James Stewart:This weekend the Vermont Symphony Orchestra will be presenting their Holiday Pops concerts in Barre
Not only is this a chance to share in some holiday favorites
it is also an opportunity to meet the VSO’s second Music Director candidate
Peter is currently the artistic director of the Next Festival of Emerging Artists and also the director of orchestral studies at North Carolina State University
I had a chance to speak with Peter Askim via Zoom and talk about his experience
his hopes for the VSO and what we can expect from this weekend’s pops concerts
but he’s worked with ensembles across the country from Hawaii to North Carolina
I began our conversation by asking Peter what that experience has taught him
music has been a really important part of the community
And the relationship between the community and the musicians
and the music and the performing arts organizations
Every place has its own identity and relationship to this amazing thing that we call music
as I've already had a taste of that spirit and the way that the community is involved in the orchestra and excited about the orchestra
James:I was just looking at your bio on VSO.org
and I noticed that you've been a champion of new music quite a bit
I grew up playing all kinds of different music
was opening up for the Lemonheads at Middlebury College
I'm really excited about composers who bring their own perspectives who tell us something about themselves and their backgrounds and all of our humanity
I love working with the great composers of today
and I've been very lucky to work closely with some of some of today's finest composers
There's just a special relationship that happens
It's very special to be able to ask a composer exactly what did you mean by that
And sometimes the answers are really surprising and lead you to a much deeper understanding of what the composer intended
James:And how would you bring this passion and these ideas to your work in Vermont
Peter:There are things that the VSO is doing that orchestras across the country are just kind of starting to catch on to
There's a real forward vision already in the way that programming is done
in the way that community outreach has done
It's something that's already in motion that I really want to join that moving train; to go to the communities
to go to the people and enrich their lives
and connect with people and create community
So that's what I'm really excited about it
James:Tell us about the holiday Pops concert that's coming up on December 10th
what can we expect from those performances
what I wanted to do with the program was create a sense of joyousness
and to really lean into all of the things that we think of as making the holiday special
but also showing a different side of the holidays
There's some really exciting new pieces that I'd love to share
new favorites of mine that I'd love to introduce; including one piece called “Rocket Sleigh” by Delvyn Case
which is like Rudolph on rocket fuel; super
Some beautiful music by William Grant Still called “Mother and Child”
really thinking about that special relationship that we have in our families and trying to reconnect with those really real and deep emotions and celebrating those things
I love the way that it feels all put together
It's really a journey that we're going to go on and I feel super excited about this; as excited as I've been about any program that I've put together
Just can't wait to just get on stage and get cracking

When conductor and composer Peter Askim talks about the importance of aligning your values with your music making, he’s serious, and The Next Festival of Emerging Artists concert on June 8 at the Kaufman Music Center was a blazing example
Conducted by Askim and performed by the festival’s string orchestra
five radically different pieces came together in an evening that felt truly tuned into the key of now
rhythmic asymmetry and colored with sparkling harmonics and open fifths
There were smiles on the faces of the musicians as they leaned into the wild-driving peaks and earthy valleys
Askim told the audience that the music was inspired by a long-ago audience member’s reaction to another work of his: she felt like she was flying during that performance
and he achieved this again and again with Soar
Curtis Stewart joined Askim and the ensemble on stage for the world premiere of his Essay #1: Leave the People
the work added to the recent slew of genre-shattering offerings by Stewart
who is quickly becoming one of the most powerful voices of our time for racial equality in classical music
Stewart intoned repeated spoken phrases over waves of texture throughout the ensemble – from snap pizzicato to loudly whispered tutti and solo “shh!”
It was as if he was encouraging these words to become a mantra for the audience
we’d begin to absorb these words and their deeper meanings
visceral meditation on how music by Black artists is just now being given a deserved spot in classical music prime time
Yet Curtis’ Essay points out that this is an act of non-regenerative harvesting if the product of Black music is cherished without its source — Black people — being cherished and valued just as highly
Phrases of this tangible aural essay included: “What are American Conservatories Without Blackness?” “What is American Music Without Blackness?” “Who Would We Be…Without the Blues?”
The world premiere of “…there is yet beauty” by Michael R. Dudley Jr. was so pure in its delicate radiance that it nearly felt holy
The work is inspired by a moment from last year: walking outside after a rehearsal in New York City and seeing orange smoke in the air
a particularly breath-taking section towards the beginning of the piece is meant to feel like “the moment when a bird (or a human in an airplane) arrives at the place where the clouds become “firmament.” This piece was beautifully carried out by the ensemble
and the solos from principal viola (Philip Rawlinson) and principal cello (Jaemin Lee) were some of the most luscious and memorable parts of the whole evening
lending metallic charisma and ear-catching drones
Saunders’ writing primed my mind to hear all types of sound as music
and the decrescendo on the final note was so eloquently executed that I heard it seamlessly merge into the tone of the air conditioning above us
It took me more than a moment to realize the piece had ended: what a lovely bit of music magic
Andrea Casarrubios’ Herencia takes its title from the Spanish word that means both “heritage” and “inheritance.” The Sphinx Virtuosi originally commissioned this piece
and Andrea’s program note discussed how she envisioned the many performers of that ensemble on stage and “how each individual has trailing behind them a unique history of unfathomable complexity; an epic that they bring to bear in every moment of performance.” There is always a deeply earnest quality in Andrea’s music
a sense of human truth that runs in arborescent veins throughout its warm exuberances and tangy dissonances
Casarrubios’s work was the perfect choice to round out a concert of music about now: music about today
Carefully curated and unapologetic in its investment in the present and future of art
the Next Fest is one to watch and watch again

