real estate isn’t just a profession; it’s a legacy
With a family deeply involved in real estate — her husband and family build and develop luxury homes
while her father owns a prominent landscape design firm — Van Someren finds her expertise is in her DNA
with specialties in staging and marketing that have transformed the landscape of north Naperville and beyond
Van Someren’s journey into real estate was a natural evolution
“Becoming a real estate agent was a culmination of my life experiences and interests coming together,” she says
providing luxury-level service and exposure to home building and design
Van Someren brings not just a deep understanding of the market
but also a strong commitment to her clients
“The things I hear the most from my clients are how impressed they are with the level of service they receive well after the transaction is closed,” she notes
Working with people often breeds a lifelong partnership
in which clients know they can rely on her expertise long after the deal is done
serving as a commissioner for the Naperville Planning and Zoning Commission and as a board member of Endeavor Health’s Edward Foundation
Her philanthropic activities extend to volunteering
coaching girls’ volleyball for middle school and contributing to various charitable galas
It’s defined by the depth of the relationships
“I’m incredibly lucky to do all of my work from my personal network and receive referrals from that network,” she says
She adds that her business isn’t about being the biggest; it’s about fostering meaningful connections
For those aspiring to follow in her footsteps
Van Someren offers this advice: “Treat people with respect
be honest and build strong relationships that will last.”

Jamie Oliver’s CCO is helping bring excitement and cleaner labels to the frozen aisle – channelling the enthusiasm of her famous boss to battle own label
tucked away down a quiet back street in Islington
visitors walk straight into a huge open-plan development kitchen
boiling and searing the subsidised lunch offered to the 160-strong team
Behind them is a painted mural depicting various fruits
with ‘Brave’ emblazoned across it in capital letters
that’s where we really got excited to ask: what can we bring to truly disrupt the frozen category?”
What the brand plans to add to the category’s traditional strengths is two qualities that it believes have been in short supply: “chef credentials” and clean labels – the range has no preservatives
artificial colours or artificial flavourings
boldness and fun to the freezer was very much the proposition we wanted to focus on,” says van Someren
LondonAge: 49Family: Two stepkids and a big ol’ Chicago familyPotted CV: Global strategy director (Publicis Groupe); global strategy director (WPP); founder (Canteen Consulting); global food & beverage chair (Edelman); CCO (Jamie Oliver Group)Best advice received: From my father
in business and in life: treat people how you want to be treated yourselfBusiness motto: To work in food is a massive privilege but also a huge responsibilityBook currently reading: Butter by Asako Yuzuki
crime and the gorgeousness of butterItem you couldn’t live without: Butter!Hobbies: Cooking
yoga and seeing the beautiful British countrysideDream holiday: Eating my way through south east AsiaFavourite item in the new range: the roasted vegetable lasagne
The frozen range comprises mains including two lasagnes
moussaka and chicken tikka masala in a ready-meal format
plus ‘meal centres’ such as beef shin bourguignon and a pulled beef rib ragu
to which home cooks would add their own pasta or other sides
There’s also a range of frozen potato sides
mash and “next-level” beef-fat frozen chips that Oliver wanted to call ‘the best f***ing chips in the world’ before being assured that wouldn’t make it past the legal team
there are three vegetable options: chargrilled pesto veg
glazed carrots and a lemon-dressed green veg medley
So, the Jamie Oliver frozen food range is off to a good start. And there are more wins in the pipeline. Three of the mains will follow into Waitrose from October
All four of the frozen potato options will be available in Iceland from January
along with an as-yet-undecided number of the frozen veg SKUs
Listings in other retailers are expected to follow in Q1 next year
The decision to start with Iceland and Waitrose has raised some eyebrows given their different price profiles and shoppers
but van Someren says that the difference “is why we love it”
“Our ultimate goal is to beomnichannel
so we want to be across all retailers in the UK
we love that we’re starting with Iceland and Waitrose
Iceland is such a force in the frozen industry
and the values they’re championing we’re completely aligned to
And then to follow up with Waitrose demonstrates the stretch and the appeal of the brand and the range
It’s more culinary and it’s more premium – but at a price point that feels really accessible to the masses.”
Van Someren expects rsps may vary by retailer but will be “similar”
Benchmarking has been a key part of the process
and the new range will compete on price with brands
Recent months have seen swathes of NPD in ready meals
from retailers such as Waitrose along with restaurant brands such as The Real Greek
how does Jamie Oliver expect its offerings to win hearts and minds in a category that’s been inundated
and the three things that consistently come through are
The third part is what he’s stood for for so long around children’s health and food education
So when you have that level of recognition
and it stands for those kind of positive attributes – that’s really what we believe is going to drive this.”
