Nigerian teenage sensation Daniel Daga made another compelling statement in his European football journey as he delivered a composed and impactful performance for Molde FK in their 2-1 victory over Haugesund in the Norwegian Eliteserien

Saturday’s league match against Haugesund marked a new milestone
His calm presence and quick adaptation to the tempo of Norwegian football underline why Molde were so eager to bring him on board

Forty years ago Michael Tucker enjoyed a varied bill in Norway
First published in Jazz Journal October 1984
Superlatives are notorious in jazz criticism
but Molde really is a very special event in the jazz calendar
What musicians and fans alike appreciate about Molde is that it has always stayed faithful to the central jazz values: a personal
human touch and a fruitful give-and-take between structure and improvisation
white nights and the sublime setting of Norway’s fjord-river west coast add much to the experience
related art exhibitions and theatre and poetry sessions
More central to the magic however is the fact that no matter how large the venue (and most are of club or small cinema size) the organisers always manage to provide the sort of relaxed
intimate atmosphere which best serves the music
The emotional range ran from the blistering hard-bop of Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson in the Festival All Stars Quintet to the cultured elegance of the Stephane Grappelli Trio
The intriguing Vocal Summit quintet served further
polyphonic notice of the current state of the jazz vocal
with Ursula Dudziak’s coolly outrageous scatting particularly impressive on Bob Stoloff’s lazily grooved Oh Yeah
And yet more vocal invention played a large part in the appeal of the hugely popular Afro-orientated Norwegian quintet Tamma
who had Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell as their guests
To make the week a trumpet fancier’s dream
Miles Davis wound up his European tour with a 1am
heavily blues-based drama which deserved all the headline treatment it received
Bob Berg is the strongest saxophonist Miles has had since Wayne Shorter
but it was John Scofield’s subtly etched guitar lines which most consistently matched Davis’s truly inspired playing
whether on tough funk and blues items or the tender recasting of Cyndi Lauper’s pop tune Time After Time
where Davis’s extended solo attained the ultimate in bitter-sweet
Scofield’s dynamic range made a welcome contrast to the relentless harmolodics of guitarist James Blood Ulmer
featured for two nights with violinist Charles Burnham
electric bassist Amin Ali and drummer Warren Benbow
slightly menacing stage presence in the best tradition of the old blues masters but unfortunately no voice to match
looping phrasing had plenty of variety and a strong hoe-down flavour to it
but regrettably the rhythm section mostly chose to eschew the sort of mellow power so magnificently manifested by Ray Bryant
Eddie Jones and Gus Johnson in the Texas Tenors quintet
Molde has always struck a good balance between international and home grown talent
where Audun Kleive’s Sunny Murray-inspired drumming impressed as much as the leader’s strong soloing on tenor and soprano
the Masqualero quintet and Per Husby’s Dedication Orchestra with Karin Krog were the outstanding exemplars of current Scandinavian activity
Next year sees Molde’s 25th anniversary
If the bill is half as rewarding as this year’s

Sixteen-year-old Michael Noonan struck a memorable winner on his debut for Shamrock Rovers as the Irish side beat Molde in the first leg of their Conference League play-off.
Noonan, aged 16 years and 197 days, became the youngest goalscorer in the competition's history when he converted Dylan Watts' cross just before the hour mark.
He is also thought to be the second youngest-ever goalscorer in Uefa main club competition, behind only former Aston Villa midfielder Nii Lamptey, who scored for Anderlecht in the Uefa Cup at the age of 16 years and 100 days.
Norwegian side Molde were already down to 10 men when Noonan scored, with the teenager also involved when Valdemar Lund was shown a straight red card for a challenge on him in the first half.
Noonan, previously linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester City, only joined Rovers from St Patrick's Athletic last month.
He claims the record for the Conference League's youngest-ever goalscorer from Hearts player James Wilson, who scored against Moldovan side Petrocub, aged 17 years and 288 days old in December.
