The battery company Freyr must lay off several employees and make "significant downsizing." The production of battery cells in Mo i Rana is now put on hold
Read in Norwegian.
Freyr employees were notified that the battery company must significantly downscale in order to adapt to new market conditions for battery cells within the battery industry
"Sadly, we must reduce the number of employees in the company to ensure financial runway for the company," says the CEO of Freyr Battery, Tom Jensen, to Rana Blad
Freyr has about 60 employees in Mo i Rana in Northern Norway
Jensen informs that the most significant reduction will be in Mo i Rana
Jensen highlights that Freyr will still have employees in Mo i Rana and that the company still considers the city the best place in Norway for battery production
One of the biggest challenges that Freyr is facing is the low prices of battery cells produced in China
this makes it harder to compete with Chinese producers
particularly if customers are unwilling to pay more for products produced in Norway
Freyr will focus on research and development in the pilot factory
Jensen states that Freyr must act now to ensure long-term stability
"Freyr will focus on research and development in the pilot factory

Freyr has built a pilot factory in Mo i Rana
as well as a large building intended for gigafactory cell production
where 86,000 m2 of a total plan of 146,000 m2 has been built today
According to NRK
Freyr now plan to use the pilot battery factory to pack several batteries into a larger battery that can produce a higher voltage or deliver more power
Freyr has received 200 million in government support for the development of the pilot factory and detailed planning of Giga Arctic as well as a digital battery platform for the development of batteries
which can be used in a longer perspective given the full investment and realization of Giga Arctic
it was reported that former CEO Tom Einar Jensen had received a salary and bonus of a total of NOK 27 million for 2021
the board received a total remuneration and share options with a total value of over NOK 60 million
Freyr states that the value of the shares has fallen since 2022

The Nordic dreams of gigafactory production have taken another hit, with Freyr Battery announcing a pause to cell production and the loss of jobs
Management met with employees on 29 August to break the news that there would be “considerable reductions” in workforce and the battery cell production at the Mo i Rana plant in northern Norway put on hold
CEO Tom Einar Jensen told national broadcaster NRK the reason was the tough competition from China
“There’s a considerable overcapacity of battery cells from China that makes prices fall so much that we have to go back to the drawing board,” he said
the company decided to halt the construction of a gigafactory in Norway and instead focus on the US
where tax breaks under the Inflation Reduction Act were more favourable
the company will now use the excess battery cells as a module and battery pack assembly business
It was planning to commence production of sample functional battery cells using the full automation of the Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) in Norway in the first half of 2024
CEO Tom Einar Jensen said: “Freyr works with alternative business models
and at Mo the areas of research and development using the existing CQP production line
development of digital battery solutions and module packaging will be the focus.”
In its second quarter earnings report released on 9 August
Freyr said it was focusing on “less capital intensive opportunities tied to downstream modules and packs which offer the fastest and most readily financeable paths to first revenues and cash flows.”
Jensen said the investment was not wasted and the company would work to develop the Norwegian battery industry
but “working on a different part of the value chain” than originally foreseen
The Giga Arctic plant investment set it back roughly $2.5 billion of investment in 86,000 sq m
It spans 13,000 sq m of industrial scale cell production line
laboratory and floor space for further development
In neighbouring Sweden, Northvolt is not commenting (we did ask) on fears from the provincial government in Quebec
that a strategic review could mean an 18-month delay to building a gigafactory there
Economy minister Pierre Fitzgibbon said on X the battery slowdown was worldwide
Production at the plant was due to begin in 2026
Northvolt Six is supposed to be Canada’s first fully integrated battery manufacturing plant
making lithium-ion cells for electric cars
The first batteries were expected out of the production lines in 2026

