Carl Cox Motorsports rider Avalon Lewis claimed a strong fifth-place finish in Race 2 of the World Women’s Circuit Racing (WorldWCR) Championship at Italy’s Cremona Circuit
while teammate Billee Fuller continued her development with another valuable race finish
Kiwi rider Lewis wasted no time making moves
climbing to fourth position within the opening three corners of the 12-lap contest
The race’s early stages saw fierce competition at the front
with Maria Herrera charging through the pack to seize the race lead—moving up two places and quickly asserting control as the top five riders broke away from the rest of the field
A crash at Turn 10 for #22 Madelena Simoes was an early incident that failed to deter the leading group
Lewis found herself in a tight battle with Sara Sanchez and Roberta Ponziani
The breakaway quintet began to gap the rest of the field
opening a 3.461-second cushion to the chasing riders
Astrid Madigral pushed hard to stay in touch
but even she was 3.2 seconds ahead of the remainder of the top ten with eight laps remaining
bumping the Carl Cox Motorsports rider back to fifth
Herrera used clean air to stretch her lead and set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:40.463
climbed to 21st in the opening laps as she gained valuable experience in her rookie campaign
Fuller had shown promising pace during pre-season testing at Cremona but struggled to replicate that form in Sunday’s much warmer track conditions
Lewis began to lose ground to the leading quartet of Herrera
With just over 1.5 seconds separating her from the front group
the gap widened to 3.5 seconds as the intensity of the battle up front escalated
Ponziani lit up the timing screens by setting a new lap record—1:40.005—with just one and a half laps to go
Herrera was forced to fend off a charge from Neila
the two making contact in a tense scrap for the lead
Herrera held on to secure the win for Klint Forward Racing
followed closely by teammate Ponziani in second
Neila crossed the line in third after an error during the battle for the lead
Lewis brought her Carl Cox Motorsports machine home in fifth
8.5 seconds behind the leading four after a gritty ride and early-race heroics
1:04.7 adrift of Herrera and 56.2 seconds behind her teammate Lewis
With both riders gathering valuable data and experience
Carl Cox Motorsports continues to build momentum in the WorldWCR paddock

The high heat of Cremona Circuit wasn’t the only thing bringing intensity to the opening race of the WorldWCR weekend in Italy
as Kiwi rider Avalon Lewis of Carl Cox Motorsport delivered a gritty performance to finish sixth after a fierce mid-pack battle
while teammate and rookie Billee Fuller made steady progress to 20th
Lewis kicked off the day by securing P6 in Superpole
placing herself on the front two rows for Race 1
The achievement came under challenging conditions
as a dirty track and soaring temperatures added an extra layer of difficulty for all riders
it was a tough day here; the track was dirty this morning
making it a slippery start for everyone,” Lewis said post-qualifying
I managed to string a decent lap together to put it on the front two rows for Race 1
I’m determined to find that extra little bit of pace I need around this circuit—it will come
It was also tough on them working in the heat and pushing the bikes and equipment a mile to the pitlane.”
Lewis immediately found herself in a tight scrap for fourth with Sara Sanchez and Astrid Madrigal
The trio trailed the lead group—comprising Maria Herrera
with a substantial 7.1-second cushion back to the rest of the field
eventually slotting into sixth with three laps to go
She brought the Carl Cox Motorsport machine home in P6—another solid result as she continues to build momentum in the championship
Fuller fought her way up from a back-row start in P22 to finish 20th
The 17-year-old Kiwi showed promising progress
gaining valuable race experience as she adapts to the demands of international competition
In a showdown between Klint Forward Racing teammates
Ponziani sat in the slipstream of Herrera for nearly the entire race before making a decisive move on the final lap to claim her maiden WorldWCR victory
with Sanchez and Madrigal rounding out the top five
The results shake up the championship standings: Herrera now leads with 65 points
Lewis moves up to eighth overall with 23 points
“Solid race one here in Cremona coming home sixth
Great start and I hung on to the front group for a couple of laps but didn’t seem to have the rear grip to run that pace and dropped back
Really happy with the improvement in my lap times for now.” said Lewis
Race 2 promises more drama as the field regroups for another shot at glory in Cremona
The race is set to go green at 10.45 pm NZT

