the Rotterdam District Court declared Davis Europe bankrupt
CEO Edward Koemans explained that the company had experienced rapid growth prior to the COVID years
we had invested — in anticipation of Brexit — in a logistics company with its own warehouse
it became clear that many of our customers were linked to the hospitality industry
resulting in a drop in sales of 50 per cent or more in some months
but the last quarter was so poor that we drew our conclusions," Edward continues
"Davis Europe's business model turned out to be outdated
and there appeared to be less and less space for it in the market
We had two options: to reorganize once again and split the company into one or two smaller start-ups
or to continue in the industry in a different way
The operations of Davis Europe — including Davis Global and Davis Solutions — have therefore come to an end
will continue to operate fully from the UK

A wildfire that broke out Saturday afternoon in a nature area along the Randweg in Ridderkerk has now been extinguished
which spanned an area of 100 by 100 meters
according to a spokesperson for the Veiligheidsregio (Safety Region)
the area is being further dampened to ensure no hotspots remain
Local authorities suspect the fire may have been deliberately set
and arson is currently being investigated as the cause
Emergency services had initially urged the public to stay clear of the smoke and to give firefighters enough space to operate
This incident is the third major wildfire reported in the Netherlands this week
a large fire scorched approximately 130 hectares of heathland near Ede
Over 330 firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control
Another significant fire occurred on Wednesday near the Artillerie Schiet Kamp at ’t Harde
Both the Ede and ’t Harde fires were reportedly caused by mistakes during military exercises
The recent wildfires come amid a record-dry start to 2025
making natural areas particularly vulnerable to fire

There will be separate closure dates for each direction

Drivers should expect major traffic disruptions and additional travel time during the period of the works
which could amount to more than 60 minutes

A 65-year-old man from Ridderkerk accused of causing a fatal house fire in Vroomshoop will remain in custody, a judge ruled on Tuesday
which resulted in the deaths of two people and three dogs
reportedly stems from an ongoing dispute over a rare Bohemian shepherd dog named Bobby
The suspect allegedly threw a gas cylinder into the house on Meidoornlaan and may have also sprayed gas inside before the fire erupted
The incident took place after the man traveled to Vroomshoop to retrieve Bobby
a 15-month-old dog at the center of the conflict
Investigators suspect the gas cylinders were on the property because the residents used them to heat their home with a gas heater to save on expenses
The conflict reportedly began when the suspect
a breeder and chairman of a club for Bohemian shepherd enthusiasts
learned that the Vroomshoop resident had listed Bobby for sale on Marktplaats
The suspect had previously rehomed the dog under the condition that it not be traded and insisted Bobby be returned after discovering the online listing
When the suspect arrived in Vroomshoop on Friday
this led to the escalation that ultimately caused the fatal fire
The suspect’s pretrial detention has been extended by 14 days
the court will reassess whether his detention should be prolonged further
The destroyed house remains the focus of an ongoing investigation by police and forensic teams
The suspect owned several businesses in Ridderkerk
including a wedding car rental service and an electric taxi dispatch center
He and his wife had recently sold their home and were planning to emigrate to the Czech Republic
the origin country of the Bohemian shepherd breed
the first Spanish greenhouse cherries will arrive at Van Ooijen Citrus in Ridderkerk
they are expected to arrive in twelve crats of 1,5 kilos each
"They are a must-have," says Lucien Ruiter
Although the company name suggests differently
Van Ooijen Citrus has become a true cherry specialist
"Cherries are sparse from week 12 to week 17
during these weeks cherries are not available anywhere in the world
The cherry season in the southern hemisphere ended five weeks ago
The greenhouse cherries from our Spanish supplier fill this gap."
"These cherries are not for everyone though
We sell these cherries on a pre-order basis only
and we tend to sell kilos rather than crates
The price of the cherries is set at 75 euros per kilo (30+)
we're not making a profit because the transport costs amount to 20 euros per kilo
we can serve a few specialists who are eagerly waiting for them," Lucien explains
A large red box contains 6 small boxes of 1.5 kilos each
"Since the greenhouse is situated on higher ground
our grower can effectively control the temperature and consequently he can advance the flowering phase and fruiting
Especially in this period when no cherries are available
he can bring a unique product to the market," Lucien shares
he does not foresee a large expansion of the Spanish greenhouse cherry cultivation
there's not a big market for this product."
it is not yet possible to have a clear image of the further development of the Spanish cherry season
but frost during the flowering season or rain and hail just before harvest can still drastically reduce cherry yields
We experienced this last year when two hailstorms destroyed a large part of the cherry harvest in Extremadura."

The Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (‘FIOD’) said a 73-year-old man and a woman
are ‘directors of two companies and are suspected of purchasing and importing Russian timber in violation of trade restrictions imposed by the sanctions.’
the FIOD said the two ‘are also suspected of circumventing the sanctions law by purchasing Russian wood through Chinese suppliers.’ Their homes and businesses in the town of Ridderkerk have been searched and bank accounts
The EU imposed a ban on Russian timber imports in April 2022
which it began to vigorously enforce in July 2022
tons of Russian timber continue to illegally flow into the European market
the International Consortium of Journalists (‘ICIJ’) said in March
shortly after media reports that at least 261 tonnes of timber were imported into Belgium from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022

SquashSite – all about Squash
Frans Otten 2-1 Van Herk (8-3) | Almere 1-2 ‘Meersquash (4-7)
Utrecht 2-1 Houtrust (7-4) | Drachten 1-2 Apeldorn (5-6)
Round 8 of the Dutch men’s PSL had no real upsets and everything went as predicted
but now the numbers get really interesting
Winning a Group grants access to the playoff semi-final
saving a team from a two legged quarter-final and strengthen the warchest for the semis and the final
Numbers #2 and #3 in the Group will advance to the playoff quarter finals
In Group 1 the situation is very interesting
After their win over Ridderkerk yesterday Frans Otten Stadium is leading the poule with a margin of just 2 points
Frans Otten however has only one match remaining against Squash Almere
Rotterdam need to score 14 points in two matches to win the poule
They are however playing ‘Meersquash and Ridderkerk who are both entangled in a battle for third place
On top of that ‘Meersquash can line up Paul Coll and Nicolas Mueller and Ridderkerk has the ability to bring Mohamed El Shorbagy and Patrick Rooney
The grande finale in this Group is going to very spicey and it is impossible to predict the outcome
In Group 2 Twente has unofficially finished top
since Houtrust seemingly started saving budget for the playoffs
but Utrecht and Apledoorn will definitely fight till the bitter end for the third place
And eventhough Utrecht is behind by 9 points
they threw a very effective first punch yesterday by beating Houtrust
They also know that Apeldoorn is up against Twente in the last match
But best chance for both teams to knock the other out is when they go head to head in round 9
The Dutch PSL setup is really proving itself to be a spectacular system
In Group 1 Victoria Rotterdam has already secured their sport in the playoffs and they are well on their way to win the Group and advance directly to semi-finals
Frans Otten Stadium only needs 4 points to qualify
and they have two matches left to make sure that happens with the last match being against Squash Almere who haven’t been a competitive adversary this year
There is even a small chance they could overtake Victoria for the top spot
though that is considered to be highly unlikely
The big battle for the remaining spot will be between ‘Meersquash and Ridderkerk
with Ridderkerk having played one match less
‘Meersquash will probably have an easy task today against Squash Almere and take the full 12 points
Ridderkerk however faces Frans Otten Stadium
Juan Vargas and Andrew ‘The Wizard’ Widdison
Ridderkerk’s line-up is also not too shabby with Lucas Serme
but will it be enough to stop Frans Otten
In Group 2 Twente and Houtrust have earned their spot in the playoffs and now it’s between Drachten
Apeldoorn and Utrecht to make out who will claim the third place
In this battle Drachten is probably too far behind
but Apeldoorn and Utrecht have very similar remaining schedule including one head to head on 13th of March
so that promises to be a very spectacular ending to the group
the world record for the longest conga line (polonaise)
according to the International World Records Organisation (IWRO) in Geneva
remains with the municipality of Ridderkerk
the organization is pleased: "The sense of togetherness and connection was truly present."
fewer than the 1,218 participants from the municipality of Ridderkerk
The festive mood was high on the TU/e campus on Thursday
Many well-dressed participants gathered around 4:00 PM at the square in front of the main Atlas building
