Be one of the first to try our new activity feed It’s still ski season at these four resorts There’s no month less predictable for skiers than May then a spring storm cancels your picnic in the park then next There’s only one thing to do when Mother Nature snows on your spring plans: Go skiing These four resorts have said “hell yeah!” to spring’s fickle moods and pushed back their closing days by a couple weeks so there will be limited or no lower-mountain beginner terrain on offer—always check the ski areas’ mountain reports before heading out but when late-spring storms bring the goods there’s literally nowhere else we’d rather be dropping higher than average snowfall and allowing the ski area to set a new resort record by staying open through the second week of May That brings Brian Head to 181 skiable days on the season The beginner Blackfoot chair will also be in operation is that bonus-weekend lift tickets are going for less than $25 a pop and include a $10 resort credit that can be used to treat yourself to lunch or apres The storms that continue to bring free refills to southern Colorado and New Mexico are also allowing Snowbowl to extend its season for the second time With two more bonus weekends now on the schedule the ski area will offer a total of 179 skiable days staying open through the third weekend in May and the Log Jam trail’s terrain park features will also be open Note that there will be no beginner terrain on tap Lift tickets will be on sale online starting at $19 with $10 of Bowl Bucks built in which you can use on food and drinks at the Agassiz Lodge Crystal enjoyed a snowy enough spring to keep the resort skiing through Memorial Day weekend While the last day of daily operations was April 20 weekend skiing will be on tap Fridays through Sundays through May 26 and with a current mid-mountain base depth of 10 feet There’s no beginner terrain open, but expect a couple dozen runs open off of the gondola and the Green Valley chairs. Check the resort’s mountain conditions report before heading out folks who want to continue to take advantage of the great spring conditions will have another glorious week to ski the handful of lifts that are still spinning The extension brings total on-snow days to 185 for the 2024-’25 skis season. Not too shabby. At press time, there were eight lifts and 104 runs still humming, but that will decrease as closing day approaches. Check the resort’s mountain report for the most up-to-date info. Bonus: Lift tickets are $99 a day for the rest of the season. Testing skis and winter gear is hard work (just ask our boot testers)—but someone's gotta do it. Travel·Posted 11 hours agoSubscribe to BuzzFeed Daily NewsletterCaret DownI Didn’t Know Skiing Was For Us Until I Went To Soft-Like SkiHere's the scoop on the ski trip that's been the talk of the Black British community I could think of nothing less appealing than partying in cold weather I would not be able to conceptualise the idea of 950 Black people attending a ski festival especially considering that Black skiers make up only 1.5% of the population in ski resorts according to the National Ski Areas Association What started as a small ski trip between friends in 2022 has evolved into a trip that has caused FOMO for those who missed out on tickets It was only a few lucky individuals who managed to get tickets Signifying the desire for the Black community to take over the Alps My trip started a day later than the rest of the attendees This is when the excitement started to sink in My journey to my hotel involved two trains and a bus I went to drop my luggage in my room and went to get my ski equipment A long day of travelling requires a hearty meal After having one of the best steaks I've had in my life SLS had an impressive line-up of DJs with popular names like RBC met new people and soaked in what the next few days would be like I had a few electrolytes on hand to give me some extra energy providing me with enough fuel to tackle the Alps I took one lesson at Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre so I could ease myself into the sport starting new hobbies is a reminder that I am not automatically good at something and it takes hours of practice to master a skill I found it much easier to learn how to ski in Zurich than I did in the UK It also felt affirming to be around other beginners who looked like me I’d describe the process of learning how to ski as an adult as a humiliation ritual You will fall several times and feel embarrassed every time you do it's also so much fun and it felt rewarding to learn a new skill as an adult I went back to my hotel to get ready for Apres Ski At The Top but Apres Ski At The Top took partying to a whole new level To say that experience was one of the best parties I’ve been to in my life and even Fuji music on a mountain in Zurich with Black people is a feeling that can never be replaced Not only are surrounded by the picturesque views overseeing the beauty of the mountains It felt a bit easier waking up on Wednesday; my body had adjusted to the lack of sleep and intense levels of alcohol in my body I somehow managed to wake up for my ski lesson (once again This was was the first day that I felt like a real skier I even found myself helping other people learn how to ski as well My ski lesson was followed by lunch and a well-needed shower before getting ready for another day of Apres Ski being at Soft Life Ski is a memory that will stay with me forever It allowed Black people to have access to an experience that before I had described skiing as a ‘White’ hobby – it didn’t feel like a space I would be accepted to