Firefighters in Louvain, Belgium, had to destroy nests before a rock concert named for their preference for oak trees and the way they travel in nose-to-tail processions The tiny hairs have a toxin that can cause rashes Even their nests, which can cover several square feet, are too toxic to touch the 1-inch caterpillars devastate forests as they feed on young leaves of oak trees The caterpillars typically emerge at the beginning of May to feast and turn into moths between July and September (MORE: U.S. State Closes All Its Beaches Because of a Toxic Menace) Compared with last year, the number of oak processionary caterpillars has tripled in parts of the Netherlands Once rare in Germany, the caterpillars have been found in large numbers all over the country this summer, but they are particularly bad in cities and towns in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia nine children in Mülheim were taken to a hospital after suffering rashes and breathing problems and six people needed operations after caterpillar hairs got stuck in their corneas A swimming pool in Dortmund was closed for three weeks because of the infestation Parts of a highway near Hamburg were closed for three nights in May so firefighters could remove nests from trees specialized vacuum cleaners and blowtorches to clear out the nests Officials in Frankfurt used helicopters to treat hundreds of acres of forests The caterpillars have some natural predators Cuckoos and orioles appear to be the only birds that will eat them "It's terrible everywhere," Thomas Schwolow "It would be great if it would rain so that at least all the hair on the leaves and in the air could be washed away," Schwolow added We recognize our responsibility to use data and technology for good We may use or share your data with our data vendors The Weather Channel is the world's most accurate forecaster according to ForecastWatch, Global and Regional Weather Forecast Accuracy Overview The plague of oak processionary caterpillars has led to schools and parks being closed, event cancellations and hospitalizations in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. closed the Nelson Mandela Bridge an important bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the A12 and the railroad tracks because it is no longer considered safe Recent investigation has shown that the construction is too heavy for support At the moment it is not possible to say whether there is an acute risk of collapse The large covered bridge itself is now closed to pedestrians and cyclists Cracks had previously been discovered in the Nelson Mandela Bridge which also connects Zoetermeer station to both sides of the city This may be due to errors in the calculations during the design no trains will stop at the station for the next few days Train passengers have to use the bridge to get out of the station which is responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads and waterways is investigating exactly how unsafe the situation is Alderman Marijke van der Meer says that Rijkswaterstaat may be able to indicate within a week what should be done with the bridge it can be decided that all traffic under the bridge must be stopped The fact that this has not been decided immediately has to do with the risks that arise elsewhere if traffic has to be diverted In addition to the regular track and the A12 the RandstadRail also passes under the bridge The bridge is important for cyclists and pedestrians not only to get to the station but also to cross the highway Shuttle buses will be deployed in the coming days to take pedestrians from one side of the bridge to the other and cyclists are advised to drive Train passengers must use Zoetermeer Oost station until the problem has been resolved The Dutch Railways announced that buses will be deployed between Zoetermeer station and Zoetermeer Oost on Friday evening The Nelson Mandela Bridge was commissioned in the early 1990s It was built partly because of the Floriade horticultural exhibition that was held in Zoetermeer in 1992 Major maintenance of the bridge is planned for 2026 The A12 near Zoetermeer will be closed in both directions from 10 p.m The section of the Nelson Mandela Bridge that crosses the A12 will be replaced by a temporary bridge section "Road users must follow a detour and take into account 30 to 45 minutes of extra travel time the additional travel time can be up to 1.5 hours," the service reported Traffic from The Hague will be diverted via Leiden or Rotterdam traffic from Gouda and Utrecht will be diverted via Leiden or the bridge over the A12 in Zoetermeer was hastily closed due to a possible risk of collapse This was prompted by two investigations into cracks in the structure The Mandela Bridge is an important link for the city of Zoetermeer and the only way to reach Zoetermeer station a rail line and the RandstadRail also pass under the bridge It should be possible to use the bridge again on January 15 A fatal car crash in Lekkerkerk on Saturday may have led the police to a home in Zoetermeer where two bodies were found Police are still investigating the two incidents a passenger car collided head-on with a camper on the N210 near Lekkerkerk The driver of the car died and two other people were taken to the hospital with injuries Police did not release any details about the deceased person De Telegraaf reported the victim was a 72-year-old man two bodies were found in a house in the Noordhove district of Zoetermeer the deceased were possibly a woman in her early 70s and a man in his early 30s the wife and son of the man who died in the collision on the N210 The police have not confirmed the reporting Neighbors told the AD they heard screams coming from the house earlier in the day and called the police was a "dear" neighbor who was recognizable in the area because he often dressed in heels and traditionally female clothing "I saw him this morning walking with his son," a neighbor said police also found that the couple's car and two dogs had disappeared but of course it is also possible that they have found him by now," a local resident told De Telegraaf earlier on Saturday "Their son cannot drive a car in his physical and mental condition anyway so that would mean that mother and son are the two fatalities." The police continued the investigation around the house until 5 a.m "At the moment we cannot make any statements about this," a police spokesperson told AD "The detectives have been working all night on the investigation at the house and the results are not yet known at this time." Hedgehogs with tiny transmitter 'backpacks' will soon be roaming the streets of Steenwijk and Zoetermeer for a study into these critters' daily activities The goal is to find out more about hedgehogs and what can be done to improve their living conditions initiator Egelwerkgroep Nederland announced Egelwerkgroep Nederland is teaming up with Silvavir ecological advice center for this study Egelwerkgroep Nederland researchers will find six healthy adult hedgehogs in the wild and equip them with tiny transmitters that will show their location and movement Silvavir will do the same with six hedgehogs that are ready to be released from the Hedgehog Shelter Zoetermeer The critters will be released and their movements will be tracked through to end August The researchers hope to find out more about what routes and distances hedgehogs cover on a daily basis whether they have fixed nests or move about Zoetermeer and Steenwijk were chosen as the locations for this study partly because of the"green vein" in the cities "Both municipalities want to strengthen biodiversity of which the hedgehog is of course an important part." The transmitters are small and lightweight enough that they shouldn't bother the hedgehogs at all But if a hedgehog seems to be in distress because of the transmitter The researchers have high hopes for this study as similar studies abroad yielded a lot of useful information about hedgehogs "This research will teach us so many new things with which we can better understand and protect the hedgehog The information is not only useful for us as hedgehog researchers the general public," study coordinator Merel Klaarmond said The first results of the study should be ready in the autumn
