In what was once a quay foundation at the Tønsberg harbour
archaeologists have found a rare game piece
Game pieces themselves are not a rare find. Archaeologists actually find a fair number of them. People played so much during the Middle Ages that they developed gambling problems, which were addressed in legislation
"Finding runes is special," archaeologist Hanne Ekstrøm Jordahl tells sciencenorway.no
She is the office manager for the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Research's (NIKU) office in Tønsberg and the project leader for the excavation in Tønsberg city centre
"We have picked up hundreds of wooden bits and cattle ribs
and we've turned them over and examined them multiple times
The game piece was the first rune find in Tønsberg in over eight years
"Now we have two rune finds in a relatively short time
This is the kind of thing that really excites us," says Jordahl
The archaeologists believe they see three runes on the rune stick
which may have been a marker stick – a kind of label of some sort
" We’ll have to wait for one of the runologists to examine it before we know more about what it might say," she says
It has likely been tightly packed in wood chips for perhaps 800 years
Although dating tests have not yet been conducted
Jordahl estimates it likely dates to the 1200s
Maybe they were sitting in one of the town's taverns
Jordahl and her colleagues suggest the piece might have been used to play checkers
Three other game pieces were also found nearby
Runologist Kristel Zilmer from the Museum of Cultural History has examined the game piece from the Tønsberg excavation and confirms that it has an r on one side and a u on the other
"It's interesting that some runes and Latin letters share similar forms," says Zilmer
The r on the game piece is similar to the one we use today
which people in the Middle Ages would also recognise from Latin script
we identify it as a rune because that’s what we would expect on small medieval artefacts like this
and both symbols are typical of runic script,” says Zilmer
Zilmer examined the game piece before its conservation
making it easier to distinguish deliberate cuts and carvings from incidental marks
Although Zilmer has only seen photos of the rune stick
she confirms that it appears to show runes
no more than 5-6 game pieces with runes have been found in Norway
Two of them were found in Oslo in the 1980s
The other bore the woman's name Sigrid (Sigríðr)
a game piece made of whale bone with a circular design on the top was discovered
it was engraved with Viking (Víkingr) – a well-known male name in the Nordic Middle Ages
On a fragment of what may have been a game piece found in Tønsberg in the early 1970s
the name Lodur (Lóðurr) might be inscribed
This is also a name known from the Norse poem Völuspá
Finally, a game piece with runes was found a couple of years ago in Trondheim
it appears to be a soapstone game piece with intricate ornamentation
It is believed that rune forms are part of the decoration and have been interpreted as runic script," says Zilmer
Confirmed finds indicate that some individuals carved their names into their game pieces
The latest discovery features just two letters
"There’s some mystery around these simple runes
or is the piece itself marked in a way that assigned it a specific role in the game?" she asks
"We can assume that games and other activities were part of daily life in the medieval town," says Zilmer
they could create problems – or perhaps opportunities – for those involved
A rune stick found at the dock in Bergen confirms this
there may be the male name Erlend and a reference to betting money – the interpretation is somewhat unclear
'from daring dice games come all kinds of outcomes.'

In 1904, the world was captivated by the discovery of the Oseberg ship, a remarkable artifact from the Viking era, just outside the charming town of Tønsberg, Norway—the country's oldest inhabited town. Today, Tønsberg continues to entice history enthusiasts and curious travelers with its deep Viking heritage
and at the heart of this cultural heritage stands the impressive Vikingodden
Known as the Oseberg Viking Heritage project, Vikingodden is a unique endeavor dedicated to preserving and reviving age-old shipbuilding traditions. The project is committed to recreating tools and construction methods exclusively from the 12th-century Viking era
All the work at Vikingodden is carried out on a voluntary basis. Enthusiasts and experts alike donate their time and skills to the cause. While the project operates year-round, weekends offer a special opportunity for visitors to interact with knowledgeable local guides who tell tales of Vestfold's long Viking history
Vestfold is the region that encompasses Tønsberg
Vestfold was also an ancient Viking region
Next to Vikingodden, visitors will encounter impressive replicas of historic vessels, including the renowned Oseberg ship (named Saga Oseberg)
the Oseberg Viking Heritage project has embarked on crafting a replica of yet another iconic find
Vikingodden is conveniently located just minutes from the city center
While volunteer work takes place year-round
weekends offer a more vibrant atmosphere with local guides eager to introduce you to Viking Age shipbuilding techniques

The elevator hidden in a smokestack on Roosevelt's yacht now serves as a monument to the former president
The "Heroine of Dunkirk" rescued over 7,000 Allied troops during the historic World War II evacuation

But while the premiere brought a ton of new stuff to the MCU it also prominently featured one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most important locations
And unless you’ve really been paying attention you might not have realized it
But Tønsberg’s relevance in the MCU goes even deeper
Tønsberg is a Norwegian municipality with deep connections to Viking history
But in the MCU it’s been the site of some of the most important battles and discoveries dating back to the very first phase of the franchise
So let’s dig into when and where you’ve seen Tønsberg before
The one which showed Odin in 965 AD waging war against the Frost Giants
This is the first time in MCU history that we see the Norwegian locale
To stop the Frost Giants from taking over Midgard
It ends with Odin seizing the source of their power
which—although we didn’t know it at the time—was the Space Stone/Tesseract
which from here on out is an artifact with deep connections to Tønsberg
It’s revealed that Odin left it on Earth
that really seems like a terrible idea when it could have been in Asgard the whole time
The most recent time we saw Tønsberg prior to What If…
was in the epic conclusion of the Infinity Saga
With Asgard destroyed during the events of Thor: Ragnarok
King Valkyrie is now ruling over New Asgard
This is where we met Thor and Korg living their best/worst gamer lives
it looks like an unassuming fishing village
But with the magical Asgardians living there and its deeply mystical history
we expect the town to play even more of a key role going forward

