Trumpet player Max Karreman shared mind-blowing footage of his marching band K&G Leiden playing Metallica’s Master of Puppets—on a brick road no less—during Streetparade Vlaardingen 2024 and a heavy metal classic combined to bring the house (or street) down The State Secretary for Youth and Prevention has said that he wants screening of foster parents to be more regular and stricter he stated in a debate in the Tweede Kamer about the seriously abused foster girl in Vlaardingen Karremans and fellow state secretary Teun Struycken spoke to the girl’s biological mother and seemed visibly shaken when discussing the matter in the lower house of Dutch parliament Karremans is pushing for continuous controls of whether foster parents have a criminal record and wants previous findings as foster parents also to be taken into account The VVD party member added that he feels there should be checks from time to time to see whether foster parents are still suitable Struycken seemed visibly upset by the meeting that the two state secretaries had with the abused girl’s mother an emotional meeting for us both,” Struycken said during the parliamentary debate about the issue The woman had already signaled that she felt her child was being abused She is happy that she is now believed and that her suffering is recognized Struycken said that he sees the importance of "sitting across from someone creating calm and giving the person the feeling of being heard Because that shows what is lacking and it often concerns vulnerable people," he said also referring to the people in the benefits scandal who got caught up in the system "They were not listened to and weren't believed The two state secretaries also spoke with the biological mother of the three boys who also spent some time in the same Vlaardingen foster family and were subjected to abuse The father of the Syrian family is no longer in the picture The people involved have a residence permit Organizations responsible for youth protection and foster care admitted to severe failures in the case of a 10-year-old girl from Vlaardingen, who suffered extreme abuse at the hands of her foster parents while authorities investigate extensive failures within the system The child suffered months of abuse in her foster home, including physical assaults, starvation, and being locked in an electrified cage. Her condition deteriorated so severely that when she was finally hospitalized in May 2024, she was comatose Brain damage and multiple fractures have left her in need of lifelong intensive care One of the most alarming failures involved a video showing the girl repeatedly hitting her head on the floor A behavioral scientist at WSS saw the footage and reported it to Enver via email questioning why no immediate action was taken Esther Reinhard of Enver admitted that the email may have been lost during a transition between caseworkers The lack of oversight on the responsible youth protector is unacceptable The mandatory reporting protocol was not followed and no behavioral scientist was consulted." The investigation has since revealed that they allegedly abused three other children in their care: two boys and the girl’s half-sister were reportedly subjected to severe beatings The abuse occurred between July and September 2021 A psychologist who had treated one of the boys later provided video evidence in which the child described the abuse in detail aged 2 and 3 during the period of abuse from March 2022 to December 2023 The OM (Public Prosecution Service) stated that the foster parents kicked her forced her to stand in a bucket filled with her own excrement A damning report by the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate (IGJ) and the Inspectorate of Justice and Security (IJV) detailed a six-month period during which the girl was left without proper supervision. Despite multiple cries for help, agencies failed to act The report confirmed that WSS and Enver ignored warning signs and failed to monitor the girl’s safety Authorities had previous knowledge of abuse within the foster home. In 2021, Enver placed three Syrian brothers with the same foster parents. Reports surfaced of severe mistreatment, including starvation and confinement in a dog cage. The police urged youth protection agency Nidos to press charges, but no legal action was taken. Six months later, despite these reports, "Rob" approved the placement of the 10-year-old girl and her sister in the same home. The girl made multiple attempts to seek help. In December 2024, she confided in a supermarket employee that she was being abused. The police were alerted and documented visible injuries but determined there was insufficient evidence to intervene. Around the same time, she told school staff that she was being forced to stand outside naked in winter as punishment. Instead of reporting this, the school consulted her foster mother and sent her back home. In a separate incident, the girl pleaded with strangers at a shopping mall to help her. Again, she was returned to her foster family without further investigation. The Public Prosecution Service has charged the foster parents with attempted manslaughter, severe assault, unlawful deprivation of liberty, and causing grievous bodily harm. The case is scheduled for a full hearing on November 6 and 7, with an additional court date set for November 11. A preparatory hearing is scheduled for May 7. Meanwhile, WSS and Enver have been placed under intensified oversight to ensure that proposed improvements are implemented. WSS had already been under scrutiny since 2020, but despite previous interventions, the agency failed to prevent further tragedies. "We have improved internal processes and doubled the number of behavioral scientists," said Pim Croiset van Uchelen of WSS. "But it wasn’t enough. We must do more." The girl’s biological mother and the families of the other abused children remain outraged. "It is unbearable to know that if the reports of abuse had been taken seriously in 2021, my daughter might have been spared this nightmare," the mother’s advocate said. