SEACOR Marine Holdings has contracted a Norwegian group to install energy storage systems on platform supply vessels (PSVs)
making more than half of its fleet hybrid powered by 2025
US-headquartered owner will install containerised deckhouse energy storage systems on five vessels in the next two years to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions
switchboards and thruster control systems on these UT771 CDL design PSVs
when 2018-built SEACOR Yangtze is upgraded
It was due to arrive in Ulsteinvik after working in the UK sector of the North Sea
according to automatic identification system (AIS) data
SEACOR Marine contracted Kongsberg Maritime to upgrade four other PSVs with hybrid power solutions
currently operating in Namibia according to AIS
and 2019-built SEACORAlps operating in Qatar
The upgrade on these four PSVs will include a new Kongsberg Maritime K-Pos Dynamic Positioning (DP) system installed to replace the current DP system
SEACOR Marine chief executive John Gellert, who will provide the keynote address at Riviera Maritime Media’s Annual Offshore Support Journal Conference in London
said investing in hybrid fleet aligns with the company’s “core values of innovation and environmental stewardship.”
He said it would “build upon our record of leadership in adopting green technologies in the maritime sector” as Seacor Marine was one of the first offshore operators to install battery-hybrid systems
“This marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our fleet,” said Mr Gellert
“These energy storage systems are an investment in the sustainable future of our fleet and our ability to meet the offshore transport requirements of our clients worldwide,” he added
“We are excited to offer our clients additional hybrid PSVs that operate efficiently through reduced fuel consumption and related operating costs
while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Kongsberg Maritime senior vice president for after-market sales James Poulton said the retrofits would enable SEACOR Marine to lower fuel consumption and use shore power when in port
fuel consumption in DP operation mode on these vessels can be reduced by as much as 20%,” said Mr Poulton
the conversion will also feature a shore connection
enabling connection to power grids when in port
which greatly reduces the amount of engine running hours and emissions from diesel fuels,” he continued
“The key benefit of having battery power instantly available is to maintain the redundancy of the vessels’ power system
This is particularly useful when operating in DP mode
but also has its value in other operational modes.”

Norwegian shipyard manager dies after heavy object falls from a crane
Work has been stopped at the Green Yard Kleven recycling and conversion yard after the death of a Norwegian employee in a crane accident.
Hans Jorgen Fedog, chairman and general manager of Ulsteinvik-based Green Yard Kleven, and other officials were unavailable for immediate comment. One official declined to comment on work that was happening at the time of the accident.
But a person familiar with the yard and its operations told TradeWinds that the victim was a long-time manager at the specialist shipyard.
Local and national media have not reported the name or job title of the victim, who died on Thursday, describing him as a local employee in his 60s.
Fedog told journalists the man was well liked by his colleagues, and the yard is in shock. Employees are being offered psychological counselling.
Police and labour safety investigators were said to be present on Friday to inspect the yard.
State broadcaster NRK cited local police as saying the accident happened at 11.30am local time during a lifting operation.
“What we know is there was a lifting operation on a mobile crane that stands on a quay at the shipyard,” police operations leader Jens Dahl of the More & Romsdal police told NRK. “An object fell and is said to have struck the person. The result was that he died at the place of the accident.”
Green Yard Kleven specialises in dismantling or converting mostly smaller vessels, in some cases the same ships built at the former Kleven Verft.
It is not known what ship undergoing conversion or recycling was involved in the fatality.
An offshore broker who has recently visited Green Yard Kleven said at least five offshore vessels are under conversion there, three for Brazil’s Oceanical Engenharia, one for fish farm specialist Froy, and one for Alesund-based single-ship owner Sea Shipping.