A rendering of the new Mo i Rana Airport with the Northern Lights
Norwegian airports operator Avinor Group is to build a new airport at Mo i Rana
Project director Bjarte Nesse told Tara Craig about the ambitious plans
Mo i Rana may have a population just shy of 20,000 people
but this small Norwegian town punches well above its weight in terms of industry
A market town from the 18th Century onwards
it became renowned for both mining and boatbuilding
which dominated the local economy until the 1990s
environmentally friendly industries are emerging
Situated at the innermost point of the Ranfjord
Mo i Rana is just 80km south of the Arctic Circle
with proximity to the coast bringing colder winters than are found further inland
Heavy snow is common throughout the winter
The town is served by a regional airport situated 10km north of Mo i Rana
Avinor Group confirmed the project in 2014 and
appointed Nordic – Office of Architecture and Haptic to design the new facility
Norway's Ministry of Transport and Communications awarded a licence to Avinor for its construction and operation
The new airport will feature a 2,400m runway
a 6,000m2 terminal and a 4,000m2 service building
It will have space for operational and maintenance equipment
in addition to a 580-space passenger parking facility
Airports International put a series of questions to project director Bjarte Nesse
Bjarte Nesse is project director on the Mo i Rana build
The airport is expected to open in 2025 and is now at the preparatory stage
it was announced that Norwegian civil engineering firm AF Gruppen would build the new airport in Mo i Rana
It was appointed general contractor for the construction
and the contract between Avinor and AF Gruppen was signed in September
The construction will take place on a collaborative basis
meaning that Avinor and AF Gruppen will work together to find the best waysto carry out the project
Immediately after the signing of the contract
Avinor and AF Gruppen will research the best solutions for the project and agree on a final target price
The construction contract for this phase will help ensure that the overall project is carried out within Avinor's cost framework
Phase two will also fall within this framework
the construction work started on the site at Fagerlia
and on September 26 the first charge of dynamite went off
demolition experts Nitrex will set off 180,000kg of dynamite
to prepare fora new road to the new airport
a few kilometres to the south of the existing facility
The construction of the new airport hasa cost framework of €314m
it was confirmed that the Norwegian state will contribute €257m to the project
The project is a joint venture between the state
Rana (Mo i Rana is administrative centre of the municipality) and local businesses
The municipality will provide €42.9m of funding
while local businesses and private donors will contribute €14.3m
build and put into operation a new future-oriented and environmentally adapted airport in accordance with current and future environmental requirements and standards
Our goal is for the Rana community to be proud of its new airport
arrangements will be made for buses and taxis and charging stations for electric cars will be installed
Remote air traffic control towers are planned and there will be satellite-based navigation solutions
We expect to have many different IT systems in use at Mo i Rana
Among the key systems are: common use passenger processing systems (CUPPS) equipment at check-in and gate counters
with Amadeus ACUS (airport common use service) and common use self-service (CUSS) check-in kiosks
although the framework agreement will be up for renewal in 2024
We also have an agreement with SITA for the provision of a self-service bag drop
IBM will provide the AODB (airport operational database) and we will be looking to set up a new RMS (resource management system) agreement in 2023
we do not have a single IT or airport management system
but several interactive systems that need to be seen in context
A 580-space passenger car park will be among the amenities offered by the new facility
Avinor has been commissioned by the Ministry of Transport to build the new airport in Mo i Rana
enhanced transport service for the larger community in Helgeland and is expected to boost business in the region
Polarsirkelen Lufthavnutvikling (PLU; Polarsirkelen airport development)
and the rest of the local community to develop an efficient
The existing airport is surrounded by high mountains
which creates challenges for incoming and outgoing flights
It is therefore unsuitable for longer runways and larger aircraft
The impetus for building a new airport is a desire to strengthen the transport offering and business life in Helgeland through a longer runway
which will make it possible to offer direct routes to Oslo
The current airport has a capacity of around 120,000 travellers per year
the new Mo i Rana airport will be able to handle 196,000 passengers in its opening year
rising to 220,000 over the course of 15 years
Our passengers are a combination of business and leisure travellers
Small planes carrying up to 39 seats have a limited capacity
The increased capacity is expected to boost both leisure and business travel through Mo I Rana
The new airport will provide opportunities for major development of the Helgeland region
the capacity of the airport makes it practically impossible to host larger events
Business development will also generate a need for travel
Norwegian construction company Hent has been commissioned to build Freyr Battery’s 120,000m2 Giga Arctic battery factory at Mo I Rana
With a more international labour market and employees from all over the world at the battery factory
and all the activity around developments in the industry
there will be an increased need for accessible seats
Oslo will give leisure travellers a broader offer of available seats at affordable prices
most leisure trips are taken to and from the nearest major airports
be able to support a population of more than 160,000 people in Norway and Sweden
with new routes and connections both in Norway and across Europe
The new airport has been designed to echo the nearby mountains and glacier
What will set the new terminal building apart is that the architectural design has been adapted to the surrounding landscape
Its setting has been interpreted in a facade inspired both by the neighbouring mountains and the Svartisen glacier
It is also unusual to build an entirely new airport in Arctic conditions
This requires a series of adaptations during construction phase and later operational use
Large windows are intended to make the most of the short daylight hours during winter
The new airport will have a runway of 2,200-2,400m and is designed to handle larger aircraft such as category C (737) and possibly category E
which will make it possible to offer direct routes to Oslo as well as international routes
This will make all of Europe accessible by direct flights from Mo i Rana
at Avinor we always work hard to attract airlines
A longer runway will make it possible to offer direct routes to Oslo and to southern Europe and other international destinations
which will open new possibilities regarding airlines and routes
the airport will be equipped for winter operations and will operate all year round
longer runway will enable the airport to provide direct flights all over Europe
Avinor is working hard to reduce the environmental footprint when building and operating airports
To assure and document sustainability and make the new airport project as environmentally friendly as possible
we plan to certify the project in accordance with BREEAM assessment method (for the sustainable built environment)
December 2022 saw Avinor’s board of directors approve the construction of a new airport at Bodø
The new facility at Mo i Rana is not the only new Avinor-run airport on the horizon
the group’s board of directors approved the construction of a new Bodø Airport
not including the purchase of land and excluding financing costs
with the remaining costs covered by the government and local funds
Avinor CEO Abraham Foss said:“We are pleased to make this decision following a lengthy process that has involved the Norwegian armed forces [which shares the airport facilities] and the municipality of Bodø
and the urban development project will have a major impact on the entire region.”
The project has not been without its challenges
not least because of Avinor’s post-pandemic financial status
“It goes without saying that this has been a difficult issue for Avinor,” said Foss
we are keen to develop a new airport and we have always been clear about this
The municipality of Bodø is also keen to see a new airport built
while also being given the opportunity to build a new neighbourhood
the project has enjoyed broad political support in the Storting [the Norwegian parliament]
this is a very costly project that will have an impact on our finances for many years to come
the municipality of Bodø and the Norwegian armed forces
It is only natural that the path to a final decision has been rather long and winding
even if all parties involved had a clear desire to get it over the finishing line.”
The first contract win will be announced at the beginning of January
This will be for the construction of the runway
aircraft stands and other external infrastructure
The new Bodø Airport will be located around 900m to the south of the present airport
The latter will remain operational until the day before the new airport opens for operations