İstanbul's LGBTI+ community managed to hold their 22nd Pride March in an unexpected location
The march began around 3.30 pm on Bağdat Avenue
a vibrant location on İstanbul’s Anatolian side
Despite the ban on almost all events during Pride Month
the LGBTI+ community managed to come together using alternative and creative methods
even though they could not publicly announce the route in advance
The Pride Week Committee advised the crowd to disperse for safety reasons by leaving their flags behind
concluded with a brief walk down Bağdat Avenue after a statement was read out
Police later arrived and began searching for LGBTI+ demonstrators in the side streets
Activists making a statement on Bağdat Avenue:

Fifteen participants were detained during the event
Police were seen entering residential complexes and side streets attempting to detain more LGBTI+s
Observers from the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV/HRFT)
and the İstanbul branches of the Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) were present at the march

Before the event, the 32nd İstanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week Committee had shared a contact number for use in case of detentions.
After the march, a rainbow flag was hung from the Chackra building on Bağdat Avenue.
Police conducted ID checks on Tuğçe Yılmaz, a reporter from bianet, Zilan Azad from Halk TV, and observers from SPoD and TİHV. The IDs were returned to the journalists and observers after the checks.
Today, June 30, 2024, marks the 22nd anniversary of our beloved Pride march.
Today, you closed down Istiklal, blocked all roads and squares leading to it. You halted life in a whole city. But you forgot one thing: if necessary, we can pierce through stones, bend time, and once again find each other in our smiles.
Since 2015, we have been contending with those who try to cast a shadow over our Pride March. Our struggle has taken root and thrived throughout the city from then until now.
In 2016, you obstructed our press releases in the streets and squares. We climbed balconies, appeared on television screens, mountains, and bridges, and shouted the voice of Istanbul from every city. We didn't just read one, but 1,000 press releases.
In 2017, they attacked us. While running from the police, we continued to shout our press release aloud. Those who dropped the rainbow flag while fleeing, others picked it up from the ground. Our flag waved across the entire city and will continue to wave.
In 2018 and 2019, we were in Taksim again! After our press release, despite efforts to disperse us with riot police and water cannons, our crowd seeped back into the streets. Tarlabaşı is ours, Beyoğlu is ours, The World Would Tremble If Queers Were Free.
Can your police know our streets better than us?
During the pandemic year, remember our online Pride March and distanced actions on Mis Street?
In 2021, you raided our picnic in Maçka, scattered our vegan food. Three days later, hundreds of us chanted slogans in Cihangir Square.
In 2022, we issued an ultimatum to the governorship. Once again, we flooded the streets, overflowed, sweated, we made love didn’t we. After your unlawful detentions, we greeted 373 people with halays and vegan baklavas.
In 2023, during last year's march, we watched your police chief panic as he arrived in Nişantaşı. You saw us organized and vibrant in a completely different part of the city. You took people from cafes, taxis, those you thought resembled us. You detained tourists, migrants in Repatriation Centers. Our solidarity knew no bounds. You couldn't stop our international solidarity. We gained new comrades. As you feared and tried to suppress us, we thrived from the cracks, we grew.
In these times, we draw strength and reaffirm ourselves from this crowd.
We never tired of deceiving the police, forcing them to deal with us. We called for our existence in various parts of the city every day. You tried to ban actions where we said, "We'll let our hair fly, paint our nails."
You banned our bazaars, concerts, tea events, and parties; we are still waiting for the official decision. We didn't recognize your absurd bans; in one day, we changed continents, partied until dawn, organized in the streets.
For those who couldn't be here today due to various concerns, who are in exile, know that we will meet again.
Our LGBTQ+ friends know how this political climate has isolated them, embittered them, and how it has affected them from this economic crisis and poverty. Don't ever forget that you are not alone, that there are millions like us. The crowd that now seems like a distant past, those people are still here. We never left.
Know this, 12th President, who made us a target in his victory speech: your organized family gatherings, your divisive politics won't work on us. We won't leave the streets, politics, or our lives to you.

