Kongsvinger celebrate their semifinal victory against Stromsgodset. Kongsvinger FCIn one week's time
second-tier Kongsvinger will experience the proudest moment in their 124-year history when they face Rosenborg at the famous Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo in their first Norwegian Cup final
The modest First Division club met Juventus in the UEFA Cup back in 1993
The cup has always been an extremely popular and important competition in Norway and Kongsvinger reaching the final was unthinkable three years ago
when the club was in desperate financial and professional crisis
two unorthodox decisions changed everything
Espen Nystuen was offered the jobs of chief executive and sporting director -- an unprecedented move given that the 31-year-old was still a player for Lillestrom at the time
Nystuen had spent his early years at the club as a midfielder before moving on to bigger things in 2005
10 shirt again (even though he is a centre-back now) was a bold one
and we are all familiar with each other," Nystuen tells ESPN FC
knew that I have academic degrees in sports science and economy and thought that I was the right man for the job
I could have continued playing in the first division
and that was a good opportunity to ensure a career after my playing days
I chose to return home and help my club that was in a very difficult financial situation in the second tier."
And so while still playing 90 minutes in every game
we have to think differently to find our way," he says
"We prioritised economy and decided to use youngsters to turn things around
Developing local talents instead of buying players elsewhere became a priority
Kongsvinger coach Luis Pimenta speaks seven languages. KongsvingerNaturally
the changes did not take effect in a positive way immediately
Kongsvinger were relegated to the second division (the third tier) in 2013
a second unusual decision was taken when the club brought in unknown 34-year-old coach Luis Berkemeier Pimenta in September 2014
who speaks seven languages and moved to Luxembourg at the age of 5
followed a long line of Portuguese managers who have never played professional football themselves
"I understood quite early that I don't have a talent to be a footballer
and my dream has always been to become a coach"
Thus he studied high performance coaching in Lisbon and sports psychology at John Moores University
where he helped with analysis at Liverpool's youth academy
Pimenta met two young Norwegian coaches -- Leif Gunnar Smerud and Haakon Lunov -- and when they joined Honefoss (who had been promoted to the Tippeligaen in 2011)
they wanted the Portuguese to join their staff
who had worked as an assistant at Belenenses' under-17 side and contributed to Queiroz's academy
he would be in a managerial job of his own
Kongsvinger came calling as Nystuen was able to pick his own boss
We were looking for a young and ambitious coach for our young players," Nystuen says
we liked the way he thinks about football."
and in the office he is my boss," Pimenta said with a smile
"It was good for me to come towards the end of the 2014 season when we had no chances of promotion
and we laid the foundations for the next season together."
Espen Nystuen plays for Kongsvinger and is also the club's chief executive and sporting director. Kongsvinger FCThose foundations were well built. Kongsvinger became unstoppable in 2015, winning their group in the third-tier by 20 points and enjoying a perfect home record. And, this season, the club's meteoric rise has continued as Kongsvinger outscored all the teams in the second division
They finished fifth after losing just twice since early July
qualified for the promotion playoffs and have a decent chance of going up again
they did so with adventurous football that brought a lot of support from neutrals
"One of our goals was to build an identity
We want to be able to implement different styles
It is important to entertain the fans who come to watch us," Pimenta says
most of the people in the stands were of older generation -- those who remember the good days in the 1980s and '90s [when they would be fighting for the Norwegian Premier League title]
Now we are creating a new generation of supporters who like this team."
The backroom staff are working well together
Pimenta and Nystuen seem in perfect harmony
and the fact that both were born in 1981 allows them to be closer to the players
while assistant coach Goncalo Pereira is just 27
"There is a short distance between directors
and that helps to create friendship within the squad
We work in a very good environment," Nystuen insists
He is an attack-minded coach who wants to dominate every game."
Kongsvinger may have been expecting a good league run
but their sensational cup form came as a huge bonus
They met lower division sides at earlier stages
but were drawn away against Stromsgodet in the semifinals
which was supposed to be the end of the road
"Stromsgodset won all seven home semifinal fixtures in their history
while Kongsvinger lost all four semifinals in their history -- the last of them 20 years ago," Pimenta says
and the young coach was in tears after the final whistle
"It means a lot to all of us and to the region
and beating such strong opponents proves that we are doing something right," he says
Another star to shine has been 19-year-old centre-back Adrian Ovlien who came into the starting lineup in the summer when Nystuen was injured and has kept the CEO on the bench for the rest of the season
"I am more motivated with the work outside of the pitch nowadays
and it is time for me to step back," Nystuen says
saying that he could consider retirement at the end of the season
"Adrian is a local lad; I signed him in 2013
and I am proud that he is now taking my place."
