These optimal conditions were found mostly along the pad’s edges, which were still hydrologically connected to the surrounding natural peatland interior zones of the pad experienced rapid drying during the late season This dryness occurred because those sections lacked direct groundwater input and had poor water retention due to the coarse sandy substrate Mosses in these interior zones faced significant risks of desiccation The team concluded that the restoration method works best when a steady flow of water can reach the transplanted mosses. Otherwise, even with added mulch, the mosses struggled to maintain the hydration needed for photosynthesis and growth The first season had near-average rainfall reflecting potential future climate scenarios seven plots on the pad maintained near-surface water tables and showed high potential for moss establishment only one plot – located at the hydrologically favorable northeast corner – retained adequate moisture Drying trends in interior plots suggested that the partial removal technique alone may not suffice under climate stress Mosses planted in these areas often encountered moisture conditions below their survival threshold This highlights the need to improve subsurface hydrological connectivity across the pad perhaps by altering slope design or installing water flow conduits “Preserving peatlands is critical because of the role they play storing and supplying water in the landscape,” said Dr a professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at Waterloo “They are also our best choice for nature-based climate change solutions because of the vast amounts of carbon that they store.” The risk of moss desiccation became particularly clear in the pad’s interior zones Researchers measured soil moisture and water potential across different microtopographic levels They found that when the water table dropped below 54 cm mosses – especially those on high ground – entered the desiccation danger zone Mulching helped slightly in low areas but had limited effect overall The straw was often blown off high points by wind reducing its ability to shield mosses from evaporation These findings suggest that water table depth has a stronger impact than surface treatments in controlling moss health and extended dry periods can stunt long-term recovery This makes mosses in interior pad zones especially vulnerable during drought years Species like Tomentypnum nitens and Aulacomnium palustre can survive across a wide range of moisture levels These species may establish even in dry interior areas the long-term success of a diverse peatland community depends on retaining wet microsites and providing favorable conditions across the landscape plots near the pad edges also saw some short-term saturation This may allow submergence-tolerant mosses to dominate Researchers noted that while prolonged flooding can reduce photosynthesis it is less damaging than complete desiccation These microtopographic differences might ultimately support greater moss diversity by allowing multiple species to thrive in different niches especially where water tables dropped sharply true mosses may not be the best candidates These zones could instead support sedges like Carex and Scirpus species, which tolerate fluctuating moisture better. Introducing these plants might kickstart organic matter buildup and improve soil water retention over time The idea is not to force every plot to become a moss-dominated peatland researchers are exploring mixed strategies tailored to local conditions sedges could help transform dry mineral soils into suitable environments for future moss colonization The study marks a turning point in how scientists approach restoration on former drilling sites While the partial removal method shows promise it works best when combined with other interventions or installing water flow conduits may improve moss survival rates in drier regions The researchers will continue studying how moss communities develop over time and whether introduced species can become self-sustaining There’s also a need to refine water availability thresholds for different moss types to better guide future efforts This work reflects a growing understanding that restoration is not just about replanting vegetation It’s about re-establishing the physical and hydrological foundations that ecosystems need to thrive The full findings of this study are detailed in Hydrologic assessment of mineral substrate suitability for true moss initiation in a boreal peatland undergoing restoration, published in Ecological Engineering Like what you read? Per Over The Cap the move lowered his 2025 salary from $3.475 million to $1.7 million all but locking him into a spot on the 53-man roster Moss averaged 5.6 yards per carry through the first five weeks of the season and earned the starting role but Brown clearly showed he was the better fit for the offense down the stretch and the team drafted Tahj Brooks in the sixth round making what was a thin position group last year one that will be one of the more intriguing battles in training camp Perine’s contract doesn’t set the Bengals up to incur a lot of dead caps if he’s cut so he and Brooks will likely battle for the third running back spot