Five people were injured in a serious collision between a van and a car in Mussel, a village in the Groningen province, on Wednesday morning. The accident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the N366, also known as A.G. Wildervanckweg, left three individuals seriously injured, RTL reported.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the crash
with multiple fire teams dispatched from Ter-Apel

All five individuals involved in the accident were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment
Local authorities have not released the identities of those involved
The exact cause of the collision remains unclear
and authorities are investigating the incident
"...with the win comes the knowledge that I will have to work twice as hard..."
It was a weekend to remember for Great Britain’s Dimitri Coutya at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) World Cup in Stadskanaal
The 19-year-old defeated France’s Maxime Valet in the men’s foil category B final to win Britain’s first ever senior wheelchair fencing gold with the foil
The win was also enough to propel Coutya to the top of foil event world rankings for the first time
The celebrations continued for Coutya with gold in the men’s epee category B contest
He beat Brazil’s London 2012 Paralympic champion Jovane Guissone 15-9 in the final to cap an incredible tournament
"Lots of hard work from a very large team has paid off,” said Coutya
“I've been so close to winning foil gold for a long time now and I'm thrilled to have achieved it
“In both foil and epee I faced all my top opponents and managed to come out victorious
But with the win comes the knowledge that I will have to work twice as hard to replicate this success and maintain my skills so I will not become complacent."
The British team had more to cheer as Rio 2016 runner-up Piers Gilliver added to their gold medal haul with a victory against Poland’s Norbert Calka in the final of the men’s epee category A final
Coutya’s two-gold tally was matched by Hungary’s two-time Rio 2016 silver medallist Richard Osvath
who topped the podium in both the men’s foil and sabre category A competitions
The feat was then also repeated by Thailand’s Sayunsee Jana
Jana was a cut above her rivals as she cruised to the women’s category B epee and sabre titles
Hong Kong’s five-time Paralympic champion Yu Chui Yee came within a point of being a fourth fencer to leave Stadskanaal with two individual titles
In a nail-biting women’s epee category A final
Yu landed the crucial blow to beat Ukraine’s Yevheniia Breus 15-14
Yu was then on the losing side of a tense foil category A final against Hungary’s No
This time it was Krajnyak who struck when it mattered most for the 15-14 win
An inspired Krajnyak then led the Hungarian women’s team to victory over Poland in the final of the women’s team contest
In the men’s team epee event it was the Italians who were victorious
Despite competing in the junior competition prior to the senior World Cup
18-year-old Emanuele Lambertini showed no sign of fatigue
landing the final point of the tournament to secure a 45-44 win over Poland

social geography and planning students investigated support for the asylum seekers’ center (azc) in the Groningen village of Musselkanaal
They advised the village to promote as much contact as possible between asylum seekers and the Musselkanalers
“God made everyone equal,” residents argue
About 90 students of Social Geography & Planning conducted a fieldwork study during the second week of January in the village of Musselkanaal in the Groningen municipality of Stadskanaal on support for the asylum seekers’ center there
they presented their research results to stakeholders of the Stadskanaal municipality
including the mayor and the asylum center manager
Their main joint conclusion: The more contact with asylum seekers residents have
the more positive they are. Dispersion lawDivided into 15 groups
the third-year students conducted over 500 surveys of 67 Musselkanalers
the Musselkanaal asylum center opened its doors to more than 400 asylum seekers
The intention of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) is for the center to remain open until at least 2025
not included in the students’ surveys
an as yet undetermined number of asylum seekers might eventually be housed in other municipalities that currently do not receive enough asylum seekers
“No second Ter Apel with tents”Musselkanaal is a stone’s throw from Ter Apel
where there is an asylum seekers’ center for another 2,000 asylum seekers
The latter center has been in the news recently both because of insufficient facilities for too many residents and violent incidents in the center
The residents of Musselkanaal therefore indicated above all that they did not want to become “a second Ter Apel with tents.” Both the qualitative and quantitative surveys also showed that residents of Musselkanaal who had heard stories about Ter Apel second or third-hand thought significantly more negatively towards an asylum seekers’ center
Negative posts in certain Facebook groups from other Musselkanaal residents who are skeptical of certain media and tell mostly negative stories about asylum seekers in the area contributed to the development of a negative opinion towards the asylum seekers’ center. Neighborhood DayThis opinion seemed to grow stronger when respondents lived farther away from the asylum seekers’ center and thus only had “superficial” contact with its residents
But playing soccer together with the asylum seekers
or having a neighborhood day with refugees made the villagers think more positively about the presence of an asylum seekers’ center
The role of the church also proved important in the villagers’ perceptions
as they regularly mingled there with asylum seekers: Faith appeared to connect
“God created everyone equal.” Most Musselkanalers thus seemed proud of their church but were equally proud of their congregation
That admiration stemmed in part from the rapid acceptance of Ukrainian refugees
“The Netherlands sends its overflow to Groningen
but the congregation has handled it well.”
The municipality was not entirely pleased with the results
because the support base was smaller than individuals involved in the center and the municipality had expected
The municipality was shocked by some racist responses from villagers
such as one respondent who said “I still get scared when I see a black person on the street at night” and from a resident who called Islam “a source of evil.”
Soccer tournamentThe municipality had also hoped that the students would do more research on proposals for contact between Musselkanalers and asylum seekers
was that almost all Musselkanalers made a distinction between “fortune seekers” (those who come from a safe country) and real refugees (war refugees)
The latter group was overwhelmingly welcomed
“Everyone who lives in Musselkanaal is a Musselkanaler.”

