museums around the globe in your inbox each week In the heart of the Dutch city of Schiedam, where one in six children grows up in poverty, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam Their exhibition ‘Out of Poverty’ is not just about viewing art; it is a lifeline woven through the canvas of real-life stories By merging art history with pressing social issues the museum exemplifies how cultural institutions can foster community engagement and address contemporary challenges At a recent MuseumNext conference they emphasised the importance of collaboration in tackling the complex and sensitive subject of poverty the museum aimed to illuminate poverty while ensuring that the voices of those affected were central to the exhibition The journey began with extensive historical research led by van der Vaart and a team of dedicated interns to gather relevant content shaped by the input of local residents the museum commissioned three artists to create new works inspired by the experiences of those living in poverty and an architect were integral to the co-creative process working alongside community members to ensure the exhibition was meaningful and impactful One of the most innovative aspects of the exhibition was a project by Rotterdam-based artist Maarten Bel titled “Wish Works.” This initiative allowed individuals living in poverty to submit a wish for something they needed but could not afford Bel then created watercolour drawings of these wishes The proceeds from each sale were used to purchase the item for the person who made the wish directly linking art with tangible support for the community The museum faced the challenge of engaging residents living in poverty who might not naturally gravitate towards participating in a museum program The museum invited individuals to join the co-creative process through partnerships with five local organisations This effort resulted in a group of 11 women referred to as “experience experts,” who played a pivotal role in shaping the exhibition each session hosted by a different social partner in various parts of the city allowed the participants to share their stories and perspectives on poverty shared her struggle between feeding her children and paying the rent her story became a vital part of the exhibition adding a deeply personal dimension to the art on display Four central themes emerged from the discussions: lack of freedom and relationships with others and children The experience experts were further involved by bringing in personal objects and even participating in guided tours of the exhibition Their engagement was instrumental in creating an exhibition that was not only informative but also deeply personal and empowering The inclusion of art in the exhibition played a crucial role in its success there were reservations about adding another layer to an already complex project the art component attracted a broader audience and garnered significant media attention including a rave review in a national newspaper two and a half weeks after the opening The exhibition achieved its goal of making a meaningful impact on various audiences It provided those unfamiliar with poverty a glimpse into the daily struggles faced by the affected individuals offered hope and visibility to those living in poverty and educated professionals who work with poverty-related issues about the personal dimensions of their work fostering a sense of enlightenment and empathy The exhibition’s success has spurred the museum to implement several ongoing initiatives aimed at supporting the community These include free children’s parties and art classes for those who cannot afford them and a shop selling products that benefit social partners the museum has become a distribution point for menstrual products and donates leftover materials to those in need particularly with figures like Vanessa Umbo have been instrumental in bringing attention to the exhibition at the national level including visits from politicians and government officials This high-level engagement highlights the exhibition’s potential to influence policy and drive social change Stedelijk Museum Schiedam’s exhibition on poverty showcases the power of art and collaboration in addressing social issues By meaningfully involving the community and trusting the co-creative process the museum crafted a compelling exhibition that fostered a sense of empowerment and visibility for those affected by poverty This initiative serves as a model for other institutions seeking to bridge the gap between art and society demonstrating that museums can play a vital role in addressing contemporary social challenges Dorien Theuns and Merel van der Vaart from Stedelijk Museum Schiedam spoke about their Out of He died of his injuries later that day. After the incident, police arrested a suspect of the same age. What happens next to such a young suspect? Usually, a suspect of that age is held in a police cell for a day or night for interrogation, Professor Bruning says the child is taken to a youth custodial institution as soon as possible The next question asked is: can the child be released pending trial as soon as possible releasing them pending trial is the preferable option juvenile probation and sometimes youth services become involved Measures can be taken such as an ankle bracelet or ordering house arrest Professor Bruning stresses that whether underage suspects end up  in criminal circles depends on the suspect's home situation and personal circumstances there is ‘one tiny advantage’ to young children getting involved in crime: ‘They're still somewhat easier to guide at that tender age.’ Effective Protection of Fundamental Rights in a pluralist world A 13-year-old boy was stabbed to death on the Fjorddal in Schiedam on Sunday evening The police arrested another 13-year-old boy for the crime The stabbing happened at around 5:20 p.m., the Rotterdam police said on X. Jumbo and Wärtsilä have their core business in the industry. The maritime character of the two companies was a key starting point for the project. The two companies are housed in a pair of separate buildings above a shared parking level. The buildings share a common design vocabulary, focused on the views over the water and the activity of the harbour area. The entrance square for both buildings is at the head of the Havenstraat. The facades on the north side form a compact volume, with alternating strips of balustrades and glass. Two broad stairways and an access ramp on the west side lead to the spacious deck, which forms an integral component of the volume and also acts as an outdoor terrace. First Floor PlanThis interplay of lines is amplified still further on the south side of the buildings, where they open themselves out towards the