Only about 22 minutes from Zutphen, Doesburg used to be a bastion fort in the 1700s on the River IJssel at its confluence with the River Oude Ijssel Designed by engineer Menno van Coehoorn at Prince Willem III’s request part of Doesburg is shaped after a star-shaped fortress replete with High Defensive Lines composed of ramparts and trenches down to the Low Defensive Lines with the Turfhaven or Kraakselaan road Within the town’s barricaded walls are the Martinotoren—an old church tower—and the Doesburgse Mosterdfabriek one can find the Netherlands’ famous tulips at the National Park contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights 07:30pm ESTShareSaveCommentThis article is more than 2 years old and most sparsely populated province in The Netherlands (which is the world’s fifth most densely populated country) lies the small city of Zierikzee (Pronounced: Zee-rick-zay) It received city rights in 1248 and – in 1250 – erected the original (and still standing) part of the Stadhuis (City Hall) that served as such for 747 years With numerous expansions over the centuries the building was repurposed in 1997 into Het Zierikzee Stadhuismuseum one of the most interesting museums I’ve ever visited Zierikzee had been subsumed into a larger municipality and didn’t need its own Stadhuis Yet the city retains its distinct identity and history Zierikzee was and is a medieval city in every sense Buildings in those old European towns (not just Holland but everywhere) bear the dates of construction on their façades so take a walk through the streets and – one after another – you’ll see 1610 They don’t tear down buildings over there; they preserve them they preserve the most important thing any country or town has: its history with new hi-tech enterprises; wi-fi blanketing every cobblestone street and brick house; communications fine restaurants (trust me) and shops whose shingles hang outside the buildings they now occupy buildings that housed countless families or businesses for half a millennium and more and prosperous player in mercantile trade in the world operating from ports all over The Netherlands and hauling more cargo than all other European countries combined only 20 kilometers from Zierikzee after its 12,000 nautical mile return journey from Burma to pick up hundreds of tons of rice with a quick stop in Portugal to pick up a large order of Madeira The irony is that De Roompot’s home port was Zierikzee only to fall short of home by 20 kilometers – twelve miles Where history lives perspective takes shape So now let’s step inside Zierikzee’s Stadhuismuseum To the left of the immediately engaging lobby is the original part To the right is a newer wing where some very important work is going on When a museum manager detected our interest in this story he invited us (my wife and me and the couple with whom we traveled) into the new wing right smack into the expansive room where two women – obviously high-level experts – were working on identifying and preserving all sorts of objects from the ship including several bottles of Madeira that were still sealed and intact and researchers have been working continuously on this one project exceptionally cool that they readily stopped their work to talk with us demonstrate what they did and how they did it show us a few objects (including a tantalizing bottle of Madeira) this is only one small ship (only 22 men on board) in one small museum in one small town in one small country I’ll bet this little museum doesn’t get as many visitors in a year as the Rijksmusem (Amsterdam) gets in a day “A life’s work is an important thing,” wrote my old friend Chris Brune in the foreword for my book He then cited Dom Joseph Warrilow who gives us a vision of what work can be: “Work you are thankful for and so on (none of which I advise you to ignore) it would do us a world of good to assess the meaning of the work we do I’ve learned over many years that the most important thing you can do with your life is something that will outlast you “be self-referential in creating the career you want and managing it through to successful retirement and a fulfilling life independent of the quixotic largesse of the business world.” It’s quite possible this column will not resonate with some who have read it Video shared on social media showed tornado in the town of Zierikzee in the Netherlands on Monday afternoon The Zeeland Safety Region said there was a "huge deployment of emergency services" in response to the extreme weather incident which also saw a ship run into trouble off the coast Dutch media reports that the tornado ripped the roofs from a number of homes and caused other property damage The Weeronline meteorological service described the event as a "weak tornado," one of only two or three which form in the Netherlands each year the tornado has left one