prime-time TV presenter Nailya Asker-Zade found herself at the center of a scandal: journalists discovered her to be in possession of a nearly $33 million plot of land near the village of Razdory in Rublevka
a luxurious residential area outside Moscow
The expensive real estate had allegedly been purchased for her by Andrey Kostin
the head of state-owned VTB — Russia's second-largest bank
Asker-Zade responded by handing over the land to a shell firm called Godovari Development
But it didn’t end there: The Insider can report that Kostin still controls the estate
and he even built a luxury villa there for himself and Nailya
According to estimates from the construction crew, the cost of the house — captioned “Villa in the Pines” in the design documentation — exceeds $223 million
RU
Kostin personally supervised all stages of construction and commissioning
He visited the site with Nailya Asker-Zade
the banker's car was accompanied by a police vehicle
the managers cleaned up the site and made sure that not a single worker was in sight
as the owners went for a bespoke British design project and ordered top-tier finishing materials
The paint alone — from the American brand Benjamin Moore — cost an average of around $180 per can
The state of the house in the fall of 2022
The vast plot of 10.6 acres was enough to accommodate the master house and a detached cottage for security and service personnel
The windows of this building are arranged in a way that prevents anyone inside the auxiliary constructions from observing the mansion
The windows in the personnel house are arranged in a way that prevents anyone inside from observing the mansion
With a floor area of almost 3,000 square meters
which connects to the living room and then to the dining room
The ground floor also holds two guest rooms
The estate also boasts a huge spa center equipped with a 20-meter swimming pool
Adjacent to the spa are a billiard room and an “alpine room.” The house has a separate entrance for personnel and deliveries
A plan of Kostin and Asker-Zade's house
The 75-square-meter master bedroom is on the second floor
Adjacent to the bedroom are two walk-in closets for Kostin and Asker-Zade and two separate master bathrooms
There is also a two-square-meter “jewelry storage” room and the master's study
The second floor holds two children's bedrooms
Above the pool is a gym with an area of almost 170 square meters
Construction of a spa center with a swimming pool in 2022
The fireplaces in several rooms of the house are tiled with marble
which features prominently in the banker's house decor
Each step on the main staircase was carved from a single piece of marble
and the same material adorns the spa walls and the jet tub
We recreated the look of the spa from the builders' accounts
A Canadian diesel generator is installed in the basement
The property also features a seven-car garage replete with a car wash
The plot is landscaped with expensive species of plants
The house was completed at the end of 2024
and her children are likely planning a visit sometime soon
The independent publication Proekt wrote about the plot near the village of Razdory belonging to Nailya Asker-Zade back in August 2019
the house has been built on the very same spot
its listed owner in the Russian State Register was Godovari Development
The next month the firm had already acquired one of the most expensive plots in Rublevka
Godovari Development is owned by Cyprus-based Godovari Limited
and Kostin has used this ownership scheme — registration with an offshore shell firm — to buy other assets as well
The love story of the 68-year-old banker and the 37-year-old journalist began in 2011
and Kostin was going to answer “all of them,” Proekt quoted him as saying
the reason was a conflict of interest: the outlet regularly wrote about VTB
and Nailya had started an affair with the head of the bank
Asker-Zade soon became an anchor at the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK)
Not only did the couple hide their affair — they also blocked any mention of it in the media
All Nailya has ever said is that there is “a man in her life.” But as the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny revealed in December 2019
Asker-Zade had gifted Kostin a bench with a nameplate dedication in New York's Central Park
it was Kostin who helped Nailya get her job at the Rossiya 1 TV channel and arrange interviews with oligarchs such as Oleg Deripaska and Alisher Usmanov for her program
“Deistvuyuschie Litsa” (“Main Characters”)
Kostin even flew with her to Chechnya so that Nailya could interview Ramzan Kadyrov
