Inside Kasaan’s carving shed in early May, Eric Hamar is hard at work.
Hamar is a Haida artist and carver, and he spends his days carving in the workshop in Kasaan, a small village of about 30 people on Prince of Wales Island. The thick smell of cedar in the air, Hamar’s surrounded by canoes, paddles, a half-carved totem pole, and tools.
On this particular day, he was busy getting ready for Celebration, the huge every-other-year gathering of Indigenous people in Southeast Alaska. The event lasts four days and is the largest gathering of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples in the world.
Hamar’s preparation for the festival is a little more involved than packing socks and a toothbrush. His task at hand was planing wooden paddles.
“Planes are kind of interesting because they’ll chirp,” he said, as he ran a hand-planer tool down the length of the paddle, laughing at its dullness. “But when they’re really sharp, and you run down a piece of wood it goes ‘chirp’ like a bird, which this one is not doing.”
Hamar is part of a group who will set out for a 10-day, 250 mile journey from Kasaan to Juneau, where Celebration is held, in canoes they carved themselves.
According to Hamar, paddles aren’t his favorite thing to work on.
“I like three dimensional stuff a lot more,” Hamar said.
There’s also a large totem pole sitting on saw horses in the corner. He’s been working on that for about a year. It has three watchmen on the top and below that, the beak of a raven juts out.
“[It’s] more exciting for me as an artist,” Hamar said of the totem. “But you know, there’s something beautiful about the simplistic nature of something like a paddle as well.”
Across the room, there is a stack of rough pieces of wood carved into a paddle shape, waiting to be sanded.
“It’s pretty exciting to be going on this journey for the first time in our own canoes from our own community and meeting up with a lot of other communities on the way,” Hamar said as he worked. “I think, hopefully, it’ll bring a lot of inspiration to the people and hopefully get some folks excited about maintaining the traditions.”
Twenty-six rowers plan to depart Kasaan in three canoes. The group is all ages.
“Well, the youngest has to be six months, because that’s my baby,” Hamar laughed.
The carver’s whole family will be joining him on the voyage — his mom and dad, sister and brother-in-law, and his wife and two daughters. One of the girls is six months old and the other is almost six years old.
To get to the village of Kasaan, you turn off the main route that spans Prince of Wales Island and then follow a dirt and gravel logging road for nearly an hour through dense forest and timber operations and then, suddenly, there it is.
To bolster the group, some paddlers will be coming to join them from other communities all over Southeast Alaska, and according to Hamar, a couple as far away as Seattle.
They plan to make stops in Thorne Bay, Coffman Cove, Wrangell, Petersburg and then camp the rest of the way up the coast to Juneau.
There is an 18-foot canoe hanging in the shop. Hamar said that wasn’t one of the ones headed to Celebration. It wasn’t ready yet. The wood of the canoe fanned out but then curled back in on itself like a flower that hasn’t bloomed. Hamar said it needed to be steamed.
“Basically, you just take it down to the beach and you start a big fire and you put a bunch of rocks in the fire. And then you fill [the canoe] up with saltwater. And then you put the hot rocks in there until it starts boiling and cover it with a tarp. And then it just kind of naturally falls open as the wood heats up,” Hamar explained.
Once it’s steamed, the carvers will prop the hull open with sticks so it holds its shape as the wood cools. Eventually, the seats and crossbars — called thwarts — are what will keep the wooden canoe in shape.
Finally, strips of wood are steamed in and riveted to the sides to act as ribs.
“That’s kind of the last step before finishing it with oil and paint or whatever you’re doing,” Hamar said.
Since the canoes are one large piece of wood, they’re prone to becoming overly dried out and splitting. Hamar paints the bottoms with tar to lock in the moisture.
Hamar said making a canoe is a long and difficult process. In his 20 years carving with his dad, he had built just the three hanging in the shed. He said that’s because it’s hard to find the perfect piece of wood. Plus, they aren’t something you can easily sell.
“So then the person who might be using it isn’t actually going to be able to afford it, unless it’s being sold as an art piece, which kind of isn’t the point, right?” Hamar explained, adding that the canoes require a lot of maintenance. But back in the day, people depended on them to get around.
