The Dutchman has been CEO of Ionity since May 2024
van Tilburg was Head of Charging at Tesla in the EMEA region
He originally comes from the IT world and has worked for Microsoft
Ionity currently operates more than 5,000 charging parks in 24 European countries
the locations were mainly optimised for long-distance charging
Ionity CEO Jeroen van Tilburg explains where his future focus lies - and what the new Spark Alliance means for customers and the charging market
Enabling electric mobility over long distances – that was the primary goal of Ionity
which was founded on behalf of several major car manufacturers
With its fast-charging stations on motorways
Ionity was to help shareholders from the VW Group
Ford and later Hyundai-Kia to sell their electric cars more effectively
The vision was to quickly charge for a few minutes on the journey between two major cities and then continue on
With more than 5,000 charging parks in 24 European countries
Ionity has now achieved this part of its mission – long-distance charging is now possible
If you add the fast chargers of other operators
But what’s next for Ionity in the coming phase
Ionity is also a founding member of the Spark Alliance – a consortium of four major providers who want to lay nothing less than the foundation for the “largest and most reliable public charging network in Europe.” We spoke to Ionity CEO Jeroen van Tilburg about the alliance
Ionity’s new fleet service and charging prices
Ionity founded the Spark Alliance together with three other CPOs to simplify charging electric vehicles in Europe
Can you briefly describe the basic idea behind the alliance
How did the alliance of these four partners come into existence
The alliance was formed by these four players because we all saw the same challenge in the industry
There are currently plenty of charging options
but to the point that the landscape is quite fragmented with many different players
different expectations around reliability and uptime
And that is quite confusing for lots of people
There are so many options that people feel overwhelmed
especially if you’re new to EV ownership
You’re familiar with the difference between AC
we need to take on that responsibility in providing clarity
everybody jumped into this new charging industry like in the gold rush
oil companies or other players who treat charging as a side job – not making it their core business
It’s our bread and butter and our business relies on this
We have naturally found one another because we have so many shared values and consider ourselves to be leaders in this industry
So we created the Spark Alliance as a quality mark
Let me give you an example: If you want to buy a new TV set and you go to the local electronics store
there are hundreds of TV sets in the store
What can help you with your decision is a mark like Dolby Atmos or THX
You don’t have to know all the technical details
but you know this TV delivers the quality that you are looking for
But isn’t it like the same problem with what you described that an experienced EV driver knows things like AC
New users see roaming apps with 800,000 charge points or more
So how will the Spark Alliance differ from standard roaming platforms
And how will you get to know with your values that you described
The Alliance is not meant to replace roaming platforms or MSPs
And we encourage our MSP partners to embrace the Alliance as a quality mark within their offerings
Out of the one million charge points across Europe – which should you choose for a great experience
If the MSP offers a filter or a special feature for Alliance sites
it can guide customers toward a good charging experience – just like the Dolby Atmos mark does when choosing a new TV
Maybe you and I are experienced drivers who’ve already gone through the growing pains
But we should really look at the next wave of EV adoption
They don’t have the same tolerance for the things that you and I have been going through
And this is where we want to build confidence in EV ownership
One big pain point for mass adoption is the pricing structure and payment
How will you try to solve within the alliance
if I charge via the Ionity App at a Fastned station
We could have decided to make this perfect and wait another year to get where we want to be
before people start traveling for their summer holidays
you are a German Ionity customer and you spend your holidays in the Netherlands
We don’t yet have the network density in the Netherlands that we aim for
we have a great partner that we recommend if you’re looking for a similar experience to what you’re used to as an Ionity customer
we direct you to their stations and display their locations
you’ll be redirected to their ad-hoc payment option
so that you’ll be charged directly through your Ionity account when using a Fastned station
we may be able to offer a favorable tariff for using that station via our app
it starts by making the stations visible as a recommendation
Isn’t that a bit too little too late with the Alliance
I wish we had had this vision years ago but now we’re coming together and taking fair responsibility
and I think that’s something truly unique — after all
We’re competing for the same locations and customers
We need to accelerate this transition to EVs
mission-driven and have found a very natural and complementary partnership
When it comes to complex pricing structures
for many people Ionity is part of the problem
Let’s take the pricing from Germany: 69 cents without registration
65 cents with registration and pay-as-you-go
49 cents for a simple subscription with a monthly basic fee and just 39 cents for a higher subscription
Ionity will certainly not get rich by charging a monthly fee of 11.99 euros
and the turnover with these customers is lower than with the ad-hoc price
We won’t even look at the prices from roaming apps at this point
How do you explain this to customers who are familiar with the daily prices displayed for petrol and diesel
it’s definitely a journey that we’re still on
Reaching the maturity and simplicity of a gas station network takes time
I’d argue it’s not a perfect one — there are still differences in fuel pricing that many people don’t fully understand
Why does it cost more to fuel up on the highway than just off it
pricing isn’t as straightforward as it seems
We are still a new industry with huge upfront investments that we need to try to recover
the best way all of us have found is through subscription models
And we try to keep them as limited as possible
we need to think about the economics of our stations
It’s no secret that the more frequent users we have returning to our network
And I envision a future where we can offer real-time
depending on low energy costs when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining
But that requires huge investments in our backends to enable deeper integration with the energy market
We acknowledge that it can still be overwhelming and confusing for many drivers
we believe we’ve already simplified things significantly
It’s not yet at the level of the gas station business
but they’ve been around for several decades
And they have very high station utilization
because there are still more ICE vehicles on the road than EVs
Ionity currently has around 750 locations in 24 countries
When Blackrock joined as a investor at the end of 2021
1,000 locations with 7,000 charging points were announced by 2025
Will you still manage to open 250 locations this year
We are currently on a pace of adding an average of 125 new locations per year to our network
While that doesn’t quite align with the goals we set a few years ago
it does match the current pace of EV adoption
It reflects the challenges that every CPO faces when deploying charge points and sites across Europe
These challenges vary from country to country
Permitting processes have only become more difficult over the years in many countries
We also faced supply chain issues during COVID
Plenty of challenges that have kept us from fully living up to that ambition
it’s the number of charging points we’re adding — not only through new sites
With our initial goal of pan-European coverage largely achieved
we’ve also been able to shift our focus toward urban areas
which will play a key role in our next phase of growth
Can you name a few countries where it’s easier to build charging stations
I assume Germany is one of the harder ones with our regulations and our energy market
the German market presents particular challenges
There are several hundred different operators in Germany
So we are constantly having to adjust to slightly different requirements
I think it’s no surprise that Germany is not known for fast permitting processes
it took only about three months to get a grid connection
It was known as one of the countries where deployment was fastest
it takes until 2028 or 2029 to get a grid connection
This is how rapidly the industry is changing
France is relatively convenient from a grid perspective
They operate their grid with just a handful of operators
the urban charging parks of Ionity are more on the outskirts of cities near the motorway
So how far into the cities do you want to go
urban expansion isn’t easy — land is even more scarce
so we need to find the sweet spots in every city
Where is a convenient place to spend 20 to 30 minutes
Our broader urban expansion strategy is still in development
and we are focused on finding the right spots
it’s been years since I was last in Dusseldorf
We’re not aiming to be located right in the Altstadt or on Königsallee
where we can combine charging with other activities
The sweet spot is being close to shopping malls or amenities
One is private drivers who don’t have access to home charging
meaning those relying primarily on public on-street AC charging infrastructure
we give this audience the opportunity to charge their EV once a week during their shopping activities
We need to find locations that make charging convenient for those drivers
The other user group includes professional drivers — such as taxi and delivery services — who can make a significant contribution to cleaner cities
we can give taxi drivers the confidence to switch to EVs – where they can quickly top up for ten minutes or sobetween customers
Ionity also announced their own fleet service
Why should fleet customers use the Ionity service when they only can use Ionity charging points
there are fleet providers with 800,000 plugs or more
We have developed our fleet service based on customer feedback
We received many requests from larger fleet owners who said
‘I love your network and would prefer to use only your network
And I think that is a testimony to the work that we’ve been doing
We’ve built a sizable network that many customers can rely on exclusively
we’ve created the fleet offer with special tariffs to make it easier for fleet owners
Instead of signing up for our consumer offer like our Power tariff — we offer them the convenience of a single monthly bill
So we’re helping them reduce their administrative effort
we have traditional MSP partners who are developing their own fleet offers as well which specifically serve customers who need AC charging or broader network access
Ionity has not yet made the prices for fleet customers public
There are two different tariffs which are – at least in Germany – quite clouse to the private customer offers
So the main difference is the monthly billing process
Monthly billing — and like any company that is in a commercial business
the larger the fleet and the higher the utilization
the better the tariffs we’ll be able to offer
That’s why we create an offer upon request and based on the individual needs of each customer
you were responsible for Tesla’ s Supercharger business in Europe and elsewhere
I’ll try to break it down into three points
Number 1: It’s still impressive what Tesla did in the early days when EVs were considered not to be a viable alternative for long-haul driving
Tesla built their own charging network to remove that concern
They had a mission – just like the OEMs behind Ionity when they founded the company
If we are serious about the transition to EVs
This similar mindset has brought us the Spark Alliance – we are competitors today
but we are united in our long-term mission
Tesla didn’t know back in 2012 if there would be growing demand for their EVs
That’s what we are all repeating today: to build our network ahead of the curve
Every CPO takes a risk in building a station in the hope of future demand
That leads us to number 3: Don’t think in terms of risks
Tesla doesn’t think in terms of risks; they think in terms of opportunities
And that is very uncomfortable for many companies
that is what you have to do: embrace the opportunity and act on it
And vice versa: what do you think Ionity is already doing better today
Our chargers have always been compatible with all EVs
starting with long cables to reach the charge port
we have been building a future-proof network
New 800V models coming to the market in 2025 are benefiting from our power promise that we made on day one