person dead and early indications are that about 10 others have been injured," Zeeland provincial authorities said in a statement adding that "emergency services are still assessing the impact" of the rare phenomenon The Zierikzee housing association said that around 20 rented houses have been damaged and the municipality will provide shelter for affected residents One of the worst tornados to hit the Netherlands happened back in June 1967 when seven people were killed and dozens injured wrote a book about his research on Spanish commander Mondragón He spared Zierikzee during the Eighty Years’ War and is considered to be ‘the good Spaniard’ On Thursday 16 July there will be a symposium at the Stadhuismuseum in Zierikzee where Raymond Fagel will present his book and the exhibition of the same name will be opened ‘For years I have been doing research into the relations between the Spaniards and the Dutch in the early modern period especially regarding the sixteenth century Since 1997 I have been organising lectures on the siege and relief of Leiden in collaboration with the 3 October Vereeniging and became increasingly interested in the early days of the Eighty Years' War A few years ago, I successfully applied for an NWO Free Competition about: Facing the enemy. The Spanish army commander during the first decade of the Dutch Revolt, 1567-1577 the Eighty Years’ War is often seen as a kind of independence war against a cruel Catholic Spanish occupation Until the arrival of the Nazis during the Second World War the Spanish military were the most hated enemies in Dutch history In the national story of the Eighty Years’ War it is clear who is good and who is evil it was a civil war in which the Dutch fought each other It was strategically very convenient to put all the blame on the Spaniards by looking at the Spanish military (Facing the enemy) we can completely flip the perspective The Dutch Revolt looked much more like the chaotic civil war in Syria than we (would like to) think.’ I try to come as close to the concrete events and stories as possible I call this technique the study of ‘episodical narratives’ the often very factual texts about the events Also vital to this research is working with both Spanish and Dutch sources Initially these are mainly chronicles and historical works These more public sources are combined with letters written by the Spanish commanders themselves They show an entirely different perspective these letters have actually never been used In the archives of the Dukes of Alva in Madrid there are still hundreds of letters located You look at descriptions of concrete events and look into how those stories have evolved.’ ‘Research into actual events during the Revolt brings you closer to a local level Like with the collaboration on the siege and relief of Leiden in 1574 But also about the siege and capture of Zierikzee in 1576 in which Cristóbal de Mondragón plays a central part It is easy to combine my research with the history of local events That is how I came into contact with people from the Stadhuismuseum in Zierikzee who were eager to create an exhibition about this commander I discovered that a portrait of this commander was still in possession by his descendants in Spain We managed to bring the painting (two metres high) to the Netherlands and have restored it here It is now on display at the exhibition in Zierikzee until 22 November The original plan was for the exhibition to open in April together with a new hotel in Zierikzee that bears the name of the Spanish commander with the Spanish ambassador and the heirs of Mondragón visiting from Spain those big plans did not go ahead due to the Corona crisis we intended to slowly get back on track with a small book presentation but thanks to the more flexible measures as of 1 July I was presently surprised by the NWO’s request to make a film about the project I didn’t know they did things like that and I hadn’t counted on more publicity The hotel is also planning on organising an opening so we can still create a programme for 16 July.'  NWO will make a video about Raymond Fagel’s research This video will be available on YouTube from 16 July and will be shared on this page Photo: Brandon HartleyPhoto: Brandon HartleyZierikzee isn’t the first place that might spring to mind for a getaway in the Netherlands but this small coastal city is well worth a visit The history of the community dates back to the 13th century and for hundreds of years it was best known for the Battle of Zierikzee The 1304 naval clash pitted the forces of King Philip IV of France against a plucky Flemish fleet controlled by the Count of Flanders the small and swift Flemish ships had the upper hand and easily bested their better equipped but slow and clunky opponents who were quickly grounded by shallow waters The tide turned in more ways