The legendary heavy metal band Riot has gone through many incarnations over the years
and the current lineup is known as Riot (V)
At the helm of the band is longtime bassist Don Van Stavern
who has been excited all this year for the band’s new album
which was recently released on Atomic Fire Records / Reigning Phoenix Music
the band members decided to change up the sound a bit from previous albums
They are not producing a sound that is pure metal anymore; instead
they offer a welcome combination of rock ‘n’ roll and power metal
harkening back to some of the earlier Riot records
“This is the 17th Riot record,” Van Stavern said in a recent Zoom interview
Joining the bass player in the band are Todd Michael Hall on vocals
Nick Lee on guitars and Frank Gilchriest on drums
They each have their own unique story on how they were welcomed into the Riot family
that journey began in the 1980s when he joined the New York City band during a momentous time period
His first release was the well-received and much-loved album Thundersteel
Flyntz’s time with the band also goes back to the 1980s
and together the five musicians carry on the legacy of original members Mark Reale
Guy Speranza and the many other players over the years
Riot (V) would have released a new album sooner than 2024 — the last one was 2018’s Armor of Light — but the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way of the band’s plans
Van Stavern said that when record shops were closed due to the infectious virus
fans couldn’t easily purchase physical vinyl copies
the band likes to tour when a new album releases
It’s that old strike-while-the-iron-is-hot adage
we like to put a record out and then go play and tour,” he said
but every country had different rules for the COVID thing
the band also moved over to Atomic Fire Records / Reigning Phoenix Music
so we thought it was a smart move to go with the people that were into Riot,” Van Stavern said
“Three producers later we found the right one.”
The quest to find the right producer was mainly because the band wanted to change up the sound a bit
Van Stavern and company were after a mix of rock and power metal
what the bass player called “old-school Riot.” They landed on Bruno Ravel
They knew him well because of his previous work with the members
“He did the Thundersteel comeback album
so the record label really wanted him,” the bass player said
and we got the sound and the songs we wanted
which features the songs “High Noon” and “Feel the Fire,” was meant to be released Feb
The band was building excitement for the big date
and they even released a lyric video for the first single
“High Noon.” But then the label decided to push the album a few months
while waiting for the songs to finally be released
let’s go ahead and get the other video out,” he said
We were going to do ‘Feel the Fire’ first to show a different side of Riot
we wanted to be a little more diverse showing the power metal and rock heritage from the early days
but the label was scared about releasing something real rock.”
That hesitation led to “High Noon” being the first single and the riskier “Feel the Fire” being the second song
A video or “Mean Streets” has now been released as well
Fans seem to be digging each of these tunes
“I think a lot of the fans like it,” Van Stavern said of the music video for “Feel the Fire.” “There’s been a couple of people looking at it a little bit strange
fans have the chance to enjoy new tunes from Riot (V) once again

Eastern Mennonite Seminary (EMS) graduates Carl and Becky Van Stavern have spent the last three years juggling seminary and eight churches
Carl had five United Methodist congregations and Becky had three
Becky also finished her undergraduate degree online from Bluefield State College during that time
They drove three hours to EMS from their home in Weston
The Van Staverns were among 21 students to receive master of divinity degrees from Eastern Mennonite Seminary Saturday afternoon, Apr. 30. Two students received master of arts in church leadership degrees, one received a master of arts in religion degree and three received certificates during the ceremony

The Van Staverns came to Eastern Mennonite Seminary because they knew seminary alumni Charles and Sharon Miller and Dallas Forren
All three are United Methodist pastors in West Virginia
“These people have true pastor’s hearts,” said Carl
“They focus on the needs of the people and the community in which they minister
They had a pastoral identity that was created out of the formation program here at EMS.”
“My classes here have helped me become a better listener,” said Becky
“We deal with a lot of low income people who can’t afford to see counselors
counseling classes and spiritual direction have helped me know how to listen and help these people fight their demons.”
“I have appreciated the biblical focus at EMS,” said Carl
“I learned to understand the context in which the scripture was written and the relationship of that context to today.”

