Although Norwegians live a largely western lifestyle
the day-to-day rhythms of life here are inevitably ruled by the climate
warmth and light are surprisingly easy to come by too
particularly in this region–you’ll just have to wait until spring
the colder months are the perfect time to embrace the coziness of a sauna or the drama of a ski hill
you have gorgeous waters to swim in and expansive terrain to hike
The port cities and villages that dot this rugged coastline offer a rich sampling of the very best of Norwegian culture
Take a guided tour for an introduction to its rich roots as you set foot in its stave churches
and charming eateries serving up local fishers’ freshest catches
you’ll discover why Norway is often judged as one of the world’s greatest places to not just visit
See: Flåmsbana
If you make just one jaunt while in the region
which begins at sea level and climbs over 2,800 feet through beautifully rugged terrain to Myrdal mountain station
and ranks among the world’s most stunning train routes
Touch: The silky white sands of Åkrafjorden
one of the most beautiful beaches in Norway
Smell: The dewy pines and mineral waters that characterize the region’s iconic fjords like the Aurlandsfjord
make time for the hiking routes—most of them accessible by car or by old railways offering plenty of stops along the way
The sometimes controversial sub-genre originated in Norway and was inspired by the nation’s wilderness and extreme natural elements
Listen as you walk around Stavanger or try and catch a show at cozy live music pub Piren
Taste: Fresh berries and smoked fish—all beloved local delicacies—at Flåm’s rambunctious Aegir Microbrewery
Taste Norway’s rich and fortifying history and culture like a true Sami
The city’s many museums explore local art and artisanal craftsmanship
and the agricultural and anthropological history of this busy destination
you’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled for Norway’s obelisk national monument
which was built in 1872 to commemorate a century of unification
Haraldshaugen is said to be the burial place of Harald Fairhair

Åkrasanden | Anetlanda/iStock/Getty ImagesAfternoon: Explore the candy-colored facades of the fjordic waterfront, then wander down picturesque Haraldsgata, teeming with cafes and boutiques. An early afternoon aperitif at one of Haugesund’s oldest pubs, Mackkjelleren
is a great spot to get chatting with locals and sample this spot’s signature brews
Evening: Dine at the dainty, low-key but romantic Dattera Til Lothe
Book a table and enjoy their earth fish soups and stews
all in a gently lit setting filled with carved woods and fresh flowers

bringing together its historic and contemporary vibes with a perfectly Norwegian finesse
but its university town status means it is still bursting with plenty of youthful energy
One of Norway’s most-talked-about fjords (Lysefjord) is 75 minutes away from town
but if you’d rather not make the schlep to the mountains
Stavanger is still home to plenty of shopping and eating options to keep you entertained in its downtown area
Gamle Stavanger | Photo courtesy of FotoKnoff / Sven-Erik Knoff - Visit Region Stavanger
mauinow1/iStock/Getty ImagesMorning: The Gamle Stavanger historic city center and its cobblestone streets will have you seriously considering relocating here
Its 170 white wooden houses predate World War II and are lined with sunflowers and foxgloves and copious Norwegian flags
Noon: Exploring Lysefjord from Stavanger is also easily done on a tight timeline
You may leave late in the morning and be back for an early dinner
The ferry goes directly from downtown and the four-hour round trip is worth the drop-dead beautiful scenery
you’ll likely spot seals basking on rocks and you’ll also float right past the infamous Vagabond’s Cave and creep close to the intense Hengjanefossen waterfall
Lysefjord loop | Photo courtesy of Fjord Norway/fjordnorway.com/Visit NorwayLate afternoon: Grab a table at Gådjå Etiopisk
a perfectly local and lowkey eatery that is a Stavanger favorite
Sharing platters of spongy buckwheat injera bread and all the bean stews and sauces it can mop up is comforting after a long day spent exploring
Evening: If you find yourself in town after dark, you’ll realize that Stavanger isn’t necessarily the place for a wild night out. Check the listings, though, for venues like Piren or Backstage and you might be able to catch some live music

Flåm is a village that calls to mind some of the most remote elements of both beloved destinations
This is evident in Flåm’s lush emerald hills and fields
and winding bends with striking views around every corner
this tiny ancient spot is hugged by mountains over 4,500 feet high