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. his lawyer has said in a statement on behalf of the family Van Uffelen (45) suffered a heart attack at the weekend and was taken to hospital where he died on Monday. “The cause of death appears to be a medical one,” lawyer Richard Korver said The attacks prompted Vlissingen mayor Bert Wijbenga to order Van Uffelen to leave his house and the area three times because of the dangers to his neighbours Last month he was allowed to return to his house following a period of calm one of whom has been given a 14-month jail sentence None of the perpetrators have spoken about the reasons behind the attacks or who paid them to carry them out Van Uffelen himself has always maintained he did not know why he had been singled out “Of course, I was asked by police what the reason might be. Two residents were treated at the scene by paramedics but did not require hospitalization. Emergency services evacuated residents to a nearby care center, where victim support was provided. Some residents were allowed to return later that morning, though others remain displaced due to structural damage and ongoing investigations. The blast blew the stairwell doors off their frames, shattered windows, and scattered debris throughout the building. “I woke up to an enormous bang and thought the ceiling was coming down,” said a neighbor of René F.'s son to AD. "This is unsettling. Fortunately, I can stay with my parents nearby." Another resident expressed frustration over the ease with which the suspects accessed the building. "The stairwell is freely accessible. We need to discuss installing a lock with the homeowners' association," they said. Police forensic teams are conducting a thorough investigation, collecting evidence, speaking with witnesses, and reviewing security camera footage. Witnesses reported seeing two teenagers, aged about 15 or 16, fleeing the scene on a fat bike after the explosion. "Anyone with information or camera footage is urged to contact us," police said in a statement. Tips can also be submitted anonymously. Last weekend, another attack reportedly targeted René F.'s former residence, which has since been sold. Witnesses said suspects attempted to break a reinforced kitchen window but fled when interrupted. Despite being unoccupied, the property has continued to attract criminal attention. Vlaardingen Mayor Bert Wijbenga visited the scene and condemned the attack. “It’s outrageous that this has happened. Residents, including small children, were deeply shaken,” he said. The medical condition of a girl from Vlaardingen who was severely wounded due to an assault by her foster parents is unchanged. “Sadly, she will be in intensive care for the rest of her life,” said the prosecutor on Wednesday in the court in Rotterdam “She is receiving the care she needs every day Her mother and younger sister have weekly contact with the girl That is very important for the mother and of real value,” said the prosecutor Foster father Johnny van den B. and foster mother Daisy W., both 38 years old, were arrested after their 10-year-old foster child was taken in at the hospital with severe injuries. Her injuries included brain damage and broken bones, and this led to her being comatose for some time The two suspects were not present in court The foster mother has been taken to the Pieter Baan Centre which is a forensic psychiatric observation clinic The foster father will also be sent there soon Both suspects will be admitted to the center for six weeks The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has not yet responded to the conclusions stated in the reports by the Health and Youthcare Inspectorate and the Inspectorate of Justice and Security and the authorities involved did not cooperate well The OM only has the factual version of the report and has requested the full report from the inspections “The OM understands that the information that has come out as a result of the investigation will bring up certain questions also with regards to tracking and prosecution The OM will carefully inspect the report after they receive it Only after this can something be said about possible prosecution,” said the prosecutor There was also criticism for the lack of performance of the William Schrikker Foundation in its role as guardian of the girl and Enver the foster care organization that placed the girl with the foster parents Two people from Enver and two people from the foundation will be heard as witnesses by the investigating judge Both suspects have been charged with assaulting three other foster children. Their case will be dealt with in detail on November 6 and November 7, with a possible extra day on November 11. The next preparatory hearing is on May 7. The girl, who made several efforts to get help and that meant her personal situation became worse as time went on was taken to hospital at the end of May last year and the inspectors were then alerted by social workers “We must acknowledge that the girl’s situation worsened during her stay in the foster family due to prolonged and frequent shortcomings in the care provided to her,” chief inspector Angela van der Putten said “This is