Kostin took the journalist with him on business trips
Now he has built a house worth no less than $223 million — not counting the value of the land
which was roughly $30 million in 2019 and has risen to almost $56 million today
According to Navalny’s investigation
Nailya previously lived in a less conspicuous house in the Zhukovka-3 gated community — one worth only $2.7 million
Nailya could not have afforded even this house without Kostin's help
The Insider can report that her income at VGTRK in 2021 was $72,600
Kostin's income as head of Russia's second-largest state-owned bank was a record $128 million in 2020
Official Rosstat data lists the average monthly salary in Russia at $960
meaning Kostin's income would be enough to pay the salaries of 11,000 people for a full year
Such a level of personal income is not uncommon for Kremlin officials
“earned” $50 million in 2024
according to an investigation by Navalny's team
As The Insider previously found
the official salary of President Vladimir Putin's mistress Alina Kabaeva — head of the board of directors of the National Media Group — was $8.8 million back in 2018

The fast-casual BurgerFi chain has a new owner
After being bought out of bankruptcy by lender TREW Capital Management in October
the better-burger concept on Friday was acquired by Happy Asker
CEO and co-founder of the Michigan-based parent company of Savvy Sliders
saying a more formal announcement will come next week
But he confirmed that BurgerFi would become a sister brand of the growing Savvy Sliders and other franchise brands within the group
BurgerFi and now-former sister brand Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza were owned by Fort Lauderdale
which was a public company created through a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company
It was a rocky few years for BFI, which saw sales plummet during that period
BFI defaulted on its credit agreement last year and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September
The company also shuttered a number of underperforming units
leaving BurgerFi with 93 locations when it was acquired by TREW in a bankruptcy auction for a $10 million credit bid
17 are company-owned and 76 are franchised
TREW, which is led by former Famous Dave’s CEO Jeff Crivello, also made a credit bid of $44 million for the mostly company-owned Anthony’s, which was very quickly sold again earlier this month to Florida Burger Inc., whose principal is Kuljeet Singh
Singh is also a principal of Burger King franchise group DC Burger Inc.
and Round Table Pizza franchise group Circle Pizza
Savvy Sliders was listed on this year’s Restaurant Business Future 50 list as an emerging brand
with systemwide sales of about $47 million in 2023
UPDATE: This article has been updated to clarify Kuljeet Singh's role in the franchise companies

In a resounding vote of confidence, Sweden’s Asker Healthcare Group AB launched its $2.7 billion initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq Stockholm exchange Thursday, closing an oversubscribed offering that sent shares soaring nearly 18% on their first trading day.
The IPO marks a significant milestone for the healthcare consultancy, which offered 127 million shares at 70 kronor each, raising approximately 8.9 billion Swedish kronor ($880 million). The new shares represent one-third of Asker’s total shares and voting rights, positioning the company for aggressive expansion.
Asker CEO Johan Falk hailed the strong investor interest from both institutional and retail backers, emphasizing that being publicly listed will enhance the company’s ability to consolidate its fragmented sector and support sustainable healthcare initiatives.
“This IPO is a pivotal moment,” Falk said. “It strengthens our growth opportunities and gives us strategic flexibility for future acquisitions.”
The proceeds will be partially allocated to refinancing existing credit facilities, while the remaining funds will fuel acquisitions and new investments aligned with Asker’s long-term expansion plans.

Utica Police investigating death of bartenderUtica Observer DispatchThe Utica Police Department is investigating the death of local bartender Lorrene Asker
who died on Monday after being found with severe injuries
Lorrene closed the bar where she had been working that night
a call was placed by a third party who had been flagged down by a pedestrian who found Asker injured outside the bar
but the third party did not have the answers
and the good Samaritan who located her escorts her to her vehicle.”