The Askim Museum Competition was about designing a museum for a private art collection. The functional program of roughly 2800 sqm had to be embedded in the surrounding urban fabric in an intelligent way
credibly delivering a strong figure/anchor for the region while not overpowering the delicate natural backdrop
The site given is located on sloped terrain
slightly elevated from the nearby city center
It is connected through a single road which terminates at a derelict quarry
The design proposes this derelict quarry to be an alternative building grounds rather than the original site
as the existing topographical changes and the resulting voids within the hillside lend themselves almost ideally for the museum’s functional spaces
Therefore, the proposal’s programmatic distribution and spatial differentiation are directly derived from the conditions given: all primary spaces, i.e. the museum itself, are proposed to be located within existing chasm while the appending library and administration spaces are envisioned to be situated on top of the exhibition spaces
The enveloping surface of these programs is in large areas walkable and serves two main purposes: Firstly- it consolidates the different figures into one cohesive composition and secondly- it merges the surrounding natural landscape with the synthetic roof ‘landscape’ of the museum

April 15 (UPI) -- A pair of Swedish brothers strapped a pastry and a video camera to a weather balloon in Norway to chronicle the journey of the "first donut in space."
"We like to do odd things and this felt very different," Alexander Jonsson told Swedish public radio P4 Vast
"It was really fun to watch the video for the first time
We could see the doughnut hovering above the earth"
The brothers said they launched from Askim
rather than Sweden to avoid the cost of flying permits
The brothers said volunteers with the Swedish Sea Rescue Society retrieved the camera
balloon and soggy doughnut from Lake Vattern after it made splashdown
There was no word on whether the soggy space doughnut was made into a meal

Newest of the pieces was American composer Peter Askim’s Swallowing Fire (2020-21)
it unfolds in three movements over about 20 minutes
“Holding Breath,” contains piquant dissonances and darkly anxious energies
Also called “Swallowing Fire,” the second movement features jagged rhythms
flurries of notes and high searing clarinet lines
“Exhale,” evokes elegiac reflection with poignant melodies and warm

American composer David P. Jones’ Legal Highs (1988), for marimba and violin, uses elements of jazz, blues, minimalism and Latin music. Its three movements bear quirky titles —”Mr. Coffee,” “Menthology” and “Sweet Thing” — that suggest its lighthearted character. Schleuning and percussionist Drew Lang played with rhythmic precision and drive, and fully committed to dynamic contrasts.
Offering Shostakovich’s Prelude and Fugue in D minor (1951), pianist Liudmila Georgievskaya conveyed majestic grandeur in the prelude with broad gestures and a rumbling bass line. In the fugue, she opened with stately elegance, keeping the counterpoint light and flowing, and later explored romantic impulses.
The most experimental selection, Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s NoaNoa (1992), for flute and electronics, sets text from a diary kept by artist Paul Gauguin. The performer whispers text fragments into the flute, while navigating quick leaping passagework and unconventional techniques, including pitch bends, flutter tonguing and multiphonics (two or more notes produced at once).
Electronic effects conjure up ghostly echoes of the flutist’s material and occasionally join the live musician to create a chorus of flute sounds. Flutist Ebonee Thomas emphasized the score’s haunting nature and handled virtuosic demands with ease, but the prerecorded electronics could have been louder.

