HHS proposal would be 'direct blow' to community
ALS groups are asking lawmakers to preserve federal funding for the National ALS Registry and National ALS Biorepository, the first and only comprehensive nationwide resource to collect and analyze data for better understanding amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
“A recently leaked draft memo from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposes to eliminate federal funding for the Registry and Biorepository,” the ALS Association wrote in a blog post
“This would be a direct blow to the ALS community
The nonprofit and more than a dozen other ALS organizations across the country sent an open letter urging the ALS Caucus in Congress to restore and protect funding
to take immediate and decisive action to restore and protect funding for the National ALS Registry and Biorepository,” the letter says
“We also urge you to communicate directly with HHS to reject any plan that would abandon this vital program and any others that threaten to halt research for ALS.”
Launched in 2010 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National ALS Registry is designed to gather clinical data from patients to better understand what causes ALS and how common it is in the U.S. The National ALS Biorepository
stores thousands of patient samples for use in research
the CDC’s National ALS Registry and Biorepository represent a tiny fraction of the federal budget — yet they deliver outsized impact
who are disproportionately affected by this devastating disease,” Melanie Lendnal
senior vice president of policy and advocacy at the ALS Association
ALS is a progressive disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and eventually paralysis. Veterans are at a higher risk of developing ALS
with studies showing a link between military service and the disease
Research is crucial to better identify people at risk and develop more effective treatment options
With data shared voluntarily by more than 20,000 ALS patients living in the U.S
and biological samples donated by more than 1,500
the National ALS Registry has allowed researchers to track disease trends
identify possible environmental and genetic triggers
we’re closer than ever to understanding the environmental triggers of ALS,” Lendnal said
“This administration has a once-in-a-generation opportunity: to be the one that makes ALS history — saving lives and sparing families from heartbreak
while potentially saving billions in long-term health care costs
We hope HHS will reconsider any cuts to this vital program.”
the National ALS Registry has collected answers from more than 110,000 surveys on risk factors
making it the most diverse data collection in terms of geography and demographics
It has also collected more than 70,000 biological samples
and cells that can be used to generate stem cells
More than 120 peer-reviewed journal articles have used data from the National ALS Registry
helping understand how environmental pollutants and other risk factors contribute to ALS
and more than 65 clinical studies have been supported by the registry
The association urged supporters to contact their members of Congress and ask them to sign the FY2026 ALS Research Appropriations Dear Colleague Letter
which calls for fully funding research into ALS

as controversies involving Kwame Kilpatrick often do
"I was just calling to give my official apology and eat crow," state Rep
Karen Whitsett wrote in a text that popped up on my phone April 29
"You were so right about him," Whitsett wrote
Since it's not often a public official tells me I'm right about anything, I was eager to hear more. I didn't know Whitsett was referring to Kilpatrick, who resigned as mayor of Detroit in 2008 in the wake of the text message scandal Jim Schaefer and I revealed in the Free Press
Kilpatrick was later convicted of 24 counts of public corruption
and in 2013 was sentenced to 28 years in prison
The only other time I had tried to connnect with Whitsett was back on May 22
That's when I sent her a text asking if we could discuss rumors that Kilpatrick would be released from federal prison
Whitsett seemed like a good person to talk to about Kilpatrick's fate
The Detroit Democrat struck up an unlikely friendship with President Donald Trump after making headlines by giving him credit for saving her life by supporting the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19
While billionaires and bigshots were considered Kilpatrick's best bet for clemency
I couldn't rule out that this first-term rep from northwest Detroit might tip the balance after hanging out with The Donald in the White House
And Trump didn't commute Kilpatrick's sentence until January 2021
Whitsett was eager to talk to me about Kilpatrick last week after he made headlines by claiming Trump promised him a pardon if he would campaign for Trump in 2024
Simon Schuster of Bridge Michigan obtained and published a voice message Kilpatrick texted to Whitsett asking her to remind POTUS of his supposed promise
(For those of you even less tech-savvy than me
smartphones allow you to record a message that can be sent via text to another phone.)
I replied to Whitsett's text that I was tied up and that
Elrick will be IN shortly ...!" I responded
but I'll let those of you who read on judge for yourself
Along the way I'll tell you what Kilpatrick said in his voice message
Those of you reading at freep.com can even hear it in its entirety
I'll tell you about another voice message Kilpatrick left for Geoffrey Fieger more than 20 years ago that Hizzoner came to regret
Whitsett was in a confessional mood when she contacted me last week
"How much do you feel like writing about?" she wrote
Besides her friendship with Trump and rumors of Kilpatrick's imminent release
the only other time Whitsett popped up on my radar was during the Legislature's lame duck session last December
Her refusal to attend House sessions effectively kept lawmakers from getting anything done before they adjourned for the year
so I didn't feel there was a need to contact her
pundits and a prominent pastor speculated that Whitsett was petulant
or had cut some kind of deal with House Republican leader Matt Hall
Whitsett took refuge in Hall's office when Speaker Joe Tate tried to force lawmakers to come to the House chamber so Democrats could try to push some legislation through before their two-year tenure as the majority party concluded at the end of the year
It never occurred to me that Kilpatrick may have been involved in Whitsett's dramatic return to Lansing during the lame duck session
She told me last week that Kilpatrick and former state Rep
Sherry Gay-Dagnogo teamed up to convince her to return to the Capitol
and she let me listen to a supportive voice message Kilpatrick texted to her
Whitsett now believes Kilpatrick and Gay-Dagnogo
who is serving her second term on the Detroit Public School Community District Board of Education
"Somebody got paid something to get me there to Lansing," she told me
Gay-Dagnogo declined to comment on Whitsett's assertion
but used the adjectives "liar" and "crazy" to describe her
Kilpatrick did not return a message seeking comment
Whitsett told me she is spilling now because she believes Kilpatrick tried to get her to lobby Trump for a pardon during his visit to Michigan last week to celebrate his first 100 days in office
Exhibit A is the voice message Kilpatrick texted to her that began: "Hey
but I wanted to get this message to you ..
He promised that in this first month in office that he would give me a pardon
I spoke all over the country on his behalf."
Kilpatrick told Whitsett he campaigned in Michigan
Kilpatrick said he endured intense criticism for endorsing Trump
You might think Trump's decision to let Kilpatrick out of prison 21 years early would be enough
"The pardon would cure everything," he told Whitsett in his voice message
But I do need people sometimes to say something good about what I've been doing on his behalf
His message — or at least its appearance in the public domain — backfired
Kilpatrick's 28-year sentence was one of the longest for public corruption in recent U.S. history. Even some who believed Hizzoner was guilty felt his punishment was excessive — and possibly racially motivated, even though a white public official in Ohio also received a 28-year sentence for lesser crimes
Dozens of people, from pastors to public officials, tried to get Kilpatrick out of prison. Whitsett was among those credited with persuading Trump to commute Kilpatrick's sentence on his last day in the White House
former Fox News personalities Diamond and Silk got more credit
It became clear over the course of our many conversations last week that Whitsett isn't happy that Kilpatrick
Whitsett told me she began lobbying for Kilpatrick's release during phone conversations with Trump that started around November 2020
I’ve never asked you for anything,’" she told me
"And I swear that silence on the other side of the phone was deafening."
"I said I wanted to ask if you would consider letting our former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick out," she recalled
Several people have brought him up to me and he’s gone through the process and I’ve said no.'"
And I’m not happy about what he did at all
But there are tons of people who believe he got entirely too much time for what he did.'"
then said: "Are you just asking for something for somebody you don’t even like
He’s been through the process and he’s been denied twice."
"And he was still chuckling as he got off the phone."
Whitsett told me she asked Trump: "Are you going to forgive the money?"
Whitsett said she got a call from the former mayor
I’m eating crab legs and shrimp and lobster and I just called to say 'Thank you.'"
When I asked Whitsett why she didn't take credit for Kilpatrick's release earlier
"Because he did it," referring to the bribery
extortion and fraud charges that landed Hizzoner in prison
The White House press office did not respond to my email seeking comment
More: These metro Detroiters owe taxpayers millions — but some refuse to pay it back
The Fifth Amendment says you cannot be compelled to give evidence against yourself
It's why most people charged with crimes don't testify in their cases
Yet Kilpatrick essentially testified against himself in his public corruption trial because
federal prosecutors effectively used Hizzoner's own text messages to incriminate him
History has a way of repeating itself here in Detroit
Shuster, the reporter who broke the story of Kilpatrick's pardon plea
wrote that Hizzoner initially denied knowledge of the voice message he texted to Whitsett
Shuster wrote that after Kilpatrick heard the recording
Kilpatrick told Shuster that during a recent White House visit he told Trump
the man who set him free: "If you never did anything else for me
Hizzoner's own words in the voice message he texted to Whitsett put the truth to this latest lie
The noteworthy part of this latest mendacity is that Whitsett
who may have been Hizzoner's most effective advocate
is now speaking out against the man she helped set free
She says Trump would not have offered Kilpatrick a pardon in return for his support in the 2024 presidential election
and I'll do this for you,'" Whitsett told me
If Trump had released Kilpatrick early in 2020
the former mayor could have helped the president carry Michigan a second time
(Trump beat Hillary Clinton in Michigan by 10,704 votes in 2016.) Setting Hizzoner free more than two months after the 2020 election did Trump no good
Whitsett was still willing to help Kilpatrick
Among the texts she and Hizzoner exchanged was one that said: "We are going to figure out your restitution
I have another issue that was dropped in my lap last night that is urgent
Kilpatrick replied: "All i need is a pardon
He promised me he would do it." Then he blamed another Trump supporter for lying about his efforts on Trump's behalf
Whitsett wrote back that she did some checking and found that two people had spoken ill of Kilpatrick
and "they also turned some groups against you."
I still walk in and out of the White House
Hizzoner's about-face didn't sit well with Whitsett
"I learned Proximity does not mean closeness," she added
In an apparent attempt to win Whitsett back to his side
What I was saying is that if you felt uncomfortable
you had something very important to discuss with him i would completely understand if you did not mention me
I value honesty and mutual understanding."
Whitsett answered: "I just need to feel out the timing and his mood," to which Kilpatrick said: "Truth is ..
All i desire to do is help people win at what they love
Whitsett is a candidate for City Council in Detroit's 7th District
Kilpatrick's campaign to charm Whitsett was doomed after April 25
when Shuster posted Kilpatrick's voice message to Whitsett
The reporter noted that Whitsett did not give him the message
She told me she believes Kilpatrick forked it over to force her to ask Trump to pardon him if she met with the president during his April 29 visit to Macomb County to mark his first 100 days in office
Regardless of who provided Shuster with the message
its release did not help Kilpatrick achieve his objective
On Guard: Democratic dirt-mining operation plays into Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's hands
This isn't the first time a recording has come back to haunt Kilpatrick
Kilpatrick left a voicemail for prominent attorney and Democratic Party activist Geoffrey Fieger
I need your support and your help in this campaign."
Kilpatrick went on to ask Fieger to consider hosting a fundraiser and invited him to attend a fundraiser with other lawyers
There was nothing wrong with the message — unless you're put off by Kilpatrick's candor and directness
After Kilpatrick said during a debate that he was "embarrassed" when he saw Fieger extolling his opponent Gil Hill's virtues in a television commercial
Kilpatrick tried to play it off by joking that he would have hit up Mother Teresa for a donation
Kilpatrick later denied making that remark
which was deemed in poor taste for two reasons:
Mother Teresa was a world-renowned nun who won the Nobel Peace Prize for dedicating her life to ministering to the poor in India
Whitsett said she believes Kilpatrick is a narcissist and that this latest text message flap was the last straw
adding that she now wishes she had never gone to bat for Hizzoner in the first place
she said she'll advocate for truly needy folks by advocating for things like food stamps
after-school programs and free meals for school kids
That will leave little time to ask about a pardon
she won't waste her breath trying to help Kilpatrick dodge his restitution bill