Nystuen would love to play a part in the historic final against champions Rosenborg
even though he knows he won't be in the starting XI
"I hope the team needs me for the last few minutes
and that would mean that we have a lead to protect," he says
Kongsvinger won't change their style of play against the strongest team in the country and intend to try and take the lead
We will try and take the game to Rosenborg," he adds before insisting that a second promotion in a row would not come too soon for the club
There is a saying in Norway: The road is the goal
It means that we should enjoy the process of making progress and getting closer to our destination."

In 1991, Mullah Krekar arrived in Norway as a refugee.
An Iraqi Kurd born under the name Najmeddine Faraj Ahmad, he has acknowledged he is the co-founder of Ansar al-Islam, a notorious Sunni Islamist group that targeted U.S. troops during the Iraq insurgency and has been linked to both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
While he says he no longer has any links to the group, the 58-year-old Krekar faced multiple criminal charges in Norway, earning himself the label of a "danger to national security" from the Supreme Court of Norway and a place on a United Nations list of terrorists.
Yet Norway can't deport Krekar. The country has had an expulsion order against him since 2003, but it has been unable to send him to Iraq due to Norway's humanitarian concerns that he may face torture or execution there.
Last month, Norway released Krekar from prison, where he had served almost three years for death threats against Prime Minister Erna Solberg and three Kurds. Now the country faces a dilemma: What to do with an extremist non-citizen who cannot be deported?
Norway's solution, at least for the time being, is to keep him in the country, yet send him far, far away. On 2 February 2015, a court in Oslo said Krekar cannot stay in the Norwegian capital and instead must live in Kyrksaeteroera, a village with a few thousand inhabitants that is a nine-hour drive away.
Under the court's orders, the married father of four would live at a refugee center in the village and be required to check in with police several times a week.
"With some misgivings, the court considers that the basic national interest, at least until 31 December 2015, must take precedence over Faraj's right to a family life, freedom to move freely throughout the country and to choose his own place of residence," the court's decision read, according to Agence France-Presse.
The move is reminiscent of other "internal deportations" throughout history: There are even echoes of Leon Trotsky's brief time in Norway, where he lived under house arrest in a rural area before eventually being deported to Mexico. It comes at a time of intense scrutiny about Islamist extremism in Europe in the wake of the rise of the Islamic State militant group and last month's terrorist attacks in Paris.
Norway's hope is that Krekar will leave Norway at some point: According to the newspaper Aftenposten, there are talks with Italy to deport him there so he can face more charges; Germany and Switzerland have also been explored as possibilities.
For now, however, Krekar is appealing the decision to send him to Kyrksaeteroera -- and staying at a secret location in Oslo.
UPDATED: Norwegian police were dealing with yet another multiple murder case this week
after a 65-year-old man killed his two grown daughters and a grandchild before killing himself
One of the women found murdered worked for the local police
so officers from Oslo have taken over responsibility for the investigation
“This is a tragic incident that affects us all,” said Cecilie Lilaas-Skaari
police chief for Norway’s eastern region including the small community of Skogbygda in Nes
“This is a sad day for us in the eastern district
She said at a press conference Tuesday that police were called to the house
in the late morning and found it full of smoke
“There were also other emergency services in place at the site,” Grete Metlid
“and they understood very quickly that they faced a very serious situation.”
