he will continue throwing bullpens and building up in camp."
Floro started last season as a member of the Washington Nationals and held a 2.06 ERA across 52.1 innings pitched
He was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the deadline
He posted a 9.37 ERA in his 16.1 innings in the desert with a 1.65 WHIP
With the Nationals, Floro was striking out 19.6% of hitters and held a 47.6% ground ball rate
giving up just one home run with the Nationals
and he gave up four homers in roughly a third of the innings he'd pitched with Washington
The D-Backs ended up designating Floro for assignment in September
Given that Floro is a minor-league signing
that provides the A's with some flexibility for when they can look to add him to the roster
he'll have to stick with the club or be subject to waivers
If that timing isn't when the regular season begins
then he'll still be in the organization
One reason that Floro may not feel ready to face batters yet is because of the velocity dip he suffered last season
seeing his heater go from an average of 92.3 miles per hour in 2023
Floro would provide some experience to the A's bullpen mix
The 34-year-old has nine big-league seasons under his belt
The only bullpen arm with more experience is T.J
and is slated to tackle the late innings in 2025
Mason Miller has the most service time among the relievers
then the A's have two relief options on the 40-man roster
who was a waiver claim from the Tampa Bay Rays in November
Sterner has made two appearances for the A's this spring
and has not allowed a run in 1.1 innings of work
Alvarado has not made an appearance for the A's in camp
The Athletics could also add a long relief arm to the mix
all three of which would give the club a second left-hander out of the bullpen

MLB Trade Rumors
By Steve Adams | February 20
5:03pm: The A’s announced that they have signed Floro to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training
split the 2024 season between the Nationals and D-backs
Those solid end-of-year numbers don’t tell the full tale of his season
The nine-year MLB veteran excelled in D.C.
logging a pristine 2.06 earned run average through 52 1/3 innings
Floro’s 19.6% strikeout rate was well below average
but his 6.4% walk rate was excellent and his 47.6% grounder rate was sharp
the big driver of his success was a 2.2% homer-to-flyball ratio (one homer in 52 1/3 innings)
The rate stats painted Floro as a regression candidate
and while the Snakes surely weren’t expecting him to continue on with a rough 2.00 ERA pace
the extent to which the pendulum swung in the opposite direction with Arizona was nonetheless shocking
Floro was shelled for 17 earned runs — five more than he allowed in his entire Nationals tenure — in 16 1/3 innings
After surrendering just one homer through 204 batters faced as a National
Floro served up round-trippers to four of the 75 opponents he faced wearing a D-backs uniform
Arizona wound up designating Floro for assignment and releasing him in late September
Though Floro’s home run suppression in Washington last year was clearly unsustainable
the veteran righty has demonstrated throughout his big league career that he’s better at keeping the ball in the yard than quite literally any pitcher in MLB
Floro has never averaged even one homer per nine innings pitched
Opponents have mustered only 0.54 homers per nine frames against Floro throughout his 402 2/3 big league innings
259 pitchers have tossed 400 or more innings
None has a lower HR/9 mark than Floro (making his Arizona struggles all the more surprising)
It should be noted that Floro’s struggles with the Diamondbacks weren’t simply a function of poor luck
The right-hander also worked with significantly diminished stuff in 2024
but Floro sat 92.9 mph with his heater from 2020-23 — including a 92.3 mark in ’23
that average velocity plummeted to 89.8 mph
His sinker (93.1 mph from 2020-23) followed suit
Floro’s slider and changeup both sat 85-86 mph in 2020-23 but landed at 83.3 mph and 83.5 mph
If Floro can restore some of that lost velocity or simply pitch more effectively with reduced stuff, he has the track record to suggest he can be a valuable piece in manager Mark Kotsay’s bullpen
Since solidifying himself as a big league reliever with the Reds and Dodgers in 2018
His 21.1% strikeout rate in that time is a couple percentage points worse than average
but his 7.2% walk rate is more than a percentage point better than par and his 50.4% ground-ball mark is quite strong
both of whom found their way into late-inning roles last season despite debuting as 31-year-old and 27-year-old rookies
Oakland Athletics Transactions Dylan Floro
Some Toyotas are recalled as much as Floro
Toyota’s have been recalled 289 times
This would be a solid deal if they got the Nationals version of him last year instead of Arizona’s
this is the second A’s deal that was announced by “having a locker set up in the clubhouse” after Luis Urias
Why aren’t the A’s announcing their own moves
It’s relatively common this time of year
It’s not really any different than earlier in the offseason
Most signings are reported when they’re leaked at the agreement stage
and then the team formally announces 2-3 days later after the player travels
since they’re already in camp and the clubhouse staff starts getting things set up for the player
the team’s beat will of course notice the new nameplate and whatnot
The A’s announced their signing of Luis Urias once his physical was complete
the Reds had a new “this guy has a locker now” report per day
Hunter Strickland all filtered in that way
But … tl;dr — it happens plenty
that’s gotta be a Japanese person’s quote
They must be guaranteeing an mlb spot or one of the front runners
Otherwise you’d think he’d be able to get milb deal from a lot of teams

keep Finnegan at Deadline to set bullpenJuly 31st
PHOENIX – Relievers Kyle Finnegan and Dylan Floro were at the center of Nationals trade buzz as the Trade Deadline approached at 6 p.m
All-Star closer Finnegan remained on the team while Floro was dealt – down the hall – to the D-backs. Washington acquired Minor League third baseman Andrés Chaparro in exchange for Floro prior to their 17-0 loss to the D-backs
TRADE DETAILSNationals get: Minor League 3B Andrés ChaparroD-backs get: RHP Dylan Floro
“We fulfilled a lot of our objectives at the Trade Deadline,” general manager Mike Rizzo said
“I think we got a deeper Minor League system
We feel that we’ve got a couple impact players
I think that it’s going to prove that it’s going to be beneficial long term
Chaparro is batting .332 in Triple-A this season
leading Arizona’s Minor League system in on-base percentage and hits
The 25-year-old corner infielder recorded 26 doubles
three stolen bases and 69 runs scored in 95 games
Chapparo was a member of the Yankees organization from 2017-23
Floro, 33, signed a one-year deal worth $2.25 million plus incentives in December
and he proved to be a valuable member of the Nats' bullpen
He went 3-3 with a 2.06 ERA in 51 relief appearances (51 1/3 innings)
He has allowed only one home run all season
Floro began his tenure with the Nationals by delivering 21 2/3 scoreless innings from April 8-May 26
the longest single-season stretch by a reliever in team history (2005-present)
but it’s a little different myself being in these shoes,” Floro said
“But it’s part of it; [you] never knew what was going to happen
Just going to be getting ready in a different uniform today.”
manager Dave Martinez plans to tab right-hander Tanner Rainey for higher-leverage innings
In his first full season back from undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022
Rainey has only pitched in low-leverage situations (29 innings
“Rainey’s going to have to probably step up a little bit here now,” Martinez said
“I’ve taken care of him throughout the summer
so we might have to put him in some high-leverage situations
But I want to see [Eduardo] Salazar pitch a little bit more
hopefully [Jordan] Weems gets better and he can fill that void as well
Martinez called Finnegan into his office after the Trade Deadline passed to let him know he was staying with the Nats
and Finnegan ranks second in the National League (third overall) with 28 saves