unimaginably distressing for the girl and her family the other children who have lived in this foster family The girl was placed with the family in March 2022 under the supervision of foster family group Stichting Enver and social workers from the William Schrikker Stichting But the two organisations failed to work together and share relevant information They both failed to take action when the girl said she was being abused and she had no contact with her biological family A spokesman for the family told broadcaster NOS that “many people dropped the ball.” “Even after reading the report you have to ask ‘how could this happen?’” Bart Visser said and the foster parents were given all the space they needed to behave like beasts The girl paid a heavy price for the collective failings of the care system.” He also slammed the decision to place the girl and her sister with the family, given that three Syrian boys had already been physically abused by the couple have been in pre-trial detention since May They will next appear in court for a pro forma hearing on February 12 The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is charging two foster parents accused of severely abusing a 10-year-old girl in their custody with abusing three other foster children as well. These are two boys and the first victim’s half-sister. The 10-year-old girl’s condition is stable, the OM revealed in court on Monday. She will require intensive care for the rest of her life Both the biological mother of the boys and the girls are furious who were 11 and 5 when they stayed with the foster parents The foster parents pressed cigarette butts out on their skin and they had to sleep in a dog kennel The foster parents allegedly abused these boys between 20 July 2021 and 13 September 2021 The OM told the Rotterdam court on Monday that after earlier media reports about the 10-year-old girl a psychologist who had treated one of the brothers came forward The psychologist made video footage available to the police and judiciary showing one of the boys talking about the foster parents abusing him was allegedly abused by the foster parents between 12 March 2022 and 31 December 2023 They allegedly kicked her all over her body and forced her to stand in a bucket with her own excrement The medical condition of the 10-year-old girl who got this case rolling when she was hospitalized severely beaten and in a comatose state in May is stable She is literally and figuratively taking small steps,” the OM said in court “This does not alter the fact that she will be dependent on intensive care for the rest of her life.” The girl suffered brain damage and broken bones and was in a coma for weeks the OM said at the previous hearing in September The girl regained consciousness on July 23 The OM suspects the foster parents of trying to kill the girl by pushing her down the stairs. According to the OM, they also locked her in a cage with electric wires attached to it, tied up her arms and legs, and taped her mouth shut. The two boys’ mother is angry and sad. She has not yet been questioned by the various Inspectorates investigating the safety of care in the Vlaardingen foster family, her spokesperson for the organization Namens de Familie, which represents the families of victims. According to the boys’ biological mother’s spokesperson, she was initially advised against reporting the abuse to the police. “She had previously shared their experiences, but in her view, too little was done. She feels the experiences were hushed. Her request to report the incident to the police was rejected. If only she had done so at the time.” The boys were placed with another foster mother, where they arrived “black and blue,” the spokesperson said. The OM expanded the charges against the suspects, Daisy W. and Johnny van den B., both 37, on Monday. They were not present in court. The next preliminary hearing is on February 12. The row started last week when the council wrote to the owner of local bar Café Mes (Café Knife) requesting a name change in line with its efforts to reduce knife crime and “remove references to weapons from the public arena” Owner Arwin Verburgh placed the letter on social media but it now transpires he too was in on the plot politicians were quick to condemn the council’s action with BBB leader Caroline van der Plas saying on social media: “What the hell just when you thought things could not get any more insane.” The AD says it checked with the council several times about the authenticity of the letter and whether or not an April Fool’s joke was involved Even the mayor’s spokesman denied it was a prank saying: “We have been busy for 18 months with a campaign… and this is part of it… knives and youngsters are a major problem.” Café Mes mag geen Café Mes meer heten omdat de naam wapens zou normaliseren. Oh… my… What the hell… Als je dacht dat het niet gekker kon… https://t.co/a3qgmqAqni — Caroline van der Plas (@lientje1967) March 22, 2025 The story was also covered by a number of Dutch newspapers and websites with the request that it keep the truth secret but you should expect a serious and trustworthy government to refrain from making such jokes,” the paper’s editor-in-chief “I’d be interested in whether the relatives of the victims of knife crime can appreciate this.” 1 13-year-old Vlaardingen teenager was stabbed to death by another boy while a 15-year-old youth from nearby Schiedam was seriously injured in a stabbing incident two weeks ago “The council and the mayor have lied to us and that is unacceptable,” Van den Bosch said “And then to ask us to play along with their game… not a chance Playing jokes on