Speaking at a party conference in Warsaw on Saturday
Zandberg called for a "decade-long plan" to modernize Poland and urged political unity regardless of who holds power
"We must commit to building something consistently over the next 10 years and then get it done
no matter which party governs," the presidential hopeful said
Zandberg highlighted nuclear power as essential for ensuring stable energy supplies
"Energy must not only be clean and affordable – it must also be stable
The solution here is nuclear power," he argued
proposing a cross-party agreement to construct eight nuclear reactors
Zandberg also criticized current healthcare spending as insufficient and advocated increasing it to 8% of GDP
we should reach a cross-party consensus to allocate 8% of GDP to healthcare
This is the minimum required to restore the system," he said
Poland’s presidential election is scheduled for May 18
with a potential runoff on June 1 if no candidate secures an outright majority
The race is expected to feature high-profile contenders
head of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN)
who is supported by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party
Other candidates include left-wing lawmaker Magdalena Biejat

Climate change presents a formidable political challenge to democracies:
The climate crisis is striking the Earth with great intensity
The more severe predictions are materializing sooner than expected
requiring humanity on Earth to rise to decisive and swift action
This crisis is intensifying in the context of what has been defined by the World Economic Forum as the “era of polycrisis,” including economic crises
home to almost half of the world’s population
presenting a tremendous challenge in addressing climate change
Effective climate policy requires a steady public dedication to the tasks of mitigation and adaptation
but elections can result in large fluctuations in government support for such measures
the recognition of the need for decisive and effective climate policy is a politically polarized issue
and even facts and truth themselves can sometimes be contentious topics
climate problems spill across borders and jurisdictional lines that then require collaboration between international
national and sub-national entities with sovereign powers

Zandberg argued that his party offers a pro-social alternative to candidates representing elite interests
The politician also stressed that the election will determine the future of Poland’s healthcare system
which he believes the current government is pushing toward privatization
Zandberg announced an intensive campaign across cities and smaller towns to persuade voters that a more egalitarian political approach is possible

Adrian Zandbreg is one of the candidates who have submitted the required signatures to Poland’s election commission
joining officially registered contenders Sławomir Mentzen (Confederation)
as well as Speaker of the Sejm (Poland’s lower house of parliament) Szymon Hołownia
The deadline for candidate registration is April 4
with the first round of Poland’s presidential election set for May 18

Speaking in the north-central city of Toruń on Thursday
Zandberg warned that Poland was running out of time to invest in nuclear power and should push for a joint European nuclear program
“If we do not move quickly with large-scale investments in nuclear power
we will not have enough energy,” Zandberg told reporters
He argued that relying on a single nuclear power plant would be insufficient and that Poland needs multiple reactors to sustain economic growth
Poland’s economy will face an energy crisis as coal-fired power plants reach the end of their technological lifespan
He warned that the country would then be forced to rely on imported electricity
which he called a “bad solution” in terms of cost
Zandberg also urged Poland to push for a European nuclear initiative
Zandberg: potrzebujemy w Polsce nie jednej elektrowni, ale ośmiu bloków jądrowych #PAPinformacje https://t.co/YNAOPpSG91
He criticized what he described as Poland’s traditional approach of waiting for Germany to take the lead
saying Berlin would not initiate such a move
“Poland must take the lead in gathering allies and pushing for change,” he said
He also took a swipe at Prime Minister Donald Tusk
accusing him of prioritizing populist rhetoric on migration over long-term energy strategy
“Energy policy will determine whether Poland thrives in the next 10 to 15 years or falls into stagnation like parts of Western Europe,” Zandberg said
Zandberg told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Friday that EU countries should bring together their defense industries and strengthen military cooperation

