The expected strong gusts of wind were observed in the west and southwest of the Netherlands on Monday afternoon
felling trees and causing problems during the evening rush hour
Trees were ripped from the ground and toppled over in various locations
and problems on the railroad between Gorinchem and Leerdam
The strongest gust was recorded on the Oosterscheldekering at a speed of 102 kilometers per hour
wind gusts of 94 kilometers per hour occurred in Hoek van Holland and Vlissingen
A Code Yellow weather warning was in effect on Monday afternoon in Noord-Holland
at least one metro crashed into a downed tree
a spokeswoman for transport company RET confirmed after reporting by the regional broadcaster
but metro traffic between Rotterdam-Slinge and Rhoon was blocked
no trains were running between the Amsterdam Centraal and Duivendrecht stations
The tree crashed down on the overhead wires
"It is turbulent and we are also noticing that on the tracks."
A train was also stranded due to the fallen tree
ProRail said that an "evacuation plan" was being developed for the passengers stuck on that train
The travel planner from national railway NS showed that the disruption was expected to last until 10:45 p.m
The NS advised people to take the metro between the Amsterdam Centraal
A tree also fell on the overhead wires on the route between Gorinchem and Leerdam
meaning that train traffic was not possible there
the NS stated that fewer Intercity trains were running between the central stations in Utrecht and Eindhoven due to a defective overhead line
That was also expected to last until 10:45 p.m
Reports of damage from fallen trees were still emerging from various places on Monday afternoon
it was not consistent enough over land to be classified as an official storm
This requires an average wind speed of 76 kilometers per hour or more for a duration of one hour at one weather station operated by meteorological service KNMI
it briefly reached wind force 9 at Hoek van Holland
Wind force 9 is equivalent to between 76 and 87 kilometers per hour
an overtaking ban was in force on the Markerwaarddijk stretch of the N307 highway between Lelystad and Enkhuizen at the beginning of the evening
also had to adhere to a maximum speed of 70 kilometers per hour
The measures were withdrawn after about two hours
The wind was expected to further decrease from the southwest on Monday evening
Carisbrooke Shipping has made an order for a Labrax 7,280 dwt diesel-electric multipurpose dry cargo vessel from Thecla Bodewes Shipyards
Thecla Bodewes Shipyards said in a statement that the construction of the dry cargo vessel was a significant investment by Carisbrooke in the renewal of its fleet which will enhance the company’s global shipping operations
The diesel-electric propulsion system on board the Labrax 7,280 dwt vessel
in combination with the advanced power-management system
reduces overall fuel consumption and reduces CO2 emissions
this was proven on the first three newbuild vessels – Vertom Patty (pictured above)
the installed propulsion power on board the Labrax vessels is considerably lower compared to ships of equal cargo capacity and with conventional propulsion
and has a full-box cargo hold of 9,336 cu m
The order of Carisbrooke Shipping brings the Labrax dry cargo series to eleven vessels built by the shipyard
ten of which are built for Vertom Group in Rhoon

Dutch shipping group Vertom and Norway’s Strand Shipping have landed a 15-year charter deal with aquaculture feeds producer Skretting for four diesel-electric newbuilds
The vessels that will be deployed for the import of raw materials have been designed to reduce the environmental footprint of Skretting’s supply chain
The newly designed units feature energy-efficient hulls and multi-fuel propulsion systems expected to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by about 30% compared to conventional vessels
which operates over 100 vessels ranging from 1,500 to 12,000 dwt
will own the newbuilds and oversee their construction
most of which are scheduled for completion in 2026
which will be capable of running on biofuels and fitted with shore-power connections
wind-assisted propulsion will also be integrated in addition to several other decarbonisation measures aimed at enhancing overall environmental performance
Last November, Vertom ordered four geared tweendeckers at Chowgule Shipyards in India for delivery in 2027 and 2028
The MPP newbuilds are set to be deployed on the Europe Caribbean Line (ECL) liner service
which connects Europe with the northern coast of South America and is operated in partnership with compatriot Vertraco Shipping