Beecher placed 12th as a team (20) and got a first-place finish out of senior Brooklyn Burdick in the 3,200 meters (11:45.00)
who said having fresh legs Friday helped her cut some time
“Our last meet was probably about a week ago
so I was feeling extra good coming into today,” she said
“I felt great the first probably 2,600 or so but the rest kind of took it out of me
But I knew I had to finish so I opened my stride and just kind of let the wind take me.”
Burdick is looking to finish her senior year as strong as she can
With this being the first season she has focused fully on track rather than splitting time with soccer
Beecher head coach David Smulson said that the extra dedication can help her wrap things up on a high note

Some physical spaces are "marked by tragedy or traumatic events to be forgotten or erased" (Lois et al.
When such spaces are located in desirable areas
there's a good chance they are at least partially demolished
This is what is currently happening to the 'emptied space' of The blue building in Tilburg
This article engages with its former location to discuss what its current (in)visibility might reveal about its post-digital meaning
a group of Tilburgers began their efforts to protect Tilburg's ugliest building — unofficially named 'The blue building' — from demolition (Het blauwe gebouw
as the local government raised various reasons for its destruction
With its historical utilisation by the city's social services
it did not fit the area's industrial railway heritage narrative
leading to "disturbance in the neighbourhood through break-ins and vandalism" (Gemeente Tilburg
The blue building's location would serve the local community better if it could be used for a different purpose
the ugliest building of Tilburg met its demise to make room for up to 150 apartments
The site of The blue building is an 'emptied space'
2023 shows the beginning of the demolition of The blue building
A few months before its planned demolition, Diggit Magazine published this article about digital interactions that focus on the building
which examined how interactions on Facebook and Instagram about the building's planned demolition relate to Tilburg's narrative of 'beautiful ugliness'
The article concluded by demonstrating how some of the more visible discourses about the building — which mostly focused on its aesthetic and historical value — rendered conflicting, disempowered discourses less visible
approximately two years after the start of the buildings' demolition
this follow-up article returns to its present-day empty site to revisit the issue of its demolition in relation to the site's contemporary emptiness
Heritage: Engaging in a political geography of heritagisation by Lois et al
describes the effects of the demolition of a prison in Madrid
and the consequent emptiness of its former location
Following a brief description of the study of Lois et al
an analysis of The blue building's (lack of) remnants links the notion of 'emptied space' to the post-digital importance of (in)visibility.
According to Lois et al. (2024), the development of the concept of 'Authorized Heritage Discourse' (Smith
2006) — 'AHD' — has produced "political readings of heritage" (Lois et al.
449) that focus on various dimensions of cultural heritage
as the construction of a space can massively impact the heritage that can become (in)visible in that particular space.
Despite the local community's and former prisoners' desire to use at least part of the prison "to recover the memory of political prisoners"
To demonstrate how the process of 'heritagisation' — "the process through which objects
places and practices are conceptualised as cultural heritage" (FutureLearn
(2024) discuss multiple sites that are considered 'heritage' by at least some members of the regarding local community
One of these sites is the former Carabanchel prison in Madrid
The prison was constructed in 1944 by prisoners of the Francoist regime and used as a political prison
before falling into disrepair after Spain became a democracy
the prison was almost completely demolished in 2008
"turning it into an empty space" (Lois et al.
Figure 2: A sign at the Carabanchel prison in Madrid highlights the local community's persuasion that the prison will be demolished for speculative purposes
and that they will not be allowed to preserve part of the prison as a symbol for the commemoration of the Francoist regime
the case of the former Carabanchel prison demonstrates how "the official memory" is "managed by the political elite or a dominant group to create a normative understanding of the past" (p
The physical 'elimination' of uncomfortable heritage
forgetfulness and erasure are key management strategies in this process
These strategies are particularly prominent in Spain
since "the state produced no explicit narrative of rupture with the dictatorship"
leading to policies that can be characterised as "inaction
and discomfort towards elements associated with the period" and the feeling that "any memory of repression should be consigned to oblivion" (Lois et al.
The 'void' — or 'emptied space' — gave visibility to the 'heritage power' of the nation-state
and necessitated the relocation of the 'prison memories' that had emerged
Though the eventual demolition of the prison largely "erased the possibilities of a physical place where different narratives could have been rearticulated in the form of museums
performances or any other scenario negotiated in its reconstruction" (Lois et al.
the transformation of the former prison into a 'voided space' also produced new opportunities for heritagisation
and necessitated the relocation of the 'prison memories' that had emerged as part of the anti-demolition protest of the local community and former prisoners.
its partially disembodied memories survive online
Figure 3: This picture shows the 'emptied space' of The blue building on November 8
2024 from approximately the same position as Figure 1
Before delving into the case of what used to be The blue building
it should be clear that The blue building cannot be linked to notions of dictatorial rule
false imprisonment and other gross human rights violations
easily be understood as a space "marked by tragedy or traumatic events to be forgotten or erased" (Lois et al.
This observation also emerged in the previous article about The blue building
in which the building's historical function as a social services building played a significant role in angry responses to efforts to protect the building: "[...] that some people start to proclaim that this is such a beautiful building [...] I know that many of them have never been unemployed and have never had to deal with this shit building."
For the Tilburgers that were (indirectly) affected by the collapse of Tilburg’s textile industry — starting from the 1950s — and the decline of other industrial activities
The blue building is a reminder of a period of shame
desperation and poverty that reverberates to this day
the building can be understood as 'dark heritage'
and its destruction as linked to the idea that the "need to remember often competes with the equally strong pressure to forget" (Sites of Conscience
it seems logical that many people would prefer not to be reminded of their city's historical decline and impoverishment by a building where they needed to 'beg' for social benefits from their local government.
Figure 4: This picture from 1978 shows The blue building when it was still in use
Like the former Carabanchel prison in Madrid
the empty space of The blue building also indexes the power of particular actors to decide which narratives about the past should receive attention
multiple documents from the municipality reveal the wish to construct a single
the area in which The blue building was located
In a document from 2018 about the "direction" of the Spoorzone
the point is raised that the Spoorzone should get a "new identity" that follows a "clear direction" (Bogdan & Van Broeck
