After getting home from work as a Dorsch Ford collision estimator on April 1 Tony Brink of Green Bay felt like driving to pick up dinner rather than getting it delivered Brink is grateful he chose to drive his work van because he may not have made it home alive in a different vehicle Brink was waiting to turn left at the intersection of Velp and Wilson avenues determined there was plenty of distance between him and the oncoming cars and started to turn that car was right on top of me," Brink said The driver of the red Dodge Challenger that struck Brink's car would later tell police he was driving between 70 and 80 mph, according to a criminal complaint. The driver, Jason Wright Jr. of Green Bay, was arrested and charged with second-degree reckless injury Brink said he thought he was OK besides a sore neck and he tried to get out to check on the other car and my leg is pinned between the engine bay and the driver's seat and it's facing the opposite direction," Brink said The engine bay crushed Brink's shin bones and he also suffered whiplash and nerve damage along with Wright and Wright's passenger who suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized as of April 18 the worst of Brink's injuries were to his leg Had he been driving his personal car or his wife's car the engine bay would have been closer to his core "If I just look at the number of vehicles on the road that could have withstood that impact and have somebody at least fall out of the vehicle alive," Brink said "There weren't many out there at that point that that could have happened to." It's a thought Brink's sister, Dana Marcek, said she struggled to move past. It's also the reason behind the title she gave to her brother's GoFundMe: "Lucky To Be Alive." and that is one of the reasons why I put lucky to be alive," Marcek said Marcek started the GoFundMe to help Brink and his wife which she said the hospital estimated could be up to a year The couple's expenses have continued to pile up while Brink has been unable to work and Kristy has taken off extra days to help him with his lack of mobility Brink will need ongoing physical therapy and chiropractic work and will likely need special shoes and inserts as his legs are no longer an even length From messages and comments on Facebook to donations "People just reached out with so much affection and and care," Brink said "I don't know some of these people and they're going out of their way to send me a little friendship … People have been incredibly kind and generous That other people's bad choices could impact someone innocent to this extent Brink said he just wants the driver "to get his life together" and "do good going forward." "That made it easier for me to let the anger go," Marcek said "These were the cards I was dealt," Brink said "I'm gonna play the best hand I can play with them." keys spots they hope can start a revitalization of the busy Velp Avenue corridor.  City planner Mark Lyons said finding new uses for land north of the roundabouts at Military Avenue and Atkinson Drive an industrial site on the north side of the 1200 block of Velp Avenue and a largely vacant property on Locust Street would be the initial focus of a long-term plan to redevelop a two-mile long stretch between Mather Street and Military Avenue "These are transformative areas," Lyons said would like to see change and where they believe change will do well."  RELATED: Eyesore west-side thoroughfare needs upgrade The largely industrial and commercial area on the street's north side has declined over the years to the extent that it is now considered an eyesore by many of those living in the neighborhoods to the south and east of the proposed redevelopment area.  the plan lays calls for the city to work with developers to attract new businesses to the area Possibilities include a grocery store and other retailers office buildings, condos or other residential development "The key is that this is all mixed-use," he said He added while the project is meant to revamp the aging — and in a lot of places property on the 1200 block of Velp Avenue offers the opportunity for new companies to move in and reinforce the road's long-running industrial reputation developers and private investors need to jump on board.  economic development project and program manager said there are already developers interested in the area who see its potential.  "It's not surprising because with a plan like this they're able to present it to their bank and that tells a better story," she said Lyons said initial redevelopment efforts could start as soon as 2018 but the plan looks out 20 years and more.  The draft plan was approved last week by both the city's Economic Development Authority and Plan Commission The City Council will consider it on Tuesday Those who worked on the plan are confident it will receive approval.  "I think enough of the council have heard about the plan and what it will do for the area," Lyons said "It's similar to the process of what's been done on University Avenue." BAY (WLUK) -- Green Bay police are searching for a missing and endangered man who was last seen walking on the city's west side two days ago was reported to have been walking in the area of Velp Avenue and Atkinson Drive on Sunday He was last seen wearing a black jacket with a hood approximately 167 pounds with gray hair and hazel eyes the outside temperature has been around zero If you have information on his whereabouts Tens of thousands of vehicles pass through Lineville Road The two-lane thoroughfare was designed at a time when the region was sparse a sentiment that's made the decision to improve the road "one of the easiest projects we've ever had," said Mike Piacenti operations manager for Brown County Highway Department Since March 2020, Brown County has been making plans to expand the major traffic artery from two to four lanes wide to reflect the area's rapid development The Brown County Highway Department signed a $9.5 million contract to improve County M over a two-year period in the villages of Howard and Suamico with the goal of finishing the road project in October 2025 Michels Road & Stone in Brownsville is the the prime contractor Eric Adamski, the north central construction manager at JT Engineering Inc, which is overseeing the Lineville Road Project, said construction will get underway Monday, from