After three minutes the only lasting impression I have is – MEH
Obviously the language barrier is somewhat of a problem
Our two Turkish correspondents – Egeman and Gokhan – reliably inform me that it’s a muddle of clichés
And that’s just the song. The actual video is like a magpie’s nest of concepts pilfered from other big-name divas – she wears one of Madonna’s old power suits, throws some sass-infused dance moves a lá Beyoncé, and out writhes Shakira in the sand
If Hadise wasn’t so stony-faced throughout you’d almost mistake this for a parody clip
On a side note, I must add that despite the lacklustre single, Hadise is as fierce as ever. And why wouldn’t she be? If she could survive the out of sync khaki clad klutz in Moscow

The big bay gives Charlie Fenwick III his first win in the prestigious race
Charlie Fenwick III carried an invisible weight to the start of the Maryland Hunt Cup—the weight of family legacy
won the race five times as a jockey and three times as a trainer
had won the race twice before as a trainer
“Some of my earliest memories of childhood were right here
walking the course with my father,” said Fenwick III
And now Fenwick III can finally add a trophy of his own to the shelf
Naylor’s Askim to win a stretch duel by a length over James Slater and Coal Dust on April 26 in Glyndon
“I really enjoy riding for Mom and Dad,” Fenwick said
“It was a lot of fun to jump the third and the 13th and have everyone cheer because everyone actually got over it
Usually half of them make it around and half of them don’t.”
This was the first year since 1961 that all the starters finished the race. At post time
The 2008 Grand National winner and favorite Private Attack and the two-time Maryland Hunt Cup winner Bug River both scratched
a three-time winner of the Maryland Hunt Cup
was easily the most veteran jockey in the race
having ridden the course for almost three decades
Meister chose to ride Daniel Baker’s Mr Liberator from his timber string
Blake Curry rode Frank Martin’s Lear Charm—who was second in the 2007 Maryland Hunt Cup—for trainer Chip Miller
who was on his fifth trip around the course
But this time he had new jockey Jake Chalfin in the irons
Patrick Worrall—who won the 1992 Maryland Hunt Cup on Von Csadek when Worrall was just 16—decided he wanted another go at the prize and picked up a ride on Laurence F
while Irishman Shane Burke rounded out the field on Lindsay D
The most challenging of all the timber races in America
the majority of which range from 3’9″ to 4’11”
jumping the best he has in any of his showings
As the field successfully negotiated Fence 3 and Fence 13 (both 4’9″) the crowds cheered raucously
did not take any prisoners this time around
“I feel like the water jump might have cost me two Hunt Cups
and my mother would have killed me if I took the lead at the water jump and then blew it,” Fenwick III said
“I think Coal Dust did not jump the water jump well and lost some lengths over that fence
and none of the horses seemed to be waning
Fenwick III had weeded his way toward the front by Fence 20 and was holding steady coming into his least favorite fence on the course
who has been round the course several times with varying success
was unceremoniously dumped at that fence in 2005 by two-time Maryland Hunt Cup winner Swayo
Fenwick III didn’t waste any time after the fence and urged Askim up the hill to the last
speeding away with Coal Dust just a length behind
But it wasn’t to be Slater’s Hunt Cup
Mr Liberator and Meister were not far behind at third and Rosbrian was able to hold on for fourth-place money
Askim has been around the timber circuit for many years
The 12-year-old New Zealand-bred won the 2006 Grand National (Md.) with Fenwick and then won the 2006 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup with Slater up
The grandson of Australia’s late champion sire Centaine
Askim was the 2006 National Steeplechase Association timber horse of the year
His win with Fenwick gives Stewart her third win as a trainer in a decade
“He’s one of my best hunters,” Stewart said after the race
“Every time we go out hunting the goal is here
Everything I do with him it’s about the Maryland Hunt Cup.”
Fenwick had to make a choice between riding for his mother on Askim or for his father on Make Your Own
but his mother said Askim was ready for the big game
Make Your Own finished fifth with Worrall aboard
This was second-placed Coal Dust’s first successful trip around the Maryland Hunt Cup—last year he and jockey Woods Winants parted ways
It was Slater’s second trip around the course too—in 2006 the Englishman and Sham Aciss bobbled awkwardly before the third mile
‘I want to go again,’ ” Slater said
“I would have gotten back up on the same horse on the same day and ridden it again
So it was kind of my ambition to get back here.”
so Slater was hopeful he might get the call from trainer Tom Voss
“Two years ago I rode Coal Dust after Blair got hurt,” Slater said
Voss has so many good riders around his barn
and the horse does not come out that many times
so I was not sure if I ever would get the chance again.”
Slater was familiar with Askim’s close and was hoping they would not meet in the stretch
“I knew Charlie’s horse is a bit faster than mine,” Slater said
“I just wanted to drag him out so he wouldn’t get there
I was surprised how my horse picked up and kept on going after the water jump.”
Slater admitted he had a few sticky fences
“At the sixth fence I sat up for another stride and he took off,” Slater said
“Then we got in a little wrong at the 12th
but I can’t believe he didn’t go down
he’s fantastic; when he’s wrong