“I will affirm on the basis of biblical precedent and on my own observations of life that a deep friendship between the ministering person and the Spirit is high on the list of success factors in ministry,” Brunk told the graduates
“There is no authentic spiritual experience that is not Spirit experience; there is no genuine spiritual ministry that is not ministry in the Spirit,” he continued

Noninvasive test may screen for disease before symptoms appear
by Jim Dryden•August 23
using technology that one day may make it possible to screen patients for Alzheimer's disease during an eye exam
the eye test was able to detect the presence of Alzheimer’s damage in older patients with no symptoms of the disease
It may be possible in the future to screen patients for Alzheimer’s disease using an eye exam
Using technology similar to what is found in many eye doctors’ offices
researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St
Louis have detected evidence suggesting Alzheimer’s in older patients who had no symptoms of the disease
“This technique has great potential to become a screening tool that helps decide who should undergo more expensive and invasive testing for Alzheimer’s disease prior to the appearance of clinical symptoms,” said the study’s first author, Bliss E. O’Bryhim, MD, PhD, a resident physician in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences
“Our hope is to use this technique to understand who is accumulating abnormal proteins in the brain that may lead them to develop Alzheimer’s.”
Significant brain damage from Alzheimer’s disease can occur years before any symptoms such as memory loss and cognitive decline appear
Scientists estimate that Alzheimer’s-related plaques can build up in the brain two decades before the onset of symptoms
so researchers have been looking for ways to detect the disease sooner
Physicians now use PET scans and lumbar punctures to help diagnose Alzheimer’s
researchers examining the eyes of people who had died from Alzheimer’s have reported that the eyes of such patients showed signs of thinning in the center of the retina and degradation of the optic nerve
the researchers used a noninvasive technique — called optical coherence tomography angiography — to examine the retinas in eyes of 30 study participants with an average age in the mid 70s
none of whom exhibited clinical symptoms of Alzheimer’s
Those participants were patients in The Memory and Aging Project at Washington University’s Knight Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center
About half of those in the study had elevated levels of the Alzheimer’s proteins amyloid or tau as revealed by PET scans or cerebrospinal fluid
suggesting that although they didn’t have symptoms
PET scans and cerebrospinal fluid analyses were normal
“In the patients with elevated levels of amyloid or tau, we detected significant thinning in the center of the retina,” said co-principal investigator Rajendra S. Apte, MD, PhD
Cibis Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
“All of us have a small area devoid of blood vessels in the center of our retinas that is responsible for our most precise vision
We found that this zone lacking blood vessels was significantly enlarged in people with preclinical Alzheimer’s disease.”
The eye test used in the study shines light into the eye
allowing a doctor to measure retinal thickness
as well as the thickness of fibers in the optic nerve
A form of that test often is available in ophthalmologist’s offices
the researchers added a new component to the more common test: angiography
which allows doctors to distinguish red blood cells from other tissue in the retina
“The angiography component allows us to look at blood-flow patterns,” said the other co-principal investigator, Gregory P. Van Stavern, MD
a professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences
“In the patients whose PET scans and cerebrospinal fluid showed preclinical Alzheimer’s
the area at the center of the retina without blood vessels was significantly larger
Added Apte: “The retina and central nervous system are so interconnected that changes in the brain could be reflected in cells in the retina.”
17 had abnormal PET scans and/or lumbar punctures
and all of them also had retinal thinning and significant areas without blood vessels in the centers of their retinas
The retinas appeared normal in the patients whose PET scans and lumbar punctures were within the typical range
More studies in patients are needed to replicate the findings
but he noted that if changes detected with this eye test can be used as markers for Alzheimer’s risk
it may be possible one day to screen people as young as their 40s or 50s to see whether they are at risk for the disease
“We know the pathology of Alzheimer’s disease starts to develop years before symptoms appear
but if we could use this eye test to notice when the pathology is beginning
it may be possible one day to start treatments sooner to delay further damage,” he said

BOERNE - An injured police officer returned to full duty Wednesday
less than three months after a suspected drunk driver nearly killed her
It was a reunion Boerne police officer Michele Van Stavern had been looking forward to since her release from the hospital the day after Labor Day
"I don't know how many people are super excited to get back to work
who for the past year has served as the school resource officer at Boerne Middle School North
the veteran officer was seriously hurt while directing traffic after a football game at Boerne High School
Police say she was wearing a safety vest and using a wand flashlight when a pickup truck driven by Andrew Harris
but it was too late to try to get out of the way," she said
"I was hit on my left side and I flew approximately 35 feet."
