Dutch waste management company AVR has resumed operations at its Rozenburg waste to energy (wte) plant near Rotterdam which had been out of commission since a major fire in September of last year
the company announced that three of the plant's seven waste processing lines had been brought back online on 1 October
The remaining four lines will also return to operation this year
In addition to providing around 1.3 million tonnes per year of residual waste treatment capacity for the Rotterdam region
the Rozenburg plant is also an important source of energy for the local district heating network
AVR set up provisional heating boilers to ensure adequate district heating supply amid the prolonged plant closure
AVR thanked the public and private entities which had provided support during the past year
"That we are able to process the residual waste after only one year would not have been possible without the help of many agencies and companies," said AVR

Amsterdam, July 14, 2021. Amazon announced the launch of its first delivery station in the Netherlands, in Rozenburg. The site will add more speed and flexibility to Amazon’s delivery network and ultimately be closer to customers to reduce the time and distance required to serve them with the products they need, where they need it.
“We are excited to launch our first delivery station in the Netherlands,” said Roeland Donker, Country Manager, Amazon Netherlands. “Since launching Amazon.nl in 2020, we have been encouraged by the positive response from our Dutch customers. As our business grows, we must continue to invest in our business, especially in our logistics network here in the Netherlands. With the introduction of this new delivery station, we will provide a more efficient delivery experience for customers.”
The 8,500 square meter building launched on July 14, 2021, serves customers based in the Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Haarlem area. Delivery stations power the last mile of Amazon’s order process and help speed up deliveries for customers. Parcels are shipped to a delivery station from existing European Amazon fulfillment and sortation centers, are loaded into delivery vehicles and delivered to customers.
Amazon is also offering entrepreneurs the opportunity to build their own businesses delivering Amazon parcels to customers. Amazon will take a hands-on approach to help them launch their delivery businesses, including providing access to sophisticated delivery technology; discounts on a suite of assets and services; training on tools, processes, and driver performance; and delivery volume direct from Amazon.
Amazon is a great place to work, with competitive pay, benefits from day one, and training programs for in-demand jobs. Amazon prioritizes the safety and health of employees above all else, and has invested more than $10 billion to help keep employees safe and deliver products to customers throughout 2020.

GUEST: My mother and I were visiting in England
A friend of mine invited us to his mother's home for tea
So she had it in her home until maybe seven or eight years ago
And I basically just put it back in the box
made by one of the world's greatest porcelain companies
The Netherlands have a very long and rich history in making ceramics
APPRAISER: ...which was ping-ponging back and forth between looking at Asia
and moving the ceramics back and forth throughout the world in this rich blue and white texture
They moved away from that with Art Nouveau
but this particular line is done in eggshell porcelain
one with this gorgeous bird-- this is very difficult to make-- and this one with this chrysanthemum
They were doing other lines at the same time
but this is what they became best known and best remembered for
APPRAISER: I will show you how it's marked here
which has become known since for the International Court of Justice
And the gentleman who was in charge of this line was Samuel Schellink
APPRAISER: Obviously a very talented fellow
I haven't really given it much thought at all
(laughs) APPRAISER: If you wished to insure it
I would probably do this at about $4,000 or $5,000

Steve Rozenburg: Our daughter Shannon is presently in a rehab facility
Shannon has had a real run with substance abuse. She has been through 8 rehabs
We have expended the vast majority of our savings for retirement along the way to try to salvage what we thought we could for her
When we knew that we couldn’t control anything about anything in our lives or hers
that’s when we pretty much just had to seek help from someone
Narrator: Steve Rozenburg is a member of Grapevine First United Methodist Church in Texas
along with his wife Donna. All three of their children have struggled with substance abuse. Cindy Ryan
“We need to talk to you.” I didn’t know them or their story and when they came to me and told me their story about their three kids who all had difficult problems and then the daughter
“We know we’re not going to find her anytime soon and we know she’s got big problems but what do we do
Narrator: In today’s Experience Jesus Calling podcast
we continue with stories from individual members of First United Methodist Church in Grapevine
who each share their personal experiences about the impact Jesus Calling on their lives
Donna and Steve Rozenburg married in 1988 and started attending Grapevine UMC with their blended family. They recount their journey through the addictions of each of their children and the brokenness that led them to finally reach out for help
Donna Rozenburg: My name is Donna Rozenburg
We didn’t really get too much involved as much as I would have liked
When we came to church community on Sunday before
let’s get out before somebody asks us how we’re doing
My oldest son Brandon started struggling after his girlfriend died and became heavily addicted to drugs
that was pretty much all it took for Brandon to go off the deep end