Consumer trust has given Oliver and his band of talented behind-the-scenes chefs “permission” to reinvent the freezer aisle
“A lot of what we learned from research was that compromise is huge in the frozen category – a sense that you cannot get both tasty and healthy
It was really interesting to dig into some of the barriers
because that’s where the opportunity and the problems to solve really lie for us.”
Van Someren knows that private label is a force to be reckoned with: it accounts for two out of every three frozen products sold in the UK – particularly in areas like potatoes and vegetables
So it’s easy for brands to be frozen out before they’ve even begun
But “that’s precisely why the retailers are so excited by this,” she says
“In many of the conversations we’ve been having
they need to bring news to the frozen aisle
And brand is a way they’re investing in this
not everybody is going to be turning only to Jamie
they’ll be turning to different parts of the frozen aisle for different categories
but it’s about driving excitement into the category
and Jamie is a big draw so there’s a lot of interest.”
One person who is unsurprisingly excited by the whole venture is Oliver himself. The famously effusive celebrity chef has been as invested in the vibrant colours chosen for the packaging and the first listing secured with Iceland as he has in the recipes
And he’s really excited about going into frozen
It’s really important to him,” says van Someren
so to maintain accessibility and then layer on the joy
the love and the flavour is really exciting
He will always say: How can I be useful to as many people as possible

Grower Ties Verbaarschot is ramping up the share of renewable energy he can generate on his farms
he had barn roofs filled with solar panels
Now it is also the turn of the water basin at the cucumber grower in Someren
Bata Energy Solutions realized the project in Someren
When we spoke to William Arends from Bata about it in mid-July
the installation team was busy laying the cabling
installation of the anchoring is imminent and the estimate is that the project will be ready in a fortnight
It is not the first project with solar panels for the enterprising grower
we also realized 3 PV installations on the roofs for this grower."
the combination of solar panels on the roof and on the water basin provides the grower with 1.6 MWp of renewable electricity capacity
the cucumber grower fills in a large part of his base load of energy and also supplies electricity back
SDE subsidyAt the Lienden-based consultancy and installation company
they note that greenhouse horticulture is in high demand for renewable energy generation
the purchase costs of solar panels are relatively low and it is very interesting to step in," they say
SDE subsidies also help entrepreneurs make the move
Grower Ties also applied for SDE subsidies
but can also apply for such a subsidy completely ourselves for a customer if necessary." The SDE subsidy reimburses the difference between the cost price of generating green energy and the market price of energy
"The SDE subsidy provides a floor price for 15 years of solar power."
the panels have to be installed on the water basin
Bata Energy Solutions does not develop such floating systems itself but chooses what fits best with the customer
"We became active in constructing floating solar panel systems after requests from customers in the greenhouse industry," the energy specialist indicates
we only realize projects with Connectum's system because
The original Belgian system was chosen because it is maintenance-friendly and because the specialists at Bata like the cable management system
"The cables running from the panel to the inverter have to be good and safe
especially as you are dealing with cabling with water."
Also important: the system is easy to install
"You build the system per six panels at a time and not per individual panel
That also means that if the basin cover wears out once
you can take the system off the basin and put it back on much easier."
Transformer stations addedBata specializes in turnkey delivery of PV systems
including also 'the heavy electrical work' in William's words
To optimally connect the system in Someren to the greenhouse situation
it was decided to add two transformer stations
"One for connecting the solar panels on the roof in Someren and one for the solar panels on the water basin."
it is always a consideration to choose between alternating current or direct current
William points out a technical detail involved in turnkey delivery
"What works out best financially depends partly on how many meters you have to bridge with cables
One time a new transformer substation may be fine
while another time a low-voltage connection may be more economical." In Someren
also because of the plans of the grower who has space to add a new greenhouse
the decision was made to install new transformer stations
The placement of new transformer stations has already taken this into account
A recent energy development is that battery systems are being looked at
has also started specializing in floating solar panel systems and energy storage systems
and nowadays also realizes charging plazas
Our mission is to provide SMEs in the Netherlands with energy solutions in the broadest sense of the word."