The world's largest roll-on / roll-off vessel
is the first of four Mark V class Ro Ro vessels of the Norwegian shipping company Wilh
The world’s largest roll-on / roll-off vessel, MV Tønsberg, is the first of four Mark V class Ro Ro vessels of the Norwegian shipping company Wilh
Tønsberg is designed to transport high and heavy cargo loads
MV Tønsberg was launched in March 2011
Tønsberg incorporates an innovative low double bottom hull
The ship features six fixed heavy decks and three hoistable decks
The hull lines are optimised for low resistance in rough waters
The fuel oil is stored in protected tanks installed forward and aft of the hull
moulded breadth of 32.26m and a design draft of 11m
The vessel can accommodate a crew of 36 people in two tiers on the weather deck
The accommodation block also includes public spaces
A free fall lifeboat (aft) is accessible through a safe emergency walkway from the accommodation section
including a chill water air conditioning system
water ballast pumps and separate light zones
are designed to minimise energy consumption
Drip trays are installed to collect the possible leakage from hydraulic cylinders
The ballast water treatment unit and bilge water separator reduce pollutant discharges into the sea
The cargo handling systems aboard MV Tønsberg allow the loading and unloading of cargo such as high and heavy rolling cargo
All cargoes are loaded and off-loaded over a stern quarter ramp
The main deck offers a higher clear height than other Ro Ro vessels of this type
Internal ramps are arranged in sequence to enable the efficient and safe movement of cargo
The fixed and hoistable-type internal ramps allow movement between decks
Liftable decks are controlled by electric winches installed under each deck panel
The ramp system enables the simultaneous loading and off-loading of cargo from all decks
The weather deck is provided with a four metre wide ramp
to avoid the use of shore-based cranes for loading of cargo
The vessel offers total deck area of 50,335 square metres
of which 31,250 square metres are dedicated for high and heavy cargo
The strengthened stern ramp can hold 500t of cargo while the weather deck can accommodate aquavit containers
The vessel can carry a cargo volume of about 138,000 cubic metres
The ship has two pairs of water ballast (WB) tanks connected to anti-heel system
The fuel oil tanks are well protected to withstand the impact of grounding and collision
The tank capacities of the vessel are: WB tanks – 16,080 square metres
fuel oil tanks – 5,500 square metres
diesel oil tanks – 650 square metres and fresh water tanks – 475 square metres
The ship is powered by an electronically controlled slow speed B&W seven cylinder L70ME-C8 engine
which drives a single fixed pitch propeller
The propulsion system also integrates a low resistance rudder and transverse thrusters for high manoeuvrability
Tønsberg is fitted with a 1,200kW steam turbine generator and 1,100kW shaft generator for electric power supply during the transit
Three 2,400kW auxiliary generator sets supply electricity for the vessel in the port and throughout manoeuvring
The auxiliary systems and fuel tanks are designed for operation on low sulphur heavy fuel oil and marine diesel oil
The turbo generator system is expected to reduce the annual fuel consumption by about five to six percent

Archaeologists have found a richly decorated ‘knight’ chess piece at a medieval site in Tønsberg
The 800-year-old Arabic-inspired chess piece is richly decorated with circles
Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research
The ancient chess piece was found in a 13th-century building at Anders Madsens gate in Tønsberg
and has a protruding snout on top with two dotted circles
It is made of antler; lead was probably inserted in the middle of the piece
The piece is richly decorated with circles on the bottom
several dotted circles on the sides and at the top
“The design of the piece has an abstract shape, and is designed according to Islamic tradition, where no human figures are to be depicted,” said Dr. Lars Haugesten
an archaeologist at the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research
“No previous archaeological finds from Tønsberg have such details
which emphasizes that this chess piece is a unique object.”
“The game of chess was taken up in the Arab world after the conquest of Persia in the 7th century CE
and was introduced to Spain in the 10th century CE by the Moors.”
and may have been known in Scandinavia shortly afterwards.”
“The oldest find in the Nordic region is from Lund
dating back to the last half of the 12th century
That piece is similar to the find from Tønsberg.”

more than 1,000 gaming pieces have been found.”
there are some chess pieces but only 6 abstract knights.”
“Their shape is similar to the piece from Tønsberg
“The decor on the pieces is not the same as that from Tønsberg
yet the pieces from Bergen both have dotted circles and ordinary circles.”

