US parent company Americold is closing its Westland facility
marking the end of the refrigeration company in 's-Gravenzande
which was known for many years as ADB Cool Company
was acquired in 2015 by Agro Merchants Group
The complex has a total capacity of 15,000 pallet spaces and 150,000 m³ of refrigerated and freezer space
A spokesperson for Americold told WOS that the decision was made after a "careful assessment of our operations." Employees and customers have been informed
though an exact closure date and transition period are still under discussion
The group has not provided specific reasons for the closure
though it is known that Americold has suffered significant financial losses worldwide in recent years

Anyone entering BASF I Nunhems' greenhouse in 's-Gravenzande gets to see developments from around the world for lettuce growing on water
Butter lettuce is a big market in the Benelux
where more and more lettuce is grown on water instead of in the ground
the cultivation of baby leaves and teen leaf lettuce is growing fast
trio lettuce and varieties with a crispy bite
there are new introductions on the horizon
in 2025 we have three new varieties in the pipeline for butterhead lettuce and for crispy
about five to seven varieties," indicates the Customer Marketing Specialist BNL & DACH
The breeding company is working on a range of varieties for diverse climates
"Think of cold climates with exposed cultivation
tropical climates." The challenge is to develop varieties that do well in multiple conditions
TrioslaThe largest assortment can be found in the greenhouse in 's-Gravenzande for trio lettuce
The Customer Marketing Specialist estimates that as many as 60 different varieties can be found here
of which five to six are currently commercial
"It is a relatively stable market in terms of acreage
The biggest development is in the varieties
we keep making continuous strides in quality
some seventy percent of the trio lettuce range has been renewed."
Trio lettuce growers like to grow a fixed variety mix all year round
that's what growers like to see." This crop is about color
Because trio lettuce involves three varieties together
it happens that growers also combine varieties from BASF I Nunhems with varieties from other breeding companies
"That makes it a nice challenge for us to advise growers on the best combination of varieties," he says
They also take into account the lighting at a grower's premises
"70 or 90 micromoles of LED can already make a difference."
Butterhead lettuceWhen growing butterhead lettuce
the breeding company recommends growing their varieties with at least 70 to 80 micromol LED
Two new varieties are coming up in this segment
a variety with which Jochim says growers can gain several dozen grams in weight
He additionally points out another variety
"The variety on the right gains weight towards the end of cultivation
while the variety on the left has a more pinkish heart," he says
while the variety on the left has a more rosette-like heart."
CompareNinety percent of the knowledge when introducing a variety is already available to the breeding company
The last five to 10 percent is apparent from cultivation in practice
This is why external trials at an early stage are of great added value
The growers who visit the greenhouse at this time of the year
but above all to see how varieties are doing in 's-Gravenzande compared to in their own greenhouse
"We grow here partly data-driven with help from LetsGrow.com and Hoogendoorn
among others." The misting that we hear turn on several times on Tuesday afternoon in week 39 is autonomously controlled
Crispy popularIn another part of the greenhouse
the focus is on baby leaf and Teen Leaf lettuce
It also features varieties for the crispy bite segment
"Demand for these types of varieties is still rising
and not only in the North American market but also in other regions." Jochim picks up the phone in between
He is speaking to an international customer
Interest in lettuce cultivation on water is strongly international
Increasingly high-density cultivationBoth in outdoor cultivation and also in the greenhouse
BASF I Nunhems is betting on varieties that can be grown at high density
there is a lot of interest in these kinds of varieties
for which options are available in more and more segments
"Finstar is a well-known variety for this in the crispy segment
and Little Gem for cultivation at high density
we are also constantly developing whole new leaf types
the breeders also try to predict growth curves and weight for the grower as well as possible
we try to make cultivation as predictable as possible for the grower
A good grower can then always add pluses on top of what we have calculated
Outdoor cultivationIn outdoor cultivation of iceberg lettuce
BASF I Nunhems has been developing varieties for several years to look at possible further mechanization of harvesting
we work together with different parties in the market
an iceberg lettuce with an extended neck is on the way
besides the convenience of mechanical harvesting
must also meet the highest standards about (for example) disease resistance."
The focus is therefore on combining the 'extended neck concept'
but it will take a few years to develop the right varieties with the right combination of traits."