Lower Hutt's mayor said a new skatepark has been so popular
it has managed to garner more people than its previous location
The Moututawa Avalon skatepark replaced the existing Melling Skatepark at the RiverLink on Block Road
Saturday it finally had its official community day after the opening to celebrate its launch was delayed after a five-year-old boy drowned in a duck pond at Avalon Park
The celebrations included workshops on how to skate
trick demonstrations and time for everyone to skate together
A survey to move the park showed 85 percent of the 200 respondents were in support of it
Mayor Campbell Barry said consulting with skaters and mana whenua has given the park a thumbs up from the public
"I think the design of this park and making sure that we actually included skaters and others in that process has meant there's been a real ownership and excitement
I feel like it's made a bit of a difference and also the wider park itself where we already have so many people utilising what is one of the regions best parks
playgrounds a few meters away," Barry said
He said there had been lots of great feedback from the community and across the Wellington region
"I think people are really amazed at the design itself
There's been a lot of thought and care that's gone into that ..
But being able to get the community involved into that process
I think we've reaped the rewards of that as well," Barry said
The new park has six different skate zones including a mini bowl
curbs and pole jams and a five-sided fun box with a ledge
Convic lead designer Simon Bogalo said this new skatepark had been a long time coming for the area
"All these things are kinda standard obstacles but really perfectly detailed
You'll see a lot of space in the facilities so run up space to obstacles and roll away space is critical to make sure that you can get ready
there's safe space around obstacles so you're not running into people and colliding and all that type of thing," Bogalo said
Mana whenua gifted the name Motutawa Skatepark in recognition of the park area once being the location of Motutawa Pā
They also contributed to the design which included artworks by Te Āti Awa Taranaki Whānui
and also reflect the concept of manaakitanga
Bogalo - who currently lives in Australia - has spent 11 years designing skate parks
although three of those have been in New Zealand
"It's a lot smoother than a lot of the old parks in New Zealand
A lot of the parks at the moment are kind of around that 20-plus year age span
where they're getting to the end of their life span
when you fall you get grazes and that kinda thing," Bogalo said
The different zones that the new skatepark had helped to cater to all levels of skaters
It felt amazing to be able to ride on the skatepark he helped bring to life
honestly it makes me so happy just first of all turning up and seeing it..
it's just an overwhelming feeling of happiness and really stoked to be here
Trying to test out the obstacles everything that you have in your mind and dream up