on game days but the Bengals could keep all four backs on the 53-man roster The Bengals typically carry four running backs on the roster but only activate three for game days The reworked deal essentially guarantees Moss will not only make the team but likely see a significant workload behind Brown assuming he is able to bounce back from the injury Sea moss is rich in nutrients—but it can also contain dangerous levels of heavy metals and iodine Sold as dried flakes, gels, powders, gummies, and pills, sea moss has become a billion-dollar industry, valued at $2.18 billion in 2024, and the global market is expected to grow to $2.60 billion by 2030, according to Virtue Market Research a San Diego–based registered dietitian nutritionist So, are the health claims valid? “I’m not totally convinced of all of the touted health benefits, but I do see some potential theoretical health benefits,” says Nicholas Generales a board-certified family medicine physician in Los Angeles which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties (Is algae the new kale?) “It has the potential to play a role in gut health given that it is a good source of fiber,” says Generales Gaffen adds that unprocessed sea moss contains prebiotic fiber “Prebiotic fiber can nourish or feed the beneficial gut bacteria in our gut microbiome,” she says experts don’t recommend turning to sea moss specifically for fiber [such as] organic fresh vegetables at a much cheaper cost,” says Generales “The cost-benefit ratio is just not there.” but it plays a critical role,” says Gaffen and digestion and gut health with how quickly we process food.” However, according to experts, most people in the U.S. don’t need more iodine as they are already getting enough through their diet. Iodine is added to iodized salt and enriched bread and occurs naturally in seafood, eggs, and dairy. recommends iodine testing before adding more iodine to your diet If you’re getting 150 mcg of iodine in your diet and take sea moss “You can quickly become over-treated with iodine,” he says While there are some potential benefits to taking sea moss sea moss can absorb chemicals or metals from its environment faster than it can excrete or release them so whoever is eating it– us or other fish– [means] (Here’s why supplements may hurt your health more than help.) Sea moss can also be problematic for people with certain health conditions Even for generally healthy individuals, sea moss supplements raise questions. “Supplements do have the potential to interact with pharmaceuticals,” says Generales. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate supplements like pharmaceutical drugs “[Manufacturers’] can put almost anything they want on the label and it might not resemble exactly what you’re consuming,” he says (Here are 5 things you should know before trusting that supplement.) “The [sea moss] preparations that are available commercially are very variable,” says Davies “And very few of them seem to say how much iodine is in there.” He adds that people may not know sea moss contains iodine and can consume additional iodine without knowing “Supplements may have inconsistent iodine levels or added ingredients like artificial sweeteners or fillers,” says Gaffen Eat vegetables and fruits,” says Generales Gaffen adds that sea moss is not a ‘miracle superfood.’  (The secret to a healthy gut is simpler than you think.) “The lack of long-term studies and the rarity of iodine deficiency in the U.S. make it difficult to recommend sea moss as an essential dietary addition,” she says.  combining to form what promises to be the sixth largest CPA firm in the U.S Rumors of the impending merger began to leak out earlier this month The two firms plan to combine under the Baker Tilly name Moss Adams already has a large presence in the West Coast and the center of the country while Baker Tilly dominates in the East and Midwest and their merger will give them a larger national footprint.   Baker Tilly, based in Chicago, ranked No. 11 on Accounting Today's 2025 list of the Top 100 Firms with $1.8 billion in annual revenue over 600 partners and nearly 6,900 employees over 400 partners and more than 4,800 employees Baker Tilly CEO Jeff Ferro will be CEO of the combined firm until his retirement who is currently Moss Adams' chairman and CEO with Ferro remaining a director on Baker Tilly's board thereafter.  "Moss Adams is a great strategic fit with Baker Tilly," Ferro said in a statement Monday its people and its industry-focused approach we are expanding our ability to serve middle-market businesses with greater expertise geographic reach and go-to-market strength of the combined firm magnifies opportunities for our people to grow "We are proud to offer our clients these expanded resources to deliver even greater value and set a new standard for advisory services in the middle market."  private equity firm Hellman & Friedman will make an additional strategic investment in the business with existing shareholder Valeas Capital Partners also increasing its investment.  The deal is expected to close in early June of this year Moss Adams and Baker Tilly's considering their strategic options in a rapidly evolving sector."  