The surrounding UNESCO World Heritage site
is one of the nation’s most cherished destinations and measures over 10 miles long
Home to less than 500 Norwegians who live in the village year-round, Flåm welcomes many thousands of visitors each year who come to see its museum and adorable cafes and restaurants. But the main attraction is without doubt the iconic Flåmsbana railway
which allows you to hurtle through the landscape in a vintage train compartment

If you feel like you’re living in a movie while in Flåm
it’s probably because its scenery is said to have inspired the Disney blockbuster
The Flåmsbana from Flåm to Myrdal passes through 20 tunnels and stops many times for photo ops along the way
making it the ideal way to experience everything the village and its surroundings have to offer
Noon: Marvel in the heights of this majestic railway and enjoy the view from the top. Indulge in a warm waffle or pancake the charming Cafe Rallaren
and wind your way back down while enjoying a new view of everything you saw on the way up
Fish market | Sergey-73/ShutterstockAfternoon: Take in the sights and smells of Flåm’s catch of the day
before settling in at the local legend that is the Green Norway Flåm street food stall in the main village square
You might get different jewels of the ocean depending on the day and season
but it will be comforting and served in a bustling environment that feels truly characteristic of this friendly
Take a seat at a picnic table to slurp down on your fish chowder as you watch the village life go by
Evening: Aegir Microbrewery
is a family affair founded by an American Norwegian husband-and-wife team
It’s a cozy Viking pub where you can do tastings and tours before feasting on hearty dishes that trace their roots back over a century
Aegir’s blends of hops with fresh mountain water must be sampled
as should their newer range of fruity hard seltzers
Aegir Microbrewery | Photo courtesy of Aegir Microbrewery _____________________________________________________________________ What to know before you goThe currencyThe currency is Norwegian kroner (crowns)
But credit cards are widely accepted and cash is rarely needed
Try and bring slim adaptors for any older plugs
When to visit Norway really depends on whether you’re a fire-and-ice sort of person
Winters bring the aurora and more winter sports
along with the need to pack plenty of layers
Visiting during the summer months allows you to experience a wider range of activities
and don’t expect anything to come cheap in Norway
Meals are generally quite hearty and generous
Aquavit is literally the lifeblood of any seafaring fjordperson
so make like a local and down it at least once during your visit
"Competence and experience are the main keys to success with such an innovation project. When there were changes in the project that made it possible for us to bring in more players, we chose the three who we believe have the most expertise and experience in this area in Norway," said project manager Veronica Charlotte Haugan
Last year, Haugesund's city council entered into a funding arrangement with a different group of companies to start a ferry service with a battery-electric
The small ferry would have capacity for 50 passengers
and would run on a short harbor route connecting the city center to nearby islands.
At first, a new Oslo-based autonomous systems startup was selected as vessel builder and operator. However, this firm's first ferry encountered technical difficulties soon after it entered service in Fredrikstad
according to local news outlet Fredrikstad-Blad.
Haugesund city council has now selected a different ferry technology provider
the company that built the world's first autonomous ferry for the city of Stockholm
"The new partners in the project are internationally recognized players who have previously carried out ground-breaking innovation projects in the field," said Ole Bernt Thorbjørnsen
"We are now working towards the goal of having the boat in test operation in autumn 2025
This timeframe gives us the opportunity to deliver a full-fledged
safe and reliable service together with our existing and new partners."
The city's leaders are looking forward to beginning operations with the new vessel
It will be the first autonomous ferry in the world to connect more than two points in a route
and it will restart a long-missing public connection to the island of Vibrandsoy
just 500 feet from the city's main ferry dock
"The city boat project will help make Vibrandsoy accessible to everyone
strengthen the city's maritime identity
environmentally friendly access to a fantastic recreation area," said Annette Saether
head of business for Haugesund municipality.