Hei from Norway: we’re 100-odd kilometres south of Oslo, a five-minute walk up-and-over the ancient town of Tonsberg and taking a deep breath at the summit of Castle Rock.
We’re at Slottsfjell. Gazing up at medieval towers and down onto tranquil fjords (possibly a river, but nicer to think “fjord”), it seems a calamitous oversight that 13 years of this festival have happened without anyone mentioning it to me.
Maybe it’s the nostalgic atmosphere of the site – the haphazard set-up and lo-fi charm bring to mind Green Man’s original site and the early days of End of The Road – or maybe it’s the looming presence of UK veterans like Slowdive, Craig David and The Prodigy spread over the four days, but this festival feels instantly familiar and overwhelmingly comforting.
Oddly, The Prodigy’s set feels the same. Age has sucked the venom from them and you sense that when Keith Flint starts a fire these days it’s followed by a glass of red and Countryfile, but the classics still kick with enough chutzpah to keep them enormously entertaining. Slowdive, on the other hand, are enjoying a genuine creative renaissance and while a downpour that laughs in the face of being called merely ‘biblical’ keeps crowds away, it’s a treat to see them on such vibrant form.
Really, though, the last thing Slottsfjell should be treated as is a field of dreams where old-stagers get to swing a bat again (briefly diverting quickly-turned humdrum sets from The Hives and Paramore quash that notion); instead this is a chance to soak up Norwegian acts new and not-so-new, enjoy a handful of Nordic neighbours, and marvel at the idea of a Government which actually supports the arts.
We find Strange Hellos doing charming indiepop on the tiny P3 stage and fall hard for the confident strut of Hanne Mjøen, who does Scandi-pop precision with joyful effervescence. Over on the main stage, big-hitters Tove Lo and Astrid S produce shows that ooze star quality, with the latter’s “Party’s Over” burning brighter than the fireball in the sky that’s scorched us ever since the early not-quite-armageddon.
Three acts stand out across the weekend however: Anna of the North possesses a nuance and subtlety that raises her high above that well-trodden Nordic algorithmic pop sound.
Amanda Delara adds violin and cello to toothy beats that are sharpened by no-nonsense political lyrics concerning the rank stupidity, violence and greed of humans, and Pom Poko who, as ever, are on a mission to prove themselves the most riotously party guitar band on the planet, and entirely succeeding.

Shame, too, pack the sky-kissing Tarnlunden stage with their kinda-post-post-Britpop invective. Burning-up with the unarguable self-belief of furious youth, they bristle and thrill, and if anyone’s not converted then they’re keeping very quiet amongst the reverence.
Fittingly it’s left to a stellar Norwegian talent to close the on-site festival. Aurora’s huge crowd treasure every moment of a dramatic and surprisingly euphoric set. Those of us that thought her music too polite to triumph at this level are blown away, especially when “Running With The Wolves” threatens to flatten the very mountain we’re stood upon.
Most festivals end about now, but Slottsfjell just gets off the mountain and into the club. The warehouse space Kastellnatt witnesses all manner of late night kicks, from Lady Leshurr to Fanny Anderson, from Hasta to the Henrik The Artist-boasting Rytmeklubben, and we dance long into the not-very-dark Norwegian night, never ever spilling our beers.

Chess fans today may not recognize this decorated thimble-shaped object
but a recently discovered 800-year-old game piece from Norway is actually a knight
This knight is similar in design to chess pieces seen in Arabia
"The game of chess was taken up in the Arab world after the conquest of Persia in the seventh century
and was introduced to Spain in the 10th century by the Moors
and may have been known in Scandinavia shortly afterwards," the archaeological team noted in the statement
While the knight resembles chess pieces from Arabia
it doesn't mean that it was actually made there
the archaeologists refer to it as an "Arabic-inspired chess piece."
Though chess pieces with an Arabic design are rare in Scandinavia
this isn't the only example from the region
Archaeologists found the oldest chess piece known in Scandinavia in Lund
The piece dates to the last half of the 12th century and has a design that is similar to the one found at Tønsberg

plays the newly restored Rieger organ at the Pacific Union College Church
Tonsberg spearheaded the restoration of the 40-year-old organ
The Rieger organ at the Pacific Union College Church in Angwin is the largest of its kind on the West Coast
spearheaded the restoration of Pacific Union College's massive Rieger organ
When Barbara Tonsberg offered to help restore the Pacific Union College Church’s massive Rieger pipe organ
a church leader told her she couldn’t get it done for a reasonable price
Note to future doubters: Never tell this 95-year-old Angwin woman what she can’t do
the largest organ of its kind on the West Coast made its triumphant return to public performance
repaired of wear and tear and significant damage sustained during the 2014 Napa earthquake
one of the church’s former organists who last played in 2018
That wasn’t going to happen as far as I was concerned.”
This March marked the 40th anniversary of the organ’s arrival from an Austrian factory
It took a four-man crew six weeks to assemble the organ’s three main components
operated by the top keyboard or “manual,” was installed later
The cost of the restoration is still being tallied but will probably be around $130,000
less than one-fifth of the cost that had been estimated before Tonsberg got involved
Tonsberg served on the committee that selected the organ in the late ‘70s
“We searched all over the United States and couldn’t find what we wanted,” she recalled
Their search finally ended at the Rieger Orgelbau factory in Austria
Tonsberg says the organ is “of genuine Austrian heritage with a Germanic accent
Organs of this scale each have a unique sound
the one at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco is “wonderful
Even the manuals of the PUC Church organ are unique
Instead of the familiar modern arrangement of white keys for the natural notes and black keys for the half-tones
Years of regular use by organists and students took their toll
and the 2014 earthquake caused some of the heaviest pipes to bounce up and down
leaving some parts dangling by fishing line and rendering the organ all but unplayable
“It was worth $2 million and it was just sitting here,” recalled Tonsberg
The necessary repairs were estimated at $750,000
When Tonsberg told a church leader she could fix the organ for a fraction of that cost
she remembers him telling her “you can’t do that.”
“I could tell he had no faith in me at all,” Tonsberg said
Tonsberg pared down the estimate by eliminating what she deemed unnecessary “frills” and focusing on the essentials: replacing the faulty slider motors that were letting air get into the pipes and causing the organ to play on its own
replacing the toes and other parts that had been damaged by the earthquake
replacing the bamboo balanciers that had deteriorated over time
and replacing the felt pads under the four keyboards
Tonsberg said Pastor Emeritus John Hughson provided valuable help with fundraising — “he was so nice and so much fun to work with” — and the San Leandro-based Hupalo & Repasky did the actual work
“I knew what needed to be done and he knew how to do it,” Tonsberg said
When asked how she feels now that the organ is finally restored