ten "decisions that form the basis for the identity of the Spoorzone" are introduced
are: (1) "Reusing heritage for varying users and functions"
(2) "Preserving the industrial character: rough
(3) "Providing time and space for the development of a breeding ground"
and (5) "Becoming the focal point of the urban knowledge economy".
Though the first decision could have resulted in the survival of The blue building
all subsequent decisions herald its impossible position
Contrary to the other buildings in the Spoorzone
The blue building did not belong to the "rough
though" and "industrial" historical railway yard heritage
nor did it naturally ooze the creative-capitalist
future-oriented thinking that imbues the sphere of 'breeding grounds'
'start-ups' and 'urban knowledge economies'
The gap between a future filled with highly educated entrepreneurs and the memory of unemployed working class Tilburgers turned out to be irreconcilable.
which argues that poverty is often suffered in silence
and therefore aims to make 'hidden poverty' more perceptible by giving poor people a voice.
The fact that the location of The blue building is a voided space
if it was properly contextualized and operated
Similar to Tilburg's Quiet Community's attempts to transform quietness into noise and voice
The blue building's empty space could be set up to cry out its vacuity
will soon be filled by a building with approximately 150 'median-expensive' rental apartments (Gemeente Tilburg
Though housing shortages render the fate of The blue building understandable
it is clear that following the physical erasure of the possibility to use The blue building's location to give visibility to historical poverty
the potential for less affluent people to produce new memories in its former location is now also being negated
the social media account switched to encouraging people to memorise the physical appearance of the building — "RIP our blue building..
take a good look once more" — (see Figure 5)
before eventually commemorating the demolition of The blue building in its profile picture (see Figure 6)
Figure 5: This screenshot from a @keeptilburgugly Instagram post uses a screenshot of a news article about the demolition of The blue building
accompanied by the text: "Just a short while and than will never see this again
Figure 6: This screenshot from the @keeptilburgugly Instagram account shows that an illustration of the demolition of The blue building is used as a profile image
Both the profile picture of @keeptilburgugly and its social media post focus on demolition and aesthetics
rather than on the past function of the building
one of the comments underneath the post does appear to recall the building's relationship with unemployment and poverty: "[...] the best performance ever: the dissatisfied welfare recipient who
Though this incident may have occurred roughly as it is described on Instagram
its post-ironic characterisation as the 'best performance ever' demonstrates how the actions of the welfare recipients are jokingly remembered as entertaining
Despite the account's generally self-deprecating attitude
many of the relocated memories of The blue building don't include 'the poor'
The blue building has been transformed into the emblem of a particular narrative about the city of Tilburg
This narrative is marked by the celebration of the city's ugliness and inclination towards demolition
and by its mocking attitude regarding both these topics and other historically constructed characteristics of the city
but is mostly focused on other contextual factors
making it highly unlikely that the memories of disadvantaged Tilburgers can be relocated to its Instagram and Facebook pages
This brief analysis of the digital relocation of The blue building's memories reveals that there is one vital element Lois et al
(2024) fail to address: Even though online spaces can become havens for memories that no longer have a physical memorial place
these online spaces are far from devoid of power relations
Nation-states and local governments have the 'heritage power' to manage the physical memory of the past
while actors who understand the mechanisms and affordances of online platforms have the power to shape its digital counterpart.
Figure 7: This screenshot from the website kruikenemblemen.nl shows a fabric patch of The blue building that can be bought for 5,95 euros and sewn to an individual's carnival clothing — which should be a blue peasant's smock
In addition to the large amount of uptake @keeptilburgugly generates
other social media posts and digital practices clearly confirm the account's impact and resourcefulness
The profile image of the account is not merely an illustration
It also exists in the shape of a fabric patch that can be bought for 5,95 euros on a website that specialises in emblems that can be sewn to people's carnival costumes — the 'boerenkiel'
The digital popularity of @keeptilburgugly's perspective on The blue building is being commodified
This results in fresh physical visibility for the building
but only from the viewpoint of a particular narrative about the building — that of ugliness
and during a limited period of time: Shrovetide.
The texts that accompany the sales page of the fabric patch — "KEEP TILBURG UGLY" and "for the insiders" — signal that the message of the patch is indeed directed at a specific group of people that are 'in the know'
These are not necessarily the people who have physically experienced the interior of the building
The patch is meant for people who empathise with the post-ironic objective to 'keep Tilburg ugly'
and are therefore both concerned with the practice of demolition and with remembering The blue building's physical (ugly) appearance
The patch can be bought and worn to express 'membership' of this particular community (Blommaert & Varis
which consequently incorporates The blue building into its intangible heritage and identity discourse
Figure 8: This screenshot from the website kruikenemblemen.nl shows a (most probably) fake review of Elon Musk with the review text: "Fantastic
hybrid and next level emblemen of Kruikenstad
concerns the reviews that are shown on the bottom of the webpage
feature Elon Musk — a highly unlikely person to celebrate carnival in Tilburg — and William II of the Netherlands
Musk is presented as finding the fabric patches "fantastic"
the fake review reveals the website's mockery — like @keeptilburgugly — and its satirical attitude towards tech billionaires and entrepreneurs
who use empty rhetoric like 'hybrid' and 'next level' to communicate their transient excitement
the use of Musk highlights the websites' awareness of its own position in a networked collection of online spaces that are dominated by major tech corporations
and the consequent need to conform to the dominant discourses and mechanisms of the internet
By looking at The blue building from the perspective of the former Carabanchel prison
this article has managed to foreground some potentially new perspectives about both cases
Every transformation of a potential heritage site into an 'emptied space' reveals which actors hold 'heritage power'
and can thus demonstrate something about the (in)visibility and (lack of) resources of the heritage community that might have been linked to the site
Though their memories can be relocated to novel
and without novel challenges for people who are less resourceful
visibility is granted to the narratives that are favoured by the people that have the resources to ensure they are heard
as they are able to take advantage of the algorithms and affordances of online platforms
A physical place where stories about unemployment and impoverishment could have been told
is inherited by apartments for the 'median-rich'
the commodified discourse of post-ironic beautiful ugliness
and the celebration of Tilburg's novel identity
There is literally no space for an ugly building that reminds people of the historically induced poverty of an ugly city