It was very painful to watch and it was very hard for us to understand not having had that type of a background and not knowing really how to deal with that
Just seeing him disintegrate right before our eyes
He wanted to be on any sports team in school
He was very involved in anything that had to do with sports
Sean is the middle child. He was the clown of the family
I thought that what he would end up doing. He had a way with words
We started struggling with him when he was 16
basically skipping school and hanging out with the wrong crowd
Steve: Peer pressure really came to bear for Sean
then that led all the way up through full substance abuse issues that were uncontrollable for him as well
She’s a very compassionate person. She would be the one
[who] would see somebody at the lunch table in middle school that nobody would sit by and she would go over there because she didn’t want them to be alone
That was the furthest thing from my mind that she would go down that road
So [the] first time we started seeing the big struggle was when she started high school. Then you start getting in your cliques
and that’s when we started to see the little clues of smoking and drinking and drugs
Steve: It basically culminated with the use of heroin at the behest of one of her so-called friends. That’s when we finally discovered it
That’s what led to her first trip to rehab
Donna: We had gone to Colorado to see Brandon for his treatment for MS
she had gone off to do an errand and I had found in her purse that she had syringes in her purse… stunned
“We’re going to have to send her to rehab.” And she talked us out of that and said of course excuses
and just continued on. Then her boyfriend had called me about a week later and said ‘Shannon was trying to get into his apartment and I just want to break up with her
She’s threatening to kill herself.’
we found out that she endured not only physical but emotional trauma and had become addicted to heroin for a period of about 8 months
we had to gather her up as she left one of them against medical advice
She traveled across several states with 2 young men
maybe every few days and make up a story and tell us this or that and she was fine and she was actually actively using at that time
That’s when things really came to a head for us
Narrator: The Rozenburgs were at the end of their rope. Shannon had been through 8 rehabs
and each time would return to her drug problem
Not knowing their daughter’s location to be able to help her brought Donna and Steve to an even lower place
the Rozenburgs decided to they couldn’t handle this alone and reached out to Cindy Ryan at the church for guidance
“We need to talk to you.” So I didn’t know them or their story and when they came to me and told me their story about their three kids who all had difficult problems and then the daughter
We talked about how little we can control and then I just I recommended to them what had helped me
It will calm you down it will remind you to stay on the present day
It will help give you scriptures that you can pull on
It’s a resource that I think will really help
Steve: She talked to us at length and we came up with a plan that we had done everything basically we could
and that was a recommendation for a small book that she referenced called Jesus Calling
And that’s where our story starts with Jesus Calling
Donna: It was late that night and we got in the car
“Do you want to go get the book?” and he said
it’s kinda late.” The next day kinda went by went by and the next day
All of a sudden we just happened to be somewhere to where I looked up and there is a Barnes & Noble
“Let’s get the book.” Steve’s in the car and I go running in
I came home and it’s changed our lives
Steve: It was concise and it just gave a great punch of a message in a short amount of time
It was something that was easy to digest and it wasn’t too much to try to digest
It was something that we felt like we could deal with in a daily span
For whatever situation I was going through
it would make me go to my Bible and I would read it
and then I would start reading a little after and a little before it
Steve: Jesus Calling made it possible for me to really relate to people on a different level
I feel like that I had been swallowing a lot of things for a lot of years
When people would really ask how are you doing
it was always a pat answer of ‘fine’
And really I found it much easier to tell people
That just led to more conversations that we found things in common that we didn’t know we shared
I would say it felt like a tire that you just let all the air out of
It just was such a relief to finally have it all out there for someone else to hear at least the situation that we were in
As we came to know through Cindy and others
we weren’t the only ones that were facing issues
We felt much more relieved and much more in tune with what we needed to do and how we could deal with our own lives
Donna: As we were reading Jesus Calling every day
And then I realized our story wasn’t much different from a lot of people
just opening up to Cindy was able to just start the process
just think if Cindy could have a basket full of books. So when people come in that don’t have money or don’t have the time
But the actual fact of just having the book right there and just hand it to you. And I thought
I’m just going to get a whole bunch of books and take it to her and hopefully she can pass these out and maybe we’re not the only people with problems
Narrator: Donna and Steve’s journey through their children’s addiction was far from over. But through their pain
they were able to reach out and reconnect with their church family and find hope for the future
Cindy: I think it was weeks or months later that they came back and said
‘We still haven’t found our daughter but thank you so much for recommending Jesus Calling because it made all the difference’
maybe even months more that they called and said ‘We found her
She’s really addicted but we’re going to go get her and take her to rehab.’
