known as the “Firebirds,” inactivated at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base marking the end of more than 30 years of operational support at the installation The inactivation comes as part of Davis-Monthan’s transition toward a more rescue-centric mission following the divestment of the A-10 Thunderbolt II and the 2024 inactivation of the 354th Fighter Squadron The 355th OSS primarily provided operational support to the 354th and 357th Fighter Squadrons but has provided support to the installation at large “The 355th OSS has been the airfield support squadron taking care of everything a pilot needs to fly,” said Lt “From intelligence and aircrew flight equipment support to weather briefings and airfield management our Airmen ensured every mission launched safely and effectively.” With the departure of the A-10 from Davis-Monthan the functions of the 355th OSS are being consolidated under the 563rd OSS to better align with the base’s evolving rescue mission its Airmen will continue to execute their roles under the 563rd Rescue Group as new additions to their OSS “The beautiful thing about this inactivation is that the only people really inactivating are my director of operations and me,” said Knight “Everybody else is transferring over to the 563rd OSS ensuring the mission continues uninterrupted under the rescue community.” The 355th OSS has played a vital role in Davis-Monthan’s history providing airfield support since its activation in the early 1990s The squadron’s legacy is intertwined with the A-10 community which has long been a hallmark of the base’s identity “This inactivation is an acknowledgment that there will never be another A-10  deployment from Davis-Monthan,” Knight said “It is another step in the Air Force’s transition toward the future fight ensuring the base is postured to support its evolving rescue and special operations missions.” As the inactivation marks the end of an era former 355th OSS chief of plans and readiness who worked in the squadron for over 20 years shared his thoughts on its influence and the lasting imprint it leaves behind “The Firebirds did all things airfield,” said Bellamy the squadron ensured every operation was set up for success.” the Airmen who made the 355th OSS successful will continue their work under the 563rd OSS maintaining their commitment to enabling operations at DM “The job mostly won’t change for most of the people in the squadron,” Bellamy said “They will still be supporting everything that moves on this base The shift is more about culture — moving from an attack-focused mindset to a rescue-focused one But I have no doubt that our people will continue to excel.” The inactivation of the 355th OSS is a significant milestone in Davis-Monthan’s transition representing the base’s shift away from its historic A-10 mission and toward a future centered on rescue and special operations Though the squadron’s time has come to an end its impact will continue to be felt as its Airmen carry their expertise and dedication into their new roles at the 563rd Rescue Group serves the aerospace and defense industry of Southern California News and ad copy deadline is noon on the Tuesday prior to it also creates a frictionless platform for third-party and ecosystem partners to plug in Whether it’s Internet of Things (IoT) device vendors cloud-native OSS with open APIs allows rapid partner onboarding and co-creation operators can easily expand their portfolio with new revenue streams—bolstering the business to business to everything (B2B2X) model—while still maintaining centralized oversight and robust security at scale.  launching a new offering in telecom could take upward of 50 weeks and deploy new products—like on-demand network slicing or advanced IoT bundles—in days or even hours This speed is a game changer for operators transitioning from ‘telcos’ to ‘tech-cos,’ where continuous experimentation and rapid scaling of successful pilots are essential to staying competitive Coupled with agentic AI that autonomously manages tasks cloud-based OSS and BSS ensures you don’t just move faster—you move smarter Leading telecoms are already laying the groundwork for agentic AI by adopting: and manage their OSS across regions far more easily than traditional on-premises setups iterative releases—critical for accelerating 5G and 6G services leveraged Azure AI and machine learning to achieve significant improvements in network performance and efficiency By incorporating AI and big data technologies Telefónica España is developing more intelligent networks capable of self-optimization and adaptation This intelligence allows for a reduction in time to market for new solutions enabling the company to swiftly implement innovations that enhance network performance and customer satisfaction AI-powered instructions can autonomously fine-tune network configurations and realign resources based on live traffic patterns This orchestration is feasible only when AI has an enterprise-wide view of network Just as critical as data consolidation is ensuring interoperability and flexibility. Many telecoms are turning to TM Forum’s Open APIs and adopting Open Digital Architecture (ODA) principles and allow AI solutions to operate across heterogeneous environments.  