“He’s proven that he can handle a closer’s role,” Rizzo said
“I don’t think we were asking for anything extravagant
but we did want market value for a closer that has another year of control
And that had a lot to do with it – we weren’t handcuffed or forced to move a player because his contract’s expiring or financial ramifications
We think that he’s going to help this year and next year
the Nationals have taken steps to build toward their future
Those who remained on the team past the Trade Deadline look forward to being part of it
“Seeing this thing through – you can see it starting to come together,” Finnegan said
“The young talent that we have is exciting to watch every night
To be out there pitching in front of these guys and have them behind you is special.”
The veteran reliever had two very different seasons with the Nationals and Diamondbacks last year
there is a player or two that the staff at Amazin’ Avenue get behind the team acquiring
players like Juan Soto are desired by the overall fanbase
but every now and then a layer stands out among the AA faithful and becomes a pet cause
was coming off a down year split between the Marlins and the Twins
but Floro showed some solid numbers when digging a little deeper
2023 had his second highest strikeouts per nine of his career
and his ERA was almost two full runs above his FIP
four of his previous five seasons had all been excellent
with an average ERA+ of 147 over those five years
The ability to limit both hard contact and walks is what sets Floro apart
but his sinker and changeup are clearly the better of the four
notching north of 50 appearances in all of his full seasons (not counting the COVID 19-shortened 2020)
Knowing all that, the Nationals took a chance on Floro, signing him to a one year, $2.25 million contract and, in 51 appearances, Floro had a very representative half season. He pitched to a 2.06 ERA over 52.1 innings with just one home run and a 3.08 K/BB ratio. His performance was good enough that the Diamondbacks
hoping to repeat their National League pennant victory from 2023
traded for Floro at the July 30th trade deadline
Floro’s stint in the desert was not what the Snakes wanted
just about everything went wrong for Floro
Floro gave up more runs in a third of the innings with the D-backs than he did as a National
and his line drive and ground ball percentages travel in the wrong direction
Floro is entering his age 34 season, and giving out longer than a one-year contract to a reliever in his mid-thirties after a pair of down seasons (or at least down parts of seasons) would likely be ill-advised. However, Floro is just as or more worthy of a flyer from the Mets as other players who have been signed this offseason
the Mets have space on the 40-Man Roster and
the current Front Office is not adverse to cutting dead weight if they’re not producing
With the need for a few more solid relief options
Floro would be a low-risk signing that has very little downside
If he can replicate some of his 2018-2022 numbers
it would be one of the best bullpen signings the Mets make this offseason
Posted by Mathias Altman-Kurosaki | Jan 23
Floro was charged with 17 earned runs and gave up four homers in just 16 1/3 innings – more than he gave up in all of 2023
Floro has never been a particularly hard thrower
but his fastball velocity dipped significantly in 2024
going from averaging 92.7 miles per hour on his sinker to 89.9
and seeing his four-seamer velocity decreasing from 92.3 MPH to 89.8
Floro’s sinker was averaging just 88.4 MPH and his four-seamer was down to 88.2 MPH
Floro’s whiff rate decreased on three of his four pitches
with the change-up being the only one that saw an uptick
After registering a career-high 23.4% strikeout rate in 2023
the lowest it’s ever been over a full season
Floro also saw his ground-ball rate drop from 54.1% to 44.1%
and his fly-ball rate jump from 14.1% to 23.9%
the season wasn’t all a lost cause for Floro
as his overall surface numbers were an improvement from 2023
He also threw a career-high 68 2/3 innings and appeared in over 60 games for the third time in the last four years
Floro has a 1.37 ERA in 30 appearances against New York
Floro made $2.25 million in 2024. He’s not listed on MLB Trade Rumors’ Top 50 Free Agents, but Fangraphs projects him to receive a one-year
Most of Floro’s numbers are trending in the wrong direction and he turned 34 years old this past December
David Stearns has a knack for trying to find ways to fix struggling arms
and perhaps he could take a flyer on Floro
It might be a risk to commit a major-league roster spot to Floro
and he would have to earn his way into the circle of trust wherever he signs
The only way the Mets seem to be a fit is if he’s willing to take a minor league deal and see if he can perform well enough in spring training to break camp

was nearly unstoppable at the plate this week
and stole three bases as Midland went 4-0 in conference play
she went 5-for-5 with five runs scored in game one then drove in four runs in game two as the Warriors’ won 12-6 and 23-7
This is the third GPAC Player of the Week honor for Floro this season
so at the time it seemed like a trade that could turn out well
Chaparro hit 4 home runs in 132 Major League plate appearances for Washington
The same amount of home runs Floro gave up in 16 innings for us..
His first two appearances for the Dbacks were positive
Got a win and a hold respectively in 2 total innings against the Pirates
he got a hold but also gave up a run on 3 hits
He had an ERA of 10.80 along with a FIP at 7.14
In both of those games he entered with the Brewers and Astros having leads already

a veteran right-hander was designated for assignment
this pitcher was one of the best relievers in baseball
he has produced some of the ugliest numbers of any reliever in the sport
Following what was arguably the single worst appearance of his career
his team – the eighth he’s been a part of in his big league career – decided enough was enough
His club added him with the intention that he would play a key role in the postseason
but he quickly fell so far down the bullpen depth chart that he dropped off the roster entirely
Oh, and no, it’s not the guy you’re thinking of. I’m talking about Dylan Floro
Less than two months after scooping him up at the trade deadline
His 2024 season almost certainly has come to an early close
Floro isn’t Craig Kimbrel
He’s never been the Rolaids Reliever of the Year
nor the GameStop Late-Game Stopper of the Year
Floro has been cut from his team’s 40-man roster more times (six) than Kimbrel has been left off the All-Star roster (five)
You can tell as much from the headshots on their player pages
resigned to play another meaningless season of Major League Baseball
Kimbrel is smiling like he thinks he’s pulling off that haircut
That’s the kind of confidence that only comes with nine All-Star appearances:
Kimbrel was a potential Hall of Famer before Floro had so much as a single win
Just dating back to Floro’s first full season
earning upwards of $80 million in the process
it’s Floro who has thrown more innings with a lower ERA
and higher WAR during that seven-season span
I won’t blame you if you’re still skeptical
Floro was one of the top relievers in the game
When the Diamondbacks acquired Floro at this year’s deadline
I thought it might prove to be one of the smartest
A right-handed pitcher who could keep the ball in the yard was precisely what Arizona’s bullpen needed
Not only did Floro have a 2.06 ERA and 1.0 WAR over his first 51 games with the Nationals
but he also had casually and quietly been one of the league’s more consistently valuable relievers over the past seven years
His FIP had been at least 20% better than league average every year
and he had produced at least 0.6 WAR every season
from his first pitch in 2018 through July 30
That’s an average of just over 1.1 WAR per full season
Only nine relievers compiled more WAR than Floro in that time:
It’s such an impressive group of names that I don’t even need to explain why it’s such an impressive group of names
the only one who isn’t a star closer is Taylor Rogers
who still happens to be a former All-Star and one of the 10 highest-paid relievers in the league this year
I don’t mean to suggest that Floro is the same caliber pitcher as any of those other arms
but his place on that list is clear evidence he’s had a much better career than most people probably realize
Floro was a 13th-round draft pick and never a highly ranked prospect
he never lasted more than two and a half seasons with a single team
perhaps implicitly furthering the narrative that he was a journeyman rather than a top-flight reliever
In low- and medium-leverage plate appearances during that span
the league-average numbers in similarly leveraged spots over the same period of time were a 4.24 FIP and a .316 wOBA
the average pitcher was actually slightly more effective in high-leverage spots
“If you want to find the most clutch hitters of tomorrow
you’re better off looking at the best overall hitters of today.” I would say the same about pitchers
it’s beside the point whether or not Floro is inherently worse with the game on the line
What matters is that his results have been worse when they matter most
that has something to do with why he doesn’t have nearly the same reputation as any other reliever who has racked up more than 6.0 WAR over the past seven years
a quick glance at almost any of the underlying numbers would tell you Floro was having a better season
He also had a much longer track record of success:
Outside of a great first-half run with the Orioles in 2022
López was a failed starter and a replacement-level bullpen arm
Floro was a proven reliever getting killed by a .397 BABIP
the Marlins saw López as the wiser investment
Both he and López posted worse ERAs with their new teams and were eventually DFA’d before the end of the season
It would be easy for a casual observer to mentally group them together as similar pitchers
all of Floro’s ERA estimators remained significantly better than average during his time in Minnesota; a .412 BABIP was the primary culprit behind his 5.29 ERA
Floro finished the 2023 campaign with a 2.96 FIP and 1.2 WAR
but his 4.76 ERA and late-September release put a damper on his first trip to free agency
He ended up signing with the Nationals for $2.25 million
significantly less than he had earned the year before in his final season of arbitration eligibility
And while his strong run before the trade deadline this season made it look like he might get to cash in this coming winter
his recent performance means he’ll most likely have to settle for a minor league deal
His opponents produced a .404 wOBA and .394 xwOBA
The 10 earned runs he allowed over his final three appearances were easily the most he’s given up in any three-game span of his career
he allowed back-to-back home runs in his final appearance
It was the first time he has ever allowed two home runs in a game
let alone two home runs in the same inning
let alone two home runs to consecutive batters
Neither would have been a home run at more than eight MLB ballparks
he was at a career high in innings pitched
and he was regularly being asked to record more than three outs
His average sinker velocity was down a mile per hour after the trade (from 90.3 mph to 89.3 mph)
and it was sitting at 87.7 mph in his final appearance:
it seems shortsighted when a team cuts a player immediately following a terrible outing
it’s hard to find fault with Arizona’s decision
All of this means that Floro has now been released in each of the past two seasons
his chances of ever shedding the “underrated” label are rapidly diminishing
It’s not hard to understand why he is so often overlooked
Numerous trades prevented him from establishing himself with any one team
Poor high-leverage numbers kept him from establishing himself as a back-end reliever
The highest BABIP among qualified relievers last season derailed his walk year
and an exhaustion-fueled meltdown ruined what started as the best season of his career in 2024
It’s a trite cliché that reliever stats are volatile and unpredictable
Relievers are subject to wild swings in performance from one year to the next – or one game to the next
long one of the most undervalued relievers in baseball
Following his sixth career DFA (designation for assignment)
it’s about time he received some long overdue DFA (Dylan Floro appreciation)
By Anthony Franco | September 18
The Diamondbacks released reliever Dylan Floro after a weekend DFA, according to the MLB.com transaction log
Floro would almost certainly have declined a minor league assignment so a release was a formality once he was taken off the roster
Arizona acquired Floro in one of the final moves of deadline day. The acquisition cost was modest, as they sent minor league signee Andrés Chaparro to the Nationals
(Chaparro has since made his MLB debut and is hitting .218/.273/.427 in 30 games.) Floro wasn’t the most exciting addition but he’d pitched quite well for Washington
He carried a 2.06 ERA in 52 1/3 innings for the Nats
That success was built on plus control and decent ground-ball rates rather than power
but the Snakes hoped he’d add veteran stability to the middle relief corps
Floro worked scoreless appearances in three of his first four outings
The Phillies tagged him for three runs on August 11
the first of a handful of times that he was hit hard
Floro allowed multiple runs on three more occasions
including a five-run drubbing at the hands of the Brewers in his final appearance with Arizona on Saturday
He finished his Diamondback tenure with a 9.37 earned run average across 15 outings
His already modest 19.6% strikeout rate has nearly halved to 10.7% while the average velocity on his sinker has fallen to 88.4 MPH this month
He’ll collect the remainder of that money
He also unlocked $1.25MM in bonuses based on appearances
He’d be ineligible for postseason play with another team
so he could sit out the final week and a half of this season
Floro would be a free agent in the offseason even if he caught on somewhere in the next couple days
Floro might be limited to minor league offers
His overall 3.80 ERA in 68 2/3 innings is decent production for a middle reliever
but his market will surely be adversely impacted by the dismal finish
Washington signed him to a guaranteed deal coming off a lesser 4.76 ERA last winter
though his 2023 peripherals (23.4% strikeout rate
Floro’s velocity is down more than two ticks relative to last season