Several industrial initiatives that are now being planned are based on developing business parks as industrial symbioses
the development of the concept as scientific recognition is initially examined
It deals with the development of industrial practices in relation to geographical location
organization and links of production systems
It is also about how we can plan such industrial parks with a view to promoting efficient and sustainable energy and material flows
The planning of the industrial parks of the future may have a circular approach depending on who is invited
The presemtation discusses strategies and dilemmas seen from an industrial and planning perspective
It is all about finding the recipe for robust industrial solutions that benefit sustainable social development
Commercial speculative investments on the other hand
The presentation combines theoretical research literature and empirical examples that include business parks of slightly different types of composition and development phases
The review presents both business planning strategies
and actual establishments of industrial symbioses in Norway in different phases
the industrial park in Mo i Rana and Herøya in Norway
The review has some reflections on the challenges and experiences with this type of business establishment
New types of infrastructure and types of workplaces in these parks are also discussed in the presentation
Industrial symbioses can sometimes be linked to the restructuring of existing industrial clusters that make them become more capable to share and streamline resource flows than what is the case for conventional parks without this focus
it may be a matter of building completely new park arrangements from scratch
as exemplified by the industrial symbiosis between a green house
dairy and poultry slaughterhouse in Kviamarka in Jæren
it is not always easy to fully convert conventional industrial parks established over a long period of time into industrial symbioses based on circular solutions
are one of several industrial park examples that are not capable of establishing a fully closed symbioses
this has to do with lack of sufficient space
It can also be that the parties that could share material flows through exchange of energy or material through pipelines are not co-located side by side but are in stead placed in different places of the park
Besides old unpractical and massive building structures and equipment can be very expensive to renovate and use
Some businesses find it more favourable to seek for opportunities of linking their value chain with partners located outside the park boundaries
The excursion to Herøya with energy flows between fertilizer production and several other chemical industries is just one of several example of this form of far distance linkage practise
The C02 emissions from the fertilizer factory are for example a resource input to production of carbon dioxide used in the brewing industry
the cement production in Brevik on the other side of the fjord from Herøya will ship and store its capture of CO2 in the CCS storage infrastructure in Øygarden
It thus illustrates the way some symbioses can take place far away from the park as well
Industrial symbioses can be analysed on the basis of structure and connections in the form of energy and material flows
as well as smart electronic networks and piping systems
Nor must we forget knowledge and information exchange
a symbiosis centre can constitute an arena for knowledge sharing
co-creation and development of innovative solutions in a number of fields
Here you can also gather PhD students and researchers
entrepreneurs and established industrial players
both those who are already in the industrial park
The symbiosis center will thus have an important task in profiling and coordinating the park's content externally
it is about being able to create a professional environment based on trust
reciprocity and openness across industries and areas of expertise
finding the best solution regarding the industrial park's composition is a challenge because it all depends on market and regulatory conditions and these are constantly changing
Attractive offers in other countries can even ruin some investment plans
something Mo i Rana is now experiencing with Freyr
which has chosen to scale down its plans here and instead move investments to the US
geopolitical conflicts may mean that alternative suppliers of materials and products must be found
It is precisely this uncertainty about the world around us now and in the years to come that challenges the planning itself
These changes in the plans challenge Rana municipality and real estate investors at this location
which has already taken the initiative to expand the capacity of kindergartens
schools and homes for the many who could move here to work at the large battery factory
Examples invoke the responsibility of central public authorities to take their share of the investment risk through financial support in the initial phase before these projects are able to stand on their own feet
The public contribution can sometimes come in the form of support for infrastructure such as power supply and roads
other times in the form of research grants or capital managed by the industrial players themselves in these investments
many projects find that the public sector's efforts are not being made or are not being implemented quickly enough
UiO:Energy and Environment coordinates The Norwegian Research School in Renewable Energy (NorRen)
The summer school brings together PhD scholars from Norway and abroad who work with energy regardless of subject
academics and experts within relevant fields will interact to develop a better understanding of the energy transition

technology or simple friendships that inspire each and one of us to be a better man with every single day forward
A world where books would come with free unlimited coffee
personal force fields would bring everyone to the point of a happy and meaningful life filled with joyful experiences and red carpets rolled everywhere and it would always just be another day in the office
don’t tell me that now you are expecting me to say: “But there is this or that and reality is different”
because it is reality - and I am not imagining it
Norway is my proof that joy and happiness lives in every day’s little things
most helpful and compassionate people live among us
where since day one when I for the first time stepped out of a small plane in an even smaller airport I have been walking like on the red carpet
I am not saying everything in Norway for international people like me is easy
it’s not but here you’re probably thinking there's a “But”
here's my opinion: I have been choosing to see my journey this way
I choose to see goodness in everyone I meet
I choose to experience the greatest outdoor adventures in the most beautiful country
I choose to wake up every day with a smile on my face
because I am part of Norway and I have no reason not to be happy here
how did this all start and why even Norway
By now you may have sensed that English is not my native language
in fact for more than half of my life I didn't even know this language
Just like Norwegian language never even crossed my mind until on the very last day of September 2022 I had this thought for the first time
It may not seem that long ago and it’s not
although a lot has changed in Mo I Rana and the surrounding areas people’s perception of international people
And nevertheless people like me play a big role - internationals
enormous support of Rana commune and different government agency employees involved dealing on official level
With every serious situation involved that's been thrown at everyone migrating from another country
With our positive attitude and respect towards each other
acceptance of our differences make everyone’s life better
safety and further development of being the happiest society in the whole world
now I am absolutely sure you may want to know what is this dude up to and who is he…
Here I am a single father to an adorable teenage boy of 14 years
For the last 8 months we have called Mo I Rana our home
to build a strong and vibrant cultural center for spending meaningful time with new or old friends
possibly having a place that anyone at any age would feel open to visit for social gatherings
To come with grandparents for early Sunday coffee or know that your teenage kid is safe there after school hours
Just to have a place that any age group would call theirs and would know that it’s the place to go at any day of the week and any time of the day
It’s my little secret and my little advantage to use this article for such a purpose
but once a man has his eyes set on the vision
then it’s just a matter of time and steps taken
little by little and I believe Mo I Rana deserves only the best and will open doors to a new social club
I want to be truthful and know that being true to myself and everyone around is my top virtue
There has been a time when mindless drifting was my daily state of mind
And looking from afar that wouldn’t be possible to tell
I was married for a long time and I have two children
running a private business with my spouse at that time as a pastry production company on a small scale but what’s mindless about that
In life you either make a choice or someone else will make it for you
It takes some time for anyone to realize which one will give purpose and meaning and appreciation and which one will deteriorate you in atoms
The past is nothing that should define anyone as long as it’s used as a stepping stone for outgrowing and defining a new course of actions
These and many other brilliant thoughts flow through my mind from many useful resources - books
Just by walking among Helgeland’s giants in outdoor wilderness
I’m sure I’m not the only one “crazy” who knows that
the feeling you have being out there on top
Strength of indestructible mountains above clouds
the feeling of accomplishment by getting to the top
it doesn’t matter if in life you are making small or big business deals
they involve equal amounts of effort and time
I truly have a great time and a smile all over my face by writing this piece and I’m not done here with life’s wisdoms
like for those familiar with Stoicism philosophy
remember Epictetus’s famous observation that every situation has two handles
or two interpretations - and that we choose which one to grab
We decide to feel harmed or to not feel harmed
And once we make that choice - choosing not to be offended
choosing to see an opportunity to practice a virtue - then we really haven’t been harmed
this is my way of experiencing my hardships and joys now living in Northern Norway
living through two winters and the first full summer still ahead of me
It’s that support from my first employer here from company McNeil Bemanner AS and everyone involved back in autumn of 2022 working for Nortura in Bjerka
transitioning to working for Freyr Battery pilot project and being employer by Haneseth Facility Sor AS and from there moving to my current employment at Arctic Rein og Vilt AS
Everyone I have met and been dealing with deserves loud cheering and a pat on their shoulder
Norwegians by far are one of the kindest and supportive and open people I have met
you can be very proud of these virtues and it's why Norway celebrates its national birthday on 17th of May with children smiling and their faces full of joy rather than exhibiting fearmongering with military parades
taken as super easy to settle down for good in a new place
in a new country with new experiences and many challenges
I must go with my new favorite truth of life: “the greatest competition in our lives happens between our ears”
I hope some little inspiration will sparkle out of my words and by that I may be giving from my heart back to anyone who knows me and who will in the near or distant future