My name is Rob van Someren Brand, and I’m a football coach for Special Olympics Germany in Berlin
I was born in June 1960 in Rotterdam in The Netherlands
I originally started working in the harbor of Rotterdam
I worked for almost seven years as an agent for a shipping company as well as a forwarding merchant
Although this job has made a good life possible for me
this job was not what I imagined for the rest of my life
Your job should be your hobby and your passion at the same time
In 1989, I wanted to change my path and follow my skills and my passion for working with people with intellectual disabilities. In the following years, I studied to become a professional coach and worked abroad as an animator
I started working as a sport therapist and a football coach for people with disabilities
the movement in all its forms and the fun we have are what make my job so joyful
I personally think I can convey those things very well and that’s what is needed
Being active with people with intellectual disabilities is what I love the most about my job
I am very proud to say that we have achieved so many great things together in my years as a coach
From personal development to new perspectives for the future (such as outsourced jobs and fixed positions)
to winning first place at the German championship tournament in 2018 and finishing second in 2019
As a coach for the Special Olympics Germany women’s national team
I attended the Special Olympics World Games in Athens in 2011 and Los Angeles in 2015
Those were the most amazing experiences for the athletes and for me
being a coach is not about winning or having “my own” team
every human being individually comes at first
as the health and my daughter are always the most important in my personal life
it is easy to see a big difference in the improvement of their fitness skills
Each athlete should be training themselves every day
When we are leading up to bigger competitions like National Games
I love to host training camps before big competitions so the whole team can improve together
we also focus more on the theory behind the game and then implement that theory in our training and our matches
I also train a men’s team that currently plays in a lower league
I have collected many great memories coaching at various levels
It is important for me to continue to learn new things as a coach
I constantly learn from my athletes and my teams

There is still not enough knowledge about the underlying causes to be able to better treat anxiety disorders and chronic insomnia
Eus van Someren and his research team want to change this
Van Someren has been fighting for years for the better treatment of insomnia and has made the Netherlands the international leader in the field of fundamental research into insomnia
“There is also a strong overlap in experienced complaints
This is also measurable in the activity of the brain and other organs
Overcoming these unbearable symptoms can be done better if we do not artificially separate day and night"
the European Research Council (ERC) of the European Commission made the exceptional decision to award its most prestigious grant
the 'ERC Advanced Grant' to Van Someren for the second time
His research team has been trying for years to improve treatment of insomnia and to prevent its adverse consequences for mental health
Their discoveries have made the Netherlands the international leader in the field of fundamental research into insomnia
Via slaapregister.nl
- a Dutch website for recruiting volunteers for sleep research - his team is looking for research participants who
Thousands of people can contribute to the research by filling in questionnaires
Hundreds of them can also take measurements of their brain activity before
during and after sleep in the comfort of their own bed
Van Someren expects that people will find it easier to control their anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms if they sleep better
Van Someren: "From my many conversations with patients
I have noticed time and again how difficult it apparently is to get past pigeonholing
Being 'upset' always includes a whole range of things that are not going well
we really need to leave pigeonholing behind
my fantastic team can make great strides in achieving this
The European Research Council (ERC) is part of the European Commission. The ERC awards grants for pioneering research to a select number of excellent scientists
It is exceptional that Van Someren has now been awarded this most prestigious grant for the second time
His previously awarded project (2015) has yielded many innovative and applicable insights
we now have a better understanding of why insomnia can lead to depression and how we can prevent it

Republican Scott Fitzgerald (right) is running for re-election to the U.S
House of Representatives to represent Wisconsin’s 5th Congressional District
His opponent is Democrat Mike Van Someren (left)
Editor's Note: This election took place on Nov. 8, 2022. You can find the results of the election here
WAUKESHA — Republican Scott Fitzgerald is running for re-election to the U.S
The Freeman asked both candidates the same questions ahead of the November election
Freeman: What achievement are you most proud of
which provides more than 3.5 million toxic-exposed veterans the benefits and health care they deserve
getting over the finish line and signed into law
I know how important it is that those who have served are not deprived of the benefits they have earned and the PACT Act is a big step forward towards assisting many veterans and their families
Van Someren: My proudest achievement is my family
my dad a truck driver and my mom an administrative assistant
We lived in a trailer court for the first five years of my life while my parents saved up to build the house they still live in today
My parents raised me to work hard and were supportive of anything I wanted to pursue
I was able to take advantage of opportunities as they became available including walking on with the Wisconsin Badgers football team (and being the first in my family to go to college)
pursuing my law degree at Marquette University
but raising two wonderful daughters with my wife Renee is what’s most important
Freeman: What is the biggest issue facing Wisconsin
Fitzgerald: Everywhere I go in Southeast Wisconsin
economic prosperity is the number one issue for Wisconsinites
Inflation and high gas prices have hurt families and businesses across our state immensely
which have contributed to severe inflation
must be replaced with fiscal sanity and pro-growth policies
Van Someren: There are many issues facing Wisconsin
but I think the most immediate and pressing issue is the cost of groceries and gas
and making sure wages are going up to meet these increased costs