For example, TM Forum’s collaboration with Microsoft has accelerated the adoption of carrier-grade By aligning Azure’s robust cloud capabilities with ODA standards operators are now better equipped to innovate rapidly and significantly reduce the operational hurdles associated with legacy systems Microsoft plays a pivotal role in supporting these open standards, providing a cloud-native, modular approach fully aligned with ODA. A practical illustration is Sure Telecom’s adoption of Azure where leveraging Microsoft’s open API framework allowed them to consolidate disparate data sources and achieve enhanced customer insights and operational efficiency Microsoft’s platform delivers out-of-the-box integrations and open APIs that empower operators to harness AI-powered analytics and intelligent automation workflows minimizing friction traditionally encountered during legacy system modernization.  cloud-native foundation is essential for scaling AI across complex telecommunication environments and serverless compute reduce operational overhead allowing teams to focus on innovating rather than managing infrastructure By converging data and AI workloads in the cloud telecoms can more quickly test and deploy innovative services that leverage advanced analytics for both operational efficiency and new revenue streams In addition to the operational and technical upsides running on public cloud offers a more predictable and flexible cost model Instead of large capital expenditures tied to peak capacity This shift in economics not only aligns with sporadic traffic spikes—common in modern usage-based and event-driven architectures—but also frees up budget to invest in strategic AI initiatives telecoms can reinvest in higher-value activities such as AI-powered product innovation and partner ecosystem growth.  Microsoft combines a partner-centric approach with end-to-end technology solutions—bringing actionable capabilities to telecoms that want to realize AI-powered OSS and BSS at scale When OSS and BSS data is unified and AI-powered processes take over routine tasks telecoms can prioritize innovation that directly impacts the bottom line Whether rolling out new network services or offering real-time network slicing for enterprise customers the ability to act on consolidated data in an autonomous fashion sets operators apart in a hyper-competitive market Short-term gains include faster time-to-market for new services self-healing networks that optimize themselves and require minimal manual intervention unlock new revenue streams through AI-powered insights Project Janus is already demonstrating this shift—showcasing how AI-powered network intelligence moves beyond predictive analytics into autonomous self-optimizing operations that reduce operational overhead and ensure peak performance with minimal human intervention Project Janus demonstrates how AI-powered network intelligence can move beyond predictive analytics into autonomous self-optimizing networks—reducing operational overhead and ensuring peak performance with minimal human intervention.  The industry is moving beyond point solutions toward a future where agentic AI and unified data estates power Tel (216) 464-6400Email contact Google has revealed that its AI-powered fuzzing tool has been used to help identify 26 vulnerabilities in various open-source code repositories including a medium-severity flaw in the OpenSSL cryptographic library "These particular vulnerabilities represent a milestone for automated vulnerability finding: each was found with AI, using AI-generated and enhanced fuzz targets," Google's open-source security team said in a blog post shared with The Hacker News The OpenSSL vulnerability in question is CVE-2024-9143 (CVSS score: 4.3), an out-of-bounds memory write bug that can result in an application crash or remote code execution. The issue has been addressed in OpenSSL versions 3.3.3 Google, which added the ability to leverage large language models (LLMs) to improve fuzzing coverage in OSS-Fuzz in August 2023 said the vulnerability has likely been present in the codebase for two decades and that it "wouldn't have been discoverable with existing fuzz targets written by humans." Furthermore, the tech giant noted that the use of AI to generate fuzz targets has improved code coverage across 272 C/C++ projects "One reason that such bugs could remain undiscovered for so long is that line coverage is not a guarantee that a function is free of bugs," Google said "Code coverage as a metric isn't able to measure all possible code paths and states—different flags and configurations may trigger different behaviors These AI-assisted vulnerability discoveries are also made possible by the fact that LLMs are proving to be adept at emulating a developer's fuzzing workflow The development comes as the company revealed earlier this month that its LLM-based framework called Big Sleep facilitated the detection of a zero-day vulnerability in the SQLite open-source database engine In tandem, Google has been working towards transitioning its own