“You [probably] would have had the time to take care of it. It was important,” Hamara said. “It’s now important in a different way, I think. It’s important for the culture and ceremonial use more than anything.”
That’s not to say that the vessels are strictly ceremonial though.
“This one is covered in pine tar, and seal oil, and blood and guts, and it’s pretty beat up and that’s why I like it,” Hamar said, pointing to a canoe he and a friend had used the previous weekend to catch a 250-pound seal. “It looks good that way! Looks like it gets used, because it does.”
Hamar’s work was interrupted by a group of students from Klawock filing into the shed. They were there to learn about sustainable harvesting and the important sacrifices that trees and animals make to provide for them.
“When we’re talking about something like a totem pole, we have to make sure that we’re not only looking after the ones that we cut down and doing a good job to make sure that — that’s why we make them look really pretty,” Hamar told the kids, gesturing at the totem pole next to him. “And you don’t want to kill something and have it just go to waste.”
Hamar isn’t just a carver. He said he loves the carving shed and his work teaching people the traditional ways. But he said that culture and artists should evolve, as well. In his free time, he is working on an art piece commissioned by the Anchorage Museum.
Celebration kicks off June 5 and Hamar had a stack of paddles to finish before his group heads out in late May. They are scheduled to launch on Saturday, May 25.

March 16, 2025 | Events: International, National Team: Long Track
NORWAY – Canada’s long track speed skaters added a silver and bronze to double the team’s medal count at the 2025 ISU World Speed Skating Championships on Sunday in Hamar
Ivanie Blondin jumped onto the podium for the third time this weekend at the premier event on the speed skating calendar in a non-Olympic year
snagging silver in the women’s mass start event
Connor Howe finally mixed together a perfect 1500m race when it counted most to secure the bronze medal
finished in the silver-medal position for the second-straight weekend after mixing it up with the best 24-women in the action-packed mass start race
bouncing positions in the top half of the pack for the 16-lap test where she methodically edged her way towards the front of the group for the back half of the race
The feisty Canuck took the bell lap in fourth spot where she quickly bolted into second position in the sprint finish
I didn’t really have the legs for the final sprint
At one point I was a bit further back with two laps left because there was some bumping happening which is usual
I am still happy with the outcome and how I was feeling all week
I just didn’t feel like I was tip top today.”
Marijke Groenewoud of the Netherlands bettered Blondin for the second-straight week
claiming the World Championship title with a winning time of 8:23.17
Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida was third at 8:23.58
“It makes it a lot easier losing to Marijke because she is such a sweetheart
We did a little bike ride together last week and had coffee
but I think it maybe was not the best preparation for Worlds for myself
I may have done too much altitude too close
We are always learning our bodies and that is part of the sport.”
It was the fourth mass start medal of the season for the 34-year-old Blondin
She battled to a bronze two weeks ago and a silver earlier this year at a World Cup stop in Nagano
Japan before her second-place finish last weekend in The Netherlands
Howe celebrated a bronze-medal breakthrough at the World Championships in the men’s 1500m race
It was the first World Championship medal of his six-year career on the senior National Team
The 24-year-old exercised his race plan to near perfection – strong starts
Competing in the outside lane in the eighth of 12 heats
Howe clocked a solid time of 1:44.78 in his four laps around the Hamar Olympic Hall
He was on a fifth-place pace until the final lap where he kicked into high gear
Howe was then left to wait and see if the rest of the world could catch him
It’s been a few years that I felt like I had the potential
but it never would come together at the right moment so I’m happy it finally came together
All week I have been focusing on my start because it has been a bit off
I was able to save the energy and keep the speed in that last lap
It’s always a bit stressful sitting there watching
I thought it (the time) would hold up decently
It was close between the top three so it could have gone either way.”
Howe was dropped into second place by Norwegian Peder Kongshaug
who was crowned World Champion after posting a golden time of 1:44.64
bumped the Canuck into the bronze-medal position in the final heat
It was a dream race for Canada’s Howe who had five
top-10 World Cup finishes in 1,500-metre action this year
His best result in the middle-distance race came last weekend when he was sixth in Heerenveen
but I knew my skating has been slowly getting better this year
I had a slow start (to the year) which was a bit frustrating because I knew I had it in me
so I’m happy that I finished on a high like this.”