Former AICPA president and CEO Barry Melancon recently joined as a strategic advisor to Baker Tilly and independent chair-elect of the Baker Tilly International board of directors: "The CPA and advisory profession requires firms to operate effectively at the local national and global levels," he said in a statement "This combination brings together two firms at the forefront of the profession further empowering them to deliver on their commitment to serving their clients as the needs of middle-market businesses evolve."  Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and Vedder Price PC served as legal advisors to Baker Tilly served as financial advisor and Dechert LLP as legal advisor to Moss Adams.  Moss Adams does not do measles testing in the parking lot of the Memorial Hospital Emergency Department in the Seminole Hospital District An outbreak of measles in West Texas and New Mexico has grown to over 250 cases and resulted in two deaths In the March 7 episode of Public Health On Call Moss spoke with Lindsay Smith Rogers about how the outbreak is growing and how the average person can know whether they’re at risk of contracting measles He also clarifies the role vitamin A can play in treating—but not preventing—measles and why it is not a replacement for vaccination What is the latest on the outbreak in the Southwest U.S. The state of Texas has been really good about updating its Health Services website with information about the outbreak Most of those cases—107 of them—are from Gaines County And the number of cases has been increasing [Editor’s note: The Texas Department of State Health Services updates its outbreak alert page every Tuesday and Friday the latest totals as of March 11 are: 223 cases (156 in Gaines County) which is tragic because it was a very easily preventable death The child had no underlying conditions; it’s important for people to know that this was an otherwise healthy child In addition to the ongoing transmission from this outbreak there have been some imported cases into Texas—four reported cases have been associated with international travel Most of the cases in Texas are in school-age children between ages 5 and 17 who are either unvaccinated or have unknown vaccination status and a few are among children who received a single dose of the MMR vaccine What is known about this outbreak and the community where it’s occurring This outbreak started in a Mennonite community in West Texas where there are low vaccination rates Many of the children are homeschooled or attend smaller private schools This is not atypical for the larger outbreaks that we’ve seen in the United States in the recent past including a large outbreak of slightly more than 900 cases in an Orthodox Jewish community in New York there was a measles outbreak of 383 cases in an Amish community in Ohio These larger measles outbreaks tend to occur in close-knit communities with very low vaccination rates Are the outbreak in New Mexico and cases reported in other states related to the outbreak in Texas Yes, we are seeing measles cases being exported from West Texas to other counties within Texas, but also to other states. The state with the next-highest number of cases is New Mexico, on the border with Texas—as of March 7, the New Mexico Department of Health has reported 30 cases and one death There have also been cases of measles reported elsewhere in the U.S. as far from Texas as New Jersey and Kentucky But we aren’t seeing outbreaks in other states of the size that we’re seeing in West Texas in that community with low measles vaccination coverage The way we stop and prevent measles outbreaks is through measles vaccination We have a very highly effective measles vaccine—about 93%–95% of people are protected after just a single dose That percentage is even higher—97% or more—if they get their second dose as recommended Individuals who have had two doses of the measles vaccine don’t need to worry What are the challenges to stopping the outbreak it can be challenging to get the measles vaccine to children who live in remote rural areas or areas of conflict measles vaccines are readily available; the problem is on the demand side It’s a complex issue that requires addressing people’s concerns about the measles vaccine and having the right messengers to get the information to communities It requires talking to people and trying to address misunderstandings—and probably misinformation and disinformation—that they’re hearing it may be religious leaders who need to be the trusted messengers to provide information and address the concerns of the community Get our weekly newsletter to stay informed on important public health topics Is vitamin A effective in preventing or treating measles There's a long history of studies—including by former Bloomberg School dean Al Sommer—showing that vitamin A supplementation in communities with a high prevalence of undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency can prevent measles mortality and that giving vitamin A to children hospitalized with measles can reduce measles mortality there are some important caveats to the use of vitamin A for measles: While it can be given to children here in the U.S under the supervision of a health care provider—particularly