including well-known carnival figures like Prince Frivolicus Mark Welp and Christel de Laat with the gentlemen from Träcksäck
TU/e president Robert-Jan Smits also joined the line
The organizers had hoped to break the record
so we didn’t know how many participants there would be
but the most important thing for us wasn’t the record
What mattered was the atmosphere on campus; there was laughter
and a real sense of togetherness and connection
Even a daycare with kids in push carts joined in," said organizer Esther Lutterman
laughing: "I think we can say that we’ve brought the most diverse and smartest polonaise in the world to life
This celebration of connection certainly leaves us wanting more." Togetherness TU Eindhoven organized the record attempt with the goal of fostering greater unity in the Brainport region
such as measures to limit foreign labor migration and international students
expats and internationals often don’t feel as welcome
The university wanted to show solidarity with Brainport residents from different backgrounds by breaking the world record for the longest polonaise together and introducing newcomers to carnival and Brabant’s hospitality
"A sympathetic initiative," said TU/e president Robert-Jan Smits
We need top international talent in our Brainport region
so it’s essential that foreign knowledge workers feel welcome and at home here
And a Brabant polonaise is the perfect way to do that
Three industrial estates in Ridderkerk and Barendrecht
will be called Dutch Fresh Port from now on
It concerns industrial estates Nieuw Reijerwaard and Verenambacht in Ridderkerk and Bedrijventerrein Oost in Barendrecht
the three industrial estates can better highlight the unique characteristics of the area
chairperson of the GRNR (Gemeenschappelijke Regeling Nieuw Reijerwaard
have given the starting sign for implementing the new mutual brand strategy of the three industrial estates
Van Gelder Groente en Fruit is the first company to be located at the expansion of Dutch Fresh Port (at the Nieuw Reijerwaard site in Ridderkerk)
they unveiled the logo of the new industrial estate
Tanja: “Dutch Fresh Port stems from the enthusiastic entrepreneurship of generations of frontrunners in the agro-fresh-food-logistics
Seventy-one per cent of the top 50 companies in the Netherlands is located in this area
combined they achieve 25 per cent of the turnover in the sector
It offers room to grow to successful entrepreneurs who think innovation
smart cooperations and sustainable entrepreneurship is matter-of-course
and an extensive labour potential ensures an unrivalled business climate.”
Round Three : Houtrust and Victoria make it three wins out of three to go clear at the top of the table …
Spiciest confrontation without a doubt is between ‘Meersquash and Frans Otten Stadium
Both title contenders lost some valuable points in their earlier matches and another loss could have a devestating effect on their race to the playoffs
Victoria Rotterdam and Coulisse Twente are lined up to win
while Houtrust faces a tough battle against Squash Utrecht
Matches will be broadcast live by SquashTV.local on Squash Bond TV
2020 Chilean based Broom Group has acquired the cold-storage and distribution facilities of Saphir
operating independently from it previous owners
In February Broom Group announced the acquisition of the majority of shares in B&L Fruitlogistics BV.
a long-time operator within the fruit logistics
storage and distribution operations in Barendrecht and daily managed by Brian Bakker
also being the company’s minority share-holder
Andres Nunez Sorensen comments that this expansion should be seen as a further extension of our end to end fruit logistics services
encompassing cold-storage and packing facilities in origin countries
distributors and retailers closer to each other
using the complete fruit logistics platform offered by the Group
Seller of the facility is the Jupiter Group
Mark Tweedle comments that he is pleased with the sale and the Broom Group take-over of the operation
which will allow Jupiter to focus on its core business
importer and distributor of fresh produce world-wide
simultaneously maintaining a first-class distribution service operation in the hands of its number one global logistics service provider
Dawie Kok adds that the acquisition of Saphir will enable us as a Group
to further add value to our customers both in origin and in Europe