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers are still in the phase of the offseason program where they're mostly just running and lifting weights
and the outline of what this year's team is going to look like is in place
but you can see a 90-man roster through the fog now
you are getting a clearer sense of what it will be
It'll become increasingly more real as they get on the field next weekend for rookie minicamp and then gather for increasingly more football-y days of the offseason program and OTAs throughout the summer
But you can see the emphasis on freshening up the defense
adding bigger and younger and more qualified players
You can see an exciting new offensive playmaker
And when you add that to the base they laid with the second half of last season and the stability that comes with a second year in a program
I'm sure some people will skip ahead a few steps
but most of the pieces are in place for the season
Panthers GM Dan Morgan sits down with Kristen Balboni and Thomas Davis to discuss all the new draftees for the Carolina Panthers
------------------------------------------------------
Do you think this is the year that the Panthers make the playoffs
Remember when I said some people are going to want to skip a step
If they could add three wins again and get to eight
it would mark significant progress toward the goal of building something sustainable
But eight doesn't necessarily qualify you for the playoffs unless you live in the
The Buccaneers are the current standard in the division
They're also enjoying the stability that comes with having the same quarterback
And they also added an exciting offensive playmaker of their own in wide receiver Emeka Egbuka
and the getting better is happening in a logical sequence
I'm not going to say a playoff berth can't happen; I'm just saying it's not a catastrophe if it doesn't
and I would never hide your light under a bushel
So I'll go ahead and make you this week's Friend Of The Mailbag
and get the appropriate honorarium on the way to you soon
untethered from expectations that are beyond your control
NFL Network's Steve Wyche on why the Carolina Panthers drafted Tetairoa McMillan: They wanted 'a receiver with a huge catch radius'
This line of thought might seem to come directly from a stolen Ben McAdoo crystal ball
but let me know if you think I'm wrong in thinking it's just common sense
Most predictions have the Panthers jumping two or maybe three wins from last season
as the defensive additions justify that jump along with continuity of coaching (other teams might improve also)
But there's one missing thing in that prediction: the improvement in Bryce Young's play; and when he's the QB it certainly affects greatly the team performance
They went 4-6 when he returned (the equivalent of 7 wins in 17?)
Even considering the games after the bye - when I think Bryce really got to his new level (Jake Delhomme also told that on Jordan and Jake) - they went 2-5 including two close losses against the Super Bowl teams and an OT loss against the Bucs
So my thinking is if the Panthers improve by 2-3 wins
most probably they'll finish with nine or 10 wins this season
especially as teams still see them as a bottom of the league material
the improvement in wins might be smaller as the feeling around the league will shift about them
He has learned the lessons of reasonable expectations well
And that the crystal ball remains in Ben McAdoo's other pants
That part about the rest of the league improving also is one we tend to forget about sometimes
As the noted Eastern philosopher John Fox liked to say
"The other team practices too." The Bucs were good and added a young receiver who could take over for some of their older ones soon
The Saints acquired probably the last draft pick ever born in the 1990s
a quarterback who is already off his parents' health insurance
everyone looks better because no one's lost yet
But it is reasonable to think Young can continue to improve
he's still just 23 — younger than the Falcons' second-year starter and two years younger than the quarterback the Saints just drafted
with his pterodactyl wingspan and hands softer than a Bojangles biscuit
And the defense doesn't have to make a 2002-level jump (31st to second in the league in one year)
it just has to get better than it was to see a significant boost in results
He's at his best when he's moving the ball around to multiple targets
and the addition of a red zone threat ought to help them put points on the board
which is the natural extension of having some success
Watch the Panthers 2025 first-round draft pick speak to Panthers.com's Kassidy Hill from the NFL Draft in Green Bay
I'm really excited about the moves we made in the draft—no doubt we've added talent on both sides of the ball. My question is about a pick from a couple of years ago: DJ Johnson
We traded up to take him in the third round
— a move many thought was a reach both in terms of value and draft capital
He played multiple positions in college but was drafted as an EDGE (I know you're not a fan of the term
but it's in the vernacular now) into a sparse room that definitely needed some influx of talent
he has held his own against the run and made some solid plays there in the backfield while setting the edge
With our edge room now more crowded—especially with the additions of veterans and rookies like Scourton and Umanmielen—do you think there's a chance the team will consider moving DJJ to a more traditional linebacker role
I know he's bounced around positionally (especially at Oregon)
but it might be the best shot at salvaging a high Day 2 pick we spent a lot to acquire
I'm declaring a moratorium on the word "edge" for at least 10 months
And I'm fining Tyler for his excessive capitalization
Everything doesn't have to have capital letters (other than Friend Of The Mailbag
position switches are kind of a last resort
and I'm not sure we're there yet with Johnson (or that making him an inside linebacker is a natural fit)
He's good against the run and has gotten better since he's been here
But he does highlight one of the main storylines of this offseason
This roster is more competitive than it was in January
Roster spots are going to have to be earned this year
When you add a good free agent like Patrick Jones II (7.0 sacks last year) along with a couple of second-day picks
that makes it more difficult for everybody at that position to keep a spot
it will be interesting to see how that one shakes out
and possibly Muhammad III could make the team with Horn Jr on special teams
Last question: do you feel we stepped up and made the necessary changes to be able to compete for a position in the playoffs
Where do you feel we still have weaknesses
Thank you for your time you give to Carolina Panthers fans
And this dovetails nicely with Tyler's question above
because this spot also became a lot more competitive last weekend
big enough for all of them to fit in at once
but that's a normal amount to carry on the 53 without going way short in other places
and Thielen are accounting for half of those spots
So Coker, veteran David Moore, Dan Chisena (whose speed could make him a needed special teams part)
Renfrow coming back from a year out of football
and sixth-rounder Horn have to fight for jobs
There will also be competition from the reported undrafted receivers
including Muhsin Muhammad III (those deals aren't finalized until they get here next week and can often change between the time of agreement and signature)
That's as deep as that group has been in years
and they're in the position of potentially letting guys go who either played key roles in the past or were just drafted
That's a positive for the health of the roster
Guys who are picked on the third day only have guaranteed spots on rosters that are less than ideal
Special teams will be a big factor in this as well, beyond the return jobs. Horn Jr. has electrifying open-field speed and could be a punt return weapon. Fellow rookie Trevor Etienne could make a role for himself on kickoff returns
and in a world beyond special teams staples like Sam Franklin
The roster is incomplete and still thin at certain spots on defense (particularly in the secondary)
the whole is getting better because they have created more competition
Watch the best plays made by wide receiver Hunter Renfrow in his career so far
It's been a hectic few weeks leading up to the draft and the busy UDFA signing period
We appreciate the informative and insightful articles from you and Kassidy
The excitement for the coming summer and the season is
Seems Dan Morgan and his entire staff executed at a high level for this draft
Most of the national sports pundits agreed with mostly top grades given to the Pathers draft class
who is employed by "The Network" gave the Panthers a middling grade of C+
Perhaps that was because the team drafted someone other than who he had mocked several times to the Panthers at pick No
This is why I don't put too much stock in mock drafts
The only pick that matters is the one read onstage by Roger Goodell
it looks like we came away with some nice prospects
ones that will give the team more than a puncher's chance to do well in 2025
Dan Morgan and company potentially filled needs on both sides of the ball
as well as tugging on the heart strings a bit with the after draft signing of "Moose III"
I wish I got graded in college the same way draft grades are calculated
That system works until the prospect in question actually has to perform
Draft grades make for a good piece of content in the spring
They are are basically calculated in two ways — whether the team in question filled their needs as perceived by the grader
and whether they drafted players the grader had good projections on
I love Brooks' Sandwich House up on Brevard
and the Vikings drafted Brooks' Sandwich House in the first round
Except open-air hamburger places without indoor dining rooms where you stand under a shade tree around a common picnic table don't fit as well in 8 feet of snow in Minnesota as they do in the sunny South
the draft industrial complex is incentivized to create reaction and engagement
so if you give everybody the only honest grade right now (Incomplete)
Here's what I'll say about this draft class
They added young talent to a roster that needs it
They didn't fill every need because you can't
but they're also not at the place in the building where you ignore high-end talent for positional fit
Kristen Balboni is joined by Panthers Legend Thomas Davis to break down Carolina's draft
plus an exclusive interview with President of Football Operations/General Manager Dan Morgan and breakdown of first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan
the brass doesn't ask my opinion because I was pulling for Blaine Gabbert over Cam Newton
is there a player orientation where the history of the team
and specifically the origin of the "Keep Pounding" mantra
is explained and how deep the meaning is to the fanbase
but some players also think Sir Purr is a bear
so I'm not assuming anything at this point
I'm still trying to decide what to call the first-round pick
and I think I probably stammered out that nickname because everyone else was saying it
but I may be too old to go that route with someone I'm not that familiar with yet
especially after meeting his delightful mother
who shot down the attempted nickname "Tet" for the best reason ever — "because I named him Tetairoa." (It's not just the Charlotte media; the PA announcer at Servite High School tried that once
never say the name Blaine Gabbert around here again
there is absolutely an intentional effort to teach new players here the legacy
and history — including Sam Mills and his famous words
It hurts a little to realize that McMillan was still 0 years old when the former Panthers linebacker and assistant coach gave the legendary speech that became the mantra for the entire organization (and Scourton was about a year from being born)
new guys are not going to walk in with that kind of familiarity
Twenty years is forever in a cultural context
As he visits the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton
the Panthers great talks shares a fond memory of Sam Mills and how the Keep Pounding mantra started
We definitely have documents and media here for guys to help catch them up
And I've got 20 good minutes of Sam material at the ready
Part of any tradition is hearing it from the elders. That's why guys like JJ Jansen and Taylor Moton are important to an organization beyond their play on the field
but the veteran long snapper played for coaches and with players who were there the day Mills said those words
as he did during training camp when Mills was inducted into the Hall of Fame
Even if you don't know about Mills or his impact
you can't miss it if you're in this building for long
On the wall on the way to the practice field
Morgan played for Mills and was shaped by him through countless hours of film study with his position coach and nights at the bowling alley with his friend
So that message won't fade as long as he's here
about never giving up regardless the situation
about doing everything you can selflessly for the man next to you
is also not just about any individual person
It's literally woven into the fabric of the organization (and into the necks of their jerseys)
they will grow to know it and hopefully carry it on
New players have a lot to process in a little time
so getting them caught up will take a minute
Hello Darin! I hope you are well. Who is the kicker? Will Eddy Piñeiro join the team again? Is Matthew Wright still on the roster
do you have any classic Panthers or DG motivational stories that could push me through studying and taking several AP exams over the next few weeks
School is mostly just preparing for exams right now
Would it be too on the nose to use the up arrow emoji and just refer Young Zach to the above answer
with a strong work ethic and a curious mind and a heart for other people
if you start there and do the right things the same way every day
or as we usually say around here GET BACK TO CLASS
We shored up some areas in the draft, but I think we still need another veteran safety to challenge our two young guys and add depth to the position. We also need another linebacker to help out if we have injuries. I think Christian Rozeboom is a good backup who can fill in
but I think we need another one to upgrade our depth
I would imagine another safety will arrive at some point in the reasonably near future
They had Julian Blackmon and Marcus Williams in for visits back in March
If they had to line up and play today, you'd likely be starting Tre'von Moehrig and Lathan Ransom
But that position is still under construction
who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery
But these things are never quite finished products
figure to get attention throughout the next couple of months
I've been having trouble locating info on UDFAs this year compared to years past
Saw we signed Moose's son who actually attended Myers Park HS while I was teaching there for a few years prior to COVID (along with some kid named Drake Maye and some McCown guy coaching on the staff)
would love to see more about those signings
as soon as those contracts get signed next week
That market is one of the least understood
highest-pressure times of the football calendar
Some people refer to it as the "boiler room" because of the frenetic pace with which it is executed
everyone who didn't get drafted becomes an immediate free agent
and guys not show up for reasons ranging from "decided to retire instead" to "unable to acquire work visa" in the case of an international prospect
there will be a lot of interest in that one guy
We actually talked to the elder Moose in question recently
Stay tuned for more around next week's minicamp
Re-live all the moments and magic that made Muhsin Muhammad a Panther Legend as he joins the Hall of Honor
I read your posts here and watched your videos during draft week
one position that was not addressed in the UDFA signings was long snapper
and we do not have a replacement on the roster
Discussing potentially replacing JJ Jansen
Panthers Senior Writer Darin Gantt joins JJ on the cart to discuss all things Panthers and even gets a shoutout from a special guest Panthers Legend
and in an ode to my favorite Panther of all time
we are now the proud owner of a 10-week-old four-legged companion called Kuechly
She's a little girl so I do have to refrain from bellowing out "LUUUKKKEEEEEE!" in the park but yeah
another addition to this year's stellar draft class
AJ Klein is going to be minding his own business
and people are going to start yelling "LUUUUUUUUUKKKE," and he's just going to start muttering
from your story about finding things in common with fellow travelers in Las Vegas to your adorable new dog (almost as adorable as you thinking you ever really had any say in this transaction)
I am also curious about dogs (or other animals) named after Panthers legends
I don't want my close personal friend Sir Purr taking offense
brought to you by the patron saint of the lightning round Jeff from Fuquay-Varina
how do we turn the lemons left to us into lemonade
I'd say you don't need any more since you're already so sour
Let's see rookie minicamp unfold before we declare anyone a bust
Why don't the Panthers hire Julius Peppers as the head coach
I think he would be exactly what we need to succeed!!
How many wins do you think Carolina could get
And you think Bryce and McMillian would have 500 yards or more this season
How is Jonathon Brooks doing with his rehab
and making the best out of the bad hand he was dealt
just trade up — get the guy from Boston College
As a Panthers fan that's moved to Florida and refuses to spend $400 on Sunday Ticket
I love listening to the radio broadcasts of the game on the Panthers site
Is it going to be the same crew going forward again next season
and Jake's takes as former players is super entertaining (especially when you can hear the field general come out of Luke when he sees something go wrong on defense; hopefully less of that this year!) Thanks
I am reliably informed that our radio crew is coming back intact
which is good news because they do an amazing job
We're in the home stretch of the pre-draft process
as things will lift off next Thursday night when the Panthers pick No
a lot of people are looking for clues (though they might be looking in the wrong places)
With just under three weeks before the draft
the questions are flying about potential targets
along with some random historical references and Petey Pablo
The Panthers are about to flip the calendar to April and focus on the draft
but it's worth looking back at what's been done
the Panthers are largely in draft mode now
The Panthers are on the verge of what could be another busy free agent period
but on the other side of the ball this year
And there's a right way and wrong way to do it
the work of building the Panthers roster for 2025 begins in earnest
With a little bit of a dry news month thanks to some stability at the top
the Panthers are on the verge of getting busy again
The Panthers may have finished the season 5-12 again
but what they created in the second half of the season has people feeling some kind of way
It's a Christmas Eve edition of the Mailbag