Police say Harris did stop at the scene and was arrested on a charge of intoxication assault
a third-degree felony that could put him in prison up to 10 years
Van Stavern was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio with a deep laceration to her left forearm
"It wasn't until later that I found out that I could have
"An inch one way or the other could have determined whether I walk or not."
"It is a miracle she is alive and walking today," the Boerne Police Department said in a Facebook post soon after the crash
The reason behind her absence from school was no secret among students
"All the kids knew about it," said Van Stavern
"News travels pretty fast here in Boerne
and it happened in such a busy place right after a football game."
"It was just very sad when we heard that she got hit," said student Luke Fox
We kept asking when she was going to come back."
"She was out for a long time," said student Carson Coffland
"She's a big part of the community
so I'm really glad that she's back."
Van Stavern found herself in good enough shape to return to desk duty at the police department
Now that her therapy hours have become more manageable
she’s able to return to full duty on campus
"There was a short time that I didn't know if that would be possible," she said
"The doctors would say I wasn't ready
‘It's been so long.' I was ready to get that behind me
I was just ready to be back in my role."
To say the students welcomed her back with open arms would be an understatement
"I expected to get lots of hugs from the staff and all my friends that I work with
but it was neat because of the kids," said Van Stavern
our kids are so great that they're happy to see their school resource officer
They wanted to check out my scars and injuries and ask a bunch of questions
it's crazy for someone to come back and look that well," said Coffland
"This was the goal that I had," said Van Stavern
who has three daughters attending school in the Boerne Independent School District

Washington University School of Medicine is participating in a trial looking at new treatment options for patients who have had a stroke with unknown time of onset
Washington University physicians at Barnes-Jewish Hospital treat 1,600 strokes annually
with four to 10 suspected stroke patients arriving each day
patients arriving with an unknown time of stroke onset may soon have more treatment options
When doctors can pinpoint the time symptoms of a stroke begin
they have up to 4 ½ hours from that point to give the patient the anti-clotting drug
But when a stroke occurs while someone is asleep—what’s known as a wake-up stroke—the patient has no idea when symptoms began
is not an option under current treatment guidelines
Washington University neurologist Andria Ford, MD, is working to change that. Ford is an investigator in MR-WITNESS, a phase II trial looking at safe administration of intravenous tPA in acute ischemic stroke patients who had unwitnessed onset of symptoms
This includes patients who had wake-up strokes
and also patients whose daytime strokes were not witnessed and who were unable to determine when their symptoms began
a patient must arrive at the emergency department within 4 ½ hours of waking or being found
the patient undergoes an MRI to determine when the stroke began
If MRI shows the stroke to be recent-onset (within the last 4 ½ hours)
Although MRI has been shown in clinical trials to accurately determine the time of stroke onset
no previous trials have demonstrated the safety of intravenous tPA in patients who had unwitnessed symptom onset and later underwent MRI
“Studies such as MR-WITNESS demonstrating the safety of tPA when MRI is used may be sufficient to allow a change in clinical care so that MRI can be used in this wake-up/unwitnessed onset stroke population,” Ford says
Washington University is one of six enrolling clinical sites for the trial and has enrolled more than 25 percent of the total subjects in the study
More than 50 patients have been enrolled so far across all six sites
and the trial is expected to conclude in 2016
None of the study participants enrolled at Washington University have experienced adverse outcomes
Because the trial is still enrolling patients
but Ford described the promising outcome of one study participant: The 38-year-old woman awoke one morning with right-side weakness and aphasia
Her stroke was considered moderate to severe
Her MRI revealed that her stroke was recent-onset
so she was given intravenous tPA within an hour of her arrival at the emergency department
indicating no significant disability due to her stroke,” Ford says
She emphasizes that the eventual results of the MR-WITNESS trial might make this type of outcome possible for many others