“I don’t like to rip the soul out of a house,” says Hubert Zandberg
which was started in 2019 and finished (thanks to COVID-19) two and a half years later
known as the Lady Builder for her unique position as the city’s first female contractor
brought with them an impressive art collection and an understanding that they were taking on a distinctly British dwelling
a tiny gate at the end of the home’s own private garden leads to an expansive shared one of green lawns and ancient oak trees
you leave the city behind and pivot immediately toward this almost country-like scenario,” says the wife
“You can’t understand the house without knowing the garden,” her husband adds
The project was the couple’s first with Zandberg
who says he makes it a rule not to Google new clients in advance
“I’m more interested in what they reveal to me in our meetings,” he says
and their shared passion for contemporary art
she brought along some cherry pinks—lovely but hard to live with,” says Zandberg
who cleverly wove them into details throughout
they pop out in the patchwork of kilims used by Sinclair Till to create the unifying stair runner that climbs all the way up the house
“The approach was a soft play on English traditional with a bohemian Notting Hill twist”
Zandberg is known for knitting together the historic and contemporary with a lavish but considered use of pattern and sensuous materials
an approach that can be seen in the first-floor drawing room
a plush green-gray velvet sofa is grouped with an upholstered ottoman table and armchairs that Zandberg enveloped in richly printed floral and ikat-inspired textiles
“The approach was a soft play on English traditional with a bohemian Notting Hill twist,” says the designer
The palette works in favor of the art: A Tracey Emin nude painting in rose pink loses none of its erotic edge in this setting
with a floral Roman blind raised across the top of the window overlooking the garden
green-glazed terra-cotta tiles above the Lacanche range
and a mix of painted and stained wood cabinetry for storage
The adjacent dining room is lined in an exuberant wall covering depicting deer and partridges that seem to have leaped out of a 16th-century tapestry
Zandberg hung a pair of pendants and installed candles on bespoke pine cone brackets by Thomas Boog
“I really dislike a single chandelier over a dining table,” says the designer
The owners understood that preserving the home’s historic interior would limit available wall space
“We didn’t want to turn it into a big white box,” the husband explains
even though that would have made it easier to accommodate more expansive artworks
a large painting by Hans Hartung that originally hung in the rather narrow entry hall has since been taken down for fear of damage
But an even more monumental Georg Baselitz painting has found its place as an anchor in the drawing room
it reveals upon further inspection a couple holding hands
“It’s a symbol of our life,” says the husband
who describes their collecting as consensual and “art as a window into other worlds
a way of traveling.” “We always buy together,” his wife says
Two Edward Kienholz paintings of dollar sums hold court at the first turn of the stair
while a dazzling Eric Fischl artwork depicting a dancer in pinks and ochers presides over the second turn
“We weren’t keen on hanging pictures on the staircase,” the wife says
“But that one works quite well because you approach her as you walk up the stairs
Zandberg describes the collaboration with his clients as being like “a dinner conversation—it went around and around
from challenging to fun and back again.” One area where they definitely had some fun was the home’s lowest floor
previously an untouched rabbit warren of rooms that they opened up to create an inviting family lounge
It now contains some of what the owners call their toys: a wine cellar
for displaying whatever treasures these avid collectors bring home next

Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg (Oren Ben Hakoon)
Meretz MK Tamar Zandberg and Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Lieberman both received death threats on Tuesday
as negotiations over a coalition seeking to unseat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit the final stretch

Go ahead and cue the clichés: More is more
Because it’s all true when it comes to Hubert Zandberg
insatiably acquisitive South African–born designer whose latest London apartment is a refined study in fill-it-to-the-brim exuberance
While his client projects—whether a historic Paris hôtel particulier
or a penthouse in Moscow—span a wide stylistic range
his own homes consistently betray the soul of a dyed-in-the-wool maximalist
“I did really slightly overdo this place,” Zandberg says of his two-bedroom apartment
located in a recently constructed building near his office in Notting Hill
“I thought I could push the boundaries in terms of sheer quantity of items.”
it’s much smaller than his previous London residence
a historic five-level former canal keeper’s house
and assorted curios lent the space a distinctive cabinet-of-curiosities vibe
While quite a few pieces made the move to his new home
Zandberg was eager to live with recent acquisitions that had been in storage and let contemporary art really take center stage
“I had a need for something a little bit fresher and wanted to force a change,” explains the designer
who also bought a second apartment in London’s East End that will serve as more of a weekend base—“my country place,” as he puts it
the visual barrage begins in the entrance hall
are arranged floor to ceiling in a dense salon-style installation
Adding to the arresting effect is vivid yellow wall paint inspired by the canary-colored stairwell at 10 Downing Street
only “slightly updated with a bit more acid
He compares the space’s initial impact with that of a busy pattern on a fabric
“but then you can start to peel away the layers and engage with individual pieces.”

