The Obdam family celebrated 40 years in business in Parry Sound on March 26. - Stephannie Johnson/North Star Mary and Peter Obdam in 1965. - Submitted photo PARRY SOUND – Weekly 3 a.m. trips to Toronto picking up fresh flowers are nothing for the Obdam family – they’ve been doing it for the last 40 years. Obdam’s Flowers celebrated the milestone anniversary on March 26, when Peter and Mary Obdam opened Parry Sound’s first flower shop at 33 James Street. Originally from Holland, they each immigrated to Canada in 1958. The couple met here and after a seven-month courtship, was married in 1960. They began their business first with greenhouses that supplied the florist trade for about six years from a location at Goodwood, north of Stouffville. Peter said they bought the greenhouse, home and land (10 acres) for just $13,000. From there, the couple established their first retail store in Scarborough in 1968 and added a location at the Whitby Mall in 1970. In 1976 the Obdams sold their Scarborough business and moved to Parry Sound. The couple retired for a year, before deciding they should open a flower shop in Parry Sound. On their inaugural day, Peter said customers were lined up down the street and they nearly sold out of everything. “The days following the opening have been surprisingly busy and the couple is already beginning to realize that even though they are located in a small town, they will still be subject to the pressures of a busy business pace and will have to take their days off when they can,” said the 1976 article. In 1986, the Obdams purchased the building around the corner, at 31 Seguin Street, and moved their shop, with their daughter Jennifer, who had been involved with the business since she was a child, becoming manager. After Jennifer graduated high school, she was going to take horticultural courses at Humber College, however even before school began, she learned from her professor that she was over-qualified for the course. “She knew already so much,” said Mary proudly. Jennifer shrugged and smiled, “So I just bought a car and started working full time.” In 2012, Jennifer, bought the business, now called J. Obdam’s Flowers, from her parents. “Back then, we introduced to Parry Sound alstroemerias and all different kinds of flowers, because it was basically daisies, carnations and roses and we came here with snapdragons and freesias,” said Jennifer. Peter said he misses Holland this time of year, and running the family business. “I miss it sometimes, because now it is flower time. I can smell it if I think of it – you stand there and you look at that view of colour,” he said. “I miss the hustle and bustle and the work.” Although Mary admits she doesn’t miss the business so much, greenhouses take her back to the beginning of their business. “If I go into somebody’s greenhouse that smell brings everything back to that time, all those memories,” she said.