Norway’s Haugesund municipality has signed a letter of intent with compatriot ferry operator Torghatten
and autonomy software firm Zeabuz for the research and development project ‘Emission-free autonomous city boat’
the project aims to develop a zero-emission
autonomous vessel for the city of Haugesund
The vessel will service Haugesund City Centre
The partners plan to initiate the route and test the technology starting in the autumn of 2025
the goal is to expand the route to also cover other locations such as Karmøy
“We have a maritime history and a great coast with islands close to the city that have not been accessible to the public for many years
The city boat project will help make Vibrandsøy accessible to everyone
strengthen the city’s maritime identity
environmentally friendly access to a fantastic recreation area
it will promote business development and tourism in the region,” Annette Sæther
Head of Business in Haugesund municipality
“We are now working towards the goal of having the boat in operation (for testing) during the autumn of 2025
safe and reliable service together with our existing and new partners,” Ole Bernt Thorbjørnsen
Municipal Director in Haugesund municipality
The new partners will join the project group which consists of Haugesund Municipality
The partnership will ensure that the new city boat operates safely
efficiently and environmentally friendly with future-oriented and scalable technology
Mayor Nils Konrad Bua believes that the project will have positive ripple effects for Haugesund:
“The boat will be the first of its kind
There is no equivalent pilot like this in Norway today
so this is an important milestone for the development of Norwegian technology
The innovation will certainly help put Haugesund municipality and the region on the map when it comes to the development of maritime technology.”

Haugesund municipality has signed a letter of intent with Torghatten, SEAM, and Zeabuz for the research and development project "Emission-free autonomous city boat"
The aim is to initate the route and test the technology starting from the autumn of 2025
project manager of "Emission-free autonomous city boat"
announces that new forces have been obtained to carry out the project
"Competence and experience are the main keys to success when dealing with an innovation project like this
When there were changes in the project that made it possible for us to bring in more players
we chose the three who we believe have the most expertise and experience in this area in Norway
I believe we now have a solid and strong collaboration group that has all the prerequisites to succeed in developing an autonomous city boat in Haugesund," says Haugan
The city boat project is a Research and Development project (R&D project) with the aim of developing a national pilot for an emission-free autonomous city boat in Haugesund
the route will run between Haugesund Center (Indre kai)
the aim is to dimension the route to also cover other locations such as Karmøy
Torghatten is Norway's largest ferry company with extensive experience from operating ferry and fast boat services across the country
while Zeabuz is the supplier of the advanced autonomy technology that will be found on board the new boat
Together they are behind the world's first commercial autonomous city ferry
SEAM is a supplier and integrator of world-leading maritime technology and systems
They have experience from a number of innovation projects such as the LH2 ferry Hydra
the battery swap robot SHIFTR and the hydrogen ferries in the Vestfjorden
"We have a maritime history and a great coast with islands close to the city that have not been accessible to the public for many years
The city boat project will help make Vibrandsøy accessible to everyone
it will promote business development and tourism in the region," says Annette Sæther
head of business in Haugesund municipality
The new partners will join the ranks of an already solid project group
Høgskulen på Vestlandet (HVL) and Norce
"The boat will be the first of its kind
The innovation will certainly help put Haugesund municipality and the region on the map when it comes to the development of maritime technology," says Bua
"This gives us a unique opportunity to link the city islands together and not least to make the city's pearl Vibrandsøy accessible to everyone."
