However, it did conclude that maintenance happening while trains continued to drive past the work played a role. “Workers had to cross tracks that were in service to get to their work location,” the OVV said Workers were also dependent on “error-prone oral communication” for information on when and how they could cross active tracks the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment is too focused on keeping train tracks accessible for the transport of passengers and goods during maintenance and other railworks receive insufficient attention,” the OVV said “The Dutch railway is among the safest in the world things go wrong or almost go wrong on the track,” OVV chairman Chris van Dam said The OVV recommended that the railway sector “put much more effort” into registering and analyzing accidents and near misses ProRail should also pay more attention to the additional safety risks associated with railworks at night “especially when awarding contracts to contractors Extra special attention should be paid to freelancers here “The OVV’s investigation shows that they are used excessively” on night shifts in the sector partly because they are not covered by the Working Hours Act SEARCHThe global authority in superyachting Mulder Shipyard opened it second yard in Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk in 2013, to complement its other construction facility 10 kilometres away in Voorschoten. tracks A bicyclist looks at the accident site where at least one person died and some 30 passengers were injured in the early hours when a train partially derailed Netherlands (AP) — A passenger train slammed into a construction crane and derailed near The Hague in the early hours of Tuesday sending two carriages into a field next to the tracks Police opened an investigation to establish if any crime was committed Another independent probe was opened into the cause of the crash Television images showed people using temporary bridges and ladders to cross a narrow drainage canal running alongside the rails to reach the stricken train in the darkness Many windows in the train carriages were broken It was not clear if that happened during the accident or as passengers attempted to escape Two of the bright yellow and blue train carriages came to rest perpendicular to the tracks across the small canal and partially in a field What appeared to be the front of the train was badly damaged Other parts of the train were partially derailed Video footage from inside the train in the immediate aftermath of the crash showed chaotic scenes as passengers tried to get out of the wreckage in darkness Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima also expressed their sympathy in a tweet and Willem-Alexander visited the site late Tuesday morning The four-carriage passenger train was carrying about 50 passengers at the time of the crash said that the passenger train and a freight train both hit a crane that was being used to carry out maintenance work He said the crane was on tracks that were not being used by train traffic and it is not clear how the trains collided with the crane “We don’t understand how this could have happened,” he told reporters at a news conference The identity of the person killed in the accident was not immediately released But Dutch media reported that the person was part of a maintenance team from construction company BAM working on the railway The company did not immediately return a call seeking confirmation Railway company NS also said in a statement that a passenger train a freight train and a construction crane were involved in a collision I’m full of questions and we want to know exactly what happened,” NS CEO Wouter Koolmees said in a statement “A thorough investigation must be carried out all attention is focused on the wellbeing of our travelers and colleagues.” The regional coordinator of emergency services said that 11 of the injured passengers were treated in homes near the line and 19 were transported in a fleet of ambulances to five hospitals including a “calamity hospital” opened in the central city of Utrecht “A terrible train accident near Voorschoten where unfortunately one person died and many people were injured My thoughts are with the relatives and with all the victims I wish them all the best,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in a tweet told news show WNL that a small fire broke out at individual households for much longer than was necessary and did not properly inform residents that it was doing so In 2018 and 2019 the municipality of Voorschoten replaced wheelie bins (for houses) and underground containers (for apartment buildings) The new wheelie bins and tokens for underground containers have a chip with a number each of which is linked to a specific address The aim is to collect more household rubbish separately by limiting the amount of residual waste residents are permitted to deposit.  If a household tries to have their wheelie bin emptied more than once every two weeks,  the refuse truck will not accept it if apartment residents try to deposit more than 5 bags of residual waste on 1 day the underground container will be blocked for the rest of the day the ‘deposit data’ of each household needs to be stored for a while.  this is in keeping with the municipality’s public task was that the municipality stored the data for too long Data on the wheelie bins was stored from the date the new system was introduced This is much longer than is needed to check whether a household has exceeded the permitted amounts.  the municipality did not correctly inform the residents about its use of their data The municipality did send letters about the new containers and tokens but was not clear enough about the use of personal data in rubbish collection The municipality has now reduced the period for which data is retained to 14 days The municipality of Voorschoten can lodge an objection to the fine Authorities say at least 50 passengers were onboard train that crashed into a crane between The Hague and Leiden A train in the Netherlands rammed into a maintenance crane on the tracks before it derailed and ploughed into a field killing the crane the railway infrastructure company ProRail Rescue teams ferried away the injured in pre-dawn darkness at the scene of the incident in Voorschoten The crash happened about 3.25am (1.25am BST) Some of the injured were treated on the spot and 19 were taken to hospital Train services would be suspended for days between The Hague and Leiden one of the busiest routes in the Netherlands “The crane was NS asked travelers to use alternative