Voss at Sierra Nevada with students and a Dream Chaser mockup
From training as an Army Ranger and flight test engineer, to life as an astronaut in the microgravity of space, to educating the next generation of aerospace engineers, Jim Voss (MAero’74; HonPhD’00) has a list of career achievements a mile long
Now he is taking on a new challenge: retirement
Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences
Voss has served as a faculty member at CU Boulder since 2009
He has also taught at Auburn University and West Point and worked in the commercial space sector as Vice President for Space Exploration Systems at Sierra Nevada Corporation and its predecessor
My older brother was in engineering at Auburn at the time and I didn’t know what I wanted to major in
He said to pick engineering because it’s very broad
and I could move from that discipline to almost anything else easily
I really questioned whether engineering was the right thing and thought about switching over to physical education
I was wrestling for Auburn and thought I would like coaching that
But I stuck with it and finished with my Aerospace Engineering degree
I’ve always liked space and I like reading science fiction
Growing up we didn’t have a human spaceflight program yet
so even the idea of going to space was science fiction
there was a little tiny article in the Army Times that NASA was creating a new vehicle and would need engineers and scientists to be astronauts and you didn’t have to have perfect vision
When I read that I thought they’d created the program just for me
but didn’t get selected because I wasn’t qualified at that point
I applied (to the astronaut program) five times over nine years
Each time I was improving and had done things that made my application stronger."
Each time I was improving and had done things that made my application stronger
You know it’s a tough application and only a few people get selected
but it’s hard to accept you’re not good enough
To go through it multiple times you wonder if you’re ever going to be good enough
I did things in my career that were interesting to me that I also knew were relevant to NASA
Then I saw a note about the Naval Test Pilot School
I was being recruited for the Army Aviation Research and Development Command
but I asked my assignments guy if I could be sent to the test pilot program first
I thought it would help at the R&D command if I was trained to be a flight test engineer
You’re an infantry guy,” but I got bold and wrote a letter to the responsible general officer about it and he got me assigned to test pilot school
I’m convinced that program had a big role in me eventually being chosen as an astronaut
It would have been just for my application
Floating around in microgravity is a pretty neat thing
I like being able to move really heavy things around and do weird moves and flips in space
it’s almost overwhelming because it’s very different
You can be upside down or in any orientation
You have a different perspective on volume when you’re floating around
You can have someone lying up on the ceiling and they feel out of the way
It wasn’t until we got back inside that they said
‘You know that’s the longest spacewalk ever.’
I would have stayed out for four more minutes to hit nine hours
There were three of us on my final flight and we were giving an interview from ISS
The interviewer asked if we would sign up for another mission
Yuri Usachev and I both said this was probably our last flight
We trained for four years for the mission and a lot of that was spent in Russia
I thought I’d done everything I wanted to do
and I didn’t want to go through another couple years of training
It was time to do something different and I wanted to teach again
I got a couple months of very part-time instruction
but when I got to Russia my Russian was really not good
None of the training materials were in English and almost nobody spoke English
I really had trouble since I spoke it poorly; I wanted to speak it correctly
Roscosmos provided a Russian instructor and I spent every morning doing training and I eventually got there
I enjoy all the undergraduate and graduate students I’ve taught
I enjoy the interaction with them and seeing their enthusiasm
The difference at West Point is the students are very disciplined
If you were boring as an instructor—as sometimes happens— and they were sleepy
they would stand up behind their desk to pay attention
The actual mission is a lot easier than the training
so during the training they’re intentionally causing malfunctions
I still enjoy flying and working on my airplanes
I have a Cirrus SR22 and a Rutan Long-EZ experimental aircraft I built myself
I spend a good bit of time doing maintenance on them
although I think she’s worried I’m going to miss teaching
We went to Egypt when we were younger and are interested in visiting again
I’d like to go to New Zealand and go back to southern Africa
Our next big trip will be to Brazil this fall for the annual Association of Space Explorers Congress
but will miss my CU students and colleagues

When I first started this job 12 years ago
we noticed how drastically different our web traffic was for features and previews on the Kentucky Oaks compared to the Kentucky Derby