Shamrock Rovers are the first League of Ireland club to reach the knockout stages of a major European competition and will now be looking to seal a place in the last 16 when they host Molde in the second leg next Thursday.
The winners of the tie will play either Cercle Brugge or Legia Warsaw in the next round.
The Irish side have not even started their domestic season yet, with the opening game of their League of Ireland campaign on Sunday against Bohemians set to take place in front of a 30,000-plus crowd at Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
On the same night as Noonan's history-making goal, Ajax midfielder Jorthy Mokio became just the third 16-year-old to score in the Europa League with a fantastic volley from outside the box in their 2-0 win at Union Saint-Gilloise.
Antony scores on European debut for Real Betis
Noonan, an under-17 Republic of Ireland international, only made his league debut for St Patrick's Athletic against Bohemians last October.
According to the Shamrock Rovers website, Noonan "became the Saints' youngest ever starter, aged 15 years and nine months, and had a trial with Manchester City".
Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley was asked about Noonan's links to Manchester City when he signed for the club but said they were "irrelevant".
"You look at most players when there's talk of teams being after them, it's all irrelevant in the bigger picture," he said.
"When you get to know Michael, he's just focused on being better and improving."

Shamrock Rovers could not hold on to their 1-0 advantage from victory in Norway
Shamrock Rovers' European run came to an end at Tallaght Stadium as Molde prevailed 5-4 on penalties in the play-off round of the Uefa Conference League
was the only player to miss from the spot in the shootout after Molde had survived the entirety of extra time with 10-men following Isak Amundsen's red card
Magnus Wolff Eikrem scored the only goal of the game for the visitors to Dublin with the tie finishing 1-1 on aggregate
Rovers had carried a single-goal advantage into the second leg after 16-year-old Michael Noonan hit the winner in Norway last week.
Their lead was cancelled out in the 10th minute after a horrible mix up in the hosts' defence.
A hopeful delivery over the top was allowed to bounce and, after hesitation between Lee Grace and keeper Ed McGinty, the breaking ball fell for Wolff Eikrem who slotted into the empty net from the edge of the box.
Noonan looked to take advantage of similar confusion in the Molde ranks soon after but, although he beat Jacob Karlstrom to the loose ball, there was no Rovers team-mate on hand to turn his cross into the unoccupied goal.
Wolff Eikrem, the former Cardiff City attacker who spent his youth career at Manchester United, was the first-half's most influential player and his superb through ball set Fredrik Gulbrandsen through on goal but this time McGinty was alert and rushed out to make the save.
Molde were on top but were nearly undone on the counter when Graham Burke slid the ball through to Aaron McEneff, who beat the keeper but saw his effort cleared off the line by Martin Linnes.
Rovers wanted a penalty after Karlstrom followed through on McEneff but the VAR check did not go in their favour.
With the hosts settling into the game and Burke becoming more prominent, the former Republic of Ireland international got his side in behind again but his centred ball was inches beyond Noonan.
Image source, InphoImage caption, Shamrock Rovers claimed for a first-half penalty when Jordan McEneff was upended in the box
Playing with the strong wind at their backs in the second half, the Dubliners were slow out of the traps after the restart.
There was a quarter of an hour gone before they created their first real chance of the half when McEneff's floated ball found Burke at the back post but his dipping effort was deflected behind for a corner.
From the hour mark onwards, however, Rovers were on top without forcing Karlstrom into many meaningful saves. Burke did see the Norwegian keeper palm one effort away, but extra time long felt the most likely outcome.
Molde would play the additional 30 minutes with 10 men after Amundsen was shown a second yellow in injury time for a cynical foul on McEneff.
Extra time would follow the same pattern as the latter stages of the second half with the hosts enjoying plenty of possession without creating clear openings.
Indeed, it was Molde substitute Daniel Daga who on a rare break forward for the 10 men came closest to finding a winner before penalties.