Italian wheelchair fencer Emanuele Lambertini has been voted Allianz Athlete of the Month - October 2016
Emanuele Lambertini will not get much rest when he takes on both the junior and senior events at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) wheelchair fencing World Cup events in Stadskanaal
The 18-year-old dismissed any concern on whether that would take a toll on his body
“I am excited at the thought of five competitions,” Lambertini explained
which runs from Friday to Sunday (12–14 May)
the Italian will also compete in the Under-23 World Cup
He wants to challenge himself at both levels
“So in the junior events I’ll fence as hard as in the senior World Cup
Lambertini is looking forward to returning to the piste following a big medal haul at the same venue last October
At the 2016 U17 and U23 World Championships
Lambertini took the U17 epee and foil titles
This time he will fence for individual foil and epee gold in both events
He will also compete for Italy in the senior team event
The quick-fire run of competitions will give Lambertini an opportunity to test the range skills he has been training for
“At the moment I’m improving different things at the same time,” Lambertini explained
my strength and some particular fencing actions to have all aspects well trained all the time.”
Lambertini named Hungarian fencer Richard Osvath as one of his toughest challenges
While another return from the Netherlands with multiple medals is the goal for the days ahead
who won foil category A silver at Rio 2016 is Lambertini’s long-term goal
He finished in eighth place in the foil category A competition on his Paralympic debut in Rio and has mixed feelings about the experience
“The emotions when I think back to Rio vary from sadness for the missed medal to happiness for the chance I had to be there; from the thrill I experienced during the competition to the hope for the upcoming years,” he said
the Paralympic Games have been the best experience I’ve ever had