KINGSTON – A supposed lapse in judgment or at least failure to follow the rules of liquor license approval has apparently cost the owner of Indian Pond Country Club the ability to sell alcohol on his golf course
Indian Pond Country Club owner Frederick Tonsberg will have another opportunity to convince the Board of Selectmen to approve the extension of one of his three existing alcohol licenses that would allow for the sale of alcohol from two mobile beverage carts and a building near the 10th hole
With four of five board members at the meeting
Tonsberg was granted the opportunity to have the public hearing continued to Tuesday
The 2-2 deadlock was a negative vote against approving Tonsberg’s request
Selectman Dick Arruda said there was a police investigation
but while the servers should have known better
there have been no violations in the past and as far as he would go would be to hand down one or two weeks’ punishment
“I have real concerns about doing anything about this is in a negative way,” he said
Selectmen Chairman Kim Emberg said she cannot support granting the proposed amendment to the club’s alcohol license when rules were broken
particularly after the Kingston Police Department notified ownership July 1 that selling alcohol on the golf course was not allowed and sales continued
“At the end of the day I’m a rule-follower type,” she said
“The police went out there on July 1 and said you have to stop selling alcohol on the course because the liquor license does not extend to the golf course.”
Selectman Don Alcombright also voted against approving the amendment
while Selectman Sheila Vaughn voted with Arruda
Jess Kramer was not at the meeting to cast the deciding vote
Tonsberg will also have the right to appeal the decision the board makes to the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission
Supporters like Forest Street resident Kevin Hynes who are members of the country club say it’s run professionally
and he said he has never seen anyone overserved
Supporters also say it’s part of the country club experience to be able to drink alcohol on a golf course
Town Administrator Keith Hickey said Indian Pond has never had a license to sell alcohol on the golf course
The application to amend the liquor license was filed July 12
and at least one country club member admitted to being served alcohol on the golf course after July 1
Country Club Way resident Julie Johnson said she has heard different excuses about how “only beer” was allowed to be served and that the club is short-staffed
does anybody care that Indian Pond is serving alcohol on the golf course without a license
Potter’s Place resident Dana O’Brien said she owns two restaurants on Cape Cod and she can’t believe some of the excuses she has heard
but she lives next door to the maintenance building and has witnessed people who have been overserved driving around on the golf course
“The liquor license is not being respected,” she said

Archaeologists recently made a particularly spectacular find in Tønsberg – a rare and richly decorated chess piece
Archaeologists from the Norwegian Institute of Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) found the small medieval chess piece before Christmas during an excavation in Anders Madsens gate in Tønsberg
Tønsberg is Norway’s oldest city and excavations there are followed closely by historians and archaeologists
The archaeologists found the piece in a house dating to the 13th century
But it is the Arabian pattern that fascinates the archaeologists the most
The design of the piece has an abstract shape
and is designed according to Islamic tradition
says project manager for the excavation in NIKU Lars Haugesten
and is cylindrical with a protruding nose on top
The height of the piece is 30 mm and the diameter is 26 mm
Lead was probably inserted in the middle of the piece when it was made
The protruding snout on the top has two dotted circles
No previous archaeological finds from Tønsberg have such details
which emphasizes that this chess piece is a unique object,” says Haugesten
Chess introduced to Norway in the late Viking age
The game of chess was taken up in the Arab world after the conquest of Persia in the 7th century
and may have been known in Scandinavia shortly afterwards
The oldest find in the Nordic region is from Lund
That piece is similar to the find from Tønsberg
the piece from Tønsberg appears to be a horse (today known as a knight)
more than 1,000 gaming pieces have been found
there are some chess pieces but only 6 abstract knights
Their shape is similar to the piece from Tønsberg
The decor on the pieces is not the same as that from Tønsberg
yet the pieces from Bergen both have dotted circles and ordinary circles
About the excavation in Anders Madsens gate
the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU) performed an archaeological excavation at Anders Madsens gate 3 in the centre of Tønsberg
The area is in the outskirts of medieval Tønsberg
The area is located near Slottsfjell castle
several houses and streets were discovered
and in addition the chess piece the archaeologists found ceramics
antlers and a whole range of artefacts that can be linked to the Middle Ages
And in the middle of it all – this rare chess piece