snøhetta has been announced as the winner of a competition to design a new church in the western norwegian town of ulsteinvik
the contest — which was organized by the church of norway — attracted 38 submissions
the scheme seeks to create a customized and sustainable facility for the region that serves as a functional frame for the parish’s activities
the building will be sited next to the existing structure
the main volume will be primarily built from wood
supplemented by a supporting glulam structure
the winning design was chosen ahead of 37 other entries
the existing ulstein church was originally constructed in the 1800s. however, today it is lacking in terms of both capacity and flexibility. snøhetta’s new build will therefore accommodate a diverse range of activities — capable of facilitating several functions simultaneously
the church room and its associated programs are located on the ground floor
with the entrance oriented towards the existing structure
accessed via a separate entrance from the west
the administrative functions are placed on the first storey
which is entered through a public plaza beneath a large tree
the scheme seeks to create a customized and sustainable facility
the design team explains that the concept behind ‘excelsior’ developed from three words: the rock
is the foundation on which the new church is built — the construction conceived as a new landscape
the wood symbolizes future growth and sustainability
with the layered shape rising up like a tree
the space is created as a cavity within the wood
‘in the church room one can find both the horizontal axis in the community and pilgrimage
and the vertical axis in the connection between heaven and earth through the skylight,’ explains snøhetta
the building has been conceived as a functional frame for the parish’s activities
the new building will be sited next to the existing church structure
the entrance is oriented towards the neighboring building
the elevated chapel is found on the third level
which is separately entered via a public plaza
inside the chapel the layered shape rises up like a tree
internal space is envisioned as a cavity within the wood
the project establishes a clear dialogue between old and new

After over a decade of research and development
Rolls-Royce is heading into full production of their permanent magnet tunnel thruster from their facility in Ulsteinvik
the company is also introducing to the market a permanent magnet azimuth thruster
A permanent magnet drive is different from a typical thruster in that the blades are not turned by a motor or gears located at the center of the thruster hub
but rather from the interaction of a stator located in the rim of the thruster – which carries a number of electrical coil windings – and the rotor which is fitted with a number of very strong permanent magnets and to which the propeller blades are affixed
Rolls-Royce notes the internal footprint of their tunnel thruster is far smaller than that of a typical thruster which would allow it to be installed farther forward or aft in a new ship – thus providing greater thrust moment port and starboard
the thrust in either direction is the same with this system
It is important to note that Rolls-Royce isn’t the only company rolling out permanent magnet tunnel thrusters
however their design features a central hub that they say provides greater reliability and at the same time greater thrust efficiency
Rolls-Royce has also been testing a new PM azimuth thruster concept on the 31 meter research vessel R/V Gunnerus
Tests of the two 500 kW thrusters (pictured above) have shown efficiency increases of between 7 to 13 percent at normal cruising speeds of the vessel
and Rolls-Royce says owners can expect about a 100% markup at the moment on PM azimuth thrusters compared to conventional systems
however the advantages could provide a compelling argument
Rolls-Royce is aiming at upscaling this technology at targeting the cruise sector
PM azimuth thrusters will be offered at 1MW
and the PM tunnel thrusters in 1.6 MW and 1MW power ranges

Rem Offshore in Norway has signed a contract with Green Yard Kleven in Ulsteinvik to build an offshore wind vessel
Rem Offshore is best known as an owner and operator of offshore support vessels for the offshore oil and gas sector
although its vessels have occasionally been chartered for offshore wind work
The newbuild is its first purpose-built unit for the fast-growing offshore wind industry
The owner did not indicate whether the vessel has been ordered against a long-term contract or is a speculative build
The construction support vessel will be based on a Havyard 833 CSV design
Work on building the vessel will begin immediately
but an artist’s impression of the vessel
suggests it will operate as a service operation vessel and will enable turbine technicians to access offshore wind turbines using a motion-compensated gangway with an integrated tower/elevator
The vessel also has an aft-mounted offshore crane and deck space for containers
Green Yard Kleven chief executive Kjetil Bollestad said the company had “very good collaboration” with Rem Offshore to prepare the ground for the contract to be signed
Mr Bollestad said the contract to build the vessel “is important for the yard and the local maritime industry” and will provide work for many in the Sunnmøre area in 2021
The former Kleven Verft yard filed for bankruptcy in mid-2020
which focuses on environmentally friendly ship and rig recycling and repair

Norway's Karsten Warholm poses for portraits during a studio photo session on the sidelines of the World Athletics Championships at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest on August 24
wearing jeans in a local street race in his home town of Ulsteinvik in Norway
More followed and today a hundred or so adorn the childhood bedroom of the reigning European
It is the brightest gold in a small shipyard town on the edge of the North Sea
Warholm merits just a one-line mention on the town's Wikipedia page and yet his exploits on the track are perhaps how future generations will remember Ulsteinvik
The 28-year-old has genuinely won it all: three world championships
two European championships and an Olympic title in 2021 with a stunning world record time
It all began one day in the summer of 2003
Seven-year-old Karsten was convinced by a friend to take part in a race that the local athletics club was organising around the town hall
he took up athletics," his faithful friend Kristian Mork told AFP