enter We shouldn’t and don’t have to wait for spaces like Soft Life Ski to exist to go skiing but SLS bridges the gap for Black people like me who didn’t see themselves on the slopes One of my favourite attributes to this holiday was the feeling of safety from the hotel staff to the SLS wellness team and crew members I felt safe and assured that if I had an issue there were some complaints from attendees about the organisation of the trip Some attendees experienced late coach arrivals from the airport to Laax and issues with the gondolas returning from the first party this seems like a minor blip and to be expected when taking care 950 people in a ski resort Austria.Photo: Meindert van der Haven/Getty Images making them perfect places to ski during the warmer J-1 is for foreign nationals participating in educational and cultural exchange programs in the U.S employers to temporarily hire foreign workers to fill non-agricultural jobs typically deemed to be seasonal or intermittent in nature J-1 Visas have more than doubled in the U.S. The number of H-2B Visas has grown nearly 600 percent over the same time period participants in the programs are estimated to contribute $800 million to the U.S The J1 Visa program aligns with the Trump Administration's goals as it "enables foreign students to improve English skills." citizenship — these are NOT immigration programs these visas are temporary work visa authorizations," the presentation states said his team is "paying close attention" to the two visa programs as they are operating to the private resort's operating model there is little reason to think that the J1 Student visa program would be impacted this 2025-26 season," he said in an email response it's a congressionally approved program that is already in the budget it's defined as an educational and cultural opportunity — all J1 Visa holders are by definition active students on break (in the ski industry case they're generally from southern hemisphere countries where their summer college break is our winter) Their participation is managed through agencies and they are required to return home at the end of their visa stay." Benneyan called timing "a crucial factor." J-1 applications open as early as March at the Hermitage but finalization does not occur until October "Many ski areas are reliant on seasonal visa workers because their locations (like ours) don't support an ample at-the-ready seasonal workforce in place and while we've got employees that may commute well over an hour you can imagine the barriers that location can create when trying to recruit," he said "The other challenge of course is affordable housing in resort areas." One of the advantages at the Hermitage is seasonal housing the club has secured for season-long employees and is available at a reasonable rate "This can give us a leg up in our local and regional recruiting which is active now for next winter already .. "We stay very close to regular updates from our national industry trade group and the service providers that facilitate the process of applications and management of the J-1 recruiting process Generally and collectively the opinion is that the program is recognized as important to the US hospitality industry and is not a doorway to unintended extended stays in-country and for these reasons should remain in place as it is today." He snapped back "Sounds like you need to ski here more kid YOU must be confused."The man wasn't uttering nonsense like Nealon's character The attempted gaslighting and refusal to be incorrect was *chef's kiss* perfect. He was the epitome of an old-head-turned-sour You gotta love 'em.Nealon hasn't produced any new ski-related bits in a while I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a revival of the 'Scary Ski Lift' character on SNL the Norwegian biathlon star Sturla Holm Lægreid is making a significant change ahead of the 2026 Olympic season Sturla Holm Lægreid is making one of the most important decisions of his biathlon career: Switching his ski brand ahead of the 2026 Olympics Also Read: The Norwegian Biathlon National Team for 2025/2026 According to information obtained by Langrenn.com the 27-year-old from Norway is moving to Fischer Lægreid’s departure is a bittersweet one We’ve achieved a lot together,” says Lars M The Norwegian biathlon star leaves a proud legacy among the employees at the factory in Biri “Thank you for the unforgettable years with Madshus, from your first World Cup victory in 2020, to the World Championship gold the year after, and now as the world’s dominant biathlete and overall World Cup winner this year. That’s what people come here for,” says Raphael, the concierge at The Vale Rusutsu the ski-in/ski-out aparthotel I’m staying at in central Hokkaido He’s helping me print out my lift pass from the kiosk in the lobby while giving me a lay of the land I’ve skied Hokkaido before (in Niseko many years ago) an all-season outdoors destination that features three mountains day one at a new-to-me resort often fills me with jitters and his suggestion to head into the trees does nothing to calm me down I first learned how to ski when I was 29 alongside Swiss toddlers in Verbier I couldn’t tell you if I was more concerned about not wanting to hurt myself or not mowing down those children because I couldn’t get into the pizza position fast enough Now that I’m 40 years old with dozens of ski trips under my belt I’m still concerned about colliding with just about anything not just aspiring Swiss Olympians; this leads to skiing defensively and filled with tension I’ve improved my skills enough to leave a trail (of anxiety) on