the good Samaritan returns and finds Asker in her vehicle
and Asker was transported to Wynn Hospital
where it was learned she had skull fractures and bruising to her spleen
She died from her injuries five days later
Curley said there’s an active investigation into how Asker obtained her injuries
as well as the location of her purse and phone
Curley added that the statements they’ve obtained corroborate one another
the individual who originally found Asker is not currently a suspect

This home water and space heating is typically achieved through burning natural gas in countries with access to natural gas
and through electrically-powered air-source heat pumps elsewhere
More widespread deployment of air-source heat pumps creates increased electricity demand
so solar-integrated heat pumps are also being investigated as another potential alternative to meet current space heating and domestic hot water demands with a reduced draw from the grid
so heat pumps that use other types of materials
such as thermoelectric and caloric materials need to be investigated as “greener” options
Current thermoelectric devices are robust and the technology has already been applied in niche applications such as within the aerospace sector (Freer and Powell, 2020). However, wider adoption and technology is being held back due to the low efficiency of current thermoelectric devices, as well as the sustainability of state-of-the-art materials (Patyk, 2010)
In order for thermoelectric technology to expand into non-niche areas
it needs to be ensured that it can compete on efficiency with incumbent technologies
This will require a concerted effort in developing new sustainable materials with high thermoelectric performance
engineering the nanoscale interfaces in the materials and engineering the devices themselves
Whilst the challenge is huge, the opportunity for nations and companies in this sector is also huge. There are a large number of new thermoelectric materials are being developed, and the market for thermoelectric technology is growing (Harrop and Das, 2020)
now is an ideal time to capture this momentum and expand the role of thermoelectric technology in society and take us closer to net zero
a composition with high-performance at high temperatures with a composition with high-performance at low temperatures
This study discusses a few examples of these thermoelectric materials in more detail below
(A) Examples of semiconducting polymers and dopants investigated for thermoelectric applications; (B) Frontier energy diagrams illustrating n- and p-type doping of an organic semiconductor (OSC) by charge transfer from a chemical dopant molecule
After co-polymerisation with an alkoxy-bithiazole monomer (2Tz) and doping thin films with N-DMBI
both polymers exhibited similar electrical conductivities
the alkyl-spacer containing polymer revealed a Seebeck coefficient double that of the NDI2TEG-based polymer and a PF of 16.5 μW m−1 K−2
the highest reported value for NDI-based materials
the authors attribute the higher Seebeck coefficient to reduced coulombic interactions from the larger host-dopant distance
who showed that increasing the electron density on a polythiophene led to energetics so favourable with a strong p-type dopant that two electron transfers occur
Upon controlling the substrate temperature during the vapour doping of PBTTT thin films with F4TCNQ
they were able to control the degree of charge transfer complex states and thus explore the electrical and thermal conductivities along with the Seebeck coefficients
They found that films rich in charge transfer complex states are more thermally stable when exposed to 100 °C for 10 h as compared to high integer charge transfer fractions and utilising a moderate degree of charge transfer complex states also led to good thermoelectric performance
BF4 anions exchange with F4TCNQ anions; increased doping levels ascribed to the low activation energy of the PIDF-BT-F4TCNQ-BF4 transition state explain the increased electrical conductivity
When compared to the 920 S cm−1 measured via direct doping of aligned PBTTT films with F4TCNQ as the dopant measured in the direction parallel to rubbing
the incremental concentration doped films exhibit an improved conductivity of 1,380 S cm−1 highlighting that simple changes in processing methods can lead to vast improvements
The low electrical conductivity of pristine organic semiconductors is overcome by increasing the charge carrier concentration through chemical doping
although a balance must be struck as the Seebeck coefficient decreases with increasing charge carrier concentration