"We strongly believe that the offer will be a valuable addition to the cityscape
The city boat should be available for everyone
and we are very much looking forward to being able to offer this new transport solution to our citizens," concludes Veronica Haugan

“I wanted this year's event to reflect both traditional strengths and emerging trends in the region's film industry”
by Jan Lumholdt
27/08/2024 - The programme director looks back at a rewarding experience as the 2024 edition of New Nordic Films in Haugesund marked the 30th anniversary of the film market
At the 52nd Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, the 2024 edition of New Nordic Films marked the 30th anniversary of the film market as well as the 19th edition of the Nordic Co-Production Market
Acting programme director Line Halvorsen looks back at a rewarding experience
Cineuropa: After “mission complete”, what’s your status report on this year’s edition of New Nordic Films?Line Halvorsen: First and foremost, it was an incredibly rewarding event and a really great festival, all in all. I was covering for Gyda Velvin Myklebust as head of New Nordic Films this year [see last year’s interview]
I am really happy with how everything went
Are there any programme items of note that you wish to point out?I wanted this year's event to reflect both traditional strengths and emerging trends in the region's film industry
It was the last year in our two-year focus on Nordic-UK co-productions
showcasing an increasing trend towards international collaboration in a post-Brexit landscape
Another key focus at the festival was an emphasis on new technologies and formats
we expanded our focus to include talks on AI and VR
hopefully inspiring participating filmmakers to stay ahead of the curve
we plan to also include presentations of innovative projects for new platforms
We also continued our commitment to nurturing emerging talent through the Next Nordic Generation programme
spotlighting films from top Nordic film schools
and the students were all invited to Haugesund to take part in the industry programme
they were encouraged to discover how a film market works
and they were presented with new networking opportunities
We also invited a delegation of six producers from the Danish Film School to attend the market programme
we notice a strong presence of female directors and a particularly strong presence of dedicated female producers in the Nordic countries
Over 50 sales agents and distributors were present among the 280 accredited participants from 28 different countries this year
We organised over 230 one-to-one meetings between project holders and participants
Dag Johan Haugerud continues to explore intricate human relationships with a blend of subtle humour and poignant drama
He has such a great talent for delving into the nuances of everyday life with wit and intellect
focusing on ordinary characters facing extraordinary moral dilemmas
I expect the film to resonate with audiences and critics alike
Given Haugerud's meticulous approach to storytelling
Love is poised to be a standout Venice entry this year
Let’s look forward to next year and the 53rd edition of New Nordic Films
Are there already some thoughts in the back of your mind for the future? This year’s event is over
but it marks only the start of many new and hopefully long-lasting relationships
We are looking forward to welcoming several of the films and projects back next year
flourish and turn into great stories for festival and cinema lovers all over the world

Aibel and Aker BP celebrated that the Munin utility module is ready for sail-away from Thailand
The first steel was cut in November last year
Now it is just weeks before the 2900 tonnes module will set sail from Aibel’s yard in Laem Chabang towards Haugesund.
“I am extremely proud of the Munin team and their deliveries
We started construction a year ago in Thailand
after many years of planning and engineering
the utility module will sail from Laem Chabang
as a key building block in the overall Haugesund assembly programme
This is a very important milestone for us – delivered as planned
A big thank you to everyone involved,” says Munin Project manager Håkon Helgå in Aker BP.
Representatives from executive management in both companies joined the Munin team for the celebration at yard 2 on Thursday morning
The Norwegian Embassy in Thailand and Norwegian Church Abroad were present at the ceremony
The Munin topside will weigh approximately 8000 tonnes
with a size of 62 by 42 metres and a height of 35 metres
The contract is valued at NOK 7 billion for Aibel and will provide work for around 2000 people in Asker
“This is the first greenfield project Aibel is delivering together with Aker BP
We have been collaboration closely for two years and have managed to establish an integrated one team working to deliver a unique topside for the Norwegian shelf,” says Munin Project director Erling Landsværk in Aibel.
Aker BP and licence partners Equinor and Orlen Upstream Norway
is setting a new standard with remote-controlled operations
new technology and a data-driven organisation
which is situated in the northern part of the area
This installation is the first of its kind on the Norwegian shelf
“Munin is being built without a helicopter deck
Access to the platform will be carried out in campaigns through support vessels
Our priorities have been safety incorporated in the design
minimal maintenance requirements and streamlining of platform systems and functions to avoid manual operations,” explains Landsværk
The Munin utility module is over 32 metres long
Approximately 950 people have been working to complete the module in Thailand
Aibel Thailand is delivering the utility module
flare boom and deck sections for the Munin process module through multiple shipments to Norway
Assembly and outfitting will take place at Aibel’s yard in Haugesund.
“We started assembly of the Munin topside in the North Sea Hall in Haugesund in September
The first shipment with two process sections from Thailand arrived shortly after
We are progressing according to plan and the work has been carried out safely
Now we are really looking forward to receiving the next shipment from Thailand in Haugesund
we will also receive almost 500 tonnes of structural sections for the process module in this shipment,” says Landsværk.
In the next year the Munin topside will rise and fill North Sea Hall to the roof.