The beach Slag Vlugtenburg in 's-Gravenzande has been declared the cleanest beach in the Netherlands
which is the beach organization of the Netherlands
The beach was given a 9.84 rating out of 10 and is
the best of the 94 beach locations that were inspected
The beach in Zuid-Holland did just about better than the second-placed beach on Hollum in Ameland
Inspectors visited every location three times
and then they returned twice up to halfway through July to see how clean the beaches were
Four grades were handed out based on this: for the parking lot
and the state of the beach up to the coastline
"And then the differences can be minimal," said a spokesperson for the organization
Slag Vlugtenburg's victory was partly due to the good cooperation of various parties
It radiates something nice and beautiful," said the spokesperson
The inspectors said that the Dutch beaches are in good shape
"It is with a few exceptions a joy to inspect the Dutch coast," stated Strand Nederland
who organized the beach inspections with the Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management
"The inspectors noticed that beach entrepreneurs and governments are working hard on awareness and clean behavior of the guests
This seems to translate into less and less litter."

but her absolute determination to win meant that team events were not the best fit
The 's-Gravenzande native relished the team experience, but knew that skating was the vehicle that would unlock her athletic potential.
Most importantly, the sport put the spark back into her eyes, which the long track skater has learnt to accentuate with her characteristic black eye liner.
“That's my signature,” she says of her classic eye make-up.

Bayer has announced that it is introducing two Tomato On the Vine (TOV) Centres in the Netherlands and Belgium
where it will present all Nunhems tomato on the vine varieties
Bayer hosted hundreds of visitors at the Bayer Tomato Demo Greenhouse
Tomato growers and other companies active in the high-tech tomato business have visited the facilities in ‘s-Gravenzande in the Netherlands to see the latest developments in the Nunhems’ variety portfolio and to discuss new trends
Bayer has introduced a new approach: TOV centres on two new locations
at De Bakker Westland in Kwintsheul (Netherlands) and Tomato Masters in Deinze (Belgium)
introduction- and commercial tomato on the vine varieties
Crop Sales Manager Tomato High Tech: “We realised that if we want to meet the real demands of our customers we have to make the next step; i.e
offering tailor made solutions beyond the seed.” This means that Bayer will focus on offering solutions that are tailor made to the needs of the individual grower that go beyond the variety itself
“Targeted solutions means that we will no longer present our complete assortment and pipeline in one greenhouse
but carefully select the relevant material and focus on the opportunities that it brings,' Knieriem added
The Bayer location in ‘s-Gravenzande will remain the basis for customer activities in the Westland and breeding of hydroponic lettuce
whereas the tomato greenhouse itself will be used for the development of high-tech tomatoes under artificial light
for which Bayer is investing to develop better solutions

Photo: Reddingsteam ZeedierenTwo rare loggerhead turtles washed up on the Dutch coast on Saturday
one on the Dishoek beach near Vlissingen and the second at ‘s-Gravenzande
The Vlissingen turtle’ shell was studded with mussels and it is in a severely weakened condition
“Normally they take the mussels off themselves,” Jaap van der Hiele from the Reddingsteam Zeedieren told broadcaster NOS
“The mussels make them increasingly heavy and then it becomes even harder to find food so they weaken even more.”
Both turtles have been taken to the Blijdorp zoo in Rotterdam
the only place in the country that is equipped to care for sea turtles
In October an extremely rare and endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii) was caught by fishermen off the coast of Walcheren in Zeeland
a second Kemp’s Ridley turtle washed up on a beach in Zoutelande
Those turtles are thought to have been carried away from their natural habitat in the Gulf of Mexico on the Gulf Stream and may have become disoriented by the lower sea temperatures
Loggerhead turtles are better equipped to deal with colder temperatures but are not normally spotted in the Netherlands
They too may have ended up in the wrong current

Several technical adjustments have been made at Young Grow recently
Young Grow proceeded to purchase 4 induction carts of the BeMotion BeTrac1 type from Berg Hortimotive - not a new name for the grower
as they also already had 20 tubular rail cars from Berg
the wires of the system are milled into the concrete floor
the carts drive along the concrete path from the greenhouse to the processing area
so there was always one employee driving back and forth
Peace and quietThe induction carts are pleasing
"There is much more peace and quiet in the company now
You now constantly have a couple of carts going back and forth at a low speed
you had someone constantly tearing back and forth to keep up in the peak season
This gives more peace of mind: there are fewer peaks
you have a more constant supply of tomatoes to the barn
and it also gives a greater sense of security
especially as the BeTrac has a front safety system
then up to eight harvest wagons full of tomatoes are latched behind it
The employee working there at the time directs the BeTrac1 towards the shed by pressing a button
It then goes to the processing area through a KOAT automation
and then empty boxes are automatically put back on
Easy installationThe new BeTrac1 induction carts required a few modifications
In order to properly align Berg Hortimotive's carts and KOAT's processing line