We need an economy that works for everybody and a level playing field for all
Very large businesses are able to do what they want
while small businesses and workers struggle to get by and do right by their customers
We need more competition so that prices are kept in check
and we have cutting-edge goods and services
and citizens have real control over their lives
Freeman: What is something people don’t know about you
Fitzgerald: I’m going to be a first-time grandfather in December
SIGN UP
Van Someren: I’m generally an open book so there’s not much that people don’t know about me
a couple of things are that I’m up by 4:30 or 5 each morning
Freeman: What will you do to ensure citizens have confidence in the election process
they put faith in our system and that system needs to work
and Americans become skeptical of their vote
the trust our system is built upon collapses
Election integrity is a top issue for voters
Voter ID laws and access to identification
and restricting tax-exempt charitable organizations from funding official election organizations is critical to ensuring individuals’ votes count and our elections cannot be manipulated
Van Someren: I have a plan to strengthen American democracy, and voters can check it out at my website MikeVanSomeren.com
The highlight is implementing policies protecting the integrity of elections without disenfranchising those who have the right to vote
This means free IDs that are easily obtained by voters
voting machines that aren’t connected to the internet
paper ballot backups to all voting machines
and reforming the Electoral College and the Electoral Count Act so the will of the people is enacted
We also need to ensure that gerrymandering is a thing of the past so an individual voter’s vote isn’t undermined by where they live
and that eligible voters can easily and securely cast their ballots
Making election day a national holiday and extended early voting will ensure all eligible voices are heard
we should enhance transparency by making sure that everybody knows where money for political campaigns and campaign ads is coming from in real time
Freeman: What will you do to address rising crime
what will you do to make sure something like the Waukesha Christmas Parade massacre never happens again
Fitzgerald: Crime is impacting our communities
endangering the safety of our families and children
Despite calls by some to the defund the police
I proudly support our law enforcement and have voted to give them the tools necessary to maintain public safety
The tragic Waukesha Christmas Parade attack devastated our community in ways words cannot express and was entirely preventable
the Pretrial Release Reporting Act and the Keeping Violent Offenders Off Our Streets Act
to ensure that pretrial release factors and the development of criminal history reports are considered when assessing bail
we can prevent dangerous criminals from being released back into the public by reckless district attorneys
we need to allocate more funds to hire police officers
since the number of police officers per capita has declined since 2000
evidence-driven violence prevention programs is also key to reducing crime at the local level and should be used to determine what issues are handled by police and what issues are handled by other professionals

‘I’ve always had a thing about removing stuff from my bikes’
‘Bike Shed’ founder talks Maico 600s and riding around the capital
It was the only way to get round to the pubs and meet girls
I lived in Sussex and if you didn’t have a bike you didn’t have transport so you didn’t go out
The first proper bike I owned was a Suzuki TS125X
After that I stayed loyal to Suzuki and bought a TS250X
I had a friend who had a mate who was an excellent motocrosser and we used to go to Bedham quarry
Because it was a working quarry it changed from one weekend to the next so we’d spend time making tracks
It taught me more about bike control than anything since
After the TS250X I went a bit crazy and bought a Maico 600
It was a motocross bike converted into an enduro machine and I loved it
a dirt bike on a Q plate with battery lights
There was no sidestand so I had to find a wall to lean it against every time I stopped
A guy that lived near me was an old school courier and had a GT550 painted all black and I thought
‘that looks like a more practical solution’
He crashed the LC4 within a week because he had really short legs
I rode that GT for ages until I sold it to a policeman
When did you start hankering after retro-styled machines
I had a very cool uncle who owned a GPz900R so I ended up getting one of those
the black and silver model and it was such a great machine
It got me into Kawasakis and I went a bit retro buying a Z650
but that was a bit gutless so I ended up with a Z1R
That bike was ridiculously overpowered for the chassis
‘why is that mirror so big when they make smaller mirrors
Or why do I need a giant number plate when I can have a tiny one?’ so that’s how it all started
I’ve got a heavily modified Triumph Bonneville T100
a Paul Smart Ducati Sport Classic 1000 that I’ve modified with better brakes
lights and switchgear and also taken the fairing off
And of the bikes that came to Bike Shed 2016
We’ve curated all 150 bikes at the event so we love them all in some way or other
But if I had to pick one it would be the Harley flat-tracker by Shaws Speed and Custom
It’s not a replica of an XR750 but quite old school with a Roland Sands tank and seat and these big swept bars

piled on 22 pallets and without stamps indicating that tax had been paid on them
were found by police during another investigation
Should the cigarettes have reached the Dutch market
the treasury would have lost out on some €3.6 million in duty
one of whom is a 45-year-old Polish national
The price of a packet of 20 cigarettes went up by almost a euro earlier this year to around €11.10 as a part of further government moves to discourage smoking
Once every two years researchers collect empty cigarette packets that have been thrown on the street and check their origins, to gain an insight into smokers’ behaviour in the Netherlands.
In 2021, during the last survey, 15% of the empty packets had contained cigarettes which had not been subject to Dutch tobacco duties. But that had risen to 25% last year, the ministries said on Tuesday.
While nearly 19% of the cigarettes had been bought in a shop in another country, 4% were either fake branded cigarettes or had been smuggled in. Two years previously, just 1% were either fake or illegal.
Research by the public health institute RIVM also indicates that smokers buy around 10% of their tobacco abroad, by either importing it themselves or asking others to do so.