2020 The statue of Piet Hein in Delfshaven

Photo Hans van Rhoon HHTaking down the statues of controversial people from history
will not solve racism in modern society because ‘history is history’
prime minister Mark Rutte has told reporters
‘Pulling down statues is not the answer,’ Rutte said
‘Our history is one of pluses and minuses
And if there are parts of our history which we are no longer proud of
then we should be able to talk about them… but you cannot make history disappear.’
Instead, the prime minister said, we should explain the pros and cons attached to controversial figures. J P Coen, a seafarer whose statue was daubed with paint on Friday was
but he also led punishment expeditions against on the Banda Islands
placed a board next to it in 2012 outlining what Coen did
but not something that he would make compulsory
Meanwhile the Witte de With arts centre in Rotterdam, which was also attacked with paint on Friday, has said it will now press ahead with choosing a new name, three years after it first mooted the idea
The centre takes its name from a vice-admiral in the Dutch navy who played a pivotal role in several major sea battles
but also laid waste to the city of Jakarta in 1618
The Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, also attacked with paint, said it has no plans to make a formal complaint. ‘We see what is happening in society at large and it would not be appropriate,’ director Stijn Schoonderwoerd told the Parool
Amsterdam city council has also said it will carry out an inventory of statues
buildings and street names with a link the city’s colonial past
with a view to placing explanatory notes next to them
‘It is not up to politicians to say what is controversial
it should be part of a wider discussion in society,’ the council said in a statement
‘But we do not accept vandalism and we will take action against it.’
The paint attacks are the work of an artists collective calling themselves Helden van Nooit (heroes from never)

Marlow Navigation of Cyprus and Dutch-based Clearwater Ship Management have joined forces
intensifying and expanding their cooperation in management services for tanker vessels
Marlow said the new partnership provides each company the ability to leverage additional expertise and resources to provide specialised and fully-fledged solutions
Clearwater has been a specialist in tanker management since 1995
The synergy between the two companies will be further enhanced by Clearwater moving into Marlow’s premises in Rhoon
although it maintains its existing contact details
“We will offer our service and expertise to Marlow and their clients
we will gain access to Marlow’s worldwide network of manning agencies and other service providing entities,” stated general manager
from Rhoon in Zuid Holland was sentenced to over 2 years in prison for 3D printing parts for firearms
During a raid of his home in November 2021
six of which were in the act of printing FGC-9 firearm parts
Officers also found several dozen parts like grips and magazines that had already been printed
said he learned to print the firearm parts on YouTube and Google
He also said that he didn’t assemble the weapons himself
“This criminal case shows how big the problem is
Never before have weapons been 3D-printed on such a large scale,” the OM spokesperson said
you do not have to enter the criminal environment
The threshold for purchasing such a weapon is therefore much lower.”
Weapons expert Jas van Driel understands the OM’s concerns
but he stressed that the Netherlands is being flooded with 3D-printed weapons
“What people often forget is that you can print all kinds of parts
You also have to be able to weld to make the model that this case revolves around
This suspect could not do that,” he told RTL Nieuws
You have to be able to join steel parts together and have skills and welding equipment
Then you still have to put everything together.”

