Remco Dijkstra, the alderman of Tiel, has sent an urgent letter to the Dutch national government, calling for stricter regulations on temporary employment agencies. "Too many agencies are exploiting people and providing inadequate housing," Dijkstra said Of the approximately 100 homeless individuals in Tiel "Homeless migrant workers are wandering the streets going to coffee shops or drinking cheap beer Some even sleep in the floodplains of the Waal This is something we should not accept," Dijkstra added Recent changes to labor agreements for temporary workers have offered some improvements. For example, workers who are dismissed are legally allowed to stay in their housing for two weeks after losing their jobs. "Ideally, we would like to see migrant workers hired directly by employers, so they receive the same protections as Dutch workers," Patijn added. The non-profit organization Stichting Barka which assists Eastern European homeless people in Gelderland has been working overtime to address the growing issue and the number of people seeking help keeps growing," Ania Mikielewicz "It’s true that action must be taken against the bad temporary agencies. But we also need to provide better and more honest information about what people can expect when they come to the Netherlands. What we see is that people come with different expectations and quickly end up on the streets," Mikielewicz added Metrics details The conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems require detailed knowledge of the native plant compositions we map global forest tree composition and assess the impacts of historical forest cover loss and climate change on trees The global occupancy of 10,590 tree species reveals complex taxonomic and phylogenetic gradients determining a local signature of tree lineage assembly Species occupancy analyses indicate that historical forest loss has significantly restricted the potential suitable range of tree species in all forest biomes tropical moist and boreal forest biomes display the lowest level of range restriction and harbor extremely large ranged tree species albeit with a stark contrast in richness and composition Climate change simulations indicate that forest biomes are projected to differ in their response to climate change with the highest predicted species loss in tropical dry and Mediterranean ecoregions Our findings highlight the need for preserving the remaining large forest biomes while regenerating degraded forests in a way that provides resilience against climate change A global high-resolution mapping effort would offer a picture of the main gradients of taxonomic and phylogenetic composition in the forests from local to global scales estimating future suitable ranges with statistical models remains a scalable approach to gain insights into the effects of climate change and inform conservation and restoration efforts which was found to be sufficient to train models with good predictive performance and beyond the pure large-scale mapping effort we used the predicted distributions to perform three analyses investigating the global distribution of tree species we inferred global gradients of species composition and investigated the global variation of taxonomic and phylogenetic forest composition by combining potential species occupancy with tree cover data we computed the reduction in species ranges when constrained to current forest cover therefore assessing the impact of historical forest loss on species range reduction we investigated the extent of species turnover and shifts in latitude and elevation under projected climate change This study provides a comprehensive overview of the global forest composition the characterization of species’ range sizes and the resilience of tree biodiversity to climate change Thanks to large publicly available occurrence databases and our cloud-based implementation we are able to reach results of unprecedented scale for habitat suitability mapping both in terms of spatial coverage and resolution and in terms of the number of species allowing us to investigate the global composition of tree species at very high granularity in our subsequent analyses the lack of structured distributions and of fine-grained clusters in these ordinations point towards a near-unique biodiversity signature as any given site is associated with a unique set of tree species and lineages resulting from a combination of historical and ecological factors The relative decrease in range size reflects how species ranges are restricted by historical forest cover loss and we find a median range reduction of 22.0% across all considered species All biomes showed significantly lower realized ranges compared to potential ranges of species (p < 0.01 for t-test between unrestricted and restricted range sizes over all species and per biome) with median range reduction per biome varying between 11.4% and 67.2% The gray base map corresponds to all areas for which model predictors were available d Plot of species’ median latitude against range size constrained to forests Source data are provided as a Source Data file The median absolute latitude and median elevation shift among species and change in taxonomic and phylogenetic composition under climate change were computed for each forest ecoregion The boxplots show statistics for n = 239 ecoregions for Tropical Moist Broadleaf Forests n = 14 ecoregions for Tropical Coniferous Forests n = 55 ecoregions for Tropical Dry Broadleaf Forests n = 91 ecoregions for Temperate Broadleaf Forests n = 49 ecoregions for Temperate Conifer Forests and n = 61 ecoregions for Mediterranean Forests The center line of the boxplots shows the median the whiskers 1.5 times the interquartile range Changes are computed between predicted distributions with climate variables for 1981-2010 and climate projections for 2071-2100 under climate change scenario SSP 5.85 Changes in composition are computed as the Euclidean distance between scaled NMDS and evoPCA values computed at the ecoregion level many new species may find suitable habitats and few species may lose suitable habitats under future climate change This is coherent with our predictions of larger shifts in latitude or elevation allowing species to track climate change thanks to continuously available habitat and is estimated to have a strong effect on the phylogenetic composition of these ecoregions with generally much more geographically restricted species’ ranges were found to suffer the highest proportion of extirpated species with some ecoregions predicted to lose suitable habitat for over 50% of currently suitable species the turnover of species is estimated to affect taxonomic composition more strongly than the phylogenetic composition more modest changes in composition were found in tropical forest ecoregions than in temperate and boreal forest ecoregions realized tree species distribution is significantly narrower than its potential even when considering geographic range limits Considering predicted species distributions under future climate projections shows that different areas will be affected differently by climate change and stresses the importance of climate-smart conservation efforts that are adapted to the specific