water. Large outdoor terraces, which are on a split level thanks to variations in the floor height, are located on both sides. The volumes are rounded off by roof awnings that extend far out from the building to provide shading from the sun. Courtesy of MVSA ArchitectsThe buildings stand in a perfectly attuned relationship to the water. The Nieuwe Maas, with its passing ships and its surrounding harbours, is clearly visible from the interior of the entire building. Conversely, the buildings and the business activities of Jumbo and Wärtsilä have a clear visual identity when seen from the water. Courtesy of MVSA ArchitectsJumbo originally had its premises in Rotterdam’s city centre. Now the employees’ passion for their work is made even stronger by the building and its relationship with its surroundings: the new head office is highly valued as a pleasant working environment by the employees. Courtesy of MVSA ArchitectsJumbo interior The Jumbo office is an extremely spacious building. The central atrium creates an open and pleasant working environment with enhanced interaction between Jumbo’s various departments. This is immediately tangible at the entrance. A broad stairway leads to the atrium, which forms the central heart of the building. All the key functions – for instance the boardroom, the conference room and the shared meeting areas such as the courtyard garden and the restaurant– are grouped around the atrium. Courtesy of MVSA ArchitectsThe atrium and the open work areas facilitate the free flow of communication between Jumbo’s various business units and departments. In addition to the central access via the buildings’ cores, an open connecting stairway has been placed to enable interaction between the departments. The atrium provides transparency: the river is visible even from the north side of the building. Section CThe open floors give a high level of flexibility in terms of layout, and reflect new working patterns. This is achieved by the way the space is divided, and by the creation of both open and closed work and meeting areas, concentration areas, shared desks and meeting plazas. Courtesy of MVSA ArchitectsAdjoining the atrium backlit screens with photos of Jumbo’s core activities on the wall present Jumbo’s identity The design of the building and the interior also complement each other perfectly in the materials and colours used and the white strips on the facades are extended into the indoor area You'll now receive updates based on what you follow Personalize your stream and start following your favorite authors If you have done all of this and still can't find the email no trains will be running between The Hague and Rotterdam on Saturday and Sunday This is the last weekend of the work on the track between the two cities no trains have been running between Rotterdam Centraal and Delft Campus for the past week and a half Schiedam Centrum is one of the stations on the line The Hague – Rotterdam where ProRail is improving the track for more train traffic the track work is necessary because the number of passengers is growing we are making tracks 1 and 2 suitable for train traffic again And we are making all kinds of adjustments to the track so that trains can travel faster.” Travelers between The Hague and Rotterdam can travel via Gouda NS buses will be running between Schiedam Centrum and Den Haag Hollands Spoor stations this weekend There is also a metro between Den Haag Centraal and Rotterdam Centraal The carrier also expects extra crowds in public transport on Saturday evening when Feyenoord plays against AZ in De Kuip Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Deutsche Hospitality recently signed an agreement for a new IntercityHotel in Rotterdam-Schiedam together with the joint venture between Dutch project development company De Veste Schiedam B.V The hotel is expected to open by the end of 2025 Chief Executive Officer at Deutsche Hospitality says: "We are proud to grow the IntercityHotel family in the Netherlands with De Veste Schiedam B.V The IntercityHotel in Rotterdam-Schiedam will strengthen our presence in the country whilst leading the way for the new “Next Gen” IntercityHotel concept - a milestone for the brand Guests can look forward to a stylish and contemporary hotel with smart F&B offerings as well as long-stay units that are increasingly in demand." and the army experts quickly made the grenade safe by scraping out the ancient gunpowder inside The Schiedam was carrying military stores from the English garrisons returning from the city of Tangiers in Morocco when it sank Those stores included several boxes of grenades like the ones that washed up at Dollar Cove said that the explosive grenades were some of the earliest examples of their kind and that they were used by English troops who were specially trained to throw them long distances such troops formed the first English regiments of grenadiers — a title still used by some British Army regiments today Felce said. The grenades were detonated by lighting gunpowder in a tube-like fuse that passed through the outer shell but they were certainly intended to kill the enemy," Felce said "I would like to know more about where and how they were constructed because it involves early engineering and metallurgical skills." Recent storms have disturbed the sand over the wreck of the Schiedam revealing several cannons and other debris from the ship that still lie beneath the seafloor One of the divers, Mark Milburn, told Live Science that they had returned to the undersea shipwreck site in recent weeks where they found that the sand had shifted during recent storms He said that the artifacts from the Schiedam wreck documented so far include 11 cannons boxes of hand grenades and several other iron objects "There is very little of the timber structure left," Milburn said … We will continue to monitor the site [and] we have permission to recover any artifacts we deem at risk." HBG bid unsuccessfully for a jackets contract in the Far East we can build jackets for water depths up to 60-70 m We may look for another site nearby in Rotterdam to build bigger jackets although we're not sure at this stage whether we'd want to compete with specialists in this field in Europe such as Aker Verdal and Dragados." HBG delivered its first offshore wind farm installation a 1,000-ton transformer platform for Horns Rev There are many more such projects in prospect across northern Europe but there are also "cultural" problems to resolve Wind energy companies tend to be unfamiliar with offshore sector standards as the client asked us to only build and transport Parent company HBG Group was recently sold by Dragados to Dutch conglomerate BAM which will likely entail another name change for the Schiedam fabricator