snow-covered mountains all over the world I’m happy to tackle intermediate terrain (and the occasional entry-level expert trail) but I wouldn’t say that I look confident or graceful doing it More Japan Reads: The 6 Biggest Surprises About Skiing in Japan Because I sometimes lack the confidence (or the steady hand) to do hard things on the slopes I regularly rely on experts for reassurance I find myself on Mt Isola (one of Rusutsu’s mountains) taking deep breaths on the outskirts of a groomed trail My instructor has decided I’m ready to do a mild tree run Because he is more knowledgeable and more experienced I submit to the idea that he has my best interests in mind I do my best to contain the unease swelling in my heart and point my skis toward the pines All I need to do is slowly follow the trail that others have left behind My instructor suggests taking a buoyant stance that will allow me to almost glide on the powder but to be precise enough with my movements so as not to crash into the trees I suspect that I could have walked through those trees faster but my aching quads can attest to my triumph And I surprise myself when I tell my instructor I want to do it again Because it’s my fears that have limited my perception of my potential I always assumed that the breadth and depth of my skiing would never include things like trees or black diamonds Those parameters are only redefined when I do something I’ve never considered myself capable of doing I finished that same tree-dotted terrain three times Accomplishing new things isn’t just exhilarating I celebrate my expanding skill set by spending an hour in the on-property onsen Embracing Japanese ski culture is a lot easier when all you have to do is sit there Checking things off a list that doesn’t exist continues in Niseko, where I learn that night skiing is quite popular. I’m not with an instructor, so I’m once again consulting the hotel concierge for skiing advice. This time, it’s Niseko Kyo, another ski-in/ski-out property located seconds away from Hirafu’s Ace Family Quad Lift I have never gotten close to skiing that late when I can then succumb to as many glasses of rosé as is legally acceptable But in the spirit of adventure and self-improvement I accept an invitation to join Rhyle—an Australian expat and team member at Kyo—for a sunset ski tour of the mountain Rhyle says space is the best thing about night skiing As Niseko’s stock as an international ski destination continues to soar But the volume of people drops significantly at night And so does the number of available trails The inventory is even slimmer when you account for the runs I actually want to do I imagine that most people who hold a respectful fear of skiing are primarily worried about injury mixed with the overactive imagination that has led me to become a writer you could have found me slowly connecting my turns on a beginner run repeatedly muttering to myself to not shoot off the mountain I find myself obsessing over getting lost and having to navigate terrain that leads to a ravine So I tell myself I can side-slide in that ravine if necessary.) Rhyle proves to be an exceptional and encouraging night skiing companion based on his expert appraisal of my flailing around I can do all the runs we find ourselves on At this point of the day (during a warm week in Niseko) I’m overthinking every errant sound or surprise bump I’m skiing at night with less than favorable mountain conditions under my skis I could never have imagined doing this 10 years ago and for all the hee-hawing I do about how much skiing scares me my desire to improve in the sport is a greater force and Mount Yotei’s sleek silhouette guiding me down an unexpected combination of gratitude and pride grips me especially when I invariably lose a bit of balance a gang of snowboarders comes shooting from all directions and to give myself space and time to gather my senses and do what I always do when I get anxious while skiing: Sing myself to the finish line The Swedish Ski Association has named its A-national cross-country ski team for the 2025/2026 season According to a press release from the Swedish Ski Association the A-national cross-country ski team for the 2025/2026 season has now been selected and the goal is to sharpen the operations even further,” says Swedish national team manager Anders Byström The A team lineup for 2025/2026 includes eight women and seven men—an unchanged structure from last season Calle Halfvarsson and Johan Häggström are leaving the team who achieved his first World Cup podium this past winter including at the World Championship 50km race,” says Byström All eight women from last season’s squad return after an exceptional year that saw them dominate the World Cup and claim every woman’s gold medal at the World Championships They’ve all maintained an extremely high level and each of them won World Cup races this winter the Swedish women claimed all the gold medals at the World Championships in Trondheim—a true feat,” says Byström the Swedish Ski Association has introduced a new trio to support the women’s team Ida Ingemarsdotter and Johan Granath will join Stefan Thomson creating a flexible structure that ensures close support during both training camps and competitions Ingemarsdotter and Granath will continue their previous work with elite training in Östersund and Falun “The Svenska Spel’s Elite Environments are also key in our development of athletes outside the national teams These environments provide training facilities They are becoming increasingly important to maintain intensity in everyday training where the athletes spend most of their