BASF Vegetable Seeds completed its second full growing season in line with the Plant Empowerment philosophy at its Nunhems location in 's-Gravenzande
With the support of the multidisciplinary team
the crop production strategy has now been put into practice
BASF Vegetable Seeds focuses on what the company calls 'integrated breeding' - combining the knowledge of plant breeders with technology and emerging science
but to provide our customers and the entire chain with innovation
Together with Hoogendoorn Growth Management
one of the Plant Empowerment Implementation Partners
we previously conducted a trial with hydroponic lettuce at our Nunhems location in 's-Gravenzande
based on autonomous and data-driven growing
The results were so impressive that we decided to try it for tomatoes as well
That's where the other Plant Empowerment Implementation Partners came in," the company states
BASF and all the partners set up a GPE trial on about 500 m2
the seed company focused mainly on building its dataset on crop performance as a basis for decision-making
BASF tested the Plant Empowerment principles in practice
analysis of production data showed that the strategy had produced a total yield of 121 kg per m2
The Plant Empowerment Implementation Partners recently helped BASF get the 2021/2022 season started
the Plant Empowerment philosophy is being tested on a different variety: truss cherry tomato Adorion
BASF plans to use all the data to develop a reproducible growing strategy that it can offer to every customer who buys Adorion seeds
This will enable those growers to get the best out of this variety
and hopefully from other varieties in the future
Could you do without large fans above the crop in the greenhouse
During a visit to a new-build project for a tomato grower
What if you pull the air through the greenhouse column
the editor of this article has a Caeli fan unit specially designed for this purpose in his possession
which is powerful enough to move a high capacity of air."
the first large Dutch pilot project will be equipped with 308 units
Several other applications are still pending
It shows that something unique has been developed in 's-Gravenzande
tailored to the standard column dimensions," Sven is firm
Sven with the first Caeli™ fan unit at the new construction project of Van der Avoird Trayplant
Smart equipmentThe fan in question will hang above the crop and will integrate into the greenhouse column
an adjustment in the screen cloth is not necessary
That was precisely one of the things that Alcomij wanted to achieve
Sales Manager at the producer of greenhouse cover systems
"It was colleague Gerhard who came up with the idea of drawing the air through the greenhouse column."
Alcomij was already busy making products 'smart'
Sven had the great task of working out the fan concept
"I'm a mechanical engineer and I made a lot of prototypes," he says
a feasibility study was also carried out by Wageningen University & Research
with the main question being: How much air can you pump through the greenhouse column
Air movementThe first test was then carried out in Zwaagdijk-Oost
'version 0' of the unit was placed against the greenhouse column
Sven: "A grower did a trial there with tomatoes
It was a great opportunity for us to test our fan unit in this real-life greenhouse
We immediately achieved good results and then we went all out."
The first main idea behind the concept was to dehumidify the air under the screen
Sven: "The idea of separately controlling the air movement was added later
the valve position and the speed were made adjustable
where there are sensors that take measurements."
The unit draws in air from above and below in the greenhouse column
This is to measure the local temperature and humidity
AlgorithmSven experimented a lot with all the possible positions
after which he wrote his algorithm to control these actions and thus automate the unit
"It is far too complicated for people to set the settings for each greenhouse column themselves"
each greenhouse column also becomes a measuring point
we demanded a lot from our R&D and also regularly exchanged ideas with colleagues in the field."
You soon saw that when the algorithm controlled the unit
the temperature differences in the greenhouse were much less." Erik: "Now
you still come across considerable temperature differences in greenhouses
sometimes up to six to seven degrees Celsius
Even with the latest climate computers that are set very accurately
growers still have spots in the greenhouse where the climate is difficult to control."
Holes are made in the greenhouse column to integrate the units
Sven: "Placing a unit in each greenhouse column creates a very dense sensor network
determines how the air movement must be created to obtain a uniform greenhouse climate."
The Caeli unit is equipped with three modes: off
Sven soon realized that the automatic option is by far the best
"This was evident from the tests we carried out
I expect that it will only get better in the future."
Screen strategySven expects the growers who work with the unit to adapt their screen strategy
they get a lot of insight into the greenhouse climate
they have a specific way of making the climate uniform
I expect growers to start chopping differently
for example." Erik adds: "At the basis of this concept is also the development of Het Nieuwe Telen (in translation: The New Cultivation
You can see that for energy-saving reasons
the vents stay closed longer and growers work more with screens
Our unit is then a tool to create air movement."
The team was warned about the dangers of cold spots
With alterations to the screen fabric when installing systems such as fans
" This is not an issue with the Caeli climate solution
There are no limitations to the screen installation," Sven responds
"It is possible to install several zip-in screens without making any adjustments or holes in the screen fabric
Cold spots can also occur in the greenhouse column
The Caeli unit is equipped with a flap to counteract this problem
PilotVan der Avoird Trayplant has installed 308 units in a new greenhouse for strawberry and raspberry seedlings
This is the first large-scale pilot project with the units
The units will be integrated into the columns of the greenhouse
Erik: "That is an advantage because it allows you to install the ventilators at the very last moment
which prevents contamination with construction dust."
the units will be placed between the layer with strawberries
Between both layers is a distance of three meters
the fan units are located at the height of the top of the plant
"This makes the system different from a semi-closed greenhouse
where the air is blown from slots under the plant," explains Erik
We don't heat or cool the air and rely solely on air movement."
Sven hands over the first copy to Jurgen Blom
a cultivation specialist at Van der Avoird Trayplant
CapacityTests already showed that the units have enough capacity
they even think that even less capacity may be needed
Erik: "You use the air movement in a very targeted way from many points
How much capacity you have available does depend on the size of the section
it is also possible to monitor the climate differences that arise when a screen door is opened and to alternate with periods in which the fans bring the climate back into balance
That way you keep control of the homogeneity and increase the capacity of the dehumidification using the Caeli unit."
the Caeli™ unit creates a more homogeneous climate
Anyone who also wants to dehumidify needs a connection to the climate computer
All the units can be controlled wirelessly
"This is done from the cloud," Sven explains
"We are still investigating whether local control is also an option
once the units are installed (insert the plug
the grower does not have to worry about them
we will soon be offering the grower integrated technology for finely measuring and controlling the greenhouse climate." Sven concludes
"We are certain that with Caeli we have developed something unique for greenhouse farming: a simple yet complex greenhouse climate solution."