how many planets are in our solar system?”
Today’s students have information at their fingertips
As AI tools like ChatGPT become increasingly proficient at handling factual or surface-level questions
the role of teachers becomes even more critical
We’re no longer just helping students find answers
This easy access to information is changing the way students learn
and it challenges us to rethink how we teach
Classroom experiences need to prioritize critical thinking
does this mean we need to change how we engage students
We can’t just have students memorize facts anymore
the real challenge is teaching them how to think critically
and apply their knowledge in creative ways
These skills are what will help them become strong problem-solvers and lifelong learners who can adapt to a world that’s always changing
one parent raised a valid point about how we’re planning to manage the unlimited access to information that students have now and how teachers will handle that shift
After reassuring everyone that our teachers are good at guiding students to the right resources
support teachers in asking the right questions
questions that go beyond what students can quickly search online
A good place to start is with Bloom’s Taxonomy
a conceptual framework of learning objectives
It breaks down thinking into six levels from basic recall of facts to more complex
Rather than thinking about Bloom’s Taxonomy as a pyramid of learning
we can shift our perspective to a circular model
creating fluidity and flexibility when moving from level to level
teachers can identify the types of questions that will encourage students to engage with the material in a more meaningful way
Instead of focusing on what students can easily look up
Instead of just relying on the basic levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy
teachers should help students move to higher levels of learning: applying
Questions that ask students to recall facts or explain concepts are easy to look up
but real learning happens when students drill down
It’s about asking them to think beyond the surface
By focusing on these higher-order thinking skills
teachers help students build critical thinking
and problem-solving skills that go far beyond memorization
It’s important to remember that not every question can be completely Google-proof
But teachers can still get creative with their questions
A good place to start might be a simple question of the day
then gradually move to deeper questions as the lesson goes on
Especially in areas where teachers are most comfortable
this approach helps students think more critically and go beyond the basics
“Why does the sun appear yellow?,” teachers could ask
“What would happen if the sun were a different color?” This invites students to think beyond just the facts and explore different possibilities
rather than having students simply describe a character
“If you could invite three book characters to a party
and what kind of party would it be?” This question encourages students to be creative while thinking critically about the characters and their traits
During a teacher observation the other day
I watched a 3rd grade class dive into a lesson on money
specifically how to add and subtract decimals when purchasing items
the teacher posed a thought-provoking question: “What would happen if the government banned coins and we could only use dollar bills?” The students were not just doing math anymore; they were thinking critically
and that could hurt the economy.” It was the kind of question you can’t just ask an algorithm
It was evident that the teacher was making progress toward their goal of improving the types of questions being asked
Asking questions that can’t be easily answered isn’t something teachers will get right overnight—it takes practice
They’ll need to experiment with different kinds of questions and reflect on what works best for their students
they’ll get better at encouraging students to really engage with the material