In the shootout, Karlstrom got down to his left to save Greene's tame effort and Ed McGinty could not get close to an exemplary set of Molde spot-kicks.
The last-16 draw, which takes place on Friday, will decide whether the Norwegian side face Legia Warsaw or Cercle Brugge next month.

It is possible that Bradley’s understrength squad – certainly in comparison to last year – will run out of European road before the League of Ireland begins against Bohemians at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday and the Conference League’s second-leg goes to Tallaght next Thursday.
But to doubt Rovers after last year’s results, particularly against Cypriot and Austrian opposition, might prove unwise, even if the loss of Johnny Kenny, Neil Farrugia and Darragh Burns raises legitimate concerns about their attack.
To soften the impact of Farrugia going to Barnsley and Burns signing for Grimsby Town, Danny Grant was lured from Bohemians on a multiyear contract.
Finding Kenny’s replacement has proved even more challenging. The 21-year-old scored 20 goals in 2024 before Celtic recalled him in December and while Thursday night is probably too soon for Michael Noonan, Rovers’ 16-year-old winter signing from St Patrick’s Athletic, who has been registered for Europe.
“I think it’s important that the team keeps evolving, changing, and stays fresh,” said Bradley, who remains in the market for a centre forward with reported interest in Derry City’s Pat Hoban and Jonathan Afolabi.
Resources are not an issue. So far, the Hoops have accumulated €6.4 million in prize money from the 2024/25 European run, with another €800,000 guaranteed if they overcome Molde. The plan is to enhance facilities at Roadstone, where their academy’s 220 players come of age, but some of those earnings might be invested in a finisher.
As Rory Gaffney is still injured, 35-year-old Aaron Greene will presumably lead the line at the picturesque Aker stadium. In midfield, Dylan Watts and Danny Mandroiu remain the key figures while Ed McGinty, the former Ireland under-21 international, has arrived from Sligo Rovers to potentially unseat German goalkeeper Leon Pöhls.
St Pat’s preseason friendly with Molde in Malaga earlier this month encouraged the Norwegian’s manager Per-Mathias Høgmo to use the Stephen Kenny system as preparation for Bradley’s different Rovers formation.
Like the League of Ireland, Norway’s Eliteserien runs from March to November so Molde will be equally rusty following a disappointing 2024 when they fell short of European qualification.
However, in 2022, the early club of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erling Haaland proved too strong for Rovers in the Conference group stages, winning 3-0 at home and 2-0 in Tallaght, although both results were partially down to Bradley resting key players as he chased a third successive league title.
Three years later, it remains to be seen if Rovers can compete on both the home and European fronts.
“This off-season was another challenge, in that we didn’t have a lot of friendly games, as we’d just been back, and we’d played over 50 games last season,” said Bradley. “So, we made the decision to take preseason down in terms of games. You have to be mindful that we’re not going to be as sharp as what we’d like to be early on, but we’ve to look at the overall picture for the season.
“As a group, as a collective, Molde are strong. They are well-organised and well-drilled. They have dynamic players in the final third, you can see that. They understand their game and everyone’s game as a collective very well, so they’re a strong team but so are we. It has the makings to be a really good game.”

The concept of Irish people being eliminated in the early rounds of prestigious European competitions by Norwegians is one with which League of Ireland fans are wearily familiar. The most bothersome tormentor is Molde, who have recently played Irish teams in all three major European club competitions and enjoy a perfect record against them.
In 2013 Sligo Rovers made their Champions League debut against a Molde side then managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in front of a full house at the Showgrounds, with the Norwegians winning 1-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.
Unfortunately, when Molde returned to Ireland in 2020 they played before an empty house at Tallaght Stadium, beating Dundalk 2-1 in the Europa League group stage before winning the second leg 3-1.