Arizona’s 40-man roster stands at 39
Floro had gotten excellent results with a 2.06 ERA and a 2.64 FIP in 52 1/3 innings of work despite a lackluster 19.6% strikeout rate
as Floro’s time with the Diamondbacks has been nothing short of a disaster
The righty has surrendered a 9.37 ERA in 16 1/3 innings of work
and while his 6.30 FIP over that same timeframe indicates some level of positive regression in the future
even that lower figure would still be ghastly production for the right-hander
Floro will be either released or placed on waivers in the coming days
though if the right-hander is waived he’ll surely clear waivers with so little time left in the regular season
he’ll have the opportunity to either accept an outright assignment to the minors as non-roster depth for what’s left of the season or else elect free agency and get a head start on searching for a deal for the 2025 season with a new club
the right-hander still boasts a 3.80 ERA and 3.51 FIP overall this season
Those figures should be good enough to earn him some level of interest on the open market
though perhaps only on a minor league deal given his rough second half

he put forward a sparkling 2.06 ERA and 196 ERA+ (96% above average)
His 1.051 WHIP and 2.63 FIP suggested his success was relatively sustainable
and he had allowed just one home run and 13 walks
while striking out 40 in those 52.1 innings
Floro put out a near-perfect 0.59 ERA over 30.1 innings
a need for the D-backs at the time of the trade
Bryce Jarvis had just been placed on season-ending IR
Miguel Castro continued to struggle heavily
and Joe Mantiply was needed for matchup-based situations
Unfortunately, Floro never hit his stride in any capacity with Arizona. He made just 15 appearances for the D-backs, but after a pair of scoreless outings to open his tenure, it was mostly downhill for the veteran. He pitched to a 6.30 ERA over his first full month with the club
giving up seven runs on 12 hits and striking out only three over 10 innings
as the righty was blown up twice in early September
being tagged for five runs against the Astros and Brewers respectively
and helped balloon his initial 2.06 season ERA to 3.80
he pitched to a dismal 9.37 ERA with Arizona - far below expectations
As a member of the D-backs, Floro's FIP was 6.29, and opponents slashed .333/.373/.580 against him. His fastball averaged 89.9 in 2024, down nearly three MPH from his previous years' averages.
In fact, he'd seen an even steeper decline in velocity after joining the D-backs. Statcast shows that his fastball had been hovering just above 90 MPH, sometimes even above 91.
But as the months wore on, it declined sharply. In his final 12 appearances (all with Arizona), it only topped 90 MPH twice. His final appearance for the D-backs saw an average velocity of 87.7, nearly a full MPH decrease than his previous low.
The downtick in velocity certainly didn't help his effectiveness. It's possible he was dealing with an undisclosed injury or exceptional arm fatigue - something that could also affect his command and movement.
Following said final low-velocity appearance--a two-inning, five-run blowup against Milwaukee--Floro was designated for assignment, leading to his eventual outright release two days later.
On paper, Floro's acquisition made sense. It filled a middle relief need, and the veteran had a career's worth of solid performances. He had accumulated 6.4 aWAR over his eight seasons prior to 2024, and had consistently put forward solid - if not outstanding - ERA numbers.
But whether it was the change of environment that threw him off or simply late-season fatigue, Floro wasn't much of a contributor to the 2024 D-backs. Despite being kept almost entirely out of high-leverage situations, the righty couldn't find a role or rhythm in Arizona, and is now a free agent.
After being released by the D-backs, Floro became a free agent. While anything is possible, he is not a candidate to make a return to Arizona anytime soon, and the club will almost certainly will look internally or elsewhere to bolster the middle of the bullpen.
– The Nationals have backed off Dylan Floro’s throwing program after he reported shoulder tightness earlier this week
though the veteran reliever insisted it’s nothing serious and he has continued to play catch each day
one of only three free agents to sign a major league deal with the Nats this winter
threw a live batting practice session Sunday but said he felt less than 100 percent the following day and reported it to the club’s medical staff
and I just didn’t recover the same as usual,” the right-hander said
it’s been getting better and better the last couple days
Floro has dealt with a similar issue in the past
That experience allowed him to recognize it early this time and gives him some peace of mind moving forward
“What I know compared to where I was in years before
Floro doesn’t typically need a lot of work to prepare for the season
he has never made more than nine spring training appearances
leaving him plenty of time still to build his arm back up and be ready for Opening Day
“When we start ramping it up as we get closer
I don’t need a whole lot,” the 33-year-old said
get out of there and pass it on to the next person
The Nationals have reason to believe Floro will be back soon enough
They have less certainty about Mason Thompson
who was shut down prior to the start of camp with elbow pain that does have club officials concerned
It will still be several more days before the right-hander is re-evaluated
at which point the team will know if he’s going to miss significant time
The Nats have signed several experienced relievers to minor league deals in recent weeks
owns a 4.08 ERA in 247 career major league appearances and pitched well last season for the Reds
he wasn’t tendered a contract in November and found himself still unemployed as camps opened across Florida and Arizona
Law said the Nationals showed interest in him throughout the winter
with assistant general manager for player personnel Mark Scialabba and newly hired pitching strategist (and former Reds reliever) Sean Doolittle calling him several times to talk up the organization
Law ultimately had to choose between minor league offers from the Nats and the Pirates
and though he was tempted to sign with his hometown team in Pittsburgh he ultimately felt Washington offered a better opportunity to make the roster
“It was kind of a tough decision for me to make,” he said
there’s no guarantee you’re going to make the team
And I was thinking about being in my hometown and pitching in front of everybody
It seemed like the Nationals wanted me more
I talked to a lot of people from the organization