Community leaders in Clarksdale, where Ryan Coogler’s hit film “Sinners” was set but not filmed
Jordan and the rest of the cast and crew to visit the grounds where the Jim Crow era vampire movie takes place
“We are extending an open invitation to you
and the creative team behind ‘Sinners’ to visit Clarksdale
to walk the streets your vision reimagined
to meet the people whose real stories echo through every frame
breathing legacy that inspired your work and the people who are sustaining and reimagining its future,” local activist Tyler Yarbough wrote to Coogler on behalf of the Clarksdale community
the movie was a box office success for millions of viewers worldwide
But for it to be a success to all the people who played a role in it making it to the big screen – including the thousands of people who call Clarksdale home and represent chapters of Mississippi’s past
and future – a public screening of “Sinners” with the cast and crew involved could be held in Clarksdale
your film captures the soul of this place: our history
“…We would also be honored to collaborate with you to host a public screening and celebration here in Clarksdale
and future that continue to define our city and to connect Mississippi creatives with your work.”
in part based the film on the blues music and stories shared with him as a young boy
Adding a supernatural element to the racially divided past the state dealt with in the 1930s and beyond
the flick has sold out movie theaters in more populated parts of Mississippi
many of the residents have not had the opportunity to see how the stories they know so well were represented on the big screen
“Just as your uncle’s Blues Music and making this film lit a fire in you
we believe a visit to Clarksdale from you could light an even bigger one for the next generation
And we would be proud to welcome you back to where it all began,” the letter concluded
Coogler had not publicly responded to the letter
If he does take Yarbrough up on the offer to visit Clarksdale
a full tour of the town is promised with stops including Red’s Juke Joint and Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero Blues Club
Sinners follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack
as the duo returns to their Mississippi Delta hometown in 1932 to open a juke joint
Their opening night shindig is met with unwelcome
bloodthirsty guests and members of the Ku Klux Klan trying to crash the party
Other members of the cast include Miles Caton
Although the flick was filmed in Louisiana
there was a physical connection to Mississippi at the end when Buddy Guy and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram appeared in the ending credits scene
Guy is honored on the Mississippi Blues Trail and Ingram is a Clarksdale-born guitarist who helped with the film’s soundtrack