children who are immunocompromised or have been hospitalized with measles—vitamin A is not a cure or prevention for measles There is also toxicity associated with vitamin A if an individual takes too much of it The bottom line: Vitamin A is an effective tool to try to reduce measles mortality particularly in high-burden settings outside of the U.S. but it's not a tool to prevent measles the way the measles vaccine is The real impact of vitamin A is in populations with a high prevalence of undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency which is generally not the case in the U.S Are steroids or antibiotics useful in treating measles Steroids are not a standard therapy for measles Measles can impair the immune system and lead to secondary bacterial infections like pneumonia—in fact steroids might only exacerbate such an infection There is a role for antibiotics in children who develop a secondary bacterial infection But it is not recommended that all children with measles be treated with antibiotics How concerned should people be if they’re not living in a community where an outbreak is occuring Individuals who have had two doses of the measles vaccine don’t need to worry—they can be very confident they are protected there's a slightly higher risk that you might get measles if you're exposed to the virus but you would likely experience milder illness The CDC recommends that people who are traveling internationally make sure they have received both recommended doses of measles vaccine If someone is traveling to a place in the U.S they need to weigh their risk of coming into contact with an individual with measles Some people may be more susceptible to severe measles including those whose immune systems are weakened due to chemotherapy or underlying diseases Should people get their measles antibody levels tested I don’t recommend people get their antibody levels tested because the results can be misleading Many of the tests are not sensitive enough to detect low antibody levels so individuals may be misclassified as being susceptible to measles If there is any doubt about a person’s measles vaccination history it’s very safe to get another dose of measles vaccine You don't need to follow that up with measuring antibody levels Would a mask help prevent transmission of measles Measles virus is transmitted through droplets and through aerosols a tight-fitting N95 mask should reduce the risk of coming into contact with measles virus I don’t recommend people get their antibody levels tested .. but we’re not seeing signs of this outbreak slowing down What happens next is a matter of whether the virus gets into other communities where there is low vaccine coverage we had one measles case in 2023 and one case in 2024 but because we have very high measles vaccine coverage here It’s not unexpected to see just one or two cases in communities with high vaccine coverage But if someone with measles goes to another community with a large proportion of unvaccinated individuals we can expect to see another large outbreak This interview was edited for length and clarity by Aliza Rosen Johns Hopkins University reportedly is close to a megamerger with Moss Adams to create a firm with $3 billion in annual revenue but acknowledged it's always searching for merger candidates.  "We can't comment on speculation or confidential discussions," said Baker Tilly spokesperson Nicole Berkeland in an email to Accounting Today "What we can say is that we've been transparent about our strategy to grow through strategic mergers We are continually exploring opportunities with respected firms that align with our vision and will strengthen our ability to serve the middle market."  "It's our policy not to comment on market speculation," said Moss Adams spokesperson Greg Kunkel who has previously advised both Baker Tilly and Moss Adams on strategy and M&A "Just when we thought nothing could get any bigger in CPA firm M&A than Forvis (formerly BKD and Dixon Hughes), and CBIZ (formerly CBIZ and Marcum) here comes Baker Tilly and Moss Adams (potentially) combining to create the sixth largest CPA firm in the country (only behind the Big Four and RSM)," Koltin said in an email Baker Tilly will become the largest non-Big Four CPA firm in the Western region and Moss Adams will become part of a Top 10 global network both firms will bring over their unique areas of industry specialization and service line expertise which should provide robust organic growth opportunities to the combined firm As a 44-year veteran and advisor to the accounting profession I daresay there has been more change and transformation in the accounting profession in the past four years than the 40 prior years combined!" Another merger expert also sees benefits in the combination "The primary reason for this reported merger is to expand both firms' scale and market position," said Brad Haller a senior partner in West Monroe's mergers and acquisitions practice "This move would significantly boost Moss Adams' scale and provide Baker Tilly with access to Moss Adams' extensive client base leapfrogging over Grant Thornton and others this merger would allow Moss Adams to tap into Baker Tilly's global networks enabling them to expand their