Maryland’s Cannabis Administration Director, Will Tilburg, is set to depart his position in December after leading the state through a transition to an adult-use cannabis market. Governor Wes Moore announced the news
praising Tilburg’s leadership and dedication to the state
who has served as the agency’s director since its establishment last year
oversaw a smooth transition from a medical-only market to one open to adults
Maryland achieved a remarkable milestone of exceeding $1.1 billion in cannabis sales in its first full year
One of Tilburg’s significant accomplishments was the successful implementation of a licensing round exclusively for social equity applicants
This initiative resulted in 75% of new licenses being awarded to minority-owned firms
making Maryland’s cannabis industry one of the most diverse in the nation
Governor Moore expressed his gratitude for Tilburg’s contributions
““I am grateful to Will for his more than six years of dedicated service to our state
and for making Maryland a national model to show how states can transition into an adult-use cannabis market in an efficient and equitable way.”
Tilburg expressed his own gratitude for the opportunity to serve the state and acknowledged the hard work of the Maryland Cannabis Administration team
stakeholders and legislators in building the cannabis industry
While the decision to step down was difficult
he believes that the agency is well-positioned for continued success
A search for Tilburg’s successor is currently underway, led by the Governor’s Appointments Office. More information on the search process can be found on the Maryland Cannabis Administration website