The chemical doping process is further complicated by the fact that it can compromise the charge carrier mobility due to the structural changes upon doping and that untethered dopants tend to diffuse within and out of the film at elevated temperatures required for energy harvesting
The above discussion has outlined some of the current challenges in organic thermoelectrics
Much effort is being devoted to addressing these shortcomings from several different angles - including semiconductor optimisation
and judicious control of the complicated polymer:dopant microstructure
further progress is still needed in all these aspects in order to realise competitive organic thermoelectric devices
FIGURE 2. (A) Schematic representation of ABX3 perovskite structure. Reproduced from Liu et al., 2019a; (B) Electrical properties of Bi-doped MAPbBr3 single crystals. Reprinted from Tang et al., 2020
Many challenges remain in realising the full thermoelectric potential of halide perovskite
but there are promising candidates for low temperature applications
the intrinsically high electrical conductivity can be retained while reducing the high thermal conductivity due to the presence of the polymer
FIGURE 3. Optimum Seebeck coefficient of the semiconducting single wall CNTs within the diameter range of 0.5–1.5 nm at 300 K. Reproduced from Hung et al., 2015 with permission
The dissimilar bonding and vibrational spectra between CNT and PEDOT:PSS along with the segregation by vinyl acetate ethylene copolymer
reduced the thermal conductivity of the composites to 0.3 W m−1 K−1
The interconnected network morphology (colloidal PEDOT:PSS particles bridging CNT-CNT junctions) guaranteed an electrical conductivity as high as 400 S cm−1 with 35 wt% SWCNTs
and additional meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine also observed a decoupling between the Seebeck coefficient
electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity
The electrical conductivity of these organic composites increased to approximately 95 S cm−1
in the case of MWCNTs and 960 Scm−1
as the concentrations of both the CNTs and PEDOT:PSS were increased
The Seebeck coefficient (∼40 μV K−1 for MWCNTs and 70 μV K−1 for DWNTs) and thermal conductivity (∼0.12 W m−1 K−1)
remained relatively unaffected by the increase in concentration
In addition to its remarkable power factor of -190 μW m−1 K−2 at room temperature
the highly ordered graphene layers also offered a barrier to gas diffusion
resulting in a relatively air-stable n-type composite film
FIGURE 4. Schematic representations of the layer-by-layer assembly of PANI/graphene/PANI/DWCNT multilayers. (A) The fabrication procedure and (B) carrier transport in the multilayers. Reproduced from Cho et al., 2015 with permission
The mixture of CNTs with polymers can bring other advantages, such as increased mechanical flexibility and even stretchability to the as-fabricated composites. For example, Cho and Son fabricated a stretchable thermoelectric multilayer film by alternately depositing 0.1 wt% polyethylene oxide (PEO) and 0.03 wt% DWNT, dispersed with 0.1 wt% polyacrylic acid (PAA) (Cho and Son, 2019)
Because of the weak bond strength and high chain mobility between PEO and PAA layers
the PEO/DWNT-PAA multi-layered composite exhibits a crack-free surface of up to 30% strain and retains thermoelectric performance of 90% of the unstretched sample
The resultant 25 bi-layered composite films (∼500 nm thick) displayed an electrical conductivity of 19.6 S cm−1
a Seebeck coefficient of 60 μV K−1
and attributed to the three-dimensional conjugated network of DWNT
The herein highlighted classes of emerging thermoelectric materials
inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites
have all undergone remarkable progress with many high-performing systems being developed in recent years
While these thermoelectric materials are still in the initial development stage and face a number of challenges
the wide variety of materials and approaches offer many avenues for new material combinations and fine-tuning and optimisation of thermoelectric properties
Organic and hybrid organic-inorganic materials still suffer from the scarcity of high-performing thermoelectric materials
For the development of next generation state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials
further understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of doping
thermal and electrical transport are required
which is a significant challenge considering the often complex systems with several components and a mixture of ordered and disordered phases
the molecular structure and the morphology of their pristine phases or composites e.g.