Yu Chui Yee added another two World Cup golds to her glittering wheelchair fencing career
Hong Kong’s seven-time Paralympic champion Yu Chui Yee won both the women’s epee and foil category A events at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) wheelchair fencing World Cup
which concluded on Monday (3 July) in Warsaw
The double victory follows Yu’s epee gold at the last World Cup event in Stadskanaal
Yu had spoken of her confidence before the event and wasted no time in turning her winning mentality into results
beating Poland’s European champion Marta Fidrych 15-11 to take the epee title in the opening day
Securing gold in the foil competition proved a tougher test
with Yu edging Chinese newcomer Gu Haiyan 15-14 in a tight final
as she took gold in the women’s category A sabre contest the following day
The 17-year-old proved too strong for Ukraine’s Nataliia Morkvych in the final
Gu also starred as China won the women’s team sabre event in Warsaw
cementing her reputation rising star for the Chinese squad
There was more gold for China in the men’s foil events
In the category A contest Zhong Sai Chun beat countryman Sun Gang by a single point to take the title
In the equivalent category B final it was Feng Yanke who won gold for China
There was no surprise in the women’s category B foil competition as Italy’s world No
Vio beat China’s Zhou Jingjing 15-12 in the final
The win marks a fifth title in succession for Vio
a run that began at the Rio 2016 Paralympics
Defeat in the final of last year’s Warsaw World Cup ended Vio’s streak of 11 consecutive wins
Great Britain’s Piers Gilliver was another favourite to continue a winning run in Poland
Victory in Poland sealed a third men’s epee category A title in a row for Gilliver following gold medals at the World Cups in Eger
Poland’s Adrian Castro gave the Warsaw crowd plenty to cheer about as he took gold in the men’s sabre category B event
Castro looked strong as he overcame Greece’s Panagiotus Triantafyllou 15-4 in the gold medal match
The World Cup in Warsaw was the last major competition before November’s wheelchair fencing World Championships in Rome, Italy. Complete results are available online
"Being top in the world comes with the added pressure of knowing that everybody is gunning for you."
Dimitri Coutya’s 2017 season performances show just how determined he is to put away the disappointment of leaving Rio 2016 without a medal
The British wheelchair fencer has made the podium in his past three foil category B events
including gold at the World Cup in Stadskanaal
The results have earned the 19-year-old not just the respect of his rivals
“Becoming world No.1 has always been one of my goals in fencing
and it’s hard to believe that I hold that spot now,” Coutya said
“It took years of hard work and I'm absolutely delighted
Being top in the world comes with the added pressure of knowing that everybody is gunning for you
I know plenty of capable and worthy opponents who will be looking to take that title from me
“I will be training harder to ensure I'm in the best possible position to defend my title over the coming competitions.”
taking gold in the event to seal a double in Stadskanaal and losing only in the final of the epee competition at the World Cup in Warsaw
“Epee does not come as naturally to me as foil does,” Coutya admitted
“I find that the best way to cope with this is to take aspects of my foil fencing into epee
adopting an unorthodox style and using it to my advantage.”
Coutya does not need to look far for an epee sparring partner
Great Britain teammate and close friend Piers Gilliver is the men’s epee event category A world No.1
“The fact that we are friends allow us to propel each other and challenge each other in ways that others may struggle to do
and ultimately helps to improve both our performances,” Coutya said
“It is also great to have someone around that I can relax with when we are not competing.”
Coutya’s focus for the remainder of the year is now the World Championships
where he hopes to underline his status as the best in the world
I am in the best possible position for Rome
which is the most important competition of the year
At the last World Championships two years ago I won silver with the foil
I am going to be looking to at the very least to defend that medal
It is a big goal and will require a lot of hard work
but I feel that I should aim as high as possible
I have a brilliant team behind me and I know they will do all they can to help me get there.”
The IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport Federation) World Championships takes place 7–12 November in Rome