Leading his own research group specialized in sleep at the Dutch Brain institute
van Someren has discovered that poor sleepers
who are twice as likely to develop depression as people who sleep well
face serious mental health risks as well as physical health problems such as diabetes
We are investigating if we can make a pill that calms REM sleep.”
Van Someren is going to work with an international group of researchers to develop a new type of sleeping pill. “We're going to look at different ways to address that restless REM sleep in poor sleepers
so they can get out of the downward spiral of bad sleep and even worse days."

Most people have probably experienced a sleepless night or two
‘Insomnia is defined as having difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep at least three nights a week for at least three months
It occurs even in perfect conditions for sleep and is not due to disturbances like noise or children waking you up
‘It's also essential that you experience difficulties in the daytime because of the way you sleep
People don't feel well during the day and experience difficulty performing or regulating their mood
There are people who sleep very little and feel perfectly fine during the day and aren't worried about their sleep – this is not insomnia.’
When I started to work on insomnia about 10 years ago
it was seen as something that was all in the head
The problem is that it's hard to measure insomnia - most people with the condition show the same kind of brainwaves that we think represent sleep
‘We had a breakthrough last year when we identified genes that put people at risk for insomnia for the first time
Continuation of this work would allow us to figure out in what cell types and brain areas they are highly expressed
That would really bring us closer to the underlying mechanisms for insomnia.’
Is insomnia equally as prevalent in males and females
‘Women are much more likely to suffer from insomnia
I think it's linked to genetics but it's too early to speculate based on the few genes we have found
Biology is complex and a gene can have a different meaning in different cell types and at different ages
we started doing a large meta-analysis of 35 insomnia studies in the Netherlands that examined almost 140 000 cases
I had expected that the increase in insomnia complaints in women would occur only with menopause but this is not the case
women are already more likely to suffer from insomnia.’
Are there environmental risk factors as well
‘Early childhood adversities boost the risk of insomnia later in life
Emotional neglect is the strongest predictor although other types of neglect
‘The idea we are now developing is that a combination of risk genes and negative early childhood experiences causes people to develop a brain that is optimally wired to be hyperalert to their environment
This type of brain is good at staying awake and being ready for action
unfortunately – the downside of a brain wired like that is the increased risk of experiencing sleep problems
“‘Early childhood adversities boost the risk of insomnia later in life.’
‘People who have experienced early childhood adversities are more likely to have restless REM (rapid eye movement) sleep
As if they have no time to enjoy nice dreams
but still try to monitor what's going on around them
We think that restless REM sleep happens even before a person first experiences insomnia.’
you are investigating the link between insomnia and depression
I thought about the two conditions in quite a linear way
one of two things can happen: either you fight off insomnia and don't develop depression or you transition from insomnia to depression – so that's what we want to investigate
I think that finding out why people are resilient is very important and can give new views on how to prevent depression
We found that genes linked to insomnia correlate highly with those that determine if you're likely to have depression
That suggests that depression may not necessarily follow from insomnia but rather that people may have a double vulnerability
Either depression or insomnia could happen first
This is something we will look at over the course of our studies.’
What advice would you give to people experiencing insomnia
‘There have been several studies on how to manage insomnia and the conclusion is that cognitive behavioural therapy works better for most people than using sleeping pills
Since about 10 % of the population is at risk of developing insomnia
there are likely to be sufferers in most workplaces
Insomniacs are more likely to be less productive so there is a hidden cost
Providing treatment is very affordable and would yield a double gain
because people with insomnia can be high performers.’

What can we learn from our colleagues regarding the role of women in science
ideas and actions on creating diverse and inclusive working environments
Dean of the faculty IDE and Bianca van Someren-Rijneveld
Many small steps in the right direction bring about change
You can’t change course and create a new culture all at once
but if you build it step by step and stick with it
We looked at gender diversity figures for the faculty of IDE and found that the percentage of female professors is lower than the percentage of female students
associate professors and assistant professors are 31%
The percentage of female students is slightly higher than 50%
Ena: “I thought you were going to say that we’re setting a good example as a faculty
You can see that there is now a good balance between men and women at the bottom of the pipeline
We’re doing our utmost to balance the pipeline at all levels
Bianca: “We are taking action on several fronts
There are now always women on the selection committees
it helps to consider your candidates more broadly and from different perspectives
The Selection Committee should reflect what we want for the faculty
so we also look at cultural diversity and diversity in specialisations
such as the Career Development Committee.”
to deal with diversity and inclusion in the faculty in the broadest sense
They will identify where the bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement are
This includes accessibility for people with disabilities and gender-neutral signs in the building.”