codebases to memory-safe languages such as Rust while also retrofitting mechanisms to address spatial memory safety vulnerabilities – which occur when it's possible for a piece of code to access memory that's outside of its intended bounds – within existing C++ projects This includes migrating to Safe Buffers and enabling hardened libc++ the latter of which adds bounds checking to standard C++ data structures in order to eliminate a significant class of spatial safety bugs It further noted that the overhead incurred as a result of incorporating the change is minimal (i.e. "Hardened libc++, recently added by open source contributors, introduces a set of security checks designed to catch vulnerabilities such as out-of-bounds accesses in production," Google said "While C++ will not become fully memory-safe leading to more reliable and secure software." and SOC security to respond quicker and stop a mixed financial picture with some promising revenue trends offset by significant profitability challenges The company achieved 15.1% year-over-year revenue growth to $15.1 million in Q4 with both segments showing double-digit growth this revenue improvement was overshadowed by a substantial deterioration in profitability with Q4 net loss widening to $3.1 million versus $278,000 in the year-ago period The gross margin collapse to 15.7% (from 33.7% last year) is concerning though 8.1% of this decline stems from a $1.2 million one-time contract loss charge OSS recorded $8.3 million in one-time charges significantly impacting the annual loss of $13.6 million management's 2025 projection of $59-61 million in revenue (representing 8-12% growth) and expected EBITDA breakeven suggests the company believes its transformation strategy is gaining traction The anticipated 20%+ growth in the higher-margin OSS segment is particularly significant as it indicates progress in the strategic shift toward defense and AI edge computing markets Cash position remains reasonable at $10 million though the $11.6 million reduction in working capital year-over-year merits close monitoring as the company executes its turnaround strategy OSS's multi-year transformation strategy is showing initial success signals despite the challenging financial results The company is executing a fundamental business model pivot toward higher-margin higher-growth markets in AI/ML edge computing for both defense and commercial applications This strategic redirection appears necessary given the $4.8 million revenue loss from a former media customer The consecutive quarterly revenue improvements throughout 2024 suggest the strategy is gaining momentum particularly in the core OSS segment which achieved 10% growth in Q4 The substantial inventory write-downs ($7.1 million) reflect a prudent though painful realignment of resources toward future growth areas Management's investment in sales capabilities and customer-funded development projects demonstrates a disciplined approach to building sustainable growth The significant contract charges signal execution challenges in the transition but management's statement that no further charges are expected on this contract suggests they've addressed the underlying issues The projected 20%+ growth in the OSS segment for 2025 would validate the company's strategic focus on enterprise-class AI computing at the edge The path to EBITDA breakeven will require maintaining gross margin improvement and careful expense management especially given the current cash burn rate but the company appears positioned for the multi-year transition they've outlined Strength in both segments contributed to consolidated year-over-year revenue growth for Q4 2024 Consolidated revenue increased sequentially every quarter throughout 2024 reflecting the success of the Company’s transformation strategy to higher-growth markets Management expects double-digit consolidated revenue growth in 2025 driven by anticipated OSS segment revenue of over 20% and consolidated EBITDA break even for the year machine learning (ML) autonomy and sensor processing at the pleased to report a return to consolidated year-over-year revenue growth for the fourth quarter as sales from both our OSS and Bressner segments grew at double digit rates Throughout 2024 we executed on our multi-year transformation making significant progress in shifting our business toward higher-margin and deepened collaboration with customers developing high-performance edge computing solutions for both commercial and defense applications," stated OSS President and CEO “As efforts to reposition the Company for revenue growth gained momentum during 2024 and our business model evolved we adjusted our legacy inventory and program costs to better align with our focus on improving efficiencies and increasing profitability We believe the progress we made in 2024 strengthened our business positioning the Company for higher sales and profitability in 2025 and beyond,” concluded Mr compared to $13.