Ray remembers similar audience apathy toward the fillies when he was working at The Blood-Horse 20 years ago
But you don’t have to take my word for it – scroll through the Paulick Report’s Facebook feed and you’ll see the disparity in likes
and story links for Oaks contenders compared to the fifth video this week of Sandman cantering around Churchill Downs
I’ve always found this disinterest from racing fans puzzling
when the Oaks has produced race fillies they’ve later revered
who started dominating the distaff division that summer and won so many of us over with her gutsy second in the Grade 1 Travers
and the Oaks was her grand debut onto the classic stage
Other winners in the past two decades include Monomoy Girl
six-time G1 winner Malathaat was nothing to sneeze at
What’s even stranger is that the Oaks is a major event for on-site attendance
Its total is obviously lower than the Derby
but last year was reported to be 107,246 people
Methods for estimating attendance (and our confidence in them) have always varied from event to event
but it’s hard to dispute that an awful lot of people turn up for the race
the draw is to see and be seen at the party
but couldn’t you say the same for the Derby
means something to people – just not enough to figure out in advance who’s running
As usual, this year’s Oaks has storylines to love, and storylines to look sideways at. Trainer Will Walden brings his first contender to the race in Bless The Broken. Just three years into his training career, Walden has been open about his journey of recovery from substance abuse
and makes a point of hiring stable staff who are also in recovery
Bettors should take note that Bless The Broken has already seen (and loved) an off track
It could also be a breakout moment for jockey Ben Curtis, a British native who only just moved his tack here full-time in late 2023. Curtis will be aboard Drexel Hill, having partnered with her in her Busher Stakes win at Aqueduct in March.Good Cheer comes to the race with a perfect six-for-six record, hoping to be a flawless seven-for-seven. Even Thorpedo Anna had lost once by the time she won the Oaks. Could this Brad Cox trainee be the next big distaffer...or even Horse of the Year?
On a different note, trainer Carlos David is also here with his first Oaks horse. Longtime assistant to Jason Servis, David had gone out on his own prior to the latter’s indictment as part of a federal horse doping case. David will saddle Anna’s Promise for Howard Belford.
And of course, Bob Baffert’s official return to Kentucky Derby weekend will include saddling Tenma in the Oaks. The defection of Rodriguez leaves him with Citizen Bull on Saturday, but unlike her stablemate, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Chu's Tenma has the advantage of a better post position as she will break from the nine gate.
However it finishes, this year’s Oaks could be the start of a much bigger story that we’ll continue writing all year long. Take the next few hours to get to know the characters.

ABOVE: Chris and Jordan Voss stand before some of the supplies that will be available at CleanRite Cleaning Services and Supplies
FAIRMONT– Voss Cleaning Services has added a new division to its corporation as it acquired PC Janitorial Supply at 601 North Prairie Avenue in Fairmont earlier this year
owner Chris Voss has already had CleanRite ChemDry and CleanRite Janitorial
He started with CleanRite ChemDry 17 years ago and did that exclusively for about six years before buying the janitorial division
“We started small and have been adding on here and there,” Chris said
which son Jordan Voss is general manager of
This is the floor side of the business and they do carpet cleaning
tile and grout cleaning and hardwood floor cleanings
With this they do both residential and commercial floor cleaning throughout Martin County and also in Faribault County
Watonwan County and parts of northern Iowa
“Now through October is basically our busiest time,” said Chris
“A lot of people love to have their stuff cleaned when it’s warm and nice out.”
Jordan added that people also don’t like to have leaves
snow and slop from the colder months entering their houses so the spring and summer is a better time to clean
CleanRite Janitorial cleans businesses only
though Chris said they have done a few move out and move in cleans
though he said there is a demand for it in Fairmont
Currently they clean 38 local businesses with this side of their corporation
“Some are every night and some are a couple times a week and some are once a week,” Chris said
which Chris said they will likely rename to CleanRite Cleaning Services and Supplies
they might move everything to the new North Prairie location
For now though they’re focused on getting settled and getting the word out
“This addition allows us to sell all you can think of for janitorial cleaning supplies
From paper products like toilet paper and hand towels to soaps and chemicals and cleaning equipment like mops and big machines,” Chris said
He noted they had already been selling some cleaning supplies
“It made sense to purchase this and put it together and make the transition,” he said
“It’s exciting to do it on a lot larger scale.”