Ena: “Diversity ensures that you hear multiple perspectives; it prevents you from not seeing your blind spots
A diverse team can be more difficult to manage
because you might have to focus on fifteen aspects instead of five
many people like to look at things from different perspectives
We try to find a balance between the revolution of technology and the evolution of mankind
Your view of the world becomes richer and you gain more appreciation for others and their backgrounds
Ena: It’s important to make the most of all the opportunities you see to improve diversity
the composition of your workforce changes and diversity (gender and otherwise) improves at all levels
This conversation about diversity and creating opportunities for talent has been emphasised in recent years.”
Bianca: “We deliberately pay attention to talent in our R&D Cycle
who show talent and interest are given the opportunity to thrive
We regularly discuss the succession policy in the faculty and departmental management teams
We match the roles in the organisation and the development of a field with the talents and interests of staff
We very consciously look for diverse talent
Good science and good operational management both require diversity.”
Ena: “We discuss the path to professorship with those who aspire to it
This includes things that have nothing to do with academic expertise
These tasks are educational and also fun to do
It starts with making people aware that these opportunities exist and that it makes sense to take an active role in them
The conversation should be about what’s best for the faculty
in order to perform at its best and deliver the best output
Having only one woman in a team of men is not desirable
To make everyone feel at ease and avoid an ‘us and them’ mentality
women should make up at least 30% of a team
people need to be able to do what they’re good at and what they enjoy
A target is useful to check whether we’re on the right track
You can strive for the most complete organisation possible
There is still a lot of work to be done at TU Delft
our university has only four female departmental directors
Bianca: “The culture has changed in recent years
we now openly talk about the pressure of work and mental well-being
We ask our staff if they still feel happy and comfortable in their jobs
‘Undesirable behaviour’ is a recurring topic of discussion in the faculty management team.”
Ena: “There are many people from the LGBT community working in our faculty
It is important to me that these people feel at home
I truly believe that we have a community in which a lot is possible and a culture in which a lot can be discussed.”
Bianca: “The downside is that we sometimes have to have unpleasant conversations
It’s never nice to confront people about ineffective behaviour.”
Observing ineffective or undesirable behaviour and making it discussable is important
The fact that we are constantly in competition with each other in science is a flaw in the system
We need to see if this can be done differently
you notice that it is becoming more and more common to read each other’s project proposals or to ask colleagues for input for a tenure track or personal development plan
so that we can discuss anything with each other
Ena: “Many small steps in the right direction bring about change

What: Private party revealing Hines’ Residences at La Colombe d’Or
Where:Le Grand Salon de la Comtesse at La Colombe d’Or
The scoop: Houston real estate icon Gerald Hines and wife
along with La Colombe d’Or owner Steve Zimmerman and wife
to bid au revoir to La Colombe d’Or’s ballroom
the venerable room that has served as a stunning backdrop to some of Houston’s most lavish weddings and parties
Guests toasted to the Residences at La Colombe d’Or
which is a new partnership between Hines and the Zimmerman family
and Kevin Batchelor, unveiled plans for a stunning 34-story tower with 285 residences
Steve Zimmerman joked that the pairing of his family and Hines made him feel like "going to the prom with Charlize Theron." The residences will be part of a larger development
including a renovation of the current hotel rooms in the historic mansion
as well as plans for three new pocket parks
The Residences at La Colombe d’Or will connect to the neighboring hotel via an art gallery and outdoor plaza with fireplace
The new building will provide 17 additional luxury hotel rooms
Jorge Munoz of Munoz + Albin Architecture and Planning and Lauren Rottet of Rottet Studio shared the design of the project
which will combine the charm of old-world Houston with the grace and elegance of new contemporary design
Interior views will be focused out to lush greenery and the landscaped courtyard in between the new tower and existing mansion
Wine flowed throughout the evening while the crowd dined on supper bites — including lamb meatballs and hamachi tartar — along with the restaurant’s legendary Bananas Foster
and fabulous views from the residential tower
The Zimmerman family notes that the historic hotel and La Colombe d’Or restaurant will remain open for business and will undergo a $10 million facelift
With a nod to the prolific Hines’ project in the heart of the Museum District
displayed her paintings for sale with all proceeds to benefit Aishel House
Ongoing artwork displays will be integral to the gallery planned for the project.Who: Dan Zimmerman

you catch their enthusiasm for what a lifestyle in downtown Naperville will be when Charleston Row is finished
The six-unit row house project is set to be developed at the southeast corner of Aurora Avenue and Webster Street
Listed individually at just under $1.2 million to $1.4 million
4,150 square feet and 4,350 square feet respectively
Every unit features two rooftop terraces and its own private elevator
“We’re treating each unit as a custom single-family home,” said Erik
noting the project has passed though Plan and Zoning Commission and is looking to break ground as early as April this spring
Construction likely will take about a year
so moving-in day would be spring or summer 2018