Shannon saw Jesus Calling in the floorboard of the car
“What is that book.” I said
“It’s Jesus Calling.” She said
I have heard of that book “How did you hear of that book?” She said
“A lot of people had that book in rehab.” And I said
Cindy Ryan had told us about it and we got it
He just looked at me and I handed it to her and I said
[through] many ups and downs and where she’s been
The resources that we have found through Jesus Calling
through prayer that we have expanded in our minds and our hearts just a great depth to our lives that we previously hadn’t experienced
Something we never anticipated led to many many good things and hopefully will lead to more
because when all of these kids go through rehab
a lot of them have just been successful
When you’ve gone through so much and you have so much to share with somebody else
if I can give anybody any glimpse of hope that there is life at the end of the tunnel
then it just made me… it’s changed my whole perspective on I never thought years to come that I would ever want to be just thinking of things other than retirement or whatever people normally do — go to some city in Florida and sit on a beach and retire. All I can think about is wanting to help people and give back to people and share what I have gone through to help someone else
Steve: I feel like there has been many opportunities for me to do things for others that normally I wouldn’t have been able to do through the grace of God
I had experienced a very bad car wreck and probably shouldn’t be here more than once
I feel like that I’m here to support Donna
help bring my children back into the fold as much as God will allow and God is willing and to provide whatever I can for other people in terms of helping them find their way or comforting them along the way
Donna: Shannon was struggling and had called us about
she didn’t know what she was going to do about moving
“I wonder if she’s read Jesus Calling today.” And so I pulled it out and screenshot a picture of it and sent it to her
“That’s exactly what I needed to hear.” A portion of it was
Thankfulness opens your heart to My presence and your mind to My thoughts
You may be still in the same place with the same set of circumstances that it is if a light has been switched on
It is the light of my presence that removes the sting from adversity
That just sums up what she was going through that day
Steve: Shannon is doing well for the most part
We are 6 months out now as of a few days ago
She is not totally self-sufficient but she has taken giant strides. But we know with the help of Jesus Calling and our church family and God
that we will be able to make it on our own
We feel that we’re all moving in a positive direction
Donna: Jesus Calling has given me hope that I never had before
It’s taught me trust and I can’t do it all myself
I’ve always been the fixer person to try to fix everybody’s situation
Narrator: The Rozenburgs put their faith in God and found peace
even in the most dire of circumstances
Their desire is that others find the same peace they’ve found and through their faithfulness
have provided Jesus Calling books through the church for those who are looking for hope in their own circumstances
It’s been years long in the struggle but they really began by giving the book to me and giving it to other people
sort of that same kind of step of faith that just has caused ripples that we’re just now seeing the results of
Narrator: It is those ripples that swept through this congregation and touched numerous lives
In the coming weeks we’ll hear about the impact that Steve and Donna’s faithfulness to share their Jesus Calling experience has had on so many
and how they also found hope and peace in its pages
Next time on the Experiencing Jesus Calling Podcast…we hear from another family at Grapevine United Methodist with their touching story of the legacy of a mother’s love
I have been attending First United Methodist Church of Grapevine my whole life
Brent: My name is Brent Wicke and my mom was my best friend as well
I was four years old when my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer
I didn’t know how severe it was
Monica: She told me that she wasn’t afraid to die
and that’s a very scary thing to hear as a child from your mom
but it’s so beautiful because she was so at peace with everything
and that’s the legacy she wanted to leave
and that’s the impact she leaves on me
To just know that even if things aren’t going the way you want them to
Narrator: The story of one woman’s exceptional life
and the tangible gift her children are giving today
because of the peace she found in the pages of Jesus Calling…next time on the Experience Jesus Calling Podcast