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 The 15.1% year-over-year increase was a result of a $1.3 million increase in Bressner segment revenue and a $642,000 year-over-year increase in OSS segment revenue The 10% year-over-year increase in OSS segment revenue was primarily due to higher revenue from defense and commercial customers as well as new customer-funded development orders aligned directly with the Company’s strategic focus and plan The following table sets forth customer-funded development contract Consolidated gross margin percentage was 15.7% compared to 33.7% in the prior year quarter compared to 33.7% in the same period last year The decrease in gross margin was primarily due to product mix the OSS segment had a gross margin of 9.4% compared to 45.9% for the same period a year ago The decrease from the same period last year was primarily driven by product mix The Company’s Bressner segment had a gross margin percentage of 21.2% compared to 22.2% in the same period last year Total operating expenses increased 15.1% to $5.5 million This increase was predominantly attributable to higher general and administrative costs related to planned sales and program management investments made during the quarter The Company reported a net loss of $3.1 million inclusive of $1.2 million in one-time charges compared to adjusted EBITDA of $322,000 in the prior year period the Company reported cash and short-term investments of $10.0 million and total working capital of $24.0 million compared to cash and short-term investments of $11.8 million and total working capital of $35.6 million at December 31 The reduction in cash and short-term investments was primarily driven by the paydown of $1 million of notes payable compared to $60.9 million for the same period last year The 10.2% year-over-year reduction in consolidated revenue was primarily a result of approximately $4.8 million related to a former media customer for whom shipments ceased in the second quarter of 2023 This decrease was partially offset by higher sales to customers in the military and defense end markets Bressner segment revenue declined by $2.0 million on a year-over-year basis associated with slower economic activity in the German economy The following table sets forth net revenue by segment for the twelve months ended December 31 100%; border-collapse:collapse ;"> Twelve Months EndedEntity:December 31 the Company incurred a total of $8.3 million of one-time costs related to this customer-funded development contract or inventory charges Consolidated gross margin percentage was 14.1% the Company’s OSS segment had a gross margin of 2.5% compared to 35.6% for the same period a year ago The Company’s Bressner segment had a gross margin of 23.5% compared to 24.0% in the same period last year Total operating expenses decreased 18.6% to $21.1 million This decrease was predominantly attributable to a charge of $5.6 million for an impairment of goodwill that occurred during the 2023 twelve-month period the elimination of costs associated with organizational restructuring timing of certain new product introduction activities and the deployment of engineering resources onto customer funded development efforts partially offset by increased costs for personnel and for tradeshow participation The Company reported a net loss of $13.6 million Non-GAAP net loss and loss per share was $11.6 million as compared to non-GAAP net loss and loss consolidated revenue of $59 to $61 million for the full year of 2025 This includes expected OSS segment revenue of approximately $30 million representing over 20% year-over-year growth in the OSS segment the Company expects to be EBITDA break-even for the full year of 2025 Management expects revenue and profitability to improve at a higher rate in the second half of 2025 based on current Secure cloud-native applications at every stage of development to protect code, CI/CD systems, and infrastructure. helping the Allies to victory during World War II Rene Veuve was born in Switzerland to a French carpenter father and an Italian housemaid mother in 1920 he joined the Free French Forces and worked with the OSS The OSS assigned him the codename Joyeuse (“Joyful”) after medieval emperor Charlemagne’s legendary sword the moniker would stick with the young OSS recruit forever Ultimately, his resistance network rescued more than 200 Allied aircrew members who were shot down over occupied France – not only helping them to evade capture but also taking extraordinary measures to repatriate them. Joyeuse himself was wounded during a mission and barely escaped capture. As a result of his brave actions, Joyeuse was personally awarded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower the Nation’s second-highest combat award, the Distinguished Service Cross, for extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy. Joyeuse also received the Légion d’Honneur-Chevalier, the highest military award in France. After WWII, Veuve officially adopted Joyeuse as his surname. Joyeuse went on to study medicine at the University of Paris, where he met his future wife, Suzanne Bouffon. Upon earning his doctoral degree in 1955, the couple emigrated to the United States and married. Until his death, Joyeuse was dedicated to the woman and the country that captured his heart. After emigrating to the U.S., Joyeuse continued