April Fool’s Day has stretched to cover more days in the Netherlands and journalists have learned to be wary of unlikely-sounding news stories in the days ahead of April 1 itself the pranks have to be played out on April 1 itself and before midday; otherwise The 10-year-old girl allegedly severely abused by her foster parents in Vlaardingen will be dependent on intensive care for the rest of her life the Public Prosecution Service (OM) said in the first preliminary hearing against her foster parents in the court of Rotterdam The OM suspects foster parents John van den B. and Daisy W., both 37 and from Vlaardingen, of attempted manslaughter and placing or leaving someone in a helpless state The 10-year-old girl was taken to the hospital during the early hours of May 21. According to the OM, she was in a coma, had multiple broken bones, and was severely malnourished, weighing only 20 kilograms. She was transferred to a rehabilitation clinic in June where she regained consciousness on July 23 "But that sounds more positive than it is," the prosecutor said in the hearing According to the prosecutor, the suspects kept the child in a kind of cage, which looked like it had electric wires attached to it. They also abused her so badly that she sustained serious and permanent injuries, including by throwing her down the stairs, and neglected her by not allowing her to receive medical care, the prosecutor said, according to NOS The girl was dirty with a head full of lice when the hospital admitted her in May the authorities found tie wraps and a shock collar They're investigating whether the girl's injuries correspond with these items Shortly after her hospitalization, it became apparent that the girl asked for help multiple times including by approaching strangers at the supermarket and people at her school the agencies involved with the family dismissed her story The OM also revealed that the authorities were investigating whether the suspects also abused the other two children in their care The child had been living with these foster parents since 21 March 2022. In December, during a court case about the girl’s mother’s parental authority, William Schrikker Youth Protection raised concerns about the foster parents’ suitability and asked to move her to another family partly based on the advice from the Child Protection Council describing the foster parents as "loving and caring," it was decided to keep the girl in their care The Healthcare and Youth Inspectorate, the Justice and Security Inspectorate, and the Education Inspectorate are currently investigating what went wrong with the aid provided to the girl The details revealed in the hearing came as a double shock to the girl's biological mother, her lawyer told RTL Nieuws the mother reported the possible abuse to Child Protection multiple times but the service always believed the foster parents' statements that the girl had injured herself The two suspects are awaiting psychiatric evaluation by the Pieter Baan Center they'll only start their six-week evaluation in February The report will only be available in May or June next year The next hearing in this case is scheduled for November 25 The girl was taken to the hospital with multiple broken bones and severely malnourished during the early hours of May 21, according to the newspaper. She was in a coma and has still not woken up. She had been living with these foster parents since 21 March 2022. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) suspects her foster parents of attempted manslaughter Sources told the Telegraaf that the foster parents regularly tied up the girl in their house on Madoerastraat using handcuffs or tape to tie her to a radiator One source said they used her as a house slave “Think of a situation in which she had to mop the floor on her knees Then one of the foster parents threw something on the floor so that she had to clean it again.” The girl asked strangers at the shopping center and people at her school for help multiple times William Schrikker Youth Protection and foster care organization Enver even decided to keep her out of school in December after she repeatedly told staff that she was being abused “She was beaten up and barely given anything to eat Imagine that she had to watch her foster parents eat something tasty as a punishment while she was starving,” a source told the newspaper Another said she was forced to wait upstairs while her foster parents and another foster child celebrated Sinterklaas on Pakjesavond The Healthcare and Youth Inspectorate, the Justice and Security Inspectorate, and the Education Inspectorate are currently investigating what went wrong with the aid provided to the girl A lawsuit about guardianship of the girl previously showed that William Schrikker Youth Protection had doubts about the foster parents’ suitability and wanted to transfer the girl to another family, but partly due to advice from the Child Protection Council, it was decided to keep the girl in their care. The motives behind the explosions remain unknown There have been several arrests in connection with the explosions over the past year The police arrested a 14-year-old boy from Maassluis for threatening school shootings at several schools in the Rotterdam region The boy is suspected of making online threats and Wijchen have also been threatened with shootings this week According to RTL Nieuws anonymous threats were posted on social media promising that there would be “shootings at a few schools on Friday.” The threats were aimed at schools in Vlaardingen “The police are currently investigating all reports carefully We understand that