Zandberg tends to buy art from a few preferred galleries—including Maureen Paley and Carl Freedman—and he’s a familiar face on Portobello Road on Saturdays and on Columbia Road and around Shoreditch on Sundays
He also makes frequent trips to his favorite hunting grounds in Paris
where he keeps what he calls “lock-up-and-go apartments.” Zandberg jokes: “Some people have a sex life
it’s tempting to say that Zandberg designs with a collector’s mentality
But it’s equally true that he collects with a designer’s mentality
“I often collect with a bigger narrative in my mind,” he says
“It’s the combinations of items and the dialogues between them that most interest me.”
Zandberg deployed an open bookshelf as a divider to help create three distinct spaces
each with its own feel and interplay of pieces
Outside the small and minimally used kitchen (“the oven is mostly for Champagne storage,” Zandberg admits)
he composed a sitting area where a bamboo daybed and a Brutalist mosaic-top cocktail table are joined by a vintage Brazilian rosewood armchair and a 1960s geometric bar cabinet
Rounding out the eclectic mix of accoutrements are a wall-mounted Paul Evans mirrored cabinet
and photographs by Edgar Martins and Wolfgang Tillmans
an artist of special importance to Zandberg
“I adore Wolfgang’s work—he really captures the zeitgeist,” says the designer
whose social circle overlapped with the artist’s when they were both starting out in London

There’s also a small dining area—where the table is as likely to be arrayed with art objects as it is with plates of food—and a lounge-like space outfitted with what Zandberg describes as “midcentury
almost gentleman’s clubby paneling” and “furnishings that are a bit masculine.” This is where he spends most of his time
on the 1970s Knoll sofa or in the Eames lounger
perhaps enjoying a cocktail from the vintage bar trolley in the corner
“I love retro barware—the playfulness and kitschiness of it—as well as the juxtaposition of high and low art,” he says
“It’s about not taking things too seriously.”
Zandberg inserted hits of eccentricity and whimsy
the dashing refinement of a Tommi Parzinger horn mirror and a Sergio Rodrigues rosewood table is balanced by the idiosyncratic expressiveness of a hand-molded vase by Johannes Nagel
who count among Zandberg’s latest obsessions
he devoted an entire wall to artwork depicting women like Courtney Love and Faye Dunaway
Zandberg calls it his “wall of girls—portraits of strong women that I just thought would be fun to hang together.”
what Zandberg wants to avoid at all costs is the sameness and suffocating tastefulness of so many interiors
“The pieces may be stunning and you love everything in it
not filling you with joy?” For this anything-but-ordinary designer
it’s how you put it all together that really matters

Pieter Coetze continues to impress at the 2025 South African National Championships
clocking a Singapore-worthy effort in the 50m freestyle
October 16th, 2013 Africa, International, News
South Africa’s Gerhard Zandberg has retired from swimming
he announced via his Twitter account today
the 6’8″ Zandberg was the 2007 World Champion in the 50 backstroke
to which he added bronzes in the same race at the 2003
Zandberg, who is a 50 meter specialist, did not swim at the 2012 Summer Olympics (he didn’t even race at the trials)
He made a brief return in 2013 at 30 years old
where he finished 13th in the 50 backstroke and failed to advance to the final after slipping off of the blocks in the final
He received from heat from Swimming South Africa after ‘breaking team rules’ in Barcelona
after asking to swap rooms to avoid catching a cold that his roommate Cameron van der Burgh had contracted
Zandberg received a punishment of 50,000 Rand ($5,000) which was later reduced to 4,000 Rand ($500); a 2-year suspension from swimming; 1 year of community service; and an immediate scratch from all World Cup events
around which there is little ability for Zandberg to compete
This left him with two options: either appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland
Waiting out a two-year suspension at his age would have been illogical
Zandberg also took a gold medal as a part of the South African 400 free relay at the 2006 Commonwealth Games
Zandberg’s only public statement on the matter was a simple Tweet where he said that his swimming career has come to an end
Tagged in the Tweet were two South African journalists who have been vocal critics of Swimming South Africa’s punishment