wallet share with clients While there will be modest synergies in the long term as they combine redundant support services the immediate benefits of this merger would be substantial." Vikings safety Harrison Smith had a look that "there was something unfinished,” teammate Brian O'Neill said. And Smith wouldn’t come back for a 14th season "if he didn’t think there was a chance.” Reporting by Pritam Biswas and Arsheeya Bajwa in Bengaluru; Editing by Tasim Zahid Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab , opens new tab Browse an unrivalled portfolio of real-time and historical market data and insights from worldwide sources and experts. , opens new tabScreen for heightened risk individual and entities globally to help uncover hidden risks in business relationships and human networks. © 2025 Reuters. According to the website Spotrac.com, which tracks professional sports contracts, Moss signed a one-year deal worth $1.7 million with $375,000 guaranteed. He initially signed a two-year deal as a free agent last offseason and was scheduled to earn $3.475 million this season. The move saves the Bengals $1.7 million of salary cap space. Moss suffered a season-ending neck injury in practice prior to the the Nov. 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Bengals signed veteran free agent Samaje Perine in the offseason and have Chase Brown coming off a great second half of the season as the main back, and they also selected running back Tahj Brooks in the sixth round of the recently completed NFL Draft. Co-hosting the event were footwear powerhouse Tamara Mellon and her daughter Minty, who joined the Yorns in celebrating the brand’s buzzy debut. For those not versed in early-aughts fashion lore, Mellon is the former British Vogue editor who helped catapult Jimmy Choo from bespoke cobbler to global fashion phenomenon. Samantha, like Mellon before her, honed her eye at Vogue before launching Ophelia Eve in late 2024. “Beth has always worked in the industry—she’s had her own brand, Elisabeth Bell, for over 15 years,” Samantha said. “A lot of our family work together on different ventures, so it felt natural to team up. We wanted to combine our viewpoints.” Beth added: “It’s wonderful working with someone so young who’s also incredibly decisive and savvy.” Next up for the duo? Their first appearance at Couture—the high-jewelry showcase in Las Vegas—along with a slate of exciting collaborations. In just a few short months, Ophelia Eve has already earned fans in Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Maria Menounos, and Jessica Biel, and appeared in print on style icons like Selma Blair and Tina Knowles. The future for the Yorns is undeniably golden—and sparkling bright. Brandon is the kind of artist who other artists want to be. I’ve said about him in the past that he has an ability to consider and assume the intellect of the viewer. It’s high art to me, and I’ve been a fan since 2009, so getting to show his 3D work felt really exciting to me. He’s an artist’s artist.  Oh, and Clover Duncan is getting an encore performance at Iconik Lena of their show called Soup.  I always kind of know what I like when I see it, and there are kind of two categories for working with me. I do open calls where I’ll send out a call in magazines or my website (curatesantafe.com) that says ‘if you want to apply, this is how.’ I’ve also been working with some of these artists for over a decade, so I’m repping them over time and getting to see their new bodies of work as they happen. And I’m lucky enough that they want to come back and work with me from time to time. It’s relationship building, because we’re all going to be in this community for the next 50 years, hopefully.  The other thing is that people write to me through my website appropriately and say they’d like to go through the process. Oh, also I happen upon work and am like, ‘Who is making this work? Can I show their work?’ Success is a really broad word. For me, I’m coming from...to be successful means to be contributing, so what’s most successful is about attention to caring and attention to celebrating. Wherever the beauty wants to be invoked, I’ll be there. I think I just have this surfer mentality, where you don’t stand on the beach waiting and crying if there’s no surf, you go three miles down to the swell. I’m just gonna keep looking for the swell. SFR Culture Editor Alex De Vore has written about the Santa Fe culture scene for over a decade and won awards for doing so. He's pretty tired of Americana and still hopes new punk bands might happen. JACE O’MARI MOSS was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to parents, Rodericka Ne’Cholle Moss and LaKenyon Lamont Russ, on October 31, 2013. Jace was a kind and gentle spirit who could light up any room with his smile. Jace loved his family and entertaining himself with video games. Jace would always express wanting to get older so he could graduate and work for the CIA (LOL). Jace was loved by so many; he leaves behind his beloved spirit and pure joy. He will be truly missed, my “sweet baby.” He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Jacquelyn Moss-Woods; great-grandmother, Odessa M. Russ; and great-grandfather, Earnest Moss.