region the availability of global maps of environmental variables allowed us to make continent-wide predictions of species distributions While we selected variables that are of general ecological relevance across all biomes future work may consider more specific factors The cloud-based data integration and modeling approach demonstrate the potential of high-performance computing infrastructure to support the documentation of global biodiversity patterns at scales and resolutions unattained before global analyses such as those presented here Taxonomic composition showed more smooth gradients and was only weakly associated with environmental variables suggesting a strong effect of historical factors our analyses uncovered marked local gradients in species and lineage composition the global composition of tree species and the corresponding phylogenetic diversity may be even more strongly geographically structured when including rare species correlative models remain the most feasible option to predict the effects of climate change for a large number of species and at a global scale the bias of our results towards well-sampled species should be carefully considered The exclusion of species for which not enough occurrence records were available is likely to have led to an underestimation of the number of species with small ranges in particular in tropical biomes due to sampling biases Rare and small-ranged species may also be particularly vulnerable to change and our results regarding the response of ecosystems to climate change may be affected by their omission the boreal forest shows the broadest ranges of species with the lowest decline associated with habitat loss the climate of boreal forests is predicted to become suitable for many species that are currently not found there While local forest protection efforts should be made everywhere international efforts for forest conservation strategies should primarily focus on conserving the remaining most pristine extensive forest ecoregions The strongest effort of restoration may be performed in temperate forests where historical losses were highest and recovery might bring the most direct benefits tropical dry and Mediterranean regions may require the most acute conservation attention to avoid the extinction of a large faction of species our findings emphasize the need for local restoration and conservation decisions that are tailored to the unique characteristics of each specific forest For small ecoregions (bounding box less than 1000 km in width or length) the ecoregion with a 1000 km buffer was included in the polygon a 1000 km buffer around the part of the ecoregion that is within 200 km of an observation was included in the polygon if there were more than 10,000 observations these were spatially aggregated for the construction of the range We extracted all variables at a 30 arc-second resolution and projected them to the World Geodetic System 1984 (EPSG:4326) projection The final distribution map was then achieved by taking the average over the predictions of the four individual models We ran the model for 24,140 species for which at least 20 spatially explicit observations were available after aggregation To avoid overfitting when modeling rare species we limited the number of predictor variables used in each model based on the number of observations for the corresponding species We ensured that the number of observations available was at least 10 times the number of predictors used For species that had less than 90 observations the most important predictors for each species were selected based on the variable importance obtained when training a random forest model with all predictors The number of selected predictors was determined by the number of occurrences in the training data (e.g. two predictors were selected for species with 20-29 occurrences) All nine predictors were used for species that had at least 90 observations and we used a 3-fold cross-validation with random fold assignment to determine the optimal threshold to transform the probabilistic output to binary by assessing the threshold maximizing the true skill statistic (TSS) as well as the area under the ROC curve (AUC) during cross-validation the distributions were computed with a single model considering the average values over the five models rather than taking the average of the predictions of five models each considering one GCM The first three axes of the ordination were retained The two first principal components were used to represent the taxonomic and phylogenetic ordination results in a 2-dimensional representation of the environmental space The global map of median range size was obtained by computing the median of the range sizes for all species that were predicted to be suitable in each 30-arc-second pixel Further information on research design is available in the Nature Portfolio Companies and organizations may receive a subsequent assessment if they employ self-employed people for work that should actually be done as contracted employees. No fines will be issued for any offenses this year The impact of the stricter enforcement is becoming more noticeable Randstad sees based on the number of starting and quitting self-employed people The number of people signing up as self-employed is staying at a reasonably stable level while a continuous rise was apparent before this Randstad emphasized that there are still a lot of uncertainties about the enforcement “It is crucial for those involved that there is clarity," Tiel said there is a "kind of no man's land," and that does not work out positively for anyone Randstad also reported on Wednesday that the tightness of the Dutch labor market has been reduced slightly Randstad labor market analyst Bart van Krimpen explained there are still professions that are struggling with staff The shortage is concentrated in professions that are crucial for major social challenges such as the energy transition and the ageing population and care Van Krimpen warned that it is questionable whether all these challenges will succeed simultaneously in combination with the shortage which makes the challenge even greater and increases tension You are using an outdated browser. The Chevy Chase native was in town to promote her second book “The Absolute Woman: It’s All About Feminine Power,” a new work of nonfiction that’s part-memoir/part self-help guide to living your best life Tiel knows all about the power of a red dress She designed the iconic red off-the-shoulder gown worn by Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman.” Her version of the dress has sold for more than 30 years at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman a longevity that’s almost unheard of in the ever-changing world of fashion seems to have been born with a work ethic and business savvy that’s continued throughout her life she bought her own phone line so she could continue her business without the impediment of parents she moved to Paris with business partner Mia Fonssagrives Their designs were as bold as a red dress on a first date and it wasn’t long before they were invited on the Johnny Carson Show to reveal their game-changing miniskirts She became a costume designer and it was on