NETHERLANDS – Florence Brunelle captured her first career gold medal
while Courtney Sarault made her much anticipated return to the podium during the final day of ISU Short Track World Tour racing in the Netherlands
Que.) cruised to victory in the women’s 500m to bring home the first World Tour gold medal of her career in an individual distance
The 21-year-old stopped the clock at 43.141

A two-time World Junior Champion in the distance
Brunelle had won 500m silver in Beijing and Korea earlier this season
the first senior-level medals of her young career
but it’s still important to make it happen
but what I’m most happy about is the way I achieved it
Lots of things have happened in the last month that could have destabalized me
I knew that what would be most beneficial for me was to stay in the moment.”
N.B.) grabbed the lead at the midway point of the women’s 1500m final but was overtaken by Belgium’s Hanne Desmet from the outside with two laps remaining
Desmet was penalized for contacting Italian Arianna Fontana earlier in the race

The 24-year-old Canadian crossed the finish line in 2:27.388 and was joined on the podium by Italy’s Elisa Confortola (2:27.406) and Corinne Stoddard of the United States (2:27.525)
The win marked Sarault’s first individual distance medal of the season
having missed the two World Tour stops in Montreal due to a concussion and coming close with three A Final appearances during the competitions in China and Korea
so I knew that I only had two big efforts today and I was willing to really fight for it
I think I did the perfect race to get myself in the right spot at the right time
and give myself the best chance by letting go of everything that has happened in the past.”
reigning world champion William Dandjinou (Montreal
Que.) was penalized and given a yellow card for the second day in a row after making a dangerous pass in the final that took out two fellow competitors
The day ended in controversy for the men’s relay squad of Roussel

The officials deemed there was joint responsibility and didn’t hand out any penalties