The chefs at Park Rotana showcased their skills in various competitions and won five medals at the Emirates Culinary Guild Salon Culinaire held at the Gulfood exhibition 2017.
Amidst competition from regional chefs, Park Rotana kitchen artist Henry Delara dominated the Vegetable and Ice Carving categories and won the gold medals for both.
Ashraful Alam took the silver medal in the Australian Beef Practical Cookery category whilst Chaminda Bandara received the bronze medal in the same group.
Arlene Catalan impressed the judges in the Sustainable Fish and Seafood Practical Cookery category and went away with a bronze medal.
Commenting on the distinction received by his team, Park Rotana executive chef Thijs Van Rhoon said: “As always, it has been a fantastic experience to be part of the Emirates Culinary Guild Salon Culinaire and have our chefs present their talent in the competition. We are extremely proud of their achievements and we certainly look forward to competing again next year and winning more awards.”
The hotel’s general manager Marc De Beer said: “We exert great efforts in showcasing the best culinary experiences to our guests and having our culinary team win competitions like this manifest the caliber of culinary talent we have in the property.”
2018 Denk MPs Tunahan Kuzu (left) and Selçuk Öztürk in Rotterdam
the party founded by two Dutch Turkish MPs who split from Labour in 2015
has published its list of candidates for Rotterdam city council when local elections are held in March
Party leader Tunahan Kuzu unveiled the top six candidates on the city’s Coolsingel on Sunday
although the 26-year-old who studied sociology at the city’s Erasmus University has worked as a parliamentary researcher for Denk since its foundation
said: ‘I had a choice: did I carry on reading research papers into inequality or go and do something about it?’
an independent councillor who was expelled from Nida
amid accusations that he was a ‘spy in the camp’ for Denk
who occupies the position of ‘lijstduwer’ – a high-profile candidate whose name is put at the bottom of the list to attract more votes for the whole group
Rotterdam is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested municipalities
with several parties chasing the same fraction of the electorate
While Denk are hoping to eclipse the popularity of local party Nisa
the populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam are engaged in a battle for votes with Geert Wilders’s PVV group
which is fielding candidates in the city for the first time
See also: The local elections are looming – and you may well be able to vote
Forum voor Democratie, the fast-growing right-wing party led by Thierry Baudet, is also taking part but has entered an electoral pact with Leefbaar.
Van Baarle said he believed Denk had the potential to become the largest group on the council, partly because of the fragmentation in Rotterdam’s politics. ‘If we win six to 10 seats we can be the biggest group,’ he said. ‘At the 2017 parliamentary elections 25,000 Rotterdammers voted for Denk. That’s equivalent to six seats on the council.’
In the 2014 election Leefbaar Rotterdam was the largest party with 14 of the 45 seats, followed by Labour (PvdA) on eight, D66 on six and the Socialists (SP) with five. The council is run by a coalition of Leefbaar, D66 and the Christian Democrats (CDA).

a four-metre high statue of a black woman dressed in jogging pants and trainers looking out over Rotterdam’s busy Stationsplein

Local Volt councillor Imane Elfilali told the press she felt ‘recognition: this what we look like in Rotterdam
a journalist who was present at the presentation of the statue
said she had felt the pride and relief of black women present “who are often reduced to second-rate citizens by systems and people”
But in a column in the NRC
Rosanna Hertzberger criticised Price’s contention that his statues ‘challenge our ideas about art in public spaces(..)
Hertzberger said the statue represented a tendency to sympathise with marginalised people without expecting them to do anything in return
a dark skin or preferably a combination of all three is enough to be lauded
Hertzberger’s column has drawn plenty of ire
with historian Tineke Bennema pointing out that the same could be said of the Girl with the Pearl Earring and the Potato Eaters “who have not achieved anything” and are not heroes or heroines either
both Rotterdammers and tourists have been posing in the sunshine with the girl
and their reactions have been overwhelmingly positive

Plans for dozens of new homes in Heacham were thrown out yesterday
as councillors and residents slammed the level of proposed development in the area
Supporters of the Cheney Hill application insisted it could accommodate the 69 homes that had already been approved
many of whom were carrying placards to protest against the scheme
applauded as West Norfolk Council’s planning committee voted 10 to four to reject it
One of the main arguments against the scheme was that it would double the amount of housing envisaged for the village under the borough’s current development framework if it was approved
That came from the insertion of the words “at least” into site allocations at the recommendation of the government inspector who examined the document
said that had been necessary because of concerns over whether the borough could sustain an adequate supply of housing land without it
But Heacham parish council chairman Michael Williamson said the plans did not represent the “limited development” envisaged in the development framework
He said: “I urge you to consider the impact on our community and the public mistrust of future site allocations together with its perception of the planning process.”
Committee member Martin Storey also dismissed the reasoning behind that as “nonsense.”
We have got to make our decisions on the truth.”
asking for his vote in favour of the scheme to be recorded
Planning officials had called for the application to be approved
subject to legal agreements being completed by the end of November
speaking on behalf of applicants WH Kerkham (Rhoon) Ltd
insisted the site was “underused” and would address an ongoing need for new homes
He added: “There is major inequality in this country and one of the key drivers is housing
But more than 200 objections were registered by residents
the village’s two ward councillors and local MP Sir Henry Bellingham
One of the main fears was the impact of additional traffic using the roads to avoid increasing congestion on the A149 and increasing dangers for children going to the village’s schools
chairman of the parish council’s lighting and watching committee
also claimed the village was at risk of becoming part of a “greater Hunstanton” if action wasn’t taken to prevent that from happening
But Mr Kirkham dismissed the objections as “drumbeating”
arguing they only accounted for around four per cent of the total population of the village