A 5-year-old boy who drowned at a popular Lower Hutt park will be farewelled at a funeral service on Friday
who had moved to New Zealand with his family from Kenya just a few months ago
Police said he was pulled unresponsive from a duck pond at the park shortly after 8pm and was unable to be resuscitated
A funeral notice posted to the BlackHouse Facebook page invited people to attend Miles' farewell
“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Miles Rotich
who left us too soon on 14 Dec 2024,” the notice read
“We invite you to join us in celebrating his life and cherishing the memories we shared
“Please join us in honouring Miles' memory and supporting each other during this difficult time.”
Miles had been playing at the park with other children the night he died
and was seen by a witness playing near the water’s edge
Wamiq Channa said he was at the park that day with his kids
and saw there was an event there organised by the Kenyan community
the kids were playing in the park,” he said
While he was riding on the flying fox with his children
he interacted with Miles and two other children
“I introduced my kids and also asked their names
He said they later moved over near the pond
and he saw one of the children go in and out of the water
“I was a bit surprised as the water is not suitable for swimming
As he was leaving he saw two of the children
“lying down near the edge of the water looking inside it”
Channa felt the council should change the depth of the pond to hopefully prevent future incidents
“It shouldn’t be used for paddle boating but should be there for ducks
meaning if the pond depth is around 2 to 2.5 feet it would still look good and would be safe for kids.”
“Coming from an Asian background I have seen Kiwi kids are more independent and know that they have to take care of themselves but kids from Asian or African backgrounds are more dependent on their parents or guardian
Since the community is becoming more diverse
we and the Government can be a bit more cautious,” he said
A Givealittle page
set up to support the grieving family said Miles
would aid funeral costs and possibly help bring Miles’ relatives to New Zealand for the service
the Givealittle had surpassed its initial $10,000 goal
“Our thoughts are with Miles’ family,” wrote one donor
“He was such a beautiful and caring little boy
we are grateful to have known him and for his kindhearted friendship with [our child] at preschool
Another donor described him as “a lovely smiling face in our preschool”
Council’s acting chief executive Andrea Blackshaw said their thoughts and prayers were with the boy’s whānau
“A rāhui was put in place around the pond at 8pm Sunday until further notice out of respect for the whānau,” she said
“Avalon Park is a 6ha park with a number of attractions
including the pond which is well used by the model boating club and others
Council leases the building in the park to the Avalon Pavilion Charitable Trust who manage it and make it available for community events
“Council’s Parks and Reserves officers will review the safety arrangements in place at the park and take advice on changes that could be made.”
A council spokesman confirmed there had been one other death in the pond many years ago
The depth of the pond varies from about 1m to 1.3m

A pilot involved in a crash at the Avalon International Airshow in Victoria on Friday remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital
crashed the aircraft while conducting a demonstration at about 5:15pm on Friday
Collins was the sole occupant of the plane
known as a Pitts Special aerobatic aircraft
According to a biography on the Paul Bennet Airshows website
Collins is an seasoned pilot with more than 2,700 hours flying experience
Paul Bennet Airshows said Collins was "one of our long-time Sky Aces pilots."
"The pilot is in a serious but stable condition and has been transferred to hospital for treatment," Paul Bennet Airshows said in a statement
"Our thoughts are with his family and we are grateful for the emergency services who responded quickly
"Our team and families appreciate the well-wishes and support."
The plane that crashed was one of four aircraft involved in an aerobatic display at the airshow when the accident occurred
Shaun Lenehan was in the crowd at the airshow when the crash happened a few hundred metres in front of spectators
"Everyone stopped straight away and they rolled the fire trucks out and they kind of put a pause on everything straight away," he said
"It looked like it could have been a fatal crash by the way it had hit the ground and disintegrated
He was pulling out of a dive so he was going quite fast."
said the plane hit the ground as it was coming out of a loop
"The cockpit was intact where he was but the wings were
like I don't know if they were detached from the plane
but they were like crumpled in front of the plane."
The chief commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB)
said investigators were almost finished examining the crash site and would now continue their investigation of the plane wreckage in a hangar
He said investigators would look into what pilots were tasked to do for the flight display
the plane's maintenance history and the pilot's history
Mitchell said investigators had recovered a number of recording devices from the plane
as well as mobile phone footage from the public
"That is all very important for us in recreating what's occurred here," he told reporters on Saturday
Mitchell said the investigation was in it's very early stages
"I suspect it will be a number of months before we have anything to say regarding what occurred yesterday and
is there anything else that we can work with in the industry to make sure that occurrences like this are lessened."
He encouraged anyone else with footage of the crash to submit it to the ATSB
Avalon Australian International Airshow CEO Justin Giddings confirmed the pilot was the only person hurt in the incident
"The incident occurred well away from the crowds in attendance and no member of the public was injured," he said
"The Avalon Australian International Airshow concluded the day's activities to allow the Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation team to have full and free access to the site
"Our thoughts are with the pilot and his family
although the start of the flying display will be delayed
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said investigators would look at available flight tracking data
pilot and aircraft maintenance records and weather information
"The ATSB asks anyone with video footage of the aircraft at any phase of the flight
or in the immediate aftermath of the accident
to make contact via the witness form on our website at their earliest opportunity."