saying the Trump administration’s massive restructuring has destroyed life-saving programs and left states to pick up the bill for mounting health crises
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Rhode Island on Monday
New York Attorney General Letitia James said
Wisconsin and the District of Columbia signed onto the complaint
“Programs like LIHEAP and Head Start aren’t luxuries—they are lifelines for Arizonans
They keep families cool in our summer months
and provide critical support in every corner of our state,” Mayes said in a news release
“The Trump Administration’s reckless dismantling of HHS threatens to rip these essential services away from the people who need them most
I’m taking legal action to stop it—because no administration has the right to unilaterally destroy the programs that millions of Arizonans and Americans rely on.”
eliminating more than 10,000 employees and collapsing 28 agencies under the sprawling HHS umbrella into 15
An additional 10,000 employees had already been let go by President Donald Trump’s administration
and combined the cuts stripped 25% of the HHS workforce
Secretary Kennedy and this administration deprived HHS of the resources necessary to do its job,” the attorneys general wrote
Kennedy has said he is seeking to streamline the nation’s public health agencies and reduce redundancies across them with the layoffs
The cuts were made as part of a directive the administration has dubbed
HHS is one of the government’s costliest federal agencies
with an annual budget of about $1.7 trillion that is mostly spent on health care coverage for millions of people enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid
called the restructuring a “sweeping and unlawful assault” that would endanger lives
This is not efficiency,” James said during a press conference Monday
The cuts have resulted in laboratories having limited testing for some infectious diseases
the federal government not tracking cancer risks among U.S
early childhood learning programs left unsure of future funds and programs aimed at monitoring cancer and maternal health closing
Cuts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also have hampered states’ ability to respond to one of the largest measles outbreaks in recent years
“This chaos and abandonment of the Department’s core functions was not an unintended side effect
but rather the intended result,” of the “MAHA Directive,” they said
They want a judge to vacate the directive because they say the administration can’t unilaterally eliminate programs and funding that have been created by Congress
The restructuring eliminated the entire team of people who maintain the federal poverty guidelines used by states to determine whether residents are eligible for Medicaid
Staff losses also were significant at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
The Trump administration is already facing other legal challenges over cuts to public health agencies and research organizations
A coalition of 23 states filed a federal lawsuit in Rhode Island last month over the administration’s decision to cut $11 billion in federal funds for COVID-19 initiatives and various public health projects across the country

If your tree is affected by verticillium wilt, there is actually no real cure for this. The fungus causing the wilt is in the soil and can spread throughout the soil, thus making it difficult to eradicate. The main treatment would be to remove affected branches and burn them, as well as disinfecting tools throughout the process.
Some that come to mind are spicebush, leatherwood, and sweet spire. A good source of information would be the Grow Native! website. Another idea, if you want color more than flowers and want something quickly, would be to plant coleus which can provide a lot of color in such a spot. Coleus are annuals, but would help fill in the spot while the shrub is establishing.
Planting perennials in the spring is normally done from March through May. Most perennials have been grown outside and will be able to withstand frost without difficulty. Even if some leaves become frost damaged, the roots will remain viable, and new leaves will soon emerge. At this stage in early May, we are most likely past danger of frost, although it could still be possible. I wouldn't worry about any perennials, go ahead and plant yours.
As for tomatoes, since these are not particularly tolerant of any cold, I generally would wait until after Mother's Day or even a bit later. When planted early, especially when the plants have to be covered when the temperatures dip, and because the soil is still too cool, many plants will be permanently stunted from cooler temperatures. Tomato plants set in later will soon catch up with the earlier ones.