transport, like the tram services in The Hague. The Dutch rail company also deployed busses to run between Den Haag Centraal, Den Haag Laan v NOI, Den Haag Mariahoeve, Voorschoten, De Vink, Leiden Centraal, Sassenheim, Nieuw Vennep, and Hoofddorp. The accident may also impact train traffic between Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam Central Station, with NS warning of fuller trains and possible longer travel times as people on the Leiden route diver to this one. © 2012-2025, NL Times, All rights reserved. Train traffic between Leiden and The Hague will remain at a standstill until at least April 18. The necessary track repair work following a fatal accident in Voorschoten this week is taking longer than hoped, ProRail said on Thursday. National passenger rail service NS also announced the expectation their trains would not run on the route until April 18. A DB Cargo freight train collided with a BAM maintenance worker's crane early Tuesday morning in the accident near Voorschoten. The crane and debris was then struck by the passing southbound NS Intercity train, which derailed as a result. A BAM worker was killed, and 30 people were injured including 19 who were hospitalized. At least two people were still in intensive care on Thursday, thought most of those injured were allowed to return home on Tuesday. Railroad infrastructure firm ProRail said the extent of the damage on the track at Voorschoten has been examined together with contractors. An initial investigation showed that additional measures will be necessary before the process of salvaging the derailed Intercity train can begin. It is not yet clear when that train can be removed. The repair work on the track can only begin once the train has been salvaged. ProRail also reported that the damage to the overhead lines, the track and the Voorschoten station is extensive. The underground cabling also needs to be repaired. The organization reported some progress, saying the DB Cargo freight train and the crane truck which were also involved in the accident have since been removed from the site. Infrastructure State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen, who visited the accident site herself, said she understands why the repair work will take longer. "I have seen the enormous havoc that has arisen there. I also know that people are working with all their might to get the situation back in order as quickly as possible," and adding she understood that patience will be needed. The repair work on the railroad and the Voorschoten station will take at least another week as a result of the crash during the early morning hours on Tuesday. The NS will use a replacement bus service, adding about 30 minutes of travel time to passenger journeys. A recovery company has been called in to remove the trains. The NS said this will happen as soon as investigators release the train tracks. Because some trains are lying across a ditch, a bridge structure must first be built. This process will begin on Wednesday, and the NS said it expects it will take several days. A total of four train cars must be salvaged. In addition, the platform at the Voorschoten station, which was damaged in the train accident, will also be repaired. The accident killed the 65-year-old crane operator, who was employed by construction company BAM. The crane operator, from Beringe, Limburg, was working on the track at the time. His body was recovered late Tuesday afternoon. Thus far, 30 of the 50 train passengers were known to have been injured in the incident. The passenger train driver was also injured. He was hospitalized with broken bones, NS director Wouter Koolmees previously said. The cargo train driver was not physically injured. A total of 19 injured people were taken to a hospital after the 4:30 a.m. accident. Three of them remained in intensive care, listed as in "very serious but stable" condition, according to a spokesperson for the regional acute care association ROAZ. The three were admitted to the two trauma centers in the region where they underwent surgery. Two of them were brought to the Leiden University Medical Center, and the third wend to HMC Westeinde in The Hague. "They all arrived quite quickly after the incident," said the spokesperson. Of the five patients who were admitted to the Alrijne Hospital in Leiderdorp, four have since been released. The spokesperson had no information about the condition of the other. A second victim who was taken to HMC Westeinde was also allowed to leave the hospital. Ten injured people were taken to the emergency hospital that was scaled up in a partnership with UMC Utrecht. Five of them were allowed to go home in the morning, the others were transferred to regular departments of the UMC Utrecht. Thus far, the investigation has shown that the DB freight train first collided with the construction crane at Voorschoten, said State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructure) in a letter to the Tweede Kamer. The other train involved in the accident, the NS Intercity train, subsequently derailed because the crane or debris from the crane ended up on the track. As a result, portions of the NS train stretched across a drainage ditch and partially ended up in the meadow next to it. Heijnen confirmed that the track involved in repair work was not in use at the time, but was located next to the track still being used by rail traffic. In total, work was being carried out on two of the four available tracks, rail manager ProRail said earlier Tuesday. King Willem-Alexander joined Heijnen, Koolmees and ProRail CEO John Voppen during a visit to the crash site. The king called it a terrible incident, and said he thinks that the aid workers have done "fantastic" work. The king briefly joined a meeting held in an emergency office set up in a sea container. There, he spoke with the mayor of Voorschoten and emergency services workers about the accident. He then walked along the track to see the train wreckage with his own eyes. He also spoke to a local resident who joined rescue efforts shortly after the train collision. Willem-Alexander thanked him for taking care of victims and praised the assistance. "I am incredibly happy to see how quickly all the injured were taken to hospitals. I think we should be grateful to everyone for standing by in the middle of the night." According to Willem-Alexander, the accident "could have ended much worse" and he was shocked by the havoc. "It shuts you up." He also called for experts to continue with their work, and asked people not to speculate about who is to blame for the train crash.