year,” says Byström The next phase for the national teams includes physical testing and training camps with gatherings scheduled in Riksgränsen and Torsby The A team will first meet at the Olympic Camp in Crete from May 10–17 where the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK) will present the first official spots for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina Also ReadNorwegian men’s national team for 2025/2026Norwegian women’s national team for the 2025/2026 season Are you interested in traditional cross-country skiing? Cold-weather testing is an important thing for EVs since battery-powered cars traditionally haven't done well when the temperatures drop While new chemistries and more advanced active thermal management systems have helped a lot anyone who's been doing the EV thing for a while will probably find themselves thinking twice before heading out for a long drive on a cold day I live not too far over the border in Upstate New York but everything just feels a little bit different a little bit nicer when you cross into the Green Mountains That's especially true in the winter months I try to make day trips to Southern VT as often as possible to spend the morning getting first tracks at the Mt It's roughly a 75-mile run that takes me 90 minutes if I don't catch too many school buses or snow plows along the way a fair bit of high-speed secondary roads and no shortage of winding mountain passes In other words, it's an excellent route for testing cars of all sorts, including our long-term 2024 BMW iX I'd hoped to bring the iX over for a day on the slopes earlier this winter, but as I noted in the last update, an unexpected failure to charge left me without enough juice to make it An update on that situation: Our iX is still occasionally falling back to time slot mode when we plug it in but a BMW representative contacted me after we published our last update I made doubly sure that the iX was not only plugged in but was actually charging I'm still experiencing some charging glitches with the iX That alone shows my confidence in the iX: I was heading on a lengthy drive in winter conditions, and I didn't feel the need to charge the thing fully I folded the right seat down and placed my snowboard on top then buckled the seatbelt across it to hold it in place It didn't move an inch for the duration of the drive despite the twists and turns along the way My route started with a bit of highway time I have a few pairs of sunglasses that the Driving Assistance Pro driver-monitoring camera doesn't like I wasn't wearing any of those that morning but the system was still having a hard time spotting my eyes through the glasses I figure it was the extra glare from the sunrise I was left either squinting with the assistance system on or driving hands-on the whole way That was the only minor glitch on the way over The iX was comfortable and quiet when I was stuck with morning commuters queueing up the hill in Troy The BMW's strong power and throttle response made quick passes on two-lane roads a breeze when things opened up I got there with plenty of time before the lifts started turning and with reasonable efficiency despite using climate control and having fun on the drive over That's despite an ambient temperature of less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit Those cold temps meant for some crisp conditions on the trails in the morning though some warmer weather the weeks before meant only a handful of trails were open at Mt I had a great morning on what was sadly only the second and final time I'd managed to get out there this season My travel schedule and adding a new puppy to the family has conspired to keep me away from the slopes I was parked right at the base of the trail which meant I could step out of my bindings and straight into a pleasantly warm cabin The back seat of the iX proved plenty roomy for me to get myself out of my boots and other gear without having to contort myself too much various thermal layers scattered around the rest of the interior I headed back down the mountain for the return trip home As I'd only used 35 percent of the battery on the way there and as the car was predicting 26 percent remaining when I got home I was even more unrestrained with the throttle The worst of the winter salt and sand had not fully washed off But the iX is nicely balanced for such a big thing and those Nokian Remedy WRG5 tires still deliver good grip in all conditions I took a slightly shorter route on the way back which shaved about five miles off the trip plus slightly warmer temperatures (up over 34 degrees) and more time spent going downhill meant just 32 percent consumption for the return The only slight disappointment was that the BMW's range prediction was way off It predicted 26 percent remaining when I returned home That's about the biggest range estimation miss I've noticed from iDrive's integrated nav which is saying something in and of itself A six-percent miss would be considered a win in most other cars if my EV is going to be off by six percent mostly in sub- or near-freezing temperatures There's still not much of a charging network in Vermont so it's time for more temperate excursions plus further explorations about how the iX is faring for puppy-hauling duty The Best EV Gwyneth Paltrow looked back at her 2023 ski crash trial calling the experience “ridiculous” and describing the case as “everything that’s wrong with our legal system.” Gwyneth Paltrow is reflecting on her 2023 ski crash trial Two years after winning a lawsuit filed by retired optometrist Terry Sanderson—who accused the Goop founder of causing