They did not find the same association for older women or death due to motor vehicle accidents
“Stress is a key contributor to mental health burden and a major driver of increased suicide risk,” says Barzilay
a child-adolescent psychiatrist and neuroscientist
“We found that this particular stressor—restriction to abortion—affects women of a specific age in a specific cause of death
and Waller discovered an overlap in their research interests
Zandberg studies how restrictions to reproductive care affect gender inequality
the factors that affect a person’s mental health trajectory and suicide risk
Waller focuses on environmental stressors that influence parents and
Data scientist Elina Visoki from Barzilay’s lab also contributed to this research
Zandberg’s prior work had shown that more restricted access to reproductive care creates a costly trade-off for women’s career aspirations and their family formation choices
The researchers decided to examine other aspects of this dynamic
looking at the mental health implications of enforcing strict reproductive rights and more specifically
the third leading cause of death for 25- to 44-year-olds in the U.S
They conducted what’s called a difference-in-differences analysis
using state-level data from 1974 through 2016 and covering the entire population of adult women during that time
“We constructed three indices that measure access to reproductive care by looking at the enforcement of state-level legislation,” Zandberg says
“Every time a state enforced a law that was related to reproductive care
they analyzed suicide rates before and after the laws took effect
comparing those numbers to broad suicide trends and to rates in places without such restrictions
women who experienced the shock of this type of restrictive legislation had a significant increase in suicide rate,” Zandberg says
the researchers examined whether the finding was specific to women of reproductive age or could be observed in other populations
they ran the same analysis for all 45- to 64-year-old women between 1974 and 2016
they examined another common cause of death
Controlling for potential confounders like the economy and political climate did not change the results
There are limitations to these conclusions
including the fact that the researchers did not have access to data about the experiences or mental health of individual women
“we’re looking at the connection between summary data about causes of death at the state level and policy and politics over many decades
every death represents an individual moment of tragedy,” Waller says
there’s clearly an awful lot more that we need to understand about what these findings mean for individual suicide risk.”
the researchers say the findings have clinical

it points to a need for better suicide-prevention policies and adds hard data to the ethical debate around abortion access
the Penn-CHOP team says it’s important to have insight into current trends to plan for future scenarios in which partial restrictions morph into full-fledged restrictions or even abortion criminalization
“The women internalizing the stories they hear are the ones who these restrictions will affect the most.”
Funding for this research came from the National Institute of Mental Health (Grant K23MH120437) and the Lifespan Brain Institute of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania

first place in both doubles and singles at the ITF Juniors Beer Sheva and first place in doubles at Romania G3
all before coming to the University of Arizona.
Zandberg did something that most D1 athletes cannot add to their list of achievements