we admit patients to our stroke service who either awoke with or had unwitnessed onset of stroke symptoms and who are automatically deemed ineligible for IV tPA
These patients have virtually no acute treatment options,” Ford says
it may be possible to identify a subset of these patients in whom it is safe to administer IV tPA
For more information on the MR-WITNESS trial, please visit the trial site on ClinicalTrials.gov

A new study shows that the eyesight of patients with an unusual vision disorder linked to obesity improves twice as much if they take a glaucoma drug and lose a modest amount of weight than if they only lose weight
called idiopathic intracranial hypertension
affects an estimated 100,000 people in the United States
The researchers recently reported their results in The Journal of the American Medical Association
The condition’s most common symptoms are headaches and vision problems
double vision and temporary episodes of blindness
Five to 10 percent of women with the disorder experience disabling vision loss
“The condition results in elevated pressure in the fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord,” said co-author Gregory P. Van Stavern, MD, a neuro-ophthalmologist at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St
“We don’t completely understand the disorder but know it affects the optic nerve because when fluid pressure is elevated
the optic nerve is swollen when we examine the eye.”
Previous research has found that losing 5 to 10 percent of body weight can improve symptoms in many patients
is a diuretic given to glaucoma patients to reduce pressure in the eye
Many eye specialists also have prescribed the drug — given as a pill rather than eye drops — to reduce fluid production in and around the brain
The disorder also is called pseudotumor cerebri because its symptoms resemble those of a brain tumor
and it is becoming more common as the obesity epidemic grows
In developing countries where obesity is uncommon
very few cases of idiopathic intracranial hypertension exist
The study was conducted at 38 clinical sites in the United States and included 161 women and four men with the disorder and mild vision loss
At the time subjects enrolled in the study
their average body mass index (BMI) was about 40
A BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese
Participants were placed on an exercise plan and diet designed to lower salt intake and cut 500 to 1,000 calories each day
The goal was to get subjects to lose at least 6 percent of their body weight
all study subjects were provided with a weight-loss coach and low-cost exercise equipment
About half of the participants also randomly were chosen to receive acetazolamide
subjects received 1 gram of the drug per day
The dose then was increased by a quarter of a gram each week until study patients reached their maximum tolerated dose or were taking up to 4 grams of the drug daily
The other participants received an inactive placebo with escalating “dosages” during the study
“Acetazolamide makes certain foods and carbonated beverages taste really bad,” said Van Stavern
an associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences and of neurology
“Some experts thought that acetazolamide might be causing people to lose weight just because they avoided foods that didn’t taste good.”
But the researchers found an additional benefit in participants taking the drug
patients in both study groups had improved vision
But for those who lost weight and took the drug
eyesight improved almost twice as much as in those who lost weight but got the placebo
those who took the glaucoma drug also had less swelling in the optic nerve than those who lost weight and received the placebo
The drug-weight loss combination also was linked to greater improvements in daily function and quality of life
the patients who took the drug and did the weight-loss regimen fared much
“Their vision improvement was independent of the fact that the drug makes some foods taste lousy.”
Van Stavern said he expects more information will be culled from the data over the next few years
Several hormones and a number of genes have been linked to idiopathic intracranial hypertension
the researchers said many patients stand to benefit
“This study provides a much-needed evidence base for using acetazolamide as an adjunct to weight loss,” said Michael Wall
the national director of the study and a professor of neurology and ophthalmology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City
“This drug has been around since the 1950s
and prior studies have found varying degrees of efficacy
One strength of our study is that we slowly introduced patients to the highest tolerated dose in an attempt to maximize efficacy while limiting side effects.”