Metlid said at a press conference on Thursday that it was still too early to establish a motive for the triple murder-suicide
“We’re trying to get more information about what set this off
and what was the background for it,” Metlid said
Other members of the family were quickly notified
while police also “were taking care of our own crews” who worked with one of the victims and found her dead from gunshot wounds
Police could confirm on Thursday that the 65-year-old man shot and killed his 30-year-old daughter (who worked for the police) and her child
who were apparently visiting the family home
He also shot and killed his 24-year-old daughter who still lived at the large
visibly well-kept house in the rural area between Oslo and Kongsvinger
He then called police to report his murders and said he intended to kill himself as well
When police arrived they found all four family members dead at the scene along with the family’s dog
Metlid of the Oslo Police said there no known health- or treatment records for the assailant
“but it’s natural that we investigate his mental and physical health.” The younger woman was said to have still been living at the house with her parents
The woman who is the mother and grandmother of the three victims has so far declined to say anything
according to the attorney who was quickly appointed by the state to represent her
Authorities have not released the identities of all involved nor have they been publicly reported
in keeping with media custom in Norway to shield surviving family members
“This is an absolutely terrible and gruesome case,” Salomon told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Thursday
“It must be the worst nightmare anyone can experience.”
Neighbours had earlier told NRK there was never any sign of trouble at the home
never any noise from them,” longtime local resident Roy Aasvangen told NRK
He described the scene outside the house on Tuesday as “unreal,” after police cars
ambulances and two helicopters descended on the neighbourhood
along with “so many officers wearing bullet-proof vests and carrying weapons.”
The local church opened to provide a place for neighbours to gather if they needed someone to talk to
and a crisis team was set up by local officials
The church has remained open as a local gathering place all week
“This is deeply tragic and there’s great sorrow in our community
where everyone knows everyone,” said Nes Mayor Tove Nyhus
It’s the latest in a series of murders in Norway since the Christmas and New Year holidays

10-month sentence for making threats against the current prime minister and three Kurds
A court in Oslo on has authorised police to banish radical Iraqi Islamist preacher Mullah Krekar to a remote Norwegian village
The mullah, 58, who has been living in Norway since 1991
founded the radical Islamist group Ansar al-Islam
He was released from prison at the end of January after serving a two-year
10-month sentence for making threats against the prime minister
The police had invoked special measures to order Krekar
to live in a refugee centre in Kyrksaeteroera
a village of 2,500 people situated 500km (300 miles) from the capital
The defence had argued that the court needed to examine the legality of the decision
which prohibits the married father of four from leaving the village and which requires him to report to local police three times a week
the court considers that the basic national interest
must take precedence over Faraj’s right to a family life
freedom to move freely throughout the country and to choose his own place of residence,” read the court’s decision
appealed against the decision and asked that it be suspended pending review
Krekar has been living under risk of deportation since 2003 after Norwegian authorities ordered him to be expelled
claiming he posed a threat to national security
While Norway’s court system has upheld the ruling
Norwegian law bars him from being deported to Iraq
While Krekar acknowledges having co-founded Ansar al-Islam
he insists he has not led the group since 2002
The preacher and the group Ansar al-Islam figure on United Nations and US lists of terrorist groups or individuals

Action from last year’s National Street Soccer Championships in Norway
The Army is to take its popular ‘gatefotball’ program into a low-security prison in the Norwegian city of Kongsvinger
The Salvation Army in Norway is kicking off a new ministry initiative by taking its street soccer program behind bars
the Army’s Director of Prison Ministries in Norway
said ‘gatefotball’ [Norwegian for street soccer] would be officially launched today at Kongsvinger Prison
Street soccer has been a popular Army ministry program for many years
Yuri said it had been “a well-tried project” within the Army’s Addiction Rehabilitation Services since 1980 and was “a natural next step” to take it into the prison system
There are more than 20 Army-run street soccer teams for men and women across the country
The Army has also been responsible for the national team since 2005
and in 2017 hosted the Homeless World Cup in Oslo
Yury said the Army believed a person could not be “a competing sportsman” and be addicted to drugs and alcohol
The Army has forged a strong relationship in recent years with Kongsvinger Prison through the visitation of ministry teams
he met with prison authorities and discussed the possibility of introducing a street soccer program
“They accepted it with open arms,” Yury said
The Army then set about securing finance to construct a pitch and buy equipment
“This project comes with a price,” Yuri said
“The street soccer pitch costs money; equipment costs money; a coach costs money.” But he said the Army was prepared to absorb these costs to “see the lives of players being transformed; people regaining meaning in life”
Yury said the pitch installed in the prison was about 22m long by 16m wide
which was smaller than a standard street soccer pitch: “They didn’t have enough space for the full-size
“The first game will be between the inmates and prison staff,” he said
“I cannot wait to see them play.”