a 2016 ski crash in which he sustained injuries—she did not mince words while recalling the legal saga “It was ridiculous,” she told Erin Foster and Sara Foster on the April 24 episode of the sisters’ World’s First Podcast the idea that someone could ski into your back and knock you down and then sue you—I was like ‘This is everything that’s wrong with our legal system.’” The Oscar winner, who denied any wrongdoing in the case filed her own countersuit against the eye doctor alleging that he was responsible for the collision and placed the blame on her “in an attempt to exploit her celebrity and wealth.” Looking back she said her conviction was the reason she didn’t back down “That’s why I felt like I had to fight it,” she said during the podcast In the end, Gwyneth, 52, emerged victorious as a jury found Sanderson to be 100 percent at fault for the incident and granted her symbolic request of $1 in damages. At the time, a source present during the verdict told E! News the Shakespeare in Love actress leaned down to Sanderson after the verdict was handed down and told him, “I wish you well.” News in a statement that she “felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised [her] integrity.” “I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury,” she said “and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.” Months after the trial concluded, Gwyneth was still shaken by the ordeal describing it as a “pretty intense experience.” “That whole thing was pretty weird,” she told the New York Times in September 2023 “I don't know that I've even processed it To see Gwyneth’s evolution through the years This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just Hood but a deep summer snowpack can be found just a couple of chairlift rides away Hood from nearby Trilium Lake is simply incredible I would have sat at this spot longer if didn't mean I would miss out on skiing I don't remember the moment that I first saw a video of summer skiing on Mt but I certainly haven't forgotten the feelings it elicited-- jealousy As a kid who suffered through long summers of sweltering temperatures and oppressive humidity on the east coast I simply couldn't get over the fact that fellow Americans were scratching their skiing itches all summer long while I was forced to go to the beach I finally made my pilgrimage to Timberline and Mt The purpose of my quick jaunt up to Hood from Tahoe was to shoot an upcoming sponsored video for 5-Hour Energy I can't wait to show you how we squeezed three sports in one day for my Summer Trifecta let's get back to what's most important- the skiing Timberline Lodge Conditions, July 24th, 2024I loved this view of the winding trail of snow leading back to Timberline Lodge That's Mount Jefferson standing tall in the background Note: Take this conditions report with a grain of salt (that will be funny later I promise) as it's nearly been a week since I skied Timberline but it should be a fair representation of how Palmer is holding up this summer Timberline July 2024 Layout As I learned through conversation the Palmer Glacier and its trails vary each season depending on the snow depth there are at least a dozen or so slalom and GS lanes set up for ski race campers Each lane was constantly being used by a few dozen kiddos and young adults honing in their skills.  Further to the right is a groomed freeskiing lane, about a hundred yards wide that's open to the public. Below the freeskiing lane are a smattering of terrain parks and halfpipe options Looking up towards Palmer from the Jeff Flood lift The terrain park features can be seen below and to the looker's right of the snowfield We spent most of our time skiing the far looker's right groomed lanes and the fun ungroomed paths to the looker's left of the Palmer Lift there are still a few off-piste/ungroomed routes for the public to explore beneath the Palmer Lift and to the looker's left of it but were loads of fun as they featured rocks Timberline July 2024 Snow QualityTimberline farms and preserves snow to build a base that will last throughout the summer it takes much more than a few clever snow preservation tactics to make the surface rideable in late July Each groomed run and terrain park is loaded with a layer of salt to make the surface harder and faster This is essential to prevent the sticky snow we're all familiar with in the spring I was blown away by how fast I was able to ski throughout the morning It felt like skiing on a firm yet forgiving spring groomer rather than a melting snowfield at the end of July The snow was certainly dirty in spots We skied from roughly 8AM to 12PM in temperatures ranging from 45 degrees to about 60 degrees Fahrenheit The surface started to slush up as the sun rose higher in the sky but I never felt unsafe or bothered by sticky snow Timberline July 2024 Overall Impression I alluded earlier that traveling to Timberline in July was high on my bucket list and while the starry-eyes of fulfilling a lifelong dream might sway my judgement I feel confident in agreeing with those that came before me Summer skiing at Timberline is a MUST for every skier but the experience instantly became a 'core memory' as the Gen Z'ers are saying these days Timberline is where skiing continues to live and breathe while the rest of the country rests My only gripe about the experience is that I had to go home after skiing just one day We'll be one day closer to the (normal) ski season tomorrow If you've been waiting years to make it happen like I did From ski resort news to profiles of the world’s best skiers Submit your best clips for a chance to be featured on POWDER.