(Skjermdump)
Freyr battery factory has already begun terminating employees due to the downscaling of the battery factory Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
"No locations will be unaffected," says CEO Birger Steen
The company also stopped projects in Finland and Sweden
Les på norsk
it was revealed that the battery company Freyr will minimize spending on Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana in 2024
the company held a briefing in which the CEO informed about the process and answered questions from those present
The meeting was streamed by Rana Blad.
He repeated that there will be no further development of the battery factory in Mo i Rana in 2024 as originally planned
the company is betting its all on the battery factory Giga America in Georgia
The reason is the American support package for green industry
which subsidizes national – and thus also Freyr's – battery production by 35 percent
Giga Arctic was initially intended to be Freyr's mothership
which Giga America was to be modeled after
Steen says that European support schemes for battery production cannot compete with the US's support scheme
Freyr has applied for funds from the Ministry of Trade
Industry and Fisheries of around NOK 9.5 billion for Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
Steen says that there has been no formal response from the ministry yet
the Freyr employees were notified that there would be an "extensive termination process," as part of cutting costs
"The employees were notified yesterday," says Steen and promises "proper severance pay" for everyone who loses their job
This is a market where there is a lot of competition for talent
Freyr has around 60 employees in Mo i Rana
The company has around 400 employees in Norway in total
who are now in danger of losing their jobs
Steen expressed concern about losing the employees that Freyr wants to keep to develop technology at the Giga Arctic pilot factory
"This is a market where there is a lot of competition for talent
and we will try to keep those we want to continue," says the director
He says that no team or location will be unaffected by the layoffs
"But we will continue to invest in Mo i Rana
which is the heart of our technology development."
This is how far Freyr Battery had come with the building of the battery factory Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana in January 2023
Steen says that Freyr has been portrayed as a company that only fills its pockets with government money and that it should be possible to work around the US IRA via Europe's Green Deal and Norway's green industrial lift
"The reality is that it costs 100 dollars per kilowatt hour (kWh) to produce a battery cell
the USA now subsidizes the production of battery cells with 35 dollars per kWh in a start-up phase
So you can produce batteries in the USA for 65 dollars or for 100 dollars in Europe," explains the CEO
The battery company's pilot factory in Mo i Rana was ready in March 2023
and Giga Arctic was scheduled to be ready in 2024 with eight production lines
the factory is instead taking a break until further notice
Steen says that they want to keep Giga Arctic ready to start up quickly
Steen praises the reception Freyr has gotten from the local community
"The reception is of a quality I have not experienced before
He warns against becoming dependent on China for batteries
"If we do not get our own battery production in Europe during the 2030s
we will be 90 percent dependent on China for battery cells
And we believe that battery cells will be the most important energy carrier in the society of the future," says Steen
"Being dependent on a geopolitical competitor is not the best."
Freyr's projects in Sweden and Finland are also put on hold
Freyr originally planned to build a cathode factory in Wasa
"We are not going to build a battery factory in Finland under these framework conditions," says Steen
Freyr writes in a press release that they have received NOK 183 million in support from Innovation Norway and Enova
Freyr has invested NOK 4 billion in Mo i Rana since the plans were launched in 2019
the company has been promised a loan guarantee and a possible loan from Eksfin of up to NOK 4 billion
the Chair of the County Council in Nordland
stated that the county council will assist the Rana community with challenges in connection with the downscaling at Freyr
Freyr is now moving its headquarters from Luxembourg to the USA
The goal now is for Giga America to produce its first battery cells in 2025