is the world-record holder in the 100m T54 sprint
Leo Pekka Tahti recalls a particular national event back home in Finland when the front of his wheelchair just fell off mid-race
The Finnish 100m T54 world-record holder and three-time Paralympic champion in the event remembers it like it was yesterday
“It just crushed in the front part,” Tahti said
“It just cut off 20m before the finish line in a competition.”
which was a hundredth of a second better than his gold-medal winning race at the IPC Athletics European Championships on Monday (25 June) in Stadskanaal
But with his win this week came a European title
Tahti beat the Netherlands’ Kenny van Weeghel and Germany’s Marc Schuh for the title in an event he deemed will be the second biggest competition of the year for him other than the London 2012 Paralympic Games
which he has already been selected to compete in
has been on the wheelchair racing circuit for 13 years now
but claims there are still several years left in his competitive career and that all he has to do every time he hits the track is propel himself as fast as humanely possible for the first 30-40m
you’ve probably lost a medal by then,” he said
so other athletes may want to take his advice
Tahti holds the world-record time of 13.76 in the 100m T54
which he set at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games en route to winning gold
in Beijing the stadium was a fantastic stadium,” Tahti said
I’m not sure the stadium will be full in London
Tahti was the only wheelchair racer represented from Finland
Finland plans to send as many as four wheelchair racers to compete on the big international stage
The Championships in Stadskannal are not yet over for Tahti
as he will compete again on Tuesday in the 400m T54 race – an event he is not quite as strong in but believes there is still room for improvement
and he will face the same top opponents as in the 100m in van Weeghel and Schuh
Just 0.09 seconds seperated the top four finishers in the men's 100m at the 2011 IPC Atheltics World Championships
“We are now 15 months away from the start of the Championships and I was impressed with the level of planning and detail that the Local Organizing Committee has put in so far
The venue is great and located in a beautiful park whilst the city is totally stunning
Our athletes cannot fail to be impressed."
The organizers of the 2013 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships in Lyon
France have promised competing athletes that they can expect optimal sporting conditions when they arrive in the city in July next year
France’s second city will stage the Championship between 19-28 July 2013 and after two days of meetings with IPC representatives in the city
Vice President of the Local Organizing Committee
said he is confident Lyon will stage one of the best World Championships ever for para-athletes
“We are determined to make these the most welcoming World Championships ever for athletes and staff,” said Allard
“We want to create the best sporting conditions so that athletes can perform to the best of their ability and show the public the value of Paralympic sport
“This will be the first international sporting event to be held at the Stadium of Parilly and we hope to change perceptions in French society of what can be achieved by a person with an impairment.”
During the two days of meetings the IPC was given a tour of the Stadium of Parilly
the venue for the Championships which is located in 178 hectares of parkland to the south east of the city in the Rhones-Alpes region
organizers plan to build temporary stands at the venue to increase capacity for spectators and are looking at hosting the marathon on a 7km loop road within the surroundings of Parc Parilly
The IPC delegation was also given a tour of the city
and shown a number of hotels where it is proposed teams will be accommodated during the Championships
said: “We are now 15 months away from the start of the Championships and I was impressed with the level of planning and detail that the Local Organizing Committee has put in so far
“The venue is great and located in a beautiful park whilst the city is totally stunning
the key for the Organizing Committee is to make the planning become a reality
If they do that then the athletes coming here can expect an excellent World Championships.”
The IPC and Championship organizers also discussed the look and feel of the event
Around 1,300 athletes from 90 countries are expected to take part in the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships which will be the first major gathering of track and field athletes after London 2012