On a roundabout in the city of Tilburg there is an unusual piece of art
Artist John Körmeling designed this structure to rotate slowly around a circular track on the roundabout
It was completed in 2008 but designed to resemble Dutch houses from the '60s and '70s in style
The building looks stationary at any point in time
but if you returned to it after a few hours you will find it facing a completely different part of the road
Lights inside the building turn on at night
The house is not accessible to the public or inhabitable
anyone can see it from the side of the roundabout
Sometimes the house does not turn due to malfunction

late SLAYER guitarist] songs,' because although I love Jeff songs and he was such a big part of my life
but there's so many fucking faceless haters on the Internet
All material for "From Hell I Rise" was written by the 60-year-old SLAYER guitarist
who was accompanied during the recording sessions by the rest of his solo band
consisting of drummer Paul Bostaph (SLAYER),bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH),guitarist Phil Demmel (formerly of MACHINE HEAD) and Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL) on vocals
Helming the sessions at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles last year was producer Josh Wilbur
In an interview with Martha Wingen of the Bleeding Metal podcast
King was asked to name "the most important message" on "From Hell I Rise"
He said: "I don't know that there's a message on the album
I think a lot of people are born into a religious belief based on being handed down from their parents
What I like to present to people is ideas that if that makes them question what they believe
what they were taught… I think everybody should make up their own mind
Asked if he was able to realize something in his music he always wanted to do
my influences were influences 40 years ago and they still are my influences
I didn't have anything that I wanted to achieve that necessarily I hadn't achieved
I just wanna make up the next batch of music for people that I think are my fans
because SLAYER has a gigantic amount of fans
and if I make 95 percent of them happy with what I do
Pressed about whether there is anything he wants to achieve musically and personally with his solo project
Just keep putting out music that translates between me writing it and the fans liking it
which is a lot closer than I expected — I was told today our first show is in
But I'm looking forward to playing with the guys
we've never actually played together all at once
and then I gotta fly to the West Coast Sunday and start rehearsing
but that's what I look most forward to these days
is getting in the rehearsal room and then finally getting on stage and showing the new band to everybody."
In a separate interview with with France's Loud TV, Kerry said about the prospect of launching a solo career: "It's kind of funny, right? It's kind of funny to have 40 years in this business at all, let alone be starting a new band. It's funny, our first show in Europe is gonna be on my 60th birthday at the only venue I've ever canceled in my life, which is super ironic."
Referencing the fact that SLAYER hasn't released a new studio album since 2015 and hasn't played any live shows since 2019, King added: "I'm obviously not done. I've got lots more music and lots more things to say, a lot more people to piss off and argue about. So, let's start this new endeavor now. Move on."
King told Rolling Stone about the decision to call the band KERRY KING: "It was going to be KING'S REIGN for a long time, which is really cool. But even with that one, I went to the guys, like, 'I'm not a vain dude. I don't want my name to be a part of it.' We talked about BLOOD REIGN for a while, but it didn't work. Every time I came up with anything remotely cool, it was taken by some obscure band in Eastern Europe. It became KERRY KING because I love that logo."
King said the album is about "various religious topics, some war entries, heavy stuff, punky stuff, doomy stuff, and spooky stuff, with Herculean speeds achieved," adding, "If you've ever liked any SLAYER throughout any part of our history, there's something on this record that you'll get into, be it classic punk, fast punk, thrash, or just plain heavy metal."
King added there's more to come, too. "Even with a record in the can, I've still got so many songs that need to be finished," he said. "This is what I know how to do…number one being music, number two being metal. It's been a part of my life for 40 years, and I'm nowhere near being done."
KERRY KING will be special guest on the upcoming LAMB OF GOD/MASTODON North American "Ashes Of Leviathan" co-headline tour. The six-week run will launch on July 19 in Grand Prairie, Texas and will wrap on August 31 in Omaha, Nebraska.

A fire in a student housing complex in Tilburg during the early hours of Monday morning may have been caused by a short circuit in an air fryer, several students told Brabants Dagblad
The police are still investigating the cause
The fire broke out in an apartment on the top floor of the five-story building on Verbernelaan
which houses mainly international students
Many students were in the communal areas when the smoke alarms started going off
Others were woken by the alarms or by their neighbors banging on their doors
The fire department evacuated around 70 students
but I quickly put on some clothes and grabbed my wallet and phone,” student Leonard from Germany told the newspaper
I saw people standing around me with pets in their arms
It was cold and some were only wearing slippers and a bathrobe
Students in the adjacent complex took pity on their evacuated peers and let them into their rooms
“We spread them out over our apartments so that they could spend the night here,” 25-year-old Kevin told the newspaper
The firefighters extinguished the blaze after about an hour
and third floors were allowed to return to their homes
Half of the residents of the fourth floor could also go back
The apartment where the fire started burnt out completely
Several other apartments on the fifth floor are uninhabitable due to smoke and soot damage
There is also water damage to several apartments on the fourth floor
Housing corporation WonenBreburg arranged alternative housing in the area for the students who can’t go home yet
It expects that most of the apartments will be cleaned and liveable again by the end of the week
“We are now walking around with a team and talking to residents
but fortunately most of them are doing well.”