Erik emphasizes “custom.” Interested buyers will be able to customize the floor plans and amenities if they make a commitment to purchase prior to the ground-breaking
With years of experience building new homes to replace teardowns
Adam noted the proximity of Charleston Row to downtown Naperville fulfills a recent trend
Buyers are looking to be conveniently located to shopping
They’re looking for homes that offer low maintenance without a large lawn to mow
They also want to be creative and help select special features that customize every corner of living space with good design and craftsmanship
The business partners added that interest in the new project is coming from empty nesters looking to downsize from large suburban estates
They’re also optimistic about the inquiries they’re receiving from young families interested in the good schools in District 203
And a down payment has been placed on another one
According to property owner Ruth Yackley of BBM Incorporated
the only other development of row houses is near the DuPage Children’s Museum
Living and working near the prized amenities in downtown Naperville creates a positive and healthy lifestyle
Charleston Row along Aurora Avenue will be steps from Naper Settlement
the new Water Street District with Hotel Indigo
North Central College and just over the Main Street Bridge to all the other attractions in downtown Naperville

Jane Laut could have collected nearly $300,000 in insurance and other benefits following the death of her husband
according to testimony from prosecution witnesses at her murder trial Thursday
One of those who testified in Ventura County Superior Court was Patrick Withers
a State Farm Insurance agent who sold Jane and Dave Laut a $100,000 life insurance policy
intentionally shot and killed her 52-year-old husband with a Ruger single-action
.22-caliber revolver as he walked to a side yard of their Oxnard home on Aug
Dave Laut was a shot putter who won a bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and was the athletic director at Hueneme High School at the time of his death
and charged with murder and a special enhancement of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm and causing great bodily injury
She faces 50 years to life in prison if convicted
Withers testified the Lauts secured the life insurance policy in 1997 when they were adopting a son
Withers said Jane was the primary beneficiary on the policy
He said he did not recall speaking to Jane about the policy after he found out on Sept
Senior Deputy District Attorney Rameen Minoui
showed Withers an email between him and another State Farm agent dated Sept
Withers indicated Jane planned to take the lump sum amount of the life insurance payout
Withers said the full amount normally would be paid out to the primary beneficiary
During cross-examination from defense attorney Ron Bamieh
Withers said beneficiaries could take a lump sum or a monthly payment
I always recommend the lump sum," Withers said
"I don't know if I spoke to her on the phone or in person
an insurance specialist with the Oxnard Union High School District
testified about business records related to Dave Laut
said she did not have specific information about his benefits
Van Someren did testify that based on Dave's age
the district's basic life insurance policy would be $39,500
plus an additional $52,000 for accidental death or dismemberment
She said the payout would normally go to the employee's spouse
a manager with the California State Teachers' Retirement System
testified Dave had three CalSTRS accounts that would pay a net sum of $103,640
That included a one-time death benefit of $24,652 that would be paid in full to the beneficiary
Walton said CalSTRS obtained paperwork from Jane but did not get any instruction from her on whether she wanted a lump sum or monthly payments
Walton said she did notify CalSTRS that she was a "prime suspect" in her husband's homicide
The payments were then stopped in October 2009
a forensic scientist from the county sheriff's crime laboratory
Wicks said he tested swabs taken from the Ruger revolver
Wicks analyzed DNA collected from various parts of the weapon
Wicks said there was not enough DNA extracted from the grip of the gun to get results
Asked by Minoui if it would be possible to remove DNA by "wiping an area down," Wicks said yes
Asked by Bamieh if it would be possible to selectively wipe off DNA from a surface
but you don't have the ability to selectively remove one person's DNA vs
The defense contends Jane Laut killed her husband in self-defense
after years of abuse and a struggle over the gun that night
Wicks testified he found Dave Laut's DNA on the muzzle and inside the barrel
Asked by Minoui what happens when a gun is fired at a close range of a half-inch to 2 inches
"There are times when blood and/or genetic material could be ejected back toward the gun
and that material can be either deposited on the surface of the gun or ..
inside the barrel of the gun as well," Wicks said
The husband and wife team who created London’s Bike Shed – Vikki and Anthony ‘Dutch’ van Someren – have been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List
The pair have been awarded the British Empire Medal for their work in the Covid-19 response effort
After Vikki put out an appeal for a friend in need
the couple were astounded by the incredible reaction from the motorcycling community and quickly set up the Bike Shed Community Response initiative
joined the group in May to help deliver PPE equipment
nearly 2000 riders had signed up to the project and had delivered PPE equipment
test kits and Oximiser Pulse Readers across the UK
And the group’s work is still ongoing with a recent partnership with Rubicon UK
who are leading Operation React which ensures that the most vulnerable members of society are getting the testing
Dutch van Someren said: “Our volunteers are an amazing cross-section of the biking community and are testament to the power of people and the good character of people who ride motorcycles
“Sadly our work continues as the crisis is not over and the vulnerable in particular need our help as much as ever.”

