It can be hard for a hiring manager to see an overqualified candidate as ambitious
[Photo: Rawpixel/Unsplash]
BY Lisa Evans
Remember back when you were a new grad and applying for every job mentioning your degree
only to be told you didn’t have enough experience
you’ve got years of experience under your belt and the skill set and experience to get any of those jobs you applied for years ago
but you’re faced with one critical problem
Hiring managers tend to overlook candidates with too much experience
Often they’re worried that the applicant will jump ship as soon as something comes along that they’re better suited for
or that they’ll expect a salary that’s greater than their budget
“We tend to think of lower-level jobs as a way to pay our dues in order to advance,” says Kim Stiens, hiring consultant and founder and CEO of career advice site Ranavain
When reviewing resumes of individuals who seem to have already put in those dues
employers may be skeptical of why they want to take a step back
They worry the candidate won’t be engaged enough in the position
“Employers want to hire the best candidate
that actually means hiring someone for whom the position is a stretch; they’re perhaps a bit underqualified
but hungry and eager to do the work.” says Stiens
It might be hard to see an overqualified candidate as ambitious
While there are many good arguments around not hiring someone too qualified for the position
that doesn’t mean you can’t still land that job
Are you looking for greater work-life balance or a less stressful and less time-consuming job than your existing role
Are you entering a new industry and feel the need to start in an entry-level position
Or are you simply looking to move away from your current company
Understanding your own motives is the first step to landing the gig
Hiring managers want to know that the job is a good fit for you
The last thing you want them thinking is that it doesn’t make sense why you are applying
Tell the hiring manager what aspects of the job are appealing to you and show how the position fits into your career goals
Perhaps you’ve been performing a similar role in nonprofits for a few years
and you want to apply to a big company doing something similar or at a lower level
Sometimes individuals are willing to accept a lower-level job because it’s at their dream company
Employers are more likely to want to take a chance on you if they believe that you are truly passionate about the company and are willing to do any position
because you truly want to work there in whatever capacity
even if it’s a lower position than you’re used to
Show the employer that you understand their pain points and outline what you can bring to the organization to help solve their problem
Do your research on the company before applying
Employers know getting someone with more experience means the learning curve will be shorter
and that someone with more experience at a lower price can be good for them
but that doesn’t mean you still don’t have to convince them based on what you can do for them
“You have to be able to build a constructive case for your hire,” says Stiens
“The hiring manager has to believe that you’re applying for their job because you think you’ll thrive in it
no matter how great a bargain you might be.”
you may feel that you’re overqualified for an entry-level position because you have 10 years of unrelated experience
“A company might prefer to hire someone with 1.5 years of exactly applicable experience over someone with 10 years of vaguely applicable experience,” says Stiens
be explicit in how your skills are transferrable to the new field
“The hiring manager isn’t going to hunt down those details and make the case for you,” says Stiens
Whether applying for a position you’re overqualified or underqualified for
demonstrating to the prospective employer that you are the best choice will help you land the gig

Spartanburg County is increasing efforts to make the area as appealing as possible
Spartanburg County Parks Department crews are working to establish another trail and public access point to the Pacolet River across from the beach
said the work on that side of the river is tougher because of the landscape
“We’re just doing some minor improvements so we can open that side up for public access,” he said
Spartanburg County Council purchased the 40-acre site along the Pacolet River
Between $400,000 and $500,000 was planned to transform the area
and portions of the long-term work are still in progress
Jim Griffin was one of a handful of people sitting in the sandy area overlooking the river Friday afternoon
He said the beach gives local families a unique place to enjoy the outdoors
"The kids can almost walk right across it," he said
Stiens said work is ongoing to refurbish the parking lot at the site to add more spaces
A trail along the river is being constructed
and the river access point across from the beach is nearing completion
“The funding we have is more for improvements down toward the river,” he said
“Because that site has become more popular
we have no more property on the beach side
so we wanted to get some public access on both sides.”