Veidekke Logistikkbygg and Kilen Syd AS (COOP
Canica and Profier) have after many years of planning and development work finally signed a contract to build the bulk shopping centre Kilen Handelspark in Tønsberg
The Contract is a design and build contract valued at almost NOK 370 million excluding VAT
“Profier and Veidekke started work on the trade park as far back as 2008
so in this case it has been a very long journey from start to finish
Our good partnership has been developed through several other previous projects
including Kilen Bolig that Veidekke built for Profier a few years ago
Now we’re looking forward to finally starting construction
and we greatly appreciate the contract,” says general manager Roar Kristiansen of Veidekke Logistikkbygg AS
Kilen Handelspark will comprise approximately 20,000 m2 gross area and will comprise a total of ten different major traders
Construction will be carried out in a working partnership between Veidekke Bygg and Veidekke Logistikkbygg
“We’re pleased to finally start building Kilen Handelspark
There have been challenging planning processes and numerous obstacles along the way. Thanks to persevering owners and a good and constructive partnership with Veidekke
we are soon ready to lay down the cornerstone
We are experiencing significant interest from major tenants and are sure this will be an attractive trade location when it opens in 2024
We also have further plans to develop homes and rehabilitate Tolvkanten,” says project manager Jon Lerstang of Profier AS
Construction work will start before the summer and will be carried out in two years
The commission is included in Veidekke’s order backlog for the first quarter
Veidekke is one of Scandinavia's largest contractors
In addition to undertaking all types of building and civil engineering assignments
the group also maintains roads and produces asphalt and aggregates
Veidekke emphasises stakeholder involvement and local experience
Its annual turnover is approximately NOK 38 billion
and half of its 8,000 employees own shares in the company
Veidekke is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange
and has posted a profit every year since its inception in 1936
The Illuminati has been under our noses this entire time..
One of the best things about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is how all these different projects - across movies
and one-shot short films - speak to each other
A throwaway line in an older flick might take on a whole new meaning five years down the line (like The Winter Soldier's "on your left" creating an emotional punch in Endgame's portal scene)
and it's this type of deep connective tissue that makes the MCU feel rewarding for those who keep up with it
But not all of these connective threads or world-building details are glaringly obvious
and characters in the MCU that are way more important than you might've realised
Whether these moments simply have more depth than is apparent on the surface - or whether they have bigger implications for the wider MCU that you didn't even think about - there's more going on in Marvel's big-screen universe than first meets the eye
and to borrow an analogy from a certain ogre
onion-like layers of importance that even hardcore fans could easily miss
The members of Thanos' Black Order weren't fleshed out very much during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame
with their backstories being removed from early drafts of the Infinity War script due to the movie being too crowded
there are various moments throughout both movies where we can glean more information about their personalities
like this one shot in Endgame where Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive hold each other shortly after Tony's snap (on the right-hand side of the image above)
when Thanos and his forces are disintegrating
It's an easy-to-miss detail that you might simply assume is a display of friendship as the two face their deaths
As confirmed by Endgame co-director Joe Russo
Proxima and Corvus are in fact married in the MCU (a detail lifted straight from the comic-books
and one that was supposed to be shown in that aforementioned cut backstory)
making this a tragic moment of two lovers sharing one final embrace

the Mark V is a next-generation roll-on / roll-off (ro / ro) class of vessel
the Mark V is a next-generation roll-on / roll-off (ro / ro) class of vessels designed to transport and handle larger and heavier cargo at reduced fuel consumption
Wilhelmsen and Wallenius Lines ordered Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to build four Mark V-class vessels
The first vessel built under the class was MV Tonsberg
MV Tonsberg is the largest ro / ro vessel in the world
MV Tysla is the third vessel in the series
She was named and delivered in January 2012
MV Tonsberg received the "Ship of the Year 2011" award from the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) for its transport efficiency and environmentally friendly features
The Mark V design was formulated with the aim of providing economical transportation and safe cargo handling at low fuel consumption
The design also allows for high ramp capacity and deck strength
The six fixed and three hoistable decks enable the vessel to store 138,000 cubic metres of cargo
which is 12m wide and has safe working load of 505t
allows the vessel to transport larger cargo units
streamlined rudder design and duck tail help the Mark V class to consume 15 to 20% less fuel per transported unit compared with its predecessors
The engine room is fitted with an advanced turbo waste heat generator that generates electricity from the waste: exhaust heat
It is estimated to reduce fuel consumption by 5 to 6% annually and thus cut down CO2
The engine room is located aft and the mooring decks are located forward and aft on deck five
The design length of the Mark V is 265m and its moulded breadth is 32.26m
depth to main deck is 15.20 and design draught is 11m
The design deadweight is 31,824t and scantling deadweight is 41,554t
Tank capacity for ballast water is about 16,080 cubic metres
diesel oil is about 650 cubic metres and fresh water is about 475 cubic metres
A total of 36 crew members can be accommodated on a Mark V ship
In order to improve rest and recreation for the crew members
the accommodation is arranged in two tiers on the weather deck
One tier is for living quarters and the other one is for public spaces and offices
Mark V vessels can ship large cargoes such as bulldozers and wheel loaders
Total deck area in holds is about 50,335 square metres and deck area for high and heavy cargo is 31,250 square metres
The upper deck has a cargo area of 2,730 square metres
5 and 7 are the fixed cargo decks intended for high and heavy cargo
In order to achieve flexibility and maximum utilisation
the vessel has three hoistable decks which are operated by electric winches erected under each car deck panel
Decks 6 and 8 are made of plywood plating to reduce weight and are intended for transporting ars
Arrangements for the Aquavit containers and project cargo such as windmill blades and yachts are made on the weather deck
The Mark V vessel is propelled by a six-bladed
single fixed pitch propeller and powered by an electronically controlled MAN B&W L70ME-C8 main engine
A Mitsubishi AT42M steam turbine generator of 1,200kWe and a Taiyo Electric shaft generator of 1,100kWe provide electric power during the normal sea going condition
Three Taiyo Electric auxiliary generator sets of 2,400kW each provide power during manoeuvring and in port
the Mark V vessel is installed with an efficient low resistance rudder and two Kawasaki KT-219B5 transverse thrusters
Kevin Feige and everyone at Marvel Studios has made it clear over the past decade that their films connect to each in both significant
The end credit in Iron Man made it clear they were creating something bigger than just a single movie and that subsequent movies would tie into each other
One Marvel fan found a pretty significant connection involving the Tesseract, which we know now is the Space Stone. Reddit user comrade_batman pointed to two scenes from both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger that reveal the location of the Tesseract on Earth
The user describes the two scenes: “The town where Red Skull finds the Tesseract in Captain America: The First Avenger
is the same town that the Frost Giants fought Odin and the Asgardians in the Prologue of Thor.”
First here is Odin and the Asgardians fighting the Frost Giants:
And here’s the Red Skull discovering the Tesseract in Tonsberg
the scene from Thor actually shows Odin and his Asgardians defeating the Frost Giants on their home turf in Jotunheim
It’s in Jotunheim where the Asgardians take control of the Tesseract
It’s more than likely he hid the Tesseract in Tonsberg for safekeeping or as Schmidt notes “the Tesseract was the jewel of Odin’s treasure room.” It’s possible that in his dispute with Hela he removed it from the treasure room and brought it to Earth for safekeeping
We know Odin didn’t want to keep two Infinity Stones in the same place
It’s why he delivered the Aether to the Collector after he reacquired the Tesseract following the events of The Avengers
It’s possible Odin might have had another Infinity Stone in his possession at some point in the past
Norway is actually regarded as the oldest town in Norway
The town was founded by the Viking Harald Fairhair in the 9th century
Given the significance of Tonsberg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
do you think we might see the town featured in upcoming films
Maybe the surviving Avengers could find another artifact that could be used in the fight against Thanos