Freyr is building the Giga Arctic factory in Mo i Rana
Giga Arctic was scheduled to be in production at the end of 2024
The battery company Freyr has decided to cut costs in building the battery factory in Mo i Rana
"The news of Freyr putting the factory building for battery production on hold in Mo i Rana is sad and severe," says the Chair of the County Government
Les på norsk
The battery company Freyr will cut the costs at their battery venture in Mo i Rana in 2024
This was revealed in a press release from the company on Thursday
Freyr is building the battery factory Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
The Giga factory has been referred to as potentially one of the largest investments in mainland Norway in recent times
Freyr is now choosing to minimize Giga Arctic spending for 2024
"The decision to minimize spending is intended to allow for continued technology development at the CQP while Freyr continues to work with stakeholders in Norway and Europe to establish competitive regulatory framework conditions for scaling battery manufacturing," writes the company
CQP is Freyr's Customer's Qualification Plant on Mo.
"Norway and Europe have yet to offer a competitive response to the US Inflation Reduction Act (“IRA”) or similar incentives from Canada
FREYR plans to minimize spending on the project in 2024
secure the asset with the remaining committed capital spending
and continue to work with stakeholders in Norway and Europe to develop a mutually attractive policy solution," the press release reads
it was made known that Freyr would continue the project in Mo i Rana at a measured pace in favor of a US venture – the building of the Giga America factory in the state of Georgia
The company further pointed to an expectation of a potential Norwegian response to the US' financial support package for American businesses – meant to accelerate the construction of green industry in the US
"The news of Freyr putting the factory building for battery production on hold in Mo i Rana is sad and severe for the Rana community," says the Chair of the County Government
this may entail downsizing and that the planned giga factory in Mo will not be realized until the framework conditions in Norway and Europe are possibly changed," Eggesvik adds

Freyr Battery confirms the construction of a battery gigafactory in Mo i Rana
The Norwegian Government will support Freyr with NOK 4 billion
the Minister of Trade and Industry announced as he presented Norway's new battery strategy in Mo Industrial Park.
Minister of Trade and Industry Jan Christian Vestre (Labor Party) presented the government's new battery strategy on Wednesday
The goal is for Norway to be an attractive host country for sustainable and profitable activity throughout the battery value chain
as well as attracting the large giga factories
During the press conference Vestre held at the Mo Industrial Park
he announced that Freyr's board has approved the construction of the giga factory in Mo i Rana
Freyr's investment decision for Giga Arctic (formerly Giga Factory 1 and 2) is NOK 17 billion. The government will provide 4 billion NOK in the form of loans and guarantees for the giant factory
The Minister of Trade and Industry launched the following 10 measures for how Norway will further develop a coherent and profitable battery value chain:
the Norwegian value chain for batteries can employ tens of thousands of people and have a turnover of at least NOK 90 billion by 2030
Global demand is growing exponentially and Norway has very good conditions for success in this race"
says Minister of Trade and Industry Jan Christian Vestre in a press release.

which operates iron ore extraction northeast of Mo i Rana in Nordland
achieved record production in the third quarter of the year
That was revealed in a stock exchange announcement on Wednesday
The company produced 503 thousand tonnes of iron ore concentrate in the quarter
which is a significant increase from the same quarter the previous year – and is the strongest quarter in the company's history
"It is extra gratifying that we concurrently manage to maintain quality while increasing volume," the message reads
up from NOK 230.5 million in the third quarter of 2022
Rana Gruber writes that the increase is due to higher realized prices than recorded income from shipments in the previous quarter
and currency effects from a weakened Norwegian krone
Together with operating costs of NOK 228.7 million
this resulted in increased operating profit
The net profit after tax was NOK 171.2 million
up from NOK 55.4 million in the third quarter of 2022

The development of Freyr's battery factory
continues at a measured pace with the expectation of a potential Norwegian response to the US support package for American businesses – meant to accelerate the development of green industry in the US
This is made clear in the company's quarterly report for the first quarter of 2023
Giga Arctic is Freyr Battery's planned battery factory in Mo i Rana
The NOK 40 billion Gigafactory has been referred to as potentially one of the most prominent establishments in mainland Norway in recent times
Freyr announced a decision to invest of NOK 17 billion in Giga Arctic in June 2022 (Norwegian only)
Freyr needs more than NOK 15 billion in additional capital injections to complete the factory.
At the same time that the company is developing Giga Arctic
the company has also announced a venture in the US with the building of the Giga America factory in Coweta County in the state of Georgia
The American expansion was accelerated by the Biden administration's aforementioned legislation
The quarterly report reveals that financial discussions include the initial and subsequent phases of Giga America
which is supported by the IRA – as well as Giga Arctic
which is supported by the ongoing project financing process and the anticipated Norwegian response to the IRA
Freyr announces it has received a letter from the Norwegian government stating that it is now updating and adjusting its response to the US Inflation Reduction Act
as well as the EU's Temporary Crisis Transition Framework
the government aims for solutions that will strengthen Norway's comparative advantages and preconditions
the government also emphasizes Norway's ambition to be an attractive host nation across the battery value chain and to attract major battery-related investments in gigafactories through its national battery strategy
The government also indicated that a detailed summary of its response to the IRA would come this summer
The US' new subsidies for its own industries have potentially major consequences for foreign industries
for instance such as reduced competitiveness for Norwegian businesses' export to the US market
that Norway is not part of the EU brings challenges for Freyr's production of other products than battery cells
This comes as a result of electric car batteries must originate in the EU or UK from 2027
Norway is considered a third country and will be required to pay ten percent in taxes
As High North News recently reported, the plans for electric car batteries at the factory in Mo i Rana was therefore put on hold until further notice
battery cells are produced. These are put into modules and then placed in containers for storage.
"Until the Norwegian government finds a solution to the EU tax
we will not be producing electric car batteries in Norway," said the Executive Chairman of Freyr to HNN
"We might be able to build electric car batteries in the next factory that will be built in Norway if the government is able to solve the issue of the EU tax
but we do not have any plans for this in Norway as of today."
"Batteries that are produced in Mo i Rana will go to energy storage systems
So they are not subject to the tax in question," said Torstein Dale Sjøtveit to High North News
"Developing Giga Arctic and Giga America in parallel is done with the intention of maximizing the option value of the company
and other key stakeholders," reads the quarterly report
The company notes recently announced support packages for gigafactories in Germany
and writes that while awaiting a government response to the IRA
Freyr will proceed with the development of Giga Arctic at a measured pace
Freyr spent USD 64.1 million on previously authorized investments in the first quarter of 2023
of which approximately 75 percent was allocated to Giga Arctic
with the remainder going primarily to the completion of CQP