The bronze-medal triumph capped off a solid World Championship performance for the Canadian squad who celebrated four medals
The Canadian women’s trio of Brooklyn McDougall
Béatrice Lamarche and Ivanie Blondin blazed a trail to the podium for the Canucks with a silver medal in the Team Sprint race on Thursday
Blondin then joined forces with Isabelle Weidemann and Valérie Maltais to claim a bronze in the women’s Team Pursuit on Friday
Team Canada also had a couple of near podium misses
Laurent Dubreuil was fourth in the men’s 500-metre test
while Weidemann was edged off the podium in the women’s 5,000-metre event

Vikingskipet (the Viking Ship Olympic Arena) in Hamar
Norway is set to welcome the world’s top university speed skaters as the Hamar 2024 FISU World University Championship Speed Skating is ready to go from 22-25 February
This will be the third time Norway is hosting a FISU Championship
with Trondheim having hosted orienteering in 1988 and 1998
but the first time it’s hosting speed skating
Hamar is a town of approximately 30,000 residents and is no stranger to welcoming major events to its oval
the venue’s earned due to its resemblance to a Viking vessel
has hosted multiple World Cup events and was the venue for the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games
where Norwegian Johan Olav Koss dominated with three gold medals and three world records
1994 was also only the second time Olympic speed skating had been held indoors to that point
Now the top university athletes from around the world are on their way to Hamar to compete in the 7th edition of the FISU Championship Speed Skating
This on the heels of the last two FISU speed skating events having been held in Lake Placid
USA with the FISU Games of January 2023 and the 2022 FISU Championship Speed Skating
At both events the Japanese came away on top of the medal standings with 14 earned one year ago
The opening ceremony takes place the evening of 21 February and competition in eight disciplines will follow over the four days of the event
Athletes from 13 countries and four continents are expected to participate
Competition for those athletes opens Thursday 22 February with the women’s 1000m at 14:00 local time in Hamar
and is followed that day by the men’s 1000m

Authorities in Sudan’s North and West Kordofan States have announced a month-long state of emergency after clashes between the Kababish and Hamar tribes.
Last week, at least 55 people were killed during fighting between Kababish and Hamar tribesmen and 28 others sustained injuries from both sides.
In a joint press conference on Sunday, the two governors of North and West Kordofan States Ahmed Harun and Abulgasim al Amin Baraka in Al Obeid town expressed their concern about the current security situation.
The two state officials confirmed their commitment to restore peace and stability in the area.
Governor Haroun of North Kordofan said that after thorough investigations into the clashes, they found no evidence of a planned attack by either of the two communities.
For his part, the Governor of West Kordofan State, Abdulgasim al Amin Baraka, said after an intervention by traditional leaders and security agents, the situation is now calm.
Governor Baraka revealed that a peace conference will be organized between the two communities to restore peace as soon as possible.