Greenhouse constructor KUBO has opened its own test centre in 's-Gravenzande in the Netherlands: Blue Lab
In two Ultra-Clima greenhouses totalling 1,600 square metres in cultivation area
the Monster-based greenhouse constructor will be testing new concepts in practical circumstances
with respect to both technology and software
The first pilot aims to further explore the possibilities of autonomous cultivation
the development department was extended and incorporated in a separate company
The new KUBO Innovations now also has its own site at the same business park
KUBO wants to give an extra boost to innovation in greenhouses and software
Tests in practiceKUBO Innovations will also be the user of the Blue Lab
you also want to be able to test it in practice
We cannot always do that under real conditions at a grower
which is not the intention," Director Wouter Kuiper explains why they decided to have their own site
The test centre must also provide scope for the continued development of the Ultra-Clima greenhouse
Start with autonomous cultivationThere is currently a pilot with autonomous cultivation
without human intervention in the greenhouse
KUBO is working with suppliers of horticultural computers that have already developed software for them
which has launched the Plant Empowerment programme
Wouter Kuiper: "Autonomous cultivation is about much more than just the software
It is a completely different way of cultivating
It is not the case that you install the software in the computer and that everything instantly works
We will need several years to fully develop it and know how it works."
The pilot will also generate input for Smart Growing
the KUBO service to support entrepreneurs worldwide in cultivation
analysing and making available cultivation data and information about the greenhouse performance
Sensors in both greenhouses generate as much data as possible
KUBO has high expectations for autonomous cultivation
"This is a way to grow more industrially with less risk
which many investors in horticultural and non-horticultural countries are looking for
We want to find out what else is possible in comparison with cultivation by people
The results do not necessarily need to relate to more growth
so that one grower can manage many more greenhouses
we see that cultivation expertise is not always available
We have also set ourselves the goal to make cultivation easier
Blue Lab will make a huge contribution to that."
'Also interesting for the Netherlands'Besides the two Ultra-Clima test greenhouses
there is a 5000-metre conventional Venlo greenhouse with tomatoes
Autonomous cultivation does not always need to be in combination with the Ultra-Clima greenhouse
The pilot will also provide new insights for the Venlo greenhouse
"Autonomous cultivation can also be interesting for the Dutch horticultural sector
We already have an extremely high level of cultivation here
but we are always looking for ways to improve."