2021Israel’s new environmental protection minister has set some ambitious goals: She believes she can use her office to play an important role in the global battle against climate change while also promoting peace in the volatile Middle East
Tamar Zandberg laid out her agenda in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the upcoming UN climate conference in Glasgow
despite its small size and own inability to reach the global goal of zero net emissions by 2050
Zandberg said the country is eager to share its expertise in green technologies
Israel is widely considered a world leader in areas such as solar energy storage
“These are fields where Israel is already in the cutting-edge frontier of global innovation
and we hope that this is something that small Israel can contribute to bigger countries than us to adjust better to the new climate reality,” she said
have become important markets for Israeli environmental technologies
Zandberg said she already has held a pair of meetings with her counterpart in the United Arab Emirates
which established diplomatic ties with Israel just over a year ago
and that the two countries have teams working together on issues like agriculture and water in the arid Middle East
Israel and Jordan last week held a signing ceremony on a new water-sharing agreement
and Zandberg said the two countries are having “extensive talks” on various environmental issues
“Our neighbors share our region and share our climate,” she said
“So it’s only natural that we will face them together
but also to the regional stability and to our peace in the Middle East.”
Zandberg took office in June as part of Israel's new government — a diverse patchwork of small and midsize parties spanning the political spectrum
This includes deep ideological differences over how to handle the decades-long conflict with the Palestinians
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett heads a religious
ultranationalist party that opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state
a former leader of the West Bank settlement movement
has ruled out peace talks with the Palestinians
Zandberg’s Meretz party is the most dovish member of the eight-party coalition and supports a two-state solution with the Palestinians
forged to prevent the country from plunging into a fifth election in a two-year span
all members were forced to compromise on their core beliefs
Zandberg acknowledged some frustration with the limitations created by the political reality
but said environmental cooperation provides an opportunity to improve the atmosphere and lay the groundwork for future negotiations
She said she has met with her Palestinian counterpart
and that professional teams meet regularly to work on issues of mutual concern
“We live here together and we share the land
and we share the air and share the water,” she said
At home, Zandberg has a long to-do list.
Israel has acknowledged it will fall short of the goal of the international community to reach zero net emissions by 2050. It expects to reduce emissions by 85% by that time
Environmentalists have cited a lack of political will by previous governments and the country's reliance on newly discovered natural gas for energy for the lower target
Zandberg said this figure was calculated based largely on a situation inherited from previous governments
She also said Israel's relatively high population growth is an obstacle
And while Israel lags on its own renewable energy goals
she said the government is determined to help the world reach the zero-emissions target through its technology exports and to do more on the domestic front
“That’s our goal to close that gap,” she said
"We are working on new climate legislation for the first time in the Israeli parliament
We are working on the series of implementation plans
how to take the low carbon economy governmental declaration and make it a reality in sectors of energy
which is actually a salty lake situated at the lowest place on earth
This is the result of years of water diversion from the Jordan River for drinking and agriculture and from damage caused by mineral-extraction companies
A secretive oil pipeline deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates has raised fears that an oil spill might one day destroy the Red Sea coral reefs
prized by scientists for their unique resilience against warming seas
Water resources that traverse Israel and the occupied West Bank are threatened by sewage and pollution
Zandberg said her team is involved in negotiations to ensure that Dead Sea factories
address environmental concerns as licenses are renewed in the coming years
The Israel-UAE pipeline is now under review by the government
“and we will express our concerns in those discussions,” she said
Zandberg has been pushing for a new tax on single-use plastics to go into effect next year
an environmental advocacy group with offices in Israel
said it is too early to judge Zandberg’s performance
But he said her appointment has raised hopes that Israel can finally make some progress on long-festering issues
“We’re in a very unique position where we have a minister of environment who is extremely committed to the issue and wants to succeed,” Bromberg said
“You have an environment minister who’s an environmentalist.”
will depend in part on her political skills
Bromberg said that so far they appear to have a good rapport

WORLD backstroke champion Gerhard Zandberg has had controversial sanctions lifted by Swimming South Africa, according to The Citizen
which are needed to litigate further in this matter
towards its athletes and furthering the sport as a whole,” SSA said in a statement
“Consequently and notwithstanding the actions by Mr Gerhard Zandberg
SSA has withdrawn its findings and sanctions against Mr Zandberg.”
SSA levied some heavy penalties against Zandberg for switching rooms to spend the night with his girlfriend allegedly without permission at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona
has always claimed that the move was necessary as his roomate Cameron van der Burgh had a head cold that night and Zandberg was unable to sleep because of it
Zandberg has stood behind his version of the story saying that he asked his federation for permission to change rooms
After a lengthy disciplinary meeting that took place between the heats and semifinals of the 50 back
the federation elected to fine Zandberg R50,000 and a complete a year of community service
SSA also initially planned on banning Zandberg from competition for two years before backing down off that sanction
Zandberg’s lawyers state that they have yet to accept SSA’s ruling today
which we received this morning,” Zandberg’s lawyer Karen Van Eck said
“But I have not had a chance to discuss it with my client
It’s very premature for them to be issuing a statement.”