RNZ broadcaster Phil O'Brien is among the crowd at the airshow and said the crash was "beyond horrible" and he can't believe anyone could survive the impact
He said the biplanes were doing loops and tricks which included stalling and plummeting towards the ground before pulling up at the last second
"And I watched him come down and he started to pull back and then suddenly he got into what looked like an uncontrollable spin
O'Brien said there were no flames but he saw an explosion of dust and felt the shock of the impact through the ground
"But the weirdest thing was this huge crowd at the airport just went completely silent
There wasn't a sound for about 10 seconds when everyone realised what had happened."
The pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft
was flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with critical injuries
an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson told the ABC
A young Kenyan boy who drowned at a popular Lower Hutt park was reportedly seen playing at the edge of a duck pond shortly before the tragic incident
A witness said he spotted 5-year-old Miles and another boy lying on the ground and peering into the water as he left Avalon Park with his own children on Saturday evening
Hutt City Council is now reviewing safety arrangements around the pond
Miles had emigrated to the Wellington suburb of Johnsonville just a few months prior
after his family of four secured New Zealand residency
He died on the weekend after being pulled unresponsive from the pond
A Givealittle page set up to support the grieving family said Miles

A large tree crashed into a home at Avalon Beach forcing a family to flee
Just after 7.15pm yesterday evening (Thursday
emergency services were called to a report of a tree fallen onto a house at Buyuma Place
Fire and Rescue NSW Avalon Station and NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Warringah/Pittwater Unit responded in wet weather to the residential property nestled deep at the end of the cul-de-sac
they found a large gum tree had come crashing down onto the roof of the house
causing significant structural damage (main image and above)
Six people were inside the home at the time
Firefighters assisted the residents out to the street
none needed further treatment or transport to hospital
The badly damaged house was deemed too dangerous for the residents to return
and it is understood they were collected by relatives and taken to stay in a home nearby
The large fallen tree was unable to be removed by NSW SES volunteers in the dark and stormy weather
but they ensured the area was made safe and the tree posed no further threat to neighbouring properties

pinned to the floor of the cabin by a fellow passenger
the teen was thought to be a maintenance worker when he allegedly entered the airport through a hole in the facility’s fence
It is alleged he then walked up the boarding staircase and into the plane
where 160 passengers were on board waiting to fly to Sydney
Victoria police superintendent Michael Reid said the 17-year-old had been detained by three passengers
passengers have identified the male was carrying a firearm,” Reid said
“The male was overpowered by three of the passengers at least
police have arrived and taken that male into custody
“No doubt this would have been a very terrifying incident for the passengers of that plane
and Victorian police really commend the bravery of those passengers who were able to overpower that male.”
Reid said ammunition was found along with the shotgun
but he did not confirm reports that knives and petrol were also found
Authorities did not yet know if the gun was registered
“[It’s] very concerning that a person can firstly breach security
approach an aircraft and make his way potentially close to being inside a aircraft with a firearm,” Reid said
“I can’t communicate more clearly how concerning that is.”
Police have located the teenager’s vehicle and are talking to counter-terror teams
Barry Clark was sitting in seat 1C on flight JQ 610 and tackled the teenager to the ground once he realised he allegedly had a weapon
“The lovely air hostess was just questioning this bloke trying to come on dressed up as a worker,” Clark told ABC Radio
“All I could do was push [the flight attendant] out of the way
and then put him in a hold and throw him to the ground until the police come.”
Clark said the teen “was perfectly dressed for the job
I’ve been taught from a boy to be responsible and look after others
so I was quietly confident I could handle him … so you just gotta do what you gotta do.”
Kim McLeod was on the flight for a work trip
“The pilot eventually got on the announcer and said that somebody had boarded the plane with a large gun.”
He had allegedly posed as a maintenance worker
Suspicion was raised after the crew had been told maintenance checks had been completed
but the person dressed as a maintenance worker was onboard
“A pilot and passenger tackled him to the ground,” McLeod said
passengers disembarked the plane and the airport was closed
but as no further flights were leaving the airport on Thursday
confirmed in a statement the airport was closed to visitors while the incident was investigated