Our excerpt from Jesus Calling for this show comes from the November 24th entry:

The Wind Wall of Rozenburg is a unique installation designed to block strong winds from hitting the large ships passing through a narrow canal on their way to the port
the Dutch port city of Rozenburg grew both in size and prosperity
and in order to cope with the ever-growing maritime traffic a new canal parallel to the already existing Nieuwe Vaterveg canal was built in the 1960s
named after the civil engineer who built Nieuwe Vaterveg was a massive success
but it wasn’t long before it too became overwhelmed by the ships using it
These giant cargo ships were so big that the strong wind blowing from the sea threatened to alter their course as they passed through the narrow canal and leave them stuck
So local authorities started looking for solutions
Photo: Quisnix/Wikimedia Commons
In the mid-1980s, architect Martin Struyis and artist Frans de Wit were commissioned to come up with a wind barrier that was both efficient and easy on the eye. Their design featured over 100 concrete slabs some of which had a concave shape, lined up over a distance of 1.75 kilometers. Their creation became known as the Wind Wall of Rozenburg.
In the southern part of the Qalandia Canal, the wind wall is made up of 18-meter-wide and 25-meter-long concrete structures, while near the bridge, the pattern of the wall changes. The concrete slabs are only 4-meters-wide but they are closer together.
Although the Wind Wall of Rozenburg looks more like an art installation, it reduces the power of the wind hitting the canal by up to 75 percent, thus allowing even the largest cargo ship to traverse it without issues.
Around 20,000 ships go through the Rozenburg Lock each year. The lock provides easy access to and from the western port area. Since several parts of the lock are in need of replacement, the lock will be renovated. We will convert the lock into a remote-operated lock, including with the use of cameras. After the renovation, the lock will be prepared for the future.
We will renew and reinforce the fender piles on the north side of the lock (in the Brittanniëhaven) and extend them further. The reason therefore is to provide additional protection for the pillars of the Theemsweg railway line against possible collisions by ships. We are also creating a new berth for ships.
The work for the first renovation phase, the north fender piles, is expected to start in August 2023. The targeted completion of the first renovation phase is scheduled for February 2024. The preparation of a Design and Construct contract for rest of the renovation work has been started in cooperation with the engineering firm. We expect to tender the remaining renovation work in the first quarter of 2024.
We will perform the work on the north fender piles with minimum inconvenience for the local residents. Very limited disruption is expected for road traffic. Temporary closures will apply to shipping traffic during the renovation work. These are expected to take place the second part of 2023 and we will communicate via Shipping Announcements (BAS).

To meet the increasing customer demand and add capacity and flexibility to its delivery network, Amazon will open its own delivery station and will start working with small and medium-sized independent local delivery companies in the Netherlands in addition to its existing carrier partners.
Packages will be shipped to the delivery station from the existing European, for example, German or French fulfillment and sortation centers and loaded onto vehicles to get delivered to customers in the greater Amsterdam area.
“Since Amazon started serving customers in the Netherlands, it has established trustful relationships with carriers operating in the country and will continue working closely with them in the future. To meet the increasing customer demand and add capacity and flexibility to its delivery network, Amazon will set up its own delivery station in Rozenburg-Schiphol,” comments Robert Viegers, Vice-president Amazon Logistics Germany, Austria and the Netherlands.
Amazon continues to invest in its transportation infrastructure and other innovative ways to expand its supply chain capacity and speed up deliveries for customers. The company is also innovating in last mile delivery solutions to enhance the customer and employee experience.
Customers benefit from delivery to a safe place, Map Tracking so that they can see how many stops the driver has before their delivery is due, and Photo on Delivery that shows them that their package was safely delivered and where. These services would automatically become available for packages delivered through the Amazon delivery station.