Rockwell Lane to Belmont Road The plan is to first focus on the west end of the project The work zone will be closed to through traffic The 2024 construction plan will extend from Belmont Road to the railroad crossing west of Velp Avenue From April to July traffic will be restricted from Belmont Road to a portion of Cardinal Lane to allow for access to Lineville Intermediate School parking lot which will remain open until the end of the school year from north of the Lineville/Cardinal roundabout to just south of Garden Lane Once Phase 1 is complete, which is projected to happen by the end of July, the next phase begins stretching from Cardinal Lane to the railroad crossing west of Velp Avenue Only local traffic will be accessible during this time the Cardinal Lane roundabout will be under construction and closed to through traffic Lineville Road traffic will be limited to a single west-bound lane between Condor Lane and Velp Avenue with local access maintained from adjacent side roads for any properties within the closed roadway section The 2025 construction will extend from Velp Avenue to U.S according to a press release from Brown County Highway Department But an early look of the two phases puts construction starting in March 2025, with the closure of the Velp/Lineville roundabout. Local access will be maintained from adjacent roads. Additionally, the railroad crossing will be reconstructed during both phases of 2025 The second phase of 2025 will limit Lineville Road traffic to a single east-bound lane between Cornell Road and Velp Avenue How many days per week will construction take up?Piacenti said he anticipates road construction will take place five days a week from 7 a.m they'll run into six or even seven days a week depending on where they are in their schedule How will this impact my commute?Piacenti said that drivers should pay attention to detour signs Drivers should pad their commute with an extra 20 to 30 minutes to ensure they get to their destinations on time "I wouldn't say this is going to cause hours of delay because there are detours set up," Piacenti said it's going to take you anywhere from five to 10 minutes to get around the detour plus figuring out the new way to get to your business Will it be worth the grief?Lineville Road causes its own grievances as a busy traffic artery with only two lanes to contain the traffic Congestion makes it hard to access the businesses "The Lineville corridor has outgrown the road as far as businesses are concerned," Piacenti said it's going to be hard to attract new business to that area residents will be able to enjoy a multi-use pedestrian trail on the north side of Lineville Road cyclists and walkers can travel in a non-motorized capacity Piacenti and Adamski encourage drivers to check the Lineville Road Project live updates page, either via X, formerly Twitter, at www.twitter.com/JTLineville or its website at jt-engineering.com/projects/cth-m-lineville Natalie Eilbert covers mental health issues for USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin. the combined award and framing business now accounts for about 50% of sales Screen printing and embroidery make up the balance “Equipment and products are always changing,” Gage said “We listen to customers to give them what they want and need Items like trophies have dropped off through the years Gage said his niche is being a one-stop shop for organizations and corporations for awards Some competitors specialize in awards and others in screen printing “Items like garments are pretty competitive but there are many things we create in-house that you can’t get anywhere else," he said A lot of communication is done between the sales team and the customer before an order goes to production and finally to the customer Our award orders leave here in a custom box and for the most part The proof that the company’s attention to providing service and quality is working is evidenced by a long list of large major corporations who are loyal customers Sales are handled by a local and outside team with 29 employees in-house Although Gage faces the same hiring challenges as most companies his biggest problem is replacing employees due to retirement “One of our employees has been here for 38 years and we recently lost one to retirement after 40 years The majority have been here for between 15 and 25 years,” he said He says that he encourages employees to take ownership like they would do if they owned the company “I want them to take the initiative in their roles and empower them,” he added the employees are vital in supporting his roles as president "my strengths are my tenure and years of knowledge That was not a strength for me in the past I feel the world has jumped two years ahead of me and I need to adapt I do not want to stand in the way of productive progress or bring old-school thinking to the new table of procedures.” The new thinking is what has him talking to SCORE mentors and planning a new website “My business plan is a work in progress at this time we as a team are reevaluating the direction we want to take the company That reevaluation will include being more active in setting written goals and strategies he plans to have goals in place that set a future direction for Global he wants his team to be in a position where the company can be handed off to the next leader “We don’t want to grow so fast that we can’t handle things We just want a steady growth and are taking steps to toward that.” he believes that success involves continually looking at industry trends and anticipating demand He says every entrepreneur needs to pivot because there is always room for improvement he has the experience to understand that and has advice for other would-be entrepreneurs “Do your due diligence on what your product If you are innovative and have a new product or idea But if you are creating and selling the same products as another company then buying out an existing company that has made its mark and has potential would be my choice Why reinvent the wheel in you can buy it spinning already Tina Dettman-Bielefeldt is co-owner of DB Commercial Real Estate in Green Bay and past district director for SCORE BROWN COUNTY (WLUK) -- A stretch of Velp Avenue in the Green Bay area closed Thursday for a new construction project Velp will be closed from Riverview Drive to Melody Drive for