the set of “What’s New Pussycat?” (her first credited film) that she designed the first-ever zip-up jumpsuit she joined the Home Shopping Network to produce a line of affordable dresses which soon led to sportswear Oprah Winfrey and Catherine Zeta Jones in Vicky Tiel Tiel attributes much of her success to her resolve not to “dance with crazies.” Tiel’s wisdom comes from more than five decades of dressing some of the world’s most powerful women Martha Stewart taught her to always be a lady to never give up and to compliment people who do a good job Princess Grace taught her to dress in timeless fashion and in clothes that flatter you (“Never wear ugly sloppy shorts even if it’s on the cover of Vogue”) Oprah Winfrey taught her the importance of generosity And Elizabeth Taylor taught her that “being powerful is the opposite of being prejudiced.” her lifelong friend and Paris housemate (Tiel’s first husband was Taylor’s makeup artist) advised her to start a perfume line Tiel’s fragrances sold on HSN are a significant source of income And it was Taylor who prompted Tiel to give up alcohol 25 years ago After drinking together for more than two decades When Taylor went off to the Betty Ford Clinic Tiel checked in to an ashram and hasn’t had a drink since Elizabeth and I had a special mimosa – one third Dom Perignon Champagne one third Russian vodka and one third freshly squeezed orange juice in a crystal goblet over crushed ice,” she said “I attribute my long lasting career to the fact that so many other fashion designers drink,” Tiel said “And it’s a very stressful job.” Tiel eats “French style,” she explained but leaves room for a small portion of dessert every day A practical grocery list and typical day’s menu is included in the book Tiel has another suggestion for staying healthy and happy Vicky Tiel in a suit she designed on her wedding day to Mike Hamilton “Marry a younger man,” she said “My second husband is 15 years younger Tiel hopes that her advice will reach twenty and thirty-something women who are struggling on the dating scene What’s the biggest mistake women make when they’re looking for love “Chasing after a man that doesn’t love them,” she quickly responded Her book emphasizes the importance of women making their own money something Tiel can proudly say she has done all her life “In my years of measuring women and talking to them in the dressing rooms women would break down and tell me about their lives,” Tiel explained “I was shocked at how many women married to powerful men were mistreated and I came to the conclusion that they had to have their own thing something to make them feel powerful instead of sitting in the house all day contemplating the jewelry they want.” A large fire broke out early Sunday morning at a business complex located on Morsestraat in Tiel with flames rising from the roof of the building on the Kellen business park Firefighters faced significant challenges reaching the heart of the fire fire officials warned that it would take several more hours to fully extinguish the blaze There were no reported injuries or casualties from the fire The building houses several small businesses including a catering service and a publishing company Firefighters continue to monitor the area and work on extinguishing any remaining hot spots The 46-year-old from Buren was one of two with overall cases rising by 254 per cent over the past two decades Tiel Lillehagen was diagnosed with throat cancer eight years ago and is the secretary of the Victorian Head and Neck Cancer Education and Support Group.Credit: Jason South While oropharyngeal (throat) cancer is still considered rare, it’s predicted that 1055 Australians will be diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease this year While this type of cancer used to be mainly caused by smoking and excessive alcohol consumption is now linked to the development of 64 per cent of these cancers in Australia “Clinicians often talk about HPV causing a tsunami of head and neck cancers,” said Head and Neck Cancer Australia chief executive Nadia Rosin About 90 per cent of Australians will become infected with HPV at some point during their lives The majority will clear the virus within one to two years and never know they have it the virus will linger and cause cancerous changes to the cells in their throats Tiel Lillehagen was among this unlucky cohort the general manager of a property development company developed a sore throat that would not go away for four months He didn’t think much about it and prescribed me some antibiotics,” the 50-year-old said “I went back to him over the course of four months Lillehagen received a diagnosis just days before he his wife and their two young children were due to host Christmas lunch “I hadn’t even heard about head and neck cancer Lillehagen initially felt some stigma about his diagnosis due to its link to a sexually transmitted infection thanks to his role as secretary of the Victorian Head and Neck Cancer Education and Support Group The group meets monthly to discuss everything from treatment and their fear of the cancer returning to football I understand that HPV really is the common cold of STIs,” he said Tiel Lillehagen went to his GP for months complaining of a sore throat before receiving a diagnosis of throat cancer.Credit: Jason South Lillehagen suspects he caught HPV while he was at university more than 20 years before his diagnosis of a cancerous tumour in his throat His treatment involved 35 doses of radiotherapy over seven weeks and chemotherapy he might have been able to treat his tumour with just surgery “It’s a very lonely treatment process,” he said “It’s a gruelling treatment regime with high morbidity You suffer from fatigue and are in pain from the burning You come out of the other end feeling quite isolated.” He has been left with some long-term side effects from this treatment: he suffers from a dry mouth struggles to swallow certain foods like chicken breast and cake But he’s grateful to be alive and has been cancer-free for eight years from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute said the rollout of the HPV vaccine to high school girls in 2007 and boys in 2013 would reduce the prevalence of HPV-related throat cancers But the benefits of this program may not be apparent for some time because there is a 20- to 30-year lag between contracting HPV and potentially developing throat cancer Antonsson said the rising popularity of oral sex was driving the rise in HPV-positive throat cancers Research has found that more than 90 per cent of Australians have performed and received oral sex “Changing sexual behaviour is driving this change,” Antonsson said “People with HPV-positive cancer have more oral-sex partners.” Dr Matthew Magarey is seeing a rise in throat cancers.Credit: Simon Schluter Antonsson conducted research that found people who don’t clear the HPV virus – which heightens their risk of throat and cervical cancers – are often smokers About 85 per cent of throat cancer cases in Australia involve men Researchers have theorised that this could be because clearing At 75, she says she is the oldest living female designer in Paris. In addition to maintaining her own studio, Tiel has designed for Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, Goldie Hawn and Catherine Zeta Jones. And throughout her star-studded career, she befriended Elizabeth Taylor, received advice from Coco Chanel and met Salvador Dalí, the details of which she'll discuss at the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg on Thursday. Tiel has been selling her line of fragrances and apparel through St. Petersburg-based HSN. Someone from the network brought her to the Dalí Museum, where she met Peter Tush, the museum's curator of education. Tiel told Tush about her connection to Dalí: she'd hired his muse, the sexually-ambiguous model Amanda Lear, to walk in her first fashion show. "My designs have been exhibited in five museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art" Tiel said. "But the idea for me to be speaking and exhibiting at the Dalí Museum is something that very few fashion designers get to do." Fashion is fluid and "invention" depends on who you ask. Other designers have claimed the mini skirt and the wrap dress, Mary Quant and Diane von Furstenberg chief among them. Raised among the political elite of Chevy Chase, Md., Tiel realized early on that she could use clothes to express herself creatively. She went to the Parsons School of Design after graduating high school, but found her aesthetic deviated from the boxy constructions being taught there. She favored revealing, provocative clothing that would accentuate the female form. In 1962, she started designing skirts with a hemline four inches above the knee. She paired the skirt with lace stockings and a see-through top. Tiel is unapologetic about her approach to women's fashion, which has been to attract men. "I never stopped being feminine and using my body to excite men," she said. "Because if a woman is interested in a man, she should dress in a way that a man thinks is beautiful." Tiel met fellow student Mia Fonssagrives at Parsons the following year. Tiel and Fonssagrives, whose stepfather is the photographer Irving Penn, clicked and decided to become partners. They made their way to Paris and through connections debuted and modeled their colorful minidresses in designer Louis Feraud's runway show in 1964. They were an overnight sensation, instant it girls. They were dubbed the Ye Ye Girls and hired to make the costumes for Woody Allen's What's New Pussycat?, including Ursula Anders' cashmere, snakeskin catsuit. The pair collaborated on an updated, sexy version of the wrap dress, a garment that had been around since the 1940s. The clothes defined the Swinging '60s look in Europe. Among the many celebrities Tiel met and dressed, Elizabeth Taylor was perhaps the most influential. For 25 years, Tiel and her husband, the Hollywood make up artist Ron Berkeley, were part of Taylor and Richard Burton's entourage. Taylor financially backed Mia Vicky, the duo's boutique in Paris' Left Bank. They ventured into their own fragrance lines under advice from Coco Chanel. Their friendship lasted through the end of Taylor's life. In 1977, Tiel designed the Torrid dress for actress Anne Parillaud. The silhouette was so popular, a decade later she was still selling the dress while designing for Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. Costume designers from the movie Pretty Woman spotted the red version at Giorgio Beverly Hills and nabbed it for the movie. Tiel claims she's never received credit for it by film producers. Tiel's life took a surprising turn after her marriage to Berkeley ended. She ended up in Key West in 1987, where she met her current husband. They moved to a farm in the panhandle between Pensacola and Alabama. Tiel splits her time farming there and designing gowns in the same studio she's maintained at 21 Rue Bonaparte in Paris since it was Mia Vicky. Her father taught her to be financially independent. When she came under fire by feminists in the late 1960s because of her penchant for revealing clothing, she pointed out that her own company employed 25 women. She's complied these life lessons in a recent book, The Absolute Woman: It's All About Feminine Power. She credits Taylor's advice that "you can't dance with crazy" as the most important lesson of the book — don't react when someone tries to bait you into a negative situation. As for style tips, it's important to stay current on fashion, hair and makeup trends,Tiel said. She never checks a bag when flying because luggage gets lost. She's mastered the art of packing. And one bit of her advice will never go out of style. "The most important thing is to be happy,"she said. "Don't let anybody put you down or make you feel bad. Just spend your whole day working on doing what you want to accomplish and being happy." Contact Maggie Duffy @mduffy@tampabay.com. Follow @maggiedalexis. The mound, which contained the remains of about 60 men, women and children, had several passages through which the sun shone directly on the longest and shortest days of the year. The town of Tiel, where the site was discovered, said on its Facebook page: “What a spectacular archaeological discovery! Archaeologists have found a 4,000-year-old religious sanctuary on an industrial site.” Read moreIt added: “This is the first time a site like this has been discovered in the Netherlands.” Digging on the so-called open-air sanctuary started in 2017 in the small village about 19 miles (31km) south-east of Utrecht and the results were made public on Wednesday Studying differences in clay composition Oteiza attended the screening of the film in concert West Side Story at the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao (Spain) performed by the BOS Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao – Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa under the baton of the guest conductor Ernst Van Tiel Previously we published Gorka‘s comments on the rehearsals (read article) and now here you have his impressions about the concert as well as an interview with its conductor the second and last performance of fabulous film West Side Story in concert arrived on Friday Oct-5th at 7:30 p.m in charge of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra – Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa (BOS) and diligent conducting of the Ernst Van Tiel In total we had almost three hours of a fantastic audiovisual show A unique experience to enjoy a classic movie in a way that can only be lived in a concert hall The truth is that having attended the dress rehearsals on Wednesday, October 3rd (read article) we could already guess the quality of what we would find in the final concert but the expectations were surpassed in the moment of truth But let’s go step by step and let’s start with the details The first thing to note is an almost full house at the Euskalduna Palace only about 100 tickets were available to complete the total of 2,164 seats clearly showing the interest that the public has for this work West Side Story in concert was a risky and courageous bet by the team that prepares the programming of the BOS are more used to traditional symphonic concerts But as it could be seen by the box office success the bet was widely corresponded and very well received by all the attendees is the author of the