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
Dylan Floro #55 of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches against the Houston Astros during the sixth inning at Minute Maid Park on September 07
BY ALEX WEINER
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks designated veteran reliever and trade deadline acquisition Dylan Floro for assignment on Sunday
Arizona recalled left-handed pitching prospect Blake Walston
Walston provides length to a bullpen that threw 7.1 innings in Saturday’s 15-8 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers
Floro threw two frames with five earned runs during the defeat
upping his ERA to 9.37 in 16.1 innings pitched since the trade deadline
Floro came over as a nine-year veteran with a 2.06 ERA and 2.64 FIP this season for the Nationals
The Diamondbacks made two trades for relievers
nabbing former Miami Marlins left-hander A.J
Puk along with Floro to strengthen the unit at a time of transition with Paul Sewald exiting the closer’s role around the deadline
Floro’s velocity took a nosedive after the trade, as his sinker dropped from 90.4 mph in July to 88.4 mph in September, according to Statcast
Similar occurrences happened with his four-seamer
The Diamondbacks traded minor league infielder Andres Chaparro to the Washington Nationals for Floro at the buzzer of the trade deadline — the deal went down while the two clubs faced each other
Chaparro has a .744 OPS in 109 plate appearances in Washington
although he would not have had any obvious role in Arizona this season
Floro has primarily filled out lower-leverage innings but had not earned a higher-stakes role
Walston returns for his third stint in the major leagues this season
In 12.2 innings across two starts and a relief appearance
Walston owns a 2.84 ERA with nine walks and 11 strikeouts
He landed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation on June 6 and missed more than two months before returning to Triple-A Reno
The 23-year-old last pitched on Tuesday for the Aces

The Diamondbacks placed starter Ryne Nelson on the 15-day injured list Saturday retroactive to Wednesday
likely moving Jordan Montgomery from his long relief role back into the rotation
Yilber Diaz threw 71 pitches out of the bullpen on Saturday
the Diamondbacks have 39 players on the 40-man roster
Dylan Floro #44 of the Washington Nationals pitches to the New York Mets during the seventh inning at Nationals Park on July 01
BY ARIZONA SPORTS
The Arizona Diamondbacks continued to beef up the bullpen by trading for Washington Nationals righty Dylan Floro, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro
Arizona will give up a 25-year-old infielder Andres Chaparro
who has spent the year with Triple-A Reno slashing .332/.403/.564
Floro carries a 2.06 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 51 games
He has 40 strikeouts and 14 walks in 52.1 innings
The D-backs had already added left-handed reliever A.J
Puk from the Miami Marlins for prospects Deyvison De Los Santos and Andrew Pintar
Puk has thrown two scoreless innings so far
Arizona also acquired first baseman Josh Bell from Miami for cash or a player to be named later
Bell could be insurance if Christian Walker is out an extended period of time with an oblique injury that placed him on the 10-day injured list
General manager Mike Hazen said after acquiring Puk he would continue to explore the reliever market
Floro joins a bullpen anchored by closer Paul Sewald
Slade Cecconi joined the pen on Monday after transitioning from a starting role
Arizona designated Miguel Castro for assignment
The Diamondbacks remade their bullpen in the second half of the season last year
building it into a strength by trading for Sewald and signing Thompson
The club is in a dogfight for a National League Wild Card spot with two months to play
Fellow wild card competitors have been busy
The Atlanta Braves brought back 2021 World Series hero Jorge Soler from the San Francisco Giants
The New York Mets added to the bullpen with Ryne Stanek and the outfield with Jesse Winker
The San Diego Padres brought in Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jason Adam
Louis Cardinals dealt for starter Erick Fedde and outfielder — and former Diamondback — Tommy Pham
Arizona had fewer obvious holes considering the re-addition of injured starters Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez appear to be around the corner

$2.25MM contract and will be a free agent at season’s end
He’s pitched to a pristine 2.06 earned run average this season
albeit with a rather pedestrian 19.6% strikeout rate and tepid 90.3 mph average fastball
Floro has walked only 6.4% of his opponents and kept the ball on the ground at a strong 47.6% clip
He’s not going to continue to see this level of fortune on his fly-balls — only 2.2% of them have become homers
compared to the 7% mark he carried into the season — but it’s been a nice rebound effort for a veteran reliever who struggled to keep his ERA under 5.00 last year between the Marlins and Twins
Since cementing himself as a viable big league reliever in 2018
He’s had a below-average strikeout rate nearly every season along the way
evidenced by a career 87.4 mph average exit velocity
is a longtime Yankees farmhand who became a minor league free agent this past offseason and signed a minors contract with the D-backs
He’s had a big first year in an overwhelmingly hitter-friendly Triple-A Reno setting
batting .332/.403/.563 with 19 homers — good for a 137 wRC+
Listed at 5’11” and 200 pounds
Chaparro has well below-average speed and grades out poorly as a defender
but he’s posted above-average offensive numbers throughout his minor league tenure
He could eventually emerge as a right-handed corner bench bat/DH option for a rebuilding Nationals club
Arizona Diamondbacks Transactions Washington Nationals Dylan Floro
I was hoping Carlson would go to the Nats for Floro
but wondering who the D’Backs are sending back
At least Floro doesn’t have to go far
I am surprised that Finnegan wasn’t traded
Just looked at the roster and it 100% is him
Definitely not Cecconi; a 40-man spot needs to be cleared
I’m really hoping that Torey won’t have to ride the late-inning arms too hard with this depth
but I’m pretty sure the team is rolling with a 4-man rotation for a short while
That 9th RP should definitely help for a bit
I believe his stuff is too weak to hold that rank
I’d be calling him every time Sewald entered a game
Hate to say I agree on Sewald; he’s not getting swings and misses at a rate consistent with recent seasons
and his peripheral stats are a bit concerning
there should be enough quality back there to go Closer by committee if things get too bad
Seeing reports that it was for Andres Chaparro straight up
now Rizzo is dumpster diving in the minor leagues
This guy hits .332 with 19 HRs and 75 RBI this year
but no one wants to even give him a cup of coffee
He’s thick and slow and supposedly can’t field
The Nats are looking at a big audition next spring for 3B
have a supposed stud Brady House on the farm
and I guess Carter Kieboom still counts as a candidate
Life hasn’t been the same since Anthony Rendon left
Maybe he shoulda stayed — for both their sakes
I am guessing that after the Carlson deal didn’t happen
Rizzo pivoted to trading for a lottery pick
The D-backs acquired the veteran reliever from the Washington Nationals at the 2024 trade deadline in exchange for Andrés Chaparro
The infielder signed a minor league deal with Arizona before last season but never saw a path to the big leagues
Floro was dominant with the Nationals in the first half of last season
A 196 ERA+ in the first half of 2024 set him up to join the back end of Arizona's bullpen
Instead of the dominant veteran the D-backs thought they were acquiring
Floro found himself facing the worst struggles of his nine-year big league career
In 16.1 innings the right-hander allowed 17 earned runs
This saw his 196 ERA+ in the first half go against a 46 ERA+ in the second half
as he was designated for assignment on September 15th
He was released from the organization shortly thereafter
he will look to capture his first half form with the Athletics
who will be calling Sacramento home after their departure from Oakland last season
While it isn't yet clear if Floro's deal with the A's is a major league contract
MacFarland as the only experienced relievers in their bullpen
The Athletics are seeing a large reform from their 2023 and 2024 rosters
with the extension of star DH Brent Rooker
and the signing and acquisitions of starting pitchers Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs

PORT CLINTON - Ottawa County Museum Curator Peggy Debien wants area families to know more about the heroes who lived in the community 110 years ago
Debien was researching her own family history and discovered that Port Clinton had its own group of "heroes" who responded to a Fremont disaster in March 1913
she hoped to share the story of Isaac Floro and his band of heroes from Port Clinton who rescued people during the Fremont flood in late March 1913
"As the curator of the Ottawa County Museum
I was aware of the flood and Floro’s actions
but in researching a branch of my father’s family at the (Rutherford B
I found familiar names of other Port Clintonites who traveled to Fremont with Floro," Debien said
Ottawa County Museum has a list of local men from 1913"I found through 'Find a Grave' that one of those heroes was my great
We did not realize the Ottawa County Museum had the names of all 30 members of the team printed in the booklet titled 'Historical Souvenir of the Fremont Flood: March 25-28
Debien reported that the 1913 flood may be considered the greatest natural disaster in the state
Fremont was particularly hit hard and other neighboring communities responded to rescue people
The flood followed several days of heavy rain and it caused problems statewide
Waitt of the General Relief Committee to telephone Sandusky
Port Clinton and Toledo for lifeboats and life-saving crews
teams from the three cities had reached Fremont
the Ballville Dam had collapsed and the Sandusky River raged through downtown and residential Fremont."
Port Clinton man drowned during rescue efforts"Port Clinton’s Captain Isaac Floro and Captain Nick Tadson led a group of 30 men from Port Clinton to help the citizens of Fremont
they reportedly rescued around 1,000 people before he lost his own life," Debien said
capsized and he was thrown out into the swift river
His body was eventually discovered lodged in the top branches of a tree."
but he was among the three people who died in the flood
"Captain Floro is revered in both Fremont and Port Clinton for his courageous efforts

Postal Service employee who commandeered a mail truck and drove it the wrong way on Interstate 79 near Waynesburg early last year pleaded guilty to all charges Tuesday and will be admitted to a specialized drug treatment court
appeared in the Greene County Courthouse before President Judge Lou Dayich and accepted a plea deal from prosecutors that will allow for all charges to be dismissed if he successfully completes the county’s 18-month drug treatment program
Floro took the mail truck from a post office facility in Moon Township on Jan
and drove it south to Greene County where state police spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop him
He then began driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes of the interstate near the Waynesburg interchange while dodging traffic for about two miles
No vehicles were struck and police were able to stop the truck
although he resisted as troopers arrested him
Floro told troopers he had taken fentanyl earlier in the day
who previously lived in Sewickley but moved to Waynesburg recently to undergo the drug program
answered Dayich’s questions before he could be admitted into the system
which includes meeting with the judge every two weeks to check on his progress
“Do you remember all the stuff that was going on?” Dayich asked Floro about the mail truck incident
who told the judge he has been drug free since September 2023
admitted that he was “slightly” nervous about entering the program because although graduation would mean the dismissal of all charges
any failure could mean he would be sentenced for his guilty plea within 90 days
“But it seems like the right (decision),” Floro said
“If you get through the program successfully
the charges will be dismissed,” Dayich said
adding there are numerous resources available to those enrolled in the county’s drug treatment court
Floro pleaded guilty to felony charges of fleeing police
assaulting a law enforcement office and aggravated assault
and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest
driving under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia
thanked the courts for its “patience” while both sides worked out a plea agreement that he thinks will be beneficial for his client to rebuild his life
and we’re very grateful to this county,” Rothman said
Floro spent about a week in the Greene County jail after his arrest
but he has since been free on $20,000 bond
He pleaded guilty to one summary offense of disorderly conduct in Allegheny County in May 2023 for taking the mail truck in Moon Township