Freyr Battery was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the summer of 2021 to raise capital for the company's venture in Norway
the company has also extended its ventures to the US
The company secured NOK 7.3 billion in new equity at the stock market listing to realize the battery factory Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
Freyr's stock price was between 9 and 10 dollars
while it had reached a peak of a little over 15 in November 2022
and figures from Nordnet show that the stock is down a whopping 69 percent in the past 12 months
The stock price has dropped sharply by 28 percent in the past month
Earlier this month, the Norwegian news paper Finansavisen wrote that the drop has led to enormous losses in value for several of the Freyr owners' stocks and options.
"The stock price is a reflection of what we deliver
We work hard to demonstrate that we can produce batteries quickly and on a large scale
it will be visible in the stock price," said Chairman Tom Einar Jensen to Finansavisen earlier this fall
He added that the essential thing to Freyr at the moment is to demonstrate that the company can produce batteries of good quality in the customer qualification factory in Mo i Rana
as well as to finalize the funding for the two factories to be built in Norway and the US
The giga factory's establishment in Mo i Rana has been estimated to cost NOK 30 billion and has been referred to as potentially one of the largest establishments in mainland Norway in recent times
In June 2022, Freyr announced an investment decision of NOK 17 billion in Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana. The Norwegian government has said they will contribute NOK 4 billion in loans and guarantees for the giga factory
the company needs more than NOK 15 billion in extra capital injections to complete the factory
Freyr has previously presented plans to start production in Mo i Rana at the end of 2024
As High North News reported before the summer
the project in Mo i Rana is continuing at a measured pace – in favor of a venture in the US with the construction of the Giga America factory in the state of Georgia
The US venture was accelerated with the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
held an open meeting under the auspices of the Bodø region's development company
now under construction in Mo is scheduled to be in production in 2024
We hope to be able to present the first battery by then," says Sjøtveit
The company also reports that they have bought property "somewhere in Europe"."Until the Norwegian government finds a solution to the EU tax
we will not be producing electric car batteries in Norway," says Executive Chairman of Freyr
Freyr Battery's construction of Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana in Northern Norway is underway
The battery factory of NOK 17 billion will be one of the largest establishments in mainland Norway in recent times
Over 600 people are to be employed in this factory alone
The supply industry and a potential new gigafactory
There will be over 1000 people employed just in the construction phase
Giga Arctic is scheduled to be in production towards the end of 2024
"We hope to have a battery to present by then," says Executive Chairman of Freyr
Norway's non-membership of the EU and the US' new subsidies of the national industry puts a spanner in the works of the battery factory's production of other products than battery cells
Plans for electric car batteries from the factory in Mo in Northern Norway have been put on hold until further notice
we do not have any plans of producing electric car batteries in Norway
electric car batteries must have their origin in the EU or the UK
Norway is considered a third country and will be required to pay ten percent in taxes.
we will not be producing electric car batteries in Norway," says Sjøtveit to High North News
but we do not have any plans for this in Norway as of today
Batteries that are produced in Mo i Rana will go to energy storage systems
So they are not subject to the tax in question," says Stjøtveit.
only battery cells are produced in the Giga Arctic factory
These are put into modules and then placed in containers for storage
Freyr has bought properties in both Finland and the US
a location they are not willing to disclose at the moment
This is how far Freyr Battery has gotten in the construction of the battery factory Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
Freyr announced that they are accelerating their planned American expansion because of President Joe Biden's "Inflation Reduction Act" (IRA)
which amounts to an impressive USD 369 billion
The act comes into force this year and will ensure green restructuring in the US through subsidies
A number of the subsidies in the act depend on goods
having a certain proportion of components produced in the US or in countries with which the US has a free trade agreement
Work is currently taking place in the EU to ensure an exception to prevent European goods from losing their competitiveness in the American market
It is important for Norway to be a part of such an agreement.
Freyr Battery does not wait for the Norwegian government to solve the issue and is now developing American Giga America while simultaneously constructing the Giga Arctic factory in Mo i Rana
The initial phase of Giga America will be a cell production module of approx
After all the planned construction phases are concluded
Giga America is expected to be one of the largest projects within battery cell production in the world
The American factory will be established in Atlanta
"The average price of a battery in the world today is maybe 120-130 dollars
So that is a very strong driving force which makes us want to invest in the US as well," says Sjøtveit.
Freyr also announced last year an agreement with the Finnish city of Vaasa for the temporary lease of 130 hectares of land
The land will house Freyr's planned battery cell production facility in the EU and is part of the company's strategic cooperation with Vaasa to develop battery technology and production on an industrial scale in Finland
Torstein Dale Sjøtveit cannot say anything about the actual start of construction in Finland and the US
"What can you say about the property in Europe?"
"We have the one in Finland and we have also looked at property somewhere else in Europe
This is connected to the EU tax and that we are outside of the EU
we have not secured ourselves when it comes to electric car batteries
But we can hope for a solution," says Sjøtveit
There will be a need for major external contributions
Parallel with the construction of Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana
the local community prepares for the announced growth with residential construction
"There will be a need for major external contributions in supplier industries
He believes the actual number of employees at the factory in Mo is somewhat higher than the announced 1500
200 people are employed at the facility and Freyr consists of 350 employees
when the battery factory is in full operation
it is expected that the Rana community will grow by approx
5000 inhabitants when the partners and children of the employees are included
20 percent of the local investment in Freyr is also available for local businesses
Sjøtveit estimates that 21 local companies that have worked with Giga Arctic have delivered goods and services for almost NOK 400 million
Sjøtveit is clear that Freyr will also need local businesses going forward to keep the factory running around the clock
The project is initiated in Mo Industry Park
an industrial hub in the High North and one of Norway’s largest industry parks
It includes more than 100 companies an a staff of more than 2,300

