One person has been critically injured after a crash on a main suburban street in Auckland earlier this morning
A police spokesperson said they were notified of a single-vehicle crash on Tiverton Rd
“The vehicle had collided with a barrier,” said the spokesperson
One person was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition
The road was partially closed as the serious crash unit examined the scene
Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Josh Pennefather said two fire trucks were sent to the crash
“One person was trapped,” Pennefather said
Fire services cut the person out of the vehicle
A police spokesperson said there would be an investigation into the circumstances of the crash
The only high-reach ladder truck in Auckland broke down last night
Great progress is underway in the preparations to build Te Hono – the new Avondale library
Deconstruction works are complete and the focus now shifts to site preparations that include the construction of retaining walls
ahead of the main construction phase beginning in spring 2025
Centrally located in Avondale’s town centre
The project steering group of the council and Eke Panuku met on 24 February and agreed to run the enabling works and the main construction phase separately
This decision was taken to keep the project moving and ensure that the main construction phase is delivered at the right value
"The council is committed to delivering high-quality community projects that provide true value
Our intent is to manage capital projects effectively and ensure that every dollar is well spent for Aucklanders
This project reflects our commitment and strikes the right balance between fiscal responsibility and the community’s aspirations,” says Mrs Crewe
The project group continue their focus on minimizing compromises to the design
to ensure the final outcome delivers on the community’s vision and long-term needs keeping within the available budget
For more information, visit: Te Hono – Eke Panuku and OurAuckland
Auckland Council and Eke Panuku Development Auckland have worked in partnership on the design and planning of Te Hono – the new Avondale library & community hub with an upgraded town square
evolving alongside Avondale as a vibrant gathering place
the council signed a pre-construction services agreement with a main contractor in August 2022
Rising construction costs in 2023 resulted in a funding shortfall
so the Whau Local Board approved an updated design to simplify construction and minimise some of the costs
Auckland Council reallocated $15 million in September 2023 from the planned Whau Aquatic and Recreation Centre development budget
reinforcing the project’s importance to the community
the council’s steering group for this project invited the pre-construction services contractor to submit a final bid
After a thorough assessment and negotiations
both parties were unable to reach an agreement on the value for money and budget considerations
the project steering group approved the decision to go-to-market via a competitive tendering process
The council remains committed to delivering value for money within the approved overall budget for this project
At the council Project Steering Group on 24 February 2025
the decision was made to engage another council-approved contractor for the next stage of pre-construction
This stage includes removing the remaining concrete and steel structure supporting the slip lane and constructing new retaining walls
This approach also allows the project to continue while the new competitive tendering process for a new main contractor is completed
The successful main contractor is expected to start on-site in spring 2025
This approach also avoids the additional costs and risks of undertaking major earthworks during winter
sediment control and environmental mitigations

The proposed Avondale-Southdown corridor in red is intended to enhance Auckland transport’s infrastructure
KiwiRail says that its Avondale-Southdown rail link may be fast-tracked
but not everyone is happy as opinions among locals and experts differ
was first proposed when KiwiRail acquired land in the 1940s
KiwiRail’s Chief Capital Planning and Asset Development Officer
says the rail link would bring economic benefits and improve connectivity for passenger trains in Auckland
“It would also better enable the efficiency of freight services and free up inner city capacity for passenger trains,” he says
“The Avondale to Southdown corridor also unlocks network access and benefits for neighbouring regions and the wider New Zealand economy.”
Gordon says the development of a new transport corridor will require “a comprehensive planning process
extending over several years before any physical construction can start.”
The rail link is “a major long-term project that is not funded
and it is only at the very initial stage.”
Gordon says that the project still requires consent
property purchases and funding before any progress is to be made
environmental and community impacts would be considered as part of the process at that stage.”
is concerned about the effects of construction on the area
“I don’t believe it is in keeping with this beautiful heritage area and residential community,” she says
“It’ll cause major disruption because they’ll have to cut off roads
and sound. I don’t think it’s the right area to cut through for freight.”
The New Zealand Herald senior writer Simon Wilson
says that an Avondale to Southdown corridor is needed because freight cannot make it through the city on the existing rail network
“You want as much freight to go by rail because rail has far fewer emissions than trucks and does far less damage to the roads.”
“A truck with a container on it does the same damage to a road as 10,000 cars.”
Wilson says that he does recognise residents' concerns about a new rail line through Onehunga
it’ll be disruptive to people who live near it
Freight at the moment is carried by diesel
Gordon says that the link would “integrate with existing bus routes and provide alternative routes when there are necessary maintenance shutdowns on other parts of the network.”
“The rail line would enhance access to employment and education opportunities, making the location even more desirable for young people.”
Student and Onehunga resident Olivia Sua says that the rail line would make “getting to university way easier and faster for me
Maungakiekie-Tāmaki ward Councillor Josephine Bartley says that she is opposed to it “given the detrimental effect on the location
community and housing built up around and on the designation.”
Rossetto says she “wouldn’t mind the idea of a new route that avoided destruction to the streets
but if you’re going to cut through schools and the streets