to study, teach, and practice medicine. He worked as an emergency trauma surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and also significantly contributed to heart valve replacement research at the University of California, Los Angeles. Years later, his beloved wife Suzanne received a heart valve that her husband had worked to develop. Joyeuse’s contribution to the “golden hour” concept of trauma care—providing emergency medical services within 60 minutes—carries through to this day, particularly in military medicine, and has helped save the lives of countless service members. Joyeuse’s abiding wish was a final resting place on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. His wish was nearly not fulfilled as Joyeuse did not technically meet the Cemetery’s eligibility requirement given that he served in the OSS rather than as an active U.S. military servicemember during WWII. However, the CIA justly advocated on Joyeuse’s behalf, and then-U.S. Secretary of the Army John McHugh approved the burial based on Joyeuse’s “extraordinary heroism, lifetime scientific contributions, and civilian support to the U.S. military.” Today, anyone who visits Arlington National Cemetery can honor those who have served the United States and pay their respects to Dr. Rene Joyeuse, a resistance fighter turned spy, turned medical pioneer. They also enforce regulatory standards and in-house security policies to prevent non-compliance fines and ensure operational best practices. Even better? Their contextual insights streamline DevSecOps processes and enhance incident response. Although many OSS CSPM software options offer the benefits listed above (and more), other CSPM solutions are limited in scope. For example, some tools enable automatic remediation of security risks, while some simply detect issues, leaving the rest of the work to your teams. To get the most out of your chosen CSPM tool, be on the lookout for the following capabilities: Comprehensive cloud resource inventorying: Be sure the tool you pick shows in clear terms where compute and storage resources are in your cloud. Accurate risk detection: Verify that the tool you choose can benchmark your cloud, host, and app configurations against industry best practices to detect exploitable misconfigurations/vulnerabilities. Contextual reporting and risk prioritization: Consider the CSPM product’s ability to understand your business contexts and use these insights to prioritize the risks you’re most vulnerable to. Multi-cloud monitoring: Choose a solution that integrates monitoring across various cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and GCP into one unified dashboard for seamless risk traceability. Compliance management and policy enforcement: Consider a tool that can remediate compliance violations on the fly and help you enforce your organization’s policies and standards. For example, select a solution that will alert your teams in real time when new configurations stray from in-house security policies.  Top 9 OSS CSPM toolsBelow are our top 9 OSS CSPM software and their core capabilities: CIS-CAT Lite Cloudsploit Gapps Lynis Magpie OpenSCAP Prowler Scout Suite S3Scanner CIS-CAT Lite is the free version of the Center for Internet Security’s cloud security and compliance assessment tool. critical need for OSS modernization as telecom providers work to replace decades-old systems He discusses how automation is streamlining operations and unlocking new efficiencies emphasizes the growing role of AI in enabling predictive automation and enhancing customer experience The panel explores how service providers can leverage intelligent automation to reduce costs and accelerate digital transformation Watch the full discussion to gain expert insights into the evolving telecom landscape Welcome everyone once again to the Fierce Network TV Studio here in Barcelona covering MWC but there's no tired faces in the studio today because we're talking about network automation If you can tell us a little bit about perhaps definition setting Folks talk about automation and OSS modernization I think from an OSS modernization perspective some of them are faced with some unfortunate challenges of reducing legacy systems that are 20 or 30 years old before they do that and that's something that they've punted on for years if not decades Once they have that modern foundation in place they can then start to automate their IT and network operations provide faster services to customers in a more modern and efficient way I think when it comes to network automation you have to think about automation at all layers We at Reach have been working hard to create an entire Telco-in-a-box automation I think the reason I was late by seven minutes coming to this show because we accepted a challenge to create a completely commercial mobile brand in seven minutes It costs millions of dollars to do something like that So I think automation has to be done at the network layer you have a privileged position as an analyst You get to talk to everyone and hear their stories and gather your insights So there seems to be a change in CSP's organizations with 5G particularly