"I also did athletics for years but because I lined up against Karsten
my list of achievements consists mainly of silver medals," he laughs
In the family home just outside Ulsteinvik
the bedroom where seven-year-old Warholm hung his first medal has been transformed into a trophy room
as well as one of the shoes he was wearing when he ran 45.94sec in the final to smash his own world record
That run in Tokyo which saw him become the first person to run under 46 seconds is one of the more astonishing in the history of the Games as he sliced 0.76sec off his previous world record

But there is still room for more gold from the Paris Olympics
just in case," smiles Kristine Golin Haddal
She and Warholm's father Mikal have been front and centre of his development as an athlete
The result was that young Karsten kicked a ball one day and worked on his athletics the next
Warholm made his breakthrough on the track when he was 15 at an unofficial national youth indoor championships in 2011
"He liked to try out different disciplines
to see if he could handle this or that event," recalls his mother
This grab from a drone video shows an aerial view of the Stadium of Ulsteinvik
where Norwegian Olympic 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm trained as a teenager
had an iron will and put in an enormous amount of training
on the playground or along the beach that he clocked up the kilometres
often outside," says his former high school sports teacher
"I'm not sure he always found it particularly fun but he did everything we agreed
Warholm won the world junior championships in the octathlon
a discipline he concentrated on for a long time
"He continued to be versatile and dabbled in everything until he was 18
But there was a drawback with the octathlon
Norway's Karsten Warholm poses with his medals after a competition in Trondheim
"He struggled to really excel in the combined events because he wasn't very good at the javelin," said a matter-of-fact Hatloy
It was not until he moved to Oslo in 2015 that the future world record holder really concentrated on the 400m hurdles
The rest will go down in athletics history
closer to home among the 9,000 or so inhabitants of Ulsteinvik and the surrounding area
The town track that he has pounded up and down thousands of times is due to be renovated
after which it will bear the name of their most illustrious citizen

Norwegian Electric Systems AS (NES) has been contracted by Green Yard Kleven in Ulsteinvik
Norway to develop and deliver the complete energy design
an integrated automation system and its future-oriented bridge system for a Field Support Vessel the Norwegian shipyard is constructing for Romanian integrated energy company OMV Petrom S.A
NES will supply frequency converters and electric motors for the propulsion system
transformers and its proprietary Quadro Master switchboard – a DC power distribution switchboard that enables the use of variable speed generators
The Quadro Master is supported by NES’ Odin’s Eye
NES will also deliver its integrated automation system – IAS – and own navigation system
developed in-house to meet the highest standards of modern maritime operations
The system will be delivered with a CBT notation (Closed bus tie)
closed bus-ties have emerged as a viable solution to enhance energy efficiency
These allow the integration of DP power systems and reduce the number of generator sets that need to run simultaneously
a system with active and reactive power-sharing across bus ties can mitigate and reduce the consequences of certain failure modes,” says Siv Remøy-Vangen
managing director of Norwegian Electric Systems
First deliveries will be made in the second quarter of 2025
with final deliveries and commissioning being undertaken in the second quarter of 2026
The newbuild Field Support Vessel will operate for the Neptun Deep project
which is the largest natural gas project in the Romanian Black Sea and the first deepwater offshore project in Romania
The ship will be an 89.5-meter-long multihull vessel
and furnishings for a total of 90 people in single cabins
The ship is to be delivered in the second half of 2026
“We are happy to have NES with us on this important contract
and we are really looking forward to the collaboration
We rely on partnerships with suppliers such as NES who can challenge us and ensure predictable project execution,” says Hans Jørgen Fedog
“Green Yard Kleven has taken over what is one of Norway’s oldest shipyard including a long track record and delivery of high quality vessels
To see newbuilding activity again at their facilities in Ulsteinvik is a true joy
Green Yard Kleven has an ambitious target of being the greenest alternative in the industry
I therefore consider being chosen as key supplier for this project to be a recognition of NES’ sustainability profile and our role as enabler of green transition at sea,” adds Siv Remøy-Vangen

