to the media
The convicted drug trafficker and gun runner
one of the most infamous gangland criminals in Dutch history
is not allowed to speak about the infamous IRT affair for six months
The Amsterdam criminal is currently detained on suspicion of cocaine trafficking in the detention centre in Nieuwegein
he struck up a close working relationship with Christy Kinahan Snr when they were both based in Amsterdam
It is believed the pair worked together to import millions of euro worth of cocaine and ecstasy into Ireland and the UK
The gag order was imposed by prison management after a request for Kok to participate in an Amazon Prime documentary about the IRT affair
known as the Interregional Recherche Team (IRT)
was broken up last year after illegal drugs worth tens of millions of pounds were exported to Britain by a gang they were investigating
including two lorryloads of ecstasy pills and amphetamines
plus bales of high-grade Colombian cannabis
were taken across the Channel on commercial ferries
published by an investigative journalist with the Dutch newspaper Het Parool
The gag order was ordered after contact was made between Mink Kok and the crime journalist Vico Olling who wanted to interview the Amsterdam crime boss for a documentary about the IRT affair
“The IRT affair is a scandal that took place in the 1990s,” crimesite.nl reports
“Police forces argued over the use of a civilian infiltrator who worked with (Kok’s) criminal organisation
Olling spoke about the documentary and its creation in the podcast De Nieuwe Willem
“After a preparatory telephone conversation with Kok and a visit to the penitentiary in Nieuwegein van Olling
Kok had decided to cooperate,” crimesite.nl adds
the Nieuwegein prison had learned of Mink Kok's intention
probably because his conversations were being tapped
"Talks then followed between prison management with Kok and journalist Olling
They were informed that if interviews are done within the prison
this would have to be approved by the management.”
Kok submitted a request to the management suggesting three possible ways in which the interview could take place
The preference was to interview Kok in front of the camera
An audio conversation was proposed as a second option and if that did not work
an exchange of letters could also take place
The management has written a letter to Kok in which is claimed they wrote: “Due to the size of your previous case and your pre-trial detention
inquiries have been made with various sources
in which the management of the PI Nieuwegein unfortunately decided negatively on this request.”
Mink Kok's lawyer has a been quoted as saying they were “surprised by this decision:
“We don't like conspiracy theories and like to stick to the facts
that he is now not allowed to talk about things from 30 years ago
that they forgot to pick him up at his last pre-trial session
that strongly exculpatory documents are withheld from the file
that the start of the investigation is not right and that the court does not want to do anything with all this yet.”
Teurlings says he has not objected to the prison's decision so as not to divert attention from the handling of Kok’s case that will be heard on June 13

Fugitive Ridouan Taghi has been linked to two more murders
three attempted killings and ordering an attack on a spy shop in Nieuwegein
was revealed in a proforma hearing on Tuesday
The criminal group led by Taghi is now suspected of at least nine assassinations and a whole series of attempted murders and never executed murder plans
The murders newly added to the charges against Taghi and his gang are that of spy shop employee Ronald Bakker on 9 September 2015 and crime blogger Martin Kok on 8 December 2016
Taghi is also charged with two attempts to murder Kok
on 2 July 2018 and earlier on the day of his murder
and an attempt to murder Amsterdam criminal Khalid B
The Public Prosecutor also suspects Taghi of ordering an attack on the spy shop in Nieuwegein where Ronald Bakker worked
he ordered that a bazooka be fired at the spy shop
The reason for these plans was that Taghi believed the spy shop provided the police with information and equipment
The new suspicions were discussed behind closed doors on Tuesday. On Friday the court decided that the press and the public would not be allowed to attend the hearing, after the murder of key witness Nabil B.'s lawyer Derk Wiersum. Wiersum was shot dead in front of his home in the Buitenveldert neighborhood of Amsterdam on September 18th
The police are looking for a man who "showed unusual attention to the feet of a 12-year-old girl" on Symphonielaan in Nieuwegein on September 17
The girl was approached by a man she does not know on the street at around 5:00 p.m.
"He asked the girl to show him her bare feet
After the girl had complied with this unusual request
The police would like to identify this man and call on anyone who may recognize him to come forward
Researchers working at an archaeological site in the municipality of Nieuwegein
have made an astonishing Stone Age discovery
They’ve found a 6,000-year-old grave containing a baby in the arm of a young woman
Experts say that this is the oldest infant grave ever discovered in the Netherlands
IB Times reports that the baby’s remains were only discovered after a closer inspection of the woman’s skeleton was conducted by archaeological consultancy RAAP in Leiden
What was unusual about this particular skeleton was the fact that
unlike other skeletons discovered at the site in Nieuwegein
the right arm of this skeleton had been bent at a strange angle
which led to the discovery of the baby’s remains
“The posture of the woman’s body did not conform to what we had found so far
bodies whose limbs are placed parallel to the body
We then made the moving discovery that she was
cradling a little baby,” project leader Helle Molthof told NOS
The bone fragments that were discovered at the site included a tiny jaw with several milk teeth
which helped scientists to conclude that the baby most probably had died when it was several months old
What makes this find even more unique is the fact that an infant’s skeletal bones would normally perish by now
they were preserved due to a layer of clay and peat at the site
Archaeologists believe that the woman holding the infant was between 20 to 30 years old at the time of her death
Although scientists believe that the woman is most likely the infant’s mother
a DNA test will be conducted to reveal the relationship and will also determine the sex of the baby
Several more skeletons and many other archaeological finds were unearthed at the site during the past two years
over 136,000 well-preserved finds have been discovered in the area of Nieuwegein so far
Archaeologists believe that the discovery of the skeletons can provide vital information about the burial practices of the hunter-gatherer people of the Swifterbant culture
a people that lived in the region thousands of years ago
the people of the Swifterbant culture inhabited the territory of modern-day Netherlands
where they built their first primitive dwellings along the rivers of the area
These people allegedly lived in small groups of 40 to 80 individuals and their existence depended greatly on nature’s resources
the Swifterbant people primarily survived by hunting animals
what distinguished the Swifterbant culture from neighboring cultures is the fact that members of this culture were the first to domesticate animals such as dogs
the archaeological site in the municipality of Nieuwegein is rich with artifacts and all of them helped scientists in their research of the hunter-gatherer community that once thrived in this particular region of the Netherlands
Thanks to the discovery of these artifacts
archaeologist now know how the members of the Swifterbant culture lived
what hunting and fishing techniques they used
But the discovery of the skeletons will surely provide more interesting information about their culture
Related story from us: The Sentinelese tribe living on an island in the Indian Ocean have rejected outsider contact for centuries and still greet visitors with arrow attack
scientists were unaware of how the people of the Swifterbant culture buried their dead and what happened to their children
Hopes are that this unique archaeological find will help in the further research of the burial practices and will reveal more details about the lives of these people