I guess the issue is that there is more complexity why would you want to have anything more complex to use that opportunity to your advantage and not to your disadvantage you need to be able to automate because there are so many things you can change that a human doing it manually just doesn't work So automation becomes a necessity throughout the network If you want to benefit from the technology That's why we need them to help us out because it is not trivial at all why is now the time to think about automation and what are some services that are driving that We're seeing an uptick in the need for converging both wireline Satellite technology has often been just a backup but now it's a bona fide provider with global reach and in high performance And so I think connecting satellite technology to the RAM to the underlying transport is something that we're starting to see really take up in terms of an automated solution do you want to close the panel out with your thoughts here we are at reach in the middle of it because we literally work with a lot of ISPs in the US in creating a converged mobile internet product or mobile fixed wireless product And I think the other aspect of it is also number of devices in everybody's life either devices we physically interact with or devices just are there and giving some information to us the number of device per person that either we physically interact with or are in our lives was at least one-tenth than what we have today both in developed economies and developing economies but what a great opportunity for us to have you here Thank you so much for taking the time out of what I'm sure is a busy week here in Barcelona As open source software (OSS) consumption soars there has been a 156% surge in open source malware More than 704,102 malicious packages have been identified since 2019 and 512,847 of these have been discovered since November 2023 the firm’s 10th Annual State of the Software Supply Chain report found This year has been record-breaking year for open source consumption reaching an estimated 6.6 trillion downloads JavaScript (npm) accounted for a staggering 4.5 trillion requests in 2024 representing 70% year-over-year growth in requests Python (PyPI) is estimated to reach 530 billion package requests by the end of 2024 Npm is a package manager for the JavaScript programming language The company said that organizations continue to struggle with efficient risk mitigation and while Sonatype’s research focus is on the rise of contaminated open source projects the report noted that all open source or commercial software will eventually have bugs that evolve into vulnerabilities Despite more than 99% of packages having updated versions available 80% of application dependencies remain un-upgraded for over a year The risk is persistent and 13% of Log4j downloads remain vulnerable, three years after Log4shell exposure. It was also noted that publishers struggle to keep up with CVE remediation with several vulnerabilities taking over 500 days to fix In the report, Sonatype calls on software manufacturers, consumers, and regulators to adopt robust security practices and said that the balance between innovation and security is more critical than ever we’ve seen software supply chain attacks increase in sophistication and frequency particularly with the rise of open source malware while publishers and consumers have remained relatively stagnant when it comes to security,” said Brian Fox “In order to ensure a vibrant and secure open source ecosystem for the decade ahead we must build a foundation of proactive security with vigilance against open source malware and comprehensive dependency management.” the company noted that regulators are starting to catch up with the issues New policies are emerging, including the EU’s updated Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS2) which will be live on October 17 as well as forthcoming regulations surfacing in India and Australia These policies are encouraging software bill of materials (SBOM) adoption with more than 60,000 SBOMs published in the last year Sonatype’s report was backed by data from over seven million open source projects Above is a replica of the patches that the founder of the Office of Strategic Services, General William J. ACR Poker's Online Super Series (OSS) has officially kicked off with chunks of the $25M series guarantee padding players' bankrolls right this second the first of the two Main Event starting flights gets underway and to give players a leg up on the competition PokerOrg reached out to ACR Pro Jeff Boski to get the inside scoop on how to maximize your OSS experience.  With such a diverse mix of tournaments and buy-ins in the OSS and do you plan your schedule in advance?  Since I am able to multi-table up to 16 MTTs at once I will take shots at $215s if the fields are big I just login and late reg every event and continue registering until the session is winding down How does your strategy/approach change when playing different formats such as turbos and progressive knockouts?  