“It’s nice to keep a local family name in the town instead of having someone else come in that no one knows
It’s nice to have local roots connected to people.”
Chris agreed with that and said they’re glad to be able to offer these supplies locally rather than businesses having to go out and find their supplies out of town
“Not only do we deliver it to them but they can stop in here and pick it up,” he said
Right now the corporation employees 18 full and part-time staff members
Looking at where they started to where they are now is something the Voss’ are proud of
“It’s been an awesome experience to go from a small business that we had just with floor care to being able to offer all kinds of different services to not only individuals but businesses
It’s been a privilege to have this opportunity,” Jordan said

Texas - The Guadalupe County Constable's Office says a suspect was arrested without incident after an hours long standoff on Tuesday near Voss Farms Elementary School that prompted an evacuation of students
authorities were attempting to serve a writ of possession at a home in the 2000 block of Carter Lane in the Voss Farms neighborhood
Constables were met with a male suspect in the home pointing a weapon towards them
and called for assistance from the New Braunfels Police Department
and found the suspect armed and barricaded inside the home
Voss Farms Elementary was then placed on secure status as a precaution and the NBPD SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called to the scene
students were moved to another location by NBISD for reunification with their parents
they negotiated with the suspect and at approximately 4:15 p.m.
the SWAT team entered the home and arrested the suspect without further incident
NBPD identified the suspect as 64-year-old John Michael Herrmann of New Braunfels
He was transferred to the Guadalupe County Jail and is being charged with aggravated assault of a public servant
No injuries to officers or civilians were reported
Police said the incident appears to be isolated and there is no additional threat to the community
The New Braunfels Police Department is asking the public to avoid the area near Voss Farms neighborhood due to an ongoing heavy police presence
Police say the incident is confined to a single home and is ongoing
Voss Farms Elementary School has been placed on secure status as a precaution
We're told police have set up temporary headquarters right in front of Voss Farms elementary
Police and drones are on campus monitoring the situation
Students are being moved to another school due to safety reasons
The New Braunfels Independent School District (ISD) said they moved students to Legend Point Elementary out of an abundance of caution and dismissed them at 2:30 p.m
New Braunfels PD says more information will be shared as it becomes available

Shannon Voss’s story is one of remarkable perseverance. His extraordinary journey of resilience and triumph has inspired countless others to pursue their dreams no matter what unimaginable circumstances life brings
Shannon experienced poverty and homelessness as a child and moved around a lot
and even had to live in a homeless shelter for some time
Shannon went out to a bar by himself one night and was sexually assaulted
his roommate broke his bedroom door down to find him unconscious and very ill
He was rushed to the hospital and later doctors determined the damage his body had suffered
The assault left him with a severe brain injury
His chances of survival were a mere 20%.Shannon spent five months in the Intensive Care Unit at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana
Shannon spent another year and a half in different hospitals fighting for his life
While still reeling from his mother's death
from tracking movement with his eyes to walking and handling daily tasks like getting dressed
Shannon can speak but he communicates primarily through his iPad’s voice-to-text feature
Driven by a dream he had while he was hospitalized
he enrolled at Parkland College to finish what he started
Shannon graduated from Parkland College with a perfect 4.0 GPA
Shannon was asked to deliver the commencement speech at his graduation ceremony in May 2024
He credits the medical team at Carle Foundation Hospital
His team of therapists were present at his graduation and later threw him a surprise party in the very room he spent years doing physical therapy in
Voss now travels the country as a motivational speaker
sharing his story and inspiring others to overcome adversity and achieve their goals
He also uses poetry as a therapeutic outlet
expressing the emotions and experiences of his journey
Shannon gives talks throughout the community to inspire others who overcome their own struggles in life
In late 2024 Shannon was selected to be the keynote speaker at the prestigious 2025 Prentke AAC Distinguished Lecture at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATIA) Conference in Orlando
The Prentke AAC Distinguished Lecture Award
recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of assistive technology
Voss’s selection for this honor highlights his remarkable journey and his advocacy for the use of assistive technology in overcoming communication barriers

Charles Edward Voss (fondly known as “Speedy”) passed away at the VA Hospice in West Palm Beach
Many who knew him said he would never make it past the age of 30
but at 79 ½ he outlived some of his doctors and sadly
Speedy was a high school athlete and avid fisherman
He served on the SS Edson in the Navy where he lost his hearing
He was the original Ocean City beach boy who surfed
and sold telescope pictures before he began steaming crabs for 50 years
He and a few local golfing friends created the McVoss Golf Tournament
played by locals for local charities.