Palestinians wait for a meal at a charity kitchen at the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on May 4
Whether Israel embarks on a new occupation of Gaza will depend on the pleasure of one man: not Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
there will be no retreat from the territories we have conquered
And Trump will be crucial in determining whether Israel actually pursues a new occupation of Gaza
20 years after its first one ended in a unilateral pullout of all soldiers and settlers in 2005
According to Israeli officials and reports, the plan is to wait until the end of Trump’s May 13-16 trip to Saudi Arabia
the United Arab Emirates and Qatar before launching what they describe as a total war to defeat Hamas
an effort to recover the remaining Israeli hostages.) This delay is neither a diplomatic nicety nor a coincidence based on operational necessity
It is an admission that Trump holds the power to green-light or halt what may otherwise be a permanent
it seemed like Trump’s effect on the conflict might be a pacifist one: His intervention was largely credited with the successful enacting of a January ceasefire
he gave Netanyahu the green light to resume the war
That’s when he also floated the idea of relocating Palestinians en masse and remaking Gaza into a gleaming
U.S.-owned real estate development — “the Riviera of the Middle East.”
That ludicrous suggestion had a positive effect. Arab states panicked, yielding a summit in Cairo in which the Arab League endorsed an Egyptian-led plan for Gaza after Hamas
They envisioned rebuilding Gaza under Palestinian Authority governance
with active involvement by the Arab League
and massive reconstruction funds from the Gulf
Hamas tentatively accepted the plan in principle
since it included no mention of the group disarming; they care more about being able to continue operating in any capacity than about maintaining governance of Gaza
But the plan was met with immediate rejection by Israel
which said it was “rooted in outdated perspectives” — a reference to the PA
which has since the 1990s governed the autonomy zones of the West Bank
and which Hamas expelled from Gaza in a 2007 coup
which under Netanyahu’s leadership has long sought to disempower the PA in order to ease the way for its expanding occupation of the West Bank
refuses to engage in a plan that gives the PA more power
That’s exactly what the Arab League plan would do
imperiling long-term initiatives favored by Netanyahu’s far-right partners
By more fully embracing the prospect of a forever war — which is one the vast majority of Israelis revile
Most Israelis know that an occupation of Gaza would be an ugly affair in which soldiers would be sitting ducks for militants embedded within a population of 2 million. Economists have warned that the costs of administering the territory and providing services to its population will be staggering
And few believe that Israel can crush Hamas without leading to the deaths of the remaining hostages — as was clear to many from the start
The government has proven indifferent to all this
because Netanyahu’s primary interest is in keeping his coalition intact
Smotrich and his allies have credibly threatened to bring him down should he end the war
And Netanyahu can ignore the public for now
since elections are not scheduled until the end of 2026
weapons and spare parts — or Washington’s diplomatic umbrella at the United Nations — the war cannot continue
Trump will have other focuses on his Middle Eastern tour
including economic deals over his controversial tariffs and
suggests he is also not a fan of forever wars — or of war at all
One proof is in his approach to Iran. Rather than joining Israel in pursuing direct attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, he seems to be headed for a rather accommodating deal on de-weaponizing Tehran’s nuclear program (although he has promised military action if negotiations fail)
So will he be able to see what is so plainly true to so many: that the Egyptian plan is the only viable framework for Gaza’s future
Israel’s government is clearly hoping to persuade him otherwise
The declared objectives of the new plan include expelling civilians from combat zones; instituting long-term control in newly conquered areas; and implementing a screening system to separate civilians from militants
It will also place a renewed emphasis on encouraging Gazans to emigrate — a policy to which Trump is clearly positively inclined
humanitarian aid to the strip will be controlled by Israel
which has blockaded the entry of any such aid since March
They’ll have an uphill battle to convince Trump to fund this effort
Turbocharging the Arab plan and then rebranding it as his own would be the least bad outcome
If Trump wants to take that approach — as he should — he could devote much of the trip to compelling the Arabs to improve their plan
This would mean seriously pressing Hamas to lay down its arms
arranging exile for its leadership in Gaza
and a complete shutdown of all shadow financing to the group
The worst outcome is the one in which he buys what Netanyahu is selling
A new Israeli occupation of Gaza would mean misery for everyone — Palestinians and Israelis alike

A fan thinks that the Jeep J6 Honcho pickup truck concept would bring people back to the brand
I have a hard time believing that Jeep/Stellantis has the budget to build something that won’t accomodate more than two people
They have to look at how a production vehicle like this will give them a good return on their investment
but there are too many consumers who would complain that it can’t hold more people
This would most likely be a $35 – $40,000 truck
which would start with the disadvantage with passenger space
I just don’t see Jeep taking the gamble on going all-in on production
there’s a chance that they would consider making this a MOPAR kit
The JK-8 pickup conversion kit (to be used with the JK four-door Unlimited) cost about $5,500 – and that was before labor
and even talked to a guy who added the conversion himself
From what we’ve seen this this J6 Honcho seems like it could be a much more complete package
one that might be a popular kit – if the pricing was reasonable
One of the issues with the old kit was the towing and payload numbers were poor
We’ll see what Jeep has in store soon
There is no future with electric or hydrogen trucks…
Rather than argue about energy density, or the potential for future applications
I thought these videos would help answer some of that
I do want to include something: I have never believed in “one size fits all” for any technical solution
In some places it makes more sense to use one thing over another
and I think there are some out there that agree with me

ATIKOKAN — Ontario Provincial Police have now located a person wanted on an arrest warrant in connection with an alleged bail violation
The 26-year-old is charged with failure to comply with a release order
He was last seen in Atikokan but was known to frequent Thunder Bay
police provided a description of the accused and advised anyone knowing his whereabouts
to contact OPP but to avoid approaching him
A police spokesperson said Monday afternoon the individual had been apprehended in Atikokan
The charge against him has not been tested in court
Police thanked the media and members of the public for their assistance
NOTE: This story was updated at 2:10 pm Monday after OPP announced they had made an arrest
I had three incidents where cars did not yield right of way when they had a flashing left turn arrow
I have observed several other incidents involving other drivers as well
people seem to think the flashing arrow gives them the right of way
Answer: A flashing yellow light or arrow means “caution.” Proceed through the intersection with caution
Yield the right-of-way to vehicles and pedestrians already in the intersection
If you are turning left or making a U-turn
you must yield to oncoming vehicles that are close enough to be an immediate hazard

he did manage to shoot up both his daughter’s car and his nephew’s car parked nearby

This is 2025’s third edition of TMR’s Ask an Advisor series
a regular column where a team of travel advisors tackles questions from others in the industry
All questions from this series have been submitted by readers and vetted by the TMR editorial team
This question comes from an advisor looking to prepare for possible consumer demand disruption
I have been experiencing a little bit of a drop off in client inquiries for travel
but with talks about a possible consumer slowdown
I’m starting to think about preparing for whatever future may lie ahead
Is it ever worth it to prepare or pivot ahead of time of possible disruption
so the next big disruptive period will be my first
It is absolutely worth it to prepare for possible business disruptions. I refer to COVID as “The Pause” and the pivots I made during this period were some of the most important changes I made my entire career and launched me firmly into running a multi-million dollar luxury travel business – even after having to rely on unemployment during the pandemic! I used The Pause to redo my website
and niche down into my preferred travel destinations and styles
It is ALWAYS worth it to be future-focused and it’s best to start some small adjustments now so that you can reap the benefits in several months
I also urge you to focus on other tasks other than client acquisition as well. Now is the perfect time to refresh your workflows
and perhaps delve into learning about artificial intelligence in the travel industry
make sure you know your numbers for your business
and start evaluating what business expenses should be optional or how much you’d like to set aside for future downtimes as an emergency savings. Have a positive mindset
Some specific suggestions: review automated email workflows
and build out destination libraries in tools like Travefy or AXUS
Update or create welcome guides and email templates
and prep materials like holiday cards or cruise port guides in advance
Strengthen your digital presence by refreshing your website
or learning new social media skills like Reels or video captions
Invest in your professional growth by listening to business podcasts
Build training resources for future assistants
and explore local networking opportunities
Use this time to research future trips or plan personal travel
or simply reenergize with creative inspiration for yourself (don’t neglect your physical and mental health)—whatever helps you stay motivated and ready for your next wave of business
absolutely resist the urge to accept clients or trips that are not within your wheelhouse. Never accept a trip request out of a scarcity mindset. You have to leave space in your mind and calendar for trips that are aligned with what you are marketing to your clients.
You’re already ahead of the game since you’re planning in advance – once you start
you’ll realize that you have an amazing opportunity here to work ON and IN your business and that there is so much you can do now to prepare for a fabulous year of travel.
A travel advisor for 10 years and a Conde Nast travel specialist, Anna Harrison is part of the Top Producers Club at Gifted Travel Network and also gives back to the agent community through their mentorship program
and sharing her passion for travel.
I believe we’re all experiencing a period of slowdown from the busy start of the year
It is pretty typical between ‘wave season’ and this close to summer
but we can always double-check our work and VIP our clients before everyone is off on their trips
the economy has caused some pause to travelers worried about their 401ks and some are showing more caution about going abroad.
there are countless things that we can never typically get to on any given day such as doing training sessions
reviewing your onboarding process and creating content for your marketing channels
Those pesky to-do lists that always seem to be growing and never shrinking – now’s the time to tackle those
which will help you when you’re booking and busy
Consider your business goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them
Take a look at your data and trip details that could help you identify revenue opportunities or places for growth. You can take the time to do personal check-ins with clients
thank you notes and get creative to engage your client base
You can host an in-person event or webinar with wine to chat about a destination
If people aren’t ready to pull the trigger yet on a trip
you can offer ‘office hours’ to provide some inspiration
confidence in traveling and incentivize them to make plans.
Take those educational webinars that provide incentives
specialists badges and better agent rates or FAMs.
newsletter and website for any potential upkeep that you’ve been putting off as well
Think about any lead magnets that could convert and keep positioning yourself as the expert to your clients and new audiences
Pitch yourself to the local media as an expert with some timely ideas you could speak to
I am a travel public relations specialist who maintains PR clients and pitching my own luxury travel advisor commentary to the press in Travel + Leisure
If you’re not familiar with media relations
approachable outlets and build your confidence as well as hone in on writing good quotes or prepare for on-camera local broadcast TV
I would suggest chipping away at the to-dos and continuing to build your confidence if you’re relatively new
It can’t hurt to have a side thing that might provide a steady base if you’re concerned about the future