are also highly important and in many cases difficult to control and understand in detail
a systematic investigation of the critical roles of a conjugated backbone
and polymer molecular weight relationship with the thermoelectric performance can guide future materials selection
is likewise an area that will benefit from a better understanding of detailed structure-property relations for the semiconducting polymer as well as for the possible composite components viewed together
With the ongoing development of tailor-made organic semiconductors for thermoelectric applications
a promising future direction for composite thermoelectrics could be the tailored design of semiconducting polymers with specific interactions with CNTs
precise measurements of key thermoelectric parameters for organic thermoelectric materials
are different from inorganic bulk materials
Seebeck coefficients and in-plane thermal conductivities reported by different groups are measured by different home-made systems
some of which are affected by environmental conditions
the resulting accuracy and comparability need to be considered
A standard for measuring organic thermoelectric device performance does not exist
More work in this area will undoubtedly be helpful for the continued progress and further development of high-performing thermoelectric systems
Apart from growing interest in improving the power factor of thermoelectric materials
the mechanical properties of the new generation of emerging thermoelectric materials and composites are attracting particular attention
Efforts should also be dedicated towards new designs for flexible thermoelectric devices and exploring potential applications
taking advantage of positive features like mechanical flexibility while offsetting drawbacks like low efficiency
Finding the right application for new thermoelectric devices using emerging materials classes will ultimately make better use of the unique properties of these promising materials
While not mentioned specifically in this perspective
there are a number of other materials that are also entering the field of thermoelectrics
Here it is worth mentioning crystalline framework materials including metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks as well as other classes of porous materials such as conjugated microporous polymers
There are still many promising directions for the exploration of materials that are still wide open
making the prospects of thermoelectric materials and devices hugely exciting

Under the umbrella of the Pharmaceutical Committee and as a result of the discussions at the European Commission Expert Group on Safe and Timely Access to Medicines for Patients (STAMP) a virtual Repurposing Observatory Group (RepOG) was set up in 2019 to define and test the practical aspects of a pilot project thought to provide support to “not-for-profit” stakeholders generating or gathering data for a new therapeutic use for an authorised medicine
The group's initial plan was impacted by the outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the launch of the pilot needed to be postponed
This article describes the progress and the activities conducted by the group during this past and yet extraordinary 2020–2021 to keep the project alive and explores on the background of this topic together with the obvious opportunities this health crisis has brought up in terms of repurposing of medicines
termed “champions,” who are generating or gathering data in accordance with regulatory standards for a new therapeutic use for an authorised active substance or medicine
The framework is only intended for medicines already out of intellectual property
The “champion” would typically be a “not-for-profit” organisation
for example an entity or a person from a charity or patient group
The framework builds on existing regulatory tools
namely support from the EU-Innovation Network (EU-IN) and scientific and/or regulatory advice provided through EMA and/or a NCA to provide guidance to the champion
The framework foresees that the champion would in time liaise with the marketing authorisation holder (MAH) of the potentially repurposed medicine
with the expectation that the latter can initiate an application for the new indication of use (i.e.
on-label use) of the medicine by applying for variation
line extension or new marketing authorisation to a regulatory authority
Regulatory framework for the repurposing of medicinal products out of data and patent protection by not-for-profit-organisations
For these purposes, a Repurposing Observatory Group (RepOG) was established in July 2019 with the aim of defining the practical aspects of the implementation of the pilot phase and to report on the success and opportunities of the project
The RepOG initiated its activities by further developing the framework: (i) establishing contact points and the steps for involvement of EMA's scientific advice working party (SAWP) and the EU-IN
(ii) developing materials such as a template for “champions” seeking scientific advice
(iii) a Question & Answer document
and (iv) a dissemination plan targeting potential “champions” as well as MAH with medicines that may be
It can also be noted that EMA adapted the policy on conflicts of interest for patients/experts who would engage in drug repurposing or whose organisation would and which entered into force on 1 January 2021
we all know now that March 2020 is not going to be remembered because of the launch of a pilot project for repurposing
March 2020 will be kept in our minds because the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing a disease named COVID-19 struck our health systems
our societies and our citizens unlike anything else in the last 65 or more years
The EU and global medicines agencies had to reorganise themselves to tackle the health crisis and some ongoing activities were temporarily suspended or delayed
the finalisation of materials to raise awareness of the repurposing project
and the regular meetings with stakeholders were postponed
it has shown the various angles of repurposing
from medicines that have never been approved before but have been the subject of clinical development in other indications (like remdesivir)
medicines approved but still within protection periods (e.g.
among others) to medicines out of protection periods (e.g.