Wilh. Wilhelmsen group made maritime history with four of the world’s largest RoRo car carrier ships ever built. As a first of the series, launched earlier in 2011, the DNV class MV Tønsberg also represented a 150th anniversary vessel for the Norwegian RoRo specialist
The Mark V class vessel is the largest of its kind
with a length of 862 feet offering a cargo volume of 138 000 cubic metres over six fixed and three hoistable decks
“This ship is the result of thirty years of evolution. The MV Toba, the first of the Mark Series, was delivered in 1978 and even before this Wilhelmsen was innovating in the RoRo sector,” said Captain Alex Maresca
Site Manager for Wilhelmsen Marine Consultants
sophistication and energy efficiency embedded in these ships represents the culmination of the company’s expertise in deepsea roll-on roll-off transport
recounts how a boyhood trip to Norway inspired him to go to sea
Captain Maresca has supervision responsibility for all four of these vessels
which mark the pinnacle of a career with Wilhelmsen that started in 1966 as a deck boy on a good old-fashioned liner the Tugela
the MV Toba was actually one of the Mark I series
The year he joined the MV Toba in 1980 also holds special importance for him because this was the year that his son was born
The reference point of the Mark I is a yardstick on how far Captain Maresca and his employer Wilhelmsen have evolved
The four Mark V ships will be deployed to the company’s round-the-world service of today
a 110–120 days roundtrip from Europe to US East Coast
US East Coast and across the Atlantic back to Europe
To serve this demanding trade lane with the ultimate in flexibility
the Mark V class stands alone as one of the most sophisticated RoRo vessels ever built in terms of high ramp capacity
“The ships are of impressive capability
but remember that they are designed to complement a highly complex and synchronized landside supply chain operation,” said Captain Maresca
Wilhelmsen has traditionally developed and built their new generation ships in Japan together with Mitsubishi Heavy
and in this case with the layout design from in-house naval architects Wilhelmsen Marine Consultants working in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy
One of the shipyard’s specific contributions
was the push for a six-blade propeller rather than a five-blade one
a decision that made the ship essentially vibration free
There is a long history behind this relationship of owner
The strength of the mutual commitment goes from the board rooms of Wilhelmsen
Mitsubishi Heavy and DNV down to where the welding torch meets the steel
That is quite reassuring when you are building a vessel of such precision and strength,” said Captain Maresca
noting that there is no room for compromise on the watertight ramp covers
Captain Maresca has been involved in the supervision of ten PCTCs and the Mark V vessels
including contributing to some of the design features
Mark III and Mark IV in various capacities such as outfitting
Captain Maresca currently supervises six people
The machinery and electrical staff have many years experience in the RoRo trade
we have more than 100 years of experience within the Wilh
Wilhelmsen company and most of this on RoRo vessels
has to go to these guys,” said Captain Maresca
DNV has been working closely with Wilhelmsen in Oslo and in Japan
with green and fuel-efficient strategies and concrete onboard solutions
This strategic top management level co-operation between Wilhelmsen and DNV was started a half a decade ago
One of the key issues was the determination of the performance goals for the Mark V
Some of the selected solutions to reach these ambitious goals were tested out on later ships in the Mark IV series
“You really have to credit the Wilhelmsen Marine Consultants team
who have been involved in the design of the entire Mark series since the 1970s
We are really privileged to be on the receiving end of this design process
putting it into reality at the shipyard,” said Captain Maresca
Four Mark V vessels will be delivered to Wilh
Wilhelmsen ASA and its partner Wallenius Lines
The second vessel will be delivered in August 2011 and the final two in 2012
Wilhelmsen ASA experienced a strong rebound in its shipping operations last year
with a 25% increase in transported volumes in 2010 compared with 2009
The entire cargo hold of the Mark V is arranged for customers’ high and heavy cargo such as excavators
With a width of 12 metres and a safe working load of 505 tonnes
the vessel’s stern ramp offers customers the possibility of shipping larger units than they ever could before
Main Deck 4 has an entrance clearance of 7.4 metres with 25 metres of width
which is also unprecedented for this kind of vessel
A Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (the former Unitor) water ballast treatment system avoids harmful transfer of microorganisms to the sea
all fuel oil tanks are protected to minimise the risk of leakage in case of grounding or collision
The first of the Mark V series is the MV Tønsberg
with the red coloured hull designating its ownership by the Wilhelmsen fleet
which is also at the quayside in the Nagasaki dock
MV Tønsberg is the fourth vessel with this name in the Wilhelmsen fleet
having been named after the coastal town in Norway where the company was founded in 1861
MV Tønsberg will commence service in the Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics’ round-the-world trade
Such demanding routing requires a robust optimum hull shape for balance of stability and low resistance
The other key design goals are efficient and safe cargo handling together with minimum environmental impact
6 and 8 – are to be operated by electric winches with the absence of hydraulic systems resulting in zero oil leakage
Hoistable decks nos 6 and 8 are to be constructed with plywood top plating in a steel frame to save weight
It is no surprise that with the above characteristics the ship is built to the standards of the yet-to-be-ratified Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships
DNV has reviewed and issued a “Statement of Compliance for Inventory of Hazardous Materials,” which is known by the industry shorthand of Green Passport and is essentially an inventory of all materials potentially hazardous to human health or the environment
The Turbo Generator system is estimated to cut the total fuel annual consumption by about 5–6%
SOx and emissions of particles (PM) will fall proportionally and NOx emissions by about 3%
All fuel oil tanks shall be protected against grounding and collision
Potential leakage from hydraulic cylinders for some of the heavy ramps (which don’t use all electric) shall be collected in drip trays as far as is possible
“This ship is as close to handcrafted as you can be in the modern shipbuilding era
The features of such ships require nothing less than the closest partnerships with the shipyard and class
The results are proof of the commitment of all parties,” concluded Captain Maresca