newsZach Bryan Brings Out Noeline Hofmann and Willow Avalon During Headline Set at Stagecoach 2025By Alli Patton
The first day of Stagecoach certainly kicked off the festival weekend with a bang, especially when Zach Bryan capped that Friday night with an electrifying 30-song set full of favorites
From start to finish, it was obvious his headlining showcase would be one for the books. For two hours, he pulled from a catalogue now five studio albums strong, playing smash hits like ''68 Fastback', 'Something in the Orange' and 'Heading South', as well as newer offerings from 2024's The Great American Bar Scene.
Along the way, he covered Warren Zevon's 'Lawyers, Guns and Money', introducing the 1978 opus as one of his favorites, and debuted his latest single, 'Blue Jean Baby'
The perfect additions to his sprawling showcase
came by way of the guests he brought out during the night
Halfway into his performance, the hitmaker welcomed collaborator Noeline Hofmann onto the stage, and together, they performed a duet of the Hofmann-penned 'Purple Gas'
which appeared on The Great American Bar Scene to wide acclaim
“Every time we play it together I mess it up"
but there seemed to be no errors in sight during the enrapturing duet
Later on, he also tapped Willow Avalon for a sweet rendition of his Kacey Musgraves-backed 'I Remember Everything'
one we'll perhaps hear again when the two take on BST Hyde Park this summer

Boeing Defence Australia unveiled what was then referred to as the Loyal Wingman large stealthy uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) at the Australian International Airshow in Avalon near Melbourne six years ago
It occurred amid much fanfare and the trumpeting that it would be the first Australian designed military aircraft in more than six decades
The original idea outlined for the UAV was as a multirole platform which could conceivably act as an escort or attack aircraft and while the US side of Boeing continues to look at it in this role

The ground test phase for the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme will bridge the gap between prototype design and flight
laying essential groundwork ahead of fielding the uncrewed aircraft
The two aircraft flew more than 70 sorties in seven months and tested the system in various conditions and mission scenarios

Police allege the teenager entered Avalon Airport, west of Melbourne, through a hole in a security fence before trying to board a Jetstar flight bound for Sydney on Thursday afternoon.
He was tackled to the ground and detained by a group of passengers and the pilot until police arrived.
On Friday, the teenager faced a children's court charged with numerous offences including unlawfully taking control of an aircraft, endangering the safety of an aircraft, carrying out a bomb hoax and possessing a firearm.
Police say the boy tried to board the Jetstar flight after breaching a security fence at Avalon Airport. (7 News)
He did not apply for bail and is due to return to court for a hearing on March 21.
Charge sheets released by the court on Friday afternoon revealed the teenager also allegedly planted a fake homemade explosive and threatened passengers and crew.
"I've got bombs in my bag," the 17-year-old boy is alleged to have said.
He was also charged with stealing two 12-gauge shotguns and a rifle, possessing cartridge ammunition and driving offences.
During the brief hearing, the teenager, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, sat quietly and spoke only when asked by the magistrate if he was applying for bail.
"No, I'm not," the 17-year-old responded.
The court heard it was the teenager's first time in custody.
The incident has raised questions about security at Victoria's second-biggest airport, with Avalon Airport saying it was working with police to "urgently understand what has occurred".
One aviation security expert said Thursday's breach, which took place on a flight that was due to leave for Sydney, was "unacceptable".
Footage of the dramatic on-plane arrest showed the boy wearing a high-vis jacket.