These three examples of clinical trials are platform trials which compare head-to-head multiple treatments and where a “champion” acts as the sponsor
Whilst this mechanism was used in the context of an emergency situation
the importance of a scientific dialogue between partners and authorities for repurposing projects is pivotal
This is intended to be developed in the context of dedicated Scientific Advices as part of the pilot project
The subsequent waves of the COVID-19 pandemic have once again delayed the launch of this project, however, the RepOG has resumed its activities and a proposal for a new date was agreed, the pilot project has finally been launched on the 28th of October (28). In addition to COVID-19 acting as an accelerator, repurposing is also described in the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe (29)
the proposal is also complementary with other important ongoing initiatives like the EU-IN workplan or the STARS project
Finding a smooth way for repurposing provides many opportunities for patients
and research institutions as well as for MAHs working in the innovation or generic/biosimilar side

Visma-Lease a Bike announced on Thursday that Jonas Vingegaard would be starting the Tour de France
with Tadej Pogačar once again expected to be his chief rival
The Slovenian said in 2022 that he bonked on Stage 11
he figured he had eaten too much on Stage 17
the nutritionist at Visma – Lease a Bike
that’s because they have the edge when it comes to fuelling
“I don’t think Pogačar’s team is close to our system, to be honest,” Jeukendrup said to nos.nl
their approach includes a nutrition app and customized advice for each rider
The team now employs 15 chefs who are also nutritionists to leave nothing to chance
“It leads to a lead that is almost impossible for other teams to overtake,” he said
acknowledges the intake numbers Jeukendrup discusses
“The maximum is around 120 or 130 grams per hour
it was believed riders could only consume 60 grams per hour without intestinal issues.”
conducted a study in 2004 that revealed another intestinal transporter
allowing for a combination of fructose and glucose to increase intake up to 90 grams per hour during races
and often pushing towards 120 or 150 grams
This can improve performance by up to seventeen per cent
but their effect ranges from 0 to 2 per cent
especially with high carbohydrate and salt intake
“Stomach problems are quite common in endurance sports
These are quite normal and related to what you take and when
That means managing nutrition precisely is crucial for performance and avoiding issues

EXPERT OPINION BY ALISON GREEN, INC.COM COLUMNIST @ASKAMANAGER
Inc.com columnist Alison Green answers questions about workplace and management issues — everything from how to deal with a micromanaging boss to how to talk to someone on your team about body odor
Here’s a roundup of answers to three questions from readers
How can I turn down a persistent favor-asker
About a year and a half ago, I agreed to have coffee with a company intern who was finishing up her internship and preparing to graduate. I did this as a favor to a colleague — this intern never did any work with my team or department and we never interacted prior to this coffee meeting
she is also the niece of a company VP.) She asked smart questions about my career and department
and about how to approach the job search after graduation
told her I’d forward on any entry-level openings that were shared within my networks
I’ve received emails and LinkedIn messages from her at least once a month asking for introductions to people at seemingly every company she’d applied to (all large organizations in my industry)
I don’t have an appropriate contact for her
but other times I do have a contact and simply don’t feel comfortable calling in a favor on behalf of a person I barely know and haven’t directly worked with
I know it’s tough to find a good job right out of college
but this has been going on for A YEAR AND A HALF
How can I politely tell her to stop asking me
Some people deal with this by just not responding. I don’t normally recommend that, but in a case like this — with someone you met only once and who has been asking for constant help (and especially when you’ve been saying no and she keeps asking) — I think it’s an option if you want
“I’m not the right person to ask for these sorts of introductions since we don’t know each other well and haven’t worked together
for someone to call in this sort of favor with a contact
they need to have directly worked with you or at least know you fairly well
But even though I can’t help with this type of thing