Solomon Zandberg leads an active sporting life despite missing his right hand
Solomon uses a special prosthetic to hold a golf club
Scored a beauty goal from the point with it the other day
No doubt he’s as great as you describe but a nice shot isn’t exactly unique
There are plenty of kids like that around and …
If that was all Solomon Zandberg did with that one arm
Because he indeed really can fire the puck
All which you’d think would really benefit from the use of two hands
“I’ve never quit because I can’t do something,” says the 17-year-old
he has a prosthetic that attaches from the end of his arm just below the elbow — he was born without the rest of the limb — to the top of the club
Fishing doesn’t sound like much of an issue until you really think about it
The casting and reeling seems like it would require two hands
Turns out there’s a workaround and he found it
You’d expect weightlifting could be even more of a problem
“I just try to work with whatever I can,” he says
And if anything was going to be a real challenge
Getting the proper balance when you’re not square to the handlebars took some time
It’s on the ice that the absence of the arm really disappears
If you weren’t looking for him in his Reach Forth Hockey League game or on his Hamilton District Christian High school team
it would take a good long while to notice what wasn’t there
it would probably only become apparent when you started wondering where his one glove went
There aren’t a lot of one-handed players in the NHL to emulate
So he would go out in the driveway and fire away at a net in front of the garage until he got it
One had to be taped to the top of the stick
So he eventually just stuck the butt end of the stick under his shorter arm and created leverage
not having to lug around an extra arm is actually a whole lot easier
“It’s not convenient to bring my prosthetic to school and put the stick on and whatever,” he says
“So I just tucked (the stick) under my arm and that’s what I got used to.”
Other players have done it but it’s still incredible to see how much velocity he can get with this unorthodox setup
Jim Abbott once threw a perfect game in the Major Leagues with one hand
Lots of people who are missing an arm or leg play sports
Those who were watching the coverage just saw amazing performances in the Paralympics
are we still surprised when we see it done so seamlessly
Yet Solly doesn’t make it sound like a big deal
Everyone who plays a game had to learn the skills at some point
“We all start from learning a brand new thing and work on it from there.”

According to the regulations at the Western Wall, as determined by its chief rabbi, and backed by the state authorities (the legal issues are a bit more complex and nuanced – to read more, click here) women are prohibited from wearing tefillin (phylacteries) or tallitot (prayer shawl) or reading from a Torah scroll at the Western Wall
Women of the Wall have been protesting this practice for over two decades
several female MKs joined hundreds of women at the wall
bringing with them their parliamentary immunity
MK Tamar Zandberg: “I am a secular woman
this is the first time I have worn a prayer shawl
but I came in solidarity with this feminist struggle.” No one was arrested
but Zandberg said police tried to stop her from entering the area with a prayer shawl
“I just forced my way in,” she said
and the fact that several MKs were among them
Such protests both highlight and challenge the lack of religious freedom for Jews in the Jewish state itself
and gender inequality in what Israel deems to be Judaism’s holiest site
I wonder what would happen if enough MKs and hundreds of people showed up to the weekly protests in the West Bank against occupation

2021Israel rejected Wednesday the deal with the United Arab Emirates to ship large quantities of oil through a pipeline running from the southern city of Eilat to Ashkelon
days after a legal spat erupted between the pipeline's operator and Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg
The Europe Asia Pipeline Co.
which operates an oil pipeline stretching from Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat to Ashkelon on the Mediterranean Sea
will not be permitted to expand its transportation and storage of oil in the Gulf of Eilat beyond what it already has permission for
provides for the shipment of an estimated 14 million tons of oil a year
the equivalent of 50 to 70 oil tankers that would dock at the company’s Eilat pipeline terminal

after which it would be loaded on ships headed for Europe
Due to concerns over potential risks to the environment from the deal
Zandberg had previously ordered her staff to cut off contact with Europe Asia Pipeline
whose risk assessment documentation on the deal was also rejected by the ministry as inadequate
Wednesday’s statement by Cohen appears to spell the end of the deal as far as the ministry is concerned
Last week, Europe Asia Pipeline lodged a complaint with Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit claiming that Zandberg exceeded her ministerial authority in ordering her professional staff to break off contact with the company over the deal
The company asked Mendelblit to order Zandberg to reverse course and "act only within the authority granted to her by law."
Open gallery viewEnviroment Minister Tamar ZandbergCredit: Emil SalmanOn Tuesday
an indictment was filed against the company accusing it of causing a severe oil spill at the Evrona nature reserve near Eilat in December 2014
The company described the incident as an isolated mishap
Cohen’s comments appeared to respond to the company’s claim that the ministry had initially supported the deal and then switched course in June, after the new Israeli government was sworn in and Zandberg was appointed environment minister. The deal would involve unacceptable increased tanker traffic in Eilat, Cohen wrote, including the risk of oil leaks. The Eilat coast is an environmentally sensitive area, home to coral reefs and other marine life.