these reports can cause concern We remain alert and are closely monitoring the situation,” the Rotterdam police said adding that they’re taking “appropriate measures” where necessary Various schools in the Netherlands have faced mass shooting threats this week. The bridge’s strong three-dimensional character not only adds to the design’s expressiveness, but also has functional purposes. Made of square steel elements it twists on a horizontal axis, and the constantly changing sections are the perfect format to absorb vibrations, thus reinforcing the bridge’s movement, when a cyclist crosses. She was rushed to the hospital in worrying condition. It is the fifth time in just over three weeks that a child has been hurt in a fall from a building in the Rotterdam region, according to Rijnmond. The cause of the girl’s fall is still unknown. The police are investigating. Last week, a 1-year-old toddler got seriously hurt after falling out of a window of a home on Mathenesserdijk, also in Rotterdam-West. On Saturday, a 6-year-old girl fell from a balcony in Rotterdam-Feijenoord and sustained serious injuries. At the end of July, two such incidents occurred on the same day. A 5-year-old fell from a window in Vlaardingen, and a 4-year-old fell from a window in Rotterdam-Feijenoord. Both got hurt. The corner property was completely gutted in the blaze and three people who were in the house at the time have been hospitalised after inhaling smoke The location is next to a garage lock-up belonging to Vlaardingen plumber Ron van Uffelen whose property has been attacked more than a dozen times since last April Locals told the AD that the home was lived in by Van Uffelen’s sister in law The explosion which led to the fire took place at around 1.45 am Police have made six arrests in their investigation into the attacks on Van Uffelen’s property but they still continue a 27-year-old man appeared in court in connection with the blasts A minor has also been charged with the explosions The plumber and his family have also been ordered to leave their home several times The plumber’s wife told the AD in an interview this week that their lives have been turned upside down by the attacks. “You can’t lead your life in a normal way,” she said. “And that goes for our family, our relatives, our friends and acquaintances. It is worse for the children. We just can’t explain why this is happening.”  We could not provide the Dutch News service, and keep it free of charge, without the generous support of our readers. You always have to be careful with that after such a long time, but he seems to be healthy,” Dik Nagtegaal of the Animal Protection Society, said he weighed 2.6 kilos last week and already 3 kilos today He gets food several times a day to strengthen.” Independent tank storage company Vopak has opened 16 new tanks at its Vlaardingen terminal in the port of Rotterdam to help meet the rising demand for energy from renewable sources in Europe The new tanks have a combined capacity of 64,000 cubic metres and are designed to store waste-based feedstocks for the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel Vopak Vlaardingen has a long-term commercial agreement with Shell to store the feedstocks for Shell’s new biorefinery in Rotterdam which will be one of Europe’s largest sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facilities producing SAF and renewable diesel from waste materials such as used cooking oil Vopak’s Vlaardingen terminal is strategically located in the Port of Rotterdam and is well-connected for logistics via vessels the company started repurposing part of the terminal for waste-based feedstocks that supports the energy transition and has invested approximately €90 million in new infrastructure to further diversifies the Vlaardingen portfolio with state-of-the-art assets This project is said to be in line with Vopak’s strategic goal to accelerate towards new energy by developing infrastructure solutions that support customers and society in decarbonisation Vopak will accelerate its portfolio investments towards new energies and sustainable feedstocks by allocating €1 billion in growth capital to these activities by 2030 This is half of Vopak’s growth capital allocation till 2030 long-duration energy storage and sustainable feedstocks The power outage that affected more than ten thousand households in Vlaardingen at around 6:50 a.m All customers have had electricity again since 10:28 a.m. The cause of the outage was a defective component in the high-voltage substation A major power outage in Vlaardingen has affected 10,980 customers Smoke came out of a high-voltage substation in the village on Sunday morning so the fire department had to deal with it before mechanics could determine the exact damage Update stroomstoring in #Vlaardingen bij 10.980 klanten. Brandweer heeft het elektriciteitsstation na rookmelding veilig gesteld. Monteurs van #Stedin zijn nu ter plaatse en onderzoeken de storing. Oorzaak nog onbekend. A spokesperson for the safety region reported that there was no fire, only smoke. According to Vlaardingen24, the cause of the major power outage is a short circuit and a fire in an electricity station in the Fazantlaan in Vlaardingen. The safety region has already made a quick inventory of how many "vulnerable properties" there are in the area in Vlaardingen, this includes for example nursing homes. "It doesn't seem that bad," the spokesperson said. In addition, people have been freed from elevators, and traffic lights in the area are not working. So far, no major problems are known in the safety region. Zip codes 3135 DA (Ambacht) to 3138 HD (Broekpolder) are affected. 