"It's the best things that you remember from the old days
Going to the auction with a boat full of tomatoes on a sunny day
that it could be cold and that the work was tough." Cees and Leo van der Lans are adamant
they took over the company from their father
they were already running the company because their father suffered from rheumatism
but after 11 years we wanted to do a bit more
We then switched to cherry tomatoes." And right on time
because the Dutch products were labeled en masse as 'Wasserbombe' in the beginning of the nineties
Tasty tomatoesIt marked the turnaround in the sector
The tomato-on-the-vine was introduced around the same time
The brothers remember well getting acquainted with the tasty cocktail tomato at breeder Enza Zaden
"We could not understand that a tomato bigger than a cherry tomato
We then switched to tomatoes-on-the-vine."
The British supermarket Tesco was a satisfied customer
"They were so happy they asked whether we could supply the tomatoes year round
Although we had experimented a bit with lighting at the time
but in the season we were growing tomatoes
The brothers focused their attention on lighting
they set up a greenhouse in De Lier in no time with grow lights
we started moving towards year-round cultivation
and Spain now sees the Netherlands as an important competitor."
Step by step expansionLooking back at the many expansions of the nursery
Cees and Leo admit they had not foreseen this when they were young
"When we left the old greenhouse of our father and built a new greenhouse on the Cubalaan
we were already gone in the direction of 's-Gravenzande
The expansion to Maasland in 1990 was new with regards to control
because we were no longer living near the company
This was a first step towards other locations that would follow
Since the cooperation of 'neighbor' Jan van Marrewijk in Dinteloord
There is 40 hectares available for new construction
and so the planning is to grow to 100 hectares or more
Heat from co-generationWhile Leo is mainly focusing on the cultivation
It was his idea to get a CHP installation for his greenhouse on the Burgerweg
"Some co-generation was installed at growers
but the energy companies removed them because they were not effective
A grower knows much better at which times the heat and electrics must be deployed
You must also include a heat storage in the design of your company."
Cooperation to strengthen the sectorInstead of keeping their discoveries to themselves
Cees: "We do not like to keep things to ourselves
There were excursions to discuss cultivation affairs
We believe that cooperation between all parties helps to strengthen the sector."
They founded the packing company GreenPack
which packed tomatoes from various growers
and better focus means more growth." More cooperations with fellow growers followed
Success is created by cooperating with people you have known for a long time
but we do not create books full of agreements
RevolutionThe next generation has joined the management by now
Leo: "We are from the generation that uses a hose to water a plant
The transition to substrates was a veritable revolution
and now we are heating one of our locations with geothermal heat."
"Things used to change more in a short time
The greenhouse we built in 2018 in Dinteloord is exactly the same as the greenhouse Maasdijk in 2007
Maybe the horticulture industry has seen the biggest developments in our generation
but that does not mean the sector is done growing
As we laugh now about going to the auction by boat
we might laugh in twenty years time that we are doing everything by hand."
Robots in the greenhouseCees sees a future for robots in the greenhouse
"Labor has become an enormous challenge in the last three years
The developments in robotization are not progressing rapidly
I have been working with a leaf picking robot
The trouble of robots is that they have to deal with variable conditions in the greenhouse
Every plant is different and the temperature and light influences the robot
The packing process has already been automated for the most part
Letting goIn spite of all the hustle and bustle of stakeholders - from marketing organisation Harvest House to Greenpack and from detachment agency NLJobs to breeder Axia etc
- the brothers take all the time for this interview
"All these activities should not increase our workload
It is an art to gather good people around you

Three escaped meerkats are on the loose in the Zuid-Holland town of ‘s-Gravenzande
The animals escaped from their enclosure in owner Jan Knoppert’s backyard about two weeks ago and have been on the run ever since
and other animal lovers on the lookout for the meerkats
But “whenever we arrive where the meerkats have been seen
they’re already gone,” the Westland horticulturist told the broadcaster
“We recently spent a full day chasing the three again
and Knoppert took extra care to ensure their enclosure was locked up tight
It is unclear whether the three meerkats are still adventuring together or have wandered off on their own
How long they’ll be able to survive on the loose in the town depends on the circumstances
biologist Eva Schippers of the AAP Foundation said to Omroep West
these animals cannot survive in Dutch nature
And that’s the thing because it is obviously not very warm here now.”
they mainly eat insects and small mammals like mice and bird eggs
are used to being presented with their food.”
Knoppert has confidence that his meerkats have enough to eat
The whole town actually takes care of them.” He hopes they’ll be able to catch the critters and return them to their now even more secure enclosure before they move into the dunes
Keeping meerkats as pets in the Netherlands is legal, but that will change on 1 January 2024. Then, the country will introduce a “positive list” stating which animals can be kept as pets instead of listing which are banned
The list does not include popular exotics like meerkats
People who already have these animals as a pet can keep them until they die but are not allowed to breed with them or sell or trade them