with self-defense militias arming themselves to protect against the advancing RSF
the SAF transitioned from a tactical defensive mode into an offensive one
regaining territories from the RSF and establishing checkpoints to consolidate its gains around its bases in Khartoum
the SAF now appears on the verge of breaking the RSF siege on the Engineers Corps in Omdurman
where the SAF has been on the defensive since April 2023
Other gains were made in North Bahri in Khartoum
while mediation attempts by the West Kordofan native administration failed to prevent clashes between the RSF and members of the SAF 22nd Infantry Division in Babanusa
a faction of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu turned to the SAF to repel an RSF attack on Dilling
attracted widespread criticism against the SAF
including claims that SAF commanders were colluding with the RSF
prompted the formation of self-defense militias and enabled a tactical shift in the SAF from defense to offense
Khartoum’s metropolitan area has been the epicenter of fighting between the SAF and the RSF
with the former strategically adopting a defensive stance and concentrating its efforts on maintaining control of its military bases
the SAF initiated a coordinated offensive against the RSF on various fronts in Khartoum’s tri-cities
reclaiming control over several territories (see map below)
The RSF’s focus on maintaining control in Darfur, al-Jazirah, and other active frontlines, and the isolation of its forces in Old Omdurman
created an opportunity for the SAF to begin its offensive
The first target was the SAF-controlled Engineers Corps military base in south Omdurman
targeting the SAF troops with artillery and sniper fire
The siege limited the movements of the SAF troops
with the RSF using the surrounding civilian neighborhoods (such as al-Arda and al-Abbasiya) as hideouts
Direct confrontations between the SAF and the RSF were thus limited to frequent exchanges of fire between the two sides
SAF forces in the Engineers Corps began to attack the RSF in Omdurman
breaking the siege and forcing the RSF into a retreat
RSF snipers stationed in the high-rise buildings of al-Arda neighborhood slowed down the attack
preventing the SAF from establishing a direct connection between its troops in north and south Omdurman
Although the RSF command deployed reinforcements in Omdurman
its troops struggled to maintain control over north and south Old Omdurman
Intense artillery fire and drone strikes by the SAF further limited the movements of the RSF
the RSF still maintains control over key positions in Omdurman
including al-Arda Street and the Radio and Television Commission building
The goal of the SAF offensive is to link its forces in Omdurman
eventually forcing the RSF out of the city
still circumvent the SAF Engineers Corps and impede further SAF advances
thus retaining control over parts of Omdurman
the Engineers Corps is numerically and militarily less equipped than other SAF forces in north Omdurman
where the SAF has established its operational command center in Karrari
the SAF also mounted an offensive against the RSF in Bahri
SAF troops from the Weapons and Ammunition Corps stationed in north Bahri and SAF troops in the Reconnaissance Corps in northeast Bahri launched coordinated raids against the RSF north of the city
Supported by artillery and shelling from the SAF in Karrari
the SAF expanded its control around these bases and in the surrounding neighborhoods
besieged members of the SAF in the Signal Corps in south Bahri also claimed to have pushed the RSF back
The SAF’s objective behind these maneuvers might be to cut off RSF forces in the central area of Bahri from their supply route in Sharg al-Nile and besiege them from three fronts — north
The RSF forces in the central Bahri area may become isolated as the Shambat bridge
which served as their access point to Omdurman
the SAF might have an opportunity to break the siege on the Signal Corps and
the General Command HQ in the northern part of Khartoum city
The SAF advances in Omdurman mark a potential turning point in the conflict
with the possibility of regaining control over Khartoum’s metropolitan area
If the SAF forces can successfully link up in Omdurman
they may be able to support their counterparts in Bahri
leveraging advances in north Bahri to potentially secure control over both sides of the al-Halfaya bridge
If the SAF is able to link their forces in north and south Bahri
this move would effectively break the siege on the General Command headquarters
factional and ethnic divisions also intersect with the national war
Shifting alliances emerged in the city of Dilling
where the al-Hilu faction of the SPLM-N militarily supports the SAF
Communities in South Kordofan have splintered during the conflict
with the Arab tribes — particularly the Hawazmah — aligning with the RSF
The Nuba ethnic group has also split along factional lines
between clans supporting SAF and those siding with Abdelaziz al-Hilu
the long-time leader of a faction of the SPLM-N
The al-Hilu faction has controlled some parts of South Kordofan since 2012
with the SAF and SPLM-N-al-Hilu pounding RSF positions and in Dilling
These developments highlight the multiple intersecting layers of the war in Sudan
ethnic divisions intersect with the national war between the SAF and the RSF
igniting or escalating existing inter-ethnic tensions
the RSF’s insistence on overtaking Babanusa may prompt the fragmentation of the Misseriya tribe
whose members maintain ties with both the SAF and the RSF
For its part, the SPLM-N’s al-Hilu faction’s support for the SAF in Dilling mirrors a decision made by the Abdul Wahid al-Nur faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) to deploy forces in North Darfur when it faced the RSF in November (for more, see the December 2023 Sudan Situation Update)
The mobilization of rebel groups and ethnic militias in North Darfur forced the RSF to avoid a direct confrontation
a sustained collaboration between the SAF and al-Hilu may push the RSF out of Dilling and other areas where the al-Hilu faction of the SPLM-N holds sway
clashes between these collaborators elsewhere in South Kordofan add to the uncertainty of the situation