2022 Cakes sold by children in aid of Ukraine Photo: DutchNews.nlCakes sold by children in aid of Ukraine Photo: DutchNews.nlVlaardingen town council is building a temporary residential estate to house almost 800 Ukrainian refugees and the buildings will remain in place for four to five years to provide housing specifically for Ukrainians and is being part funded by national government In total, 409 homes are being constructed on the site next to a Unilever factory, and they can accommodate one, two or three people. ‘Imagine a sort of tiny house,’ a council spokesman told local broadcaster RTV Rijnmond a dentist and a doctor as well as gym and  other facilities for children Vlaardingen is currently home to around 200 Ukrainians around half of whom are in temporary accommodation and half living with host families ‘I am proud we Vlaardingers are sticking out our necks to see if it is possible to offer temporary accommodation for a large group of Ukrainians,’ mayor Bert Wijbenga told the broadcaster part of the DFDS ships that dock in Vlaardingen will receive electricity via a shore power installation a joint venture of Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority Jinling roll-on-roll-off vessels for scheduled service to and from Immingham will use the shore power installation The installation will be constructed by Actemium and has been partially made financially possible by subsidies from the central government and the province of South Holland The use of shore power for the berth for the Jinling roll-on-roll-off vessels is in line with the sustainable ambitions of DFDS aimed at reducing NOx and SOx emissions A remote control will enable the operation of the crane on the quay from the ship shore power also contributes to air quality by reducing particulate matter and nitrogen emissions and reduces noise pollution The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Eneco want to stimulate the use of shore-based power in the port of Rotterdam and have set up their subsidiary Rotterdam Shore Power to this end the commissioning of Europe's largest shore power installation was announced: the installation for Heerema Marine Contractors' offshore vessels on Landtong Rozenburg Rotterdam Shore Power is currently working on the construction of a second installation at Boskalis in the Waalhaven Shore power is a crucial pillar of the sustainability strategy for the Rotterdam port cluster cruise and roll-on-roll-off vessels and container ships in Rotterdam must use shore power by 2030 This will save emissions of about 200,000 tons of CO2 and 2,500 tons of nitrogen This means a big step towards an increasingly clean and future-proof port Realization of the shore power installation also fits in with Eneco's One Planet Plan to be climate neutral by 2035 but also in the energy Eneco supplies to its customers The shore power project contributes to DFDS' commitment to achieve net-zero CO2-emissions by 2050 One way to achieve this green transition is to invest significantly in sustainable solutions including the target of 45% CO2 reduction within DFDS' Ferry students have built a reconstruction of an early medieval house in Vlaardingen built according to a houseplan discovered during excavations at Rotta has already played an important role as the backdrop of the re-enactment of the battle of Vlaardingen of 1018 too little time to completely finish the house Despite the fact that the students worked only with replicas of medieval tools and modern handtools to shape the wood the wooden structure and part of the wattle-and-daub wall have been completed Besides getting hands-on experience with tools and Medieval house building the students have learnt about documentation and the use of experiment as an archaeological method gathered by the students in standardised  forms and day reports will be used to better understand Medieval house In total, 70,000 people have been affected by the scare. Evides said the contamination, which involves very low levels of the bacteria, may have been caused by work on the water network, but did not give further details. The problem is expected to last three days. While most strains of E.coli, which is found in the intestines of people and animals, are harmless, some can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory problems and other illnesses. Restaurants and cafes are also working hard to make sure they can still serve their customers. ‘We can’t use our normal coffee maker,’ Daan, from café De Hofnar said. ‘So our customers can’t have cappuccinos. The case of the severely abused girl in foster care has caused outrage Her foster carers are suspected of attempted manslaughter discussed harmful patterns in foster care on radio programme ‘Met het Oog op Morgen’ Neighbours had raised the alarm a number of times about how the girl was being treated by her foster carers had visible injuries and told people she was being beaten and she continued living with her foster carers Professor Bruning says it’s due to how the system works and the number of parties involved: ‘Once child protection workers [in this case they also have sole responsibility for the child The child stops coming to the juvenile court each year and so the judge no longer assesses whether the child is in the right place nobody will raise the alarm if things aren’t as they should be.’ Professor Bruning also feels that society should monitor children better: ‘Children are very vulnerable and don't want to speak up because there’s nowhere else for them to go We need to take this problem much more seriously and put better measures in place.’