Summertime in Norway is more than just long days
frequent summer partying can lead to a sharp rise in public disturbances and violence
Police in most of Norway’s major cities had to deal with everything from street violence in Tønsberg to robbery in Bergen
brawls in Stavanger and a stabbing in Drammen
They blame much of the ongoing trouble on alcohol and all the so-called “festivals” now flourishing all over the country
“Even though we double our staffing on the weekends
the large numbers of summer guests and big festivals leave us with our hands full,” Ole Bjørn Sakrisvold of the Vestfold Police District in Tønsberg told Aftenposten.no
a 23-year-old Norwegian man was arrested after attacking a former girlfriend and two of her friends in downtown Tønsberg at around 2am
He was released Saturday evening with a restraining order and now faces indictment
The Tønsberg police are now bracing for a busier week ahead
an annual series of concerts on a local historic hilltop downtown
and the Jarlsberg Grand Prix for horse-racing enthusiasts just outside town
Tønsberg is also the gateway for summer vacationers with cabins on popular local islands like Nøtterøy
with folks often heading into town in the evening
Holiday drunkenness is often behind the seasonal surge in citations for disturbing the peace
“The weekend rush begins around midnight and last night it didn’t calm down until 5am,” Finn Belle of the Oslo Police District told Aftenposten.no on Sunday
police had a hectic weekend with several street fights around town
reported the website for newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad
Kongsgårdsbakken and Torget after the bars closed at 1:30am
a stabbing incident at Stømsø meant that police were too busy to respond to some complaints over loud music and partying in various neighbourhoods
One operations leader for Buskerud County police in Drammen and Kongsberg wrote in a log that they’d received “a lot of reports of drunk folks and disturbances of the peace.”
Police in Trondheim and Bergen were also dealing with drunk drivers and a robbery
while in Kristiansand police caught a man taking lewd photos of unsuspecting women on the city’s main street