Riot V consisting of lead vocalist Todd Michael Hall
bassist Don Van Stavern and drummer Frank Gilchriest have unveiled a lyric video for their new single “High Noon” from their upcoming studio album Mean Streets
which will be released via Atomic Fire Records on February 16
In an interview with Marko Syrjala for Metal-Rules back in November 2022
Van Stavern explained why Riot V decided to switch labels from Nuclear Blast Records to Atomic Fire Records
Van Stavern indicated (with slight edits):
Markus – I don’t know if you know Markus Wosgien from them
He was the critical guy that signed us to Nuclear Blast
it was years ago when we did Unleash The Fire
He contacted me and said they were going to sell the company
And he was giving me the reasoning why he wanted us to come because we still had one more record to do with them
but the cool thing about Nuclear Blast is that they didn’t do any legal thing against us
“What’s different?” And he said that Nuclear Blast is going towards a more modern direction
And he said Atomic Fire is still going to do vinyl / CDs
but they’re still going to do physical albums too
“Wow.” And then another thing is that you want people you know and love Riot
and so do Flori and all the other people there
They’re the ones that did all our business at Nuclear Blast
I don’t really know a lot of the people over there now
“You want to have somebody that knows Riot
who is friends with you and keeps everything on the table.” So I said
It’s a no-brainer.” I want to keep it old school
And people that love us and will help us grow
we will not hold you anything.” And so we decided to make a move
And we’ve been doing… I’ve been talking to them
And the album should be out in mid-next year—April

SA Slayer’s Steve Cooper and Don Van Stavern
Steve Cooper and guitarist Bob ‘Mad Dog’ Catlin
Future Sacred Reich/Machine Head drummer Dave McClain in Slayer
The San Antonio Slayer onstage at the Villa Fortuna during the ‘Slayer vs Slayer’ show
Tom Araya of the ‘other’ Slayer onstage in San Antonio in 2018 – note the ‘Slayer vs Slayer’ T-shirt
one crazy gig – this is what happened when a pre-fame Slayer shared a bill with another band named Slayer
On November 30, 1984, Slayer played their very first gig in San Antonio
The up-and-coming LA thrashers been booked in at the Villa Fontana
an old country music dancehall with a wooden balcony and a classic desertscape painted on the wall behind the stage
The band on before them that night were a bunch of local San Antonio kids who had carved out a name for themselves in their hometown’s vibrant metal scene
This wasn’t the first time two different bands had used the same name
but it’s the only time identically named bands have shared the same bill
the night Slayer went head-to-head with Slayer at the Villa Fortuna has passed into legend as 80s metal’s ultimate Battle Of The Bands
a fight for the name – and the soul – of Slayer
there was a clear winner: the LA Slayer stood victorious
ready to consign their Texan rivals to obscurity and write their own name in the history books
Except what really happened is a little more complicated
“There were all sorts of rumours and stories - that we’d got a cease-and-desist letter
that this was a battle for the Slayer name,” Don Van Stavern
bassist with the San Antonio version of Slayer
The teenage Van Stavern formed his version of Slayer with 15-year-old drummer Dave McClain in 1981
The name was a shortened version of Dragonslayer – ironically
exactly same thing the other Slayer called themselves at first
because he sang super-high,” says McClain of Cooper
“He was older than the rest of us – he was 22
Texas was a hotbed of metal at the time. Houston had Helstar and Austin had future prog-metal trailblazers Watchtower
though Van Stavern says his band were bigger than both
They were also the first of the three to put out a record
six tracks of unpolished but energetic early 80s power metal released via local label Rainforest Records
It was around that time that they heard about another band calling themselves Slayer
Sign up below to get the latest from Metal Hammer
Van Stavern: “We got a call: ‘Hey
do you guys know there’s another Slayer in LA
and they’re about to put out an album too?’ We were totally unfamiliar with them
there can be two Slayers – they’re the LA Slayer
we need to do something about this.’ We said
‘We came out first.’ And they said
we’ve been recording for a year.’”