Of greatest relevance is Molde’s most recent visit to Tallaght, in 2022, when they defeated Shamrock Rovers 2-0 in the Uefa Conference League, having already beaten the Hoops 3-0 at home.
To blemish Molde’s record we have to broaden our scope and look beyond senior matches. In September 2017, the FAI under-19 League champions UCD were paired with Molde in the Uefa Youth League. At the Belfield Bowl Molde took a deserved lead but then, in perhaps the most astonishing minute of football ever witnessed on campus, UCD scored twice to win 2-1.
Molde went 2-0 up in the second leg before a goal by substitute Jack Ryan levelled the tie 3-3 on aggregate, leaving the fully professional Norwegians facing the humiliation of being eliminated from Europe by a bunch of amateur Irish students.
But Molde had one trump card still to play. For obvious reasons the Uefa Youth League rule book strictly prohibits a club from fielding an older player but remains silent on using a younger one. And so after an hour the Norwegians introduced a 17-year-old prodigy who had broken into the Molde first team at 16, having made his senior debut for his home club Bryne at just 15.
The subject of this sudden tactical demotion was Erling Haaland, who capped his only ever appearance in the Uefa Youth League by scoring a penalty in a shoot-out that Molde won 5-4.
Hoops boss Stephen Bradley does have experience of eliminating a Norwegian side from Europe as he was manager in 2019 when Rovers defeated SK Brann 4-3 on aggregate in the Europa League. Included in that SK Brann side was Norwegian international striker Veton Berisha, who now plays for Molde, having joined in 2023 for a club record fee of €3 million.
Molde have been crowned Norwegian champions five times but have not won the Eliteserien since 2022, finishing fifth in the last two seasons. Erling Moe’s six-year spell as manager ended in December when he was sacked following a defeat on penalties to Fredrikstad in the Norwegian Cup final, a result that means that there will be no European football next season unless they actually win the Conference League.
Molde are incredibly lucky to still be in Europe this season. They began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Larne in the historic first group-stage match ever played by an Irish League side but only scraped into the knockout rounds thanks to an injury time winner that secured a 4-3 win over FK Mladá Boleslav. That enabled them to finish 23rd in a group stage from which 24 teams progressed.
Rovers finished 10th, only missing out on qualifying automatically for the round of 16 on goal difference. They are the seeded team for the Molde tie, giving them home advantage for the second leg.
Following Moe’s dismissal, Solskjaer turned down a third spell as Molde boss just months after being linked with the position of Republic of Ireland manager. Molde’s new manager is Per-Mathias Hogmo, who nearly became manager of Hearts in October. Hogmo is the first person to have managed both the men’s and women’s squads of a single country at international level, leading the Norwegian women’s team to Olympic gold in 2000.
One familiar face in the Molde squad is Ireland under-21 international goalkeeper Sean McDermott.
Key to the Molde business model is developing and quickly selling emerging talents, illustrated in January when they sold left back Mathias Lovik to Parma for €6 million, with Anders Hagelskjaer joining Wycombe Wanderers for a club record €500,000.
Weeks after David Datro Fofana opened the scoring for Molde against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght in 2022 the Ivorian forward moved to Chelsea for €13 million, having joined the Norwegian club on a free transfer less than two years earlier. And Haaland was still just 18 when he moved to Red Bull Salzburg in 2019 for €7 million.
Molde’s most successful export remains Solskjaer, who moved to Manchester United for £1.5 million in 1996. The undoubted highlight of Solskjaer’s decade-long career at Old Trafford was coming on as a late substitute to score an injury-time winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final to complete a historic treble.
The Old Trafford link continues into the present squad with captain Magnus Wolff Eikrem, who signed for Manchester United at 16 but never broke into the first team. The next big sale by Molde is likely to be midfielder Daniel Daga, who only joined last month having just turned 18. When 16, Daga was outstanding at the Under-20 World Cup in 2023, helping Nigeria reach the quarter finals where they lost to South Korea.