Her background includes working with top travel editors
and gaining valuable insights from her time in-house at hotels
Fun fact: Jessica earned her RYA certification in barge school and dreams of retiring on her own hotel barge in France
The post-wave season dip in client inquiries is a natural rhythm in our industry
but your concern about potential broader market disruption is timely and wise
extreme event unlikely to be repeated on a similar magnitude
the principle of being prepared remains critical
Not all disruptions will be global pandemics
resilient business strategy is always valuable
especially for newer advisors who haven’t navigated significant market shifts
certain fundamental human desires remain constant
Travelers will always seek experiences that deliver personalized service
and the promise of escape and rejuvenation
You create a resilient foundation that transcends economic cycles by anchoring your business strategy in these unchanging human needs
This means developing a flexible approach to your business that allows you to quickly adapt to changing market conditions
Consider diversifying your income potential—perhaps by expanding your destination expertise
or finding additional ways to add value to your client interactions
and create targeted marketing content that keeps you top of mind with past and potential clients
The advisors who navigate uncertainty most successfully are those who remain proactive
and focus on the fundamental value they provide
expert guidance is an invaluable service regardless of economic fluctuations
but as a chance to differentiate yourself by doubling down on what truly matters: creating exceptional
personalized travel experiences that speak to the timeless human desire for connection

we called a ride-share service which dropped us off at my friend’s house
one friend realized she didn’t have her clutch
She’d spent her cash and had her phone in her jacket pocket
There were just a few makeup items and some personal things in there
because they would only speak to the person who had ordered the car
We were told they would call the driver and call us back
but then my friend received a $450 charge on her card for “damage” to the car
they said the driver claims one of us threw up in the car
A Dealing with ride-share services can be painful because it’s very hard to get an actual human on the phone
You’ll need to speak to a supervisor or manager
I don’t know how they prove who vomited or how you prove it wasn’t you
but I’m guessing that’s what’ll have to happen
lives at home when not away at university and is still a financial dependent
as that’s been our choice and we’re financially able to do that
and I guess we just didn’t notice or pay enough attention to our daughter’s physical health
but we eat a lot and we’re not a very athletic family
she’s completely responsible and independent as far as when and what she eats
eats very healthy foods and healthy quantities
She’s now very fit and what most people would consider thin
Back to my issue: she now wears clothes that show off her slim figure
And she wears sports leggings that emphasize every muscle in her very toned legs and butt
I see the way people look at her when she walks down the street and as her mother
A I like that you recognize that this is your issue and not hers
Because she doesn’t need to change a thing
She’s an adult and can dress any way she likes
She’s proud of her figure and wants to show it off
She’s worked hard to look the way she does
she needs to be aware that she’s attracting attention and take precautions for her own safety

That's No Moon.") You can ask her
how cute is Baby Yoda?" or ask her to talk like Baby Yoda
she only has one or two answers for each of those
so don't keep repeating your requests

