Water safety was the key reason for the development of the Biesbosch Museum Island. As part of a national water safety programme, the 4450-hectare Noordwaard polder has been turned into a water-retention area. Outlets on either side of the Biesbosch Museum were dug to create a new island.
© Ronald TillemanTo avoid any unnecessary waste of material or energy, the hexagonal structure of the original Biesbosch Museum pavilions has been retained, and a new 1000 m2 wing was added on the south-western side of the building. Featuring extensive areas of fenestration, the wing opens to the museum garden on the island. The extension houses an organic restaurant that offers views of the adjacent water and landscape, and space for temporary exhibitions.
© Ronald TillemanThe existing building houses the permanent exhibition, library, multipurpose theatre, entrance area with reception and museum shop. Visitors can obtain tourist information about the Biesbosch National Park and buy tickets for the museum and electric boats. The addition of large dormers on the roof created space for the museum’s offices, the Dutch Forestry Commission and the Park Board.
© Ronald TillemanThe old and new sections of the museum are surrounded by earthworks and covered with a roof of grass and herbs. The roof adds ecological value, creating a sculptural object that reads as land art and, at the same time, manifests itself in the surrounding landscape. A fold in the roof gives way to an adventurous mountain trail and a lookout post.
© Ronald TillemanThe museum uses many resources available in the area, not only for its energy supply and water treatment, but also for the menu in the microbrew restaurant. Moreover, the museum can count on the commitment of dozens of volunteers, many of whom have worked in the Biesbosch in the past. Even most of the contractors and construction workers involved in the redevelopment come from the immediate area.
© Ronald TillemanThe Biesbosch has a rich history in harvesting and processing natural materials and is bio-based avant la lettre. The museum therefore provides space for art, preferably made of natural materials from the Biesbosch itself, in the new wing and on the island.
© Ronald TillemanMidway through the last century, the impressive sturgeon and salmon disappeared from the waters of the Biesbosch. With the opening of the Haringvliet locks and the cleaner water in the river, the likelihood of a return of these distinctive species has increased. The indoor pond at the restaurant hints at the return of the sturgeon.
© Ronald TillemanThe 'Biesbosch Experience' will be realized on the Museum Island in the spring of 2016. This scale model of the Biesbosch, with polders, dikes and streams, explains the water management function and importance of the area when water levels are high. Within a half-hour cycle, the water changes from ‘extremely low’ to ‘extremely high’. Children and adults are able to alter the course of the water by operating various kinds of locks.
© Ronald TillemanThe open-air museum on the other side of the river features a wood of willows called a ‘griend’where visitors can step back in time. Visitors can also see a duck decoy, a hut made of willows and reeds, and a beaver lodge.

Part of a nationwide safety proram of the Netherlands is the Biesbosch Museum Island
located on ground that formerly was the 4,450-hectare Noordwaard polder and which has now been transformed into a water-retention area
The project worked on a preexisting museum
The interior spaces were renovated and a 1,000-square- meter wing was built to add exhibition spaces and a restaurant
all in a way that opened up to the exceptional surrounding landscape
This was achieved through two complementary actions
First were the huge triangular windows looking mainly southward
The double glazing is highly energy-efficient
making it unnecesssary to attach solar protection devices

The hull of the first-ever inland hydrogen vessel arrived in Rotterdam this morning on board the heavy lift vessel ‘Sun Shine’
The hull arrived from China after a month-long journey and will now undergo finishing touches at Concordia Damen’s Werkendam-based facility. The vessel
feature a cargo capacity of 3,700 tons and boast a revolutionary fuel cell propulsion
Antonie is being built by Dutch shipyard Concordia Damen for compatriot inland shipping company Lenten Scheepvaart
The vessel will be used to transport salt for Nouryon
from its salt factory in Delfzijl in the north of the Netherlands to the Botlek in the Port of Rotterdam
“Greening the inland shipping sector is something which we feel passionate about and we will continue to work towards this goal,” Concordia Damen CEO Chris Kornet said
Concordia Damen won the construction contract back in 2021
Lenten Scheepvaart has received a EUR 4 million subsidy for the construction of the vessel from the Netherlands Governmental department of Infrastructure and Water Management
The subsidy aims to stimulate the development of the use of hydrogen as a fuel on the path toward zero emissions in inland shipping
the inland vessel and its operation will benefit from the subsidised hydrogen bunker station in Delfzijl

5 and 6 -- part of her world tour that has smashed records for the highest-grossing ever
"You are not allowed to camp or spend the night in the public space around the Johan Cruijff ArenA," said the Amsterdam council
Amsterdam officials also warned against so-called "Taylor-gating"
where Swifties without tickets turn up to listen outside the stadium and swap friendship bracelets
"Only come to the ArenA area if you are going to the concert," said Mick Werkendam
So you won't hear or see anything of Taylor Swift or the concert," added Werkendam
some fans camped out two days in advance to ensure they got as close as possible to their idol
The Eras Tour has already worked its way across North and South America and Asia since starting in March 2023
it had already become the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets and is on track to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December

One of them tells us he has no recollection of being in the concentration camp
but still feels a peculiar sense of “coming home” when visiting
This is a remarkable story told through vivid BBC archive and real-life memories and
one that needs to be told again and again in order not to be forgotten by the next generation

A new Lions Club has been officially created in Harrisdale and Piara Waters
as the club gained enough numbers last month to register
Lions Australia are a not-for-profit organisation where every dollar donated goes straight back into the community
The new club started to develop in November 2020 with three lions driving the club through the initial development
Despite only just receiving the numbers to become an official club
the Lions Club has already commenced projects that benefit the community including the recycling of computers
Computers are received from various sources; the club cleans them and wipe the system of security before a new operating system and open office is installed
Some of the computers that are re-vitalised are supplied to schools for distribution to students in need
which includes those families that cannot afford a computer at home
said he helped the Harrisdale Piara Waters Lions Club provide three schools with computers so far and feedback has been positive
“We had one school inform the club that the computer has changed the lives of at least one family and the students have improved at school,” he said
The computers recycled by the club cannot be used because of various problems so the club strip them down to basic components
with 90 per cent of the computer recyclable
Some computers are sold back to the public to cover costs of doing the project such as materials and tools
The clubs next meeting will be held on May 23 at Harrisdale Primary School at 2pm