Police said the boy had way to the Jetstar plane and walked up the stairs to the aircraft, where he was spoken to by a flight attendant.
Passengers onboard the flight said the boy became agitated when he could not produce a boarding pass or identification for the attendant.
One passenger, Barry Clark, helped the pilot and other crew overpower the boy and throw the shotgun down the stairs outside the aircraft.
Avalon Airport chief executive Ari Suss would not go into detail about the security breach when asked about it on Friday morning.
"This wasn't a matter with regards to the screening of passengers," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
However, aviation law and safety expert Ron Bartsch from Avlaw said it was an embarrassing breach for the airport.

"This is just simply not acceptable. Any passenger boarding a commercial jet aircraft in Australia is entitled to the same level of security, irrespective of what airport," he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
"Security systems have got to accommodate all possible scenarios and it's not inconceivable that someone with some wire cutters or whatever can cut through a fence so it makes a mockery of having sophisticated scanning and security systems.
Mr Bartsch said there could be "serious ramifications" for the airport as a result of the breach and it may face penalties.
Avalon Airport said normal operations had resumed but with increased security.
"As part of our ongoing commitment to security, we have implemented further measures across the airport, including within the terminal and surrounding areas," Avalon Airport chief executive Ari Suss said.
"We continue to work closely with authorities to ensure a safe and secure environment for all travellers.
Mr Suss said passengers at Avalon would see "a noticeable number of extra security officers" at the terminal.
Meanwhile, Mr Clark is being credited with coming to the aid of flight attendants during the drama.
The shearer told ABC Radio Melbourne he first noticed the young man when he realised a female flight attendant was questioning him.

"He was dressed up as a worker and he got agitated and before we knew it, there was a gun — shotgun appeared — and I was worried about there being shots so all I could do was get the gun out of the way, threw it down the stairs — try to — and then put him in a hold and throw him to the ground til the police come," he said.
Asked what was going through his mind when he tackled the young man, Mr Clark said: "You don't think, you act."
"I've been taught from a boy to be responsible and look after others and we're a sporting family so I was quietly confident I could handle him but I didn't want to see that poor girl get shot so you've just got to do what you've got to do," he said.

Mr Suss said the airport would offer Mr Clark "free flights for life" after his act of bravery.
"He is a hero. I told Barry he changed the course of history with what he did. I believe one of the Jetstar pilots also showed immense bravery," he said.

"The Jetstar crew, the Jetstar team, our Avalon team, the aircraft engineers, everyone's just done an amazing job, fantastic job."
Teri O'Toole from the Flight Attendants' Association of Australia said the crew handled the situation well.
"He would have clearly not had an aviation security identification card, or what we call an ASIC, and that is something the crew are certainly trained for to ensure that anyone dressed in maintenance, catering or official uniform has an ASIC," she said.

The company is set to commence flight testing of the subscale model later this month
The model replicates the aerodynamic configuration of the TriFan 600 introduced at the airshow and will be instrumental in assessing the aircraft’s vertical takeoff and its return to vertical landing mode
These flight tests aim to validate the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis associated with the “digital twin” of the aircraft
ensuring compliance with performance and safety benchmarks
XTI Aerospace chairman and CEO Scott Pomeroy said: “The TriFan 600 has captivated prospective customers
Don’t let policy changes catch you off guard
Stay proactive with real-time data and expert analysis
“This aircraft represents the future of air mobility
seamlessly blending the best of fixed-wing aircraft with the unique capability of vertical takeoff and landing.”
VStar 21 CEO Tony Laws said: “We are thrilled to have orders for the TriFan 600 and look forward to witnessing the transformative impact these aircraft will have on our operations
“Its versatility and advanced technology are key to our mission of providing rapid
and we believe it will be a game-changer in saving lives across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.”
XTI Aerospace is focused on advancing air mobility
starting with the TriFan 600 as its initial Regional xVTOL model
In January this year, XTI Aerospace secured access to the Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to support the development of the TriFan 600
Frontier is claimed to be the world’s first exascale supercomputer and the second most powerful commercially available system