Alexa, use the Force. When I tried this, Alexa offered up Star Wars jokes, mostly, but occasionally some interesting movie trivia. Did George Lucas really take the inspiration for the Millennium Falcon's shape from a hamburger with a bite out of it
Northwest states and tribes are asking Congress to include at least $371 million in funding for salmon and steelhead hatchery production
management and more in the Columbia watershed in the next federal budget
a request supported by a range of sportfishing and environmental groups
The letter from the so-called “six sovereigns” terms the big river a “lifeline” to the region and asks lawmakers to make “robust investments to support salmon restoration efforts in the Columbia Basin
the recreational and commercial fishing industry
and the fulfillment of the United States’ treaty and trust obligations to tribes.”
It’s signed by the governors of Oregon and Washington and the chairs of Umatilla
Nez Perce and Yakama Tribes and was sent last Thursday to the chairs and vice chairs of the US Senate and House of Representatives’ appropriations committees as the process of writing the federal budget for fiscal year 2026 begins
While coming at a time of dramatic upheaval in Washington
their letter calls for at least $34 million for operations and upkeep at Mitchell Act hatcheries
coho and steelhead and 30 percent of clipped fish annually released in the basin; $96 million for the Pacific Salmon program funding ESA-required recovery and conservation efforts
including at least $5.5 million to augment state efforts to control sea lions “that are having a significant negative impact” on listed stocks; a combined $58.6 million in support of the Pacific Salmon Treaty; and $75.2 million for mitigation and fish passage work at federal dams
the joint letter from the states and tribes requests $37.1 million for hatchery operations in the Willamette Valley
That funding would go to make up for flat federal funding that could begin to lead to reduced spring Chinook and summer steelhead releases
And it also asks for $70 million for the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund, which since 2000 has been used for nearly 16,000 projects helping restore 12,000-plus stream miles and 1.2 million acres of fish habitat – but is also threatened with elimination in the 2026 federal budget via what’s known as passback
Signers of the letter include Governors Tina Kotek of Oregon and Bob Ferguson of Washington and Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation Chair Gary L
Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation Chair Jonathan W
Nez Perce Tribe Chair Shannon Wheeler and Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation Chair Gerald Lewis
While the term “six sovereigns” was born out of the bid to breach the four lower Snake River dams during the Biden Administration
the state and tribal leaders make no mention of that effort
their request was followed by a letter of support from a range of fishing
“The ecology of the Northwest simply would not be the same without salmon
These species are also the center of robust commercial and sportfishing industries that sustain good-paying jobs throughout the region,” the 38 organizations wrote
pointing to some $7.5 billion in annual economic activity supporting 50,000 jobs
“And salmon and steelhead are a cornerstone of culture in the Northwest
especially for the Tribal Nations who hold treaty-reserved fishing rights,” they add
Signers of the support letter include orgs dependent in part on hatchery production powering fisheries – Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association
Coastal Conservation Association of Washington – as well as ones that might surprise you: Earthjustice Action and Endangered Species Coalition
Other signatories include Backcountry Hunters & Anglers
Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership
“At a time when many salmon populations in the Columbia River Basin are at or near all-time lows
it is critical that the federal government provides much needed funding for programs that support the recovery of these important fish,” the orgs write
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Kenneth Price
a 47-year-old engineer living in Eindhoven
The following has been edited for length and clarity
I've been living in Eindhoven, Netherlands
I moved here from San Diego for my job in machine engineering in the semiconductor industry
most locals were confident that the result would be different than what it was
there were a lot of conversations about it
Since Trump won the election and took office in January
I've been getting a lot of questions as an American abroad
Most people here seem to think that almost all Americans are into politics
but my views don't align with either major party
I've never voted for either of the two major parties. I've always voted third party because I don't believe in binary choices
It's been hard to explain that to people here
It's not uncommon for people to start the conversations here by asking who you voted for
I think they automatically assume I support the current administration
They see a lot of divisiveness on social media
I don't follow the news in the US all that much
What I do follow on social media is polarized
I hear mostly about how friends in the US are afraid to leave the country to visit because they fear not being able to return home
"I'm glad I'm here." They're fairly understanding once you explain that you don't know the answer to their questions
It's a bit disconcerting that you have to explain it because it wasn't like that before last year
I came to the Netherlands several times a year for four years before moving full-time
The election solidified my decision not to return to the US
I can apply for citizenship or renew it at the end of the five years
We want to stay for the quality of life, work-life balance
and low crime — everything about this place that the US isn't
I noticed that conversations always start with "no offense." I respond
"Where's that coming from?" Regardless of whether I agree
People always ask me to explain what the US government is doing
It seems as though people feel like they have to go out of their way to have conversations about topics related to the US if they know you're American
we have a center-right government and some politicians who get compared to Trump
This government is mostly unpopular among the people I associate with
but I know it's popular among certain groups
and people are always making comparisons to the US
The politics here are less polarized because there are more options for who to vote for
I have money in a US bank account that I want to move here
The exchange rate used to be roughly one-to-one
I don't want to keep anything in my US bank account
I'm worried it won't be worth anything unless something significant changes
Being directly affected like that has made me mad
The Holy See released a declaration on Wednesday in which the Cardinals preparing for the upcoming conclave ask the faithful to pray for them
“The College of Cardinals gathered in Rome
engaged in the General Congregations in preparation for the Conclave
wishes to invite the People of God to live this ecclesial moment as an event of grace and spiritual discernment
listening to the will of God,” read the statement
The Cardinals said they feel “the need to be supported by the prayers of all the faithful,” since they are aware of their responsibility in choosing the next Successor of Peter
“is the true force that in the Church promotes the unity of all the members of the one Body of Christ.”
“Faced with the enormity of the task ahead and the urgency of the present time,” said the Cardinals
“it is first of all necessary to make ourselves humble instruments of the infinite wisdom and providence of our Heavenly Father
in docility to the action of the Holy Spirit.”
The Cardinals noted that the Holy Spirit is “the protagonist of the life of the People of God
accepting what He is saying to the Church.”
“May the Blessed Virgin Mary accompany these prayers with her maternal intercession,” concluded the Cardinals’ declaration

Mayne says the book gives “Interview with a Vampire” vibes
The vampire is a Blackfeet man named Good Stab
and the tale he confesses to a pastor in 1912 is one of revenge
The story shifts between the pastor’s journal entries and a modern reader discovering them
and then you kind of realize that he might not be the bad guy in this conversation that they're having,” Mayne says
“Steven — he teaches here in Boulder— ties a lot of his Native roots into his storytelling
So he mixes a lot of lore into it and makes his own very creepy

I lease a car that I use 80% for business and 20% for personal use
Can I deduct my car lease payments on Schedule C of my Form 1040?A
If you lease a vehicle for use in your business
you can opt to use actual expenses to figure your deductible expense
You can deduct the part of each lease payment that is for business
There’s also this oft-forgotten rule: If you lease a car worth more than a certain value ($62,000 in 2025)
you must pay income tax for each year of the lease term on an amount shown in IRS tables
The extra income partially offsets the lessee’s tax deduction of the lease payments and is intended to approximate the squeeze on buyers from the cap on depreciation
Note that you don’t add the amounts to your income when filling out your tax return
you reduce the size of your deduction for the lease payments on the vehicle

If you use a leased car in business 80% of the time
you can only deduct 80% of the lease payments
and you would include 80% of the numbers in Table 3 of Revenue Procedure 2025-16 as a reduction to your deductible lease payments

The 20% qualified business income deduction is set to expire after 2025
Do you think Congress will extend this tax write-off?A
it’s quite likely that the qualified business income (QBI) deduction will be extended if Congress is able to pass its large tax
border security and energy bill this year.Self-employed people
independent contractors and owners of LLCs
S corporations and other pass-through entities can deduct 20% of their QBI
subject to limitations for individuals with taxable income in 2025 of more than $394,600 for joint filers and $197,300 for single filers and head-of-household filers
(The 2024 amounts are $383,900 and $191,950.)
It was first enacted in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to provide some federal income tax parity between C corporations
in which the individual owners pay income tax on earnings up to a 37% tax rate
Republican lawmakers want to extend the QBI deduction
And they have lots of support from lobbying groups representing Main Street businesses.— Joy Taylor
I own rental homes and generate a profit from them that I report on Schedule E of my 1040
I heard that I can get a tax deduction for 20% of the profit
Rental income reported on Schedule E of the Form 1040 may
be eligible for the 20% qualified business income deduction (discussed above)
The IRS’s regulations say the rental activity must generally rise to the level of a trade or business
a standard which is based on each taxpayer’s particular facts and circumstances
there is a safe harbor if at least 250 hours a year of qualifying time are devoted to the activity by the taxpayer
negotiating leases and tenant services counts
Taxpayers who use the safe harbor must meet strict recordkeeping requirements and attach an annual statement to their tax returns
Meeting the safe harbor will let you treat the rental activity as a trade or business for QBI purposes
Note that you would take the QBI deduction on line 13 of your Form 1040 after completing Form 8995 or 8995-A
Or you can use a simplified option by deducting $5 per square foot of space used exclusively for business

it’s a minority of them who are predicting doom-and-gloom at the moment:
Don’t be gaslit: when people tell Bucks fans it’s “wishful thinking” that Giannis will stay
it’s more accurately wishful thinking that he’ll leave
it is basketball malpractice to trade him unless he asks for it
I get that people are emotional right now after a stinging defeat to a hated rival
But if you legitimately want the Bucks to trade Giannis right now
I question whether or not you’re actually a fan of the Bucks
I think a lot of Bucks fans have been drinking the national media Kool-Aid in recent seasons

The Footwear Distributors & Retailers of America trade group urged US President Donald Trump to exempt shoes from reciprocal tariffs in a letter signed by makers including Nike

The trade group said that the industry already faces significant levies
President Trump had imposed broad-based tariffs on goods from major US trading partners
Trump had instituted sweeping tariffs in early April