Israeli universities are intertwined with the violence in Gaza through the army
says a special committee of Tilburg University
That’s why the university should stop collaborating with them
It’s up to individual scholars themselves to decide whether they continue collaborating with Israeli researchers
The university shouldn’t send students or staff on exchange to Israel
should any Israelis want to come to Tilburg despite the cutting of the ties
the university must welcome them with open arms: after all
The committee states the universities are ‘intertwined’ with ‘the government
The universities are also not doing enough to distance themselves from the violence
they make their expertise available to the Israeli government’s policies and actions in Gaza.’ Tel Aviv University
is investing in drones ‘currently being used by the Israeli army in Gaza’
the studies that Tilburg University scholars conduct with Israeli partners have little to do with this
ageing and colon cancer and are paid for by the European Union
What the suspension of the collaboration should look like in concrete terms remains unclear
The committee explicitly doesn’t look at the partnerships from the perspective of academic freedom
other values also play a role in moral considerations
At the University of Amsterdam (UvA), around eighty teaching and other staff have gone on strike for four days
They demand that the collaboration with Israeli institutions be suspended and that the rules for protests at the university be relaxed
The education and research chapter of the Dutch Federation of Trade Unions (FNV) represents the staff members and had issued an ultimatum to the UvA that expired on Friday
The board is alleged to have refused to seriously negotiate about the demands with the union
‘That is how democratic decision-making works at the UvA.’

Suspend collaboration with academic partners in Israel and halt the exchange of students and staff with these universities
This is the core recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Partnerships
whose report has been submitted to Tilburg University
Committee Chair Nicola Jägers stated: ‘The university has a moral responsibility.’
The committee highlighted the significant risk of Israeli partner institutions being involved in the war in Gaza
It also concluded that these institutions fail to distance themselves from human rights violations or explicitly condemn them
After five months of research—described by Jägers as ‘surgical precision work’ — the report has been made public
The investigation was prompted by widespread pro-Palestinian demonstrations
These demonstrations frequently called for a boycott of Israeli universities
the Tilburg University requested independent advice from the committee
The recommendation to suspend collaboration is based on the current circumstances and does not necessarily imply a permanent halt
Jägers explained: ‘If the situation changes
it can be reassessed.’ She emphasized that many Israeli universities are historically closely linked to the country’s defense sector
While collaboration between academic institutions and defense entities is not inherently problematic
it becomes concerning when there are indications of severe human rights violations
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) stated in an interim ruling that Israel might be guilty of genocide
the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants against figures including Prime Minister Netanyahu
who cited the core values of academia: the pursuit of truth and integrity
‘Israeli partner universities can be seen as witnesses and bystanders to the events in Gaza
One would expect these universities to uphold these core values when faced with severe human rights violations.’
‘Because we have a relationship with these partners
we too are bystanders—and we bear a moral responsibility to act.’
also means that students and staff from Tilburg University should no longer go to Israeli partner institutions
Israeli students and staff should still be welcomed at Tilburg
‘Academic freedom is highly valued here
That doesn’t always appear to be the case with our Israeli partners.’
The committee also advised raising awareness among staff about the ethical dimensions of partnerships
by providing a quick scan to assess whether a collaboration might be problematic
Researchers want to contribute positively to society
The report was eagerly anticipated, with some criticizing the time it took to produce. ‘I have been waiting patiently for five months for the decision of the Advisory Committee on Partnerships,’ wrote Professor Philip Paiement in an opinion piece
‘While I support the committee’s work
I worry that it delays and dilutes the university’s investigation into its Israeli partners.’
Jägers acknowledged that the research took time
‘Terrible events occur daily in Gaza
the investigation required ‘appropriate diligence,’ which Jägers described as a hallmark of a university
‘The university lacked a human rights framework; we started from scratch,’ Jägers explained
‘We first had to establish a foundation
I find it commendable that the university’s Executive Board gave us this task and allowed us to carry it out with full independence.’
It is now up to the university’s Executive Board to decide on the recommendations
though this does not mark the end of their involvement
In a world with increasingly frequent conflicts
The Advisory Committee on Partnerships consists of Professors Wim Dubbink