Some low-level back and forth between the bands followed, though Van Stavern denies his Slayer were ever sent a cease-and-desist letter by the other Slayer’s label, Metal Blade
telling them to stop using the name (in an email to Classic Rock
Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel confirms that no cease-and-desist letter was ever sent)
Prepare To Die would ultimately be overshadowed by the LA Slayer’s debut album
“Metal Blade had better distribution
so we kind of started getting squashed,” says Van Stavern
Except it didn’t quite play out like that
The Prepare To Die EP had done well enough for the San Antonio Slayer to go into the studio in early 1984 to record a full-length album
Go For The Throat (hotshot guitarist Ron Jarzombek had replaced Art Villareal the previous year)
Between starting the album and finishing it
McClain and Steve Cooper had begun jamming with Mark Reale
There was talk that the pair would join a new band Reale was putting together
“The other guys from Slayer were saying
Are we gonna continue this?’” says Van Stavern
see how this goes.’ So Slayer was kind of put on hiatus.”
With the band out of action for the foreseeable future
Rainforest Records saw no point in releasing Go For The Throat and shelved it
And that was that for San Antonio’s Slayer
when a local promoter friend approached them with a proposition
He was booking a show at the the Villa Fontana theatre by the Los Angeles Slayer – and he wanted the San Antonio Slayer to get back together to play
‘How about Slayer with special guests Slayer?’” says Van Stavern
that would be crazy.’ We figured it was a good idea – we were all in metal together.”
“When Show No Mercy came out
whatever,’” says McClain “Then when the Haunting The Chapel EP came out [in August 1984]
this is sick.’ We’d drive around in our friend’s car like Beavis & Butt-head
A friend in San Antonio made a flyer for the show
it featured the names of the two bands and their respective hometowns (“Los Angeles
TX”) under the none-more-thrash slogan “1000 mph or death!”
“They played Austin the night before we were playing with them
so we went down to hang out and say hello,” says Dave McClain
cool…’” (Things couldn’t have been that tense – Don Van Stavern recalls introducing the Californian band)
The day of the San Antonio show, the LA Slayer turned up at La Villa Fortuna in drummer Dave Lombardo’s Trans-Am
with their equipment in a trailer hooked to the back
“I remember them making fun of us cos we had my mom’s Cadillac with a U-Haul on it,” says McClain
the local Slayer helped the out-of-towners bring their equipment into the venue
“We shared a dressing room backstage,” says Van Stavern
The only one that didn’t talk a lot was [guitarist] Kerry King
partly on novelty factor but mostly on the strength of the bill
The LA Slayer had a growing underground buzz around them
while the SA Slayer were genuine hometown heroes
even if they’d been out of action for the past few months
there were kids literally hanging off the balcony,” says Van Stavern
opened up the show before the San Antonio Slayer came on
‘Let’s play the heaviest show we can play
the best show we can play,’” says Van Stavern
“When you’re playing a show like that
“The show was crazy,” says McClain
“It was mayhem - there was stage diving
The other Slayer were no slackers when it came to serving up a spectacle of their own
“They had a great reaction too,” says Van Stavern
“But it was a different style – power metal against thrash metal.”
any potential rivalry between the namesake bands failed to materialise
maybe even helped them pack up,” says McClain
“I think Lombardo may have even taken off with a couple of my cymbal stands
I’ve never asked him about it.”
And what of the whole ‘Battle Of The Bands’ angle
“The whole ‘versus’ thing came out afterwards
It wasn’t a battle for the name - we were already on our way out.”
but says he’s never brought up the San Antonio show)
Guitarist Ron Jarzombek went on to join Watchtower
while Bob Catlin stayed active in the Texas metal scene
Singer Steve Cooper passed away in 2006 at the age of 47
the debut album they recorded and shelved in 1984
“Some guy put it out independently,” says Van Stavern
Put ‘S.A.’ in front of it so they know it’s not the other Slayer
But the original artwork just said ‘Slayer’.”
That album would become a cult favourite among underground metal afficionados
“I get people coming up to me all the time and asking me to sign it,” says McClain
Van Stavern and McClain briefly regrouped with Catlin
Jarzombek and ex-Watchtower singer Jason McMaster in 2022 to re-record a couple of old songs
When Classic Rock speaks to Van Stavern at the end of 2023
he says there has been interest in a potential full reunion from festivals
“It’s not out of the question to see the band reform again and go out with a bang,” says the bassist
“The way we should have gone out first time around.”