Technological advancements, like intelligent route planning, also support the drivers who deliver packages to customers and associates working in the delivery station.

Arcadis has been commissioned by the Port of Rotterdam to prepare for the renovation of the Rozenburg lock complex near Rotterdam
The complex consists of a double-ended lock with two bridges that has connected the Caland Canal to the Hartel Canal since 1971
The tender expressly included a vision for how scope
workability and feasibility would be integrated
The lock was built by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and is 1,000 feet long
79 feet wide and suitable for ships up to and including the CEMT-VIc waterway class (i.e
the second largest vessel designation for inland waterways of international importance)
The Rozenburg lock is part of a shipping route that is essential for accessibility to and from the western port area with twenty thousand ships passing through it each year
Arcadis is drawing up the design and construction contract for the work
determining the scope for the renovation and calculating the expected investments needed to restore the various lock components
Arcadis is also looking at how to organize 'remote operation' in a way that will ensure the complex aligns with laws and regulations (health and safety
building code) and guarantee its service life over the next 50 years
'We are proud of this renovation and replacement assignment,' says project director Wolter Seinen
'This waterway is where the various parts of our company flow together
our designs and recommendations will be the basis on which the contractor selected by the Port will tackle the work.'

A fire broke out on the premises of the Dutch waste management company AVR in Rozenburg near Rotterdam on Thursday morning
After it appeared to have been brought under control in the afternoon of the day
it flared up again last night and developed into a major fire with heavy smoke
the fire broke out in the central turbine hall of the waste to energy plant
leaving large parts of the site without electricity
with firefighters struggling to reach the blaze in the large hall
"Firefighters are hoping that the fire will burn through the roof of the building so that firefighting operations can be carried out from above through the opening that has been created," AVR said
The efforts are supported by fireboats in the harbour basin
A crane has been called to create an opening in the building's side wall
AVR is a leading processor of household waste in the Netherlands
operating two waste incineration facilities in Rozenburg and Duiven
The energy from waste plant in Rozenburg has an authorised treatment capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per year
a modernisation programme was launched for the plant
AVR has been owned by a holding company of Hong Kong industrialist Li Ka-shing since 2013

Waste management company AVR continues to grapple with the aftermath of a major fire that swept through its waste-to-energy (wte) plant in Rozenburg near Rotterdam in late September
The Dutch company is still working with claims experts to assess the damage from the fire
it had become clear that it would be months before the plant could be brought back into operation
The company said it now expected to be able to restart the wte plant in October 2024

An installation has been constructed on the Rozenburg Peninsula in Rotterdam so that Heerema’s large vessels can shut down their diesel generators and switch to power from the wind turbines on the peninsula
This shore-based power installation will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2021
have now made arrangements with Vopak Europoort to conduct a feasibility study for the use of shore-based power at this terminal
Vopak Europoort is located on the opposite side of the Calandkanaal of Heerema’s berth
A study is therefore being conducted to establish whether and how the installation that now stands on the peninsula can also be deployed for Vopak Europort terminal where large tankers berth
Connecting vessels of this kind to shore-based power poses several significant technical challenges and is therefore hardly done anywhere else in the world
It is hoped that the feasibility study that Vopak and Rotterdam Shore Power are currently conducting will find effective technical and commercial solutions to these challenges and that they may set an international standard
Vopak and Rotterdam Shore Power’s study focuses on safety as well as the project’s technical and economic feasibility: what is needed to realize it
how much will it cost and how much will it yield
The study will be completed in the summer of 2021
Managing Director of Vopak Europoort: 'We are very excited about working with our partners on developing the concept
This could result in significant reductions in emissions at ports.'
A key benefit of shore-based power is that less nitrogen dioxide
particulate matter and CO2 are released into the atmosphere
This reduces air pollution and combats climate change
Shore-based power also has the potential to reduce the noise of ships’ engines
the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the City of Rotterdam put forward a joint shore-based power strategy
Its objective is for eight to ten shore-based power projects to be completed before 2025
to learn from them and then to roll-out shore-based power on a large scale in the port of Rotterdam after 2025
has the capacity to process around 1.3 million tonnes of waste a year
The plant has been offline since the fire...