about two months Construction's expected to be completed by mid-October "We'll have work that's pushing into early October," said Eric Gwidt I-41 project manager Eric Gwidt says after six years you'll see less orange as the next few months go by "The light's at the end of the tunnel," he said Velp Avenue and the interchange will include new pavement roundabouts and the ability to handle more traffic out to like 20 to 30 years from now," Gwidt said it's hard to miss those orange and white barrels dotting the interstate that passes through Brown County Construction in Brown County includes a 14-mile stretch of highway from Orange Lane to Lineville Road "[It] seems like a long time and obviously it is in a time sense to build this amount of project in that amount of time is actually pretty good because we're building it under traffic which is difficult to do," Gwidt said Flyover ramps have pushed their way into the Green Bay area skyline and last year and a portion of U.S Gwidt says it took a lot of dedication from crews as they worked through all four seasons.Click here to see detour routes. "We were working through most winters that most people wouldn't work through like two years ago when we had that frigid winter," Gwidt said The overall cost of the project in Brown County is around $992 million and drivers can expect most of the major 41 constructure to be completed by late fall Eight people are homeless as a result of a Friday night house fire The Green Bay Metro Fire Department was called at 7:30 p.m to reports of smoke and flames at a duplex at 947-949 Velp Ave Battallion Chief Mike Vanden Avond said a young child first noticed the fire and alerted adults who were able to get everyone out of the building safely "The child was sleeping at the time and was alerted by smoke and found the fire in the kitchen," Vanden Avond said "They then alerted their downstairs neighbors." Vanden Avond said it is not clear how many residents were home at the time of the fire He said the source of the fire has not been determined and the state Fire Marshal's Office will invetigate He said one  resident said the stove is the likely source of the fire No estimate of the cost of damage was available —sleduc@greenbay.gannett.com 'Like' Shelby Le Duc on Facebook and follow her on Twitter @pgshelbyleduc and Instagram @shelbyleduc22 GREEN BAY - One of our colleagues took note of a couple things happening on Velp Avenue these days A new coffee shop has opened and a car wash is in the works a few blocks apart on Velp.  If you're in search of a pick-me-up on your way into Green Bay from the Howard-Suamico area owners Mark and Catherine Semrau have opened their fourth LaJava Roasting House, at 1250 Velp Ave If you don't know LaJava specialty coffee roaster the Semraus founded here in Green Bay in 2002. Their three other locations are at 430 Cardinal Lane in Howard 2300 Lineville Road in Suamico and 2422 W The Semraus will host a grand opening celebration for the new location beginning at 10 a.m It will include a ribbon-cutting with the Greater Green Bay Chamber a reception and a 10 percent discount for all customers that day.  That 10 percent off deal is good at all four LaJava locations removing the easternmost part of its building.  The demo will make room for a new car wash being added to the store Owner Kurt Boulanger said the car wash should open by the end of January He also said the car wash isn't the only improvements customers should be looking for going forward but you'll just have to wait and see what else he has in store.  The northbound entrance to Interstate 41/U.S 141 at Velp Avenue will close Monday and will not re-open until October the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported Thursday The closure is required to reconstruct the I-41 on-ramp from Velp Avenue as part of the ongoing upgrade of I-41 through Brown County The DOT has designated detour routes for I-41 motorists and northbound U.S I-41 motorists will be directed to the interchange at Shawano Avenue and Lineville Road 141 traffic should take Atkinson Drive north and then follow northbound Interstate 43 to I-41/U.S For more information on WisDOT construction projects, visit www.us41wisconsin.gov 41/Velp Avenue/I-43 interchange will be closed this year for construction but the closure of a section of Velp Avenue itself is still 18 months off "It's a good time to start thinking about what you want to do for business signing," project manager Eric Gwidt told business representatives Tuesday morning during an update meeting at the state Department of Transportation (DOT) office on West Mason Street A meeting for the general public was held later Tuesday Work this year will focus on building various ramps connecting the three roadways 41 is scheduled to close to all traffic for 60 days beginning in August 2016 Gwindt said they had the option of closing Velp for two months and getting the work done or keeping the street open for traffic and taking a year to complete construction but it will be an annoyance for drivers and businesses near the highway It doesn't look like this will affect us that much," said Brian Healy of Woodman's Food Market which is nearer the Shawano Avenue interchange completed last year The village of Howard will coordinate the installation of signs advising drivers how to get around the construction Businesses can provide 18-inch by 24-inch signs to be included on the larger informational signs "Logos are more recognizable than words ever will be," said Geoffrey Farr "We will put (signs) wherever they want them to be." DOT is staging construction to minimize traffic impacts but Gwidt said they are helped by much of the work being over swamp and unoccupied areas "It's easier in that there are not local streets (such as there were around the Shawano Avenue interchange) and there's a lot less local traffic," he said The first project to kick off this construction season will be the northbound 41 to southbound 43 ramp That work will begin in March and wrap up in September Detailed information can be found on the department's social media pages "We really recommend you sign up on Twitter and Facebook sites or join our email list," said Mark Kantola Gwidt said they hope to have signs switched over by the end of the year The interstate will stretch from the Illinois border to the I-43 interchange —