There’s one more amusing wrinkle in the story
the LA Slayer played San Antonio as part of their farewell tour
Frontman Tom Araya took to the stage that night wearing a T-shirt featuring the original ‘Slayer vs Slayer’ flyer – a sweet nod to their shared history
That’s a no-brainer,” says Van Stavern with a laugh
“Even though I’m in Riot and the other guys have gone on to do other things
I’d love to have had their career.”

The fictional police detective is coming to a screen near you soon
Based on Norwegian author Jørn Lier Horst’s novels about police detective William Wisting, Wisting is described as a character-driven thriller series of Nordic noir with a strong
The show is available in Norway on TV3 and Viaplay from 11 April
Wisting was filmed in and around Larvik-Stavern in the Vestfold region
The books have sold over 1.2 million copies in Norway alone and been translated into 30 languages
The ten 45-minute episodes follow the story of Wisting
who has lost his wife and raises his daughter alone while trying to bring down Norway’s most notorious criminals
Norwegian actor Sven Nordin
who was most recently seen in Norwegian broadcaster NRK’s Valkyrien (The Valkyrie) series
with Canadian Hollywood-actress Carrie-Anne Moss playing the role of FBI agent Maggie Griffin
Directed by and Katarina Launing and Trygve Allister Diesen
who has also scripted with Kathrine Valen Zeiner
Wisting started the 150-day shooting schedule in January 2018
The series has been pre-sold to a few international broadcasters and streaming services
While several of Jørn Lier Horst's Wisting series of books have been translated into English
the expected international release of the TV series will surely catapult his name into the international mainstream
The former Senior Investigating Officer at Vestfold Police district released his debut novel
he's also written a whole host of children's books
The budget of NOK 110 million (€11.4 million) includes a Norwegian Incentive Scheme framework grant of NOK 26.05 million (€2.7 million) from the Norwegian Film Institute
Co-producers Cinenord Drama are the first Norwegian production company to receive the full €1 million grant from Creative Europe for Wisting
“Obviously we are very excited about this support from Creative Europe MEDIA
which we also see as a recognition both of the project and of our company,” said Norwegian producer Silje Hopland Eik
who will produce the series with Terez Hollo-Klausen and Anni Faurbye Fernandez
Fernandez told Variety that the show will be more than a classic Nordic Noir
“It’s obviously a crime series but its also about the relationship between a father whose wife has died and his daughter
it’s about grief; yet we don’t want the show to be too dark and slow
and we will strive to make it very visually appealing,” added the producer
Creative Europe MEDIA announced in May the first list of recipients for 2018
Other Norwegian projects to receive financial support were the Norwegian Fabelaktiv series Helium and Norsk Fjernsyn documentary War of Art
Wisting and Italy’s My Brilliant Friend were the only projects to be awarded the full €1 million
A sub-division of the European Commission’s MEDIA programme
Creative Europe supports European film and audiovisual industries financially in the development
It helps to launch projects with a European dimension and nurtures new technologies; it enables European films and audiovisual works including feature films
documentaries and new media to find markets beyond national and European borders; it also funds training and film development schemes
Ten non-EU countries including Norway are eligible to apply for funding
Last year the Norwegian audiovisual industry received various grants totalling NOK 29 million (€3 million)

Please tell me what my options are for seeing this in the U.S.
I am totally addicted to Nordic films and shows
I don’t bother watching most American programming anymore
They’ve only recently finished filming it
There is one guy that I know of uploading with US subtitles on torrents but that’s about it
At the current time he is only on episode 2 so it may be awhile
I do see the entire series uploaded to a torrent by someone else but it’s completely Russian dubbed which ruins the whole thing (I guess unless you are Russian) because all original voices are gone
It is obvious that the person that created the subtitle file does not speak English very well
The Russian Language can be turned off by going into the audio drop down box and choosing original Norwegian
It’s the crap subtitles I can’t get past
I have all the files and am currently on episode 2 but the subtitles suck so bad
(I have not read the books so I don’t know how the TV version compares) You wrote above
that he was raising a daughter on his own after his wife died recently
Terje mentioned they were twins this while “chatting” in the interview room in Episode 7