Link Copied!Karsten Warholm’s races are incredible
with many track-and-field aspirants trying to dissect the way he attacks hurdles like a Viking in a sprint
how can we forget his signature roar at the finish line and that world-record-shattering 45.94-second run in Tokyo that redefined human limits
But Karsten’s journey hasn’t been all gold medals and glory
he faced a bittersweet moment—a silver medal after a heart-stopping 400m hurdles final where rival Rai Benjamin edged him out by 0.6 seconds
it was a humbling reminder that even giants stumble
But here’s the twist: setbacks like these don’t break him
steady influence of his parents: Mikal Warholm and Kristine Haddal
read through to know more about Karsten’s parents
grew up in the same tiny coastal town of Ulsteinvik
He wasn’t just kicking a ball around for fun; he played it seriously
And we can say that it is the same gene which has the passion for sports that he passed straight to his son
he started as a speedy striker on his local football team and tried to keep up with the legacy of his father
He wasn’t the type to hover or give pep talks
but his quiet support and athletic background gave Karsten that early foundation
And when Karsten smashed his world record in Tokyo
Mikal’s behavior clearly shows he is not into pep talks but loves cheering his son from the back

Who is Karsten Warholm’s Mother? If Mikal is the calm
Kristine Haddal is the engine keeping everything running
She’s not just Karsten’s mom—she’s his manager
But her identity lies beyond Karsten’s mom
she has taken up the job to protect Karsten’s focus so he can keep obliterating hurdles
both his parents were born and raised in Norway
he shows every bit of his Norwegian culture
This can be seen in his long-standing association with his hometown club
he still represents and trains with the club that nurtured his talent in its nascent stage

Norway’s Olympic Champion and world record holder in the 400 metre hurdles
the 25-year old Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm has quickly become one of Norway’s most recognisable faces
All of Norway had their fingers crossed that Warholm would bring home a medal from the Tokyo Olympics. He did just that, smashing the world record in spectacular fashion
Hopes were high following his world record run just a few weeks prior to Tokyo
Warholm broke Kevin Young's 29-year-old 400 metre hurdles time by 0.08s
But in Tokyo he blew the competition out of the water and took almost three-quarters of a second off his own world record
The athlete was born in February 1996 in Ulsteinvik on Norway’s Møre og Romsdal coast. I don’t know much about Ulsteinvik, other than it was the setting for Norwegian football drama Heimebane!
Warholm is now known as a 400 metre hurdles specialist
but that wasn’t the case earlier in his career
Warholm took gold at the 2013 World Youth Championships in the octathlon
Warholm holds the Norwegian record in the flat 400 metres and shares the European record for the indoor 400 metres
Warholm began to focus his efforts on the 400 metre hurdles
Following solid performances in youth competitions
Warholm competed in the 2016 Olympics in Rio
He placed 10th in the 400 metre hurdles with a time of 48.81 seconds

Warholm took World Championship gold in the 400 metre hurdles at both London 2017 and Doha 2019
placing him firmly among the elite in world athletics
Warholm ran his first outdoor race of the season at Oslo’s Bislett Stadion
His time of 46.70 seconds broke a 29-year-old world record
“It was very special for me,” said the Norwegian
“I train in Bislett many times a week as I live in Oslo
It was the biggest event in Norway since the start of the pandemic
so everybody was really eager to be there and cheer for a Norwegian athlete,” said Warholm

“It was like the perfect moment to be able to do that in those circumstances,” he added
Warholm’s record-breaking run just a few weeks beforehand meant he headed to Tokyo as favourite for Olympic gold. But standing in his way was American rival Rai Benjamin
Benjamin was also considered to be in the best shape of his career
The Benjamin-Warholm showdown was one of the most hotly-anticipated encounters of the summer games
Both Warholm and Benjamin shot out of the starting blocks
but it was Warholm who eventually won by a clear distance
The Norwegian’s remarkable time of 45.94m smashed his previous world record of 46.70m set just weeks ago in Oslo
the American ran the time of his life to take silver
a time which on any other occasion would've handed him the world record