An Auckland community group say they're taking their push to protect Avondale Racecourse land to Parliament
as they look to maintain a community green space
The I Love Avondale team presented to Auckland Council's policy and planning committee on Thursday in front of a packed public gallery
raising concerns about potential development of the entire piece of land
In March last year the Avondale Jockey club
moved to change the entire 35 hectares to a terrace and apartment buildings zone under Council's PC78 Intensification process
locals said the Avondale Jockey club's plans caught them unaware
More than 20,000 attend the Avondale Markets every Sunday which has been held since the 1970s
while the land is also leased by Auckland Council every year for local sports clubs
There were four people who spoke on behalf of the community group
environment and social impacts the loss the area could have
I Love Avondale's team leader Jaclyn Bonnici said she was encouraged by the response from councillors
"I think we got our main points across well and now I look forward to the next steps," Bonnici said
Those next steps include taking the issue to Parliament and the Racing Minister Winston Peters
"We have always intended to speak with the Minister and engage with central government
but as representatives of Tāmaki Makaurau we thought it best to come to our council first
"We actually find our local board and council look to people to inform them and so then we can mobilise together
we will be going next to Wellington," Bonnici said
I Love Avondale said they're not against the land being developed for housing
but it was important to define "for who and by who" this housing would be for
we're trying to focus on the ambition and opportunity of what could be possible for a regional park of the scale in terms of urban ngahere (bush)
markets and high-quality housing," Bonnici said
it's ridiculous that Auckland Council have been paying year on year for those sports fields
it should be a fully community owned asset
hopefully a few more ears have opened and hopefully a few more doors for people to take us seriously as a united front," Bonnici said

A 36-year-old man has appeared in court on Monday afternoon charged with murder after the woman's body was discovered in an Auckland home
Police charged a man with murder on Saturday
after the discovery of a woman's body in Avondale
Officers were called to a property in Holly Street shortly after 1.30am
Judge Ajit Swaran Singh granted the man interim name suppression until he appears at the High Court in Auckland on 29 January
Judge Singh granted the suppression to allow the accused to inform his parents of the charge
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said a scene examination was held at the property over the weekend
Police were not seeking anyone else in relation to the woman's death
Distraught family members of a woman whose body was found in an Auckland house overnight have arrived at the property, as police officers investigate the homicide.
There were emotional scenes as a group of people arrived at the Holly St property, in the suburb of Avondale, about 10.30am.
A witness said: “There were five of them and they walked down the driveway to talk to police.
“Then one of them, a woman, just broke down. She needed to be held up by the others. She was just sobbing.”
Police were called to the house just after 1.30am and found a dead woman inside, Senior Sergeant Scott Armstrong said earlier.
A 35-year-old man has since been charged with murder and has been remanded in custody. He is due to appear in the Auckland District Court on Monday.
Officers are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death, Armstrong said.
Residents and locals are being told to expect a high police presence in the area over the next few days, as a scene examination is carried out today and tomorrow.
More than a dozen police and emergency services-type vehicles remain on the street early this afternoon.
Residents are in shock after learning that someone has been killed in their neighbourhood.
One person told the Weekend Herald that although he did not know what had happened or know the neighbours involved, he felt unsafe.
Others said police officers had knocked on their doors to ask and take statements.

Little Avondale Stud created a slice of New Zealand racing history when they successfully brokered a deal to stand Little Brose at their Wairarapa farm.
Principals Sam and Catriona Wiliams pulled off a breeding coup with the high-class colt, the first ever Australian Group One-winning two-year-old over 1200m to debut at stud in this country.
He will stand his first season in 2025 at $15,000 + GST alongside his sire and stud stalwart Per Incanto, who off the back of a stellar season will serve a limited book of 85 mares at the increased fee of $60,000 + GST.
Little Brose’s two-year-old season was highlighted by his victory in the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), having earlier claimed the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m).
“There’s been a lot of interest and to have a Blue Diamond winner going to stud at $15,000 is unheard of,” Sam Williams said.
“Redoute’s Choice and Extreme Choice won it and so did Written By and Tagaloa, who both had stakes winners at the weekend, it’s a real stallion making race.
“There were seven stakes horses to come out of Little Brose’s Blue Diamond and he beat Cylinder in the Merson Cooper, and he went on to run second in the Golden Slipper (Gr.1, 1200m) and win the Newmarket (Gr.1 1200m).”
Major New Zealand stud farms were fast out of the gates to support Little Brose, who will make his first public parade at Little Avondale on May 15.
“Little Brose was syndicated quickly through Cambridge Stud, Elsdon Park, Hallmark, Haunui Farm, Milan Park, Ardsley, Windsor Park, Mapperley, Beaufort Downs, Inglewood, Woburn Farm, Rich Hill, Goodwood, Fairdale and Novara Park,” Williams said.
“There are a couple overseas as well with Sledmere Stud, who sold Little Brose as a yearling, and Ben Kwok of Singapore, involved.”
Purchased for A$200,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Lindsay Park, the colt returned from his outstanding juvenile campaign to place in the Gr.3 McNeil Stakes (1200m).
He then relocated from Ben, Will and JD Hayes’ stable to join their father David’s Sha Tin operation and finished runner-up in his second appearance before suffering a career ending injury.
“I think we were lucky to get a deal done with Little Brose very early after he had arrived back in Australia, otherwise I feel we would have struggled to compete against some of the Australian studs,” Williams said.
Little Brose is a son of the American-bred stakes winner Mohegan Sky, whose pedigree page features the Gr.1 Tatt’s Winter Stakes (1400m) winner Absolut Glam.
Per Incanto has enjoyed another royal innings on and off the track this season.
“His yearlings this year, off a $50,000 service fee, averaged $207,000 across the big five sales and a recent average of A$425,000 at Sydney Easter with a high of A$650,000,” Williams said.
“Sale results only come by success on the track, and he’s had Group One winners Jimmysstar and Gringotts and a quartet of Group Two winners.”