The longtime prime minister has said repeatedly that the coalition of his opponents poses a danger to the country
(JTA) — In the days before Benjamin Netanyahu’s rival lawmakers announced that they had formed a government to replace the longtime prime minister
one fled her home with her partner and baby after receiving what she called “severe threats” against their safety
The threats to Tamar Zandberg of the left-wing Meretz party included a fake notice of her death that circulated on social media
“Incitement leads to murder,” Labor lawmaker Emilie Moatti, a member of the incoming coalition, tweeted Tuesday
“If it doesn’t stop there will be a murder here
Netanyahu has not egged on a crowd of violent protesters
and said before the March election that he would respect its results
But he has said repeatedly this week that the coalition of his opponents poses a danger to Israel
And his Likud party called for a protest in front of a rival’s home
6 but to the period leading up to the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by a right-wing extremist
Rabin’s assassination followed right-wing calls for his murder after he signed a peace accord with the Palestine Liberation Organization led by Yasser Arafat
“The fact that because of a democratic process, public officials are being threatened, raises the great concern that we haven’t learned our lesson, neither from baseless hatred in Jewish history nor from the Rabin assassination,” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a speech Monday
referring to historical internecine fighting in Jewish societies
“Now is the time for every public leader to unequivocally denounce every threat
whatever the democratic decisions may be.”
“We must state the obvious,” Zohar tweeted Tuesday
“There’s no place for violent discourse and certainly not for threats against public officials and their families on the right or the left
Netanyahu does not appear to have issued a similar condemnation
he has repeatedly accused the new coalition of being a threat to the security and future of Israel
On Sunday
days before the rival coalition was announced
whose members were all democratically elected
to the world’s most brutal authoritarian regimes
“A government like that is a danger to the security of Israel and is also a danger to the future of the state,” Netanyahu said
The new coalition favors a “democracy with the laws of Iran, Syria and North Korea,” he said, because it may pass legislation imposing term limits
which would effectively exclude Netanyahu from again running for prime minister
It could also ban anyone under indictment from serving as prime minister
On Thursday, his Likud party circulated a poster on Twitter calling for a “mass protest” that day outside the private home of Ayelet Shaked
a right-wing politician who recently joined with Netanyahu’s opponents
A far-right lawmaker (and former Shaked ally) also promised to attend the protest
In a deleted post on Facebook the same day, Netanyahu’s son Yair also called for a protest outside the home of another right-wing
By Israeli law, a vote installing the new coalition must be held on or before June 14

Poland spends significantly less on healthcare than most EU countries - around 5% of its GDP
the Polish parliament passed a bill to reduce healthcare contributions for entrepreneurs
the change would slash funding for the National Health Fund (NFZ) by more than 4.5 billion złoty (over $1 billion)
The Finance Ministry insists the national budget will cover the shortfall
but Biejat argues it will create another dangerous gap in the healthcare system
with the richest benefiting most from the changes
while the poorest citizens will bear the brunt
calling the bill "so harmful that not even Senate amendments can fix it." He warned of an impending crisis and the partial privatization of public healthcare
urging the president to veto what he described as a reckless policy
"People will lose their health and lives because of this
This madness must be stopped!" he said via social media