The electricity grid in Rotterdam and the surrounding area has reached its maximum capacity
Large consumers who apply for a new connection or want to expand their existing one will now end up on a waiting list
The affected area includes a large part of Rotterdam-Zuid
Parts of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpernerwaard are also affected
Stedin is investigating whether it can reward some large consumers for using electricity at non-peak times
Large consumers who would like to participate can register with the grid operator
Stedin also appealed to households and small businesses to avoid peak hours on the electricity grid - between 4:00 p.m
“By using charging stations and heat pumps mainly outside these peak hours
residents and businesses help relieve the electricity grid,” regional director Maarten Bijl said
Stedin is working with TenneT on expanding and strengthening the grid around Rotterdam and expects it to have space again from 2029
The power grid throughout the Netherlands is under pressure
Demand for electricity keeps rising as the country transitions away from natural gas for cooking and heating and fossil fuel vehicles
Zuid-Holland is the only province in the Netherlands that still has some space on the electricity grid
All other provinces are colored red or orange
“Zuid-Holland still has some white spots because heavier grids were installed here due to the many industries,” a spokesperson for Stedin explained to NU.nl
the electricity grid is reaching the limits of its capacity and therefore expansion is necessary
The number of crimes involving firearms in the Netherlands is increasing
the police counted over 7,000 gun-related crimes
such as the illegal possession or trade of weapons
The statistics agency did not provide an explanation for the increase. Earlier, De Telegraaf reported, based on police figures, that underage teenagers have been carrying guns more often in recent years
The number of firearm seizures increased by 40 percent in four years
The total number of registered crimes has been stable for six years
this number decreased significantly every year
The number of crimes with a major impact on victims
also remained virtually the same last year
The most crimes were committed in Amsterdam
The company in Ridderkerk marked its 50th anniversary
the Van Ooijen name has been linked to the fruit trade for much longer
Han van Ooijen began trading fruits and vegetables at the wholesale market on Noordplein in Rotterdam
his son Sjaak van Ooijen took over the business
the wholesale market moved to the Spaanse Polder in Rotterdam
After several relocations within the wholesale market
the business gradually shifted from wholesale to import/export
The opportunity arose to build a new distribution center in Ridderkerk
right at the heart of the fresh produce trade
Hans van Ooijen decided to step back from day-to-day operations
and Tom Leenheer joined Gerry van Ooijen on the Van Ooijen Citrus management team
Van Ooijen Citrus has increasingly shifted its focus towards imports
Our strength lies in our service—anything is possible
we're available 24 hours a day for our customers
This is made easier because everyone lives nearby," says Marcel

along with the 10th anniversary of its own brand
"El Arte de Cítricos is a premium citrus brand
which we pack using products from various suppliers and partners around the world
Only the very best quality is selected for this brand," emphasizes Tom Leenheer
we offer several products and varieties from different origins under this brand
we also pack a wide range of products from Uruguay under the brand during the summer season," the importer explains
"We continuously work on developing our brand
we plan to include Moroccan and South African citrus under El Arte as well."
"The Orri mandarin season will last at least until the end of April
while the Moroccan mandarin season will continue until mid-April
we are now two weeks into the Egyptian Valencia orange season
and we expect to continue at least until the end of May," says Tom
but we see this every year around this time due to holidays and carnival celebrations in Europe
demand for mandarins is picking up significantly
and prices are expected to rise in the coming weeks."

The melon market is currently in a transitional phase
while Morocco and Spain are preparing to start their seasons
Jacob Akatalan of MG Fruit in Ridderkerk takes stock: "The recent sunny weather has often led to strong melon sales
but that only works if the product is available," he says
"We've had a rather difficult overseas season
with many delays and numerous quality issues
Shipments from Costa Rica and Panama mostly arrived in an empty market with high prices
although retail sales remained fairly steady," the importer reflects
"Senegal is currently in the final stretch of the Dumara watermelon season
and Morocco is about to begin its campaign
Spain is also preparing to start up again with all varieties
It remains to be seen how volumes will develop
which is a good sign for quality," Jacob continues
"Selling prices for Dumara melons from Morocco are around €1.80–1.85
The market for Cantaloupe remains very challenging
There's still some supply from overseas and Senegal
Galia and yellow melons are also priced at around €15
and Spanish watermelons are expected to sell for about €1.70–1.80," Jacob said
Jacob notes a growing demand for smaller melons
"The exception is among immigrant customers
who tend to have larger families and still prefer the larger watermelons
seeded melons continue to be appreciated in certain markets
but more and more customers are now specifically requesting seedless varieties."