The M/V Tønsberg, a RO/RO vessel was recently voted Ship of the Year. Fathom CTech’s Pete Lockley explored with the owners just what makes this vessel so special
The Scandinavian owners of the M/V Tønsberg
have long been at the forefront of sustainable shipping
The companies are known for their committment to exceeding all environmental regulations or meeting them ahead of time
and have a track record of investing in cutting-edge technology on its vessels
as well as funding research into the next generation of technologies
They have continued this proud record with the four vessels in the Mark V series
two for each owner to be operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL)
offering about 138,000 cubic metres of fully enclosed cargo space
The Tønsberg was recently voted Ship of the Year by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers
Wilhelmsen’s technical department in collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and built at their Nagasaki shipyard
it features a host of environmentally-friendly design elements that together yield a fuel saving of 15-20% per unit of cargo over the Mark IV (launched in 2000)
The company is keen to emphasise that the energy saving and efficiency gains come not from one single initiative but from the sum of many
They certainly feel that this comprehensive approach can only be brought about through excellent cooperation and a partnership with a knowledgeable shipbuilder
the company also called on the expertise of other parts of the group
as well as those with the most direct experience of operating the vessels – the seafarers themselves – in order to source and test ideas
Here we take a closer look at the ship’s green credentials
and examine the process and philosophy that led to the innovative design
Optimum hull shape for RO/ROs is a challenge
given the need to balance hydrodynamic efficiency with stability and cargo carrying capacity – especially for ships expected to operate at a range of draughts due to their versatile cargo mix over 120-day round-the-world trips
The Tønsberg‘s hull shape was arrived at after extensive design and testing work by WW and MHI
which went far deeper than the usual collaboration between owner and yard
Maximising available cargo capacity is one of the surest ways to reduce fuel consumption per tonne of cargo carried
WW therefore placed great emphasis on the design of the cargo hold
and believes it has achieved the most efficient use of space in any deepsea RO/RO to date
thanks to a clean structural arrangement with flush bulkheads
long pillar spacing and electronically operated lightweight hoistable decks
Hoistable ramps inside offer loadable space both on and underneath them
which is a new feature for such a large RO/RO vessel
Following proudly in the line after Mark I – IV
brings WWL’s capacity to new heights
the Mark V has a new feature: the large loading area on the weather deck
utilized for light and long cargoes such as windmill blades and yachts
explained that the bow and the flare angles in particular were carefully designed to minimize added resistance in waves and in deep draughts
the transom design had to balance the demand for form stability and drag; this is a tricky balancing act and a major challenge for RO/RO vessels,” he notes
“A ducktail was fitted to reduce the base drag experienced at deeper draughts; model tests showed 1% at design draught rising to 5% at deeper draughts.”
Gamlem highlights the importance of detailed design work both prior to and as part of the contract with the shipbuilder
Model tests for the Tønsberg were done even before the contract was signed and the full scope included tests at five different draughts
Tests were also conducted with and without ducktail and with several rudder alternatives
The Tønsberg is powered by a single MAN B&W engine
The electronically controlled (ME) engine concept offers a lower specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC) through variable electronically controlled timing of hydraulic fuel injection and exhaust valves at any load
The 20MW engine drives a single large fixed-pitch propeller – a conventional propulsion set-up perhaps
but one the company carefully considered before deciding it was the optimum choice for a vessel that spends up to 70% of its time afloat in deep-sea transits; its roundtrip includes two Atlantic and two Pacific crossings
the eventual choice of rudder was a streamlined
slim and twisted full-spade Becker rudder with a Costa bulb which yielded a saving of 4% over more conventional rudder types
The bulb was designed by MHI and fabricated by Becker
The bespoke propeller was designed and cast by MHI in Nagasaki and ended up as a six blade design to minimize vibrations
More radical is the inclusion of a turbo generator
that recovers waste heat from the main engine exhaust
using it to power an Aalborg boiler to meet the majority of the ship’s electricity needs
The turbo generator (T/G) works in concert with a shaft generator (S/G)
with the T/G output determined by the engine load and the S/G providing any additional power required
This arrangement is estimated to save 5-6% of total fuel consumption
as the T/G can cover the majority of the demand in normal sea going condition – approximately 700-900 kW
It is interesting to learn that a similar solution was indeed fitted to a series of Wilh
Wilhelmsen’s RO/RO vessels in the early 1980s; the comeback on M/V Tønsberg is attributed to increasing environmental concern as well as fuel oil prices
The determination to save fuel permeates every aspect of the design
with attention paid to opportunities both small and large
The ship features energy-efficient chilled water air conditioning
additional insulation of the living quarters
The designers also looked at a range of ways to cut down the lightship weight of the vessel
reducing displacement and therefore fuel consumption
The liftable decks (intended for light cars) were constructed by TTS with plywood plating to give an estimated 25% weight saving
cutting weight from the accommodation block gives stability benefits as well as reducing displacement
Aluminium was considered for the block but was eventually ruled out: at the time
large aluminium structures could not be fabricated in Japanese yards and would have needed to be imported at prohibitively expensive cost
As well as their focus on cutting fuel consumption and reducing CO2
the designers of the Tønsberg ensured that the ship’s environmental performance was optimised in a range of other areas
It is ‘retrofit ready’ for a scrubber
with space set aside in the funnel for the installation of an exhaust gas cleaning system
The ship also meets IMO guidelines on ship recycling
and comes with a green passport certifying that any potentially hazardous materials used in the construction of the ship
the fuel tanks are designed with double hull protection
to reduce the risk of leakage in case of any damage to the hull
developed a radical concept car carrier it calls the E/S Orcelle: a zero emission
zero-ballast ship with a pentamaran hull powered entirely by solar
Whilst the company has always said that E/S Orcelle will not see the light of day in the near future
the ship is intended to be a radical vision that inspires the design of real ships
Indeed the two owners and WWL have been actively testing solar panels on board the M/V Toreador since 2009
The Orcelle’s radical design elements were all also considered for the Mark V
but only the Waste Heat Recovery system in its entirety was eventually adopted although lightweight materials were incorporated in to the design of the hoistable car decks
Gamlem is frank about the pitfalls of bringing cutting edge technologies to market
saying “the output of today’s solar panels is generally too small to make a big difference and we feel that the upper deck is better utilized for cargo.”
“The pentamaran hull will only be interesting for very light cargo mixes or for very wide beams,” he continued
“which entails very high cargo carrying capacity far beyond what is considered commercially interesting today.”
“We have also studied sails to harness the wind energy but concluded that sails really do not fit our ship type very well due to air draught restrictions under bridges
stability issues and the high speed (20 kn)
which means that the self-generated wind often results in head winds that are unfavourable for sailing.”
Whilst the vision delivered by the Orcelle may still be some way off being a reality
the Tønsberg shows just how much can be achieved
Environmental concern as well as fuel price are major drivers for the strategy of innovation in the Wilh
It can therefore only be concluded that its knowledge base in renewable and radically efficient technologies will prove an invaluable investment as the price of bunkers continues to climb
So returning to the question in the title of this article – what makes the Ship of the Year so special
It can be concluded that it is not just the boundary pushing design features
but also a spirit of collaboration coupled with a willingness to explore and consider all options (however radical they may at first appear) that have contributed to making this vessel so unique

A scheme to give free condoms to islanders has been officially launched
"What we’re trying to do is de-stigmatise sexual health services."
A scheme to give away free condoms has been officially launched in Jersey to coincide with National Contraceptive Awareness Week
The service has been running since December and without being publicised has already provided 4,500 free condoms
To benefit from the scheme you have to enrol
which includes a demonstration on how to use them properly and advice on sexual health
Some people may be too embarrassed to buy condoms
Once enrolled you’ll receive an anonymous ‘C card’ which will enable you to collect condoms from any of the Jersey’s sexual health services
“Once you’ve got this card it’s kind of a free ticket to access anywhere that’s convenient for you to get free condoms,” explained the island’s sexual health promotion officer Aimie Tonsberg
She said research shows that free condom and education schemes reduce sexually transmitted infections
“It stops people having sex a lot of the time,” she said
“it actually prevents young people from engaging in sex because they’re more aware of the risks
The Health Promotion Unit hopes the initiative will help anyone who is too embarrassed to buy condoms over the counter
“What we’re trying to do is de-stigmatise sexual health services and trying to normalise them,” explained Aimie
Do you welcome access to free condoms for all islanders
Or do you worry that it will encourage promiscuity
Would you be more likely to use condoms if you can get them free