they need to think how to get motivation after
Slovenia’s world-record holder in the Discus F51
the Netherlands on Friday (22 June) nerveless and ready to go
The 44-year-old is ready to show the rest of his continent why he is No

He used to enjoy lifting weights at the gym – and could lift up to 300kg – but he transitioned to Athletics followed his accident
they need to think how to get motivation after,” Flere said
Flere competes in the field class for athletes with the lowest functional ability and trains every day aside from Sundays
he is allowed to use a suitable glue substance on his hands to obtain a better grip on the disc
I want to throw and it doesn’t release,” Flere chuckled

I want to get better than my personal bests.”
The Netherlands’ Annette Roozen is fighting for one of five women’s slots available on the Dutch Athletics team that will compete at the London 2012 Paralympic Games

In her first event at the Championships on Tuesday (26 June)
Roozen finished second in the 100m T42 sprint with a time of 16.67
who clocked a new world record time of 15.89
“I was very nervous and I didn’t sleep,” Roozen said
The time in Stadskanaal puts her fifth in the 2012 IPC Athletics world rankings in the women’s T42 class
Both Caironi and Australia’s defending world champion Kelly Cartwright rank ahead of her
Although Roozen’s time in the sprint is good enough for qualification
there are only a select number of places on the Dutch squad
Roozen now has to wait until the team is named on 17 July to see if she will be headed to London this summer
Photos of a house with Nazi symbols appeared on Funda last week
The real estate agency responsible says a series of human errors led up to the unfortunate posting
texts and flags –– which could all be viewed in the photos published on the platform
a gold eagle with a swastika hung in the dining room
photos depicted a flag with a swastika above the nightstand and words from a concentration camp above the doorframe
these photos may have been visible on the internet," the house's real estate broker said
after the photos disappeared from Funda and the broker's website
several errors led to the publishing of the photos
the real estate agency's owner Herman Boekelo told RTL
the photographer came earlier than expected to begin taking photos of the property
an employee of the real estate agency noticed the swastikas and other Nazi imagery
and put all the photos that couldn't be shown into a folder
"It is a very annoying combination of circumstances," Boekelo told RTL
"I was completely shocked when I received an app about it from a customer
The house is no longer for sale via the real estate agency
"We want to distance ourselves from it completely."
The northern Netherlands have just received three new solar parks totalling 152 megawatts solar panels
a combination of mono- and bifacial modules is used
Chint Solar Nederlands has announced the successful completion of 3 solar parks in Drenthe and Groningen
152 MW of solar panels have been installed
Zonnepark Stadskanaal has a capacity of 101 MW
Zonnepark Buinerveen of 45 MW and Zonnepark Ommelanderwijk of 5.7 MW
The solar parks were connected to the grid of operators Enexis and TenneT
The solar parks were initiated by PowerField and have been further developed and realized by Chint Solar
Chint Solar also developed and constructed the grid connection infrastructure
Chint Solar acted as the leading EPC contractor
coordinated various subcontractors and took responsibility for network integration and meeting all local and legal requirements
The construction of Zonnepark Stadskanaal started in February 2020
Chint Solar installed 245,000 solar panels on 83 hectares of land at the Van Boekerenweg
Chint Solar connected this solar park directly to the high voltage electrical substation of TenneT located in Meeden
To this purpose a 16 kilometer 110 kv cable route was built between the solar park and the point of connection in Meeden
The construction works for Zonnepark Buinerveen started in May 2020
About 110,000 solar panels have been installed on 40 hectares of land
Zonnepark Buinerveen is connected to Zonnepark Stadskanaal via a 13 kilometer private medium voltage 33 kv cable route
The combined grid connection for the solar parks in Stadskanaal and Buinerveen is connected to the high-voltage grid
This is a first interconnection of two solar parks for the Netherlands
A thorough and long preparation was required
The technology and selection of components of Zonnepark Buinerveen was characterized by the high restrictions on the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) directive applied to this geographical location
The EMC directive imposes limits to the electromagnetic emissions of equipment
In order to allow for the realization of the solar park
specific agreements had to be made with Astron (the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy) that would guarantee the construction and operation of the solar park within the required norms
Chint Solar has therefore developed a project-specific DC filter and taken additional measures to limit the overall EMC emissions and stay within the imposed limits
The complex and customized EMC emission control solution was first tested in an external laboratory and subsequently on site

‘The complexity of these projects makes them unique for Chint Solar
Head of Project Management at Chint Solar Europe
‘Meeting the 110 kV Requirements for Generators (RfG) Grid Code
reaching the agreed EMC limits and implementing the projects within the fixed time limit during the global COVID-19 pandemic makes these solar parks great references
We thank all partners involved for their remarkable efforts in advancing and realizing the projects.’
The construction of Zonnepark Ommelanderwijk
The former industrial estate was unusable for farming because of pre-existing pollution
and significant land remediation measures had to be taken prior to the construction of the solar park
This will allow Chint Solar to test and prove the benefits of bifacial modules over monofacial in real-life applications
solar energy is a perfect solution to use otherwise unusable land for valuable and sustainable energy generation’
Head of Business for Chint Solar Nederland
‘This type of land conversion can become a role model for other unusable locations
We want to copy this concept to other sites in the Netherlands.’
Chint Solar will continue to be involved in all 3 solar parks
Zonnepark Services Nederland – a joint venture of Chint Solar and Goldbeck Solar – was founded in October 2020
It will provide the Operation & Maintenance (O&M) services for the solar parks
With 440 MW of O&M contracts for solar parks in its portfolio
it is one of the largest PV service companies in the Netherlands
‘After connecting the 103 MW Zonnepark Midden Groningen in 2019
these 3 new solar parks are real icon projects’
the solar parks will provide about 50,000 households in the Netherlands with sustainable electricity and help the regions achieve their local energy targets
We would like to thank all public stakeholders
contractors and consultants for their strong cooperation and participation in making the solar parks a reality.’ (mfo)