He was never married but is survived by his sister in Florida and sister in Hawaii
But sometimes he just settled in on his local fishing holes in the Florida Keys and Deep Creek Lake and visited friends
FL with his sister and enjoyed cruising on NCL where his last cruise was December 2022 on the Panama Canal.
We will be having a “Celebration of Life with Speedy Stories” in March
2025 where he will be laid to rest near his Mom and Dad (Margaret and Marty Voss) at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock Maryland

“We envision an America with respectful embrace of political disagreements
where civic friendship flourishes and competing perspectives strengthen our nation
… [Our] goal is not to change people’s views of issues
but to change their views of each other.”(From the vision statement of Braver Angels)
Listening to Bill Doherty describe the genesis of Braver Angels—the organization that he co-founded in 2016—evokes both a snapshot of the past and a vivid
It started the week after Donald Trump defeated Hilary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election
Doherty received a call from a colleague in New York City
who had been in touch with another colleague from southwest Ohio
The discussion turned to how people were feeling in largely liberal New York City (devastated) versus conservative southwest Ohio (very hopeful).
to get 10 Clinton voters and 10 Trump voters together for 13 hours over a weekend.
“We had a tremendous experience with this group of people
They found that they had more in common than they realized
and they wanted to stop fighting all of the time,” says Doherty
professor emeritus in family social science at the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development
but they wanted a reunion and we decided to keep going
Braver Angels has grown impressively in the eight years since
There have been 60,000 participants at over 4,800 events across the country
along with volunteers devoting up to 40 hours a week for the cause of elevating our discourse and relationships
with half identifying as “red” and half “blue.”
“We have to get beyond this demeaning of the other side
because we’ve had fundamental divisions in this country since it began
The secret sauce is simply getting people together to talk—and especially to listen—without trying to change anyone’s convictions
which stands for Listen to the other person; Acknowledge their perspective and feelings
Pivot (with permission) to your own views; and gain Perspective.
the Braver Angels workshops leave participants feeling less animosity and more friendliness toward people across the political divide
They often even discover that they want similar things and have more in common than they realized.
Leading with a curiosity to find common ground
Melinda Voss is the “blue” co-chair of Braver Angels’ Minnesota steering team
her parents belonged to a monthly political discussion group of six couples—conservatives
They met in someone’s living room and discussed a predetermined topic
“And they liked each other,” Voss recalls with a laugh.
and Doherty points out that we’ve seen a rise in affective polarization—a growing animosity toward the other party—for 40 years or so
“There’s a big set of social forces involved,” he says
“And every democracy in the world is facing this.”
“It’s not that we just don’t like the other party’s candidate
it’s that we don’t like the people in the other party,” she says
She echoes Doherty’s belief that behind every strongly held view is a story
“How is it that you came to hold your point of view
somehow it deflates the emotional tension and the antipathy.”
and we’re a stronger country for it,” adds Voss
who earned a master’s in public health from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities
“We’ve been a stronger country because we disagree
Voss’s complement in Minnesota is Scott Schluter
the “red” co-chair of the Minnesota steering team
Schluter spent his high school years in Cannon Falls
but has lived in predominantly liberal South Minneapolis for the last 30 years.
his involvement is less about politics and more about his natural curiosity and desire to meet and learn from others
“I love going into conversations when both sides can say to themselves
‘I might be wrong.’ That is incredibly helpful
and it makes me think about grace and humility
Schluter wants to be open to situations and discussions
“Being able to have conversations with people that think differently than me
I’m just so curious what can come out of that,” he says
Just enjoying other people’s company versus being angry.”