Vikki van Someren is married to Anthony ‘Dutch’ van Someren, the founder of the hugely successful Bike Shed Motorcycle Club (BSMC) in 2011
The Bike Shed has not only run annual custom motorcycle shows in London and Paris
it has also branched out and set-up a 12,000 square foot venue in Shoreditch
that features a 100 seat café and restaurant
As well as this venue hosting regular events
Bike Shed’s Facebook page currently has over 650,000 followers
100,000 follow it on Instagram and BSMC is a major player in the custom bike scene with manufacturers such as Triumph
Yamaha and Harley-Davidson keen to be associated with it
And it’s fair to say that without the driving force of Vikki behind it
much of this success simply wouldn’t have happened
VS: “I am listed as a co-founder of The Bike Shed and Events Director
When Dutch started it as a blog many years ago I supported him and let him spend hours writing stories and editing pictures of bikes rather than entertaining his wife
Nowadays I execute his vision for the events that we put on
I never really get involved with the website side of things
I just take Dutch’s vision for events and make it happen.”
VS: “I have a media and events background and so I use this to co-ordinate all our global events and also everything at the Shoreditch venue
Q: What drives your passion for custom bikes
VS: “I’ve been riding bikes since I was five years old and was brought up with Royal Enfield
Matchless and BSAs in the garden waiting to be fixed
My mother’s partner was a big biker and I’ve always had a keen interest in bikes
a beautiful Ducati SportClassic in cream and a Honda Dominator that has been customised to a flat tracker style that is my daily commuter
It’s very loud and causes havoc on the streets!”
VS: “I have done a basic bike mechanic’s course
I just don’t have the time to fettle bikes myself
but I have very strong ideas and generally think I know it all so I stand over someone and direct proceedings
When I have time I will build my own bike – but I think retirement will have to come first as I’m so busy at the moment!”
Q: What would you say to another woman who might be thinking about getting into the custom bike movement
go for it!’ But I’d say that to a man or woman who wanted to get into the scene
it’s the freedom and enjoyment of riding a bike that matters
I often speak to people who come here about getting into bikes and I always encourage them to try two-wheels.”
Q: What would you recommend as a good first bike
VS: “I’d say don’t go too big as a first bike
get something you are comfortable with to build up your confidence
If you want something customised then a Yamaha SR250 or Down and Out are doing cool bikes
it doesn’t matter what you ride as long as you are comfortable.”
gloves and boots with a leather jacket if I’m just going home
I never ride without a jacket; my skin is precious to me
I’ll properly suit up if I’m going for a long ride – you need to wear the right gear
In the past I’ve struggled with women’s bike gear as it wasn’t to my style – I don’t like pink stripes – but this is changing and there is now some really cool kit out there
I want functionality but also to look good.”
Q: Does it annoy you when you see kit manufacturers making ‘girly’ riding kit with pink colours
I’m just ‘a rider.’ I don’t distinguish between male and female
I just want good looking kit that is functional and safe.”
Q: Is the custom scene helping to encourage more women to ride bikes as it has quite a few strong women figures like yourself
VS: “The custom scene is a little less cliquey than other scenes
It can be just as daunting for a man turning up at a bike venue as a woman
The custom scene is very open to like minded
I think women are also feeling more confident in themselves lately
It’s all about creating an open and welcoming environment for all.”
I take influences from lots of different people
I have my favourite racers – Valentino Rossi for one – but I think people are people and I like different elements of people for different reasons.”
Q: What advice can you share with women thinking of running or being involved in a business such as The Bike Shed or within the motorcycle world
don’t think ‘I’m a woman I need to act differently’
Bring your gifts because as a woman you have a different set of skills to a man
Q: Do you have a mantra or philosophy on how to live your life
I’d say ‘treat people how you would like to be treated.’”
VS: “The stereotypical vision of women in the motorcycle scene annoys me
creatures but I want to move away from the stereotypical scene of a beautiful women draped over a bike in order to sell it
It’s all about who you are as an individual.”
the motorcycle world may on the outside appear to be a male dominated industry
success doesn’t depend on what sex you are
more if you have the drive and determination to get the job done
not only in her passion for The Bike Shed’s success
So if you are inspired to take up two wheels by Vikki’s story, what’s stopping you? There are hundreds of motorcycle training centers located throughout the UK and taking to two wheels is much easier and costs far less than you would expect. If you are interested, check out the UK motorcycle industry’s Get On website which has loads of information aimed at those looking at taking their first steps into the motorcycle world
Finally, and on a slightly less sexy, but practical – not to mention legally important – note, if you are looking to buy a bespoke bike or customise your own machine, you’ll need to think about the security and insurance implications. Specialist providers can usually offer you a bespoke policy to suit your bike’s modifications