a prison team will be allowed outside once a week to use the Army’s community pitch to train and play against other community teams
“As we say in Russia [Yuri is from Russia]: In the healthy body
You learn to set goals and learn to achieve them; you learn to take responsibility for your actions on and off the pitch
would be introduced to a street soccer team in their area so they could “continue with their rehabilitation”

The Norwegian government claimed it was boosting border control earlier this month and announced Tuesday that the stricter control will be extended until November 11
The reason is an ongoing assessment that the threat of a terrorist attack has risen
The government first announced higher threat- and security levels on October 8
mostly because of the ever-worsening situation in the Middle East
Norway’s justice ministry has warned that Israel’s attacks on Gaza and
Lebanon have raised threat levels against Jewish and Israeli targets
That’s led to expansion of police protection around
Surveillance at border crossings was also allegedly boosted
with Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl claiming the heightened border control “gives police greater opportunity to collect information on travelers.”
Earlier measures were also supposed to control the entry of criminal gang members from Sweden and others who may have been hired to carry out terrorist attacks
That’s what’s suspected in recent attacks in other Scandinavian capitals
“The background for my decision (to extend border control) is that the terror threat is still high
following the incidents in Stockholm and Copenhagen,” Engh stated in her announcement on Tuesday
“In addition there’s a possible connection between foreign powers and recruitment of criminal networks to carry out terrorist attacks in Europe.”
Norway has many entry points along its lengthy border to Sweden
At least two of them along roads running east of Kongsvinger showed no signs of police or customs agents last week
State broadcaster NRK has reported that most of the border control efforts have been concentrated on ferries arriving from Denmark
and at the main border crossing on the E6 highway at Svinesund
Tone Vangen of the state police directorate has said that the goal is to “give police some more means” of carrying out border control
also within Norway and not just more visible or physical control of all travelers
“There’s no reason to think that passing the border will take more time than earlier,” Vangen said
The initial control measures were meant to remain in effect for 20 days
with Mehl stressing that she “won’t rule out” further extentions beyond November 11 if deemed necessary

Police believe the father of two young Chechen girls
grabbed by masked men after getting off a school bus in south-eastern Norway on Tuesday afternoon
and a case over the girls’ ongoing foster care was to be heard this week
More details emerged about the abduction late on Tuesday night
Hedmark police released photos and named the two sisters as six-year-old Rajana and eight-year-old Somaja
They also named the suspected father as Mansur Mahasev
The girls were taken by two masked men after getting off their school bus at Masterudveien
Police believed the girls’ father was at the scene of the kidnapping
It was not known if any of the other children on the bus witnessed the ordeal
The two girls were living in a foster home
Police prosecutor Iren Johnsen Dahl told NRK Mahasev had then hindered the foster parents from calling the police so authorities weren’t notified about the kidnapping until half an hour later
Police were unsure whether the car had headed for Finnskogen and Sweden
“Most probably it has driven towards Kongsvinger,” Dahl said
Customs officials and Swedish police were involved in the investigation
Kongsvinger police chief Bjørn Berntsen said there had been a number of interesting tips since the news broke on Tuesday afternoon
we now have a clearer picture of what type of car the children disappeared in,” Bertsen told newspaper Dagbladet
“We are still searching for a silver car
But we have not received tips from anyone who has seen the car after the disappearance from the school bus outside Kongsvinger.”
“He disagrees with the Norwegian authorities’ allegation of negligence in the biological family
but I find it inappropriate to comment on the details of this now,” Elden later told newspaper VG
The foster case was to be handled by the Oslo county child welfare board this week
where it would have been determined if the children would remain placed in a foster home
the family had been living at an address in Grorud
Technical investigations were taken over by Oslo police
Armed officers raided the father’s home around eight o’clock on Tuesday night
but can not say anything about what findings may have been made,” said Dahl
NRK reported police did not remain at the home for long
Paulsson said the school of less than 120 pupils was in shock
and they had cancelled their end-of-term summer party on Tuesday evening
“This of course affects us strongly,” she told NRK
and now we must only hope for the best.”
Kongsvinger mayor Øystein Østgaard said the municipality was working to help inform and support families
parents and the whole community must be informed,” he said
it may be appropriate to get a team in place from the municipality with psychologists and others who can help.”
and this is actually in the outskirts of the town
in an area of Austmarka,” Østgaard said
and this affects the whole community there.”