A fire in a warehouse in Rozenburg near Schiphol forced incoming flights to divert to a different runway on Saturday night to avoid thick smoke, De Telegraaf reported. The fire was extinguished later that evening
The fire broke out in a warehouse on Aalsmeerderweg
the decision was made to divert flights from the Kaagbaan to the Aalsmeerbaan to prevent planes from flying through the smoke
according to the Veiligheidsregio Kennemerland
and firefighters remained on-site to conduct damping-down operations
A spokesperson for Schiphol confirmed that air traffic could return to planned routes shortly afterward
The incident and the temporary runway change had no impact on the airport’s capacity
and flight schedules remained unchanged throughout the evening
Emergency responders checked one person who had inhaled a significant amount of smoke
The fire department advised local residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is going to place a new set of piles and extend two existing sets of piles along Landtong Rozenburg in the Calandkanaal
Expansion is therefore necessary to attract new cargo flows
transhipment on piles and buoys in the Port of Rotterdam has increased from 16 million to 20 million tonnes in 2019
The installation is in line with the policy of the Port of Rotterdam Authority to modernise the port area and use it more efficiently
the Port Authority wants to retain its leading position in the crude oil
oil products and LNG segment and strengthen it further
the buoys in the Calandkanaal were replaced by dolphin configurations
extra dolphin configurations (Dolphins 81) to be added had been taken into account at the time
some dolphins will be added to Dolphins 82 and 84
The dolphin configurations in the Calandkanaal are part of a total of 29 berths at buoys and dolphins in the port of Rotterdam
The berths are an attractive addition to the transhipment options near the terminals and offer a safe alternative to STS on the open sea
Nowhere in Northwest Europe are there as many STS possibilities as in Rotterdam
Vessels of all sizes can moor at the buoys and dolphins 24/7
The berths are not only used for ship-to-ship transfer but also for bunkering and for repair and maintenance activities (in the hold or hull
It is expected that De Klerk BV in Werkendam will install the new dolphins in the Calandkanaal this year
Following last week's major fire at its Rozenburg waste-to-energy (wte) plant
Dutch company AVR presented a plan for dealing with some of its incoming waste shipments
the municipal waste that would otherwise have been treated at Rozenburg will instead be delivered to the "De Spinder" landfill in Tilburg
the streets will remain clean," AVR said in a statement issued Wednesday
Attero clarified in response to EUWID that AVR waste being brought to the Tilburg landfill in the coming weeks would only be stored there temporarily
and that it would later undergo energy recovery...
There were multiple violent incidents in the Netherlands overnight
and two got hurt in separate stabbings in Etten-Leur and Rozenburg

Judge Peter Murphy delivered a judgment on Monday that is learned
Murphy is no ordinary circuit judge. Before joining the bench in 2007 he practised and taught law in both London and the US. The author of a standard textbook on evidence, he was the founding editor of Blackstone's Criminal Practice
a comprehensive handbook now in its 23rd edition
Although the judge heard oral argument at Blackfriars crown court in London last Thursday
his written ruling was not something he had knocked up over the weekend
Murphy made it clear that he was dealing with all face-coverings
and that his ruling should apply both to male or female defendants of any or no religious faith
It follows that he would not allow a biker to give evidence while wearing a crash helmet with the visor down
He was also careful not to get distracted by the question of whether an individual Muslim sincerely believed that she should keep her face covered in the presence of men who were not close members of her family
It would be unseemly and ultimately impossible to decide the degree of sincerity in individual cases
A court should assume sincerity unless there was evidence that a face-covering was being worn as some sort of disguise
Murphy also stressed that he was dealing only with the case of a defendant facing trial in the crown court
His ruling did not apply to witnesses or jurors
Nor did it apply to parties in civil or family cases
does it apply to students at colleges or people walking down the street
It's qualified in the sense that it is subject to such restrictions as are necessary to protect the rights and freedoms of others
include people who come before the courts as claimants
witnesses and jurors – as well as the public at large
The defendant in this case is charged with witness intimidation
She is alleged to have committed the offence while wearing the niqab
a dark veil that covers the entire face except for the eyes
No issue of visual identification will arise at the trial
But we may assume that the complainant – the man she is said to have intimidated – will give oral evidence
It is unfair to ask a witness to give evidence against a defendant whom he cannot see
It is unfair to ask a juror to pass judgment on a person whom she cannot see
It is unfair to expect that juror to try to evaluate the evidence given by a person whom she cannot see
deprived of an essential tool for doing so: namely
being able to observe the demeanour of the witness; her reaction to being questioned; her reaction to other evidence as it is given
These are not trivial or superficial invasions of the procedure of the adversarial trial
they require a compromise of the quality of criminal justice delivered by the trial process
and they may render it altogether impotent to deliver a fair and just outcome
Murphy correctly identified the balance that he had to strike
He rightly said that the jury must be able to see the defendant if she gives evidence
But he did not think she should have to remove her veil at other times
"While it remains true that juries scrutinise defendants throughout the proceedings and take note of a defendant's reaction to the evidence as it is given throughout the trial," the judge said
"I am not persuaded that this is of sufficient importance to require a restriction on the defendant's right to wear the niqab."