A crucial part of Molde’s preparations for this tie was a friendly in Spain earlier this month against St Patrick’s Athletic that Stephen Kenny’s side won 2-1. In light of this, Rovers fans will be hoping that victories by League of Ireland sides over Molde really are like Dublin buses in that you wait forever for one and then two come along together.

The SLO Spotlight series returns for its first edition of 2025 with Norwegian club Molde FK SLO Svein Erik Jenset the first to feature
With the next rounds of UEFA’s club competitions recommencing
we’re speaking to a supporter liaison officer from a club in the mix of the knockout phases.
Molde FK are competing in this season’s UEFA Conference League and have faced clubs from seven different nations so far with several away matches
European away matches can provide ‘new challenges’.
and what made you want to take on the role?
not really knowing what I was getting myself into
having been a supporter for well over 20 years—both in the stands and as chair of the supporters’ club—it didn’t take much convincing when a long-time friend asked if I’d be interested
And I suppose he knew who to ask because my enthusiasm for the role has only grown over the years!”
Molde FK has qualified for the UEFA Conference League knockout stages
How has your experience working at these matches differed from regular domestic fixtures?
But challenges exist to be overcome and finding the right balance to ensure a great matchday experience for everyone is a big part of the SLO’s job.”
How have you found the experience of working at European away matches?
A lot depends on how well the SLO role is recognised in the country we’re visiting
We’ve been fortunate to be ‘frequent fliers’ in Europe over the past decade
so I’ve seen both great examples (special mention to my Swedish and German colleagues!) and some less impressive ones.”
How well are you known by the staff at Molde FK and the club’s fans?
but I’m not entirely sure they understand what I do or how they can make full use of my role
so I’m hopeful we’ll continue developing the role into something truly valuable
I’d say all the most active supporters know me
I also feel they really appreciate the role and what it has done to improve their cooperation with
I worked as a volunteer with my travel expenses covered
after our fans reached out to the club’s CEO last year
I was offered a contract that took effect on 1 January
I receive compensation for lost income along with an agreed-upon annual bonus.”
How well do you know the other SLOs in Norway
While there have been some changes over the past few seasons
there are many experienced SLOs alongside a steady stream of newcomers eager to push the role—and their clubs—to new heights
We stay in touch regularly and try to meet as a group once or twice per season.”
What advice would you give to those new to the SLO role?
think not only of your own fans but also of visiting supporters
If you can enhance their matchday experience when they visit your club
chances are you’ll be met with the same courtesy when you travel
The better you know the people you’ll be working with
dedicate the necessary time to perform your role properly
it’s not something that can be done successfully without research
and a willingness to share knowledge with those you support.”
You took part in the UEFA Academy SLO training
‘What have I gotten myself into?’ It was overwhelming
especially as I had practically no handover from the previous SLO and the club wasn’t particularly accustomed to having an active one
after pushing through that initial uncertainty
I realise it instilled in me a strong belief system—one I’ve unconsciously relied on time and again.”
You also attended the trilateral (UEFA/FSE/ECA) SLO meeting in Nyon that focused on UCC
“I’d say it further opened my eyes to the channels available to us as SLOs and how we can apply pressure to drive change from multiple angles
It also gave me insight into how the role operates in other clubs and countries
allowing me to learn from both their successes and their challenges
it was great to meet colleagues face-to-face—some for the first time
and others I’ve gotten to know quite well over the years.”
How has that affected your work as an SLO?
“It would certainly be easier without the added tension—that goes without saying
It’s not always easy to set aside personal feelings and advocate for one side or the other
you feel like you’re the last person to be informed about something
I’m not saying that including me in every meeting or having me review all communications beforehand would solve everything
but I’d like to think that maybe—just maybe—I could serve as a bridge between two cultures
playing a small role in preventing misunderstandings.”
FSE would like to sincerely thank Svein Erik and Molde FK for taking part in the interview