I hope our coffee a while back was helpful
and I wish you all the best in whatever comes next.” And if the messages continue after that
I’m my employee’s landlord and I need her to move
and one of my employees at my full-time job lives in one of them
Can she file retaliation against me if I tell her she has to move
The apartment does not have anything to do with our workplace
I would like to fix the place up and it will take me a few months to do so
She pays less in rent and I know I can rent it out for more
Will telling her that she has to move out cause problems at work
you give her a very generous amount of notice to find other housing (that’s crucial)
and you comply with the terms of the lease and local housing laws… it’ll probably be fine
you need to be extremely careful about being fair and compassionate here (for example
since this doesn’t sound urgent) — because otherwise
Not that she’ll file against you for “retaliation” (unless she has some reason to believe this is a retaliatory move)
but it could harm the relationship and/or your reputation at work among people who hear about it
In general, you shouldn’t rent to people who work for you. There’s too much potential for problems — everything from the appearance of favoritism if you don’t address it when she does something fireable because you need her rent income
to the impact at work if she needs to press you to meet your legal obligations as a landlord
to the power dynamics making it harder for her to enforce her rights as a tenant
I have been diagnosed with IBS and my doctor recommended that I follow a low Fodmat diet
This diet is very restrictive and makes eating out very difficult (among many other things
you’re supposed to start reintroducing foods one at a time to see which ones are causing symptoms
you’re still supposed to follow the diet except for the one food that you’re testing
My company provides lunch as a perk and no one in my office brings lunch from home. I’ve been eating alone at my desk so that I don’t get questions
I don’t want to talk about my IBS at work and I also don’t think anyone is going to believe that I just prefer something like egg salad on rice cakes over work-provided lunch
What’s the best way to approach this with co-workers
“I’m on a restricted diet for a couple of months — it’s very boring and I’d give anything to talk about something else to distract me from these rice cakes
What’s going on with your [subject change]?”
if you’re comfortable giving a little more information
“I’m trying to isolate what’s making me feel sick
so I’m eating a very bland diet for a while.” If that invites follow-up questions
Tell me about [subject change]!” For anyone who doesn’t get the hint after that: “I don’t like to talk about it at work
But it’s nothing to worry about!” (An alternate version of that is
“I don’t like to even think about it at work

Here’s How To Tell—And Why It Matters"Ask vs

educational psychologist and member of the National Coalition on Healthcare
licensed educational psychologist and behavior analyst
Has your work friend crossed a line and asked you a completely inappropriate question
Your reaction to this situation depends entirely on whether you’re an Asker or a Guesser
The concept of Askers and Guessers has floated around the internet for years. Interestingly, its origins are not from a psychology textbook, but from a 2007 message board comment by a user named Andrea Donderi
you grow up with the expectation that it’s OK to ask for anything at all
but you gotta realize you might get ‘no’ for an answer,” Donderi wrote in her post
someone who has grown up with what she deemed as “Guess Culture” will “avoid putting a request into words unless you’re pretty sure the answer will be ‘yes.’” Donderi posited that these two very different ways of asking for a favor can create all sorts of misunderstandings in both personal and professional relationships
experts say Askers and Guessers have very different ways of communicating
and it might all come down to their formative experiences in childhood
First, the Askers. “These types of people may be more blunt and straightforward,” explains Reena B. Patel, LEP, BCBA
an educational psychologist and behavior analyst
The hypothetical work friend from our earlier example—who doesn’t hesitate to ask for help moving on a rainy Saturday—is probably an Asker
“[Askers] need to get something checked off their list and will ask for help to achieve that goal effectively.” Askers are much less concerned about the reaction of the person they’re asking
and more about accomplishing the task at hand
it’s not a big deal; they’ll just ask someone else until they get a “yes.”