“I witnessed Thai monks bless the steel when we did the first cut in Thailand
It is great to be present here today and see what the Munin team has achieved this last year
The delivery of the utility module is important for the integrated Yggdrasil plan
We are progressing fast forward in all delivery lines
Thousands of people in Norway and worldwide are involved
Then it is fantastic to be on site and celebrate together with some of the people behind this major development,” concludes Project director for Fixed Facilities deliveries in Yggdrasil
Assembly of the Munin topside at Aibel’s yard in Haugesund
Two sections have been installed on the grillage so far
the third section will be lifted these days

HAUGESUND, Norway — Aibel is working on three North Sea platforms at its yard in Haugesund on Norway’s west coast
The 80-m tall, 23,000-metric ton, 900-MW capacity DolWin epsilon platform will convert alternating current from three wind farms in the DolWin cluster in the German North Sea to high-voltage direct current
The power will then be exported to mainland Germany
Aibel also supplied the DolWin beta offshore wind platform
which has been operating in this sector since 2015
and Aibel/Seatrium have worked jointly on the new platform with Hitachi Energy
Finally, the 1,200-MW Dogger Bank B platform is 40 m tall and weighs 7,000 mt. It is the second of three offshore wind platforms Aibel is supplying to Equinor, SSE Renewables and Vårgrønn for the Dogger Bank development in the UK southern North Sea
which will eventually have a capacity of up to 3.6 GW
Aside from these three structures, the construction hall at Haugesund has modules that will provide the Equinor-operated Oseberg Field in the North Sea with power from shore
A new compressor module is also under construction to increase Oseberg’s gas exports
In the shipbuilding hall, a new module is under construction for installation on the Aasta Hansteen spar platform in the Norwegian Sea to receive production from the deepwater Irpa tieback
“We are working on a large number of projects at the same time
and there is a total weight of 70,000 mt at the yard,” said Lars Inge Hellestveit
Aker BP’s unmanned production platform Munin
will provide more of the activity at the yard
is one of three new platforms ordered for the Yggdrasil project in the North Sea
The Dogger Bank C converter platform will arrive in Haugesund in early summer
after the Dogger Bank B facility has left the yard
Once Dogger Bank C departs the yard, the two wind converter platforms Aibel is building for Ørsted for the Hornsea 3 project in the UK North Sea will move in for final completion and outfitting of Hitachi Energy’s HVDC technology.
Both are under construction at present in the company’s yard in Thailand.
Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson lead us on a heartfelt road trip after Filip’s father hits retirement age
Since its national premiere this March, Sweden’s The Last Journey [+see also: trailerfilm profile] has become the top-grossing domestic documentary ever
in a country where the genre has quite a proud and prestigious tradition
This sensational success may partly stem from the popularity of directors Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson
creating and hosting humorous shows of the barmy and boisterous sort
Paradoxically, a reflective and insightful sensitivity is occasionally surprisingly evident within the duo. In this work, debuting internationally in the Nordic Focus section of the 52nd Norwegian International Film Festival at Haugesund
this dearly beloved French teacher has enlightened and enriched generations of students
bringing Gallic culture into the classroom
playing and ratatouille (“the best in Europe”)
at times sporting a beret and a tricolore-coloured shirt
“The French call it le troisième âge – the third age,” he muses at his goodbye party
“I hope it starts the second I walk out the door.”
They buy a used Renault 4 and set off with Dad kindly yet resolutely put in the front passenger seat
with its fair share of qualms and mishaps along the way
it emerges as a complete piece of work – as both a film and a mission
Memorable moments include Lars being literally pushed across the French border
Lars visiting the grave of George Brassens
“Les copains d'abord” and having a relaxed talk about death (“It doesn’t scare me; I’m preparing for it”) and Lars enjoying a heated row in traffic (“French freedom!”)
just like all those generations of students
has been falling head over heels for the indestructible charm and big heart of Lars Hammar
he may well be heading for Swedish cinema history
his relatively few teacher colleagues on the scene have been decidedly disagreeable: Caligula
the Latin teacher in the Bergman-scripted Frenzy
and the hapless Sören in Jan Troell’s Berlin-winning Who Saw Him Die
The Last Journey is a Swedish production staged by Nexiko AB, in co-production with Nordisk Film and RMV Film and SVT
The region suffered declines in admissions, but local films thrived, with Denmark remaining the most stable market and Finland experiencing the steepest drop