Photo: Jilmer Postma ANPThe Groningen town of Stadskanaal has agreed to provide emergency accommodation in tents for asylum seekers to relieve pressure on the Ter Apel reception centre
will provide beds for some 200 people and can probably be used from Thursday
The local council said it was stepping in to help out because of the “very worrying” situation in a the Ter Apel reception centre where all new refugees are processed
“Tents are far from ideal at this time of year,” council official Ingrid Sterenborg said
“But the situation in Ter Apel is desperate
And it is better to sleep in a heated tent than on the ground.”
Asylum seekers will be taken by bus to the tents
where they will be given an evening meal and can spend the night
The next day they will be returned to Ter Apel to wait to be seen by the immigration service IND
the Red Cross was drafted in to provide emergency provisions for dozens of refugees who had been sleeping on the floor of waiting rooms in the centre
The refugee settlement agency COA said last month it would contact 45 municipalities that are failing to meet their obligations to provide shelter under a plan agreed between local mayors and provinces earlier in the month
That plan was drawn up to try to relieve pressure at Ter Apel where 2,500 people are currently staying in a facility that has a maximum capacity of 2,000
The justice ministry has warned that the number of refugees with a permit to stay who are living in asylum seeker accommodation – which is intended for those whose claims are still being processed – could reach 21,000 by 2025 unless councils find alternatives
MPs voted in favour of legislation that will force all 342 Dutch local authorities to accept their fair share of refugees
the ruling VVD and far right parties all voted against the legislation
whose support is crucial to get the measure passed in the senate
Research published by RTL Nieuws a year ago showed that more than half of Dutch local councils have not provided any housing for refugees in the past 10 years
Richer council areas and Bible belt towns and villages are far less likely to have housed a refugee centre
The research shows that nearly all of the 25 poorest local authorities in the country have provided temporary housing for refugees at some point since 2012
while just three of the richest 25 have done so

About 300 people spent Saturday night sleeping outside the application center in Ter Apel
despite accelerated government efforts to house asylum seekers amid warnings about hygiene and health at the application center
Eighty of those 450 were able to enter the application center during the day. Seventy others were taken to Vlissingen by bus at the end of the afternoon. Eighty-five asylum seekers, mainly "vulnerable" people, are being cared for in Stadskanaal, a COA spokesperson said.
The municipality of Doetinchem will open a crisis emergency shelter for refugees from Ter Apel on Sunday. It will house the 150 asylum seekers who were accommodated in sports halls in Apeldoorn on Thursday evening. In total, the emergency shelter will offer space to 225 refugees who can stay until the end of the year.
The emergency shelter in Doetinchem will also offer space for families who are currently staying in Heeten in Overijssel. The emergency shelter in Heeten is closed. The asylum seekers are housed in Doetinchem in residential units on a site next to the police station. Each unit can accommodate four to five people.
A pavilion for central facilities will also be placed on the site such as first aid and catering. The site is also close to shops in the Gelderland town. Residents are not allowed to leave the location between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., according to the municipality. Local residents have been informed by the municipality in the past week.

Rotterdam and The Hague are well down in the ranking
mainly because of high levels of both air and noise pollution
Almere and Amersfoort complete the top 5 in a list of 20
The aim of the ranking is not to create a hierarchy of elite cities
but to highlight areas where cities can optimise their physical environment to the benefit of their citizens
Arcadis climate group director Marjan den Barber said
The index was already being compiled before coronavirus hit
but the pandemic itself has highlighted the need for healthy cities
‘While much remains to be researched
it appears that basic human health plays a major role in susceptibility to coronavirus,’ she said
‘A well thought-out city contributes to having a healthy population.’
The biggest Dutch cities are also at the bottom of a new list of prosperous places to live in the Netherlands drawn up by national statistics agency CBS
While the cities are wealthier in terms of money
they are often dirtier and less safe and their residents are generally more unhealthy than country dwellers