‘The Executive Board’s response to the recommendation to suspend ties with Israeli partner universities is infuriating,’ writes alumnus Omer Omer
‘The lack of concrete commitment voids our university’s core values of their meaning at precisely the time they should be upheld.’
‘Ours is a university to be proud of!’ Says Wim van de Donk
I can say that Tilburg University’s response to the genocide in Gaza has quickly eroded my pride in my alma mater
How can I be proud of a university that has not only abandoned its students
but its core principles too in a time of global crisis
and courageous—are supposed to reflect what Tilburg University stands for
sincerity and accountability (caring); creating safe spaces for dialogue (connection); transcending boundaries and developing critical insight (curiosity); and
most notably ‘daring to take … bold decisions … stop things … [and] enter into difficult conversations.’
In light of the unfolding genocide in Gaza
I have witnessed the Executive Board (‘the Board’) of Tilburg University warp
From a jaundiced attitude to campus protests to piecemeal bureaucratic gestures
he Board has made it clear that our university’s core values mean nothing
This is the impression that I and many fellow alumni, students and staff hold of the Response by the Board following to the advice by the Advisory Committee on Collaborations
the Committee highlighted a close link between Tilburg University’s partner universities and the Israeli military
for which these partners ‘[do] not take a sufficiently critical stance.’ This raises a moral imperative to cut ties with such institutions not committed to human rights and the rule of law in their education
Tilburg University’s response has been slow
passive and abstracted—neglecting not only its SWANA (South West Asia and North Africa) students
and alumni but also the wider concerned community
The Executive Board’s Response begins with a passive appeal to hope as the University supposedly monitors the current ceasefire–the same one that violated to the tune of over 100 killed and 800 injured Palestinians and continued humanitarian aid obstructions in Gaza
cannot overlook the lack of concrete steps the University has taken to stop contributing to the conflict in the first place
The vacant virtue-signaling is reiterated via the ‘important role’ envisioned for universities in the peace process
Without severing activities that contribute to the conflict we would not be facilitating future peace
Without taking accountability such a commitment to the future cannot be taken in earnest
the language employed in the Response is steered by dishonest framing and a lack of moral
is ‘horrified’ by the violence ‘initiated … by Hamas.’ Such framing:
The Executive Board lauds its own commitment to ‘do justice’ to the Committee’s advice along these morally and legally ambiguous lines
the Committee had outlined concrete steps for the Board:
the Board felt that the ‘strong message’ required by the Commitee against our partner universities means to first allow them to condemn these atrocities—the ones they directly contribute to
concrete calls to action and opted instead to open ‘dialogue … as soon as possible’ when it could have done so at any point over the past sixteen months
The Board notes that it would be ‘difficult’ to continue a collaboration that involves (direct) involvement in human rights violations
since the Committee did not find such evidence in the University’s current collaborative projects their proximity to the Israeli military is apparently a cause for concern
the Board tolerates indirect involvement with partners that the Commitee considers ‘bear co-responsibility for the alleged violations’—thereby accepting institutional ties to institutional gross human rights violations
This should not be tolerated any further
In keeping with the ‘precautionary principle’ that the Commitee recommended
a direct causal link between Tilburg University’s collaborations and the human rights violations distorts the principle’s very purpose
Where threats of harm … exist, scientific uncertainty will not be used as a reason to postpone the taking of measures for the protection of human life or health or the environment. – Jaye Ellis & Alison FitzGerald
The basic premise is to suspend a policy without delay if there is a likelihood of contributing to harm
Even though the Commitee did not find evidence of direct involvement by way of our collaborations
the indirect harm of legitimizing and advancing scientific research at an institution that does directly contribute to gross human rights violations cannot be escaped
any further cause for research or due diligence regarding this indirect contribution cannot wait until our partner institutions ‘convincingly distance themselves from … the current Israeli government.’
The Executive Board’s response to the Advisory Committee’s recommendation to suspend ties with Israeli partner universities is infuriating and absurd
The Committee provided a clear path to rebuilding trust with concerned students
yet the Board’s refusal to act exposes a blatant disregard for its own core values and a failure of moral responsibility
The Executive Board pretends to ‘care’ only when concerns can be dismissed with thoughts and prayers
becomes ‘curious’ about the future only by ignoring present harm
and claims ‘courage’ only when action is easy to sell
tolerates critical thinking only when palatable
and offers empty gestures until it can be even less courageous in the future
Rector Van de Donk— this is not a university to be proud of
The Executive Board’s Response to the Committee’s recommendations is disingenuous at best and disparaging overall
The lack of concrete commitment voids our university’s core values of their meaning at precisely the time they should be upheld
to brush up on your ‘4 C’s’ and make Tilburg University an alma mater I can truly be proud of

Dozens of protesters gathered outside a Tesla dealership in Tilburg on Saturday
voicing opposition to the prominent role Tesla CEO Elon Musk has taken within the U.S
was held at the Tesla Delivery Center on Asteriastraat
with around 80 to 100 participants taking part
The protest focused on the drastic budget cuts Musk is pushing through, which the demonstrators argue are undermining democracy. Holding various signs, the protesters accused Musk of supporting actions that they believe threaten democratic institutions, Omroep Brabant reports.
Some signs depicted Musk in a Nazi uniform
referencing past controversial moments where Musk appeared to make the Hitler salute
Other signs read "Don't buy a swasticar" and "You cannot buy humanity." The protest was reportedly brief and peaceful
particularly regarding Musk's actions related to government policies and budget cuts they claim could destabilize democratic processes

Three security guards at a coffeeshop in Tilburg narrowly escaped injury after an explosive device was thrown at them early Saturday morning. The device, which contained a flammable liquid, failed to detonate.
The guards were seated in front of the coffeeshop on Gasthuisring when they noticed something being thrown in their direction. One of the guards was struck by the object. The guards immediately fled, but the device did not explode.
According to police, had the explosive gone off, it could have caused significant damage. The Dutch Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in and safely dismantled the device.
The guards filed a report with authorities, claiming attempted manslaughter. This attack marks the latest in a series of incidents targeting the coffeeshop. In total, the establishment has been attacked eight times, leading to the temporary closure of the business on six occasions. Due to its 24-hour security measures, the coffeeshop was allowed to reopen in November 2024.
Following the attack, Tilburg’s mayor, Theo Weterings, announced that the coffeeshop would be closed for one month for safety reasons. A spokesperson for the municipality stated that further actions may be considered after evaluating the situation.