you can't pass on any close spots like you can in a longer structured event you always have to be cognizant of what stacks you cover and their progressive bounty amount and how these factors will affect the ranges What’s one common mistake you or other players make in the series I took an aggressive approach during the re-entry period to maximize my chances of topping the leaderboard I realized it's important to weigh the potential rewards against the risks involved What advice would you give to players for managing a bankroll effectively during a big online poker series like OSS For large-field MTTs like the OSS you need even more average buy-ins than in smaller fields due to the increase in variance you could win 200+ buy-ins in most of the OSS events but you could also go on a 200 buy-in downswing much easier can you share a memorable moment or experience that has influenced how you’re approaching this OSS I overdid it in the past and grinded the leaderboard too hard I sacrificed too much life equity and balance to achieve an unlikely goal Which OSS tournaments are you most excited to play and will you be streaming for fans to follow?  I am excited for the big Day 2s and all the additional events that are added to the already-juicy daily schedule. It will just be bigger prize pools across the board. I will be streaming a lot more on Twitch.  If you had to give one key piece of advice to someone playing the OSS for the first time Use good bankroll management and be in the right mindset before you sit down to play You want to be optimistic AND realistic at the same time You want to care 100% about a given MTT until the moment you inevitably lose then you must forget all about it and move on to the next opportunity This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page The Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) today released a summary report detailing a dozen actions the Federal government is currently taking to advance security in open-source software (OSS) The governmentwide actions to secure OSS support ONCD’s August 2023 OSS security request for information (RFI) that yielded 107 public submissions addressing key areas the Federal government should prioritize to improve the security of the OSS ecosystem ONCD said the submissions advocated for a “considerable number” of Federal actions to secure the OSS ecosystem which resulted in agencies implementing a dozen activities to support the RFI recommendations Recommendations include increasing the adoption of memory-safe programming languages developing new open-source tools and libraries and using AI to enhance secure software development The 20-page report highlights that – in alignment with the President’s agenda as established in the National Cybersecurity Strategy and in support of the recommendations provided through the RFI – members of the Open-Source Software Security Initiative (OS3I) have completed or plan to complete a dozen actions to secure the OSS ecosystem in 2024 and 2025 On the advanced research and development front the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that it is planning to launch an open-source software safety and privacy track for the Pathways to Enable Open-Source Ecosystems (POSE) program “The program’s goal is to transition open-source technologies into open-source ecosystems to further advance technologies and efficiently address national challenges while ensuring security and privacy,” the report says ONCD also highlighted the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) new program that will build automation tools to help developers translate legacy software to achieve verifiably memory-safe Rust code The Cybersecurity and Information Security Agency (CISA) is partnering with open-source communities to help improve the security of the open-source ecosystem operationally and strategically The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) recently established the first Open-Source Program Office at a Federal agency “The function of the OSPO is to establish and maintain guidance and Federal Government’s open-source ecosystem by working and sharing openly,” the report says DARPA launched its Verified Security and Performance Enhancement of Large Legacy Software (V-SPELLS) program which aims to create practical tools to help developers with legacy software modernization V-SPELLS tools will aid developers in replacing hand-written parsing code with machine-generated parsers that are proven to be free of vulnerabilities DARPA’s Compartmentalization and Privilege Management (CPM) program is exploring ways to automatically transform legacy software into small code compartments so that cyberattacks that exploit a vulnerability still can’t compromise their ultimate target “Open-source software is ubiquitous and it underpins much of the hardware and software vital to America’s national security and economic prosperity The Biden-Harris administration recognizes the unique value proposition of open-source software; when it is not secure and resilient and disorder is evident,” ONCD’s report concludes “Preventing and mitigating those risks cannot be accomplished by the Federal government alone; it requires collaboration with the open-source software community.”