than one the following morning after a saboteur cut the Flemish ships loose from their moorings Their crews watched helplessly as they drifted out to sea The city also bounced back from devastating fires in 1414 and 1576 that largely reduced it to ash Two tragic events marked the first half of the 20th century for the community as well a British pilot got lost and dropped eight bombs on Zierikzee Several houses were damaged and a family was killed The great flood of 1953 also heavily damaged the city Zierikzee is home to a little over 10,000 residents which makes it a paradise for photographers or anyone who enjoys classic Dutch architecture Take in the sights Seeing all 500 listed buildings in the city would be a daunting task even if you had several months to spend down there Most will opt to focus on Zierikzee’s most photogenic sights Cross a double drawbridge and visit the Zuidhavenpoort and the Noordhavenpoort first These 14th century gates once helped protect the city You’ll find classic boats in the nearby Nieuwe Haven harbour and historic buildings in the Oude Haven district A hike up the 279 steps of the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren will reward you with awe-striking views of the surroundings below Its 15th century designers originally planned to make it 200 metres tall A recession forced them to chop their plans down to a still impressive 62 The locals often call it by its nickname: De Dikke Toren (the chunky tower) It does look like it’s had a few too many bitterballen Have a dam good time The catastrophic 1953 flood devastated the region and led to the construction of the monumental Delta Works project. Deltapark Neeltje Jans is about a 20 minute drive from Zierikzee It’s home to both a storm surge barrier and and the elaborate swimming pool and daily sea lion shows during the summer months The visitor’s centre contains far more serious exhibits about the flood in addition to the interactive Delta Experience The latter is definitely not for the faint of heart or anyone with a fear of water Bring your walking shoes if you’d like to tour the barrier itself Seal the deal A 30 minute drive north will take you to A Seal Stellendam several seals in addition to exhibits about them This somewhat oddly named sanctuary brings injured and ill seals back to good health before they’re released into the wild Visitors can see the seals in both indoor and outdoor enclosures Permanent exhibits also contain information about what it takes to rescue the creatures and help them become seaworthy once more Go in search of Job Baster and his fishy friends Baster was an 18th century physician and naturalist whose legacy includes dozens of studies about medicine, horticulture, and marine biology…in addition to one of the most unique statues in the country He’s also credited with introducing the nation to what would become one of its most beloved pets You’ll find a stone version of Baster with a bemused smirk on his face in Havenpark holding a goldfish There’s a few more lovingly gazing up at him near his feet Baster once bred the fish in his own private ponds The project proved so successful that he soon had a very fishy fad on his hands Folks came from kilometres around to get one of their very own Roekoekoe is a great lunch spot Head there for a ‘bagel bomb’ featuring smoked salmon or Indian coconut curry dahl They also do coffee if you find yourself looking for a place to chill out in the mid afternoon over a flat white and/or a slice of layer cake If you find yourself in need of baked goods or a loaf of bread for dinner at a rental house or Airbnb, look no further than De Man Die Bakt This bakery has an array of breads in addition to croissants and Zeeland buns If you prefer your lodgings described with terms like ‘historic’ and ‘unique,’ book a few nights at De Zeeuwse Hemel It’s housed in a 16th century building and much of the decor in each one of its themed rooms dates back to the 18th It’s part of a complex that also has a small restaurant Boutique Hotel Zeeuws Meisje is located near the harbour and its rooms have been described as ‘Instagrammable.’ De Oude Haven is one of the city’s many bed and breakfast options. Camping Kloet is a campground located outside the centre that’s tranquil and quiet at least partially because they don’t allow dogs or large groups Zierikzee is located on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland It’s about a 2.5 hour drive from Amsterdam but if you’d like to use mass transportation many opt to ride the rails to nearby Goes and complete the journey with a 20 or so minute bus ride Havendagen is a three day festival that’s scheduled to take place in 2022 on 25 through 27 August. The programme for its 33rd edition isn’t online yet, but it’s sure to include the annual crowning of the Mosselprinses (Mussel Princess).