The impact of Braver Angels events is impressive
Voss shares the story of attending a national Braver Angels convention and meeting up with a red member there
They went out shopping and wound up having a great discussion about an often divisive topic
“I can now totally understand why she has that point of view
and why it’s a strongly held view,” Voss says
even though we have these different points of view.
where we can talk to the other side and actually still value them and understand them and maybe even like them.”

“Daily growth opportunities in the Christian faith and a deep immersion in the unifying aspects of spiritual disciplines are a distinctive aspect of a Taylor student’s experience and something we want to continue to strengthen and amplify,” said President D
“We are blessed to have David Andrews and Full Salvation Union come alongside the University in not only investing in the campus experience through the work of Dr
but enabling a greater global reach in building Christian unity among believers.”
Hank Voss holds a PhD from Wheaton College and an MA in New Testament and Christian Theology from Talbot School of Theology in California
He is also a Taylor alumnus with a BA in Biblical Literature and Christian Education
Full Salvation Union is a nonprofit with a mission “to perpetuate spirituality…and to carry on
charitable and religious work” intended to be “interdenominational in effort and nonsectarian in spirit.” Its first general pastor was E.A
who served from 1934 until his death in 1944
and upon his death in 2003 was succeeded by general pastor Leona Andrews
Full Salvation Union has focused on building spiritual unity expressed best by our Lord Jesus in his prayer found in the Gospel of John chapter 17,” said Dr
the current general pastor for Full Salvation Union
“Jesus’ charge to his disciples was not to build churches of bricks and wood but through the Holy Spirit to take a message of salvation to the world
to rise above what divides us and to hold to what unites us as believers
We are confident that the Union's legacy of Christian unity is in good hands with Dr
Hank Voss and Taylor University.”
Hank Voss will be able to invest in and build up programs and activities that tangibly reinforce the concept of Christian unity
These may be through academic programs—guest speakers
and even faculty-led student research projects—or through external engagements and partnerships with parachurch organizations (such as the World Evangelical Alliance as one example) with global reach and impact in furthering the cause of Christian unity

The following article was published as part of an exclusive content partnership with neo-trans.blog.A slew of construction permit applications were submitted to the Cleveland Building Department last week for the redevelopment of the former Voss Industries plant
in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood
This $63.4 million project along with a planned bus rapid transit corridor on West 25th promises to expand the vibrancy of the Market District farther south
In its latest and apparently final iteration
the complex will be called The Carriage Co
and feature 139 apartments above 115 indoor parking spaces plus ground-floor retail and restaurants
The redevelopment will also create unique spaces by reactivating the long-dormant West 25th Place and Hancock Avenues that intersect in the middle of the site
18 include requests for permits for interior demolition
fire or other code compliance issues found
it may still take months for the permits to be approved and work to begin
“The scope of work is to convert a historic factory complex compromised of 14 existing building segments into new apartments with amenities including indoor parking and a cold shell for office and future retail uses,” wrote MRN’s Chief Operating Officer Joseph Del Re in submitting the documents to the Building Department
redevelopment is Cleveland-based architect SA Group
Among its credits was the renovation of an historic building on Superior Viaduct in Ohio City for Snip Internet’s offices
prior to its acquisition last year by Chicago-based Zentro
SA Group has also worked with MRN on other projects before
Planned to follow the residential work is the provision of up to 24,000 square feet of rentable commercial office and co-working space
25,000 square feet of general retail and restaurant space
and 50,000 square feet of anchor food/beverage
according to publicly available documents from the city
MRN also owns several surface parking lots along West 26th Street behind The Carriage Co
“In order to assist with the project financing
the developer has requested the city impose a 15-year
non-school TIF,” the legislation read
“The TIF will support debt service related to the project
The project will create and/or cause to create approximately 125 new W-2 jobs at the project site with an approximate payroll of $3,750,000.”