fabulous music of West Side Story; a perfect amalgam of order and chaos music to express the nonsense of hate or the story of Romeo and Juliet All of them are perfect ingredients for a great show accompanied by the symphonic potential of the whole orchestra Although the main inspiration for Leonard Bernstein came from the Shakespeare‘s story of Romeo and Juliet the musical West Side Story (1957) was finally shaped shortly after reading a brief article in the Los Angeles Times about Latino gang fights from the West Side of San Bernardino which transformed the original story into a conflict between a Puerto Rican gang (represented by the Sharks) and a Polish gang (represented by the Jets) The film West Side Story (1961) directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise and in addition to the fabulous music by Leonard Bernstein has some great and accurate lyrics by the legendary Stephen Sondheim and choreography by award-winning Jerome Robbins The 2 and a half hours of the film were divided into two acts for the concert: a first act of about 80 minutes was followed by the second act of 74 minutes Although it may seem that the almost 3 hours of film in concert could be long that intersperses musical numbers with scenes with dialogues of the actors playing Leonard Bernstein’s powerful music live (a music that hooks you from the beginning) you could find that there was a large screen over the orchestra in which the film could be seen in its original format leaving two black bands at the top and at the bottom These were skillfully used to show the subtitles in Basque above and in Spanish below since the film was screened in its original English version keeping the dialogues and the voices of the songs intact exceeding in an outstanding way the difficult challenge of performing such a changing music in a synchronized and precise way with the film The musicians had the help of small headphones from which at times they received the temporary marks (the famous ‘click-track’) with which they were able to match with precision the most complex scenes of the movie But let’s not forget that much of this merit also falls on the work of conductor Ernst Van Tiel kept the rhythm and tension throughout the concert getting power and strength from the orchestra especially in those scenes that required intensity and a perfect fusion of image and music I would like to highlight the fabulous overture of almost 5 minutes at the beginning of the film and only with the music and the strength of the orchestra a summary of all the main themes that we will be able to enjoy later is made establishing the musical tone of the rest of the movie we have the great dance scene in the gym at the rhythm of mambo where the brass and percussion sections of the orchestra were outstanding and we could also highlight the development of the theme ‘America’ which although started a bit slow for my taste immediately picked up the rhythm and managed to transmit all the musical intensity of the scene in perfect synchronicity with the verbal and choreographed confrontations of the protagonists which we greatly enjoyed thanks to the fabulous quality performance of the BOS conducted by Ernst Van Tiel Starting the 2018/2019 season of the BOS with West Side Story paying homage to Leonard Bernstein on the centenary of his birth has been a risky bet but at the same time very well received by the orchestra’s subscribers and by the public in general From here we would like to send our congratulations to the BOS programming team and to its technical director Borja Pujol for using film music within the repertoire of the orchestra And looking at the success of the two shows of West Side Story this year… maybe next year it would be possible to consider something similar How about a classic musical movie like “Singing in the Rain” It seems like a very appropriate title for Bilbao Could you introduce yourself to somebody who doesn’t know you Who are you and what do you do in a regular basis many different kinds of music in many orchestras around the world all that music… but since a few years I do a lot of film concerts with live orchestra In the past film music was not very highly respected The orchestras are now discovering how fantastic that music is Not only John Williams but also in the past like Bernard Hermann that people who know the Alexander Nevsky cantata they do not know the Alexander Nevsky film music And there’s a funny story because after the recording of Alexander Nevsky And Prokofiev wrote by heart the cantata for everything that he remembered 33 minutes… but music for the film is 65 minutes So in 2004 it was my first big film concert Alexander Nevsky and it was a thrill for the orchestra and for everybody and I’m recording a lot of film music Did you always knew you wanted to be an orchestra conductor Or you just went into the music world and then it just came I started quite late with music and then I played several years in symphony orchestras I also played jazz music and I played pop music and then I started to study piano… and then I started quite late to study conducting So by the first time I was conducting I was 38 I was twice as old as most of the other students but you cannot be seen as a young promising conductor But I love to study and here I study a lot And in the case of this fantastic music of Bernstein you feel that they are both great conductors And John Williams is not just a conductor of his own music he is very experienced in conducting the Hollywood Bowl in all kinds of music for years And you feel that everything is so natural What kind of skills does a conductor need for a live to picture concert or for a recording session for a movie compared to conducting classical music in a concert hall what is very important for playing with film And this is also for recording: to be able to keep this tempo but that the orchestra can still feel free and breathing So this is what I’m still developing… to give the orchestra the feeling that they are free but in the meantime they are really strict This one of the most known works from Leonard Bernstein What can you tell us about the music of West Side Story from the point of view of the conductor Because you will see it in a very different from the way from how we see it… and you will enjoy it differently as well… but I see the effect the music has to support the drama And this is also part of Bernstein’s experience in opera or playing with soloists What’s very important is that as soon as you start playing the first rehearsal Also I can say that when I was a student in the conservatory although it was not done to love this musical which was a ‘deeper world’ It was very difficult for Bernstein to be accepted as a conductor they had a secret love for the music of West Side Story but they could not say it openly and widely because they would not be taken seriously… And I remember the first time I heard the music of West Side Story   It was one of the first CDs I owned and I was trapped because he would have turned one hundred in 2018… And I just want to say… don’t forget about his other music… what would you recommend to him or her to listen I would recommend really to listen to Chichester Psalms… to Candide And also