Dylan Floro #44 of the Washington Nationals pitches to the St
Louis Cardinals during the fifth inning at Nationals Park on July 07
PHOENIX — Every so often at the MLB trade deadline
a club’s need will be right down the hall
The Arizona Diamondbacks did not send the ol’ bullpen cart for reliever Dylan Floro
who made the short stroll from the Washington Nationals’ clubhouse to the home side at Chase Field on Tuesday
At the buzzer of the trade deadline, Arizona acquired Floro for minor league infielder Andres Chaparro. Floro had thought he was spared from a second straight midseason trade, and when Nationals manager Dave Martinez gave him the news, Floro thought it was a joke
Long day of travel for the newest member of the #Dbacks bullpen. 😜 pic.twitter.com/e9fP4WrAQX
— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) July 31, 2024
“It was definitely a little weird,” Floro said on Wednesday
two days ago I was sitting over there in that bullpen
I’m glad I was on this side last night (17-0 Arizona win)
but it’s definitely a funny feeling at first
starting to get know some people around here makes things a little easier.”
“I heard him walking in as I was walking down here
so I’m sure it’s awkward to walk across the field,” general manager Mike Hazen said on Tuesday
A benefit of making a move with the opponent is Floro was available to go right away if needed
“Jake Diekman did that,” manager Torey Lovullo recalled
“Jake Diekman was with (Jeff Banister) in Texas
and he just came right over and I threw him in the first game
Diekman got to ride the bullpen cart over and he walked two of the three batters he faced in his debut
As a reliever on a selling team and with an expiring contract
Floro was traded from the Miami Marlins to the Minnesota Twins last season
so the D-backs are his fourth team in less than two full seasons
He has some familiarity in the clubhouse having played with Joc Pederson
“You kind of have an idea something’s coming,” Floro said
“I’ve been doing it the last couple years I’ve been traded
so it’s gotten a little easier … It’s never too much fun
You work with a group of guys trying to work towards something and all sudden
You gotta come and try to learn and see how they work and everything they do.”
Floro expressed his excitement for a chance to compete for the postseason
The 33-year-old has not made a postseason appearance since the 2020 World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers
Dylan Floro of the Washington Nationals is now joining the D-backs in a last-minute deal
A report came in during the final minutes of the Deadline from John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports
saying that the Diamondbacks were "working on a reliever"
Big news soon followed as through a flood of posts on social media it was soon reported that the D-backs and Nationals were in agreement to send RH reliever Dylan Floro to Arizona for Andres Chaparro
Floro has been one of the best relievers in baseball this year
but he has been effective at getting outs and will join what is now a fantastic back-end core of the Diamondbacks bullpen
Important to note is that Floro is a pure rental
General Mike Hazen has generally opted to go after players with control
but with the need for a high-leverage arm in the bullpen becoming more and more clear
Floro will be a huge weapon for the D-backs as they continue to battle in a highly contested Wild Card race
The Diamondbacks in this deal send out their 2nd corner infielder from Reno
with Chaparro following Deyvison De Los Santos to the NL East
Chaparro has largely benefitted from AAA Reno's friendly hitting environment
putting up a 137 wRc+ in 95 games with Reno in 2024
after signing a Minor League Deal with Arizona and seeing no clear path to the MLB Roster
This deal for Dylan Floro adds to what has been a successful deadline for the Diamondbacks
while not dipping too far into prospect capital
The Washington Nationals agreed to terms on one-year contracts with right-handed pitcher Dylan Floro and third baseman Nick Senzel on Tuesday
Washington designated infielder Jeter Downs for assignment
Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements
went 5-6 with a 4.76 ERA and seven saves in 62 relief appearances in 2023 between Miami and Minnesota
He struck out 58 hitters in 56.2 innings of work
Floro is one of only eight pitchers in Major League baseball to record at least 30 saves and 25 holds since the beginning of the 2021 season
joining new teammate Kyle Finnegan on that list
He ranks seventh among Major League relievers with 0.45 home runs allowed per 9.0 innings since the start of the 2020 season (10 HR/198.2 IP)
Floro is 26-22 with a 3.42 ERA and 32 saves in 330 games over eight Major League seasons with the Rays (2016)
California native has pitched in 14 Postseason games in his career and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers to the 2020 World Series title and the 2018 National League pennant
He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 13th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of California State University - Fullerton
is coming off a season in which he hit a career-high 13 home runs and matched a career-high with 42 RBI in 104 games for the Cincinnati Reds
six stolen bases and 49 runs scored while hitting .236 with a .399 slugging percentage
second base (6 G) and designated hitter (4 G) in 2023
The right-handed hitting Senzel batted .347 with a .619 slugging percentage against left-handed pitching last season
with nine of his 13 home runs coming off left-handed pitchers
Senzel has slashed .286/.334/.459 in 409 plate appearances against southpaws
Senzel was named National League Player of the Week April 30 after leading National League hitters in batting average
one stolen base and eight runs scored in six games during the week
one walk and 10 runs scored in his final 19 games of the season
Senzel was selected second overall in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee
appeared in six games for the Nationals in 2023
The Nationals now have 40 players on their 40-man roster
1:11pm: The Cards and Nats have indeed had ongoing talks on a swap of the two Dylans and could complete a deal this afternoon, tweets Mark Feinsand of MLB.com
It’s not yet clear if other players are involved
the notion of trading Carlson for a middle-relief rental would’ve been unfathomable (though it’s of course possible that a theoretical Dylan-for-Dylan swap would also include additional minor league players to balance out the scales)
Carlson isn’t all that far removed from ranking among the game’s top 10 to 20 overall prospects
The former first-rounder’s bat has wilted since a solid 2021 showing
$2.25MM contract and will be a free agent at season’s end
He’s pitched to a pristine 2.06 earned run average this season
He’s not going to continue to see this level of fortune on his fly-balls — only 2.2% of them have become homers
compared to the 7% mark he carried into the season — but it’s been a nice rebound effort for a veteran reliever who struggled to keep his ERA under 5.00 last year between the Marlins and Twins
He’s had a below-average strikeout rate nearly every season along the way
and has offset that with habitually strong command
Floro is surely just one of many bullpen arms the Cardinals have looked into in the final hours leading to today’s 5pm CT trade deadline. Concurrently, they’re looking for trade partners for Carlson and the already-designated-for-assignment Giovanny Gallegos
The Cards may not have another blockbuster along the lines of yesterday’s three-team swap in them
but they could still have multiple trades in store today
St. Louis Cardinals Washington Nationals Dylan Carlson Dylan Floro
John Brebbia to the Cardinals for cash or PTBNL from the Dodgers
The nats should be selling not buying dylan carlson
getting Carlson for Floro is basically like the Nats getting nothing for something
work out a deal to bring the home town kid Reid Detmers from the angels
This team is sputtering too much to give up anything of value for rental players
Any trades of consequence need to be looking at 2025
Imagine if they had thought that way in 2006
There is no Chris Carpenter or Albert Pujols on this team
Pretty sure they didn’t have Pujols on the team at this point either
Mulder went down too though that was probably a good thing
But that team was not looking good at this point in the year
Baseball is all about staying in contention and seeing who gets hot in Sept
Dodgers are the classic example on the other side of this
They look great all season long and then choke in the playoffs
won a gold glove and should have won the MVP
Howard had a great year but Pujols was better
I just vaguely remember him going on the DL that summer
Pujols had over 500 at bats in ‘06 and 49 bombs
Didn’t hit particularly well in the series
Wainwright was on the mound for the last out ( remember he was “filling in” for Isringhausen?)
Didn’t have to pitch again as the series only went 5 games
I remember the overconfident newspaper headline in Detroit prior to the series was “Tigers in 3”
espn.com/mlb/news/story?id=2470238
I was only saying the 2006 team did not look good at this point in the season either
the blues should have probably sold off the team at the end of January 2019 as well
…and that pesky problem of not being able to hit RHP
Hasn’t really hit lefties this year either
but that’s more of a recent development and may actually be do to pretty much no playing time
The righty problem has been there his entire career and isn’t going away
The Nats would take a platoon player for 60 games of a middle relief pitcher methinks
I still think that he’ll go on to be a good player… If he plays
still don’t think he’s a regular
the Cardinals need to make some 26 man roster moves to accommodate Pham and Fedde
What you get in return is not watching him blow games in the 9th inning anymore
Give me Carlson and two top 20 minor leaguer’s and you can have Doval
He’s turning into a me only player and not a team player
When they were having their postgame march into the dugout after Sunday’s near blown save
Melvin greeted all the players with a nice handshake and a couple words
when Doval’s turn came BoMel barely touched him and said nothing
Hicks could be the closer in the next few days
Zero chance a team gives up someone from their major league roster and two top 20 prospects for a guy struggling so much this year
Two of those three are reasonable with Doval’s control
but there’s a ton of risk there for any acquiring team
not really home town if they only went to college close
Carlson was a main piece of a speculated Cardinals offer for Soto
the Cards were never going to be able to beat what the Padres offered
seems that went well for the Nats avoiding that.
I keep wondering when I’m gonna click onto MLBTR and see the headline
Or maybe after Saturday’s outing they’ve solved their pitching issues with him
It’s a he’s the only one on the bench that can play SS thing
He would have (most likely) been DFAd when Edman returned
But agreed…he’s been a waste of a roster spot
Go bring DeJon back since they love bringing the oldies back
Fermin has played less than 30 games at short in the last two years in the minors
so it would be a huge risk to DFA Crawford and rely on Fermin as a backup
There’s no one else on the 40 man who can do it
I would guess Crawford mentoring Winn is probably more valuable to them than the minimal improvement Fermin would be by using him anyways even without taking the risk into account
I was hoping for that the last few weeks with Edman rehabbing
With Edman available you would have thought they HAD to drop Crawford since Edman is capable at SS
With Edman sent out then you can’t really drop Crawford
I know Saggese was getting in reps at SS but he isn’t ready for a call up
They never played Fermin at SS while he was up and he did not inspire confidence with the bat while here
While I hate 2 bench positions taken by un versatile Crawford and Carpenter
The good news is that Crawford has barely had to play due to Winn being solid from the get go
The whole idea was that Crawford would provide solid support in case Winn was not ready
Next year build the bench without Carpenter and Crawford please
The depth chart shows Donovan after Crawford
Donovan has played a grand total of 8 games at short
He’s nowhere near as good defensively at short as Crawford or Wynn
Left and Right and had close to 400 at bats
Meant to respond to the guy who wanted to DFA Crawford
2025 he won’t be and his contract is up anyway
Crawford is carrying a TON of extra weight
He’s not the great SS we all remember
At this point I don’t see how there’s justification for him taking up a roster spot
The Cards still need another front line starter and a another right handed bat
that would be as stupid as yesterday’s trade was smart
I’m good with this even if the Cardinals need to ad a lottery ticket prospect or two to compete the deal
Carlson needs to be removed from the roster to make room for Pham
I hope both guys get called “new Dylan” in the clubhouse for the rest of the year
six current MLB players have the given name Dylan or Kyle
So if you want to stand out in a clubhouse today
Cardinals will be 2 for 2 on trading players of the same name after Tommy Edman was moved in the deal that brought Tommy Pham
I swear he gets talked about a lot but who actually wants this guy
If you have room on the roster (as the Nats do) and are building for the future rather than today (as the Nats are)
There is no sunk cost (we are sending over a reliever on an expiring contract) and if he proves unsalvageable
Mike Rizzo’s approach is opportunistic
He collects players and sees who he can elevate
Lots of players get released: but he got a good return for Winker this year and Candelario last year
Dylan Floro is better than John Lester and we can only hope Carlson can be as good as Lane Thomas
The cardinals have given a lot of good young players away over the years
Per @Gambo987 The #Dbacks are acquiring RHP Dylan Floro He has a 2.06 ERA in 51 games and 52.1 innings with 40 strikeouts and just 13 walksA strong set-up man joins the #Dbacks and just has to walk across the stadium at Chase Field