The old concrete slab where the former Clifton Mill was located remains closed off
He said the beach has long been a favorite with residents
“That was a local swimming location long before the county ever got involved,” he said

The second teacher in our Feature a Teacher series is another dedicated professional whose impact has had profound effects on her students
This teacher wears multiple hats and offers her expertise
compassion and love of teaching both in the classroom and in a support role for other teachers
especially a student that has a few more obstacles to learning than some others
is what makes teaching a lifelong mission for Jackson Middle School teacher
“I wanted a teaching job where I could really get to know the kids and really see the impact that learning has for them
You can see aha moments when you work with fewer kids and it is very rewarding from a teaching standpoint to watch a student who has struggled with a concept to suddenly and finally ‘get it’,” Stien said
Stien’s family: Rachel’s mother and father
both live in Jackson Township and help take care of Rachel’s dog Gracie
part Schnauzer and part Poodle,” Rachel said
“She is my dog but stays with my parents because I am working so much
I think my mom is trying to win her over to be her dog.”
School name and location: Jackson Local Schools
Teaching position: Rachel has been teaching for 20 years
She is an intervention specialist and the head of the intervention department
She also teaches seventh grade language arts in special education and co-teaches language arts in a general education classrooms for middle school students
Her special education students go into the general classroom for learning
Rachel thought she always wanted to teach the lower grades
At the time she applied with Jackson Local Schools
the only position open was in the middle school and she took the job
She continued to believe that she would eventually move to elementary until after her first year at the middle school
She realized that she absolutely loved teaching the middle grades
It is a strange age where the kids are not yet adults and not little kids
They are trying to find their place in the world
It’s fascinating to watch the process of coming out from the child label and going into the young adult age that takes place over nine months
They still have a good sense of humor at this age and they are still open to learning
sometimes they don’t admit they like learning but they do
I have students that still get excited to see a sticker on their paper
The first nine weeks is spent establishing a relationship and getting to know them and they are getting to know you
Credentials: Undergrad degree from Malone University in general education and special education teaching grades one through eight in a regular classroom or kindergarten to twelfth grades in special education
Rachel also has a master’s degree from Ashland University in curriculum and instruction
Favorite time of the year: Summer--because of the heat
A Favorite quote: “Finish each day and be done with it
Favorite food or restaurant: Italian foods
Song: Claire de Lune by Debussy “I like this music because I can just let my mind go blank and not think about anything else except how pretty the song is.”
Movie: The Shawshank Redemption “It’s a movie that ends with happiness prevailing.”
Favorite Book: Anne of Green Gables by L.M
Montgomery “I was very shy and quiet when I was younger and because of that
Favorite Animal: “Beagles are really my favorite animal
Rachel visited China two summers ago with 20 other teachers
Convince Luis Lacourt (middle school guidance counselor) that she is superior
Take your breath away moment: “When I saw the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses in China
depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor of China)
buried underground to protect him after he died.”
Aha moment that changed her life: “Being accepted into a college
When I was in high school I never thought I would go to college because I didn’t think I had enough money or was smart enough
Since I was always playing school with my stuffed animals when I was younger
I thought teaching would be my career choice and decided to go to college for a degree
I can still remember getting the phone call that I had been accepted
Special moment in teaching career: “In my fourth year of teaching
we had our first autistic student in the middle school
I had this student for the next three consecutive years and it was so rewarding watching him go from hiding under his desk and staying in his own fantasy world in the first year to making eye contact with people and saying hello and good-bye
I’ll never forget the first time he said thank you
The student was so disconnected from reality he couldn’t recognize how much people worked with him
It can take a couple of years to see a change in the kids and to see how much progress they make from day one in the middle school to the day they start preparing to go into the high school
It is always so amazing to see what these kids can do.”
Typical work day: Most of the special students either have a learning disability
a health impairment such as ADHD or epilepsy or cognitive disabilities with a lower than average IQ
There is also a growing population of autistic students
Most of the special education students will take the Ohio Achievement Test making the job of the intervention specialist to help general education teachers learn to change instruction so that it meets the needs of the students while still focusing on the grade level standards
All of which makes every day different for Rachel
As the department head of the special education department
organizes testing groups for special education teachers and students
puts out a lot of fires and coordinates many things behind the scenes to make sure the day runs smoothly for those in her department
she goes into the general education teachers’ classrooms to co-teach language arts.