is to be installed at the Elkem Rana factory
Elkem produced silicone and silicon products
Its smelter in Mo i Rana produces ferrosilicon
the carbon capturing facility will be the world’s first-ever such unit for capturing CO2 from ferrosilicon production
emissions from SMA Mineral will also be gradually phased into the cleansing facility
“Cutting carbon emissions is quite necessary
this project will create new jobs and secure the competitive edge of this industry
This is also in accordance with the sustainability strategy of Mo Industry Park
and the initiative will add cutting-edge expertise to the region”
says Director of Property Development in Mo Industry Park Jan Gabor
The project is a collaboration between Elkem and Mo Industry Park
Arctic Cluster Team and Aker Carbon Capture
The project is funded through Gassnova’s CLIMIT program
which is Norway’s national program for research
development and demonstration of CO2 capture and storing technology

and to be one of the winners of the Green Shift
Our mission is to offer advanced material solutions shaping a better and more sustainable future
We have recently released a climate map describing our ambition to reduce emissions while we increase our supplies for the green transition
Carbon capturing is a key technology to achieve a net zero by 2050”
“The test unit installed at Elkem Rana means that we are now taking one step ahead
The work that is to be done in Rana will also carry much relevance for other facilities
both in Elkem as well as for other actors in the industry

More according to the Norwegian government
The Norwegian government is pressing ahead with plans to build a new ‘Arctic Circle Airport’ near Mo i Rana despite intense opposition from many local governments in the region
A new airport at Mo i Rana would replace the town’s current small airport
It has a short runway that can only accept small propellor planes operated by Widerøe
The facilities at the proposed new airport would allow for direct flights to and from Oslo
and the possibility for flights to and from international destinations
Architect's plans for the proposed new airport
which would be located near the Arctic Circle in ..
Hareide said he feels a strong local and regional commitment to a new major airport in Mo i Rana
“Nordland County Council has pointed to this solution
parliament has decided that the new airport will be located in Mo i Rana
This plan is now being followed by the government
“Norwegian society is in a situation where the business sector has major challenges due to the coronavirus
Rana municipality will extend itself as far as possible to realize the largest growth project in Helgeland
and will therefore take on greater responsibility for financing a new airport in Rana,” read the statement
The total cost of the proposed new airport will be two billion Norwegian kroner ($195 million)
with much of the money provided by government
12 mayors elsewhere in the Helgeland region object to so much government money being spent in the name of the region
when they will see little benefit from a new airport
Norway's Minister of Transport and Communications Knut Arild Hareide insists the proposed new ..
More airport will benefit the whole of Helgeland
In a letter to the Ministry of Transport and Communications
the 11 mayors reminded Hareide that he does not speak for the whole of Helgeland
they claim analysis shows the new airport will result in the closure of the smaller airports at Mosjøen and Sandnessjøen
“Minister Bent Høie has now decided that Helgeland's main hospital will be located in Sandnessjøen and its surroundings
so it will be very irresponsible to build a major airport in Rana that will require the closure of Sandnessjøen Airport
This means that acutely ill patients cannot be transported by air ambulance from the main hospital in Sandnessjøen to the University Hospital in Tromsø or other major hospitals
Other municipalities also lose air ambulance flights if Mosjøen Airport is closed down.”
The 11 mayors also highlight the environmental impact of a new major airport
They ask that today’s airport infrastructure be maintained and further developed as part of the “green shift” that includes a transition to electric aircraft
will be cheaper and more environmentally friendly than large fossil-fuelled jets taking off and landing from a new major airport
Norway’s government and private sector is investing heavily in feasibility studies and research projects for electric aircraft
They are seen as a green alternative to Norway’s significant small airport infrastructure of today that serves many remote communities
The 12 mayors request a digital meeting with Hareide to discuss their concerns
Construction of the new airport is scheduled to start in the fall of 2020
The Freyr Board has approved the Norwegian company to build the first battery cell factory in Rana
for production to start in the first half of 2024
the plant has been designed for an annual capacity of 29 GWh
At Mo i Rana, Freyr is already building the so-called CQP (Customer Qualification Plant) production line
which is scheduled to come on stream in the second half of 2022
Freyr intends to use this production to manufacture sample cells for potential customers – to the tune of 2-gigawatt hours
With the decision now announced by the Board of Management
it is clear that the company’s first large-scale production plant will also be built there – this was final confirmation
The plans have also been adjusted several times
Freyr wanted to create two smaller factories in Rana
which would have produced NCM battery cells
only one plant is planned (with 150 per cent higher capacity than one of the smaller factories)
and Freyr is also reportedly planning a joint venture with Aleees to produce LFP cathode materials
Freyr says it intends to allocate about half of Giga Arctic’s production capacity to “long-term offtake partners.” The remaining volume will be reserved “to address exponentially growing market demand” – sold to customers without long-term commitments at the best possible price
The Freyr board credits this plan with the potential of $2 billion in sales per year
Freyr says it has received funding commitments totalling $1.6 billion
exceeding management’s leverage target
This includes 400 million euros from Eksfin
The Norwegian government’s national battery strategy was also presented at the Freyr event in Mo i Rana
The Giga Arctic is said to come at around 50 per cent lower investment costs per GWh of nominal capacity
Thanks to the high level of automation – as reported with equipment from British automation specialist Mpac Lambert – production per employee is expected to be 200 per cent higher than in current battery factories
accelerated commercial momentum and strong support from Eksfin
Giga Arctic represents one of Norway’s largest onshore industrial investments in recent decades,” says Torstein Dale Sjøtveit
Freyr aims to have built a total production capacity of 200 GWh
Giga Arctic in Mo i Rana could be expanded in the future: The company is evaluating adding a module and pack assembly and recycling and other applications at the site
Freyr has now entered into an important partnership for the equipment of the battery factories planned or under construction
a South Korean provider of automation solutions for battery plants
is to develop the equipment and automation solutions for the so-called CQP production line (Customer Qualification Plant) in Rana
as well as for Freyr’s planned gigafactories
The two companies have in common that Hana Technology is a pre-qualified supplier of 24M Technologies
and Freyr has also licensed the technology from 24M
The agreement specifies that Hana Technology will support areas that include pouch assembly
as well as scrap-discharge equipment for Freyr’s Gigafactories
Hana Technology will also collaborate with Freyr to review
Freyr Battery has taken another important step towards building the Giga Arctic battery cell factory in Mo i Rana
one of Norway’s largest general contractors and project developers
project management and construction of the 120,000-square-meter battery factory building
Freyr says the contract also includes facilities and infrastructure
This is not the first collaboration between the two companies: In December 2021
Hent was appointed as general contractor for the first phase in Mo i Rana
the construction of the so-called Customer Qualification Plant