Dylan Floro’s Anticipated Entry into Athletics Bullpen
The Athletics bullpen is brimming with anticipation as seasoned pitcher Dylan Floro readies himself for a potential late entry
Despite signing a Minor League deal with the A’s
Floro acknowledges that he is not currently in a condition to take on hitters and will continue honing his skills through bullpen sessions and camp preparation
Floro’s Seasonal Transition and Performance
Floro’s journey in the 2024 season saw him start with the Washington Nationals
boasting a stellar 2.06 ERA across 52.1 innings pitched
a mid-season trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks led to a stark decline in his performance
culminating in a disappointing 9.37 ERA over 16.1 innings with a 1.65 WHIP
and home run allowance between the two teams underscored the challenges he faced in adapting to his new environment
Flexibility and Experience in Athletics Bullpen
Floro’s addition provides the A’s with roster flexibility
allowing them to strategically incorporate him when deemed ready
Despite facing a velocity dip in the previous season
dropping from an average of 92.3 to 89.8 mph
Floro’s seasoned experience spanning nine big-league seasons offers valuable depth to the Athletics bullpen
Floro’s potential contribution adds a layer of maturity and expertise to the team’s pitching arsenal
In the event that Floro is not prepared for Opening Day
the A’s possess alternative relief options in Justin Sterner and Elvis Alvarado
the potential inclusion of long relief arms such as Brady Basso
and Hogan Harris could further diversify the bullpen’s capabilities
hinted at through recent lineup announcements
showcase a strategic approach to maximizing pitching talent and depth for the upcoming season
As the Athletics eagerly await Dylan Floro’s integration into their bullpen
the team’s dynamic mix of experienced veterans and promising newcomers sets the stage for an exciting season ahead
With strategic planning and a focus on optimizing pitching resources
the A’s aim to solidify their pitching staff and make a strong impact in the 2025 MLB campaign
An unforeseen turning point unfolds this season
as one modest offseason trade blooms into a demonstration of raw talent and determination
Historical Trade Context In what was once..
where tensions exploded into physical confrontations off the field
The unsettling incident overshadowed the bitter defeat
A moment on the mound can define an entire game
this was a night of missed opportunities and personal frustration
Engaging Opening On a luminous Monday night shimmering with possibility
a singular play transcended the bounds of sport
etching itself into the hearts of those in attendance
A Thrilling Encounter Under the Lights In a game that defied expectations from start to finish
the Mariners and Athletics delivered an extra-inning spectacle that left fans on..

PHOENIX – A week of trade deadline frenzy reached its final hour this evening
the Nationals having previously dealt three key players and now waiting to see if there would be any last-minute takers for their two remaining available relievers
they did find a deal they liked for Dylan Floro
They did not find one to their liking for Kyle Finnegan
Floro was traded to the Diamondbacks for Triple-A corner infielder Andrés Chaparro during the final minutes leading up to the 6 p.m
giving the veteran right-hander a chance to move to the other clubhouse at Chase Field and potentially face his former team tonight
stays put and will remain the Nats closer for the remainder of this season while remaining under club control for 2025 as well
and we can put this behind us and focus on winning games," said Finnegan
who for the third straight summer heard his name come up in trade deadline rumors but never was dealt
Having already traded Hunter Harvey to the Royals prior to the All-Star break
then Jesse Winker to the Mets and Lane Thomas to the Guardians over the last three days
the Nationals reached deadline day with only two expected trade candidates in Finnegan and Floro
Finnegan always loomed as general manager Mike Rizzo’s toughest decision this summer
because he’s under club control for another season and he has blossomed into one of the sport’s best closers
with no clear in-house alternative to replace him after Harvey was dealt away
Padres and Royals paying hefty prices to acquire late-inning arms
That only emboldened Rizzo to set a high asking price for Finnegan
especially in the wake of Monday night’s five-run meltdown in the bottom of the ninth
"This guy pitches at the back of a baseball game
He's proven that he can handle the closer's role," Rizzo said
"I don't think we were asking for anything extravagant
We weren’t handcuffed or forced to move a player because his contract’s expiring or financial ramifications
We think that he's going to help us this year and next year."
Finnegan entered the day with 28 saves in 32 attempts
a 3.48 ERA (more than a full run higher than it was entering Monday) and 1.091 WHIP in 46 games
Originally signed to a major league contract in 2020 after six seasons toiling in the Athletics’ farm system
the right-hander slowly grew into the closer’s role and over 272 total appearances with the Nationals has 78 saves
As much as he insisted he tried to block out the noise in recent days
he admittedly was caught off-guard when he was summoned to manager Davey Martinez's office a few minutes after the deadline passed today
thinking he might have been part of a last-minute deal
When Martinez greeted him with a smile and said: 'You're a Nat,' the right-hander breathed a sigh of relief and smiled back
cause they're all my favorites really," Martinez said
"But he's the one guy I count on to pitch at the back end of the bullpen
It's nice that he's still here and he's going to get an opportunity to save games for us."
"It's great to have the confidence of your GM and your manager," Finnegan said
"I owe a lot in my career to Riz and Davey
They've given me unbelievable opportunities and have really helped me grow as a player
given his pending free agency at season’s end and track record as a reliable setup man with prior postseason experience with the Dodgers
The 33-year-old enjoyed a fine four months with the Nats
delivering a 2.06 ERA and 1.051 WHIP in 51 appearances
only giving up his first homer of the season Sunday in St
The asking price for Floro was never going to be exorbitant
but the Nationals did want something of value
he accepted an offer from the Diamondbacks and sent Floro across the hallway for Chaparro
a 25-year-old corner infielder who has 19 homers
75 RBIs and .967 OPS at Triple-A Reno this season
The Pacific Coast League has notoriously inflated offensive numbers
but Rizzo believes Chaparro can hit anywhere he plays
you can see this guy has big time power," the GM said
"He's a corner bat that we thought the reward really outweighed the risk
he's got big pop and can drive in runs and has been a really good minor league player that we think with a few tweaks can translate into the big league level."
didn't need much time to pack up his stuff
say his goodbyes and then walk a few hundred feet down the service level at Chase Field to the home clubhouse
And what would it be like if he pitches tonight against the Nationals
hanging out with this morning and last night," said Floro
who will still stay at the Nats' team hotel tonight

now finds himself navigating a new chapter in his baseball career with the Oakland Athletics
As the Athletics recently inked a minor league deal with the talented reliever
Floro eagerly anticipates the opportunity to reignite the spark that defined his stellar 2020 season
The Athletics wasted no time in extending an offer to Floro
setting up a fresh start for the seasoned right-hander
Floro’s presence was already palpable in the Athletics’ clubhouse
signifying a promising new beginning for the player and the team alike
This move marks a significant shift for Floro
who previously donned the Dodgers’ colors for three consecutive seasons
Floro showcased remarkable resilience and skill
His impressive 2.59 ERA and flawless 3-0 record underscored his pivotal role in the Dodgers’ bullpen
Despite a brief absence from the Wild Card Series roster
Floro swiftly rejoined the team for the NLDS
making invaluable contributions during the postseason
evident in his 1.48 walks per nine innings pitched
solidified his reputation as a reliable reliever
Floro’s trajectory took a challenging turn post-2020 season
A trade to the Miami Marlins saw him part ways with the Dodgers
paving the way for a stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks

LOUIS – After a two-night stretch in which they drove in 24 runs with a flurry of clutch hits
the Nationals found themselves in need of just one more late this afternoon if they wanted to pull off a rare sweep of the Cardinals
That hit proved far more elusive in the daylight than it did the previous two evenings
Louis to deliver the final blow this afternoon with an even rarer development
Paul Goldschmidt’s leadoff homer off Dylan Floro in the bottom of the ninth propelled the Cardinals to a 4-3 walk-off win
leaving the Nats to be content with a series victory but not a weekend sweep against a quality opponent
It was the first home run surrendered this season by Floro
whose ERA was down to 1.89 prior to that final at-bat
The Nationals got another quality pitching performance from starter DJ Herz
who allowed two runs over five innings while striking out eight
even though Floro recorded four outs on a mere 10 pitches to get out of the seventh and eighth innings
But unable to push across the go-ahead run late
they were left to ask Floro to re-take the mound for the bottom of the ninth and hope he could keep the game tied
Ferrer to face Brendan Donovan and Lars Nootbaar
saving closer Kyle Finnegan for a 10th inning that ultimately never came
"We had (Ferrer) up for the lefties coming up," Martinez said
"We just wanted to try to get that one hitter
the veteran right-hander spun around in horror and watched as Goldschmidt’s blast off a high sinker sailed over the left field wall for the game-winning homer
"It was one of those things I kind of felt it out of the hand," said Floro
The Nationals’ decision to demote Herz to Triple-A earlier this month was about managing his innings
trying to conserve something for later this season
But those two weeks in the minors alone aren’t going to do the trick
They’re going to have to find ways to minimize his workload in the majors the rest of the way as well
"He only threw four innings when we sent him down," Martinez said
"So I want to limit him to about five innings
we'll try to stretch him out a little bit."
What that has looked like over the last week: Herz has been pulled after five innings of two-run ball in each of his starts since returning
his pitch count coincidentally at 79 in each instance
he easily could’ve kept going for quite a while longer
Herz showed off an impressive combination of fastball command and life during this start
He threw 56 of those 79 pitches for strikes overall and got Cardinals hitters to whiff on an impressive 15 of their 27 swings against the fastball
"I told (catcher Riley Adams) in the second: 'The fastball's got some git today,'" Herz said
I told him and we just kind of rolled with it."
He served up a blast to Willson Contreras in the bottom of the first
Contreras’ fourth homer against the Nationals in seven games this season
And he allowed a run-scoring triple to Pedro Pagés in the top of the second
retiring 10 of the last 11 batters he faced
he finished with eight strikeouts and only one walk across five strong innings
"I wanted to stay sharp over the break," he said
That's all the things I want to see from myself."
A Nationals lineup that took a whopping 38 at-bats with runners in scoring position through the first two games of the series gave itself plenty more chances in today’s finale
The team only recorded one hit in such situations through seven innings but found other ways to get guys home and take the lead against veteran starter Miles Mikolas
With runners on second and third and nobody out in the third
Lane Thomas ripped his second double of the afternoon
extending his league-leading streak of games reaching base to 25 and tying this game at 2-2
3 spot in the lineup to account for the trade of Jesse Winker to the Mets
the 21-year-old ripped a base hit down the right field line and then galloped his way to his first career triple
That put him in position to score moments later on Juan Yepez’s sacrifice fly to right
giving the Nationals their first lead of the game
It's fun to watch him get around the bases."
Robert Garcia gave up the tying run with two outs in the seventh
issuing a walk in front of back-to-back singles
the latter of them a well placed grounder to the left-side hole just past Abrams’ reach
each team hoping to execute enough in the late innings to emerge victorious
"We've just got to come back tomorrow and try to go 1-0."
They already have one of the best closers in the game in Mason Miller
but then they added José Leclerc to the mix as the eighth inning arm to go along with solid rookies from 2024 in Michel Otañez and Tyler Ferguson
the A's also brought in veteran reliever Dylan Floro
who spent time last season with the Washington Nationals
Martín Gallegos of MLB.com reported that Floro has a locker inside the A's clubhouse in Mesa
Floro was traded by Washington at the deadline
He finished the year with a 3.80 ERA in 68.2 innings pitched
Floro was striking out 19.6% of hitters and held a 47.6% ground ball rate
The righty also had to make some changes in 2024
with the velocity on his four-seamer dropping from 92.3 miles per hour in 2023
His four-seamer had been his main pitch the previous season
but with the velo dip he had to mix things up
The biggest change was flipping his two fastballs
and dropping his four-seam usage to 15.8% from 34.1%
With his sinker eating up most of his usage
it became a little more predictable for hitters to know what was coming
and slider (22%) accounted for his main three offerings
As you can tell by the nearly 48% usage rate on his sinker last season
those pitches weren't mixed quite as much this past season
The A's officially announced the move this afternoon
Floro has a decent chance to break camp with the team
24-year-old Grant Holman made his big-league debut in 2024 and finished the year with a 4.02 ERA (3.87 FIP) in 15.2 innings
but he wasn't being used in the leverage same roles as Otañez and Ferguson
and is likely seen as a middle relief arm with three options remaining
which means he could start the year in the minors now that Floro is on board
The other pitcher in the A's bullpen that could be on the chopping block is Rule 5 draftee Noah Murdock
then it's likely he'll make the club over Holman
If the A's were to not include Murdock on their 26-man roster at any point during the 2025 campaign (barring injury)
then he would have to pass through waivers before being offered back to his original team
Floro has averaged 61 innings per season with a 3.59 ERA
three of those seasons were when he was still throwing a touch harder
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Sunday they designated veteran reliever and former Los Angeles Dodger Dylan Floro for assignment
The veteran right-hander cleared waivers and was released on Tuesday
The move cleared a spot on the Diamondbacks’ roster for left-hander Blake Walston
signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals during the offseason but was traded to the Diamondbacks in a last-minute deal just before this year’s July 30 deadline
with first baseman Andres Chaparro heading to Washington in return
Floro was in Arizona as the Nationals were playing the Diamondbacks
Floro was performing well with a 2.06 ERA and a 2.64 FIP over 52.1 innings
his stint with the Diamondbacks was problematic
Shohei Ohtani Pitching Update, Bobby Miller Out of Rotation, Ohtani Homers, Dodgers Lose to Marlines https://t.co/UxSdNdo7aK
the right-hander still holds a 3.80 ERA and 3.51 FIP for the season
These numbers should attract some interest on the open market
though it may be limited to minor league deals due to his rough performance in the second half of the season
Floro was hoping this season would be somewhat of a redemption after a rough 2023 season when he posted a 5-6 record with a 4.76 ERA and seven saves over 56.2 innings
split between the Miami Marlins and the Minnesota Twins
“It wasn’t a good year for me, I know that,” Floro said
He won a World Series with Los Angeles in 2020

With the loss the D-backs' record drops to 79-64 and their lead over the Mets in the NL Wild Card shrinks to just a half game
The Diamondbacks' pitching is among the worst in the league
There were no signs of improvement following this game
but at this point unsurprising outing for Eduardo Rodriguez Saturday afternoon against the Astros
The Diamondbacks had jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to a two-run second inning that included an RBI base hit by Kevin Newman
The second baseman also hit a solo shot into the Crawford Box in the fourth
Rodriguez managed to work around five hits
to allow only one run through the first three frames
He was anything but sharp however and it was no shock when he had a fourth inning meltdown
With one out Rodriguez issued two walks and hit a batter before surrendering a two-run single to the number nine hitter Chas McCormick
He later left a sinker over the middle to Yordan Alvarez and the big man knocked an RBI single into right
An error by Eugenio Suarez on a routine grounder extended the inning
and Rodriguez responded by walking Alex Bregman with the bases loaded
Rodriguez left the game trailing 5-3 in what was the second straight four-inning start
walked three and struck out just one batter
he had trouble executing and finishing off batters
The Diamondbacks already had to send one high-priced veteran lefty to the bullpen in Jordan Montgomery
There is no room to do the same with Rodriguez
While Rodriguez has not not been giving up the really big numbers like Montgomery had been
Rodriguez' outings are getting increasingly noncompetitive
Rodriguez has a career low 5.5 K/9 ratio and a 5.83 ERA
There is little consolation in his 4.85 FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching)
He's not getting swing and miss on anything but the change up at this point
The Diamondbacks have 19 games remaining in the regular season
Rodriguez is in line to make three of them
it's fairly clear that Rodriguez would not be part of the playoff rotation
Thats a tough pill to swallow for the Diamondbacks who have had nothing but bad luck with recent
The D-backs got a fourth run in the sixth on a homer by Eugenio Suarez off of Astros Starter Yusei Kikuchi
Dylan Floro relieved Rodriguez and retired the side in order in the fifth
He then proceeded to give up five runs in the sixth inning on four singles and a three-run homer by Jeremy Pena
The Floro trade looked like a great move at the time to shore up the bullpen
He was brought over from the Nationals at the deadline sporting a 2.06 ERA and 2.64 FIP to back it up
He's now allowed 12 runs in 12.2 innings pitched as a Diamondback
Arizona scratched out a run in the top of the seventh
Slade Cecconi gave up a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to close out the scoring at 11-5
Arizona will look to salvage the series finale behind Ryne Nelson
who will be opposed by future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander
The game will be broadcast by ESPN Sunday Night Baseball