gained a fruit and vegetable exporting company - Gaast BV
He's been working in the Dutch fruit and vegetable trading sector for 20 years already
he's now focusing on exports to Eastern Europe
"I've worked for Niels Stolk companies since 1999
I've always focused solely on exports to Eastern European countries
I've been doing business with some of them for 20 years
have to be cut from the same cloth - they must do what they promise," says Sergey
Sometimes there are between 80 and 150 different products in one truck
We buy 95% of our goods from Dutch companies." The exporter wants to thank several suppliers
despite him not having credit insurance yet
and FruitMasters supported me wholeheartedly
That's based on our longstanding relationship."
I think business will increase again once it gets a little cooler
That led to a turnover of €400,000 for our first month

watermelon sales are experiencing a good flow
but when the sun starts shining in the Scandinavian countries
sales really take off," says Jacob Aktalan of MG Fruit
we are receiving a fair amount of Dumara watermelons from Morocco
There's a reasonable availability of these
and they are being well received in the market
with a kilo price of 1.10 to 1.15 euros," the importer continues
with selling prices between 1.20-1.25 euros."
We have just started with the melons from Almeria
and then we will switch to Murcia and finally end in La Mancha
"How the quantities will develop is always hard to predict
it was expected that water shortages would reduce the number of melons coming this way
but that turned out to be less severe than anticipated
the success of watermelon sales in Europe depends on the temperature."
we have received a fair amount of watermelons from Senegal
This country is clearly emerging as a melon supplier
Their season fits perfectly between the last melons from Costa Rica and Panama and the Mediterranean countries," the melon importer explains
and yellow melons from Spain is still starting up slowly
we are almost past the disrupted weeks due to holidays
These pose a logistical challenge for transport
you can't easily make up for it with extra sales on Tuesday."

HA-HA, in partnership with BIK Bouw and Wooncompas Housing, will develop four social housing blocks for the community of Ridderkerk, near Rotterdam, Netherlands
The project uses materials from the existing social housing estate
and employs an innovative modular-timber system to create sustainable human-centered housing
The old buildings are planned to be disassembled and their components reused and integrated into the new development
which will increase the number of affordable units by 13%
Courtesy of HA-HAThe design utilizes a prefabricated modular wooden system developed by BIK Bouw. The two different unit types are designed to have a span of 7.8 meters to align with the structural span of the reused basement. The modules will be assembled off-site, including wet walls and plumbing, and then transported to the location. This is an energy-efficient type of construction that contributes to the affordability of the design.
The housing blocks are connected by a network of exterior walkways. The elevated sidewalks create the opportunity for each apartment to have its own terrace space, which aims to increase the opportunities for connections between neighbors. The design also hopes to increase the biodiversity of the area by integrating places for plants and animals and by including green rooftops to be used for water reclamation and energy generation.

Grower Jan de Winter from the Dutch town of Ridderkerk started the cultivation of a patch of lettuce of a new
fusarium resistant variety so he can cultivate throughout the summer without having to steam the soil
the demand was quite high due to the warm weather
so I have high expectations for the summer.”
It is the first year the grower is really able to cultivate on a large scale during the summer without the need to steam since fusarium struck in the Netherlands; before that Jan did not steam
Trials with the new resistant varieties of the Rijk Zwaan breeding company were already conducted last year
Jan knows they have worked hard to get the resistance into the lettuce varieties
last year there were not enough seeds to fill up his entire greenhouse
“I think it’s a great development because if everything goes well
Lettuce continued to go strongJan is also happy with how the business went over the past couple of months
“I have considered growing other varieties of lettuce
business still went well because I supply the Jumbo supermarkets through Van Oers United
The advantage of lettuce is that many consumers know just how to use it in their kitchens.”
Barbecuing He also sees the coming months as being positive for the same reasons
“If the extreme cases stay away and maybe even more people stay at home during the holidays than they normally do
then the sales of lettuce often go well also
it is still not an exact science given that
even though this year the spring season was great