The city entered into a 15-year non-school TIF agreement with 2168 West 25th Street LLC
the city declared certain improvements with respect to the project to be a public purpose and exempt 100 percent of the improvements from real property taxes
is that the redevelopment would clean up and repurpose a blighted property
In June 2023, 2168 West 25th Street LLC was awarded $5 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits
the project was authorized to receive an Economic Development Loan of up to $2 million from Cuyahoga County
the redevelopment was granted $724,838 from the Ohio Brownfield Program for cleanup and remediation of the site
The project was previously referred to as the Carriage Works but there is a smaller redevelopment nearby in Tremont called the Scranton Avenue Carriage Works
That project by Broadview Heights-based JAMM Real Estate Co
offers seven apartments and one ground-floor retail space
An e-mail sent by NEOtrans to Del Re at MRN
seeking more information and comment on the project
was not responded to prior to publication of this article

UPDATE: At approximately 5:30 p.m., NBPD released a statement that the scene is no longer active. At 4:15 p.m., NBPD entered a barricaded home in the 2000 block of Carter Lane and placed a 64-year-old suspect identified as John Michael Herrmann of New Braunfels under arrest. Herrmann reportedly barricaded himself in the home after being served a writ of possession by the Guadalupe County Constable’s Office.
UPDATE: NBPD said as of 4 p.m. that the incident is ongoing and remains an active scene with heavy police presence in the area. There have been no injuries during this incident and the public is asked to continue avoiding the area. Additional details will be shared once the scene is no longer active.
Voss Farms Elementary students and staff were evacuated to Legend Point Elementary during the school day Tuesday as the New Braunfels Police Department responded to an incident in the neighborhood.
The incident, which led to a heavy police presence in the Voss Farms neighborhood, was confined to a single home, according to the latest update from NBPD around noon on Tuesday, April 22.
The public was asked to avoid the area while officers were on scene. The NBPD has not provided further details on the incident.
Police recommended the relocation of students and staff out of an abundance of caution, according to the district. All students and staff were reportedly safe.
New Braunfels Middle School Principal Jonathon Campbell alerted parents that Pahmeyer Road in front of Voss Farms Elementary was closed to traffic and pedestrians as school was let out.
"I wanted to let you know that NBPD is continuing to respond to an incident in the Voss Farms neighborhood," Campbell said in the letter.
NBISD anticipates that students will return to school Wednesday as normal but is in constant communication with NBPD and will notify parents if anything changes, according to the district.

Texas — An Austin entrepreneur is making waves in the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by setting his sights on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
AGI is a type of AI that aims to create machines with human-like learning and reasoning abilities
I coined the term Artificial General Intelligence.” Founder and CEO of Aigo.ai said
Voss says that was always the original goal of AI to build thinking machines
you can have an AGI that you will tell it to
to become a PhD level cancer researcher and it will hit the books
and it will learn to become a PhD level cancer researcher,” Voss said
“But now the beauty is you can make a million copies of that
and you'll have a million PhD cancer researchers chipping away at this problem.”
ALSO| NASCAR: Where high-tech meets high speed
Voss believes that AGI is the future of AI and that the current narrow AI
is developing an AGI program that can learn and adapt without the need for massive amounts of data
unlike current AI systems that require tremendous computational power and energy
huge problem with the current approach of AI
and that is that they need massive amounts of data to train,” Voss said
like you know when we're having a conversation
The current technology can't learn about its life
Voss believes his program can achieve the language and reasoning abilities of a three-year-old in just a few months
he predicts his program will reach the learning level of a 10-year-old and then accelerate rapidly
is seen by Voss as the perfect environment to foster AGI development
He says with this ecosystem Austin could become a hub for this revolutionary technology.