I wish I had one of his talents; he was a great conductor and a fantastic piano player so… (*laughs*) It depends on the quality of the orchestra and the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra is a very good orchestra we had time to prepare everything very much in detail and I trust them very much; that’s important I don’t have to do everything three times before I’m sure they can play it and in the dress rehearsal I’m not stopping for mistakes Because the orchestra is so good that they know what’s wrong Are you using a click-track when you are conducting It was originally not recorded with a click-track so for a few of the songs we use the click-track let’s talk about one score you conducted the music for ‘The Artist’ by Ludovic Bource How was that project and how would you describe the music because Ludovic Bource prepared himself for years to be able to have the atmosphere of the 20s/30s I met him on the first day of the recording there was new music under by the door of my hotel So you have to read it and learn it before going to the studio and let me tell you that all the recordings have their things but we’re running out of time and you have to get back to the rehearsals Thank you for dedicating some was sleeping with whom The gay secretaries were especially good at collecting that necessary information and Richard Hanley’s years at MGM made him a sexpert on the entire film industry Richard Burton did not partake in the gossip; his nose was always in a book if he wasn’t writing in his diary especially if the stories concerned English royalty I was able to add bits about models and musicians and I had to keep up with the latest about her two favorite male actors the twin sexpots Marlon Brando (who I assume slept with Elizabeth and everyone else) and Warren Beatty (who tried) both of whom she demanded as her leading men if Richard did not suit the part and 50s were “studio owned” and lucky to get their favorite hairdresser for a film Elizabeth spent her entire life as a celebrity At 16 she was already the most photographed movie star in the world The knowledge of how the old system worked allowed her to envision a new way to live as a celebrity She would find all her favorite people in each category—hair etc.—and travel the world with them in tow she’d have the producer of the film pay for it all Did she like being holed up in enormous hotel suites with all her favorite food and wine and her favorite people being flown in from all over the world to be at her beck and call The children were in their suites when out of school; one day we got a phone call from Richard Hanley because Ron’s son who was 13 and on vacation at the Dorchester in London was ordering a dozen oysters from room service for breakfast each morning with his eggs and mimosas or a best friend flown in to spice up conversation Rarely was there a formal sit-down except for holidays Photographers have been around since the camera was invented but it wasn’t until 1959 that Federico Fellini coined the name Paparazzo for a photographer in La Dolce Vita groups of photographers stalking celebs became known as paparazzi Elizabeth had her own paparazzi that shadowed her everywhere she went Richard had him arrested hiding in a tree in Puerto Vallarta There were never fewer than 4 photographers or more than 20 every day The paparazzi started in the middle 50s with Mike Todd’s death and Elizabeth’s Debbie-Eddie breakup I think she was relieved when Jackie Kennedy came along and they could share the spotlight and Ron Galella when Elizabeth went out to make an appearance it was always in a major gown and Richard in a tux She went the whole nine yards—diamond tiara Going out was a performance and would be recorded in every paper In those days there were only a few movie magazines It was Elizabeth and Jackie Kennedy who aroused the public’s interest in off-screen celebrity lifestyles Fashion trends would be launched from the way they tied their Hermès scarves Grace Kelly was also a target of paparazzi but her husband ruled Monaco and he wanted Grace to become low key after their marriage By the time I joined the entourage full-time in 1966 Elizabeth no longer had any sense of the real world Once she handed me a hundred-dollar bill to buy a bikini on the beach in Rome and sweetly asked if it would be enough She could have been robbed blind by the entourage but we all loved her and would never have done it She never minded the vast hotel or dinner bills as long as everyone was happy Elizabeth’s favorite pastime was eating and drinking on the set in a private dining room or in the hotel suite Special guests were brought in for lunch or dinner Everybody who was anybody on the planet wanted to meet her so it was not unusual for luncheon guests to include Valentino heads of states like Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia or the duke of this or that English actors who were in town would come over to take on Richard and Burton would make fun of each other’s Shakespearian accents as they ripped apart other actors Elizabeth’s lunches were eating marathons often lasting three to four hours where chefs at the studio invented dishes to please her Helping the unfortunate (humans and animals) How much money she was being paid to do a movie Her fame and beauty did not matter very much to her She was never one to worry about herself as much as she worried about others She really didn’t pursue the film career she might have had wanting only to know that there was enough to pay each vast hotel bill one of which amounted to a few hundred thousand for a multi-week stay (it would be $1 million today) The reason she wanted the world’s top salary (she was the first actor to be paid $1 million for a movie) was that she loved to “mess” with producers Having been given a hard time early in her career as a child star by Louis B she never looked back once she was free from his clutches When Ron did the makeup that won an Oscar for 7 Faces of Dr only the head of each department in the studio got screen credit The actual person who did the work never got credit Ron was the first actual makeup man to get credit for a film he did the individual makeup and fashion designers get the credit in spite of the fact that they were total opposites She loved the challenge of being married to an intellectual and a great actor and a big star Their marriage was like taming a wild horse His idea of happiness was to be alone with a vodka tonic Every morning he would get up early and type in his diary Sometimes he would copy what he wrote and give it to one of us He’d begin his day reading one of his five books—one in the car His taste ran from his favorite authors Dylan Thomas and Hemingway to the poets e cummings and Keats (whom he was always quoting) to biographies of world leaders such as Winston Churchill to Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels Elizabeth had 20 pieces of tapestry luggage filled with clothes; Richard had no clothes but two trunks of books Elizabeth learned to enjoy mystery novels and became a fan of John D who gave away everything and discarded lovers and husbands He had an ugly green suit from his Oxford acting days along with an ugly green typewriter also