Two highly experienced fruit traders have used their knowledge and contacts in Costa Rica to expand the volume of fresh melons supplied into Europe by United Fruits
Industry veterans Gerbert van Egmond and Frank Levarht worked together at Dutch trader JM Levarht & Zonen for almost two decades before it went into adminstration in early 2022
they set up their own business unit LEFresh and
they have helped United Fruits to add a significant volume of melons to its product portfolio
alongside existing product categories table grapes
With the Costa Rican melon season underway as of late January
the pair will source a range of melons from their company Rica Fruta
It works with growers to supply varieties including Galia
as well as different types of watermelon – all of them Rainforest Alliance certified
Costa Rica is reportedly set to supply fewer yellow melons and more Cantaloupe
“Another trend is the increase of so called mini-watermelons
which are gaining more popularity each year,” says Van Egmond
who points to “a combination of an improvement in varieties
change in consumer behaviour and a lower unit price on the shelves”
the country’s melon production has decreased considerably in recent years
United Fruits expects to offer melons to customers across Europe until week 17/18

integrated into a combined LT and HT heating system
This system does not only warm the greenhouse
It also makes the demo greenhouse and the office space nice and toasty
Jean Pierre Schenkeveld and Arno de Veld of Calor Holland
They took care of supplying and installing the new site's greenhouse heating system
Piet van Vugt began this herb company in the 1990s

(l-r) Hans Oosterman of Saphir with Agrocap CEO Johan in 't Veld
which owns a number of companies in the fresh produce business including Cool Fresh International
has acquired Netherlands-based import-export firm Saphir BV
which Eurofruit understands has been under discussion since last year
has apparently now been fast-tracked and will see Saphir merged in its entirety into the commercial operations of Cool Fresh International
the oldest fresh produce company in the Agrocap group
with Saphir's current owner Hans Oosterman set to remain a 'vital part' of the new company
a number of Agrocap subsidiaries including Cool Fresh International have operated from the same logistics facility as Saphir in Ridderkerk
According to the group's chief executive Johan in 't Veld
assets and skills will help all parties offer 'an appropriate response' to recent changes in the fresh produce industry
he said increasing added value in the supply chain had been key to Agrocap's recent growth and
by incorporating Saphir's portfolio of products and clients into its operations
the organisation would be well placed to expand further its existing commercial activities
'New business models based on a joining of forces
in conjunction with competent professionals
can create breakthroughs for all links in the chain,' he told Eurofruit
'This suits the growth strategy which the AgroCap Group set for itself in 2007
specifically in order to develop better solutions for customers and producers.'
Growth strategyAgrocap’s stated growth strategy over the past few years has focused squarely on fostering organic development at all of its subsidiaries and encouraging them to work together to achieve that aim
It is expected that Saphir's entire management and sales teams will be employed within the enlarged organisation
'Because of the fact that we have been cooperating intensively with Saphir during the past year it is clear to us that this company also places clients and suppliers on centre stage
and this fits in perfectly well with the DNA of Agrocap,' said Vermeulen
'The takeover provides an extra impulse for our innovative marketing solutions
and creates an ideal environment for the personal development of all people who are active in it.'
Oosterman said the takeover provided the best of both worlds in terms of operational strength and commercial expansion
'A robust and intensified market acquisition process from within our modern logistic facility in Ridderkerk
coupled with the further development of tailor made solutions for the global clients of Agrocap will create extensive benefits for clients and producers,' he said
Formed in 2003,Agrocap Investis an international investment company focused on the global fresh produce trade
Saphir was established in Rotterdam in 1979 and is primarily a fresh produce importer
sourcing fruit from countries like Brazil and Argentina and vegetables from Germany and Spain
A long-ongoing international investigation by the Dutch, Colombian, and Spanish police culminated in the police confiscating a large number of firearms in the Netherlands and arresting six suspects on Monday. One of the arrested suspects is a woman known as the “Godmother” of Amsterdam, the police said
The authorities in the three countries launched the investigation based on intercepted messages from the encrypted platform Sky ECC
This led the police to the 47-year-old Dutch-Colombian woman known as the Godmother of Amsterdam - a big player in the cocaine trade
the woman was involved in trafficking narcotics from South America to the Netherlands
The police suspect her of direct involvement in the import of a shipment of 230 kilograms of cocaine
The police arrested five suspects in Amsterdam
They are one woman and four men between the ages of 29 and 62
Police officers also raided 29 buildings in Amsterdam
The police seized 25 firearms from several homes
including an arsenal of automatic firearms and a rocket launcher at a house in Rotterdam
They also confiscated several kilograms of cocaine