Masa Hashizume will reunite with Willydoit in Saturday's Group 2 Eagle Technology Avondale Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie
The Auckland-based hoop is having the best season of his career to date, currently well on track to surpass his previous season-best tally of 57 wins. In the first half of this term, Hashizume had steered home 52 winners, including Kelly Coe in the Group 3 J Swap Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa.
Hashizume had been battling out the lead in the National Jockey’s Premiership with Craig Grylls, before an unfortunate incident in the final race on Thorndon Mile Day resulted in a broken collarbone. Just over a month later, Hashizume was back in trackwork, with his sights set on returning for the Avondale Cup meeting.
“I hadn’t done much for about four weeks, then I started riding trackwork on the 11th [of February],” he said. “I’m feeling good, I’ve been going to the gym to help my shoulder and everything’s going well.
“I was always planning to come back on the 22nd, so it’s good to be able to do that.”
Willydoit has been one of the finds of the 3-year-old crop this season and Hashizume has been right by his side throughout, riding him in every trial and race-day appearance up to February 1, when Kevin Stott took the reins in his absence.
The son of Tarzino has won three of his four starts and is currently rated a $2 favourite for the $1.25 million Group 1 Trackside New Zealand Derby (2400m) on Champions Day next month, his next target after Saturday’s assignment.
“He’s a very easy-going type of horse and in a good way, he doesn’t know anything or worry about anything,” Hashizume said. “He’s won at 1400m and a mile, but when you look at him, he looks like a big 4-year-old staying type.
“Whatever he’s doing now is just a bonus, he’ll go 2100m, no problem.”
A grateful Hashizume will reunite with the gelding on Wednesday for his final gallop, under the watchful eye of trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy.
“Shaun has been supporting me since I was a three- and four-kilo claimer,” he said. “If this horse was with another stable, I probably would’ve been taken off by now, so it’s very special to me that Shaun, Emma and the owners have that belief in me.
“Hopefully I can get a result for them too.”
Explosive filly Hankee Alpha is another of Hashizume’s feature rides on Saturday, taking her place in the Listed Trevor and Coralie Eagle Uncle Remus Stakes (1400m). Prepared by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, Hankee Alpha produced outstanding victories on her first two starts, before finishing a meritorious fifth in the Group 3 Almanzor Trophy (1200m) on Karaka Millions Night.
“She showed me a lot in the first trial I rode her in, then I went on my holiday after that,” Hashizume said.
“She was showing so much in her gallops and the Wexford team did a great job to settle her in her races and show that turn of foot that she’s got.
“I watched her last start at the racecourse [Ellerslie] and she was good, she was strong late and had a lot of time between runs there. I galloped her last Saturday and on Monday and she felt better and better, so I’m very excited to ride her too.
“Since the day I fell, Andrew and Lance have messaged me every week or so and told me they will be there when I came back, which gave me a lot of motivation. They’re very supportive.”
While Hashizume won’t be taking too many more rides on his return, he jumped at the opportunity to partner another rising Wexford star in Tomodachi. A winner in four of her six starts, Hashizume rode the mare on debut and will be back on board in the Open 1200m.
“She’s a very good horse,” he said. “She’ll definitely be competitive in stakes races this prep, so hopefully I can get a result and stay on her.
“On my first day back, I just want to be concentrating on four or five horses and I trust Leith [Innes, agent] to do what’s best for me.”
The Karaka yearling sales are a key economic driver for the New Zealand racing industry.

is being removed as Eke Panuku prepares to develop the town square where the statue stands
The square is being redeveloped into a new library and community hub

The huntsman spider was first introduced to New Zealand in the 1920s and became a common sight in the Auckland suburb where it flourished
The Avondale spider even found fame in the 1990 horror film Arachnophobia
with 300 of the spiders used in the filming
These days the spiders themselves are a rare sight in the area
The statue is owned by the Avondale Business Association (ABA) and they say the statue will have a new home eventually
it said the statue had served as a unique symbol for Avondale's evolving and diverse community
and had been a distinctive landmark of significance to the area's local identity
The ABA said once the statue was removed it would be placed in storage and assessed to see what restoration work was needed
It said funds would be required for any restoration and relocation work
but the aim remained to provide Dale with a new home
"The ABA is actively working with members of the community to identify a suitable new location for the statue," it said
This was ongoing and there was no word yet when Dale would re-emerge