from his old student days Richard liked everything basic and old and green and with her newly acquired intellectual confidence she set out to mingle with the nobles of Europe Once she was invited by Baron Guy de Rothschild and his wife to their country home Jacqueline de Ribes was to accompany them to the château It was the late-60s fashion look: rusty browns and riding boots were the craze with Yves Saint Laurent’s fall collection Elizabeth dressed for the château in a pink-and-purple geometric-print Pucci minidress with giant diamond and emerald rings on each finger except her thumbs “that doesn’t look like the French countryside.” “I’m going as a rich hippie!” She was a big hit As Richard complained to me when they returned all the Frenchmen formed a circle around her over cocktails like Scarlett O’Hara at the Twelve Oaks barbeque She truly felt all humans had the same value in society She hated snobs almost as much as she hated cheap producers French Vogue sent a team to the De Laurentiis Studios to photograph Elizabeth wearing furs The studio dressing room was very small and crowded and had lots of newspapers on the floor with yet-to-be-cleaned-up dog pee since he was usually cooped up with the entourage like the rest of us The self-important fashion editor and weary assistant waltzed in with a rack of 10 furs They were horrified by the dog pee and the décor and started to complain and act like prima donnas and I knew she was going to play with them “you were going to get one of these coats for free.” she waved her hand to dismiss the fashion editor I think this softheartedness explained many of her marriages She was a sucker for a sob story; she believed everyone She once confided in me that her childhood was lonely: no friends I had no real inner self-confidence.” I was astounded The most beautiful woman in the world admitting her own insecurity All my preconceived ideas of her being the untouchable movie star were forgotten I had drawn her at 15 in art class as my favorite movie star Now this down-to-Earth woman was my friend Elizabeth’s generosity was her foremost quality and it shined in her love for all her friends and extended family right here inside the waterfront Lake Worth home of Julio and Leslie Gonzalez is noted philanthropist and Instagram socialite Jean Shafiroff wearing it: the stunning gown known as the “Pretty Woman” dress Vicky Tiel’s silk creation is draped just so with a corseted bodice that shows off every curve It’s a gasp-producing dress — and sometimes a gasp-inducing dress with her perfect coif and beautiful features knows how to pose precisely for maximum wow — and this dress fits her to the millimeter Tiel came to Shafiroff’s Manhattan home and measured her where Tiel has the longest-running atelier of any fashion designer she marks 55 years in the fashion business She started designing in Paris just a few years after she was a high school cheerleader in Chevy Chase strutting down the boulevards in thigh-high skirts and see-through lace tops and attracting the attention of men like Warren Beatty Her first husband was 15 years older than she was a famous makeup artist who introduced her to celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton Her current husband is 15 years younger than she is a boat captain she met in Key West and married in 1996 But it’s Vicky’s girlfriends and clients who have kept her in business so long Many of them are here at this splashy book signing including health-care exec Elizabeth Fago and philanthropist and dance patron Anka Palitz “Now that Karl (Lagerfeld) has passed away I’ve been working in Paris the longest,” she says to me An American designer has the longest-running atelier in Paris?” because I have known Vicky since the 1980s when I was the fashion editor of The Denver Post Longevity is about making women look fabulous “My point of view about fashion is that I only want two things to happen: to sell and to sell to sell the exact same dress for 30 years — that works perfectly well for me,” she writes in her book and selling dresses is all about looking good in the dress when you zip it up!” She is one of the least pretentious people I’ve ever met — in spite of the fact that Elizabeth Taylor was one of her best friends and she has dressed every celebrity from Barbra Streisand to Martha Stewart as we are surrounded by dozens of Palm Beachers eager to get Vicky’s autograph on her new book “The Absolute Woman,” it’s stunning how natural and youthful she looks at 75 There’s plenty of Botox holding up the faces in this room but nothing is holding up Vicky’s face but her smile tiered “caftan” dress she designed first for Taylor and adapted for the Home Shopping Network where she started selling her designs in 2011 She sold 12,000 of her signature wrap dress — which she designed years before Diane Von Furstenberg — in one day on HSN (Personal confession: I own 10 of Vicky’s HSN wrap dresses Most of them I bought on sale for less than $50 and I can wear them to any type of function It’s a dress for “The Absolute Woman” — because it’s feminine and functional and the absolute woman makes her own money.) let’s get to the point of “The Absolute Woman” book: It’s Vicky’s guide to having “feminine power.” “Always make your own money and work forever Then you really can love yourself as you are: the true boss of you.” A fashion show fundraising event hosted by AIR Artists proved to be a big success AIR Artists welcomed the community to its “Timeless Fashions: A Tribute to International It’s the first one of its kind found in the Netherlands, project leader Ilse Schuuring told Omroep Gelderland on Wednesday. The solar calendar showed that the people of 4,000 years ago tracked the passage of time and were aware of the past and planned for the future - a crucial step in human development, she said. “The calendar can be seen as our first physical observatory. More than that, it provides insights into the cosmological and social world at the beginning of the Bronze Age. The cycle of life and death, the sun, and ancestors, but also the world of the living were intertwined in it.” According to the archeologists, the largest burial mound with the solar calendar on top was used as a cemetery for at least 800 years. Men, women and “remarkably many children” were buried in the mound. “Archeologists have long thought that burial mounds were also built and used for rituals and celebrations. The research in Tiel proves that this was indeed the case,” the municipality said. The archeologists are investigating the area before the expansion of the Medel commercial park. According to the municipality of Tiel, it is the largest archeological investigation in the Betuwe since the construction of the Betuwelijn in the late 1990s. Archeologists made over a million finds in the area, including the oldest glass bead ever found in the Netherlands. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. Among the people who have inspired the artist’s creations and make, albeit disguised, cameos in the new show: Lisa Fonssagrives (wearing Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli), Irving Penn, a Bond Girl, the architect Peter Marino, and Madonna in her Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra—a cast of characters that reflect her rich and varied life. Here the artist walks us through some of the experiences that have had the greatest influence upon her. When did you first discover your artistic calling? “My mother,” says Mia Fonssagrive Solow, “called herself a clothes hanger.” My mother taught me everything—how to ride a horse, how to take care of horses. You know, you don’t graduate from school in Sweden if you can’t change a tire. My father was very bohemian. I mean, if there was a hurricane, we’d get in the Studebaker and drive out to Montauk to look at the waves. Nature was his great passion. We would dive for mussels and then we’d cook them: That was called living off the land. We didn’t have much money. Then Irving came into my life, and he taught me to have a rigorous work ethic. My father did not have a work ethic. It was just joie de vivre. Irving had a rigid work ethic: You go to work at eight and you leave at five and you leave your work behind. It was always like that, no matter what he was doing. It rubbed off. I went to an all-girls boarding school [after Dalton]. In the brochure it said, “Give your child a clothes allowance so they can make something to wear on the weekends.” When I asked my mother about it, she said, “Here’s a piece of fabric; sew yourself whatever you want.” So I lay down on the floor, and I made a shape and I sewed it together. I was terribly proud when I finally got it right. I think I was 12 at the time. From a 1963 Vogue photo essay, “Irving Penn’s Love Letter to a Farm,” Lisa Fonssagrives and Fido with the sheep. Out on the farm in Huntington [the Penns’ country residence], we’d have breakfast and then everybody went to their work. My mother was painting at the time, Irving was doing platinum prints, I had the sewing room to myself, and my brother Tom was welding. Every day, Irving would say, “What are you going to do in life? What are you going to be?” It was a question that drove me nuts. At 13, I didn't have an answer, but he expected an answer. From a 1963 Vogue photo essay, “Irving Penn’s Love Letter to a Farm,” Lisa and Mia Fonssagrives. I started making dresses for my mother, and my mother would wear them, and then her friends would buy them for 35 bucks. I used these beautiful flower prints that looked very much like what Pucci would end up using. So I thought, Okay, now I know what I’m going to do—I’m going to go to Parsons. I got a part-time scholarship, and then I worked all summer to pay for the rest. As soon as I learned to make a sleeve, I could charge more for the clothes. Mia Fonssagrives and Vicky Tiel in Paris, 1966. Can you tell us about meeting Vicky Tiel and starting your fashion business? Vicky and I became friends immediately at Parsons. If someone told us, “That’s how you shouldn’t dress,” we thought, This is how we should dress. But we’re very, very different. After Parsons we did this fashion show and Eugenia Sheppard [the New York Herald Tribune’s fashion journalist] wrote about it. And then we went to Paris. We found a space in the building of Madeleine Castaing on Rue Bonaparte. I was in charge of renovating it—the material, hard things—and Vicky was in charge of pillows and mirrors and what’s called the flou. We had $50,000 from a deal we’d made to sell our story to Paramount, and Elizabeth Taylor gave us another $50,000, which we paid back after the first year. Elizabeth Taylor at a 1968 fashion show of Mia Fonssagrives and Vicky Tiel’s designs. So you’re running around Paris with your beautiful hair and your miniskirts. What’s next? I learned woodworking in a shop in Topanga Canyon where there was a family of boys that built furniture. They showed me how to work with the heavy machinery, and they let me use the shop at night when they were finished. I made huge pieces. When I came back to the East Coast, I met my husband, [Sheldon Solow], and we went on a trip to Greece, where the Cycladic pieces really impacted me. Is sustainability something that you think about? Constantly. We’ve destroyed the earth as we know it. But my art isn’t going to sustain either; it’s not going to survive what’s coming. 1 / 10ChevronChevronPhoto: Steve Benisty / Courtesy of Mia Fonssagrives Solow“Robots/Femmebots”Mia Fonssagrives Solow’s ETs.And how have you organized the current exhibition? Well, there are humorous, dysfunctional robots. We have so many busts of Caesar, Caligula, and all of those guys. I thought, I’m going to make busts of some of the people that I like. There’s also a sculpture of Madonna, in her Jean Paul Gaultier bronze bra. (It’s made from the tops of my eye drops.) They’re not robots that do anything. I mean, I would love one of them to bring me breakfast. They do have personalities, and they all have names. My robots are humorous ideas of what robots could be, instead of the fearful kind of robot that’s going to take over. The fembots also show the power and strength of women. There are even some sculptures of my mother. She was one of the original fembots in my mind. Robots/Femmebots is on view at Findlay Galleries from September 12 to October 12. BLM spent the past couple of months preparing the wild horses for adoption "Once we take them from the range they entered the Boise Off-Range Wild Horse Corral and then we began the process to prepare them for adoption," Tiel-Nelson said and a schedule like that so they can be prepared to go into private care." A process that is part of its management strategy to prevent wild horses from overwhelming public lands "We have been tasked by Congress to manage these horses in balance with other uses with our ultimate goal being healthy wild horses on healthy rangeland," Tiel-Nelson when a wild horse herd can double in size it can quickly outgrow the lands capacity to sustain that herd in a healthy manner." their healthy management number is between 37 and 60 wild horses "That is why today we are offering the ability for the public to view these horses We have about 200 horses here for the public to come and take a look at and we are offering them for adoption through a variety of avenues," Tiel-Nelson said One of those avenues includes online adoption through BLMs Online Corral starting Feb Every interested adopter will need to fill out an application "BLM is really interested in assuring that these animals go to good homes," Tiel-Nelson said "Depending on the age of the animal adopters have to show that they have the appropriate size and height of corral to care for the animal they can never be convicted of an animal cruelty charge Some of these wild horses will be adopted through their Mustang Mania Program "The Mustang Mania trainer incentive program coming up is where the trainers adopt a horse and they work with that animal for a good number of days," Tiel-Nelson said "Then they will compete in an in-hand showcase in Nampa over the fourth of July weekend A good number of the younger horses from this herd will go into the University of Idaho 4-H program "Where we partner our younger wild horses with our 4-H club members," Tiel-Nelson said "It is a great win-win cause 4-H kids get to learn great horsemanship and horse handling skills and then they offer that animal for adoption at the end."