Zandberg believes that Israel’s level of preparedness to tackle environmental challenges has improved under the outgoing government
Israel’s outgoing Minister for Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg urged the incoming Israeli government and the Arab world to embrace regional cooperation in battling the climate crisis
just days after the Israeli president said the Middle East is on the brink of a climate catastrophe
Zandberg made international headlines at the United Nations’ COP27 Climate Change Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh
simply for sitting next to high-ranking Lebanese and Iraqi officials
whose countries do not recognize the Jewish nation’s existence and are still officially at war with Israel
“The countries of the region share the warming and drying climate
they can and should share the solutions,” Zandberg said on Tuesday
“No country will be able to withstand the climate crisis alone
and a joint effort by the countries of the region to share preparation and adaptation solutions is the most important thing for the coming years.”
Zandberg stressed that cooperation between Israel and the Arab world is already taking place on numerous projects
“We have been working with the Jordanians on cleaning up and rehabilitating the Jordan River
We are much involved in the Cypriot regional initiative
[Israel’s] Regional Cooperation Minister Esawi Frej signed the solar energy-water desalination Memorandum of Understanding with Jordan and the Emirates,” she said
This COP [conference] at Sharm el-Sheikh is the first time Israel has set up a national pavilion in a climate summit
and it is attracting much attention,” the minister said
“We have visitors from neighboring countries
members of the Israeli delegations have been meeting with their regional counterparts
especially since it takes place just next door to Israel
Not everyone in the Middle East embraces Arab-Israeli cooperation; Tunisian Prime Minister Najla Bouden faced criticism for exchanging words with Israeli President Isaac Herzog at the conference
Tunisia and Israel do not have diplomatic relations
despite the North African country being considered one of the most liberal states in the Arab world
She believes that Israel’s level of preparedness to tackle environmental challenges has improved over the past year under the Lapid-Bennett government
“Israel arrived to COP27 much more prepared than for COP26
we have adopted a series of decisions and allocated considerable funding for fighting climate change
It has definitively been a priority for the government,” she said
Zandberg expressed hope that the new Israeli government would be committed to the vision of pursuing zero net emissions by 2050
“We started late in the game and had considerable catching up to do
we could pass this goal and be even more ambitious than 27%,” Zandberg said
in reference to the net-emissions reduction target for 2030
The Israeli pavilion at COP27 arranged an event which highlighted other cutting-edge technologies that could meet climate goals
“Dealing with the climate crisis requires us to strengthen our data gathering and analysis capabilities
Space technologies provide us with opportunities to improve the observation of changes such as in temperatures
special envoy for climate change and sustainability with the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs
“Israel needs advanced capabilities to enhance our understanding of threat scenarios and preparations for them.”
the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection is working to build a national risk map that would be able to collect information in all tiers from space
The information would feed into “sensitive maps that will allow us to understand where it is necessary to act with the greatest urgency,” he said

Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg (Oren Ben Hakoon)
Environmental Protection Minister Tamar Zandberg announced Sunday that it plans to oppose a motion by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority to effectively instate gender-segregated swimming at nature reserves
the Justice Ministry instructed the INPA to suspend a pilot program to that effect
but the Nature and Parks Authority's legal counsel insisted that implementing the move – lobbied for by the Jewish rights group Bezalmo
which claimed not doing so precluded observant Israelis from visiting many nature sites – would not
The Attorney General's Office ruled that the INPA did not have the authority to make such a decision independently
Deputy Attorney General Dina Zilber said at the time that the Israel Nature and Parks Authority
has no right to implement separate-sex swimming at its nature reserves unless the issue was regulated by law
"Gender segregation is a form of exclusion and constitutes a material violation of equality," Zandberg said
"The American court ruled as early as the 1950s that 'segregation' means 'not equal.' Israeli reality in recent years is rife with segregation – in public transportation
There is no room to further expand segregation in the public sphere."
She stressed that "as the attorney general has ruled that [the INPA] has no authority on the issue
I will adamantly oppose any attempt to pass legislation on this issue
aimed at normalizing exclusion in the public sphere."
United Torah Judaism leader Moshe Gafni called Zandberg's order barring the Nature and Parks Authority from instating gender-segregated swimming in two locations "dark and primitive."
anyone whose lifestyle differs from that of the new minister cannot enjoy the bathing sites at INPA parks
Betzalmo CEO Shai Glick vowed to "spare no effort to overturn this decision" and reiterated that as the plan for gender-segregated swimming would only affect a handful of sites
"it would not infringe on anyone's rights."