is that the defendant is under no obligation to give evidence
Murphy would not allow her to do so if she refused to remove her niqab
the jurors would not be able to assess her demeanour while her alleged victim gave evidence
in a case of alleged intimidation the complainant might not wish to look at the defendant's face while in the witness box
Whether a witness should be able to see the defendant while giving evidence should be a matter for the witness and ultimately the judge to decide
a defendant should be required to show her face throughout her trial
Failure to remove a veil when ordered to do so should be treated as contempt of court
But I don't wish to be too hard on the judge for not taking that view
His ruling is not binding on any other judge and he clearly hopes it will come before a higher court in order to set a precedent
His compromise ruling gives both sides a basis on which they might appeal
There is one further aspect of the ruling that causes concern
The judge ruled that no drawing or sketch of the defendant while her face is uncovered must be "published outside court"
court artists are allowed to publish drawings made from memory
Murphy gives no indication that he heard legal argument from media representatives before restricting their right to freedom of expression under article 10 of the convention
be allowed to prevent an image of herself being published

The Suricates project (Sediment Use as Resource in Circular And Territorial EconomieS) implements new large scale solutions for re-using sediments in ports
erosion and the increased risk of flooding
attenuation measures need to be ramped up continuously
and this involves large quantities of natural sources
EU ports and waterways providing access for shipping are faced with the problem of managing dredged sediments
totalling 200 million m3 / year (80 million tonnes)
just 1% dredged marine sediments ( 800.000tonnes / year) are re use
The aim of the European project Suricates is to increase the re use of these sediments to combat the risks of flooding and erosion
In order to improve regional resilience to climate change
plans have been made to re uses sediments at three Suricates pilot sites
Overall 220.000 tonnes of sediments will be use as raw material in for innovative projects
for the building of resilient protection systems
The large-scale (200.000 tonnes / 500,000 m3) reallocation of sediment in the port will restore a more natural sediment balance in the port and contribute to erosion and flood protection of the shore
The project is carried out with Port of Rotterdam and supported by RWS and Deltares
The aim and reason is to determine the sediment balance before during and after reallocation
Living lab projects based on Building with Nature often struggle to determine the exact impact of the intervention
in this case the impact on the sediment balance around the Maesland barrier (Nieuwe Waterweg)
The combination of intensive surveys and new measurement techniques accurately determines this sediment balance
and thus the effectiveness of the reallocation
the foreshore development of the building with nature project "Groene Poort" will be enhanced and monitored
The new stops and routes provide shorter travel times to and from Maasvlakte and Europoort
The Maasvlaktehopper now runs between Maassluis Centre
Maasland viaduct and Rugge bus station in Brielle and various stops along the Maasvlakte and Europoort
These journey times reflect the working hours of shift workers and office workers at the port
bus lines 102 and 105 will run via the Maasdelta Tunnel
connecting Voorne-Putten & Rozenburg with Schiedam
Driving to Schiedam via the Maasdelta Tunnel and Holland Tunnel will significantly reduce journey times for many travellers
especially those heading to the centre of Rotterdam