Does Northern Norway's Nordland county really need three new airports
Plans are in place to build new airports with full-size runways in Bodø
this would mean four full-size airports serving a county of just 250,000 people
the group claimed building the airports will have "too great an impact" on the environment and the climate: "A society that is planning more and more trips will have major problems in achieving the climate goals we need."
Plans are in place to relocate the existing Bodø airport by half a mile to make room for a new city district
at a total cost of NOK 5.7 billion ($671 million)
It will be one of the biggest ever urban redevelopment projects in Norway
The picturesque Lofoten islands is served by two small short-runway airports that can only handle propeller planes
most air travelers to Lofoten must change planes at Bodø
At a cost of NOK 2.5 billion ($294 million)
a new airport at Leknes will replace the smaller airports and allow more direct flights from Oslo
Friends of the Earth are most concerned with the projects at Rana and Leknes
where a lot of topsoil must be removed during the construction
the boggy land on which the airport will be built could be a big natural store of CO2
a local Friends of the Earth representative claimed there has been "no analysis at all" on how much CO2 would be released as a result of the airport construction
A spokesperson for the airport development company said the bogs would be "reused" to cover areas around the airport
adding that the project would lead to massive centralization in a region that has recently suffered from population drain

The core activities of Leonhard Nilsen and Sønner include road and tunnel construction and mass removal
The company is also involved in mining as an operating contractor for several mining companies in Norway
The Northern Norwegian contractor company Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner (LNS) reached the NOK three billion mark in turnover for the first time in 2023
the company has made up the losses for the LNS-owned ruby mine in Greenland
Les på norsk.
The contractor group Leonhard Nilsen og Sønner (LNS) had a turnover of NOK 3,1 billion in 2023
This is an increase from 2,7 billion the year before and a new record for the company
even though it hasn't been a target in itself to reach NOK 3 billion," says CEO Frode Nilsen to High North News
LNS is Northern Norway's largest contractor and has built several of the country's longest tunnels
It is also the operation contractor for mining companies
LNS is also the majority owner of Greenland Ruby
which engaged in ruby extraction in Greenland until the end of 2022
it was revealed that the board of Greenland Ruby has applied for a reconstruction of the company in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy
Greenland Ruby has not succeeded in obtaining sufficient income to manage its debt
the ruby mine in Greenland's economic situation is largely affecting last year's results.
"We have managed all the losses in Greenland
But we have settled everything and are left with a solid equity capital
we go full speed ahead," elaborates Nilsen
The group ended up with a minor deficit in 2023 and the annual profit was NOK 29 million in the red
What was particularly good about last year
"We have had positive contributions to several of our projects
our contractor company has made the largest contributions."
Nilsen highlights the success of road projects
been operating two road projects over the past years: the building of the new E6 highway past Trofors in Helgeland and the new E6 over the Kvænang mountain in Northern Troms
LNS' headquarters are located in Risøyhamn in Andøya municipality in Northern Norway
we opened the tunnel here nine months ahead of schedule
The entire project was officially opened Wednesday last week
but there has been traffic there before the summer
but we have solved them well and are on schedule."
the CEO highlighted that the company was affected by both delivery issues due to the war in Ukraine and higher prices on input factors
"What one could have delivered almost overnight can now take several months
This particularly applies to machines and various equipment that is hard to get," said Nilsen
There have also been some price increases in the past years
but it is not increasing as much as it did," he concludes
Norwegian lithium-ion gigafactory startup FREYR Battery has signed a binding agreement with renewable energy group Statkraft covering 2024-31 for its first two gigafactories
The two companies have signed a binding Heads of Terms which will be finalised as a long-term physical supply agreement of power for FREYR’s first facilities
The deal will secure the supply from Mo I Rana’s central grid to FREYR’s Customer Qualification Plant and Gigafactories 1 and 2
The combined gigafactory will have an annual production capacity of 13GWh and the company has indicated a strong focus on the energy storage sector in the last 18 months
Statkraft will commit to a 23MW baseload with an accumulated 1.3TWh delivery over the contract as well as guarantees of origin to ensure the power is sourced from its hydropower assets
specifically the 500MW Rana hydropower plant
The company is owned by the Norwegian state and is responsible for the majority of Norway’s hydropower assets
which provide the vast majority of the country’s electricity needs
said: “Our ambition is to produce clean battery cells
and a key element of our strategy is to power our operations with renewable energy
This agreement with Statkraft ensures that our production facilities in Mo i Rana will have a steady
long-term supply of hydropower from local sources – keeping our carbon footprint to a minimum as we speed forward to full operations.”
In the last few months, the company announced offtake agreements totaling 53.5GWh (over multiple years) with several energy storage incumbents. Those built on existing announcements worth a total of 50GWh with Honeywell and an unnamed partner that FREYR will work with to launch a system integrator play
It signed an ‘initial agreement’ with Siemens Energy supplying batteries for energy storage applications in 2020
but its first gigafactory launch date has been pushed by at least two years since then so the outcome of that deal is not clear