have a more external focus when it comes to asking for help
“Guessers may be worried about imposing on others and [concerned] about the answer they are going to get,” says Patel
a Guesser rarely asks for a favor unless they have to
They’d most likely never ask a casual acquaintance for help moving
and would much rather hire a moving company or do it themselves if necessary
“Guessers most likely will not ask the question unless they are certain it wouldn’t be a major inconvenience [to] the person they are asking,” Patel adds
“[Askers] need to get something checked off their list and will ask for help to achieve that goal effectively… Guessers most likely will not ask the question unless they are certain it wouldn’t be a major inconvenience [to] the person they are asking.” —Reena B
Like so many other human behaviors, an Asker or Guesser may have adopted these communication styles as a result of their upbringing. For instance, a Guesser may have learned to walk on eggshells to avoid upsetting a parent in an abusive or unstable household. But Donna Marino, PsyD
notes that these habits might develop not because Askers and Guessers always have drastically different formative experiences
but because of their unique perceptions of the asking styles of people around them
“An Asker may observe a parent who is brusque and asks for what they want
but always seems to get it and is then influenced to do the same,” says Dr
“The Guesser could be a child in the very same family who watches the same situation
but perhaps they are more tuned in to the social-emotional dynamics and notices how the Asker parent is received negatively by other people
they aren’t well-liked or don’t have good relationships.” So
the Asker will typically prioritize results
while the Guesser will prioritize the feelings of others
Let’s go back to your work friend’s last-minute request for help moving
If being asked for a favor like this feels so cringey it makes you want to hide in the office bathroom
If you don’t feel that much discomfort about being asked (hey
Another way to tell whether you’re an Asker or a Guesser? It’s pretty simple, says Dr. Marino. If you are a Guesser, you are likely to be extremely self-aware, so it would already be obvious to you that you’re a Guesser. If you have to ask, well…you’re probably an Asker.
Askers and Guessers have wildly different styles when it comes to asking for assistance. And naturally, this can (and often does) lead to a conflict between the two personalities.
and may feel that they have to be a mind reader,” says Dr
“The Guesser may develop resentment for not having their needs met and at the same time be put off by and even feel burdened or resentful of the Asker’s requests.”
a Guesser may feel that their Asker partner is moving too quickly
but be uncomfortable requesting to slow things down
the Asker might speed ahead in the relationship without considering the feelings of the Guesser
it doesn’t hurt to ask if he wants to come back to my place
He can always say “no.”) On the other hand
two Guessers might spend months in a relationship standstill because they are both too afraid of rejection to move forward
(It’s been a year and we still haven’t said “I love you.” But now it’s too awkward to bring up.) Two Askers may have the opposite problem
leading to a whirlwind romance that self-destructs before it even gets started
Guessers will get more comfortable and may find themselves becoming able to say things even more directly.” —Donna Marino
Askers and Guessers might also run into snags when they’re working together professionally
“Guessers will think about the questions they need to ask supervisors all day and it can really mess with their productivity and well-being at work,” says Patel
assuming you’ll speak up and say “no” if there’s too much on your plate
and that can be a helpful strength to have in an office environment
“Askers are often extremely efficient and people might look up to them for their confidence and delivery [at work,]” Patel adds
that assurance can sometimes be perceived as rudeness or arrogance
“They do need to watch themselves to make sure they don’t cross the line and think before they speak in the office environment.”
Yes, Askers and Guessers can frequently run into challenges navigating their very different communication styles. But they’re not doomed to constant Mercury-in-retrograde vibes—so long as they’re willing to do some work to meet in the middle.
1. Pay attention to body language and social cues
Often, an Asker is so focused on getting a “yes” that they might forget to check and make sure the person they’re talking to isn’t offended or uncomfortable. In the eyes of the Asker, this person can always say “no.” What’s the big deal? But if that person is a Guesser, setting a boundary can be extremely difficult, especially if they’re caught off-guard by a surprise question that feels like it’s come out of left field.
“Askers need to pay more attention to noticing people’s non-verbal cues like facial expression, body language, tone of voice, or hesitancy before responding,” says Dr. Marino. She adds that it might be helpful for Askers to keep a tally of how often they ask for help from others. Have you asked to use your roommate’s salad dressing three times this week? It might be time to buy your own bottle.
Dr. Marino suggests writing a few scripts, so you won’t get too flustered while setting a boundary. “With consistent practice, Guessers will get more comfortable and may find themselves becoming able to say things even more directly, like, ‘No, thanks, I’d rather just stay in tonight,’ or ‘Actually, I don’t enjoy doing that,'” she explains.
Sometimes, says De Los Santos, Askers will double down on their request. “Guessers need to reinforce the ‘no,’ be clear in their answers and stand firm in their position,” she advises.
